Unfortunately for Tech, Dogs once again caught not looking ahead!

Dogs prove it once again at Grant Field. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Dogs prove it once again at Grant Field. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

I wonder what excuse Paul Johnson will use this time for the Dogs walking off Historic Grant Field as the victors for the sixth consecutive time.

Maybe he can take a page from all those folks (including the ESPN “GameDay” gang) who predicted Georgia Tech would prevail in Saturday’s annual Governor’s Cup game because Mark Richt’s Dogs would be looking ahead to the SEC championship game against LSU.

Perhaps Tech was caught looking ahead to the Hyundai Sun Bowl, or wherever they’re going to play next.

Or maybe Johnson’s excuse can be simply to acknowledge what the Georgia players proclaimed again after the game: When it comes to football, “We run this state.”

Actually, Johnson’s best excuse would be to point out that while he may have a little-seen offensive scheme that is tough to defend, he just flat-out doesn’t have the same caliber talent that Richt has in Athens, particularly on defense.

Even playing without their two top running backs, which made Georgia nearly as one-dimensional offensively as Tech, the Dogs still moved the ball easily against the Jackets most of the day, with Aaron Murray looking particularly sharp in the first half. It could have been worse, as Murray missed a couple of opportunities in the second half, but for the day he completed 19 of 29 passes for 252 yards and padded his UGA season record with four more touchdowns to four different receivers. Unfortunately, Orson Charles wasn’t one of them, but he still led the Dogs with five catches for 95 yards and was a big playmaker.

And while the Georgia running game managed only 128 yards, fifth-stringer Ken Malcome showed some gritty running and extra effort as Georgia handed it to him repeatedly in the fourth quarter to eat up the clock. He wound up with 43 tough yards on a dozen carries. Murray contributed 35 yards of his own on a day when Georgia dialed up more designed quarterback runs than usual, and even Zander Ogletree got into the act with a 21-yard burst on the only fullback run so far this season.

But it wasn’t just the offense that was masterful against the Jackets. Tech managed to get 243 yards rushing Saturday but never really got its running attack in rhythm against the Dogs’ resilient defense, despite all the cut-blocks. And much of the time Tech’s passing game was pretty inept, with Georgia snagging two interceptions.

Plus, while Blair Walsh missed one long field goal attempt, Georgia’s special teams generally had a fine day, with Drew Butler pinning the Jackets deep on a couple of long punts and Brandon Boykin’s 60-yard kickoff return setting up Georgia’s first score of the third quarter.

Really, from the time Georgia went up 14-3 midway through the second quarter, the Dogs appeared to have the game in hand.

Much was made by various pundits in the week leading up to this game about how “even” the rivalry has become in recent years, but in realtiy that’s certainly not the case if you look at the bottom line: who takes home the Governor’s Cup.

As Richt noted after the game with characteristic understatement, “Ten out of 11 ain’t bad.”

OK, now we can worry about LSU.

Feel free to share your own views on what excuses Johnson can use for his team’s showing and anything else relating to Georgia’s latest win over the Bugs.

Go Dogs!

I love the GT Alum who does not like the Tech offense. So tell me genius how did Tech do with a more pro-style offense. I think Tech’s offense fits perfectly for the athletes it can get. It is the defense’s inability to stop folks that causes problems. Remember that UGA has won 10 of 11. 7 of those wins were against pro-style offenses. If Tech can fix its defense it becomes a very dangerous team.

Great win today. CMB may have called his best game all year as he did not have much to work with at running back. Good effort by Boo Malcome The “D” is very good. I don’t know about next week…but 10 wins in a row, winning the SEC east…overall a great season. Congrats to the coaching staff as well as the SRs on the this team. I agree with an earlier post that if Tech could find a defense then they would be difficult to handle.

While the triple option is certainly tough to defend, a decent passing game is really needed to make it that much more effective. Maybe a decent defense also, which Tech surely does not have. And congrats to Coach Bobo who called up a good plan as the passes over the middle were there all day. He must have watched the Tech/Duke film to dial that up.Have to give that one Tech back credit, he got extra yards when it looked as though he was stopped short of yardage. Great win Dogs, just hope you can play tough with the Tigers! I hope Richt and Bobo learned a big lesson the last several years. You cannot give King, Ealy, Crowell or anyone else a starting position without competition. Hopefully the necessity of playing other backs this year and being successful will show that giving a new recruit the job just does not create good will to the other backs on the team. Samuel should be used as a power back in the future to create competition for the tb position. Go

GREAT win today over a better-than-average Tech team! As usual, got the lead and then went conservative. Kudos to Malcome for some hard 4th quarter running. And the defense hung in there. Pretty good job against the triple option IMHO. Only Miami held Tech to less points and yards.

For the SECCG… I love my dogs, and I know we’re on a roll, but I still don’t see us within two touchdowns of LSU. They are a machine. But hey, I say we’ve got a puncher’s chance! JB, I agree with your sentiment about LSU, but we had the same yardage per carry as Tech did today at 4.6 ypc. Bobo chose not to run it today; worked pretty good, I thought. He never really tried pounding it up the gut until the very end of the game when Tech crammed the box with the whole team. We still ran OK then, getting a few first downs. I think he figured, why not go with the more experienced part of the offense, which was the pass today. I also think the line on UGA and Bobo is stop the run and accept the big plays they get on you. I think DCs figure that when we can pound it on you, you will usually lose to us. So I like Bobo pouncing on that mind set and making them pay.

I got to see first-hand the lack of class of the Tech students as they started chanting “To hell with Georgia” during the Redcoats’ tribute to Larry Munson at halftime. Todd Grantham is proof that Georgia has become a “win at all costs” program, and the fact that it is tolerated makes me question my grudging respect for Mark Richt. Georgia people should be embarrassed by Coach Grantham.

As for the “Munson tribute”, I felt that the acknowledgement by Wes Durham before the game was enough and appropriate. The chanters were the student section who we all know were drunk. If a prominent Tech personality had died this week, the drunk Georgia students would have been doing the same thing. It is college.

For everyone who is so excited and sure that we will tear up LSU, I have to say that as much as I wish for you to be right I do have serious reservations about that happening. If you watched the LSU/Arkansas game you should understand why. They are justifiably the number one team in the country. I want for UGA to win as much as anyone but I think our expectations need to be tempered a bit.

Folks of the Fellowship of the Kool-Aid:
View the W-L record of the teams Georgia has beaten. Any conclusions?
If you really want to make a fair evaluation of CMR’s job performance this year, look at the last two games CMR coaches this year. As an alumni of the U of GA, I expect our HC to be successful against the championship caliber coaches in the NCAA. If you think this is unfair, you are wrong. He is paid to be successful at the highest level. If your attitude is, Well we’ve won 10 games this year, I’d call that a success; you are wrong. Successful coaching at this level of competition is winning the games that most observers believe you will lose. You do this by bringing a group of individuals together to form a TEAM. You know the idea. The whole is greater than the sum of all its parts. That’s what successful SEC Football coaches are paid to do. Make a cohesive unit that has the unified goal goal of winning as a team. And then actually accomplishing the goal of the TEAM. Rushing to the conclusion that our HC should be given a contract extension is being-ill informed and being no friend of the Dawgs. Pass on the Kool-Aid. Kick the habit of being satisfied with less than the best results from our HC.

They have 60 minutes to go to get to a real big dance. I wonder if all those lobbying folks, that lobbied for LSU in 2007 will lobby for UGA in 2011, if the Dogs pull an upset. I was on here in September, saying wait guys, this is UGA, and they might run the table. They did! Can Bobo, carve Chavis, and can Grantham stop the express. We will see, and as they have in alot of games since the Carolina game, our Dogs will be underdogs. That folks is a good start. This is the best QB LSU has seen all year, and this is the best team which we have seen in several years. Go Dogs. Oh look at the Championship falling from the sky. Great victory today. I, too, hope we beat LSU but fear that might be asking too much, especially if Crowell doesn’t show up, which the more I see of the kid, the more I think him NOT playing is likely. (Just wondering why Burkehead kid at Nebraska can be in a walking boot all week and then come out and run for over 100 yards. . . Just sayin).

But bigger question: Am I the only person that keeps thinking USC, ARK & ALA all catching a break by NOT playing in SECCG next week? I mean, their records (and poll positions) will all stay in the same place while UGA’s is likely to drop after LSU game. Somehow, playing in SECCG seems more of a curse than a blessing. Am I wrong in my thinking?

I’ve already seen some Tech fans posting that Georgia’s defense didn’t exactly stop Tech since they got 220 something yards rushing. What they overlook is that they need 400 to 450 yards offense to win most games. Tech can’t win with less … so the Dog defense played well.

Anybody who is a DAWG fan, should realize just how much these young kids have accomplished this year. You couldn’t find one DAWG fan, and yes, I am among that number that thought that these DAWGS would get 10 wins, I don’t care the caliber of opposition was. I think, after the S.C. game, when I actually got over being upset about the turnovers and looked at the stats. I thought that this team, wasn’t really that bad. For about 14 of the players, this was their second game in a college situation and they looked pretty good, but were inconsistent. Then, it just seems that a light bulb went on and they got confident in their own abilities and talent and the rest is history. All the pundits that call themselves announcers and journalist and had UGA losing , of course hate the fact that UGA keeps winning because that means they were also wrong about CMR so they are a pitiful 0-2 or more for the season. ESPN, CBS and half the journalist in this country, are even close to being objective reporters or journalist. It just goes to prove that sports reporting and announcing is more about their personal feelings than honestly evaluating a team and knowing enough about them to report fairly.
Now UGA will have a tough time with LSU, and they will struggle to be competitive but no matter what, UGA can hold it’s head up high. The future is bright for these young men, and they have proved so far this season, that they are a bunch of good kids that have a lot of heart and are a team. Sure we have one or two bad eggs or at least non conformist for the team, but folks, CMR handled it and they sat out games and sometimes didn’t play because their interest got in the way of the teams goals. Next year, they most likely will not be part of the team. It is get on board the train, or carry the baggage for others.
UGA, no matter the outcome of the SEC Championship game, will get a decent bowl game and have a chance to win at least 11 games for the season. I think recruiting is on the upswing now, and if we can get a few RB’s to solidify that position and a few Ol’s, UGA will actually be recruiting to build teams for a few years down the road as well. We also need to address the need to extend the coaches contracts, so the core of the leadership stays together. CMR is a great recruiter because he represents the university, himself and the core values that many of the young kids don’t get at home today. He represents hope and a chance for these young kids to make something for themselves. Yes, there will be a few bad eggs no matter how hard he might try to change things for them, but he is not at fault for not being able to change a life of going the wrong way for all the kids he coaches. No coach, pastor or mentor will be able to do that. He does however, weather a storm bettor than just about any coach that has ever been under the microscope that is college sports reporting and prognosticators better than the majority of coaches in this country. There isn’t a much better comparison that CMR and CPJ. One knows how to motivate his young troops positively and the other, thinks insulting a teams fan base is the way to go.
If you can’t be proud of the UGA team this year, then possibly you really aren’t a true UGA fan. Your team has proven that they are winners and your coaches have done an outstanding job this year. Everybody saying UGA has all this talent or some other gibberish and the SEC east is so down, should remember one thing, every other team in this conference had just as many young kids and a lot of them skilled as well, but UGA coached them up into winners. Why didn’t these other coaches do the same thing? . It wasn’t because they had new coaching staffs, or any other pile of excuses everybody wants to use, to say that UGA is just lucky. It is because UGA coached up our young talent and made them winners,

RedandBlackDawg, I fially got throught that whole page you wrote, and didn’t notice the name of Todd Grantham anywhere.

If not for Grantham’s #4 Defense this season, folks on here would still be writing about Mark Richt’s future. Remember that he even held SC’s offense to 24 (17 if you don’t count the TD drive that began at our own 5). Not to mention his D shut down everybody in the second half this season who didn’t resort to trick plays of some sort.

I know nobody can ever be compared to the great Erk Russell, but Grantham brings some “Fire” to Richt’s “Ice”, similar to the way Erk brought “Fire” to Dooley’s “Ice.” Great combinations, both.

I do agree that Richt is a good man to have at the HC position, a CEO, but let’s give credit where it is due for this turnaround. The return of the Junkyard D. And if we give LSU a close game, it will be Grantham who will be mostly responsible for it.

Go Dawgs! Make us proud at the Dome!

Good victory over Tech!

DAWGMAN’s post a page or two back is right though…

Mark Richt is being paid to win games against the toughest competition out there. So far, our schedule has been pretty weak, except for the first two games.

Of course, any Georgia fan loves to beat any team we play, and we should celebrate all victories by the boys on our football team – especially over the NATS – and these boys have done a nice job of it, haven’t they.

Pretending that Mark Richt has done a great coaching job is a joke though. Look at his record against the really strong, winning teams. Winning against a very down Florida, or a weak Tennessee, or a perennial loser like Tech is great, but great professional coaches also win the big games against the top ranked teams, at least a lot more often than Mr. Richt has.

Come on, Coach Richt, let’s see you up your game, and beat someone who really counts. It’s your chance to prove you’ve improved. I hope you show everyone you have morphed into a true college head coach.

I have faith in my team, and I think they just might win if they play error free, and spirited football, but let’s be smart, and honest as we evaluate what we’ve done so far.

Our defense still hasn’t been really tested in the way LSU is likely to test it. I think we might shock them with what our defense can do. I sure hope I’m right, because we have to to have a shot at winning.

Our offense can have good days, and bad days. If Mr. Murray has one of his best days, and our running backs show up, and play their hearts out, we might score some points. Not making bad decisions will be key to any victory. Fortunately, our quarterback seems to have a pretty good head.

Kicking? Who knows?

Bobo? Who knows?

The terrifying thing though is looking at two things as they relate to what LSU has going for it, the things that make LSU so dominant.

Remember the LSU/Alabama game? Nobody could do anything much on offense. LSU really stopped Alabama’s offense. Alabama did the same to LSU.

Look at LSU’s offense against Arkansas. They ran all over the Hogs.

Look at Alabama’s offense against Auburn. Destroyed them.

It looks like Mark Richt was right about one thing he said yesterday, “LSU has a great team!?” They have a great enough defense to shut down an excellent Alabama offense, and they have a good enough offense to destroy the number three team in the country.

Is our defense good enough, as Alabama’s was, to shut down LSU?

Is our offense good enough to score on a defense that shut down Alabama’s offense?

Another scary question: Will Mike Bobo have a clue what to do against a defense like LSU’s?

If we manage to win our next two games, will we carry that forward to next year, and start off with a team prepared to beat the big boys (Anybody see how good South Caroline looked against Clemson. Wow!).

I sure hope the answers are all yes.

But, let’s be measured in our congratulations for Mark Richt. Our team is winning – great for them, and great for us – Mr. Richt has yet to prove himself.

Contract extensions should be for coaches that beat the big boys. We have a big game coming up, against one of the best teams anyone has seen in a while. Let’s see if Mark Richt is the professional we all hope he is.

Go, Bulldogs!

Bill: They “WERE” looking ahead to next week. Why do you think they didn’t bring the running game. We knew we would not need it, until next week. I heard they actually thought about leaving the passing game at home as well, and just trotting out the band or the scout team, but someone said to give Murray some extra practice time with his freshman receivers. It is also my understanding that the Falcons were the ones that they really wanted to scrimmage against, but since they and Buford HS, were already busy, Tech was all that was left. I normally do not react to the ‘Mickey Mouse’ stuff from trolls or even from our own fans – but have had enough from the Clowns from Columbia.

Some quick thoughts..

The last few games have been very close. Give Tech credit, they fought the entire game and found a way to keep them close. But this year never felt that way. Crowell was suited up for a reason. If he was really needed – CMR would have used him. It quickly became clear to the coaching staff that they could ‘rest him’. Tech was over matched on both sides of the ball. You knew by the half that this game was Georgia’s to lose that Tech didn’t have the players to beat Georgia straight up. There was a large talent gap on the field. This game felt like the first three when CMR took over. In other words, the game never really felt in doubt.

LSU is a superb football team. They are well coached and balanced on offense. A one dimensional offense equates to ‘no shot’ against this football team. Crowell has to be ready to go in order for Georgia to have a shot. I do not expect Georgia to win this game, but I also do not expect Georgia to be blown out. We’ll see what happens…

Wishing everyone a great week (even the trolls)

Off to church.

Throwing insults around like a man-boobed clown.

East Repeat, thanks for the compliment – SC and UGA are, for now, on top of the East. But how is SC “better?” It took trick plays and 3 UGA turnovers, 2 for scores, for you guys to score 45, and while our offense scored 42 your offense scored 24.

We had very similar seasons, with the exceptions of SC handling KY, who we struggled with, and Auburn, who beat SC, then got man-handled by UGA worse than LSU and Bama did them.

We won the East, despite handing over our game to you on a silver platter.

Congrats on the 10-win (for now) season, and the rout of Clemson. Hope we both have good showings in the bowls.

First, Go Dawgs! Now, Paul Johnson is not a bad coach. The Tech Defense is their problem. Their offense can score, UGA is just a better team. When it comes to LSU, I think UGA matches up well against them. It will come down to how much UGA players want it and the offensive game plan that is put in place. UGA defense is capable of stopping the LSU run, the secondary will have to ready for the occasional deep passes that LSU puts up.

The LSU offense will certainly test the UGA defense. Their offense skill positions are 2-3 players deep and all as good as the #1. Not a very proficient offense per se’ but very very solid and continually fresh. They do wear defenses down. The question is, is the Dawg defense deep enough. Bamma’s was, just Bama had a lackluster offense and no kicking game. As good as the Georgia defense has been. it’s not been tested like LSU will test it

Kick off to UGA and i am thinking, ” Stop UGA, force punt, and drive for TD to ice the game”. Well Clowney and Ingram completed this scenario in one play- strip Murray, take ball, score TD, and ice game. No need for an offense when the “dominant” bulldogs allow it all to happen in one play. Only way UGA moves ahead of SC is an UGA win over LSU and bowl victory while SC loses bowl game. Who do you think willl be in the better bowl, UGA or SC?

Very good win yesterday against a pretty good team, defense didn’t give up many big plays, made Tech….in the words of Hank Stram…..”matriculate the ball down the field”, and we stopped them before they could get to the end zone very often. Big kick return to start the 2nd half to take control of the game, and Murray was sharp most of the day, hitting some nice mid range throws, and most importantly…..4 TD passes.

Ok, now it’s LSU in the Dome, for SECGC…..man sized task, noooo question…..biggest key to having a chance…….pressure Jefferson and protect Murray, Aaron absolutely must play a great game, we gotta hit some big plays in the passing game, we won’t be able to run much. Our D can hold them down enough to give us a chance to win, we can’t give up big punt returns because we sure won’t get any. Blair must must must make FGs when we have the chance, we can’t leave any points out there. Remember you heard it here…….UGA 20-17, and the turnaround to a great year is capped when we beat most likely Michigan in the Sugar Bowl.

There is no way you can say that South Carolina (the “other USC”) is better than us right now. We dominated them in our game, but they found a way to win by making multiple game changing plays. I’m not predicting a win either but neither a loss. It’s tough to tell how LSU will react to a potent offense along with a strong defense. They’ve not played anyone with that particular set. Georgia is much improved from the first of the year in all phases of the game. LSU is good and I make no bones about it. They should beat us but, beat us handily? I don’t think so. They could even get surprised. Georgia will have to play a hard game for 60 minutes to even have a chance. That’s where we will be weak. Or will we? Has the strength and conditioning made a difference? Can Richt coach for 60 minutes anymore? It’s going to be a good game. These homers predicting a blowout likely will be surprised

It was little unfortunate that we got the second or third tier announcers for yesterday’s game with Tech. I agree with the criticism of Ed Cunningham. With the score 31-10, he was calling for Mark Richt to pull Aaron Murray from the game. Then, when Tech scored he had to explain that he then thought it was OK for Murray to be in the game at that point. I hope that guy was never an actual coach.

East Repeat,

What is it exactly that S.C. is repeating East repeat? You aren’t going to the SEC championship, you did not win the East and as of Sunday Nov. 27th, you are number 14 in the BCS while UGA is number 12. You have been in the SEC for 19 years and have won a total of one SEC east title. I guess your team beating Clemson yesterday was your repeat or whatever. You were in the ACC for 19 years and only won the ACC once during that time as well. Your schools overall record since you started playing football is 544-540-44 and UGA’s record for their overall time in football is 747-396-54. Guess who has the higher winning percentage? And guess who has been in the SEC all of that time?
Now I wouldn’t expect that you are smart enough to know, when people are insulting your lack of intelligence so I wouldn’t think that presenting cold hard facts to you, would open your eyes and shut your mouth, but you will never admit it, but S.C. is not much else right now, than a flash in the pan. Your team has turned into a one year wonder and no amount of stupid comments about UGA will change that fact. Please leave out all of the stupid excuses about injuries this and Garcia that. It is over, and you are now second in the SEC East.

GO DAWGS and GATA

And to top it off, you still think you are the east champions in 2011. Your short rein ended two weeks ago. That means you are a one trick pony, not a repeater, in case you can’t get it through your thick skull. You need to go back to your S.C. blog and try to boost your fans spirits up, because they are no longer east champions. UGA IS.
Most likely,LSU will beat us, as we are young and still learning how to play in big time games. I bet they don’t get beat as bad as Auburn beat you last year. You know, the same Auburn team that ripped you this year again. The same Auburn that UGA beat 45-7, in case you have conveniently forgotten.
If you are going to come onto a blog that shouldn’t concern you at all, at least have the guts to try and create some other B.S., than what you now keep repeating over and over again.

I think the Dawgs will go into the SEC C game ready to prove they can play with the undisputed #1 team in the nation. The game will be won on defense- LSU has a huge edge in TO margin but we have a lot more take-aways. If we stop their running game, get Jarvis in Jefferson & Lee’s face, don’t give up big plays, and don’t turn it over, we will win. And LSU will still play in the BCS NC game while we go to the Sugar Bowl. Life is strange.

ESPN is horrible for college football. It is sad when a TV network can decide that the results of the SEC Championship (the biggest game in college football) has no meaning on who plays for the NC.

It has been decided weeks ago that Bama and LSU are playing for the NC no matter what rules are broken or how bad their offenses are. ESPN has already decided.

LSU has already responded to a defense like ours, Bama’s and as you know they came out on top. The bigger question IMHO is how will they respond to our offense. Yes their defense is excellent especially against lesser offenses. Defense won’t win this game, offenses will. Excellent defenses on both teams. It’ll take a good offense to win this one me thinks. For the open minded, you have to kind’a sort’a give that edge to Georgia

I doubt Herbie has even seen us play this year. Why else would he pick Tech?

I thought that was a very interesting comment from one of the TV guys (which is unusual because they typically wing it from thir pre-detemined talking points only) that Georgia made a very effective change after the Boise game. Starting out they had the linemen spread further apart to create bigger running lanes for Crowell or whomever, but because Murray had no protection, they made a change which has been very effective, pulling the line in tighter. Good adjustment from the staff.

Lawdawg, if folks are being honest, this year did exceed everybodies expectation. Now, having to deal with lowered expectation as a result of the previous year is a legitamate beef, but the reality is this is not only a great year based on that, but also most fair folks would say, just pretty darn good year in general. I know a few other fan bases that would trade places right now, even if they had to take last year in the deal.
