Should Russ be named official mascot? (University of Georgia)
Saturday’s game against Kentucky is the last chance to see the Dogs play Between the Hedges this season and a limited number of unclaimed UGA student tickets went on sale to the general public Thursday morning. If you’d like the chance to see Georgia try to clinch the SEC East in person, Georgiadogs.com has the details.
Now, let’s get to some Junkyard Mail. …
Brady Johnson writes: I heard one of the guys on the post-game radio show speculate after the Auburn game that if Georgia wins the SEC Championship that Russ will earn full “mascot” status and be buried inside Sanford Stadium with his forebears when he goes on to that great fireplug in the sky. Since it’s pretty obvious the new Uga isn’t going to be introduced this season, what do you think is the likelihood of that?
I don’t know if Russ will ever be declared on official mascot, but if Georgia wins an SEC championship on his watch I think he certainly deserves to be acknowledged inside Sanford Stadium. I think it would be a great idea for him to be buried with the Ugas, but if that doesn’t come to pass he at least ought to get a plaque or some other permanent honor. Even Mike, the predecessor to the Uga line, is honored with a statue (in front of Memorial Hall). Russ deserves no less.
Brian Stewart writes: I know most of the praise this year is going towards the defense (and rightfully so) for this run the Dawgs are making. My question is why the offensive surprises, like the strong O-line play and phenomenal play of the wide receivers, has gone largely under the radar?
Well, I’m not sure you can say they’re going under the radar any longer, but the answer probably is that the injury-plagued offensive line progressed slowly and the wide receivers are mostly very young. There’s still room for improvement with the OL, but coach Will Friend has done a terrific job with very little depth. As for the receiving corps, the sparkplugs there have been a terrific batch of freshmen who certainly are on the radar now.
Beach Dawg Living Happily Among Gators writes: Bill, It is obvious that the 2011 “Dream Team” recruiting class has made significant contributions to the Dawgs’ success this year. I found it very surprising that UGA was able to have that much success after the dismal 2010 season capped by a very embarrassing bowl loss. The opposite seems to be happening this year — very good season, so far, but Coach Richt does not seem to be attracting the top in-state players. Your thoughts?
As our recruiting expert Michael Carvell notes, Georgia’s recruiting efforts had to weather an 0-2 start and lots of speculation about the head coach’s future but are beginning to gain some momentum and the Dogs are in the running for some highly rated players. Just as it was too early to write off this season after the first two games, don’t dismiss Richt’s 2012 recruiting efforts until we see which players he lands.
Kelly from Buford writes: Junkyard, do you know the status of Kolton Houston? I heard rumors of a NCAA investigation and noticed he hasn’t been dressed out. It would be nice to have him in the mix with the loss of Dallas Lee.
Houston has been unable to play because of an unspecified “NCAA issue,” according to Richt. There’s been no official word, but at this point it looks like Houston won’t be available until next season (hopefully).
Rontavius Smith writes: Hey Bill, seeing how the Dawgs have improved greatly under [Todd] Grantham, I believe he deserves to get a big increase to his pay and to give him a contract extension when they give Richt one. I believe when a team is doing well that it’s not [right] for all the credit to go the head coach because success is achieved by a team and right now the team has the coaches and players to do big things. In your opinion why wouldn’t UGA do everything in their means to keep Grantham?
I’m sure Richt and athletic director Greg McGarity want to keep Grantham and will do whatever is reasonable to keep him. He’s already one of the most highly paid assistants around but a raise after this season would seem likely. And possibly an extension, assuming Richt gets one, too. But if his agent isn’t just blowing smoke and Grantham really does have NFL defensive coordinator or college head coach offers on the table, it’ll ultimately come down to what direction he wants to take his career. A personal choice, in other words, not just money. Frankly, though, it sounds like a negotiating ploy.
Jax Dawg writes: Do you think Drew Butler’s punting struggles have come with the new punting protection formation that UGA is using this year? I’m by no means a special teams expert, but it seems that with the three defenders directly in front of Drew he is not taking his usual steps before he punts it away.
I’d say it’s doubtful the formation is the problem. Butler punted well for most of the season and has only recently had a couple of off games. And let’s not forget that the one blocked punt came when the Dogs weren’t using that maximum protection formation. I think more likely the recent shanked punts are a concentration problem on his part that he can fix.
Matthew Cafaro writes: Bill, the people who said Richt needed this WHOLE season to see if his new decisions and appointments would work out were right. That still does not erase the fact that Richt’s success as a head coach is extremely dependent on having not only a competent defensive coordinator, but one who is the yin to his yang. So, let’s say Georgia wins the SEC next year and contends for a BCS Championship, two possible scenarios, and Todd Grantham leaves to become a DC in the NFL or a CFB head coach. Good for him, of course, as he saved Richt’s job just as sure as [Brian Van Gorder] had a huge hand in Richt’s early success. If that scenario presents itself, will Richt make the same mistakes of the past, coming off a successful season? Will he promote from within, someone who is not qualified to be a DC? Someone who is NOT the fiery, passionate DC this team needs to balance Richt’s cool, even temper? I can’t say I trust a “fat and happy” Richt to make the right decision. An “under fire” Richt made decisions to save his job. … Does a comfortable Richt make those same kind of “out of the box” decisions when he needs to replace the man who saved his job?
If Grantham leaves, I’d be surprised if Richt didn’t look outside the program for a similar replacement. He’s a smart man and I think he recognizes the same factors that you cite. In the past, I think his judgement in promoting Willie Martinez was colored by their close friendship.
Eddie Whitaker writes: Hi Bill, love your work! My question is regarding our QB situation. Currently we have [Aaron] Murray, [Hutson] Mason and [Christian] LeMay. Sounds like (if recruiting holds true) we have Brice Ramsey coming in and then “the next Tim Tebow” [Faton Bauta] who just committed for 2013. Do you see LeMay transferring? We will soon have quite a logjam at the QB spot.
No, I doubt LeMay is going anywhere. If any of Georgia’s quarterbacks transfers, it most likely will be Mason, though that’s by no means a foregone conclusion. Mason also could take a redshirt year in order to create some class separation. But if he stays and plays next season I think it’ll be a terrific battle for the No. 2 spot and his experience will give him the edge over LeMay, who missed his senior year of high school football.
Jon Wilhoit writes: Bill, always enjoy your work. In order for the Dawgs to continue to resurrect to the expected level of competitiveness, Isaiah Crowell has to make a statement, a claim, to the role of “every-down SEC tailback”. He has flashes of promise. He makes rookie mistakes. Those are the edges of the issue. If he cannot carry the ball for an entire drive, if he cannot become more effective as the game wears on … he will be just another back. And, it will be no one’s fault but his own. He has the tool. Does he have the heart?
I think he’s getting there. He’s been playing banged up and has had to get used to that but Crowell said this week that he knows staying in the game is “what I haven’t been doing well” and he’s trying to improve. Richt noted this week that in the Auburn game Crowell didn’t ask to come out, unlike earlier games. Early in the season, the coach said, “he’d run one or two and then he’d come out. Then he’d go back in and then he’d run a couple more and then he’d come out. This last game he wanted to keep getting it.” Richt attributes that to Crowell’s stamina improving. As that happens, I think No. 1 will reach his full potential.
Alex Richards writes: Great to see the fellows put 4 quarters of complete football together against a legitimate opponent. While the Dogs need to keep playing well to clinch and beat the trade school, I hope this quiets all the haters out there calling for a new coach. Not only is Richt first class, he is a solid, solid football coach. Yes, the program dipped but his leadership has held steady throughout. He’s worked through a myriad of issues on field and off, given support, encouragement and rope to his coordinators and it’s paying off. Most importantly, he and his staff have recruited better in the last couple of years and it’s paying dividends. Players matter more than coaches. Look at Auburn from a year ago. What are they now? What are they without Cam and Fairley last year — average at best. Look at invincible Nick Saban and Alabama. When they met LSU who could match up athlete to athlete what happened? Look at Florida this year. All I’ve heard is what a great d-coordinator Will Muschamp is. Not so much this year. His o-coordinator is one of the most gifted offensive minds football has ever seen. Florida’s offense was pitiful this year. PLAYERS MATTER MORE THAN COACHES. Watching our team right now, it’s obvious that our players are more talented than most SEC teams (minus Alabama and LSU). I’m tired of hearing how a guy like Kirby Smart is the “answer” to Georgia’s woes. He may be a fine head coach one day, but I for one think that hiring a guy like that is a lot more risky than letting a guy like Mark Richt do his job. I’m telling you, I could coach for Nick Saban, run Hightower and Upshaw and that secondary out there and get some impressive results too. I’m not slamming Smart. Just asking the Bulldog Nation to let a great man and great coach lead our program for many years to come. Get united behind this guy, what looks to be a pretty good staff and some talented YOUNG players that are about to make it to the SEC Championship Game! Go Dawgs!
You make an excellent point. Even great coaches falter if they don’t have the right mix of talent on the field. Richt’s Dream Team signing class was a big step in the right direction.
Jason Bledsoe writes: Bill, I really enjoy reading your blog and your knowledge of the Georgia football team. This 2011 bunch has accomplished something that has been done since Herschel Walker was running between the hedges. They have beaten Florida, Auburn, and Tennessee for the first time since 1982. If we beat Kentucky how do you like our chances in the SEC championship game? I think it will be a heck of a game whether it is LSU or Alabama, our defense can play with anybody and our offense has more fire power than both LSU and Alabama. Go Dawgs.
Whoever represents the SEC West in the championship game probably will be favored, but if Georgia continues to play like they did against Auburn I think the Dogs could make it a terrific game, especially if the defense has a good outing. That would be the key in my mind, because I believe Georgia could move the ball and score against just about anyone right now.
Toby Carmichael writes: I have just one question. Where is all the negativity that you expressed about the Dawgs at the first of the season? Maybe another one. WHERE ARE ALL WONDERFUL FAIR WEATHER FANS THAT WERE CALLING FOR A GREAT COACH TO BE FIRED?
OK, let’s be straight on this: I wasn’t one of those fans calling for Richt to be fired. And I think you misrepresent me in your reference to “all the negativity.” I certainly pointed out problems throughout the season, but after the opening loss to Boise, when others were ready to write off the season, I wrote: “As I was trudging back to the car Saturday night with my wife and brothers, we found ourselves doing something that ran counter to the general mood of the evening: accentuating the positive. That long touchdown pass to true freshman Malcolm Mitchell was a thing of beauty, as he turned on the afterburners, catching the perfectly thrown ball from Murray in stride. That young man is going to be a Georgia football hero before very much time has passed. We also noted what a fine performance transfer linebacker Jarvis Jones turned in. And while tailback Isaiah Crowell’s debut was nowhere near Marcus Lattimore standards, he showed flashes of what is surely to come. So if you want to throw up your hands and declare this another ‘lost’ season on the basis of one game that Georgia really had very little chance of winning, go right ahead. I prefer to think about the blur that was Mitchell as he literally blew past Boise defenders. The story of the 2011 Georgia Bulldogs still has many chapters yet to be written.”
And after the loss to South Carolina I wrote: “Most of the Georgia fans I’ve encountered actually came away from the South Carolina game feeling encouraged by what they saw — a promising team that fought hard, didn’t give up, and which lost mainly because of mistakes, not lack of effort or talent.”
As the Dogs have cut out the mistakes and the young talent has begun to mature, success has come. There’s a big difference between “negativity” and realistic appraisals, which is what I try to offer here.
Brandon Giddens writes: Hey Bill, what are the odds of Georgia vs. Boise State in a bowl game. I would love to see what Georgia can do against them now that we are on a roll, and have ton’s more confidence and game experience. Great Blawg and GO DAWGS!!!
I don’t think a rematch between Georgia and Boise State in a bowl game is very likely. But if it somehow were to happen, as I wrote last week, I think the Dogs would do much better against the Broncos than they did in the Georgia Dome opener. The defense has improved considerably since then and the offense has gotten on track. It’d be a good game.

When did jorts become a Gator thang? (Jacksonville.com)
Luci writes: Dear Mr. King, LOVE your column. I regularly read it on Facebook. Will you please explain the issue about jean shorts? I am a 2nd generation UGA alum living in Central Florida with my husband (Volunteer fan, not alum) and our two sons who are 3rd generation UGA legacies. It is challenging to raise little Bulldogs here in Florida and I am careful to never, ever dress them in orange and blue together. They listen to the Redcoat CD regularly and are learning all the cheers (ages 2 & 4). The older one went to the Coastal Carolina game this year. I digress. Besides not dressing my boys in orange, I also refuse to put them into jean shorts and am just curious of the real story, as I have no clue. I had no luck with google. If you ever have the time, will you please explain the jean shorts thing? Thank you again for all your stories. They are awesome and I so enjoy getting news on the Dawgs! Sic ‘em!
Well, the main thing with jean shorts, or “jorts,” is that they’re awfully silly looking. I remember first seeing them on some elements of the NASCAR audience and I’m not sure exactly when they started to be associated with Florida Gators fans, but it became the pejorative of choice for Georgia fans traveling to Jacksonville mainly in the past decade. By the way, congratulations on keeping your children out of orange and blue, surely the most obnoxious of all color combinations in sports!

What a bunch of crap Bill- go back and read your own blogs dude. At least man up and admit it- many felt the same I am sure. To write crap like that only further erodes any sense that you are no more than an average fair weather fan. Just because you’ve been around “supporting” the Dawgs (and I use that term loosly- many have that same take on you), doesnt make you any sort of expert on anything- except you write a blog for the AJC (and that isnt anything worth jumping up and down about)

Bill, you may not have called for Richt’s ouster, but you certainly lambasated Bobo a few times, more than was warrented in my opinion. Our offense has consistently been one of the best in the league under Bobo, and although I am seemingly in the huge minority, I think Bobo is an excellent offensive mind, QB coach, and play caller. I wish you would lighten up on him a little bit.

“OK, let’s be straight on this: I wasn’t one of those fans calling for Richt to be fired.”
I’ll admit that I WAS one of those fans, and I think deservedly so. It’s not just the underachievement in ‘08 or the down years in ‘09 and ‘10, it was the atmosphere that surrounded the team and the soft play. It was the inability to compete with Florida team, including some pretty average Florida teamms. I think call’s for Richt’s job were well-deserved.
But I said earlier in the year that I hope he proves me wrong, and he’s done just that. It helps to have a really good defensive coordinator, and that’s a hiring decision. It looks like Richt’s choice of Grantham has panned out, so kudos to Richt for recovering from the Martinez debacle.
I wish Richt nothing but the best going forward.

As for the jean shorts, or “jorts” question, since I grew up for awhile in North Florida, let me take a stab at it: Jorts are tacky and an indication of a complete lack of sophistication, on most people. Really gorgeous girls can get away with it, but most people can’t. Particularly a young man with a blonde mullet, starter moustache, and an orange and blue muscle-T to go along with the jorts. Add a Marlboro in one hand and a Natural Light in the other and imagine the voice of Boomhauer on King of the Hill, and the picture is complete. If you’ve ever spent much time in Florida, you’ve seen quite a few of those characters.

Just think of the possibilities if Dawgs would have kept louisville on the schedule and we were able to get some things worked out against a lesser team. Starting against a team with so many seniors they were playing at mid-seson form on opening day. No telling if we would have had so many errors agains SC. Not sure if it was such a wise decesion.

On another note, it’s nice to see our play-calling break free from some of the predictable templates we’ve been using for 2 seasons. Kevin Butler commented that he believes Coach Bobo became more aggressive after all of Blair Walsh’s field goal struggles (starting with Florida). GO DAWGS!

jeff, if just finding a legit replacement is your beef, any number of folks could have found some very fine replacements the day after Uga passed. Including Seiler…….(which he did with Russ)
OBVIOUSLY the issue is finding the right combination of traits for that “job” specifically FROM the UGA bloodline that is available right now.
If Seiler is dropping the ball (and has the best access to the line) WHO on earth is going to solve that quicker?

One thing kind of makes me crazy. When UGA was 0-2 and folks were calling for Richt’s head, all you heard was “let the season play out!”. Now, those folks are saying, “see, I told you so” but, guess what, the season hasn’t played out. What if UGA loses to UK? What if they beat UK, lose to GT, get smashed by LSU (or whoever) and lose the bowl game? Would another 5 loss year be good?

As someone that grew up in the J-ville area in the 80s those were some great games and times. It was a different tailback racking up 100+ yards every season against the Gators. I feel the winner of the UGA-UF game comes down to the team able to commit to running the ball or having the most success every season. If UGA had pulled out the 2010 version then that would have been one of the weird few instances where the team throwing it all over the place won. That is what made Dooleys teams so great and has made this team in 2011 one game away from the SECCG is their commitment to the run IMHO.
WDE does have a point though on a national scale. UF was always the school getting in trouble or underachieving until Spurrier came in and woke them up. That is why I always have to laugh at these UF posters that talk about the last 20 years but then have memory loss on the 70+ years of games prior to 1990. UGA is still 8 games up after losing 18 of 22 so heading into 1990 this series was a joke of a series like vs teams like a Vandy for UGA where they led the lizards by 22 GAMES. So UF has now at least made this a competitive series thanks to the past 20 years but it took something this lopsided just to make it a series. That number will go back up as UGA starts putting it to UF here in the upcoming seasons as long as they commit to the running game.

Thanks for these type of blogs were you respond to ?’s. I find them interesting on how others feel or ?’s they ask.
I agree that Russ should have recognition, too, but I think he should become the permanent mascot. He seems to be well acclimated to the stadium environment, seems his family is ok w/Russ being the mascot, and overall appears to be a healthy bulldog. I remember reading S. Seiler saying the mascot didn’t have to be all white by any rule.
I do read and know that there are “Richt haters” out there. However, I, as well as most others i believe, are/were Richt criticizers. Not wanting him to be fired but definitely observing the decisions and quotes made/said as very puzzling. Such as sticking w/offensive coord. that had the most bland/very predictable game plan no matter which team being played. Stating he had more time to study football when we saw the exact same team look/gameplan, still have clock management issues/use of time outs at odd times. Also, talking up the improvements in team/physical conditioning and the team (defense especially) looked gassed in the 3rd qtr vs Boise. That’s what kept concerning most of us, but we’re not “haters.” We do appreciate to have what I find as a head coach that cares about his players, coaches, and fans.

I think Russ should be buried along with the UGAS. He is a damn good DAWG and he has filled an important roll. Point of interest, while growing up in Athens in the 50’s and attending Barrow school, I use to go to Ga. baseball games in the spring and chase down fowl balls. Mike, Wallys bulldog, was always at the game and would always stroll around the stands to be petted. We would feed him peanuts and after the game we would walk to the old field house and Mike would follow. Mike and I became friends. They are great memories for a young boy. Sicum DAWGS

Very well put “War Dang Dawg” – Thank you for making that clear how many of us felt. Our recent success just proves many of us right, we needed a fire lit under CMR or get him out. CMR had grown complacent and he lost focus. He made the right moves and the ship is headed in the right direction again, we all win.

This string of wins is just that …a string of wins. It doesn’t wipe away the disturbing number of games played between games where they “put it all together”. The win against Auburn simply reveals what the expectations should rightly be for this team. Other coaches and fan bases see this inconsistency; Spurrier being willing to articulate it. It’s a matter of examining facts … not a matter of being against a coach. Richt is paid well to have his teams play at a high level. With that said, there are some encouraging signs that with Richt reapplying himself this year, that we can play at a high level on a perpetual basis. The current staff has shown that they can coach.

If Bill never criticized the coaches, players and program, he would not be doing his job. Another bad season with a loss to UF could well have cost CMR his job. Last year was truly pathetic given our talent and tradition. We’re all thrilled with the turnaround since going 0-2 and it looks like we’re heading to a bright future for the next few years. We might even upset the West champion if we don’t experience a total meltdown against KY (and there is no indication the team is looking past the Cats). Everyone’s entitled to their feelings but, come on, man, CMR gets paid well enough to be able to withstand some heat.

Let’s be real: UGA fans should absolutely have been mad about the 0-2 start and pessimistic about Richt’s ability to get things done. Still, most of us really like the guy, and now that things are going well, we should embrace success under him. I agree with comments that we absolutely must retain Grantham or find a fiery replacement. Richt needs the alter ego on that side of the ball. Next year, we MUST keep Grantham though because UGA should be in its best shape in years to compete for a national championship. They will have veteran talent, depth, momentum, and everything that should make excuses lame. I am optimistic at the moment but hope the rest of this season plays out well.
As for the comment that players matter more than coaching? Hahaha. NO WAY. Even if players did matter more, only good coaches get good players unless bad coaches are willing to be unethical and attract the ones that are looking for an easy route to playing and getting attention. In college, you simply have to have great coaching to have a strong program. Why does Boise State win? They wouldn’t if their coaching was mediocre. There is always one or two exceptions to a rule, but you don’t find awesome teams in college that have poor coaching.

I agree with Cohutta Dawg.
However, neither have earned their letter this year.
Both are pitiable. They both arouse strong, protective feelings of irrational support. Gene therapy may help one of them. Mark Richt isn’t that one. Mark Richt insists on being driven from halfassity.
Georgia must have fire in the belly, risk taking, discipline demanding, and championship quality offense. It seems that Mark Richt just came to expect, and accept Georgia folks asking about whether the Dawgs would get after Flawduh this year. Long sigh, pause…oh no, not another one of those boringly insistent Bulldawg Nation folks. What do they want anyway? What do they expect?
I, for one, expect Mark Richt to earn his paycheck. That’s just tough love.

Just a word to the gentleman who was calling out “fair weather fans” for wanting Richt fired: The problems with Richt’s teams have been lack of preparation and lack of focus. The special teams were woefully unprepared and unfocused during the South Carolina game. By all rights, Georgia should have won that one. It seems that not a year goes by that Georgia doesn’t lose at least one game due to lack of preparation or lack of focus. 2007 is a great example of what could have been. A superior Georgia team, laden with NFL talent, lost two games to lesser teams (SC and Tennessee). A win in either of those games would have seen Georgia in the SEC Championship Game. By all accounts, UGA was the hottest team in the country at that time, and would have likely represented the SEC in the Mythical National Championship Game. Unfortunately, due to lack of fire and preparation, a two-loss LSU team got the MNC invite instead of UGA. This is the problem with Richt-coached teams. Pointing this out in no way makes me a fair-weather fan. My family has had season tickets since 1981, and I drove from Charleston SC to Memphis last year to support a 6-6 UGA team in the Liberty Bowl. Were you there?

I hear ya, and on some points, I certainly agree, but that happens to a lot of teams. Keep in mind that same LSU team in 2007 lost to then #18 Kentucky and an unranked Arkansas to close their regular season. And I just want to choke someone everytime I hear the “well, they didn’t win their conference” crap from 2007 when anyone mentions the NC. Let me think, did Oklahoma win their conference in 2003 when they faced LSU for the title? Nope, they sure didn’t. Lost their last game of the season, conference championship game and then still played for the NC. Did I care then? Nope. Because the intent of the NC SHOULD BE to field the two best teams in the country against each other. Often, that just doesn’t happen because people are too busy worrying about whether a team win’s their conference or not.

Still Better Than Tech: I agree with your comments. As one of Coach Richt’s critics on this blog, I must ask a question to those of you who seem to think that he hardly ever does anything wrong. Besides the Auburn game, when did you see the Dogs playing their A-game for all four quarters during a game this year? A coach who earns as much money as Mr. Richt should be able to have his players well prepared to play well during the first game as well as those later in the season. I haven’t seen that happening much in recent years. And, yes, I know that he’s about to get an extension of his contract and probably a hefty raise too.

Looking back at the 2006-2010 era there are a number of things that contributed to the slide. CMR seems to be a “steady as she goes” leader. Coming off the level of success he had through 2005 it is understandable if he took the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it approach”. Humans, individually or in teams, have slumps. I think sometimes that’s because we assume it will happen but they occur nonetheless. The toughest thing to do in a leadership position is to navigate the course between “is it a slump?” and “off with their heads!” Both have their pitfalls. CMR believed Martinez could get the job done. He stayed the course and the negative inertia snowballed.
The coaching staff also recruited guys with talent but they weren’t very coachable. All you need to do to understand this concept is look at Michael Vick. We probably also had the wrong type of coaches to deal with that type of player. CMR is a patient man. Unfortunately, there are times where the extra chances bear no fruit. Then comes the painful “cutting of the bait”. Real maturity is seeing your mistakes and correcting them. CMR has done this. He purged the program of the “energy vampires” and started building the team anew. He found the chemistry. And now it is producing results.
No one doubts that Urban Meyer was a top tier coach, he had top shelf talent, and still the 2010 Gators flopped. Meyer bailed pure and simple. Muschamp is having to terraform the program. Don’t be surprised if a similar thing happens to Saban in the next couple of years. It already happened to Miles the past couple of years… remember the “he better get it done” line on Miles in the off season?
Dawg fans be glad we have Mark Richt. He was willing to reinvent himself. And maybe in a few years he may have to again. That is the nature of the game. Be glad we aren’t Tenn. They jettisoned Fulmer with no real idea what it was going to cost them. Food for thought.

SSlgator – you are a really classy guy. Firing blanks? Keep up the good work. You confirm everything everyone thinks about Gator fans. As far as being all white, there is no such requirement for an UGA. Russ was not made an UGA because of his age. I could be wrong but I do not think he is even running out with the team. Most of the UGAs have spots or “ticking”. UGA IV had his head powdered before games so it would not be noticed. Russ should be made an UGA and, even if not, he should be buried in Sanford regardless.

Clark Atlanta, Morehouse and Spelman sound familiar to you sir? Some fair schools I would say and also a possible reason there are not more African American students at UGA. Those are just some of the schools that are goals for a lot of those students in this state. You have a lot of hate and I feel sorry for you. Any student is lucky to be at any school in this day and age and just to reset this…… I believe the conversation was about “Football” and not the merits of matriculation at a state university.

I will fess up by saying that I didn’t think Ga could do better tha 8-4. I thought Richt had to do 9-3 to keep his job. I didn’t think we would beat Fl or AU. I dreaded the Tech game and the possible loss and all the I’ll feelings and uncertainty about the program that would come with 8-4 or 7-5. But I also said that if Richt goes 9-3 he stays. At the moment however, 9-3 would be hard to deal with. Losing in the SEC C G is still honorable. But only if we go to that game at 10-2. If we don’t beat GT then we stand the chance of a 3 in a row losing streak and all the boo birds surface again and the season will be regarded a failure. The 9 game win streak will be said to have been due to a weak schedule. Ga still has to win the next 2 plus a win in the bowl game to shut down negativity.

Emory draws off many of th African-American students who are academically qualified to attend UGA with various scholarship and economic incentives. When UGA tried giving preferential treatment to African Americans, the US District Court for the Southern District of Georgia struck it down. Georgia State is also less expensive than Georgia in that many students can commute from home. Finally, Spellman, Morehouse, Morris Brown and Clark Atlanta are attractive options which draw qualified African American students.

People can critique Tebow all they want but he wins, period. He doesn’t turn the ball over and is almost always the best runner on the field. He’s a natural leader and makes those around him better. He may have been 9-20 passing on Thursday but should have been around 14-20 with all the dropped balls/near catches. He’s only thrown 1 INT in five starts and is 4-1. I’ll take that every day.

Still@theKool-aid is merely a good Southern Republican who wants to protect the innocent colored folks from the evil Democrats, who bribe them into voting for them by offering such enticements as public schools and by making empty promises such as that the Social Security and Medicare programs that they have paid into for all of their lives will actually be there to assist them in their waning years on this Earth.
After all, everyone with a lick of sense knows that we can’t fix our economy unless we first destroy our government. It only makes sense… if you think about it.

Fellow Dawgs just one point– because a Fellow Dawg critizes does not mean he or she is a hater only means they are passionate about the Georgia Bulldogs. One of the things that gets overlooked here is Coach Richt has been his own worst enemy at times by being hard headed. I guess that is a common trait most of us human beings have as he stayed with Coach Martinez 2 years longer than he should have and he has stayed with Mike BoBo 2 years longer as well. Next he never has truely committed to running the football even though most of his success has been when we could just line up and ram it down the other teams throats.
As for Russ yes he should be given full UGA status as he has been our mascot during the rejuvenation of the team this year. Anyways these are my opinions and everyone has an opinion.

The UGA Vet School needs to take over the production of future UGAs. I believe that Sonny Seiler’s dogs have some genetic flaws from excessive inbreeding.
UGA should be a university program, not something “outsourced” to a fan or the private sector.
I am sure that having rights to the UGA line is very profitable to Mr Seiler. And that’s OK. Bottom line, though, is that we have one of the best vet schools in the country and they need to be incharge of carrying on our UGA tradition.

As Snoop reads these blogs, it is easy to understand why most people lose their shirts in the stock market. Why? Most are fickle and go with the fad.
Richt has not suddenly become a great coach. He’s the same incompetent coach that McGarrity relieved of all administrative duties last year so that he could focus exclusively on “the study of football.” He is an incompetent coach.
That being said, he is not stupid. He’s a great salesman, and his Hollywood looks gets him votes with the womenses kinda like Bill Clinton did. His sales schtick serves him well in recruiting, as does his Bible Belt routine. When threatened with his $3M+ annual salary, he grudgingly recruited Grantham which has saved his bacon from the flames.
So don’t live in the moment, folks. Think instead. Assess this guy objectively. If we can keep a little fear in Richt, then he will perform best. He still needs to replace or demote Bobo and we need a Grantham-caliber OC. Then, da Preacha Man can pray, recruit, and pose for us as we win football games regularly in the future.

Attendance at UGA is earned by merit, not ethnicity. Students need to perform in the high school classroom in order to get accepted to UGA just like high school football players need to perform on the field in order to get athletic scholarships.

Snoop 73% of UGA football players are Special Admits where only 6% of the rest of the student body are special admits. If you are not very smart and African American but can play a sport we want you. If you are SMART and African American you really should look at some other college in Ga. That is basically what UGA tells minorities. Is that what the Flagship should do? many minorities don’t even apply to UGA because of the culture at the school.

The special admits, who are overwhelmingly black, are extremely luck to get an opportunity for a coveted academic diploma that they could not otherwise qualify for.
The black community needs to look inward to understand why only 6% gain academic admission. It is certainly not because of racial discrimination. Could it be that the ethnic culture is at fault?

Snoop lives in the DC area. Howard University is a fourth quartile institution. It is a lousy school.
The only thing that keeps a black person out of UGA is himself or herself.
Culture, world outlook, work ethic, affirmative action/quota/victimhood mentality, and a culture that discourages studying hard and making good grades.
If you want to attend UGA, you have to earn it the old fashioned way.

Racism is the most poorly used word anymore. A quick definition for you:
“noun
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
”
Nothing in any of these little rants justifies the use of the word.

Still@… why are you even posting here? This isn’t a political forum. This is a forum for people who want to reply to Bill’s blogs. The content of your posts doesn’t belong here.
Incidentally, the word “racist” is totally misused. RACIST= the belief that YOUR race is inherently superior to another race and thus deserving to rule over others based on that belief. Hitler and the Nazi’s were racists.
The word to be used is “bigoted” or “prejudiced”. That is the assumption that because SOME people are a certain way that ALL others of that group must also be that way.
I wish everyone word stop using that word – it waters down the actual evil of such beliefs.
