This blog was posted Sunday night about an hour before the news of Larry Munson’s death broke, at which point I put up a Munson memorial. For those of you who might have missed this earlier entry, here it is again …

Jarvis Jones: The Beast of the East! (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)
Week in, week out I don’t think there’s any doubt who’s been the player of the year for the SEC East champions: Jarvis Jones.
Against the Cats, Jones, who transferred to Georgia from Southern Cal after the staff there decided an injury had made him no longer fit to play, had another 2.5 sacks, giving him a conference-leading 12.5 for the season. The former Trojan also forced the fumble that set up Georgia’s only touchdown.
LSU may have its Honey Badger, but Georgia has the Beast of the East. Thank you, USC! …
Some Georgia fans, including former quarterback Buck Belue, are wondering why Isaiah Crowell didn’t attempt to return to the game Saturday with a taped up ankle if, as Mark Richt said Sunday, he’s expected to be ready to play against Georgia Tech.
As Buck put it in his blog: “Must have been more than a tweak, right? How could a competitor sit there and watch his offense struggle like that, if it were just a tweak? Got to figure a competitor would have felt the urge to tape it up tight and go. Tough it out. So, his ankle must be hurting … or he’s just not that much of a competitor. And if it’s hurt that bad, how could he be ready to go on Saturday against Georgia Tech? Just saying.”
Of course, there’s another possible explanation: The Dogs didn’t absolutely need Crowell to return to the game in order to beat Kentucky, and so the coaching staff elected to keep him safely on the sideline.
I don’t know which it was, but, judging from the conservative playcalling (ranging from vanilla runs up the middle to not going for a field goal on fourth down late in the fourth quarter), it looked to me like Mike Bobo and Richt decided the defense was playing well enough to win and there was no need to take any further risks on offense.
As Bobo said after the game, “We did enough to win.” …
Two more thoughts on the subject of running backs: Richt was still mum Sunday on Carlton Thomas’ future but you’ve got to figure that, unless there are some extenuating circumstances, a third full-game suspension this season, especially coming just two weeks after his last one, is likely to mean we’ve seen the last of No. 30. … And let’s hope recruiting target Keith Marshall had the same thought Saturday that many UGA fans had: Crowell spends so much time on the sideline, for one reason or another, that if Marshall comes to Georgia he ought to have plenty of opportunity to play as a true freshman. …
Finally, here’s an unconfirmed rumor out of Athens: The seniors told Richt that if they won the SEC East they’d like the chance to wear those Nike Power Ranger uniforms again in the Georgia Dome, one source says, and he told them they could.
Now, from what I understand the SEC West representative will be the home team this year, and if it’s anyone other than LSU, that would preclude the Dogs being red. But if it’s LSU, which prefers white jerseys even at home, it could happen.
I’m hoping the rumor isn’t true, though. Sure, I think the team deserves some sort of reward for winning the East and I’m not automatically against red tops and bottoms for a special occasion. And the silver helmets weren’t awful.
But those tacky no-name jerseys worn against Boise State? Please, no!

Leave the “Power Rangers” for the comic books. I would rather make a statement by the quality of play and not those awful uniforms.

Crowell=soft, I’m not sure if you keep up, but Lattimore is gone for the season. That is what UGA is trying to avoid. They are all human….except for Richardson. It isn’t fair to bring him up.

I have no idea what is in his heart. All I know for sure about him was that he picked Georgia despite having its worst year in a long time, probably would have been a better “me” pick to go someplace else, came in and competed for the job, carried the ball for us as much as almost anyone in the SEC irrespective of class, has played through some nics and bruises, has always been polite and respectful that I am aware of, paid for a couple of mistake WAY more than he would have at any other SEC school, (and I would argue more so than past players), and seems to be willing, coachable, and talented. So based on that, I don’t assume to know anymore about him than I do.

I would note that Richardson didn’t and doesn’t play all the time. Bama’s philosophy is that running in the SEC beats these guys up and you better use a stable of horses, which they have done consistently. Ingram didn’t play hurt, either.

Crowell was the top running back in the NATION. All we are asking for is 25 carries a game and no off field problems. We get zero carries and testing positive for drug use…

I think folks need to go and actually look at how many times Crowell has carried the ball so far, as compared to Lattimore and Richardson, before they make pointless contrasts.

I agree with Belue. Crowell goes out every game with some sort of injury. He did not prepare himself for the punishment of the SEC. He shows no determination and a lazy attitude. The prema donna status he was given will not get him to the NFL. He has attitude has not shown that he was the #1 RB from high school. He does need to play with more heart and determination. Build yourself up IC and you might be a top RB in the NCAA. I have not been impressed with the way he takes himself out of the game. Injuries happen in football, but you have to play through them. Carlton Thomas needs to go. Bring in 3 RB’s this year and keep the train moving. IF they can’t get with the program, get rid of them. A big lack of discipline at the RB position and that falls on the OC and the RB coach. The change at DC did wonders for the team and now it’s time to revamp the Offensive side of the ball.

I wouldn’t give up on Crowell just yet. I have a child his same age and I can only imagine how my own would fare under the same demands, pressure and spotlight. We forget he is still basically a child. If you have children, think of your own at 17 or 18; there was/is still a lot of growing up to do.
And btw, Kool-Aid Bar, thanks a lot! Now I’m craving twinkies. At 48, I firmly believe only one can do damage but how would I know? I’ve never been able to stop at one.

I was about to state what Buck Belue said as well. Most running backs tape up a sore ankle and continue playing. That’s not only me thinking that, its the qb from the 1980 Championship team saying that. Belue knows that Herschel would have taped it up and played !

I’m so tired of Crowell the quitter. Huntin’ his free NFL ride. Harton took licks that would send I.C. cryin’ to Mamma, but stayed in. LSU will have him RACING to the sidelines, bad ankle and all while the rest of the team guts it out……you think they ain;t studdied up on the fact that this guy leaves after a hit from the water-girl?????????

How dumb is Carlton Thomas ? He was the # 2 back and would have been the # 1 back since Crowell (hanging toenail) couldn’t play against Ky. A perfect opportunity to showcase his talents to the NFL scouts. But no, he does something stupid again off the field and doesn’t play…

There’s been hundreds and probably thousands of frehmen come in and dominate in college since the 1950’s. Crowell was put on a pedestal by Rivals.com not me. He should just play up to his perceived ability.

I imagine that it was a little of both with Crowell. He wasn’t looking to play injured, and UGA could win without him. He’s been pampered this season. Fair enough. He’s immensely talented, but unseasoned and unconditioned for SEC play. Toughen him up over the off-season, and if his heart gets to the right place, he’ll still become a special player.

Hopefully, they get the right cleats for the GA dome turf this time. Several players slipped and fell early in the Boise State game and cost us at least a couple of completions and tackles. The missed completions early killed the drives.

If Crowell doesn’t get his act together and man up he won’t even see the field his jr or sr. years once Derrick Henry gets here.
I live in Jacksonville and I will tell anyone who’s within reasonable distance of Yulee, FL if you have a chance next season go see this young man play. He is worth the price of admission. He AVERAGED 300yds rushing his first 6 games this season, and just this past friday in Yulee’s playoff game he ran for 308yds 4TDs on I think 19 carries.
Check this out, if THIS doesn’t get you excited nothing will…enjoy

You can’t wear black unis at Tech because they are dark uniforms and the home team always gets the dark uniforms or actually the choice of uniform and most always chooses the darker color. People are saying to go with the pro-combat or the black unis for the SECC because IF LSU gets in they will be the home team and they prefer to wear the lighter color as the home team which would give us the opportunity to wear either the red pro-combat OR the black jerseys. In that case, I like the idea of wearing the black jerseys in honor of Larry.
