Nobody called a game like Larry Munson! (University of Georgia)
In honor of Larry Munson, longtime voice of the Georgia Bulldogs who died Sunday at age 89, here’s an excerpt from a piece I wrote in September 2009 …
No offense to Scott Howard or anyone else who ever mans a microphone for UGA football games, but in the hearts and minds of the Bulldog Nation, there’ll never be anyone who approaches the status of Larry Munson.
As coaches and players came and went, the one-of-a-kind broadcast legend was the constant in Georgia football for more than four decades and became one of the most beloved figures ever at UGA. It doesn’t usually take much prompting, either, to get Dog fans to wax nostalgic about their favorite Munson calls.
“From Herschel to a Hobnail Boot,” the memoir Munson wrote with longtime sportswriter Tony Barnhart, features Larry’s picks of his 10 favorite calls from his days in the UGA broadcast booth.
Here are the ones he picked:
1. The 2001 game in Knoxville, known forever as the “hobnail boot” call.
2. The 1980 “Run, Lindsay!” call in Jacksonville.
3. The 1975 Florida game’s Appleby-to-Washington “thinking of Montreal” call.
4. The 1980 “My God, a freshman!” call in Knoxville. (Munson says WSB got complaints about his language.)
5. The 1982 “Hunker down, you guys!” and “Look at the sugar falling out of the sky!” sequence at Auburn that kicked Munson’s legend into high gear.
6. The 1978 “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!” call of Rex Robinson’s game-winning field goal at Kentucky.
7. The 1984 win over Clemson thanks to Kevin Butler’s 60-yard field goal (”The stadium is worse than bonkers!”).
8. The 2002 pass from David Greene to Michael Johnson to beat Auburn and send Georgia to the SEC championship (”Touchdown! Oh, God, a touchdown!”).
9. The 1978 come-from-behind win over Georgia Tech (”There’s a man open! Arnold!”).
10. The call of the 1973 Andy Johnson score against the Vols that had Munson yelling, “My God! Georgia beat Tennessee in Knoxville!” He says that last call was the one that really prompted the Bulldog faithful to embrace him as one of their own.
Good times. And even better because of the way Munson described them to us.

Means so much more now. We used to not have cable an listened on the radio. I’d give up cable to have Munson back. But he’s up there with all those UGAs and likely having a cigar with Erk and worrying about the Tech Game.

Agreed, there will never be another like him. I grew up before every game was on TV so listening to Munson was the only option, and a great one it was. So many great games and great calls. No way to choose the best ones. They were all his best ones.

Some of my fondest memories of growing up in south georgia involve being in a dove field while listening to Munson describe the action on an old transistor radio.

The Kentucky call almost got me in trouble with my neighbors. We had the windows open, the wine open, and the beer flowing all evening. When Munson started yelling ” Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!” my wife started yelling and I started yelling louder and my neighbors were coming home and getting out of their cars and heard all this yelling and screaming. The next morning my neighbor stopped me and wanted to know if everything was all right. I told him “He** yeah. We beat Kentucky.” He was glad to know I was just a loud, obnoxious Dawg and not a wife beater. Only Munson could work you up into a lather like that.

As a life-long bulldog fan and now a graduate of UGA, I believe this hurts me more than any game the Dawgs ever lost. I’ll never forget all the times when I couldn’t watch the game on TV and I would be glued to the radio hanging on to every gutteral word that would come through the speakers. I am so glad that I got the opportunity to meet Larry and get his autograph on my copy of his biography that came out a few years ago. My first season as a student was in 2008 and one of my most fond memories of Larry was when they brought him out on the field at halftime of one of the games to honor him and the students and rest of the crowd were chanting his name over and over and even from the stands you could see him getting teary-eyed because I truly believe that he loved the Bulldog nation as much as we loved him. So long Larry, you will never know how much you contributed to my love of the Dawgs, but thank you for all the wonderful memories. And a side note, how about making some “sugar fall out of the sky” for our Dawgs the next two weeks?

I remember growing up in small town GA in the late ’70’s to early ’80’s. I would have the Bulldogs blaring outside on the radio and people who lived further down the road would have their radio on and the whole neighborhood was filled with Larry Munson calling the games while we kids played football. I will always hold those memories dear. Mr. Munson, RIP. Prayers to your family. Now let’s hunker down and win the SEC!

1997: Georgia 27, Georgia Tech 24. Mike Bobo to Allen with 8 seconds left, after they had scored just 40 seconds earlier. Larry’s call of that play is my absolute favorite– “Oh my, oh it couldn’t have happened!!” Scott Howard was incoherently screaming in the background, and Larry closed with “Michigan State had rocked Penn State 49-7 but nothing has rocked like this one. Nothing. Has. Rocked. Like This One.” I’ve looked everywhere for audio of that call; hopefully I can find it somewhere.
I was 9 years old and watching the game with my dad– that moment hooked me for life. Thanks Larry for all the memories and RIP.

Like other Dawg fans in their 50’s, I grew up when Georgia games on TV were a rarity. So my picture of the Bulldogs was drawn by Larry, as I “got the picture”. So many great memories listening to Larry’s calls on the radio driving in the car, while I raked leaves and pinestraw, as I watched the game on TV, or maybe as I went to bed as a little kid. Nobody drew the picture any better, used more colorful descriptions, or described the action with any more passion than Larry. Scott Howard does a great job, but there will never be another Larry – a true ONE OF A KIND…

November 2002. Like a nut, I decided to see some high school basketball instead of watch the annual festivities with Auburn. Not just that, I decided to go see high school basketball in Statenville. Yes, unincorporated Statenville, where they having a little season tip-off tournament.
I took a radio and headphones with me, but it was quite difficult to pick up a broadcast from a small gymnasium in an unincorporated town in a county without a stoplight. (They did have wonderful chicken tenders, though.)
At halftime of an inevitable sweep of our participation in the tournament, I decided to leave. We’re beaten, Georgia’s getting beaten. Find your car in the entirely grass parking lot and go home.
Right outside the gym, that’s when I heard it.
TOUCHDOWN! IN THE CORNER!
The details soon came through. David Greene had found Michael Johnson. In the corner.
I danced in the grass.
In Statenville.
Michael Johnson has caught a touchdown pass.
In the corner.
We have beaten Auburn.
There is no traffic on GA 135, which is a very good thing, especially when you want to see with your eyes what you have seen through your ears via Munson’s. In the corner.

My favorite and with Old Fashion Hate this weekend:
We got the ball right down where it was. Only 16 seconds for 8 yards. We got 4 men split out, the ones to the right are kind of wide, Stafford pointing at the defense, our center. Shotgun Bobo, bobo going to take and look, throw in the corner, and TOUCHDOWN, A touchdown in the corner… oh, it couldnt have happened!!

In 2002 my mom, sister and I travelled up to at. Simons island from our home in Jacksonville Florida to watch the game with my granddad, who had a bad cold at the time. We were losing the whole game, everyone was down, and while we had the game on the tv, we had Larry on the radio too, and he was right there with us. Me laying on the floor in agony, fretting over our inability to move the ball, my mom couldn’t even listen, and my granddad on the couch rubbing his forehead with each incompletion. But Sean jones’ big plays gave us a spark. We had hope, and 70x takeoff took us to the championship game. At ten years old I had already been to many games and knew all about Larry and the history, but that game stands out. Larry was right there with us in that small condo on st. Simons island, and we loved him for it. Rest in peace Larry, you Wil be missed in the bulldawg nation.

I don’t remember the game, I think it was Tech. But we were on the game winning drive and Larry say after a run that “the ball is 8 inches in front of the twenty yard line and the back of the ball is 4 inches behind the line.” He said, “I’m sorry if I’m getting technical, but I’m getting superstitious!”
I knew that he knew how I felt watching the game. He was agonizing as much as I was. That’s exactly what you want from your announcer. You want him to love your team as much as you do.

I am deeply saddened. The voice of Georgia Bulldog football is now silent forever. Mr Larry Munson was not only a professional of the highest caliber but was one of the staunchest of all Dawg gridiron fans. I always felt like Mr Munson was hurt more by Dawg losses than I was. Now that is a true fan who lives and dies with the team. The voice of Mr Munson was unique. There was no doubt who was calling the shots for the Dawgs over the radio airways. Mr Munson called the impossible dream for the Dawgs against Florida which kept Dawg national championship hopes alive. So what if the announcer fell out of his chair? That rally was something worth falling out of a chair for! One of my favorite artists of all time is official Dawg football illustrator Mr Jack Davis. When Mr Davis reveals his memorial for Mr Munson will the AJC please share it with readers? I am still in shock. I cannot believe Mr Munson is gone. The voice of Georgia Bulldog football got to make the calls for one legitimate Dream Team in 1980. One can only hope he smiles knowingly from above as another Dream Team attempts to fulfil its destiny against tremendous odds. LSU, Alabama and Arkansas are excellent football programs but they are all lacking in one important aspect. None of them ever had Mr Munson! Rest in peace dearest friend. I love you. All of the Dawg Nation does.

I knew Munson was special in the 80’s when a Clemson fan in Easley SC told me he would listen to Munson during Clemson/Dawg games rather than his own announcer… He always laughed that Munson would create a “larger than life” player on the opposing team to scare us all to death.. Once he said Munson said their Nosetackle (The Fridge) was 500lbs and 6′ 9″ in size and “how are we gonna be able to block ‘em”???

If I were a wealthy man instead of one of the poorest of all I would commission Georgia football illustrator Mr Jack Davis to produce a drawing of Mr Larry Munson falling out of his broadcast booth chair during his description of the Georgia-Florida 1980 showdown. It would be on prominent display at my home as long as I lived. It would be worth far more to me than any Rembrandt or Van Gough. I know most true Bulldog fans feel the same way. Rest in peace Mr Munson. You are missed. That welp you heard was from Russ. He misses you too.

Bill, maybe you can help me with one of my favorite Munson calls. I beieve it was 1974 and the UF games wasn’t on TV. I remember hearing Larry’s voice rising in excitement as Glenn Harrison was returning either a kickoff or punt. The hair rose on my arm as the run played out. He ran it for a TD but it was called back because of a penalty. Munson said it was an unbelieveable run and he estimated Harrison ran about 150 yards total zigzagging back on forth. I would love to hear that again, but it won’t make anyone’s “top” list because the play was called back.

For me it was the Auburn game in ‘82 with the “Sugar Falling from the sky”. I was a freshman in 1980 who graduated in ‘84. Lucky me. Back in those days only 2 or 3 games a year were televised and that usually included a bowl game. Somehow the deciding game for the SEC Champion featuring Heisman trophy favorite Herschel Walker wasn’t televised! Lucky me again in retrospect. I was home from school working out with weights in our basement that afternoon listening to Larry implore the Dawgs to “Hunker Down one more time!”. It’s a testament to Larry that considering how many great games I went to during that great run it was his call of that game on the radio thath stands out as vividly as anything I can remember from those days.

Just stuff like, “He picked up two, two and a half, three yards…”
Or…
“Third down and a LONG three, three and a half yards…and those big, I mean HUGE linemen they have over there that we’re trying to block…”
Of course, we’ll never forget, “Loran, whadaya got?” And how sometimes it sounded like he was a little annoyed…like Loran was buzzin him or somethin’.
Not just the “great” calls but his calls the whole game. And I tell ya something else…we HATE the delay between radio and TV! Otherwise, we’d ALL be listening to Larry.
PS…Best wishes to Loran…we know you’re grieving big time.

When I was in my youth and I would play in the the back woods behind our house, late in the evening my mother would come out to the back porch and yell “come home son it’s time for supper”. Even though I could not see her I knew exactly who it was and where she was and what I wouldn’t give to here her voice once more. Even though we can’t see you Larry we know exactly who you were and where you are. Say hi to mom for me Larry.

Eeery things is I can remember exactly where I was on most of those calls. There are times now when I can’t remember what I had for breakfast.
Cuz, God be with you and your Daughter too. I’ve got a “perfectly beautiful” 5 year old and I’m going through round two in life. Whenever I hear of someone going through difficult times with a child I count the blessings we have “right now”. You never know how long they are going to last. I appreciate things so much more now than I used to.

I live in Tennessee and I am not a UGA fan, but driving through Atlanta one year, I was listening to Munson. I have never heard anyone mention this call because it was more of a conversation…..it cracked me up at the time. I believe UGA was playing Vandy and a Vandy received had just scored and knelt in the end zone in prayer. He was flagged for excessive celebration and Munson was incredulous. Loran Smith commented saying something like ‘as a Baptist, I think you should pray in your prayer closet’….and Munson said something to the effect of ‘my God, now you want to build closets in the end zone!!!’ I have probably got a lot of the details wrong, and I apologise, but Munson’s bewilderment regarding what Loran was talking about was priceless.

NONE of my favorite calls by Larry are listed in the blog, however, I do offer my condolences to all of the Dawg nation for the loss of a great voice. While my opinions conflicted with Larry Munson, I could ALWAYS appreciate his passion for his team! Rest in Peace Larry Munson….you’re a Damn Good Dawg!

The one I will always remember “My God, a freshman!” I had just returned from Okinawa, Japan where I had been stationed for 3 long years and not being able to listen to him calling the games of my beloved Dawgs on the radio. I hadn’t even heard of Herschel Walker until that night in Knoxville when we came from behind and beat Tennessee 16-15. I also remember 1966 when he called the Auburn game when Dooley won his first SEC Championship. He was the best at painting a picture of the action of a game and YOU being able to see it in your mind. Yes I am a Dawg as I played there but Larry Munson was the consumate “Dam Good Dawg”. Rest in peace my friend, May our FATHER YAHWEH and our Lord and Savior Jesus keep in you in their loving arms forevermore.

The first Munson classic I remember was the ‘75 “Appleby to Washington.”
We were in the cages at Tucker HS, with the game blaring on the radio. When that play happened, and Larry said “the girders are bending” – I was on the floor, struggling to catch my breath after having screamed so loud and so long I almost passed out.

I listened to Larry every game since 1966 except one, the one when we played Bama on national tv when Dooley was still coaching. I went to Maine with my ex-wife’s family on Labor day weekend, i figured at least i’d get to listen to Larry on the radio. First, i was mad that the dumb yankees tv network up there deleted the game to play music videos, then i ran out to listen to Larry on the car radio and couldn’t pick up WSB at all. The Maine family thought it was so funny that i was so p.o’d but i told them “If I could hear Larry i would care less about the tv.” The next morning i walked to store to get the score (We lost)in the paper. (a 6 word comment in the sport page)I belive the proper way to honor this fantastic gentleman who bled red and black is to get a petition together and name the stadium Sanford-Munson Stadium now! I believe it was 1997, UGA at Kentucky, and Kentucky, after driving downfield late in the fourth, setting up for an easy game-winning FG, botched the snap and Georgia wins.
Munson: “Where did she come from, where did she come from?” Dramatic pause. “Lady Luck!!! We’d been waiting all game!!!”
The man was a kind of artist, he didn’t just call the game, he interpreted it, he brought it to life, gave it an aura of drama and pathos that was utterly unique.

I love all of those calls. I particularly enjoyed his references to Old Lady Luck, particularly when Sean Jones returned Jabar Davis’s fumble for a 97-yard TD against Tennessee. “They were gonna run a sweep with him… (he) dropped the ball. Old lady luck just laughed out loud right there! Holy Smokes!” I also am fond of Chuck Carswell’s interception against Alabama in 1990 “to save our fannies” and “Carswell fell on his whatchamacallit.”

I often said I was Munson was Munson wasn’t cool. I used to have an 8 track recording of his games from the early 70s I played on my dates. They thought I was crazy. My most memorable moments were obscure games no one remembers, Ga-Auburn in 71. His first comments, they’ve been roaring since 6 this morning on the bridge. Ga-Alabama 72, Look at Erk pleading with his defense to stop the TIde, Ga-Auburn(the greatest game he ever called in 1978 when they ended up tied 22-22). Cribbs and Brooks had 400 yards in the first half alone. Johnny Henderson’s brillant tackle in the Florida game. My greatest moment, sitting with him in Memphis Tennessee at Halftime of the State High School Championship game and he was shocked someone knew who he was. We hooked up again in Jax in 1989 at the Omni International. THe commute to Atlanta was awesome with him and Kathy Fishman on WSB>…..Remember him describing the Ninja Turtles movie….broadcasting a fake liftoff of the Space Shuttle…twisting at the right tackle and he stumbles forward for six yards…..Ga-Fla 1976 on the Flight Deck of the USS JFK broadcasted around the world on Armed Forces radio…the 2nd half made him a legend…..I;ve missed him terrible since 2008…..A part of me will be forever missing now.
