Dogs prove it once again at Grant Field. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
I wonder what excuse Paul Johnson will use this time for the Dogs walking off Historic Grant Field as the victors for the sixth consecutive time.
Maybe he can take a page from all those folks (including the ESPN “GameDay” gang) who predicted Georgia Tech would prevail in Saturday’s annual Governor’s Cup game because Mark Richt’s Dogs would be looking ahead to the SEC championship game against LSU.
Perhaps Tech was caught looking ahead to the Hyundai Sun Bowl, or wherever they’re going to play next.
Or maybe Johnson’s excuse can be simply to acknowledge what the Georgia players proclaimed again after the game: When it comes to football, “We run this state.”
Actually, Johnson’s best excuse would be to point out that while he may have a little-seen offensive scheme that is tough to defend, he just flat-out doesn’t have the same caliber talent that Richt has in Athens, particularly on defense.
Even playing without their two top running backs, which made Georgia nearly as one-dimensional offensively as Tech, the Dogs still moved the ball easily against the Jackets most of the day, with Aaron Murray looking particularly sharp in the first half. It could have been worse, as Murray missed a couple of opportunities in the second half, but for the day he completed 19 of 29 passes for 252 yards and padded his UGA season record with four more touchdowns to four different receivers. Unfortunately, Orson Charles wasn’t one of them, but he still led the Dogs with five catches for 95 yards and was a big playmaker.
And while the Georgia running game managed only 128 yards, fifth-stringer Ken Malcome showed some gritty running and extra effort as Georgia handed it to him repeatedly in the fourth quarter to eat up the clock. He wound up with 43 tough yards on a dozen carries. Murray contributed 35 yards of his own on a day when Georgia dialed up more designed quarterback runs than usual, and even Zander Ogletree got into the act with a 21-yard burst on the only fullback run so far this season.
But it wasn’t just the offense that was masterful against the Jackets. Tech managed to get 243 yards rushing Saturday but never really got its running attack in rhythm against the Dogs’ resilient defense, despite all the cut-blocks. And much of the time Tech’s passing game was pretty inept, with Georgia snagging two interceptions.
Plus, while Blair Walsh missed one long field goal attempt, Georgia’s special teams generally had a fine day, with Drew Butler pinning the Jackets deep on a couple of long punts and Brandon Boykin’s 60-yard kickoff return setting up Georgia’s first score of the third quarter.
Really, from the time Georgia went up 14-3 midway through the second quarter, the Dogs appeared to have the game in hand.
Much was made by various pundits in the week leading up to this game about how “even” the rivalry has become in recent years, but in realtiy that’s certainly not the case if you look at the bottom line: who takes home the Governor’s Cup.
As Richt noted after the game with characteristic understatement, “Ten out of 11 ain’t bad.”
OK, now we can worry about LSU.
Feel free to share your own views on what excuses Johnson can use for his team’s showing and anything else relating to Georgia’s latest win over the Bugs.
Go Dogs!

Wow,
I am a dog fan sitting in camp bastion Afghanistan.
This one was different than the other games against tech that came down to the wire. Tech really never had a chance, sad,
This isn’t a rivalry, it’s a annual beat down.
Maybe we need to swap tech for Ga State, or GSU eagles.
Go dawgs!

GREAT win today over a better-than-average Tech team! As usual, got the lead and then went conservative. Kudos to Malcome for some hard 4th quarter running. And the defense hung in there. Pretty good job against the triple option IMHO. Only Miami held Tech to less points and yards.
For the SECCG… I love my dogs, and I know we’re on a roll, but I still don’t see us within two touchdowns of LSU. They are a machine. But hey, I say we’ve got a puncher’s chance! Let’s go in there and give it our best shot. Who knows? Maybe a few turnovers, a good day of defense… it could happen! GO DAWGS!

hahahahahahahahah…..that was for all of you pathetic, classless tech fans who made comments about the great Larry Munson. Football loyalty aside, I’ve never heard such disgraceful remarks from a fan base.

JB, I agree with your sentiment about LSU, but we had the same yardage per carry as Tech did today at 4.6 ypc. Bobo chose not to run it today; worked pretty good, I thought. He never really tried pounding it up the gut until the very end of the game when Tech crammed the box with the whole team. We still ran OK then, getting a few first downs. I think he figured, why not go with the more experienced part of the offense, which was the pass today. I also think the line on UGA and Bobo is stop the run and accept the big plays they get on you. I think DCs figure that when we can pound it on you, you will usually lose to us. So I like Bobo pouncing on that mind set and making them pay.

How do you get people to notice a pathetic football program? Play on Thursday nights, be last in your Conference in graduation rates, hire head coaches that make a fool of himself…over and over and over…
We’ll think about you in about a year, you just keep thinking of us 24/7/365 – actually you get an extra day in 2012!

Where is the outrage from ESPN about a potential rematch in the NC game between bama and LSU? A few years ago, they did all they could to tear down UGA’s chances of playing in the the NC game. They said if you didn’t win your conference championship, you didn’t deserve to be in the NC game under any circumstance. Now they are saying that even if LSU loses to UGA, that LSU vs. Bama should be the title game. How can this be.
Bill, why don’t you write an article on this subject?

I got to see first-hand the lack of class of the Tech students as they started chanting “To hell with Georgia” during the Redcoats’ tribute to Larry Munson at halftime. That goes beyond football or a rivalry, it’s just disrespectful as a HUMAN to do something like that when a person has passed away. As a UGA fan, I wouldn’t even do that during a tribute to a deceased steve spurrier, even as much as I hate him. However, I guess when you’ve lost 10 of the last 11 to the big boys in this state, it tends to make you a little bitter.

The rude behavior by some in the Tech crowd are Foreign or west coast students going to Tech and have no idea who Munson was. They just are taught to hate everything UGA, and that;s what they do. If you ever needed more proof, I don’t know where you would find it. Tech is full of “transplants” and are not of the Bobby Dodd cut of cloth. They are closer to the wall st protester type. I’m sure most of the Tech old guard was horrified.
Where are they now?

Bloggers on here who love Tech football know they are in trouble, unless 8 or 9 wins is OK with them. And for Tech, who has a difficult time recruiting the type players who get you to 11-1.12-0, Johnson may be as good as it gets for them.

Gators are in trouble also. Meyer left a mess. You wouldn’t think so reading the recruiting results, but I see no one on that roster today who can come in next year and make a pro offense work, such as a QB,FB,TE,RB WR’s. None. 10 freshman can’t do it. The “fans” have already given up on Muschamp. The Ad know they owe him about 10 mil after this year…..so, he’ll get his chance. Dooley may not survive. I think he gets one more, but he may be toast after next year.

Great win for Coach Richt and staff, Under great pressure after losing season last year and losing first two games this year, Nice to see a smile on his face. Lets hope running game returns against LSU, Crowell should be full speed and word is Sammuel will be back, LSU has great speed but so does Georgia, LSU will be heavy favorite but I think Ga can play with them, Get the turnovers and anything can happen.

Congratulations to Georgia for winning today. With that said, you really shouldn’t talk about anyone having a lack of class. I was 20 feet away from Todd Grantham all day and had to listen to his vulgar mouth nonstop. Not just normal football coach stuff, but downright vile and vulgar stuff. Todd Grantham is proof that Georgia has become a “win at all costs” program, and the fact that it is tolerated makes me question my grudging respect for Mark Richt. Georgia people should be embarrassed by Coach Grantham.
As for the “Munson tribute”, I felt that the acknowledgement by Wes Durham before the game was enough and appropriate. The chanters were the student section who we all know were drunk. If a prominent Tech personality had died this week, the drunk Georgia students would have been doing the same thing. It is college.

For everyone who is so excited and sure that we will tear up LSU, I have to say that as much as I wish for you to be right I do have serious reservations about that happening. If you watched the LSU/Arkansas game you should understand why. They are justifiably the number one team in the country. I want for UGA to win as much as anyone but I think our expectations need to be tempered a bit.
No matter how that game turns out it has already been an amazing season–one we will remember for many years to come.
