Jarvis Jones, running backs … and return of the Power Rangers?

This blog was posted Sunday night about an hour before the news of Larry Munson’s death broke, at which point I put up a Munson memorial. For those of you who might have missed this earlier entry, here it is again …

Jarvis Jones: The Beast of the East! (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Jarvis Jones: The Beast of the East! (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Week in, week out I don’t think there’s any doubt who’s been the player of the year for the SEC East champions: Jarvis Jones.

Against the Cats, Jones, who transferred to Georgia from Southern Cal after the staff there decided an injury had made him no longer fit to play, had another 2.5 sacks, giving him a conference-leading 12.5 for the season. The former Trojan also forced the fumble that set up Georgia’s only touchdown.

LSU may have its Honey Badger, but Georgia has the Beast of the East. Thank you, USC! …

Some Georgia fans, including former quarterback Buck Belue, are wondering why Isaiah Crowell didn’t attempt to return to the game Saturday with a taped up ankle if, as Mark Richt said Sunday, he’s expected to be ready to play against Georgia Tech.

As Buck put it in his blog: “Must have been more than a tweak, right? How could a competitor sit there and watch his offense struggle like that, if it were just a tweak? Got to figure a competitor would have felt the urge to tape it up tight and go. Tough it out. So, his ankle must be hurting … or he’s just not that much of a competitor. And if it’s hurt that bad, how could he be ready to go on Saturday against Georgia Tech? Just saying.”

Of course, there’s another possible explanation: The Dogs didn’t absolutely need Crowell to return to the game in order to beat Kentucky, and so the coaching staff elected to keep him safely on the sideline.

I don’t know which it was, but, judging from the conservative playcalling (ranging from vanilla runs up the middle to not going for a field goal on fourth down late in the fourth quarter), it looked to me like Mike Bobo and Richt decided the defense was playing well enough to win and there was no need to take any further risks on offense.

As Bobo said after the game, “We did enough to win.” …

Two more thoughts on the subject of running backs: Richt was still mum Sunday on Carlton Thomas’ future but you’ve got to figure that, unless there are some extenuating circumstances, a third full-game suspension this season, especially coming just two weeks after his last one, is likely to mean we’ve seen the last of No. 30. … And let’s hope recruiting target Keith Marshall had the same thought Saturday that many UGA fans had: Crowell spends so much time on the sideline, for one reason or another, that if Marshall comes to Georgia he ought to have plenty of opportunity to play as a true freshman. …

Finally, here’s an unconfirmed rumor out of Athens: The seniors told Richt that if they won the SEC East they’d like the chance to wear those Nike Power Ranger uniforms again in the Georgia Dome, one source says, and he told them they could.

Now, from what I understand the SEC West representative will be the home team this year, and if it’s anyone other than LSU, that would preclude the Dogs being red. But if it’s LSU, which prefers white jerseys even at home, it could happen.

I’m hoping the rumor isn’t true, though. Sure, I think the team deserves some sort of reward for winning the East and I’m not automatically against red tops and bottoms for a special occasion. And the silver helmets weren’t awful.

But those tacky no-name jerseys worn against Boise State? Please, no!

Let’s beat Tech first, then worry about the SEC game! Maybe for the Tech game we could wear black, in Honor of Larry Munson?

No Mobile , they don’t just hold em out to protect them, So the only other logical conclusion was that he was deemed unable to play physically, correct?

re: crowell, i hate to interject with actual facts, but:

richardson (2009): 145 carries
lattimore (2010): 249 carries
crowell (2011, through 11 games): 172 carries.

he won’t catch lattimore, who is much bigger than crowell, but he’s already run it more times than trent did his freshman year. crowell is doing just fine for an 18 year old and, like altamaha said, we’re headed to a shyte bowl without that young man.

If we are the visitors versus LSU in the SEC Championship, I propose we wear white jerseys with red pants. (1) Would be a GREAT tribute to Larry Munson and (2) would make LSU have to wear their purple jerseys. I hope all of the DAWG nation realize we owe it to Munson to win every game for him.

I’m just not getting the need to invent speculation about somebodies motives, when the most logical conclusion (aside from it being right there on the replay) is that he was hurt. The big problem with the argument that he simply did not want to be in the game, is that it requires ignoring all the obvious motives that he would have had to be in the game.

and considereing that Lattimore’s 14 game total, VS Crowell’s 9 full game, IC is pretty much right there in carries per game.

When did we become a fan base that is so quick to talk bad about one of our own players because he got hurt?

Two things. The 150 pound soak and wet running back can not run against an sec defense so give it up. And the black jerseys are bad ass. Hope we have them on in the Sec championship…Go Dawgs.

You have to be at least three deep at running back in the SEC and I mean three studs!

If Buck Belue really did say something about Crowell I hope that CMR gives him hell about doing his job for him. Belue should know better. I will not judge Crowell unless I can run the ball 20 times a game in the SEC , get run over by 300 pound linemen or 260 pound linebackers .Why don’t you complainer run full speed into a wall about 15 time and see how you feel afterwards. Lattimore has a torn ACL, Moreno has a torn ACL . A running back’s life is all about pain in the SEC and Pro ball so give this 18 year old a break and show a little support. Let CMR handle the criticism against Crowell and take the appropriate action if any is warranted. I think he has done a good job in his first year. If I remember correctly Walker didn’t even play until the Tennessee game during his Freshman year because Dooley hadn’t made up his mind if he was going to red shirt him or not.

Give Crowell a permanent seat on the bench with a “0″ jersey. If given a choice, wear traditional red jersey with a black patch in remembrance of the #1 Bulldog fan, Larry Munson. Win it for the “Gipper”! GO DAWGS! Oh, Crowell is definitely NOT a true Bulldog!! He sat on the bench during the Kentucky game smiling the whole time. This guy didn’t want to go back in the game. Really!! It was obvious!! While in high school, he took himself out of every game he could. He has no fighting spirit! Good players play thru a little pain! I have to agree with Buck on this one! I just hope the Dawgs who played Auburn will show up for the last two games instead of the one who played Kentucky! GO JARVIS JONES!!!!

What’s all the fuss about uniforms. The uniforns don’t win games, players win games. Maybe now and then do a player perfered motivational stunt with uniforms, but change in the middle of a winning roll, I really don’t know. I just hope the right decision is made about what uniforms the Dawgs ware.

I am glad that Crowell didn’t get 245 carries like Lattimore. Look what happened to Lattimore: last season missed key time with an ankle sprain and got knocked out against FSU. He’s out for the season this year. I’m not taking anything away from Lattimore. He is a very talented RB. But, Spurrier put the world’s on his shoulders, and his injuries have cost SC two seasons. Crowell has stayed relatively healthy and come up big when needed. Richt and staff were smart not to place the world on Crowell’s 18 year old shoulders.

Hate Richt and Bobo all you want (it comes with the job description), but lay off our young players. They don’t deserve crap from ignorant wannabes.
