LSU fans are feeling good about their team and the Mad Hatter. (Associated Press)
For a view from Tiger land on how our opposing fandom is approaching Saturday’s SEC Championship game against Georgia, I checked in with my old friend Owen Scott, who grew up with me in Athens (where his mom still lives), graduated from UGA and has been a clinical psychologist in Baton Rouge for many years.
Owen’s wife is an LSU prof, his oldest daughter in a huge Tiger fan and his youngest daughter graduated from UGA last December but is “a Tiger first, Dawg second,” he admitted.
However, Owen, who’s been following the Dawgs all his life, has remained true to the red and black and posts comments on the Blawg under the name Dr. Morpheus.
“I’ve attended most of the LSU-UGA games in Baton Rouge and seen some great wins (2008) and tough losses (2003) here,” he said. He just lucked into two tickets to the Georgia Dome game at face value and will be in attendance Saturday.
The buzz in Baton Rouge, Owen said, has the locals “feeling cocky.”
Typical of the attitude, Owen said, was the discussion Tuesday on a Baton Rouge sports radio show where the host, former LSU basketball player turned football sideline reporter Jordy Hultberg, thought the Tigers being favored by 13 points was right on the mark.
Said Hultberg: “You gotta be loving what’s going on!”
LSU has seldom trailed, Hultberg said, and even when they were down by 14 points to Arkansas the Tigers had no problem quickly scoring 21 points. “They feed off of big plays, whether it be a big return, a turnover, a breakthrough run. … It was over at halftime.”

Owen Scott lives in Baton Rouge but has stayed true to UGA.
The host asked an on-air guest (a local insurance exec) for a prediction on the game with the Dogs and the response was, “I don’t want to be overconfident, but this team has taken care of everyone. It will be worse for Georgia than Arkansas,” which lost to the Tigers 41-17.
In an exchange with a caller, Hultberg said the LSU defense “is smothering. It just makes life miserable for the opposing quarterbacks. And I don’t see any difference with this coming Saturday. We’re coming to win. There’s no back door, we’re coming through the front door.”
Summing up the mood in Baton Rouge, Owen said: “The LSU base is not taking Georgia seriously. They expect to come into the Dome and blow the Dawgs out with their overwhelming defense and pounding rushing attack. It’s up to our guys now to show LSU and the sports world we belong on the same field with the best of the SEC West and consensus No. 1 team in the nation.”
But Owen, at least, is optimistic. “If the LSU players are drinking the fans’ Kool-Aid,” he said, “they will be in for a surprise when they see that, unlike Arkansas, Georgia can stuff the run and pressure the QB. Go Dawgs! GATA!”
Trust him, he’s a doctor.

Land of the Lost, you might want to check into bowl games with Pac-12 and Big 12 matchups. Those should be great for lovers of defenseless football.

Bill,
since you are now behind the enemy line. Do you notice LSU players are much bigger than dawgie players?
Where LSU gets all those players?

All LSU fans are so freaking dumb. Your team is good, maybe great, but the fans, I can’t stand them…I hope the wheels fall off your cars and wings come off the planes you ride into Atlanta on. The country would be much better off without you scumbags.

If Owen was truthful he would have said that many in BR do not like Jordy Hultberg.
In my opinion he is not much better than I would be. He does not do his homework and seems ill-prepared with even some of the basic sports stuff that a radio host should know.

Was in the New Orleans area last night and listening to the WWL coaches show with Bobby Hebert and Co. They discussed how UGA needs to secure the border better with the recruits and they stated that UGA would be a consistent top 5 team every year if CMR did a better job keep recruits home. Just stating the obvious…but it’s the truth and everyone knows it.
Don’t worry LSU…at least you can still play in the BCS title game after a taste of humility.

Vegas is right. LSU is two touch downs better than Georgia. They would have to turn it over at least 3 times more than the Dawgs to lose this game (maybe 4). It could happen, I love the underdawg, but the smart money is on the Tigers. Georgia can change places with LSU next year but this year….ain’t gonna happen.

Vegas is wrong actually. NEVER EVER, and this is by some of their own rules, EVER PUT A DOUBLE DIGIT LINE AGAINST A HOT DEFENSE. Say what you want about the competition level, but the Dawgs have done what they should have and played dominant defense against their opponents.

Good Article Bill! I’ve watched LSU this season and they have a relentless defense and pounding running game. They play all 4 quarters and don’t let up. They are a great team. In the same regard, I have watched UGA all year and I have seen ups and downs since the first 2 games. This team has grown up and are now believing that they can win this game. Not taking anything away from LSU, but the DAWGS are in it to win it and and they will leave their talking on the field.

I watched LSU play West Virgiinia. West Virginia moved the ball well with what appeared to be an undersized team. UGA matches up physically and hopefully we’re just as tough. I think it will be a close game with turnovers making the difference.

Dawgs have no chance. LSU will walk all over them with their 5th team….heck…I wouldn’t even take practice serious this week if I played for LSU….we’ll win EASY. If I’m LSU’s starters I would be getting ready to play Alabama again…this UGA nonsense is silly….were LSU…..we are supposed to beat them BAD….that’s what everybody is saying at least……………

Well, Georgia has played the spoiler pretty well this year. Lost in surviving week after week, is the fact that (five maybe?)so many teams would have been ranked that week had they just beaten Georgia. Too bad. Even ended up getting the best of SC in the end.
