Same old problems plague Dogs in loss to Spartans

Mark Richt’s Bulldogs didn’t have to find any new ways to lose in the Outback Bowl — instead, they simply let lots of familiar problems resurface in suffering another second-half collapse and dropping a three-overtime battle with Michigan State.

Again, the Dogs wasted a superlative first-half defensive effort by giving the opponent a couple of cheap touchdowns thanks to turnovers by an erratic Aaron Murray, whose two interceptions put the Spartans back in the ball game.

Again, Georgia’s almost complete lack of a running game made the Dog’ offense one-dimensional. And was anyone at all surprised when Isaiah Crowell, reduced to a backup role, limped off the field after a handful of runs?

Again, placekicker Blair Walsh, once one of the nation’s premier specialists, proved himself more a liability than a weapon and ended up costing Georgia the game by missing two kicks in OT.

And again, playcaller Mike Bobo seemed incapable of adjusting to the realities of what was happening on the field and stubbornly stuck with what wasn’t working.

With the middle of the Spartan’s defensive line as solid as a brick wall, Bobo continually called for runs up the middle — often with delays that turned into tackles for loss since State was getting into the Georgia backfield so quickly. Early on, Georgia was able to have some running success on the outside, but once MSU adjusted to stop that, the Dogs basically were no threat on the ground.

To top it all off, with the Spartans continually blitzing from the corner, Bobo insisted on calling slow-developing downfield passing plays, an all too familiar scenario made even worse by Murray’s poor decision-making when pressured and Georgia’s tight ends being a nonfactor in the game.

Overall, Georgia relied too much on its big-play capability and never was able to really sustain anything offensively against the talented Spartans defense.

Typical of the day was what happened with a little over 3 and a half minutes left in regulation. Needing a first down or two to kill the clock and ice a victory, the Dogs went ultra-conservative and ultra-predictable — two hallmarks of Bobo’s career as a playcaller — by trying again in vain to run Richard Samuel up the middle.

It surprised no one, and the fact that it didn’t work didn’t surprise anyone, either.

And then the banged-up Georgia defense, which had played well most of the day, looked gassed on the Spartans’ last drive of regulation, getting no pressure on MSU QB Kirk Cousins, who cooly passed his team down the field to send it into overtime.

Just think how ugly things might have gotten had Brandon Boykin not played the game of his life in his farewell performance as a Georgia Bulldog, nailing a Spartan receiver for a safety, scoring on a thrilling 92-yard punt return that saw him reversing direction and weaving his way all over the field, and then moving over to offense to catch a touchdown pass for his third different score of the day.

He’ll be missed big-time.

So two disappointing losses bookended a Georgia season that started out 0-2.

Sure, the 10 wins between those four losses and an SEC East title is a big improvement over last season.

But, looking ahead, even though Georgia returns a lot of talent and will have another favorable schedule next year, if the problems that continually reared their head this season aren’t addressed, it’s going to be tough for Richt’s program to take the next step forward.

I know what I’m about to say is petty, but it has reached the point with me that whenever CMR says something or is interviewed I want to pull my hair out. I’ve gotten to the point where the sound of his voice makes me want to scream. That’s bad, because he is a fine man. However, the year after year monotony of no change has reached Ray Goofian levels. Will this ever end!?!

Think of all the teams with place kicker problems, and then consider that VT is using their 3rd string kicker. How many teams even have a 3rd string kicker???

Fire Mark Richt! There, I said it. I’ve been critical of Richt for several years now, but I’ve never actually called for his dismissal. Its just abundantly clear that this is all you get with Richt.

Bill, I only disagree with one piece of your analysis. For once, I will defend Bobo. I doubt going conservative on the final drive of regulation or in the 3rd OT was Bobo’s call. And I thought going shotgun a bunch was the right move against a superior defensive front. And I don’t think we went for the big play too much; it was the only thing that was working offensively.

I have 2 words for what Georgia needs next year: Strenght and Conditioning. The OL needs strength (can’t run at all against good defenses) and the D needs conditioning (I mean we looked like the ‘85 Bears in the fist half of the last 2 games; then like the ‘94 Dawgs).

Actually,The Big Ten is winning this bowl season..

I can't believe Aaron Murray BLEW THAT GAME to go to 0-9 vs teams ending top 25. 3 sacks, fumble, 2 interceptions, 9 rushes minus 14 yards, 1 reception blocked pass minus 3 yards - all with 16 point lead.

“The article is pretty much dead on. Impossible to continue to defend Richt,Bobo and Murray. The coaching staff lacks the edge it takes to put this team over the top. Richt lead UGA to a “Paper Chamionship” this year. All smoke and mirrors and he suckered us all into more than likely an extension. No way do we make it past LSU or Bama next year.”

Spot on again Lowcountry Bulldawg, sir. You are 2 for 2. Just imagine 25 Losses over the last Six (6) seasons, Lowcountry Bulldawg. I am with you. Don’t see any crow-eating by you Lowcountry Bulldawg : You’re not the 1 in here saying how great we were yesterday, or ignoring the lackluster game by us up 16-0 like it never happened. We haven’t been any good, we aren’t any good and adding Keith Marshall will be a big help, but our QB sir, in the big games against teams you and I and the world know will end up in the top 25 gets the heebie-jeebies. He isn’t clutch. He cannot play under pressure. If he ever does beat a team who ends up top 25, which seems highly unlikely, he will then be 1-10 vs teams who finish top 25.

41 percent of Aaron Murray Starts, are LOSSES. Fact.

11 of 27 Aaron Murray Starts are LOSSES.

Yet, neither Mike Bobo nor Mark Richt again found any opportunity, given the horrendous play of Aaron Murray in the Outback Bowl at 1pm reserved for the 5th best SEC team when we didn’t even play at a 5th-best level, to put in anyone for 1 snap. I don’t have to tell you that Hutson Mason and Christian LeMay BOTH would have done better than Aaron Murray’s fumble to start the momentum (And, Aaron Murray is the ONLY PLAYER to fumble yesterday.), his 2 interceptions, he blocked pass catch by himself for minus 3 yards, his 9 carries for 1.3 yards a carry, his 3 more sacks – ALL WITH A 16-POINT LEAD,

LOST THE GAME by himself without a person called on from the bench to try to stem the tide.

It was an opportunity for conservative Mike Bobo / Mark Richt Offensively, to give The Bulldog Nation 1 chance to SHINE all season long. Clearly, after a performance like that, someone – anyone – must be brought in.

Aaron Murray is IMMATURE. Turning his name in to the NFL Advisory Conmittee. The beer can. The man purse. The whatever he was doing at FSU game. Just doesn’t even look the part of a football leader. Tweeting going to kick some ___ before Boise State. Lack of Leadership with Isaiah Crowell, who turned his back on Mark Richt and walked away while he was still talking when I went to the game and watched it myself.

ISSUES. We play FAVORITES. Aaron Murray AND Blair Walsh should BOTH HAVE BEEN YANKED LONG AGO. Why weren’t they ? If Mark Richt says 1 more statement about 10-Win season is so awesome, with all the 2-dozen teams with 10-win seasons this season alone, I hope someone actually boos him. He knows what the he__ he is doing ? I think the fan in Macon does.

“From a UA perspective, so TIFWIW:

4. Who do you think decides the game plan? The head coach is not wearing that head set just to cover his bald spot.

5. Aaron Murray lost all confidence in the second half. Try designing a game plan around a quarterback who can no longer see the field. On the subject of QBs, there should be an open competition in the spring.

7. Last year you pilloried Mark Richt for not going for a touchdown in the bowl game. This year you pillory him when he did.

8. Show a little respect to your coaches and players. Disappointing loss, sure. But many of these comments are an embarrassment to what you say you stand for.
_____________________________________________________
Brown Dog, you have never typed a blog post in here that I ever saw sir. It is so obvious what is wrong with this team from the outside looking in. You have to live a football program, to be an expert and list the 8 items that need to be fixed. For example, you somehow managed to MISS the point about coaching that job 1 is to MOTIVATE the players. You apparently watched YESTERDAY’S FIASCO, and EVEN WITH THAT, you cannot bother to make that 1 of your 8 points, sir ? That Michigan State was well-MOTIVATED and we were quiet as Church Mice.

You leave open the fact that Keith Marshall really is going to be a big help to this football program. You watch yesterday’s game, and again, you have to be on the INSIDE to follow a program and be the expert : Keith Marshall would have won that game for us yesterday. Would he make a difference vs LSU Alabama Oklahoma State Arkansas Stanford Oregon Wisconsin Boise State and on and on and on and on ?

I can't believe Aaron Murray BLEW THAT GAME to go to 0-9 vs teams ending top 25. 3 sacks, fumble, 2 interceptions, 9 rushes minus 14 yards, 1 reception blocked pass minus 3 yards - all with 16 point lead.

January 4th, 2012
4:08 am

No way. Keith Marshall cannot overcome the mistakes of Aaron Murray GIVING AWAY EVERY GAME VS EVERY TEAM YOU AND I AND THE WORLD KNOWS ENDS UP A TOP 25 TEAM – A REAL FOOTBALL TEAM. I told this blog that Michigan State is the real deal. I think this blog got it. I know the PLAYERS did NOT. They got up 16 to NOTHING and our staff let Aaron Murray THROW THE GAME AWAY.

Again. Against a team I clearly made the point is a top-ranked got it going complete football team.

1st you say Mark Richt is in charge of this program and then in the same breath, state that Mark Richt must be playing Favorites to have played ONLY AARON MURRAY all last season and all this season with his 41 percent LOSSES in all his starts. Yes, it is HIS FAULT we LOST again. Again, for the 11th time in 27 starts, the OTHER QB was FAR SUPERIOR to Aaron Murray head-to-head. If Mark Richt is in charge, and he ONLY plays Aaron Murray, and you say both of those points and you say that there must be open competition, then you are

ADMITTING A FUNDAMENTAL FLAW OF MARK RICHT

which isn’t going away. He’s a nice guy. He’s a world-class recruiter. He has NO DISCIPLINE and he has NO CONCEPT of something called DISCIPLINE nor something called MOTIVATION. He thinks discipline is to FORGIVE THE PLAYER and he thinks MOTIVATION is a new red hat, or red high heels. He’s a wimp as a football man, which is why he DID NOT PLAY THE GAME. He NEVER DID play. Not at ANY LEVEL.

Tim Tebow and UGA Bulldogs’ fans got together on THIS BLOG and they chatted about how they want their girls to date Tim Tebow, who never has been out on a date I ever heard of. I tried to tell them Tebow is NO NFL QB. I have said it for 7 years now. I have explained it in detail from my perspective as a db, and now for 3 decades since a college football fan who used to have Falcon’s season tickets. If my Dad had season tickets and I the eldest son, I went to EVERY GAME. That makes them OUR SEASON TICKETS.

4:09 am

I drove the Bulldogs’ van when I was old enough. Eat your freaking hearts out you miserable little peons who think yours does not stink to high heaven and despite the posts I continually put up of what YOU ACTUALLY HAVE POSTED HERE. Then, I bought season tickets. Me. I have perspective and you have some LOVE AFFAIR with Jesus Christ saying you prefer Mark Richt to Nick Saban. And, that Tim Tebow makes Denver’s top defense a winning team. It does NOT. The whole world was pulling for Tim Tebow the last month and he has played like crudola with his head down, whining, not praying. He’s a fullback. Just like I told you Reggie Bush is not an NFL tailback. And, just as I told you David Greene and Aaron Murray would NEVER play a game in the NFL, not EVER. Still disappointed DJ Shockley got injured at Atlanta and didn’t get a snap before Matt Ryan was drafted.

So, I am addressing now # 8 still before I finish with 7. If you watch and actually contribute to a football program you entire lifetime, went to school there, were a walk-on there, go to the games, follow the program, and know more about the program from the INSIDE than some poster who is a Bible-Thumper who ONLY WANTS TO SAY I want my daughter to date Tim Tebow and I prefer Mark Richt to Nick Saban they refer to as the devil, or to Les Miles who are 2 of a dozen guys who in their careers there compared to Mark Richt’s career here only with no experience who still doesn’t know head coaching skills obviously glaringly, then you are missing the point. I actually am NOT SATISFIED with 25 LOSSES these last entire Six (6) Seasons. I absolutely know 2002 there only was 1 other SEC team who ended up in the Coaches’ Poll top 25 a 4-Loss Auburn team. And, I know you cannot address that or the 2005 season when Mark Richt ended up # 3 of The SEC teams IN EVERY POLL you cannot address either. So, you skip over it, and tell me you are a Christian and want Tim Tebow and you are a Christian and prefer Mark Richt to devil Nick Saban, and then ATTACK ME PERSONALLY in the blogs as YOUR WEAK RETORT. When you grow up to half the man I am to this football program, you will not be a snot-nosed brat hiding behind your keyboard ACTING LIKE YOU ARE SOME GREAT CHRISTIAN WITNESS ON THIS BLOG.

You are ANYTHING BUT A GREAT WITNESS BY YOUR EVERY POST.

I want MORE than Mark Richt has provided for this football program.

Now, # 7. Last year we “pilloried” Mark Richt from pillar to post for SETTLING FOR A FIELD GOAL AT THE HALF-FOOT LINE in the bowl game. This year we are doing the same for the SAME EXACT ERROR – SETTLING FOR A FIELD GOAL FROM AN UNRELIABLE KICKER WHEN OBVIOUSLY YOU TRY 1ST TO DO ALL YOU CAN DO WITHOUT TURNING THE BALL OVER TO GET THE BALL INTO THE END ZONE 1ST. Not try a 1st down effort half-hearted like it doesn’t matter, give up and have your Great Starting QB with 41 percent of his Starts LOSSES, run to his right and give up 3 more yards to put the ball in the middle of the field on 2nd down, and then kick the field goal on 3rd down without reminding the WALK-ONS you play on Special Teams to FALL ON THE FOOTBALL IF IT IS BLOCKED.

You get ANY of that ?

I can't believe Aaron Murray BLEW THAT GAME to go to 0-9 vs teams ending top 25. 3 sacks, fumble, 2 interceptions, 9 rushes minus 14 yards, 1 reception blocked pass minus 3 yards - all with 16 point lead.

We were gonna let our great defense hold them one more time with 3 minutes left….bobo played conservative cause his QB was throwing picks and he didn’t want to give them a short field…defense played a great 1st half, just like LSU, but tired in the 2nd half and let a not so good offense look very good…with no runningbacks and a QB who is overrated throwing picks, what calls does the offensive coordinator make…and remember the Head Coach is on the headsets and can change the play call on any down. In our haste to blame let’s not try to make Bobo the scapegoat…great defenses don’t let a team who couldn’t get a first down in the first half come flying down the field with no blitzes called and no pressure on the QB at the end of the game for 80 plus yards…have a sense of fairness when you go calling somebody out…

I have preached it and preached it and will continue. Until UGA decides to start recruiting FOOTBALL PLAYERS instead of 5 star prima donnas we will never win big. Look at the teams that are in the BCS. They recruit FOOTBALL PLAYERS! We were beat by a bunch of 2 and 3 stars. Get back to the film room and get out to the schools and find them. Stop letting scout dot com or some other internet idiots run your recruiting. I have coached HS ball for 25 years. The last football coach from UGA that I saw out recruiting was Ray Goff. We don’t recruit Southeast Ga at all. We lose great players to UF, FS, Miami, etc every year. They are great football players but may not have 5 stars because the recruiting services don’t cover anywhere but the metro areas.

Please leave your opinion off of your blog…Just let people come here and spout off without you getting your licks in on Bobo…it is obvious you have watched Georgia football for a long time, but that don’t make you an expert on offensive football. Offense has no proven runningbacks, hence the shotgun and trying for the quick strike…defense let them come down the field in 3 minutes to win the game whereas they couldn’t get a first down in first half…oline needs strength, and defense needs conditioning…coach T will provide just that, remember he has only had one year with our guys, they will continue to get better physically….Bobo tries to play to his strengths on offense, which are few at this time…HIS PLAYCALLING LOOKED PRETTY SPORTY WITH KNOWSHON AND STAFFORD BACK THERE, RIGHT NOW THERE IS NO KNOWSHON OR STAFFORD….IT’S ALL ABOUT THE JIMMY’S AND JOES, BILL, AND RIGHT NOW WE ARE LIMITED ON OFFENSE…QB THROWING PICKS THE 2nd HALF, YET I READ WHERE WE PLAYED CONSERVATIVE WITH 3 MIN..LEFT IN THE GAME…I WONDER WHY….WITH QB THROWING PICKS….AND FUMBLING AFTER 12 YARD GAINS…BILL, YOU ARE QUICK TO LAY BLAME, BUT IF YOU REALLY UNDERSTOOD FOOTBALL, YOU WOULDN’T BE DOING THIS AND THROWING COACHES UNDER THE BUS….

-30 players run off, flunked out, quit, transferred all Good Riddance
-but the 30 caused us to play horribly at the ends of every game
-Bobo Richt stole from JAX State where he was quarterbacks’ coach
-Bobo therefore is still learning job of Offensive Coordinator
-Bobo no one wants to hire as head coach cuz he sucks as OC
-Bobo recruits all this talent here, but players are to blame for losses
-Bobo says Aaron Murray’s footwork is HORRIBLE
-Bobo prefers saying that to press yesterday than teaching him it
-Truth is the QBs he’s had, he taught NOTHING TO about QB
-NOTHING, they all came IN with MORE SKILL than left with
-see item 1, 30 missing this season, as to why no RB
-RB down to 7th and 8th string, no running game
-Blame THAT TOO on RB themselves so say Richt & Bobo
-Blame it on the RB remaining that they cannot do the job
-All their RB they have had here, they SQUANDERED
-TE Orson Charles can’t block as well as he catches
-Throw TE Orson Charles 1 pass then all game, teach him
-Make him block every play, blame him for 3 sacks Murray
-And, the 7th and 8th string TB blame them for not blocking
-Truth be told, study film TB were open Murray didn’t see them
-OL biggest in NFL or college great 3 seniors going to NFL
-OL cannot block cuz Murray sacked 55 times in 27 games
-Coach not to blame but PLAYERS 11 losses last 27 games
-11 losses last 27 games 41 percent LOSSES blame players
-NOT THE COACHES according to the coaches
-BILL KING not allowed post about that, but only YOU
-Richt let Isaiah Crowell do whatever he wanted from start
-IC turns walks away from Richt when gets 15 yd penalty
-Richt left standing there still talking as he walked away
-I was there, you were not, but you say Richt has discipline
-I would have called a time-out taken him by the hand and
-I would have walked him to locker taken his uni sent him
-Home to mama and his high school football coach
-I would have MY DISCIPLINE

I can't believe Aaron Murray BLEW THAT GAME to go to 0-9 vs teams ending top 25. 3 sacks, fumble, 2 interceptions, 9 rushes minus 14 yards, 1 reception blocked pass minus 3 yards - all with 16 point lead.

-I trained him, or not, and I forgive him for all mistakes
-I therefore counted on him to make it when game on line
-Put him in there, in fact, made every effort to put him
-in as much pressure situation as I could to fail
-then blame him instead of myself for not yanking him
-Loyal to coaches Willie Martinez now Mike Bobo
-I told this blog get rid of Bobo when Willie run off
-Happy you said, get rid of Willie, I told you Offense
-Offense is the ISSUE
-Offense remains the ISSUE, now you want Bobo gone
-Right. Brilliant. Only problem ? You spent 3 years
-3 years telling me Bobo is GREAT. Now get rid of him
-I never said put Hutson Mason as Starter, I said play him
-Now, I am saying start Hutson Mason or Christian LeMay
-either 1. Let Aaron Murray be back-up, he’s proven
-I know he LOSES 41 percent of his starts
-what’s it cost us ? He is 0-9 now vs teams ending top 25
-is there something WORSE than 0-9 ? Well ? Huh ?
-START SOMEONE NOT THE FAVORITE
-shake it up, MOTIVATE

-MOTIVATION – basic skill head coach job # 1
-BLAME THE PLAYERS after every loss, AGAIN
-AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND NOW YESTERDAY
-Coach ? He is NOT RESPONSIBLE ? He of 3.5 million

-worse kick-off returns, punts, and coverages’ teams
-that is players fault too, only they are WALK-ONS
-give 11 walk-ons scholarships never play offense or defense
-saddled with half of them next year scholarships AGAIN
-none will play offense or defense next season, either
-instead cruddy recruiting class for 2012 quite obviously
-young team cuz ran off 30 you said GOOD RIDDANCE to

I hope the Dogs fire Bobo and hope they don’t win again until they do. Go LSU at least they play exciting ball. It’s just a shame to have the talent and be so short on coaching. I like you CMR but you have to hire and fire at times, duh. Can anyone else see this besides me.

I agree glenn. I don’t want Bobo fired but I do want him re-assigned as QB coach and recruiter. He is loyal to UGA and was a great player. He deserves a chance to remain on staff IMHO.

I also want a wide open QB competition in the spring under the eye of an NFL caliber OC. Fresh evaluation.

THESE ARE NOT EXCUSES YOU YELL IN ALL CAPS ?

1. Offense has no proven runningbacks

2. hence the shotgun

3. and trying for the quick strike

4. defense let them come down the field

5. D down field in 3 minutes to win the game

6. whereas they couldn’t get a first down in first half

7. oline needs strength

8.defense needs conditioning

9.coach T will provide just that

10. coach Joe Tereshinski II remember he has only had one year

11. one year with our guys

12. they will continue to get better physically

13. Bobo tries to play to his strengths on offense

14. few strengths on O which are few at this time

15. HIS PLAYCALLING LOOKED PRETTY SPORTY

16. WITH KNOWSHON AND STAFFORD BACK THERE

17. RIGHT NOW THERE IS NO KNOWSHON OR STAFFORD

18.IT’S ALL ABOUT THE JIMMY’S AND JOES

19. all Bill Kings’ FAULT

20. BILL, AND RIGHT NOW WE ARE LIMITED ON OFFENSE

21. QB THROWING PICKS THE 2nd HALF

22. YET I READ WHERE WE PLAYED CONSERVATIVE

23. WITH 3 MIN..LEFT IN THE GAME

24. another EXCUSE, you offer I WONDER WHY

25. WITH QB THROWING PICKS

26. AND FUMBLING AFTER 12 YARD GAINS

27. BILL KING, YOU ARE QUICK TO LAY BLAME

28. Let me reply that is my job to LIST EXCUSES IN REPLY

29. BUT IF YOU REALLY UNDERSTOOD FOOTBALL

30. YOU WOULDN’T BE DOING THIS

31. AND THROWING COACHES UNDER THE BUS….

It’s all the players’ faults.

MIKE BOBO ?

Get your head out of their behinds or if they stop too quick, you will have brown all over your nose.

THEY FAILED AT THEIR JOB.

It is NOT ONLY THE RESPONSIBILITY OF BILL KING TO SAY SO, IT IS HIS JOB AND DUTY TO DO SO.

Bill King is right.

Your LIST OF EXCUSES 31 EXCUSES IN 1 PARAGRAPH, none hold water. It’s the fault of Mark Richt. He and he alone, he of the $ 291,000 a month total compensation. The buck STOPS HERE.

Not Blair Walsh.

I don’t actually fault the kid whom I named the most valuable Bulldog 2010, and said at the time there was no # 2. I blame the coaching staff for continuing to put ONLY HE out there when he OBVIOUSLY HAS NOT BEEN TAUGHT anything. Stepped backwards this season. WAY WORSE as a QB. No one brought in ever to stem the tide. 11 games LOST of 27 starts last 2 years and I we and Bill King cannot question the COACHES ?

0-9 vs teams ending top 25 and he is all they played, EVER.

Um, there are some factual inaccuracies above. Mark Richt was a Quarterback at the University of Miami. Clearly, he was a pretty good football player in his time. He knows the game well or he wouldn’t have his job.

Be upset that they should have won that game and they peed it away with ultra conservative playcalling and hinging a win on a really long field goal.

I posted this post by :

“The article is pretty much dead on. Impossible to continue to defend Richt,Bobo and Murray.”

at 3:25 am this morning and then replied to it.

Is Aaron Murray your CHILDREN ?

What are you Lauren Murray ? You sure are not his Daddy, are YOU ?

I don’t even blame him for his horrid games vs teams who end up top 25 at 0-9, running up his stats vs teams who are not top 25 not today, not ever. I blame the coaches.

Anyway : Tell me you read this and still POST THAT CRUDOLA ANYWAY ?
