UGA fans have visions of four- and five-star tailbacks dancing in our heads

Isaiah Crowell is talking the right talk. (Associated Press)

Coming back from a week’s vacation, there’s plenty to talk about, even if there thankfully wasn’t any major news in Athens amid the continuing coaching upheaval in the SEC, with South Carolina losing Ellis Johnson the latest development.

The rumor mill was working overtime about Mark Richt and Isaiah Crowell, but Richt’s not going anywhere despite the efforts of some folks in the media to send him to Texas A&M or Penn State.

And apparently Crowell isn’t going anywhere either, contrary to all those bulletin board sources, though he does find himself behind Boo Malcome on the depth chart heading into the Outback Bowl. Still, a little competition never hurt and it’s encouraging that Crowell is saying all the right things about needing to apply himself more and take more responsibility. Maybe he’s finally growing up.

There’s also been the usual wondering you normally get this time of year about which underclassmen will leave early for the NFL (with Orson Charles and Bacarri Rambo seeming the most likely) and which ones still want to play college ball (thank you, Jarvis Jones).

Plus, of course, speculation on whether backup quarterback Hutson Mason will transfer or take a redshirt year to give himself some class separation from starter Aaron Murray (I’m hoping he chooses the latter); Outback bowl tickets have been a hotter item in Athens than in East Lansing (not surprising); and we’ve learned that the ridiculous NCAA rule book doesn’t allow Richt to play Santa Claus with his staff unless he clears it first with the athletic administration.

A Twitter dream ... (Melchizedek Lockwood)

A Twitter dream ... (Melchizedek Lockwood)

Meanwhile, it might not have been visions of sugarplums dancing in our heads, but after his visit to Athens four-star running back prospect Mike Davis tweeting that “IV Horsemen” picture of him along with Crowell, UGA five-star commitment Keith Marshall and fellow four-star prospect Todd Gurley certainly had Dogs fans dreaming of big things happening in the running game.

How about a Dream Tailback Corps this year?

P.S. Dominate bowl performance by Georgia could easily move them Pre-Season top 10 if not top 5. Just my opinion.

Oh yeah, it is SO IMPORTANT to have stability at the head coaching position. Stability trumps quality every time.

After all, it took Saban, Chizik, Miles, and Meyer all of 2 or 3 seasons to WIN A FREAKING NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP.

So much for instability hurting recruiting.

Get a top notch coach in here and give them 2-3 seasons to win a NC like four of our SEC brethren did.

Dammit.

I agree, Bama Mike. The Dawgs have to take care of business in Tampa first.

Congrats on signing Yeldon! Man, that sure got under the Barners’ skin.

CMR broke a rule. I am sure every coach feels the administrative staff is under -ppreciated and underpaid. But they are state employees with set salaries. While a nice gesture, Once it is noted by CMR they are underpaid and his goodwill is made public, our good friends over at the IRS are sending out tax modifications to those lucky recepients. Just tell CMR to stay in “The Happy Place”

I think getting beat by LSU was the best thing to happen regarding recruiting. It showed how heavy depth works to a teams advantage and the glory can be shared. I think the LSU model is a great pitch, as is the 4 horseman idea.

I have not studied the coaching landscape enough to suggest names to replace Richt. I can tell a non-championship coach when I see one. The search committee should be capable of uncovering “names” that will do better than Richt. Jim Harbaugh was my #1 choice by a landslide, but we decided to keep Richt and watch Harbaugh go to the NFL, which he would have done anyway. I prefer strong collegiate assistants, or HC’s from a lesser program. I would check out the Iowa State coach. That’s a very tough place to win. What about OK St? He may be happy there given all the $ that has poured into the program. The Boise State coach is strong. This ain’t that tough. Look at programs where coaches have overachieved and go after one. That’s how Chizik, Meyer, Miles, and Meyer were all discovered.

Say BOO and NOW Crowell wants to jump.
Those 4 in the backfield would be special for UGa, but I still don’t think the EGOs will allow it.
Richt an Bobo have proven they don’t Rotate equal talent very well. The coach’s FAVORITE will emerge and upset the rest.

We would interview and hire a guy exactly like Mark Richt for Georgia. And with his experience in the SEC having had success and failure, he would be an excellent hire at somebody else’ expence paying for all that. . Plus he would be is a perfect fit for our program, personality wise. I’d say in a short couple years we could expect him to have the program right up there, or be looking again, same as with anyone else.

In fact, I predict that is exactly who we will hire right after the bowl game.

When UGA takes care of Florida in 2012

December 20th, 2011
3:07 pm

When UGA handles a weak Floirda team in 2012, coached by a tantrum splitting HC, will that make it like UGA over the last 8 or 9 years …………………. with4 or 5 UGA wins??? The 22 years are over and now, the tide shifts ………………over all time ……………all time and most importantly while I WAS at UGA, we OWN FLORIDA ……………….ALWAYS HAVE >>>>>>>>>>>>>>ALWAYS WILL.

Florida will be on troubled waters for the next two or three years IF they do not fire Muschamp. If they DO, then it will take maybe 5 or 6 years of rebuilding.

Florida …………………. it is over so get ready for history to regain its momentum.

5 or 6 years of rebuilding at Florida? Some of these comments aren’t even worth objecting to.

It took Urban Meyer 2 seasons to win a NC after the Ron Zook debacle.

You guys that will never be happy until we win an NC are living in a fantasy world. NOT because Richt won’t ever get them there, and NOT because as the trolls say, UGA is and always will be a second-tier program. We could have an undefeated season with a couple of really close games, and the powers that be at ESPN would do everything in their power to lobby against UGA playing in the BCS Championship game. Why? Herbstreet was QB for Ohio State when we beat them in the 1993 Citrus Bowl, (Mike Bobo QB for UGA), and Mark May played for Pitt and thinks that they got cheated out of a shot at the national title by not being paired against UGA in the Sugar Bowl that year. (They got bombed by FSU in their bowl game. I still don’t understand why he thinks they could have stopped Herschel – no one else did.)
As long as they are on the ESPN broadcasting staff, they only way UGA will ever play in the BCS Championship game is if they do go undefeated as I stated above, and win every game by a large margin. Everyone knows you have to have a little bit of luck along the way, too, but a couple close games where we eke out a win late won’t cut it with those losers.

RxDawg the pendulum is swinging back to UGa? What will that get the Dawgs? An SEC championship and preseason #1 Ranking but nothing more? You got to love what that UGa pendulum swing is really good for. Maybe UGa can get to the BCS game and break the SEC string of Wining a MNC. The Real SEC Elite would never let UGa in the big boy club after that.

OoltewahDawg, we have not deserved to be in a championship game since 1980. Mark May probably thinks they could have beat Georgia because Pitt did in fact beat Georgia two years later in the Herschel era.
