UGA fans have visions of four- and five-star tailbacks dancing in our heads

Isaiah Crowell is talking the right talk. (Associated Press)

Isaiah Crowell is talking the right talk. (Associated Press)

Coming back from a week’s vacation, there’s plenty to talk about, even if there thankfully wasn’t any major news in Athens amid the continuing coaching upheaval in the SEC, with South Carolina losing Ellis Johnson the latest development.

The rumor mill was working overtime about Mark Richt and Isaiah Crowell, but Richt’s not going anywhere despite the efforts of some folks in the media to send him to Texas A&M or Penn State.

And apparently Crowell isn’t going anywhere either, contrary to all those bulletin board sources, though he does find himself behind Boo Malcome on the depth chart heading into the Outback Bowl. Still, a little competition never hurt and it’s encouraging that Crowell is saying all the right things about needing to apply himself more and take more responsibility. Maybe he’s finally growing up.

There’s also been the usual wondering you normally get this time of year about which underclassmen will leave early for the NFL (with Orson Charles and Bacarri Rambo seeming the most likely) and which ones still want to play college ball (thank you, Jarvis Jones).

Plus, of course, speculation on whether backup quarterback Hutson Mason will transfer or take a redshirt year to give himself some class separation from starter Aaron Murray (I’m hoping he chooses the latter); Outback bowl tickets have been a hotter item in Athens than in East Lansing (not surprising); and we’ve learned that the ridiculous NCAA rule book doesn’t allow Richt to play Santa Claus with his staff unless he clears it first with the athletic administration.

A Twitter dream ... (Melchizedek Lockwood)

A Twitter dream ... (Melchizedek Lockwood)

Meanwhile, it might not have been visions of sugarplums dancing in our heads, but after his visit to Athens four-star running back prospect Mike Davis tweeting that “IV Horsemen” picture of him along with Crowell, UGA five-star commitment Keith Marshall and fellow four-star prospect Todd Gurley certainly had Dogs fans dreaming of big things happening in the running game.

How about a Dream Tailback Corps this year?

Need one of Davis or Gurley. Rather them be focusing on switching Greenes commit from Bama, and signing Avery. Lots of top talent still on the board and thankfully UGA is in the running for almost all of them. With Richt securing his job though there needs to be a lot of fucous on getting back some recruits lost due to the instability of Richts job at the beginning of the season (AKA lots of negative recruiting by Kirby Smart to correct for).

Word is that if both gurley and davis committed right now we would take them. But once we start landing others like J.H.C, and others, we will only take one. Another thing to consider is if we get both of them then henry most likely wont come next year. So gurley and davis now and no henry or Davis/Gurley and Henry is the real question. Personally I think we get Davis and Gurley goes with UNC, and we take Henry for 2012.

That would be nice, but a few of ya’ll are correct about Gurley..heavy lean to the Tar Heels. On the other hand, Mike Davis is believed to be a commit waiting to happen! So, we have power backs..Malcome and Marshall, we have shifty scat-backs in Davis and Henry, and in the middle is Crowell. That, to me, would remedy the issue! Go Dawgs!!…and Merry Christmas, ya’ll!

Crowell will tell you you need several top backs in this league. There are no freshman that can take the pounding of a starter in this league. Georgia may not rate as the top recruiting class in the nation in 2012, but if they get the top prospects to fill the holes, it will be tops in my opinion. The team is very young and looks only to improve in the next 3 years. The biggest challenge will be to keep the horses from leaving to go to the NFL.

The backs now see what LSU did this year and how the NFL works backs. The days of a one back system are gone. They want long careers and talent around them. Come one down the odds are one or more will not finish up either due to grades, injury or being asked to leave. I would love to see all four play together for their entire careers! Man that would be nice a true balanced attack.

Should be a pretty easy repeat for the SEC East next season guys. Muschamp can’t even find a OC or strength coach at the present. Major problems down there I hear. I don’t see anyone who can touch us in 2012. Dooley will be out by week 5.

I see linebacker Washington seriously considering leaving UGA. Richt’s program has become the biggest “Stepping stone to the NFL” program in the nation. It makes you wonder what he tells these top recruits to get their LOI. All of these early departures from Richt’s UGA teams have led UGA to remain in a constant rebuilding funk that does not allow for serious competetion with the top teams in the league, and in almost every instance leads to blowout losses to the leagues top teams.

Large boosters here in Columbus are wary of bowing down to Richt with large contract extension just because he won the ten easiest games on his schedule only to be embarrassed at the Dome once again. The comment I was given by one was “If we are going to have to rebuild again anyway, we may as well do it with a proven coach”. He also did not mean another stupid assistant coach hire in hopes that he may turn in to a head coach someday either, (Kirby Smart).

There are going to be very large expectations from the 2012 Bulldogs by large contributors to the Football Program, and they are afraid that if Richt receives a large conteact and fails to produce that things will get ugly in Athens like they did in the nineties when Ray Goff was left in the program too long.

If Richt is going to remain in Athens as UGA’s Head Coach, then he will have to find a way to beat the LSU’s of the world. I am not convinced that there is a lot of confidence in that at this point.

I read where Ray Drew got a lot of first team snaps in yesterday’s practice. I guess they are already scrambling to fill the gap that will be left by Washington. Richt should play Drew first with some backup duty given to Washington to ready Drew for the 2012 season. I know that winning the bowl game is important to next year, but having a capable linebacker to actually play the games in 2012 is just as important.

Richt had better have some very capable O linemen ready for the 2012 campaign as well, as this has been the achilles heal to the offense for several years, and is said to be getting to be a sticking point.

If Richt wants to remain as coach in Athens as he says he does, then he has to stop embarrassing the Bulldog Nation every time he plays a formidable opponent. UGA’s Football brand has been damaged ever since the 2008 flop, and respect of that nature is hard to regain. A lot of people, including myself want to complain about the lack of respect given to UGA by the national media such as ESPN, but Georgia had all of the ESPN backing in the world, including Herbstreit after the 2007 season and garnered a #1 ranking to start the 2008 season. Then the blowout losses began, and all respect was lost. The way the talking heads see it, if you are good enough to be ranked #1 going into a season, then even if you don’t achieve the ultimate goal, you should not be blown out and embarrassed every time you play the other top teams that are the very teams that you have to beat to get there. Losing to LSU by three points, as Bama did, or even ten points is one thing but forty is quite another story.

Having good backs is one thing, effectively employing them is quite another. I miss the little pitch to the backs which, in my opinion, gives them more time to assess the running lanes. Bobo says that was replaced with a play that is basicly the same. It’s is where the quarterback moves toward the back, making the handoff as he is moving toward the hole. I don’t think it produces long runs like the pitch. We should be getting a lot more long runs.

UGA is a passing offense, havn’t had but maybe 2 1000 yard rushers in 11 seasons. Don’t matter if Herschel Walker is running for UGA, Richt & Bobo don’t believe in running the ball, it’s a pass oriented, turnover prone in big games model of offense that doesn’t work in the SEC.

None of the past 10 leaders in passing in the SEC have won the SEC.

You win big games in SEC by running the ball, and stopping the run on defense.

While you have those stats up there, tell us where UGA has ranked in that category. Havent typically been “that” team have they? You quote a stat that doesnt even support your point. Oh yeah, it is SO IMPORTANT to have stability at the head coaching position. Stability trumps quality every time.

After all, it took Saban, Chizik, Miles, and Meyer all of 2 or 3 seasons to WIN A FREAKING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

So much for instability hurting recruiting.

Get a top notch coach in here and give them 2-3 seasons to win a NC like four of our SEC brethren did.

I have not studied the coaching landscape enough to suggest names to replace Richt. I can tell a non-championship coach when I see one. The search committee should be capable of uncovering “names” that will do better than Richt. Jim Harbaugh was my #1 choice by a landslide, but we decided to keep Richt and watch Harbaugh go to the NFL, which he would have done anyway. I prefer strong collegiate assistants, or HC’s from a lesser program. I would check out the Iowa State coach. That’s a very tough place to win. What about OK St? He may be happy there given all the $ that has poured into the program. The Boise State coach is strong. This ain’t that tough. Look at programs where coaches have overachieved and go after one. That’s how Chizik, Meyer, Miles, and Meyer were all discovered.

And with his experience in the SEC having had success and failure, he would be an excellent hire at somebody else’ expence paying for all that. . Plus he would be is a perfect fit for our program, personality wise. I’d say in a short couple years we could expect him to have the program right up there, or be looking again, same as with anyone else.

In fact, I predict that is exactly who we will hire right after the bowl game.

You guys that will never be happy until we win an NC are living in a fantasy world. NOT because Richt won’t ever get them there, and NOT because as the trolls say, UGA is and always will be a second-tier program. We could have an undefeated season with a couple of really close games, and the powers that be at ESPN would do everything in their power to lobby against UGA playing in the BCS Championship game. Why? Herbstreet was QB for Ohio State when we beat them in the 1993 Citrus Bowl, (Mike Bobo QB for UGA), and Mark May played for Pitt and thinks that they got cheated out of a shot at the national title by not being paired against UGA in the Sugar Bowl that year. (They got bombed by FSU in their bowl game. I still don’t understand why he thinks they could have stopped Herschel – no one else did.)
As long as they are on the ESPN broadcasting staff, they only way UGA will ever play in the BCS Championship game is if they do go undefeated as I stated above, and win every game by a large margin. Everyone knows you have to have a little bit of luck along the way, too, but a couple close games where we eke out a win late won’t cut it with those losers.

RxDawg the pendulum is swinging back to UGa? What will that get the Dawgs? An SEC championship and preseason #1 Ranking but nothing more? Whatever, AltamahaDawg, the fact is they DID have Tebow and Meyer DID win a NC in his 2nd season and won another one in his short tenure there.

Richt had Matt Stafford, the #1 overall NFL draft pick, and Knowshown (”Run out of bounds like a sissy”) Moreno, the #13 overall pick in the same NFL draft, and a host of other talent, recognized by many as the pre-season #1 team, and he managed to squander that in a horribly disappointing season.

What excuses Dwayne. for what? I am telling you that your “answer” to me was not about the “question” asked.

But on this other topic, Had AM played WHEN? He was injured till very late in the season. Are you really saying you wanted to swap his RS senior year out right then? To bring in a true freshman to play a few games, (and lose them most probably).

OoltewahDawg, we have not deserved to be in a championship game since 1980. Mark May probably thinks they could have beat Georgia because Pitt did in fact beat Georgia two years later in the Herschel era.
AltamahaDawg, Chris Leak was the starting QB for Florida in 2002.

The biggest problem with UGA is the culture of excuse-makers as represented by the folks on this board. You have so many excuses you couldn’t fit them all in Santa’s huge bag. Everybody else cheats, ESPN is against us, we don’t get any breaks, the refs are against us, the NCAA is against us, blah blah blah blah blah!!!
Get over it. No one is against us. And no one can create a culture of excellence except for us.

I had to start saving some of your crap so I could let you know how dumb you are when I finished looking through the posts.

You take idiot of the day and then some (maybe idiot of the week).

If you dont think that ESPN hates UGA you have been living under a rock. Compare 2007 to now thats all the proof you need. 07 they said we didnt deserve it for not winning the conf, no mention of the disparity in losses. but in 2011 its ok for Bama to get a SECOND shot, even though they didnt win division or conference. Everyone knows ESPN hates us, excpet for retards like you.

So bc Pitt beat UGA with Herschel 2 years later that means they would have beaten them if they had played in Sugar bowl? ahahahahahaha thats the worst logic I have ever heard. Was there coaching turnover, did any players leave, did new players come in. Did they play outside or inside, was it sunny or night, was windy or calm, was it cold or hot?

FYI since your prob too dumb to understand that, that means there are too many variables to say they would have idiot.

As for Floridas 02 title. They owe a lot of it, and I MEAN A LOT OF IT to Tebow. Throwing that gay jump TD pass to stun LSU. Without that TD pass they lose the game and prob dont make it all the way. Tebow was their biggest weapon that year even if Leak started at QB.

So thanks for being an idiot, it has been a pleasure letting you know how dumb you are. If you continue to post I will continue to laugh at you and remind you how dumb you are.

I said when not due to injury. The Injury years were where more backs got fewer carriers. Without injuries Bobo and Richt give 1 RB the carries. Notice how much Murry runs too. I know it is because the NFL sized O-Line UGa has sucks, but it shows even more Pass Attempts that failed so Murray had to run. those 4 RB’s would be Stupid to go to UGA because 1 will become the coach’s favorite. It happens EVERY TIME.

wow your an idiot. This is why nerds shouldnt post bc they dont know football. Richt shares the rock with the RB’s that are good enough to tote the rock. IF you dont practice well you dont play. He has always had this philoshophy and always will.

The point that 4 equally talented RB aren’t going to get the exact proportional amount of carries is a pretty weak attempt to criticize us any way.

I dont know about that. He seems pretty far out there and not very informed on how things really work.

He is sitting there arguing about pulling Murrays redshirt to get him some experience and take over for Joe. Thats the sound of a fringe retard to me.

Redshirting him gave him the ability to learn the playbook and mature a little before actually getting into the game. Throwing him out there at the end of the season his True Freshman year would have been the worst move Richt had made to that point in his career. It makes no sense hence why it was never even contimplated. Joe wasnt anything spectactular but he didnt stink it up. He actually had some really good games. He wasn’t just sitting around doing nothing. I understand the “game experience”, but its a poor trade off to me. He was not in shape, wasn’t fair to everybody else, and it’s just specualtion what “could” have happened. He “could” have got beat up too.

There is also this small matter of beating out the guy in front of you to start games. Are you in favor of just starting people based on thier future potential, and them not earning it?

Eventually we’ll breakthrough and those 10-11 wins will be a NCS. However, we cannot expect to play for it every couple of years competing with teams with more money, less rigorous academics (not that ours are all that rigorous), and no compunction when it comes to over-signing. ColumbusDawg……..I am a former CHS Blue Devil and I respectfully disagree.

CMR is a fine coach. A leader of men, and a great recruiter of parents preferences. If I was a kid, I would steer clear of UGA if I was a football player, if my goal was to party. The clamps are firmly locked atm.

As long as we have CTG, I believe we are the odds-on favorites to win the SEC outright, in 2012.

Also overlooked is Coach T. His son was mediocre at best, but that man reeled the program in during last offseason. Look at all the transfers, the improved conditioning (IC entered late), and the decrease in off the field bs and it is directly attributable to Coach T.

We are still going uphill, y’all…….

A couple more offensive linemen and another RB, and the rest of the recruiting cycle can be used to build up depth for the team. UGA isn’t in too bad of a condition now I think. Recruits are still considering UGA and that is probably more than could be said at the beginning of the season.

Four Horsemen and Seven Blocks of Granite????? That is funny….With all the receivers on the team on one will ever use two tight ends and four running backs in the backfield at the same time. We never used the FB but once except to block and occasionally come out of the backfield. What makes you think we will bench the WRs and the QBs…talk about mass exodus to other teams….No way will they not redshirt one of the three backs if we do get them….Remember what happened to Samuel…Ran the ball a few times and used on ko team the same year we had Morino… What a waste of talent? Get some offensive linemen and get debth and use the backs we have. Quit dreaming what might me a nightmare.

Stephen A. Dawg: The SEC (L)East Champs, best of the worst.

December 21st, 2011
10:38 am

If the SEC Eastern Division stays down it won’t do its champion one bit of good in the SECCG versus Bama or LSU, because they will get blown out. Georgia proved it this season by squeezing out the East title away from SCarolina only to be routed by the West champion LSU. With Florida and Tennessee being down only SCarolina stands in Georgia’s way to the East crown and then getting crowned/clobbered in the Dome league title game again in 2012. To avoid a repeat humiliation, Georgia must have a total offensive makeover geared to a power run game so it can dominate/blowout the weak teams in the East. In other words UGA must start routing Florida and Tennessee in the same fashion Bama and LSU routed them. The 24-20 sqeaker win over UF by Georgia did not impress Saban, Miles or the public nationally because everybody knew the Gators were really down. Why do you think Charlie Weis abandoned UF for lowly Kansas ? The UF-FSU was the worst offensive game of the year. Both teams at on point had more punts and turnovers than yards at one point. YEEECK !!

Richt MUST open up the competition at QB or he will be stuck with Murray, a stat guy who can’t win a game versus a meaningful opponent. Nobody cares about stats but losers and all-time passing stat records at UGA means nothing just ask David Greene. Richt must throw away the 90s FSU dump-pass-first playbook which features small weak-armed QBs, and bring in a proven Offensive Coordinator, like Michigan’s Al Borges, to put the Dawgs offensively in a true I-formation, pro-style run attack. UGA must build depth on the O & D lines and play much more physical on both sides of the ball. Recruit, maintain, and coach SEC calibre RBs without all the drama. We should never see another 5′-5”,160 lb. RB at UGA again unless he is the real second coming of Darren Sproles.

If Richt will commit to change UGA will have a real chance at the SEC title and then the MNC. But if Richt continues to go without making necessary adjustments eventually Florida and Tennessee will catch the Dawgs and surpass them again with the next 3 to 4 years. At UF, Muschamp is less than Zook, and AD Foley will have him gone in less than two years. At Tennessee, Dooley won’t survive next season under AD Hart, who is secretly drawing up a list of replacements as we speak. So it is up to Richt to make the moves now or he runs the risk of being ran out like Muschamp and Dooley eventually will be. Georgia cannot continue to go on being embarrassed and dominated by ranked opponents and think it is entitled to national respect like LSU or Bama gets. Nuff Said, Go Dawgs !!

There are still a ton of good players left and some in junior college that could possibly contribute. I’m sure Coach Richt and his staff are putting the pieces together for players that want to come to Georgia and will make an impact!

I hope all the juniors return this up-coming year but wish them the very best if they decide to go pro- thanks for coming to Georgia and your presence on the field would surely be missed!
