Best thing to come out of California in years: Jarvis Jones

Jarvis Jones: The Beast of the East! (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Jarvis Jones: The Beast of the East! (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

A few more random thoughts in the wake of Georgia taking the SEC East title. …

Week in, week out I don’t think there’s any doubt who’s been the player of the year for the SEC East champions: Jarvis Jones.

Against the Cats, Jones, who transferred to Georgia from Southern Cal after the staff there decided an injury had made him no longer fit to play, had another 2.5 sacks, giving him a conference-leading 12.5 for the season. The former Trojan also forced the fumble that set up Georgia’s only touchdown.

LSU may have its Honey Badger, but Georgia has the Beast of the East. Thank you, USC! …

Some Georgia fans, including former quarterback Buck Belue, are wondering why Isaiah Crowell didn’t attempt to return to the game Saturday with a taped up ankle if, as Mark Richt said Sunday, he’s expected to be ready to play against Georgia Tech.

As Buck put it in his blog: “Must have been more than a tweak, right? How could a competitor sit there and watch his offense struggle like that, if it were just a tweak? Got to figure a competitor would have felt the urge to tape it up tight and go. Tough it out. So, his ankle must be hurting … or he’s just not that much of a competitor. And if it’s hurt that bad, how could he be ready to go on Saturday against Georgia Tech? Just saying.”

Of course, there’s another possible explanation: The Dogs didn’t absolutely need Crowell to return to the game in order to beat Kentucky, and so the coaching staff elected to keep him safely on the sideline.

I don’t know which it was, but, judging from the conservative playcalling (ranging from vanilla runs up the middle to not going for a field goal on fourth down late in the fourth quarter), it looked to me like Mike Bobo and Richt decided the defense was playing well enough to win and there was no need to take any further risks on offense.

As Bobo said after the game, “We did enough to win.” …

Two more thoughts on the subject of running backs: Richt was still mum Sunday on Carlton Thomas’ future but you’ve got to figure that, unless there are some extenuating circumstances, a third full-game suspension this season, especially coming just two weeks after his last one, is likely to mean we’ve seen the last of No. 30. … And let’s hope recruiting target Keith Marshall had the same thought Saturday that many UGA fans had: Crowell spends so much time on the sideline, for one reason or another, that if Marshall comes to Georgia he ought to have plenty of opportunity to play as a true freshman. …

Finally, here’s an unconfirmed rumor out of Athens: The seniors told Richt that if they won the SEC East they’d like the chance to wear those Nike Power Ranger uniforms again in the Georgia Dome, one source says, and he told them they could.

Now, from what I understand the SEC West representative will be the home team this year, and if it’s anyone other than LSU, that would preclude the Dogs being red. But if it’s LSU, which prefers white jerseys even at home, it could happen.

I’m hoping the rumor isn’t true, though. Sure, I think the team deserves some sort of reward for winning the East and I’m not automatically against red tops and bottoms for a special occasion. And the silver helmets weren’t awful.

But those tacky no-name jerseys worn against Boise State? Please, no!

Forget those fugly Pro Combat uniforms.

I wouldn’t mind black britches, black jerseys, or maybe a silver helmet that DOESNT have the huge, red stripe going all the way down the facemask. I mean…until the 1960s the Dawgs did have silver lids.

As i watched Sat i wondered as well if the coaches simply believed that we would be better served taking IC off and not risking him, but as the O struggled i just did not see it that way. I have coached high school football for 14 years now and actually have 2 outstanding young men who suit up in the Red and Black between the hedges. I wonder if IC needs to learn the difference between INJURED and HURT? Hope i am wrong but as i tell my guys sometimes you hurt and you tough it out for the team (Ice and Advil) now injury well it is what it is, treat it and heal and get back on the horse.

I think it was the right call to keep crowell on the bench! We beat Kentucky without him if he was hurt how bad would it have looked if they sent him out their and he injured it more than it was and we lost him for the next 3 games?

I’m very proud of this years team.

If they want to wear a uniform which 18-22 year olds find awesome, and us older folks think is “nontraditional”, by all means they have earned the right to shut us up.

GO DAWGS!!!

I hated those uniforms, ugly, ugly, ugly !! Sure the players deserve some type of reward for turning around the season, but tell them they can wear those uniforms if they make it to the Sugar Bowl. In other words, if they win the SEC Chanpionship Game.

I think winning the SEC East, the SEC or a BCS bowl game should give the players the option to wear some special threads. But keep some tradition. Special pants, or special jerseys, or special helmets, sure, but not all three at once. You get to pick one. I shouldn’t turn on the TV and say “Who in the heck is that?”
And I’d love some red pants on the road, a la 1980 in Knoxville. But red pants and red jerseys isn’t a good look, as 9.3.11 demonstrated.
Beat Tech! Go Dawgs!

Jarvis really steped it up when tree got back in the game! Every one on the defense is playing at such a high level it’s hard to focus on just one guy to scheme around as a opposing offense.
I saw were Jarvis said he gives all the credit to granthem that granthem made him who he his by coaching him how to play…….
I’m not one to bash bobo but I would love to here that from some offensive guys and see the offense play as consistent as the defense.

Congrats CMR and staff. What a remarkable achievement to keep this team focused and over coming the 0-2 start. A lot of the media was predicting that if UGA lost those first 2 games, the team would quit on CMR and go into a ditch. Way to pull it together guys.

Let’s hope the rumor is false. Those dorky uniforms are the W O R S T! Downright stinkin’ ugly.

But if that’s what the seniors desire, this team’s certainly earned a reward, so give ‘em what they want.

Great news on Jarvis and company. And if Crowell wants to be a prima donna, Harton did fine.

“As of Sunday, Todd Fuhrman, the senior race and sports analyst for Caesars Entertainment in Las Vegas, projected that Alabama would be favored by 12 points, LSU by 10.5 points and Arkansas by 5 points in potential matchups against Georgia on Dec. 3 in the Georgia Dome.”

Are you kidding?? Folks, stop dropping money on lottery tickets. Here’s your chance to get rich quick: take the SEC West Champion and give the points. Dawgs lose by 20+.

Holy Crap! Are you all kidding me? Power Rangers!? Blackout!??? Please! All the dawgs need to do is focus on their jobs and the gameplan for the next two weeks. The LAST thing they need is another uniform gimmick. If the players and fans need new unis to get excited about the upcoming games, then we have lost sight of what’s important and what’s at stake. What short-term memory loss we all have! Just stick to the traditional unis and play some damn football! GT and the SECCG-that’s what excites me!

Sorry the other posts got me sidetracked from the original story. Jarvis Jones is an outstanding football player. I’m glad to hear he’s coming back next year. He is one of the most outstanding defensive players to ever play for UGA. A hard working team player who should add some tremendous accolades to his professional resume’ next year.

Canton, I heard the same thing about Larry Munson…If it is true, I am very sad to hear he news…A big part of my childhood, before there were 20 games on TV, and you mostly caught the games on the radio in the garage, while your dad and the neighbor hung out and drank beer…

Crowell has a low pain tolerance, he will have a difficult time in the SEC and certainly in the Pro’s. Do hope we are able to sign a durable running back this year. Shame that Richard Samuel got hurt. Do not think Thomas has the character to play on our team. I’m a traditionalist when it comes to uniforms. I love this Team and have always supported Coach Richt!

When Ga. was about to play Alabama in 2008 everyone was consumed with playing in black jerseys.
I remember Coach Stallings remarking on the radio that Ga. should be consumed with blocking and tackling, not on their attire. If we don’t remember history, we are doomed to repeat it.

I remember watching another player help Crowell walk off the field at half time. He was not able to put much weight on his foot. he looked in no condition to play the rest of the game and I am worried he may not be ready for Tech. To all the haters, their is a reason you are typing and not on the field or a former player. You couldn’t and can’t do what we ask these kids to do. You can criticize the play, but demanding a hurt kid go back in and chance a career ending injury is selfish and stupid. Players want to play, but they also know when they can’t. Hope Crowell gets better. You have asked a lot of a Freshman.

We will miss you Munson. You were the Damn Good Dawg.
