UGA fared pretty well in the revamped 2012 SEC football schedule released Wednesday morning.
It’s official that Georgia travels to Missouri Sept. 8 and the South Carolina game, traditionally the conference opener for the Dogs the past couple of decades, moves to Oct. 6, replacing the previously scheduled trip to Alabama.
The Dogs lose the open date ahead of Florida as the visit to Kentucky, originally scheduled for Oct. 13, moves to Oct. 20. But the Gators will have it even tougher, playing host to South Carolina the week before playing Georgia.
Here’s Georgia’s revised conference schedule: Sept. 8 at Missouri, Sept. 22 Vanderbilt in Athens, Sept. 29 Tennessee in Athens, Oct. 6 at South Carolina, Oct. 20 at Kentucky, Oct. 27 Florida in Jacksonville, Nov. 3 Ole Miss in Athens, Nov. 10 at Auburn. The nonconference home schedule looks to remain the same as before, facing Buffalo (Sept. 1), Florida Atlantic (Sept. 15), Georgia Southern (Nov. 17) and Georgia Tech (Nov. 24).
The bottom line is that the Dogs will again have a favorable conference schedule. South Carolina, on the other hand, must face LSU and Arkansas as its SEC West opponents. You can bet they’re not happy in Columbia.
As for the SEC opener against Missouri, that was widely anticipated so I tried to get a feel for Mizzou by watching a good bit of the Independence Bowl the other night. Unfortunately, North Carolina was such a dismal opponent that it was tough to tell just how good the Tigers were, though it’s obvious quarterback James Franklin, who passed for 132 yards and led Missouri in rushing with 142 yards, is dangerous.
Georgia looks to be the likely favorite again in the SEC East, barring too many losses of key players to the NFL draft. I wasn’t thrilled to hear this week that Branden Smith is one of the Dogs considering leaving early. No doubt the uncertainty about Smith is a factor in the Georgia coaches considering having star wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell possibly also play cornerback some next year, though it’s difficult to gauge just how serious they are about that. Let’s hope the continuing development of Nick Marshall at cornerback makes that unnecessary.
So, overall, I’d say the Dogs are sitting pretty for 2012. What do you think?

I like it and I like SC having top play Ark and LSU and we drop Bama. Key is if guys stay who could leave. Others may think they are better than they are and go to the draft. Branden Smith, for example. The guy is barely a starter and maybe the 4th best DB at UGA. I hope his draft assessment opens his eyes. Great talent but not produced for the NFL yet.

If Charles/Rambo/Smith come back at worst this team heads in the ‘12 season PreSeason Top10. Many will even have them as a darkhorse MNC team. I can this team going 11-1, stumbling blocks in Mizzou,USCe or against UF, but if this team navigated a 10-2 season with all the Freshman then with a year of seasoning the fanbase should expect to take the next step. Barring defections and injurys then why not say perfection? 12-0 with a matchup with LSU or Bama to go play for the MNC.

An easy schedule is important since the Dogs consistently lose to good teams. The difference between this year’s record and the past 3-4 years is tied directly to the number of good teams played. Yep, Bama dodges the bullet, and I have news for Rambo, one decent season after having had two lousy ones will not get you drafted in upper rounds. Rambo needs senior season as much as anyone.
UGA rushing attack will be much improved in 2012. I will not predict leader of the 2012 tailback pack, but will predict much, much better running game than we have seen in some years at UGA. Coach Richt is right, Richard Samuel IV will be a force in 2012. UGA trending up, way up.
Bama trending down. LSU takes care of business this time. Bama loses most key D players from 2011, Saban will get bored after two seasons with no championships. Will leave after 2012 season. Looks like Gunner versus Mett for starter at LSU in 2012, both will likely play, but LSU will not repeat with first year starters at QB.
Murray will be much more polished in 2012 after offseason tweaking. UGA receiving corps will be incredible. Offensive line will progress with new starters.
No worries in defensive backfield, Swann and Nick Marshall will show what “Dreams are made of.” Sanders Commings will continue to improve, and will have outstanding 2012 season as well. Will have one of the most feared safeties in all of college ball in Shawn Williams.
Haters better get ready to get that hiney spanked by them “Junkyard Dawgs” for a while…heh heh heh!

The SEC is going to have to abandon the 8 game conference schedule. As much as I like the apparent “ease” of next year’s schedule, only getting one team from the West who isn’t a “usual” opponent won’t do much to help the Dawgs in the minds of the talking heads on ESPN. I would trade Ole Miss for a Bama, or LSU, or Arky.
Dawg fans are going to be going through serious withdrawal in September. We don’t start until the 8th AND we have a bye the week after?
I really like the fact that we don’t play SC until October. Also, neither UF or UGA has a bye week before the WLOCP — we play UK the week before, UF plays SC — niiiiiiice.

That way they will have a sporting chance of catching us in the second half.

Even if UGA goes undefeated or loses one, its going to be hard for them to get National recognition with that light of a schedule (no good SEC West teams and nothing to shout about non-conference). The AD should have tried to schedule a good non-conference game rather than just taking the easy wins vs GA Southern, Buffalo, and FL Atlantic all in the same season. That’s what the top SEC programs do (think LSU vs Oregon & West VA or Alabama vs Penn State) and its the reason they get consistent national recognition.

Ga. Tech notes: Sun Bowl appearance ‘a big deal’
The Yellow Jackets have shown enthusiasm about playing Utah in the Sun Bowl and being in El Paso, which will give them more of an opportunity to end their bowl-game losing streak, now at six games, than they ever had last year.
Small turnout
About 5,000 out-of-town visitors are expected for the game. That will be one of the lowest visitor turnouts for the Sun Bowl in several years, the El Paso Times reported Tuesday. The game had one of its top visitor showings last year, when an estimated 16,000 fans traveled to El Paso for the Notre Dame-Miami game.
“Overall, we’ll be very happy with 5,000,” said Veronica Castro, an official with the El Paso Convention and Visitors Bureau.

I wish the SEC would strongly encourage every conference member to put at least one opponent (maybe two) from a BCS conference (preferably top 25) on their schedule. Whereas it may not work out as well for Vandy, UK, Ole Miss – I think it would go a long way to improve the National perception of the SEC. That being said – it was pretty stupid for LSU to schedule Oregon as the first game of the season, a little warm-up would not have hurt. Georgia, at this stage, more formidable non-conference opponents are in order, especially at home.
You have a whole lot of talent and the team, if it is to become elite, needs to show that on the field against at the very least one national power.

@ Laughable – If the SEC wants to remain a dominant conference, they have to continue to put difficult non-conference games on the schedule. @DIT – yes, the SEC 100% controls the conference schedule. Just saying the AD has A LOT of control over the other four games. Many SEC opponents have built in rivals like GT, Florida State, and Clemson that must be put on the schedule for sake of tradition, but that still gives three games to play with. Moving to GA from Louisiana recently, I will say having the easy schedule at the beginning would be comforting and LSU has totally ruined some seasons in the first couple of games; however, big wins can set up big seasons (LSU vs VT in 2007 and LSU vs Oregon this year). Props for Boise this year – I was even wearing some red and black that day (though it didn’t turn out like any of us wanted)

Just checked out LSU’s schedule for next year – our non-conference is also laughable (its going to be a down year anyhow). Picked up A & M on the schedule as well as USC and FLA from the East. With the normal SEC West foes – Bama, Arkansas Auburn – its still no easy schedule. I predict LSU at 10-2 at the end of the regular season.

Bill, I have often stated these dawgs will hunt not bark at the moon. The 2012 Uga team is no different. With some loses in personel the “D” will be strong again. Look for new faces at some positions that will look like no one left. One thing for sure, There will be a stable full of horses and the “O” will run, count one it. There will be DEPTH at “RB”. The “O” line will have DEPTH, count on it. I am exicted about the 2012 season and th chance to repeat as East Champs. Maybe SEC Champs.

One of the “TE” is looking at the NFL and there others on the “O” that are looking. I’m just saying if some things happen in loss of personel we will still be strong. the replacements are very good. I was asking TigerinGA about his “down year’ comment. That said, I think UGA’s biggest concern in 2012 will be depth on the OL. Losing Jones and Glenn will be huge. I know good things have been said about David Andrews but losing Jones’ experience and leadership is going to hurt. I hope Theus turns out to be as good as advertised. Spare Chris Burnett, we don’t have many guys returning with much experience. Hopefully Coach Friend whips those guys into shape in the off season.

Also – if we win the BCS, Les won’t be able to keep them focused for a repeat – will lose to Bama for sure and likely at least one of Arkansas or USC or A&M. “2012 Schedule Works in Bulldogs’ Favor” This is a joke. It’s easy to encapsulate the rational here. UGA would rather play soft teams to have a good record rather than play and compete with QUALITY teams. UGA believes if they do play QUALITY teams they would not have a good record.
UGA opponents Florida Atlantic had a 1-11 record last season and will have a new coach next season and Buffalo won only 3 games. Isn’t Ga Southern a FCS school?
Wake Forest has scheduled teams like Oklahoma, Nebraska, Syracuse, ND, and on ocassion an SEC team because they have always wanted to play QUALITY opponents.

Mark Richt teams underperform with “easy” teams which may make next year frustrating. A new philosophy may by CMR may come in useful. If they adopt the idea of trying to come out and beat every team soundly, I think it could be a great season. If they come out thinking that they can beat everybody on their schedule, or they have an easy schedule; we are going to lose some games we shouldn’t. That has been an unfortunate characteristic of CMR teams. I am hoping he gets these kids motivated for next season.

The only negative for Dawgs is that every team in league plays 4 SEC games in their stadium EXCEPT the Dawgs who only have 3 home and 5 away, not quite fair, but it is what it is.

Georgia did not drop Bama….
Bama did not drop UGA….
The SEC office added 2 teams to the confrence and had to adjust schedules to accomodate. They could only play with confrence games to make room for Mo. on the schedule. Bama was the only choice.
Uga did not make the schedule!

Adding A&M and Mizzou will add one lose to the best teams (Bama and LSU) and two to the other teams. Trying to get your team up each week will be a task. Mizzou would won the East this year playing the same schedule UGA did in 2011. Both A&M and Mizzou will no longer have to prepare for all the passing spread teams and this will help them both get better quicker beside both of these teams will get a big bump with recruiting since a lot of their state players will state with them since they will get to play against the big boys and get to stay close to home as well. If you think you will run over A&M and Mizzou in 2012 then you need to revist that in coming months. Roll Tide

I did not know that John Jenkins was seriously considering the NFL. I wonder what these coaches like Les Miles are doing differently in order to keep players around until they are fifth year seniors. Jenkins comes to UGA, is there one year and bolts? UGA is going to have to do something different in their recruiting, or their language to these recruits on the front end. If all we were going to get from Jenkins was one year, I would have never offered him. We could have more than likely done about as well without him this year, and since we did not win anything anyway in 2011, that scholly would then be considered a total waste.
The opinion I’m getting from the large boosters that I know here in Columbus, is that Coach Mark Richt is being paid a handsome salary to recruit football players to the University of Georgia for the purpose of furthering UGA’s cause to win as many contests as possible, to be in competition for SEC and national championship opportunities. This, of course would be considered secondary to being a student of the University of Georgia for the goal of completing enough credits to secure a degree from said University.
Jumping to the NFL after being around three years instead of four is bad enough, but it seems that in recent years at UGA players are leaving after being in school only one semester? This is totally unacceptable. If a three year player has been told that he will be drafted in the first or highly in the second round of the NFL draft, then they cannot be blamed for wanting to go, but leaving just for the sake of leaving is not a very intelligent decision on the player’s part. The salary cap is one thing, but to go before you are truly valuable to an NFL team undercuts your worth, and an early injury can wipe you out, leaving you without even a degree to fall back on.
Bottom line is Mark Richt, and all of his assistants that are heavily involved in the recruiting proccess are going to have to start putting the University of Georgia’s interests and for that matter the BEST interest of the players first in it’s recruitment. Nineteen and twenty year olds left to make important decisions about their futures are not usually going to make the correct ones.

You are correct, the SEC decided they not need a blowout with Alabama crushing UGA, thus they removed the Alabama game for UGA, and replaced it with Mizzou.
Keep in mind, UGA still has Michigan State, so I would not be looking for forward to next year already……

Here is the deal, from what I have gathered from some folks supposedly in the know, and this comes without the purposely carefully worded statements from Greg NcGarity, Coach Mark Richt is going to be expected to win the SEC next year by people who matter more than the newly hired A. D. at this point. Richt needs to do whatever it takes to get to the place that has eluded him for several years since he has been at Georgia, and for any of you who think that his seat has cooled just because Ears McGarity said so is ill informed. Richt would do well to do everything and anything he can, within the rules of course, to insure that he loses the least amount of non-replaceable players as possible to the NFL, or otherwise.

Wohhhh!!! I feel some sensitivity on this blog…..that’s right, anyone who offers constructive criticism about this tanked program is attacked…this is the the reason the UGA program sucks, plain and simple. No one in Athens is allowed to attack the program or coaching staff.
UGA has a weak schedule this, and has another weak schedule next year. This blog has nothing to do with GT or any other program, just the UGA program, which is in the ditch. You played LSU, what happened? You played South Carolina, what happened? You opened with Boise, what happened?
Just a lot of wishful thinking in Athens…

Defend your program….go ahead…try….it is easy to label someone and tell them to leave, or you can stand your ground and fire back. That’s right, you can’t, because your coaches and AD are both incapable of winning the big ones (i.e. LSU). The SEC is nothing to write home about, heck Mizzou would have won the east with the schedule you had in 2011.

What Missouri and Texas A& M will soon find out is all eight team’s they play from the SEC have the ability to beat you and there is no let up as far as preparing for the next game, That’s why the non conference game are usually cup cake games. First you need a great Quarterback . What makes him great instead of just good depend’s on if he is SMART enough not to make too many mistakes which will lose most of the close game’s. Next is depth from running back, linemen and defensive back’s . And third speed especially from your linebacker’s.
Actually Missouri and Texas A& M should fit in well with the SEC because they both believe in having a strong running game, unlike a lot of team’s in the Big 12.

The only team’s that usually don’t have a depth problem is LSU and Alabama . One of our problem’s at Georgia has been depth but part of that problem was solved when we hired Grantham, that’s why it is so important to give him at least a 3 year extension and bump his salary up. He will probably be receptive to stay at Georgia a few more year’s and then he will be ready to become a head coach but we can take advantage of having a great defensive coordinator for 3 to 5 more year’s.
As much as I like Bobo he will never be head coach material . He can’t even manage all the offensive position’s and his low salary, for someone that has been coordinator for 5 year’s, confirms our AD feel’s the same way.

I worry about playing at Mizzou early in the season when they have a history of playing well, especially at home. Also on paper UGA, South Carolina and Mizzou look to be the strongest teams in the east. That early game will be big and we better be ready to play our best cause that’s what we are going to see from this new set of SEC Tigers. Tenn, Fla and Vandy are the darkhorses but they all may be better as well. A lot will depend on the next few weeks and how many of our players we are going to lose to the NFL. Bottom line is that it is way too early to predict the strength of the 2012 schedule.
