Jarvis Jones, running backs … and return of the Power Rangers?

This blog was posted Sunday night about an hour before the news of Larry Munson’s death broke, at which point I put up a Munson memorial. For those of you who might have missed this earlier entry, here it is again …

Jarvis Jones: The Beast of the East! (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Jarvis Jones: The Beast of the East! (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Week in, week out I don’t think there’s any doubt who’s been the player of the year for the SEC East champions: Jarvis Jones.

Against the Cats, Jones, who transferred to Georgia from Southern Cal after the staff there decided an injury had made him no longer fit to play, had another 2.5 sacks, giving him a conference-leading 12.5 for the season. The former Trojan also forced the fumble that set up Georgia’s only touchdown.

LSU may have its Honey Badger, but Georgia has the Beast of the East. Thank you, USC! …

Some Georgia fans, including former quarterback Buck Belue, are wondering why Isaiah Crowell didn’t attempt to return to the game Saturday with a taped up ankle if, as Mark Richt said Sunday, he’s expected to be ready to play against Georgia Tech.

As Buck put it in his blog: “Must have been more than a tweak, right? How could a competitor sit there and watch his offense struggle like that, if it were just a tweak? Got to figure a competitor would have felt the urge to tape it up tight and go. Tough it out. So, his ankle must be hurting … or he’s just not that much of a competitor. And if it’s hurt that bad, how could he be ready to go on Saturday against Georgia Tech? Just saying.”

Of course, there’s another possible explanation: The Dogs didn’t absolutely need Crowell to return to the game in order to beat Kentucky, and so the coaching staff elected to keep him safely on the sideline.

I don’t know which it was, but, judging from the conservative playcalling (ranging from vanilla runs up the middle to not going for a field goal on fourth down late in the fourth quarter), it looked to me like Mike Bobo and Richt decided the defense was playing well enough to win and there was no need to take any further risks on offense.

As Bobo said after the game, “We did enough to win.” …

Two more thoughts on the subject of running backs: Richt was still mum Sunday on Carlton Thomas’ future but you’ve got to figure that, unless there are some extenuating circumstances, a third full-game suspension this season, especially coming just two weeks after his last one, is likely to mean we’ve seen the last of No. 30. … And let’s hope recruiting target Keith Marshall had the same thought Saturday that many UGA fans had: Crowell spends so much time on the sideline, for one reason or another, that if Marshall comes to Georgia he ought to have plenty of opportunity to play as a true freshman. …

Finally, here’s an unconfirmed rumor out of Athens: The seniors told Richt that if they won the SEC East they’d like the chance to wear those Nike Power Ranger uniforms again in the Georgia Dome, one source says, and he told them they could.

Now, from what I understand the SEC West representative will be the home team this year, and if it’s anyone other than LSU, that would preclude the Dogs being red. But if it’s LSU, which prefers white jerseys even at home, it could happen.

I’m hoping the rumor isn’t true, though. Sure, I think the team deserves some sort of reward for winning the East and I’m not automatically against red tops and bottoms for a special occasion. And the silver helmets weren’t awful.

But those tacky no-name jerseys worn against Boise State? Please, no!

RBs should have their eyes on the playing time situation opening up at UGA. If your a RB and want to both win and play, on a bigtime stage, then UGA is your place for 2012.

The Power Ranger uniforms are the worst ever. Ohio State had a combat uniform a few weeks ago with a helmet that looked a lot like UGA’s and the uniform wasn’t vomitus like Georgia’s.

I’d vote for the black jerseys a million times before I’d vote for the Power Ranger getup!

Jarvis Jones has been terrific, and he’s a big reason for our defensive turnaround this year. We couldn’t have asked for a better player.

As for Thomas, yeah, he probably should go. I don’t know what the infraction was, but three times in a year is enough to convince me. It’s a shame, too, because he played his heart out when he was out there. Too bad he didn’t try hard enough to stay on the field.

As for Crowell, I think the staff wanted to hold him at least until halftime and probably play him in the second half. but when Harton broke out after halftime, I think they kept him on the bench to rest him (and maybe put a little humility into him, too, if he was able to play).

Either way, yeah, he’s been injury prone, but how many great running backs have had trouble with injuries? Demarco Murray at Oklahoma and Percy Harvin at Florida are two I can name.

Even if Crowell isn’t ready for Tech, Harton and Malcome should be able to carry the load. Yeah, they put the ball on the ground WAY too often for my liking, but they were running their hearts out. And against a Tech defense that isn’t known for being physical (to my knowledge, anyway), I think they’ll do quite well.

As for the uniform theory, I don’t mind giving the players a reward for winning the East, but I’d make it contingent upon them beating Tech. We don’t to end up looking forward to next week and dropping one in Atlanta. That’s not really dependent on uniforms, but I don’t want there to be any possibility of such a scenario.

As for the Boise Power Ranger uniform, Hell no! Those were HIDEOUS! If we’re going to let them wear an alternate uniform, bring back the BLACK!!!

They looked fantastic, and I think they were shelved far too quickly after the ‘08 Bama game. Does Penn State win every Whiteout they play? Nope.

Besides, the uniforms didn’t lose that game: the players did. Yeah, Bama was up 31-0 at halftime, but you realize we scored 30 points in the second half, right? Only two other teams that year scored 30 points in an ENTIRE GAME against Bama (Florida and Utah).

It’s not like we lost as bad as we did when we used the Grambling helmets against Florida in ‘09: now THOSE should never been seen again.

Go Dawgs!

I disagree with Buck on that one. If most body parts get injured, it is better to ice it and immobilize it. We stand a much better chance of having him full speed for LSU. If we struggle offensively with Tech, and he can go, then we could use him there. Smart is often better than tough. If it is the SECCG, that would be a different story.

One other point on just enough to win. Margin of victory does make a big difference. We lost a lot of momentum with pollsters by struggling against the Cats. If we had won impressively, we would have been ranked much higher. The computers don’t use it, but people can’t resist. We need to crush Tech and LSU to have a chance at the big house, and it is pretty remote even then…oh, to have 15 more minutes to practice screens before SC!

I’m with Mr. Robards about the uniforms. They looked like Dave Bowman in 2001, A Space Odyssey, and look what happened to him. Besides, every time – I mean EVERY time – since UGA adopted the red helmets with the oval G that we’ve worn different helmets, we got pounded. UGA has one of the most iconic home uniforms in all of sports. If it was good enough for Herschel, it’s good enough for these youngsters.

There’s probably an official in heaven – The Football Angel – whose job it is to disallow victories by teams wearing excessively ugly uniforms.

Even considering letting Nike pick our uniforms once, and even considering wearing the Ghetto Ranger uniforms again, and even thinking of wearing something far out of the University of Georgia tradition – these are things that tell us a lot about what is wrong with our coaching, and administrative staffs.

Top Row, I’ve been accused of being Malcome’s dad because I have argued for his potential more than once here. I was excited to see him early, and what is the first thing he does? Puts it on the ground! He did look very strong on the last series in both games, carrying a lot of defenders. The good thing is that hopefully, this will get his head straightened out, and he can start concentrating on football. He definitely has a lot of strength. Harton is very quick, but I think Malcome can do very well in the box, better than any back we have had in years. He needs practice and playing time, though. He is only a freshman (RS), and usually these guys need a little time to get comfortable. Remember, Moreno didn’t really break out as a RS freshman until Jax, even though he looked good. If Boo fumbles, though, the playing time ain’t going to happen. I thought they should have tried to give him a few more carries in the second half. Harton was doing great, but we really need to develop Malcome’s talent, too. Doesn’t happen instantly with about 90% of them.

I have no idea what is in his heart. All I know for sure about him was that he picked Georgia despite having its worst year in a long time, probably would have been a better “me” pick to go someplace else, came in and competed for the job, carried the ball for us as much as almost anyone in the SEC irrespective of class, has played through some nics and bruises, has always been polite and respectful that I am aware of, paid for a couple of mistake WAY more than he would have at any other SEC school, (and I would argue more so than past players), and seems to be willing, coachable, and talented. So based on that, I don’t assume to know anymore about him than I do.

I would note that Richardson didn’t and doesn’t play all the time. Bama’s philosophy is that running in the SEC beats these guys up and you better use a stable of horses, which they have done consistently. Ingram didn’t play hurt, either.

I agree with Belue. Crowell goes out every game with some sort of injury. He did not prepare himself for the punishment of the SEC. He shows no determination and a lazy attitude. The prema donna status he was given will not get him to the NFL. He has attitude has not shown that he was the #1 RB from high school. He does need to play with more heart and determination. Build yourself up IC and you might be a top RB in the NCAA. I have not been impressed with the way he takes himself out of the game. Injuries happen in football, but you have to play through them. Carlton Thomas needs to go. Bring in 3 RB’s this year and keep the train moving. IF they can’t get with the program, get rid of them. A big lack of discipline at the RB position and that falls on the OC and the RB coach. The change at DC did wonders for the team and now it’s time to revamp the Offensive side of the ball.

You can’t wear black unis at Tech because they are dark uniforms and the home team always gets the dark uniforms or actually the choice of uniform and most always chooses the darker color. People are saying to go with the pro-combat or the black unis for the SECC because IF LSU gets in they will be the home team and they prefer to wear the lighter color as the home team which would give us the opportunity to wear either the red pro-combat OR the black jerseys. In that case, I like the idea of wearing the black jerseys in honor of Larry.

I wouldn’t be suprised if travathian’s nfl highlight film has a lot of harton on it. Harton took a lot of shots but hung in there and stayed on the field. The seniors have not earned, and no seniors ever will earn, the right to wear Ghetto Ranger jerseys.

These seniors, like all UGA seniors, should be proud to dress out in the uniforms of Georgia, which does not mean the uniforms of some fool from Nike who should have better taste, and a modicum of class, before attempting fashion design, especially for football, where the uniform is meaningful.

If Mark Richt choses to allow anyone to wear such ugliness, and represent the University of Georgia, Mr. Richt should be run out of the state.

Once was far more than enough. Ugh!

My guess is the Uniform Angel will punish Georgia, should there be a decision to wear the ugliest uniform in the history of the world, with losses in the next three games.

I’m convinced the Ghetto Ranger uniforms caused the Boise loss, as our players couldn’t possibly have recognized each other in the uniforms of cartoon characters.

Go away, Power Rangers, go away forever.

I’m an old guy but I’m not going to act like one: Personally, I like the black jerseys with red helmets; but, if the seniors want the Nike Combat gear, why make a big deal out of it? If it was promised to them, let’s forget it and move on. As for Crowell and the KY game, fumbles by the other RBs and Murray not seeing wide open receivers were the biggest factors in our lack of scoring. Turning it over 4 times (3 by the RBs) makes it hard to beat anyone. UGA has won the TO battle most of the season and will certainly need to do so against Tech, much less the SEC West champ. That said, Crowell has run tough when he’s been in and he says in interviews he realizes he’s going to have to become more resilient. But the disciplinary suspensions… how many second chances do you let guys have before you lose all credibility (just ignore the trolls who jump on this comment).

re: crowell, i hate to interject with actual facts, but:

richardson (2009): 145 carries
lattimore (2010): 249 carries
crowell (2011, through 11 games): 172 carries.

he won’t catch lattimore, who is much bigger than crowell, but he’s already run it more times than trent did his freshman year. crowell is doing just fine for an 18 year old and, like altamaha said, we’re headed to a shyte bowl without that young man.

If we are the visitors versus LSU in the SEC Championship, I propose we wear white jerseys with red pants. (1) Would be a GREAT tribute to Larry Munson and (2) would make LSU have to wear their purple jerseys. I hope all of the DAWG nation realize we owe it to Munson to win every game for him.

I’m just not getting the need to invent speculation about somebodies motives, when the most logical conclusion (aside from it being right there on the replay) is that he was hurt. The big problem with the argument that he simply did not want to be in the game, is that it requires ignoring all the obvious motives that he would have had to be in the game.

AltamahaDawg

and considereing that Lattimore’s 14 game total, VS Crowell’s 9 full game, IC is pretty much right there in carries per game.

When did we become a fan base that is so quick to talk bad about one of our own players because he got hurt?

If Buck Belue really did say something about Crowell I hope that CMR gives him hell about doing his job for him. Belue should know better. I will not judge Crowell unless I can run the ball 20 times a game in the SEC , get run over by 300 pound linemen or 260 pound linebackers .Why don’t you complainer run full speed into a wall about 15 time and see how you feel afterwards. Lattimore has a torn ACL, Moreno has a torn ACL . A running back’s life is all about pain in the SEC and Pro ball so give this 18 year old a break and show a little support. Let CMR handle the criticism against Crowell and take the appropriate action if any is warranted. I think he has done a good job in his first year. If I remember correctly Walker didn’t even play until the Tennessee game during his Freshman year because Dooley hadn’t made up his mind if he was going to red shirt him or not.

Give Crowell a permanent seat on the bench with a “0″ jersey. If given a choice, wear traditional red jersey with a black patch in remembrance of the #1 Bulldog fan, Larry Munson. Win it for the “Gipper”! GO DAWGS! Oh, Crowell is definitely NOT a true Bulldog!! He sat on the bench during the Kentucky game smiling the whole time. This guy didn’t want to go back in the game. Really!! It was obvious!! While in high school, he took himself out of every game he could. He has no fighting spirit! Good players play thru a little pain! I have to agree with Buck on this one! I just hope the Dawgs who played Auburn will show up for the last two games instead of the one who played Kentucky! GO JARVIS JONES!!!!

I am glad that Crowell didn’t get 245 carries like Lattimore. Look what happened to Lattimore: last season missed key time with an ankle sprain and got knocked out against FSU. He’s out for the season this year. I’m not taking anything away from Lattimore. He is a very talented RB. But, Spurrier put the world’s on his shoulders, and his injuries have cost SC two seasons. Crowell has stayed relatively healthy and come up big when needed. Richt and staff were smart not to place the world on Crowell’s 18 year old shoulders.

Hate Richt and Bobo all you want (it comes with the job description), but lay off our young players. They don’t deserve crap from ignorant wannabes.

Hey ‘75 ‘76 dog, you musta been around when I was. Of course SEC running is tough, but others have done it. Lattimore was INJURED SEVERELY! He did NOT quit, nor did he take himself out when the watergirl bumped into him. Even a casual fan recognizes toughness and tenacity, and this kid ain’t there. He may improve. He has the skills, no doubt. But there are so many other ingredients that make a football player, like character, toughness, and a will not to quit on your teammates. I know as a freshman it is tough to judge, but this kid ain’t ready for the big-time and does not show the intangibles that accompany all real football players. He just has a few God-given abilities, but does not have the where-with-all to use them.

This uniform stuff absolutely falls in the category of “who freaking cares?!?” .. I almost shutter to think how much people would have liked the uniforms if they ran up and down the field on BSU in them. Note to NIKE though: Stop freaking messing with traditions!

Now, as for RB, with Samuel hurt and Crowell being maybe hurt, maybe not, this stuff with Thomas is disheartening. If it turns out to be a behavior deal, then kick him from the team. He is starting to become a constant distraction.

AltamahaDawg

Crowell has played through a wrist injury, a deep rib bruise, and there was a pretty detailed write on on him playing in the second half (which there was no need to be out there) against Auburn after a knee twist was thought to be bad enough to hold him out. His knee was a big concern going into Ky. week. Did he come out and start the game anyway?

Now after 350 lbs linman rolled his ankle, and the staff decided he was just going to be a liability out there, WHY on earth would anyone want him out there? To prove something in your definition of a real football player? No, thanks. The rest of us wanted to win the ballgame. BTW, he had every reason to want to be getting a bunch of yards this past week. You think he just elected not to go back in? That critisism is not only patently unfair but it simply not logical.

Altamaha Dog,
Apparantly you ain’t ever played football. EVERYBODY gets sore wrists, ankles, knees, etc. Everybody gets “rolled-up” on. On the bottom of the pile, you may have 900 lbs. on top of you. I ain’t sayin’ kids don’t get hurt; they do. However, there is a difference between being dinged up a little and being hurt. A football player generally knows the difference. He may turn out to be GREAT, but until he quits racing to the sidelines when a fly lands on him, he ain’t gonna get there. I.C. has come into Athens with some sense of entitlement; lets see how he does agains LSU. He may have all the tools, and be more talented than Harton, but Harton has showed more heart than I.C will ever have: he took those SEC licks, roll-ups, etc. on that little frame and went back for more!

They were a lot of people, questioning Crowell not playing the Kentucky game, after he got his ankle rolled over by a 300 pound player, saying he was soft, and did not have any heart, well the fact is, they took his helmet away from him, and would not let him go back in, even though he wanted too play, it was not his decision, it was the coaching staff, so lay off Crowell.

As I have said numberous times, I steer clear of claiming to know what players/coaches “feel” or “think”. However you know that, fine.
