Fan talk: Looking at Georgia-LSU from both sides

big bulldog head logoEarlier this week a Bulldog friend of mine who lives in Baton Rouge reported that Tiger fandom was sounding a bit cocky about Saturday’s game with Georgia. But wanting to introduce some genuine Cajun flavor into the proceedings, I went to my favorite LSU fan, Louis Mayeux, for his view of the SEC Championship.

“While I’m confident that my LSU Tigers will beat Georgia in the SEC Championship game Saturday,” he said, “one memorable bit of history reminds me that nothing is certain in college football. In the 2001 SEC Championship, an 8-3 LSU team found itself in the same underdog’s role as Georgia this year, with No. 2 Tennessee in LSU’s present overwhelming favorite’s spot. The Volunteers were expected to win handily and head to the BCS championship game. But rising young coach Nick Saban’s Tigers upset Philip Fulmer’s Vols. The memory of that great win, which marked the beginning of LSU’s recent rise to college football prominence, should keep Tiger fans from overconfidence.”

Of course, Louis said, “LSU defensive coach John Chavis, who had that same role with Tennessee in 2001, is probably telling his great defense about that game as a cautionary tale.”

Noting that Chavis has been telling folks all year that his Tigers — led by Mo Claiborne, Tyrann Matheiu, Sam Montgomery and sleek sack master Barkevious Mingo — are the most talented group he’s ever had, Louis declared: “I’ve been watching LSU football since about 1957, and this is the best team I’ve ever seen.”

Having already beaten nationally ranked Oregon, West Virginia, Alabama and Arkansas, wins over the Dogs in Atlanta and in the BCS game would see this Tiger team finish 14-0 and lay claim to being among the all-time best college teams ever.

But, Louis allowed, “although LSU has tremendous depth, size and speed, Georgia is a ‘quality opponent,’ as LSU coach Les Miles would say. The Dawgs have a shot if they can get something close to the running attack that Alabama produced against the Tigers in a 9-6 loss. Trent Richardson broke loose for some strong gains for the Crimson Tide in that game, and if Georgia freshman running back Isaiah Crowell has a strong performance, Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray will feel less pressure passing. Murray appears more dependable than the Tide’s A.J. McCarron. Georgia looks to have more offensive balance than Alabama and Arkansas. But to have a chance at winning, Georgia must do an adequate job protecting Murray and avoid turnovers.”

LSU Tigers logoNo argument there. And I really can’t dispute Louis’ assessment that “LSU looks to have a big edge, with its ball-hawking, big-play defense” and that the Tigers’ depth at running back and offensive line “will be a big challenge for the fine Georgia defensive line.”

As for Jordan Jefferson, now solidly established as the No. 1 LSU quarterback, Louis noted he “has greatly improved as a passer, but could get flustered into making mistakes if Georgia can get a strong pass rush. Jefferson’s running ability is an added challenge for the Dogs.”

And, he noted, LSU also boasts special-team strength, an area that tends to either be a strength or a disaster for Georgia.

Louis doesn’t think predictions that LSU will get a place in the BCS title game no matter what happens Saturday will impact his team’s play against Georgia. “I expect the Tigers to bring their best effort,” he said. “This team is too competitive and deep not to.”

Louis’ take on the game is pretty reasonable. Of course, these are college kids we’re talking about so anything can happen. But let’s be honest: If Georgia wins this game, it will be the biggest upset of the year.

That said, I think Mark Richt’s Dogs are fully capable of winning this game if they play up to their full potential. But in order for that to happen the defense must control the No. 1-ranked Tigers’ run game and force Jefferson to go to the air under pressure. Georgia can’t afford any turnovers (that’s frequently how LSU starts one of its quick scoring spurts) and the Dogs must win the takeaway battle. Offensively, Mike Bobo has to call probably the best game of his career (he’s shown recently against Auburn and Georgia Tech that he has it in him), the line must somehow keep Murray on his feet, and Georgia’s QB has to be on target against LSU’s sticky-fingered secondary. He won’t get away with any ill-advised throws against this group.

In other words, it’s going to take a nearly perfect day for UGA and probably even then a bit of luck or some sort of meltdown on LSU’s part. But that sort of turn of events isn’t a rarity in college football.

If it somehow happens at the Georgia Dome Saturday, there’s no doubt we’ll be calling this a game for the ages.

With that, let’s let some more Dawg fans in on the discussion via the Junkyard Mail. …

Rontavius Smith writes: Hey Bill, I personally believe that my Dawgs have more than a fighting chance. It just seems to me that since the media says UGA has no chance, everyone just follows that direction. What’s your take on it? Do you think that all the disrespect to the UGA team will be used by the players to propel them past LSU and throw the world into shock?

I’ve been extremely impressed with what I’ve seen of LSU this season so I don’t think you can write the consensus expectation of a Tiger win off to media hype. Like I said above, though, the Dogs certainly are capable of pulling it off. Would that be enough to win them the respect they crave? Probably not. I’m not even sure a win over LSU would get Georgia into the Top 10 of the polls at this point.

Andrew Smith writes: Hey Bill, a wise man once told me a football game hinges on two things. Can you run the ball? Can you stop the run? I think the LSU game will be no different. If we can control the line of scrimmage then we will be more balanced and most likely not turn it over. I’m not that concerned with LSU’s offense but more with how they have forced turnovers and made teams one-dimensional on offense. How about you? Do you think our O-line will show up for the entire game or be hit or miss like other games during this season?

I think your wise man is on the mark. The question is, even if our O-line plays its best, will it be enough against LSU’s terrific pass rush?

dchesh45 writes: I think it’s going to come down to the Dawgs’ offense. I think their D will make plays and keep the Dawgs in the game. However, if the O can’t capitalize, the Tigers will wear them down. Special teams will also be clutch. [Blair] Walsh and [Drew] Butler have to be relaxed and need to just forget about the regular season. If the D shows up, Murray plays like he’s been, and Crowell/Thomas/Harton/Malcome provide some sort of run game to keep us from being one-dimensional, the Dawgs have a legit chance of the unthinkable. Let’s get out there and GATA Dawgs!!! Sic em!

Woof!

Jeff Myers writes: A UGA win will include our best special teams game of the season. Not just punting and field goal kicking, but coverage teams as well. Our defense must continue its formula for success. We may not shut down the run, but we must stop it enough to force long passing downs. Look for LSU to pound the ball, like they have all year, to tire UGA out. Our offense must be patient, and creative. Bobo had some great play calls against Tech, and a similar plan will be needed. Also, LSU will stuff our run game at times, and we can not get frustrated, we have to run and run creatively. And [Georgia must] win the turnover battle. This will be the best team we have played this year, they will make plays, and we may face adversity. The team must stay positive, and play with the heart of an SEC champion.

That’s actually the one thing that makes me most optimistic, Jeff. This has been Richt’s most resilient team and they’ve shown a lot of heart this season.

Keith Miller writes: Bill, I love the blog. I have a question that I’d love for all SEC fans to think about. First I’d like to say I love my Dawgs. Next I think LSU and Bama have been the best we have this year. But Bama lost, just like South Carolina. Why do we have a SEC championship game? To have a clear “best of the SEC.” We all say, coaches and fans alike, “we want to win the SEC, that’s our biggest goal.” Have we let the BCS nullify our champion? … How can we send any team that didn’t win its division and conference to represent us in a title game? I hated that our Dawgs didn’t go in ’07, but if they had played better early on … well we all know. My point is this: Champions are made of hard work and luck, and most of all a will to win in the games that matter most. What game is bigger than the SEC championship game? GO DAWGS, beat LSU!!

It’s a quirky system that doesn’t always see the best two teams in the BCS championship game, but think of it this way: If Georgia somehow wins, the SEC will probably get three teams into the BCS bowls — the Dawgs in the Sugar and LSU and Bama in the title game. From a conference standpoint, that would be pretty awesome.

Finally, Paula Bechtler writes: Hi Bill! I assume the Dawg Walk will take place Saturday inside the SEC Fan Fest at the Georgia World Congress Center — is that right? Do you know what time? Go Dawgs!

I put the question to UGA sports info guru Claude Felton, who reports: “No Dawg Walk this week, I’m afraid. Due to team entry locations, security and logistical issues, SEC guidelines do not provide for any special walks for either participating team.” However, pep rallies for fans of both schools are planned between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the SEC FanFare in the Georgia World Congress Center. Admission to the FanFare (which runs 1-6 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday) costs $10 for adults. Kids under age 12 can get in free on Friday and for $5 Saturday. By the way, gates to the Georgia Dome open at 2 p.m. Saturday. Also Saturday, Scott Woerner continues his string of public appearances promoting the “1980 Dawgs” DVD set. He’ll be greeting fans and signing autographs across from Centennial Olympic Park at the corner of Marietta Street and Centennial Olympic Park Drive from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The one thing that nobody is talking about that will be a very intriguing matchup in my opinion is the second half adjustments. LSU has broken away from teams time and time again in the second half, while Grantham has consistently shown that he makes great halftime adjustments. Everyone knows how important the first 5 minutes of the second half are, and I trust Grantham to keep us in the game. Either way, this is one hell of a Georgia football team. Go Dawgs!

Excellent point. One positive in Georgia’s favor as opposed to other LSU opponents is the Georgia defenses has been getting stronger and stingier in the second half. Of course they haven’t yet been pounded as LSU will do. I see it as vital that the Dawgs keep the offensive Mo in the first half and hog the ball

Speaking of cautionary tales, wouldn’t the Tigers coaching staff be well advised to include their own failure in the 2005 title game vs. UGA? I think they were supposed to win that one as well.

On Dawgs 24/7, the Crowell situation was discussed. Reports are that there was an incident in the weight room where he would not work out and some of the upperclassmen offered him a free attitude adjustment.

Forget Crowell, the key to this game is giving the ball to Malcolm 25 to 30 times and let him pound their defensive line. At 225 pounds that should losen them up for some throwing to our wideouts. What he can’t do is fumble.

In 2005, it’s #13 UGA(9-2) vs #4 LSU(10-1),

But this year, it’s #14 UGA(9-2) vs #1 LSU(11-0).

The odds are much higher in 2005 than this year.

Our Defense will do us proud…………………But we can’t block. We couldn’t drive a undersized Tech defensive front out of the way for yardage and Murray won’t have time to check off receivers. LSU man’s up at at the line with their DB’s and hits WR’s and buys that defensive front and LB’s that extra step to rush. I have watched our line pass block. They don’t hold blocks and do a lot of shoulder bumps..Bobo will need to get the ball out of Murray’s hands quickly. Maybe the TE’s, Charles and White, who are both hard to cover, can help. And as far as Crowell, I’m just not counting on him to man up……

I agree with what most every writer says, it’s not their offense that worries me, it’s their defense. We cannot afford forced turnovers. If Murray has time to throw, is at his most accurate and makes good decisions, we’ve got a real shot at a huge upset. As long as our special teams don’t blow it.

They have an impressive W-L record, nothing more, nothing less. This LSU team is not the greatest in College football history. They are only an undefeated team that somewhere along the line will be defeated. It just as well be Saturday in the Dome.

If I.C. shows up in a series, they’re gonna ring his bell and get him gone. They have seen the film, folks! I think the dawgs D matches up well w/LSU’s come right at you offense. It’s when Jefferson pulls the ball down and takes off can UGA get to him before he gets loose. It’ll be the biggest teat for the dawgs D this season and they will need a lot of help from Bobo and the dawgs O. That is where LSU has the edge based on their performances this season and GA’s inconsistency at running the ball and at times in the passing game. If GA can somehow make LSU respect the run then GA has its best chance if AM and receivers give an AU game like performance which was their shining performance to date. Lets not forget about LSU’s special teams. They’re outstanding especially on KO and punt returns. If GA’s D and O are clicking it may come down to special teams play as the difference in this game. Bottom line, GA needs its best all around game of the century to beat a truely good LSU team.

I’m sorry but I just don’t see this as quite the insurmountable challenge as some others. Its a college football game just like any other. If we make the kind of dumb mistakes that we’ve been known to make in the not so distant past this will be a blowout. If not, it will be a good game. They are talented and so are we. If we play with stones they won’t be able to just physically bully us like they have done most of the teams they’ve played. We aren’t Oregon, Arkansas, or West Virginia. Those teams do a great job with what they have but we have a lot more.

I think Richt needs to pull a “Hoosiers” and measure the goal posts or something like Gene Hackman did in that movie. People act like we’re playing the freaking Green Bay Packers. Good grief. LSU is a great team and they will probably win, but we can hang with them. This isn’t impossible. It can be done and crazier things have happened in college football.

Thanks.

We gotta have running figured PROMINENTLY, and you can’t plan on I.C. with LSU’s defense….period! “The Dawgs have a shot if they can get something close to the running attack that Alabama produced against the Tigers in a 9-6 loss”
************************************************
What, 96 yds is a “running attack?”

The whole thing on offense depends on whether Bobo/Richt show Chavis some new stuff. He’s had our number for quite a while.

If we start hurting LSU with short passes to our tight ends, then we may run the ball some with success – between the tackles because LSU is too fast to go outside – ask Bama.

The key to Georgia having a chance will be sustaining drives. LSU is a defense that has been real consistent all year. They have not had any real spectacular games like Georgia with many negative rushing yards. However, they consistently give up around 85-100. They only give up about 150-200 passing yards. They give up some yardage, but not a whole lot. They make their living off of forcing turnovers, and keeping people out of the end zone. they have a little bend, but they never break. Their offense is big and strong, and since Jefferson is back, they don’t throw much. They don’t worry about scoring. They just beat you in the ground and wear you down, so they can take over late in the game. If Georgia can sustain drives and keep the defense off of the field as much as possible, we will be able to hang with them. LSU also does a lot of damage with a short field, so Drew Butler could come up big. Another plus for Georgia is that we will be the first team that LSU has played that has multiple big physical receivers that like to take the ball, instead of catching it in space. This could be a game of rock em sock em robots, and the winner will be the last one standing.

LSU does have a great team this year (the best ever imo), and they are correctly favored over our Dawgs, but one thing I have learned from reading these blogs–predictions are a waste of server memory; you are getting into God’s business there. It is hard to add to what has been said, except that Murray is a real key for me. If he is on, as he usually is, and we can protect him, I think we score a lot of points. If he gets consistently pounded, hurried, or he is injured, it could get ugly. The one thing that hasn’t been talked about much is who rises to the occasion in the big game. This is the kind of game that can bring a whole new level of play out of some players, so we will see how they respond. There is a point where a Walker or a Tebow becomes a legend, and games like tomorrow’s are often the catalyst. So we will see who steps up and who doesn’t–be they Dawgs or Tigers. Go Dawgs.

CHDawg

One other point about Crowell. The Dawgs can play well with or without him. If he is healthy and ready, then obviously we are better. The problem is the distraction of everybody talking about his attitude and availability. There are a lot of great athletes on UGA and giving Crowell 30% of the press is distracting. Let him fade into the background and we will see what he can do. I don’t care if he loafs on his windsprints. That is something for the staff and team to work on–if he can go out and do his job while running hard and not fumbling, then he has time to work on being perfect everywhere else. If he has a bad attitude and it shows up tomorrow on the field, then let’s get some of the other TBs in there. Bottom line is the attention distracts–let the team and staff deal with it.

They are extremely physical. It’s their bread and butter. Live by physicality, die by physicality. It is just as tiring to run all over the field hitting people as it is to be hit. My point here is, they can be worn down also. The question is can we man up? I think so. We have depth enough to go with this team for 4 quarters. Keeping our offense on the field wears that defense down. Be patient, let the offensive opportunities develop but don’t shy away from a big play opp

At best, Mark Richt has proven himself to be an underachiever. Kirby Smart will one day go to be HC at a University and provide them with multiple national championships, while Mark Richt will grow complacent after the smoke clears, and provide a passable effort at best that includes zero national championships. That ship sailed when Stafford and Moreno left town after falling victim to our coaches poor decisions. And let’s not forget our spurning of Cam Newton. Richt and Bobo determined that he would never be a capable quarterback, and passed on him.
Of course Richt rose to the occasion with his job on the line. The talent has always been here, and he is a capable coach…when the notion takes him. Don’t let the warm fuzzies this underachiever has given us prevent us from acquiring a workaholic coach intent on continued success, and an actual challenge to Nick Saban, which Richt will never be. He’s a good man and I wish him well wherever he goes, as long as he goes.

Throw the ball. I read that UGA averages 71 plays per game. We should toss it 45 times. That is the only way to open up the running game. Quick scores will keep our D on the field. LSU offense is not a quick strike. They run up the score with defense scoring off turnovers and special teams. It may sound odd, but we need to keep there defense on the sideline.

Crowell can’t handle the defenese he’s seen to date; no way he even attempts to hold up against LSU. Murray will be running for his life, I’m afraid. “LSU isn’t the greatest team in college football history. They are beatable and will be beaten at some point. It just as well be here and now. They are not invincible.”

I think any reasonable Tiger fan would acknowledge that we are not invincible. The Dawgs are very capable of winning. Yet if LSU plays like it has then the Tigers will win hands down. LSU is just that good.

I think any fan base would be confident if their team was 12-0. There have been many Dawg fans on the blogs this week just as confident in many posts as we are. I think that’s just human nature.

If the Tigers somehow win the next 2 games it’s arguable that LSU may not be one of the greatest teams of all time. However there would be no disputing with the schedule and off the field issues, this would be one of the great seasons by any college team.

That said, LSU has to win tomorrow first and that is not a given. Contrary to what some UGA fans have posted, I would be very surprised if LSU is not ready to play tomorrow. This team is hungry and doubt they think they can win this game by not playing at an exceptional level.

I expect it to be a close game.

Your guys are good and it is an exceptional team. Most UGA fans will give you all the kudos in the world. You’ve earned them. Few outside the state of Georgia believe the Bulldogs have a chance. We’ve been here before, LSU and UGA. We think we have more than a shot of knocking you guys off. Georgia expects a hard fought slugfest. We’re up for it. Cuz is 100% right, depending on a single player is a trip to nowhere. I very skeptical that the offensive line can control the line of scrimmage against LSU. There’s a very slim chance of winning this one, LSU is much better this year than in 2005.

Regardless, it’s still better than being South Carolina. Their constant whining about losing the East reminds me of those horns during the World Cup…annoying.

Anyone else tired of people saying we don’t have a chance? The old saying says “You can’t win if you don’t play”. It is pretty obvious that every time you step on the field, you have a chance. Look at what happened in the Big House a few years ago. Appalachian State had worse odds than we do, and they came out with a victory. Just look around and you can find hundreds if not thousands of example of where the underdog came out on top. This is the single reason why the game is physically played, and not played on xbox or paper. The only element that cannot be predicted is the human element. by the way it is humans that play the game. LSU could easily blow us out, or we could blow them out. To say though that we have no chance is at its best ignorant. I mean even Vegas is giving us a 20% chance at an upset.

Let me correct you real quick on your point on the coliseum. First it was slaves and criminals that went to competition in the coliseum. Also they could earn their freedom. Christians did not compete, they were massacred. They were given the death sentence for public execution in the coliseum by many different styles, but never did they compete. It is not even reasonable to make a comment comparing executions to competition.

This team is very young and will continue to grow and get better over the next 2-3 years but the 2011 Georgia Bulldogs will make all true fans proud.”

Yes-I saved it. I was that sure even then.

“It’s a quirky system that doesn’t always see the best two teams in the BCS championship game, but think of it this way: If Georgia somehow wins, the SEC will probably get three teams into the BCS bowls — the Dawgs in the Sugar and LSU and Bama in the title game. From a conference standpoint, that would be pretty awesome.”

It’s far worse than a “quirky system” if LSU loses and still plays for a mythical “National Championship”. If LSU loses and the SEC places three teams in the BCS only for that reason the backlash against the BCS and SEC will be terrible. The responsible thing for the league to do would be to restrict BCS participation to the SEC Champion and one other team.

From my perspective the BCS and its “National Championship” game is already a bad joke deserving no repetition. The BCS games should not pit teams from the same Conference against each other. Under the current system, at the end of the year the BCS Conference Champions and any at-large invitees should be seeded into the BCS Bowls. It escapes me how even this would be better than the old Bowl system.

History has even proven you can go undefeated and still not play for the NC. Its absurd to think a 10 win season is mediocrity in your books. Damn son!! If you understood football…it takes more than just a successful season to guarantee a NC spot! The rules of the BCS game are constantly changing..and its sickening that ESPN and reporters are already justifying a team can lose and still make it to the NC game. They change the rules of engagement in favor of what the nation wants to see. Its already takes enough energy to ward of the negativity of rival fans…but even worse when you have a cancer with your own fanclub you have to contend with as well. Therefore, all of you fairweather dawgfans are no better that Ealey and Co. who quit the team!! and you know the old proverbial saying…quitters never win!! Georgia is playing in the SEC Championship against the best team in the nation and your team will be watching it on tv. The most amusing are the gaytor and trade school whinebags talking smack. There is nothing at all in any way that points to either of your teams getting any better or winning more next year. Everyone knows that we beat South Carolina but lost the game because of turnover’s that went for scores . Even Spurrier admitted as much and said they were lucky with getting big play’s all day. If you look at the replay we most definitely out played them. Same thing with the LSU and Alabama game. Alabama out played LSU and should have won the game. They stayed in LSU territory all day. They just couldn’t kick a field goal.
Bottom line is LSU is beatable. They are a very good team but Georgia can beat them if we don’t turn the ball over and if we are patient. We have got to take advantage of the scoring opportunities when they come and Walsh has got to kick like he did his first three years. Bobo has got to accept that this may be a low scoring game and Murray doesn’t need to force any passes . Their defensive back’s are just too good . Murray need’s to play smart.

I think your idea is even crazier than the BCS. What if the dawg wins this weekend by accident (accidents happen all the time)? you would put dawg in NC?

I think a big key is Jenkins/Geathers play in the middle. If they can clog up the middle to let the LB’s get after the running game and QB then we may have a shot. Gotta get Jefferson in passing downs that way LSU is not allowed to take advantage of our aggressive DB’s. You get in short yardage 3rd downs and the running attack for LSU will crush us and it opens up play action and roll outs for Jefferson. It all starts in the middle.

The UGA defense amps up in the 2nd half. Bobo has to find a way to soften up that LSU front. Pounding it with the big FBs is an idea. More totes by the FB than the RBs. Once every 10 years? Bet when this team was going 8-4 or worse under the end of Dooley’s tenure, all of Ray Goff’s and all of Jim Donnan’s you couldn’t even fathom a championship once every 10 years. It wasn’t even within a sniff. CMR has made the team competetive in the toughest conference in college football and that in itself always gives you a shot. Once every 10 years though is kinda lofty considering where they came from. Saban went to Bama which, well, it’s Bama so any good coach who can recruit will win there. Miles took over LSU after Saban left which was left in really good shape. Meyer took over for Ron Zook who couldn’t coach but he could recruit like a mad man (he brought in Tim Tebow), and Chizik got sCam Newton. Little different situation at UGA coming in after Donnan and Goff and rebuilding a program from the ground up. One without a storied history at that.

Now, if CMR does leave, whoever comes in after him will come in with a great recruiting situation already and a load of talent.

It is being inconsistent that Bama fell no father than 2 spots after being beaten. It isn’t supposed to matter, the margin of victory, in regulation or in overtime or beaten by #1. Just by virtue of the fact that the LSU/Bama game has been played. Now, with that said, if that game had been played earlier in the year and Bama climbed back into it then, yeah, maybe that could happen.

I am an SEC homer and I believe Bama is better than the other remaining teams that “should” still have a shot. Oregon, Stanford, Okie St. Those teams at this juncture should have a better opportunity than Bama. They haven’t played #1.

The other offside of this is, if Bama wins the second game, it’s only 1-1, Are they Co-champs?

I understand anything can happen and there is a chance UGA can win, but enough with the “Georgia matches up well” and the “The same thing happened under similar circumstances in ‘05″ talk. This LSU team is MUCH better than that team, and this UGA isn’t as good as that UGA team. I watch alot of football and have nothing against UGA, but they have shown me nothing this season to make me think they match up with LSU. What is UGA’s best win? Georgia Tech? Auburn? Florida? The fact of the matter is UGA lost to the two best teams they played, and beat up on weak East division, while not playing ALA, LSU, or ARK out of the west. I have a feeling a serious reality check is coming tomorrow. Can UGA win? Of course, anything can happen. Howevrer, don’t give UGA more than a 5% chance, and spare me the UGA matches up well. If they did, this would be a battle of undefeated teams. Also, enough with the if this happens, and if that happens stuff. If you’re relying on six or seven things to break your way to win, I think that sums up your chances.

There have been a few LSU fans (not counting the posers) calling for a 25-30+ point margin. I don’t see it happening. It’s late in the year and anything can and does happen. LSU will likely find a UGA defense as stout and stingy as Bama with an offense with more weapons than Bama’s. LSU might very well win (and should) but, they’ll have to earn it. Georgia isn’t going to give it to them.

Dawgs haven’t beaten a good defense and haven’t stopped a good offense this year or last. That means Murray isn’t as good as he appears and it means the D isn’t as good as IT appears. Add to that a patchwork running back situation and iffy special teams and it adds up to disaster. If LSU comes to play, it’s not gonna be pretty.

Everybody knows that we have to come out strong and stay strong on both sides of the ball for the whole game if we’re going to beat LSU. This is going to be the ultimate test for this young Dawgs team. If our defense can force a couple of turnovers and the special teams can put a few points on the board and keep us in good field position, we just might come out on top. The way LSU overcame being down 14 — 0 and came back to put a sound whipping on Arkansas, and held Bama to 6 points in Tuscaloosa can’t be overlooked. They are a powerful bunch, but so are we. As a Gator fan who has seen both LSU and Georgia up close and personal, about the only positive thing I can say is, at least Iowa State, Baylor and USC make a good case for playing the game to see how it turns out.

However, my guess is 40-something to 10, LSU.

The big problem with LSU this year is that they basically have 44 starters. They rotate their twos in continuously the whole game, which is why the few teams (except Alabama) that have looked competitive against them in the first quarter end up getting blown out in the second half. Even if your ones match up well, they can’t help but get worn down by LSU’s depth.

The Bailey brothers’ story is similar to the Manning story with Eli and Peyton. The Bailey brother’s include three members too, although in both situations their oldest brothers career was cut short due to a injuries. The older Bailey brother, Ron, was a 2 year starting cornerback at the University of Georgia (same college that all Bailey brothers played at). He also played for NFL Europe representing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Unfortunately Ron’s career ended with a serious foot injury. Ron Bailey has been given credit by both Boss and Champ for his dedication and strong work ethic, Champ has explained several times about how Ron’s guidance has been very influential to his own success, Ron set the tone for the rest of the family. Elaine Bailey (Mom) explained that Ron always talked about getting to the “next level”, whether it was sports, education or career, which she said inspired Champ and Boss to achieve. The three brothers are well respected in Folkston,

Hard to say, The Dogs have speed on defense, Huge d-line and speedy LB’s, The Dog offense can be potent if Murray is on, Good young receivers who can take it to the house, One thing we will know after the game, If the SEC east was as weak as everyone sid it was.

I’ve seen both LSU and the Dogs play this year. But really, why would anyone say, after Georgia’s 0-2 start against the best two teams they faced, and then a 10-0 run against cupcakes(and add to that, that Auburn and Florida are bad this year), that Georgia has a great chance? Not this year, and Richt for 3.2 mil annually in reality has yet to do anything approaching great that would warrant keeping him around forever for his recent achievements over the past four years including this one. On the other hand just any warm body replacement could do worse, as McGarity has noted, citing Tennessee and other examples. Petersen replacing Hawkins at Boise does show drastic improvement can occur. Sadly, Boise situations are more the exceptions than the rule. I’m willing to give Richt credit when its due. After the LSU beatdown, if he beats a relevant bowl opponent ranked higher than Georgia, and wins the SEC next year, then I would be a believer in Richt. If the latter can’t happen next year I doubt it will happen again for Richt or for a “poor” repacement in the short term. Georgia’s recent search committees over the past two decades have definitely not held a candle to Florida’s, Auburn’s, Alabama’s or LSU’s which all have had a national title to result. Maybe Georgia hires what they hire because medocrity is acceptable and they don’t have the acumen to recognize a coach who can get the national title in reality.

For the moment though, today’s the day to put all that aside. Our University of Georgia Football Team, and our coaches, and our players are playing on the Big Stage, and playing for the Big Prize.

The heck with LSU’s “NFL team.” The heck with their depth. The heck with their “invincible” status. Fact is, Alabama’s errors, and Arkansas’s mistakes allowed LSU into this game.

The heck with the mythical, make believe, manipulated BCS title. If we didn’t already know it, we do now: The BCS has been exposed as a fraud.

Unless Crowell comes to life today, he may well follow Ealey’s path to a smaller program. At this point, he is a liability in spite of the special attention Richt has lavished upon him. Crowell sought out a program that would coddle him and found it with Richt. It would have been interesting to see what Crowell would have done, if anything, at Alabama. Beside the issues with Crowell, this has been a different UGA team–fewer legal issues and penalties and less on-field posturing. The talent is certainly there for a great 2012. The coaching remains weak but is improving.

You must be CRAZY. The SEC has won MNC’s without the playoff.
A playoff will pit teams that shouldn’t have a chance to win game because of BAD match-ups.
The SEC would; more likely than not, have won the last 5 MNC’s if a playoff was in place.

If Crowell doesn’t answer the challenge and get competetive for the entire game, then I would bench him for the Bowl game and go recruit 2-3 of the best and toughest RB’s around. It seems like the coaching staff has made that (recruiting) decision already, and rightfully so. Crowell appears to be a wuss and even worse – he seems completely disinterested in what is happpening on the field while he picks and chews on his fingernails while sitting on the bench or standing in the back causually joking and laughing. 800 plus yards or not he has been a big disappointment in my book.
