Fan talk: Rumors, running backs and favorite moments from Dogs’ 10-win season

Aaron Murray celebrates in the big win over Auburn. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Aaron Murray celebrates in the big win over Auburn. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

If you can tear yourself away from all the Internet rumors popping up, you ought to check out a video compilation that Georgiadogs.com has put up of all 33 of Aaron Murray’s touchdown throws from the past season. It’s tough to pick a favorite, but I think I’d have to go with that Michael Bennett catch in the Florida game.

I’ll be on vacation the next week, but before I head out let’s get to some Junkyard Mail. …

Steve Williams writes: Bill, I’ve heard it said that although Georgia had a 10-game winning streak this season and took the SEC East, the Dawgs didn’t have a single signature win because they lost to the three best teams they played. This was cited by one observer in explaining why South Carolina got the Capitol One Bowl over Georgia. I can’t really argue about us losing to the three best teams we played, but I thought the comeback in Jacksonville was a pretty “signature” moment, even if it wasn’t one of Florida’s best teams. How about you? And what was your favorite moment of this season? Mine was halftime of the SEC Championship Game. It might not have lasted, but holding the nation’s top team to no first downs was a real highlight!

The first half defensive showing against LSU was impressive, but I can’t quite bring myself to single out any aspect of that game as a “favorite” moment. The comeback against the Gators was pretty fine, though. Likewise, the latest win over the Jackets. But the season’s high point for me was the way the Dogs handled Auburn, which might not have been as good a team as last year’s but still ended up bowl-worthy. Georgia’s complete domination of the Tigers was one of the best games I’ve seen Between the Hedges in a long time. As for the lack of a signature win this season, I can live without one of those as long as at least 10 victories and a division title are part of the deal. And the Capitol One taking the Gamecocks, that’s just business. They figured USC-East would fill more seats and hotel rooms.

Jason Tweedell writes: Bill, I’ve had two people tell me today they are hearing [Isaiah] Crowell has been kicked off the football team. Do you know anything about this? Meanwhile, John Rawl writes: Bill, I’m hearing a lot of rumblings that Crowell may end up academically Ineligible and, as a result, from that and other disciplinary actions, transfer. Is there any truth to this, or is it merely speculation? And Jason Betsill asks: Can you confirm or deny that Crowell informed UGA coaches he would be transferring out? I really hope not because the SEC is a multi-back league now and we need him.

Wow, the rumor mill just never lets up on this kid, does it? To answer you all, no, I’ve heard nothing from any credible source about Crowell being suspended, having academic problems or transferring. And, like Jason, I hope there’s nothing to any of that, because Georgia will be a better team next year with Crowell than they would be without him. The fan base, already fed up with Georgia tailbacks after the past couple of years, didn’t cut Crowell much slack this season, but those folks with a bit more distance still were impressed by him. Thus, his SEC freshman of the year award and CBSSports.com naming Crowell to its freshman All-American team (which means Crowell accomplished one of his preseason goals).

Patrick Yaggy writes: I was so frustrated this week (so was Richt apparently) by everything I heard and saw from [Crowell]. I heard all different rumors which centered around the same root issue: his teammates and coaches are tired of his attitude and lack of durability. At the Dome, he was the object of the loudest boos when he limped off the field again after only a few plays. The place just went nuts in frustration. Between his personal foul penalty that negated an LSU PF penalty and his constant injuries that kept him off the field resulting in a one-dimensional (i.e., predictable) offense, I would say he was a large reason that UGA couldn’t regain any momentum.

Crowell not being a factor offensively last Saturday certainly didn’t help matters, that’s for sure. But he wasn’t the only reason the Dogs lost that game and, as I noted earlier this week, without him Georgia wouldn’t have won 10 games and wouldn’t have been back in the Dome to meet LSU.

Still on the subject of Crowell, Jonathan J. London writes: The youngun has some growing up to do. When your coach chews you out and you turn your back, that’s a pretty big show of disrespect, not just for your coach, but other guys on the team. Somebody needs to get in Crowell’s ear and make him understand that, with enough hard work, he can be a star. But if he’s not willing to put that in, he’ll never be more than average. He’s “young and dumb,” like my Dad called me at that age, so here’s to hoping he gets some learning between now and next fall — for our sake and his.

Well said.

Jeff Myers writes: Bill, the hot topic is obviously our running back position. I wanted to get your thoughts on the overall picture of the position and what has transpired over the past couple years. Do we have the right recruiting characteristics for this position?  Is the staff doing due diligence on recruit background and character issues, or do we need to improve in that area? While each RB issue has had its own reasoning behind it, none have been because of talent or ability. Do we have an in-house issue with position coach or those in support staff roles, that counsel and tutor these players? Three suspended at the RB position for drugs! There is a red flag here, I just can’t figure it out what it points to. Your thoughts?

You raise some interesting points. Running backs coach Bryan McClendon has developed a reputation as an ace recruiter, but it’s only natural that folks are beginning to question whether he’s perhaps lacking as a molder of talent or disciplinarian once that talent has signed on the dotted line. I do think perhaps the players would benefit from some tougher love. As for my overall view of the position, as I said earlier this week, I think the addition of Keith Marshall to the competition for playing time could be the best thing to happen to Crowell. On paper, I think the mix of Crowell, Marshall and the straight-ahead downhill running of Richard Samuel and Boo Malcome, when needed, looks like a upgrading of the position next year. I’d still like to see another back or two signed, though.

Scott Mabee writes: Bill, I understand that Boo was hurt at the beginning of the season and then later on quit the team. With all of that aside what are the coaches saying about him and his ability. I remember last year when they were talking about pulling his redshirt and what kind of talent he was and when he has had some playing time he seemed to run hard.

After the game against LSU, Mark Richt noted, “It wasn’t until Ken Malcome started running the ball that we had a little bit more success. He ran extremely hard. I was proud of him. I’m not saying the other guys didn’t run hard, but Kenny did run hard and showed some fight.” And Mike Bobo added: “It was good to see Ken come out and run the football like we know he can and push the pile. We’re going to see what he can do in this bowl game for sure.” Richt has said that the tailback position will be “a competitive situation throughout bowl practice time and we’ll just see who is best equipped to do it.” So I’d say things are looking up for Boo.

Pat writes: Bill, please, please, please start a campaign for Georgia to make a change in our offensive coordinator. That is the one thing that is missing from our program and from any hope of putting UGA back on the national contender list. We have seen the defense finally grow and come into its own with an ability to adjust and play a respectable game. However, the offensive strategy consistently loses focus in every game where the opponent is a major challenge. It happened again with LSU. After a brilliant strategy in the beginning of the game and having LSU totally off balance, UGA then resorts to the mundane play-calling, totally predictable and unsuccessful. I sincerely believe that UGA is on the right track with the exception of offensive leadership — where I think we are truly outclassed.

I’ve been as frustrated as anyone by Bobo’s tendency to start out hot and then go ultra-conservative, but while he calls the plays, I figure he’s following the general plan his boss wants. And as long as that’s the case we’re not going to see a change there. Frankly, I’m a lot more concerned with Georgia’s special teams play than with our offense. Special teams cost Georgia the South Carolina game, nearly cost the Dogs a couple of other games, turned the punting game from a strength to a liability (just like kickoff returns) and put LSU in a position to come back against the Dogs. “We spend a lot of time on special teams,” Les Miles said after the game at the Georgia Dome. I don’t know whether LSU spends more time on that aspect of the game than Georgia does, but they certainly are getting more out of the time they’re spending. Richt definitely needs to rethink his approach to special teams. So if I campaign for anything, it’s going to be that. Then we can worry about Bobo.

Steve Segrest writes: Hi Bill, could you talk a little about our offensive line for next year — especially some of our redshirt freshmen. Being objective, do you think there is any possibility of the OL competing well against the likes of Bama and LSU?

Under Will Friend, Georgia’s offensive line steadily improved this season despite severe depth problems. Losing Ben Jones, Cordy Glenn and Justin Anderson will hurt (well, mainly Jones and Glenn), but returnees Kenarious Gates, Chris Burnette and Dallas Lee will have plenty of experience. David Andrews, who’ll be a sophomore, likely will take over as center, and five-star recruit John Theus probably will be starting before the 2012 season is over, if not right from the beginning. Watts Dantzler will be in the mix, too. There might be a bit of a drop-off early in the season, but I think the Dogs have the makings of a decent offensive line.

Jamie Mullinax writes: I heard through one of the various recruiting sites that [Todd] Gurley and [Keith] Marshall had said they would like to play college ball together! Does landing Marshall help us or hurt with Gurley? Thanks and, as alway GO DAWGS!

If, as they’ve indicated, the two players have talked about possibly wanting to play college ball together, Marshall committing to UGA certainly ought not to hurt the Dogs’ chances with Gurley, who reportedly has narrowed his choices to Georgia and North Carolina (though Clemson is putting on a push). Let’s hope their friendship gives Georgia the edge.

Denny Jackson writes: I’ve heard a lot of speculation that a trip to Missouri might take the place of Georgia’s planned visit to Tuscaloosa on the 2012 schedule. If that’s the case, don’t you think next year’s schedule looks just about as favorable as this year’s was for the Dogs?

If Missouri really does take Bama’s place, then the 2012 schedule actually looks even more favorable to the Dogs than 2011’s was. Let’s face it, opening with Buffalo is like night and day compared with facing Boise State and more than makes up for the fact that the Dogs will have to travel to Columbia to play the Gamecocks.

We all need to understand something. With Weiss leaving FL, they are going to probably wind up with whoever it is we would like to have. Muschamp will most likely pick someone that makes him look better, than he did with Weiss. FL and UGA both have good enough names to put someone in the OC position that would liven up UGA’s offense. I hate to say this, I like Bobo, but we will never be any better than we were this year, with Murray as the QB and Bobo as the OC. Bobo does not yet realize that Murray can’t hit anything over 30 yards downfield. To prove that point, rewatch the CG and count how manytimes Bobo called for Murray to throw the ball over 30 yards downfield. I still say, someone needs to take Murray skeet shooting, so he can figure out how to lead a man with enough distance downfield so that the player runs under the ball, as a skeet flies into the gunshot. Under 30 yards, good. Over 30 yards, start screaming at Bobo and Murray before the ball lands . . . . on the ground.

I am encouraged with the addition of Keith Marshall to the fold of Georgia’s backfield.II think that he will be a stabilizer for Crowell. He comes from a good family….Side Bar….Those who think that one player did not get into our players psych prior to half time and shortly afterwards, are only fooling themselves. Matthiu(sp) did just that. Coupled with the dropped passes and dropped interception(deep in LSU territory) really affected our quarterback and affected our offensive coordinator, Bobo and our team’s confidence as a whole. I knew that he(Bobo) would go in the protect mode and continue attempt to have our offense run to the right( with little or no success)and would have Murray to drop back deep in the pocket for pass plays instead of quick release type passes. LSU rushers loved that. Both ;yielded, three and outs repeatedly and a quick return of our defense back on the field. This strategy resulted in a very tired defensive team and the results were predictably followed against a very good team.. Our team and coaches looked bad emotionally from the half on.. One player got to us. Will we(our players and coaches) be emotionally tough enough in our bowl game and continue on into next season? This Dawg for life, hopes so. Go Dawgsssss!

Bill,
Crowell is a prime example of why coaches redshirt players.
Crowell was promised if he chose UGA he would play as a freshman.
UGA may have been the only school to offer him this opportunity.
Coach MR kept his word but if he don’t make this promise to Crowell he probably ends up playing against us for 3 years.
Crowell knows how to run the football Bill, he don’t seem to have the respect and responsibility that some kids do at 18 years of age but, there you go back to the redshirt, that would have afforded Crowell a year to grow up and maybe learn some respect and some strength ad conditioning.
Lots of weight put on this young mans shoulders this season and hopefully with some hard work this coming season Crowell will be greatly improved on and off the field.

I simply love the DAWGS and so proud of their accomplishments this year and excited about the future!! I abhor the nay-sayers who know nothing about what it takes to build a team! The DAWGS are a “Storied Program”! They are champions and certainly take their turn in claiming championships. They can’t win’em all and neither can Alabama, LSU, Florida and for goodness sake look at Tennessee! The fans in Tennessee are calling for Dooley’s head and he’s only had one recruiting class to his credit. 45 freshmen on the Tennessee team and 35 sophomores, hardly any Jr’s and Sr’s. Almost no talent from the State of Tennessee, they must rely on recruiting everywhere else. Still, the single short-legged fans bearing a single tooth are calling for Dooley’s head! You wonder what turnip truck they fell off of! It takes time to build a team and you’re mighty lucky when you can land a lot of 5 and 4 star players. UGA is building and beginning to get a few 5 & 4 star players. You know how many Tennessee has? 2….Tyler Bray and D’Arick Rogers!

I’m proud of Coach Richt and Coach Grantham and I’m so excited about the 2012 season! It should be a dandy! We’ll know a lot after they play South Carolina!! Don’t you know the DAWGS will be chomping at the bits for them in Columbia???? Hunker down and cage Lattimore. With a strong running attack they will have, it should be sweet!! GO DAWGS!!!!!!

This season has been saluted as the great turn around for Coach Richt and the Dogs, Sadly it was anything but that, Call it the perfect storm, Fla, Aub, and Tenn all had the weakest teams in years and all at the same time, Then Georgia was able to avoid playing the three strongest teams in the SEC west in the regular season, Those being LSU, Ala and Arkansas thus Georgia won its division more by default than by any sort of turn around, Reality quickly set in during the second half at the Dome, LSU showed the world just how weak the Dogs and the SEC east really were, Coach Richt will now get his contract extended but has anything really changed?

Think about it, how many Freshman actually contributed this year. Crowell played and played well for a true freshman. What happened to the other Freshman? Probably, they just weren’t ready for the SEC. Also, when you have ultra talented people in your business or on your team, they have different temperments and have to be handled differently. The coaches know this.

The recruiting blog keeps eating my posts. I wish someone would copy and paste this under the Dillon Lee article:

Dillon, this is what you can expect at Alabama. If you want anything to do with someone like this I say have at it.

According to former NFL fullback and current NFL Network analyst Heath Evans, the worst example of Saban’s impersonal approach happened in 2005, when he actually stepped over a convulsing player after a practice. Evans relayed the story on Miami’s 790 The Ticket on Tuesday.

Well, the first day of two-a-days. We had about a three-hour-plus practice in the morning in that south Florida sun. You guys know what it’s like down there in late July, early August. And then that night we had another practice under the lights, if I recall I think it was about from 6 to 9.

Jeno James, our best offensive lineman at the time, comes in and collapses after practice, uh, vomiting all kinds of stuff that would make a billygoat puke, eyes rolled in the back of his head. Myself, about four other lineman are trying to carry him from the locker room, to the training room.

Obviously it’s a moment of panic, everyone, you know, we don’t know if this guy’s, you know, gonna die, I mean, the whole deal. But he’s so big and sweaty and heavy that we actually have to set him down in the hallway between the locker room and the training room.

Nick Saban literally just starts walking in, steps over Jeno James convulsing, doesn’t say a word, doesn’t try to help, goes upstairs, I don’t know what he does. But then obviously they get Jeno ‘trauma-offed’ to the hospital.

Saban calls a team meeting about 10:30 that night, comes down and says, ‘You know, the captain of the ship can never show fear or indecision, we’ve always gotta have an answer, and so I had to go upstairs, that’s why I walked over Geno like that, I had to collect my thoughts and decide what’s best for our team.’

And I’m thinking to myself, I think along with Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas and Yeremiah Bell and all these other guys going, ‘Did he, does he really believe what he’s just saying?’ He showed no human emotion for one of his best players.

SSI Gator – you’re coaches are bailing out – your recruits are decommiting – you lost how many games year last year? You lost MORE this year? Yeah, we’re real worried about going from 6-7 to 10-3 and a share of the SEC title. Your mighty leather bags are going in the OTHER direction there , bud. Your coach calls his team “SOFT”. Um, doesn’t the coach have something to do with that? Yep – Florida signed what the talking heads were calling the greatest recruiting class in college history just two years ago – I guess something just happens to them when they get to Gainsville! Isn’t that what everyone was saying about our “dream team” before the start of this season? CMR will have them coached up? No, he will have his extension and he doesn’t have to worry about winning football games. Ten more years of mediocre football! No what I complain about is people trumpeting our great “10-win” season, when they we wins over weak teams. Richt will (I am sure) get his extension based upon his great “10-win” season. Some of you guys may refer to me and others as “haters” but we are not, we are “lovers”. We love our Bulldawgs and want to see them win. That means we ant the best head coach for our football players. We just don’t think that HC is Mark Richt.

@ notgoodnews I hope you are wrong but I wouldn’t be surprised, Mason has a much better touch with his passes than Murray, He does not throw the ball as hard as Murray but is accurate with both short and long passes, Too bad Bobo or Richt will not play him more, Seems Richt has a difficult time changing his mind once a decision has been made be it good or bad.

I’ve never been anti-Bobo. He’s just doing what CMR wants. Richt’s biggest flaw on offense is he doesn’t really believe in a power running game. Thus his reluctance to play Malcombe and his constant recruiting of scatbacks. UGA has always been most effective when running from the power I and using play-action. Alas, CMR doesn’t see it that way.

Thoughts on the above article:

Can’t disagree about the lack of a signature win, unless you keep in mind that a “weak” sec east is still better than most conferences. And speaking of sig. wins, where is Bama’s? Arkansas? I guess. But look at the rest… you do know they share SIX common opponents with UGA and both teams won all, including tromping Auburn by a wider margin. The rest for Bama were weaklings and a mediocre Penn State. And don’t tell me about “what-ifs” and only losing by 3 to LSU unless you give the Dawgs the same credit vs. Carolina.

RB situation – I hope all goes well for Crowell for his sake and the team needs him. But, you can’t let any player get away with the lack of respect issue. “Love” them all, but at the end of the day it is a priviledge to be a feature back at UGA in the heart of the SEC and you need to want it. Where was Ken Malcome earlier vs. LSU?? That looked like a no-brainer instead of running the little guys into the teeth of LSU’s D-line.

Bobo – Seems good one series/quarter, but then “what the hell are you thinking” the next. Richt just needs to have more input on his game plan. Some pages should be taken out of the playbook and shredded, and erased from memory. Look at film and it should become obvious.

Overall, there are problems to solve, but you win in the SEC by solid D and strong running game. We have one and should have the other by the beginning of next season. Go Dawgs!

Expect to be booed if you do not perform as advertised. We believe schools are judged by their football teams, not by the quality of lawyers, pharmacists, and veterinarians they produce. We pay good money for tickets and we expect results.

Richard Samuel is big, fast and strong but even though he was rated a 5 star RB out of high school he is not a natural RB. He was considered to be better at LB but was needed by the team to play
RB. Next year I expect big things from him.

Spurrier, Saban & Meyer have one thing in common. They abandoned the players they recruited, quit the team and moved on for more money Mark Richt is loyal to his players, his coaches and UGA. Recruits should realize that most big time coaches are all about what’s in it for them. If you want to play for the coach that you signed with go to Georgia.

Old Dog – be careful what you wish for. Tennessee fired Phil Fulmer, who was at a similar winning percentage as Richt. They got Lane Kiffin who got them into a world of trouble, then left. Now they have Derek Dooley and look at what happened. They’ll be back eventually, but is that what you want for Georgia? A 5-7 season, losing to Kentucky and sitting at home for bowl season? Who is it exactly that you think we can get that will do better? And don’t bother throwing out names that are an impossibility.
