How will Dogs handle life in the driver’s seat?

SEC-Football1It was amusing to hear Kentucky coach Joker Phillips telling about getting a text from the 803 area code (South Carolina) offering him dinner “anywhere in the world” if Kentucky upsets Georgia, but it also brought home how good it feels for the Dogs to control their own destiny, as the sports cliche goes, in the battle to play in the Georgia Dome.

Dawgs fans can relate to what South Carolina fans are feeling right now. Remember how frustrating it was for most of the season when we knew that no matter how well Georgia played, all the Gamecocks had to do to get back to Atlanta was win out in the conference?

Now, the roles are reversed and Carolina fans who were crying “War Eagle” last week are desperately cheering this week for Big Blue (a nickname more commonly applied to the Wildcats in basketball).

I know a lot of Georgia fans are concerned that with the point spread approaching 30 for this game the Dogs might come out complacent or lose focus looking ahead, and that’s certainly a legitimate fear in a situation like this. But a team that doesn’t let an 0-2 start and “hot seat” talk about its head coach derail its season isn’t easily distracted from the task at hand.

The Bulldogs know this isn’t just any old game against a lightly regarded opponent. This is a game to clinch the division title and go to the SEC Championship for the first time since 2005. I’ll be surprised if Georgia doesn’t come out breathing fire Saturday and ready to show the world they’re Dome-worthy. This is why these players came to UGA, to play for a championship.

After spending most of the early part of the season hearing constantly that each game was a “must” win for the Dogs, nothing’s really changed. Kentucky is a must win, but in a positive sense.

This time last year, every game for the Dogs was “big” in the ironic sense that they were desperate to just qualify for a bowl bid. This year, Kentucky is a big game because it’s for the SEC East.

Turnarounds like that are what make college football such a blast.

Feel free to share your own views on life in the driver’s seat.

Time for Crowell to step up and defend his manhood. If you are going to be a legend, play like it. Play with fire and demand to be an every down back. Fight for an extra three yards, bounce up, and blast the D on your next run. CLAIM IT! You should get stronger as the game goes on! CLAIM IT!!!!

Some of my personal thoughts about where we are this season:

-CMR should win SEC and maybe national Caoch of the Year honors. He is the main reason kids come to play for us. Class, integrity, and knowledge…all the time. Give him a contract extension.

-CTG has done an amazing job in his second year as DC. The kids are responding well to him and his schemes. Give him a contract extension.

-Our kids have gotten better EVERY week as players came back from injury and bad decisions. The players that filled in did an incredible job and it has only made us stronger. Kudos to all of them.

-Isaiah Crowell grew up in the second half of the Auburn game. It seems his stamina and knowledge of the blocking schemes has finally kicked in and he hopefully has realized what a tremdous opportunity he has at UGA.

-Aaron Murray is easily the best QB in the conference and will only get better. He along with our tremendous recieving corps are ready to dominate in the remaining games.

-I am prouder than ever to be a UGA grad. Go Dawgs!

I want the nay-sayers to continue to give the Dawgs no shot vs. LSU. It simply adds fuel to fire and makes a win that much sweeter.

OK, before anyone says Kool-aide, I know the Dawgs won’t be playing for the crystal ball. But…What does happen to the BCS if UGA wins the SEC? After beating number 1 LSU, does UGA move up to number 5? Does Bama play for the title? Does Ark? Or does it mean no SEC team gets a nod? How do you have a BCS champion without an SEC team, when after Sc beats Clemson, and then we will have 5 teams in the top 10??!! Does then finally destroy the BCS and get a play off even if its just 8 teams? What if….. well all I can say is GO DAWGS!!

gregpatrick, the reason why Crowell started running better in the 2nd half was because he saw what CT was doing on the field, and figured he had better step it up a notch or two, or CT would be starting in front of him next week.

If Arkansas beats LSU, LSU will likely fall behind both Arkansas and Alabama in the BCS. Arkansas will likely then jump LSU but not Alabama . In this case, LSU might be on the outside looking in, and they would be penalized for losing late in the season, as compared to losing earlier in the year. LSU would then have one loss, joining both Arkansas and Alabama. The highest BCS team would play in Atlanta and represent the SEC West against Georgia – which would most likely be Alabama.

The 2 schools that play in the SEC Championship are allotted 14,000 tickets. Their will be a lot less tickets available for the SEC Championship than for Boise State. I found both of these posts on a blog by SDS earlier this morning…Credit to the author: Jon of SDS:

If LSU were to beat Arkansas but lose the SECCG against Georgia (and Georgia is really hot offensively and defensively right now), there is a chance, with the hectic BCS, that they might not even get in a BCS game. Say what? Hear me out. Georgia would have the automatic seed to the Sugar Bowl with the win in Atlanta, and Alabama could be chosen as an at-large for another BCS game, over LSU. This would likely put the SEC on the outside looking in for the BCS Championship. I’m not sure anyone would be in favor – although I would be – of putting Alabama in the National Championship when the Tide didn’t even win the West or the SEC Championship.

I think that your point is partially true. Carlton Thomas had a great game as well, but you can actually go back to the Florida game and the awesome performance of RS IV and the New Mexico State game when two of our very talented scout teamers got a chance and made the best of it. “That sounds great, the man said. Let’s do it!”

A few days later, in the operating room, the surgeon asks the man if he’s absolutely certain he wants the surgery. “I sure am,” the man says. “Let’s get on with it.”

A couple of hours later, the surgeon has finished removing 99% of the man’s brain. Then, the unthinkable happened. The surgeon sneezed and accidentally removed the 1% of the brain that was left.

In the recovery room, the surgeon said, “Sir, I am so sorry. Instead of removing 99% of your brain, I accidentally removed 100%. this has never happened before, so we have no idea what someone without a brain will be like.”

The man looked up at the surgeon with glazed eyes, and with slurred speech said…

The athletic history of UGA is full of so many sordid, sleazy incidents – dating back to Vince Dooley and continuing through Mark Richt – that it’s impossible to overlook. The school has come to stand for drunkenness and lawlessness, coddling of illiterate low-class athletes who should never have been admitted to college, and rampant cheating by coaches.

UGA and Mark Richt are an affront and an embarrassment to all decent people in this state.

Dawg_Mike, the tiebreaker with a tie among Bama, LSU and Arkansas is not the highest ranking in the BCS if the 2 teams ranked highest in the BCS are within 5 places of each other.

Bama is currently 3rd and Ark is 6th. If Ark beats LSU they and surely Bama will jump the Tigers. In that scenario since Ark and Bama are within 5 places of each other, Bama goes to the SECCG because they beat Ark 38-14.

They haven’t beaten anyone who would be considered an elite team yet. They merely lucked out on the schedule this year. If they had had 2 play Ala, LSU, and Arkansas you could have tallied 3 more losses on the season. If they beat or even come close 2 lsu in the SEC game I will retract my statements. Till then though Ricth and BoBuBU need 2 go or we are doomed 2 more years of mediocrity in the Bulldog Nation

The Dawgs have a history of scheduling some of the BEST OOC games of any team in the conference.

really…when?? Colorado? Coastal Carolina? forgot, NM State is considered a national power. Boise counts, but it only highlights the fact that Georgia chokes in big games. Remember West Virginia? Yeah, you beat up the powerhouse from Hawaii…big time win that was…Lets not forget less than a year ago UCF spanked that behind. Joke program, successful only when rest of conference is down. 1980! haha! opponents had a 37% winning percentage! Even your titles are tainted with the stench of your opponents weakness. Evans had you guys on the path to at least some national repect by scheduling better ooc games, but Richt kept losing the games. (Colorado, OK State) Face facts dawg fans, you are a mid-pack SEC program.

Thanks TampaDawg for the response! I guess if they get there we will see how good the defense really is. From reading this blog, this team couldn’t beat MS State, FL, NMST, or AU according to some. I hope the team that GA faces, underestimates them like so many others. Now, of course I don’t want to get my hopes up and be disappointed, but I think they have the ability to beat any team they face.

Our situation isnt any different that Bama’s this year regarding the NC. didnt we get overlooked a few years ago for the championship game because we didnt win our conference, but had the better record in the SEC. If our dawgs win the east, they will represent the east a hell of a lot better than the sorry chickens from South Carolina did last year against Auburn. GTBob, I think you’re right about UK, Vandy handled them like they were playing a class 3A Florida High School team. I think if we fielded a team from the bloggers on here, we still win by a touchdown.

Regarding the split of SEC champ tickets...

November 15th, 2011
12:42 pm

…it is my understanding that only 10,000 tickets are alotted to each team that plays – then, only Falcons suite holders and club seat holders are allowed “right of first refusal” for tickets, not all season ticket holders.

So, since the game is already a sellout, with only those 20,000 tickets to the two schools officially unaccounted for, there will be far less tickets available to UGA season ticket holders than were available for even the UF game in Jacksonville (where approx. 40,000 were available)…and it is highly improbable that any tickets will be returned by UGA, LSU, AL, AR (or even SC – Murphy’s Law is still alive and well), depending on who actually plays in the game…

UGA is fortunate – no competition in the weak SEC Least!
However, UGA looked great against the barners – and give respect to Grantham and UGA’s defense.
Then again – Auburn is horrible this year.
Look for Arkansas to DRILL LSU as LSU peaked in a lucky victory over Alabama.
Yes, you read correct – LSU was lucky to beat BAMA due to our missed FG’s.

It must be tough for UGA fans knowing that as SEC EAST champs – you are the fodder, the celebratory victim for slaughter to the SEC WEST Champ which will be ALABAMA!!!!

Yes – ALABAMA!

Arkansas beats LSU.
ALABAMA destroys a pathetically weak UGA team in the SEC Title game.
ALABAMA wins NC #14 BABY!!!!!

anyone have any idea why the coaches don’t pull Crowell (when he is not pulling himself after getting hit hard…in several games) out and talk with him about running his mouth? I think this defense really has came together after Gratham showed he would back these players up after the VANDY game

IF we get past Kentucky (and we should), AND we play like we did against Auburn, the SEC Championship game should be one hell of a good game. I like our chances. I didn’t a month ago, but this team has really matured and started to gel. They are playing with confidence, not lethargically like they did against Boise State, or timidly like they did against S. Bama fans are so funny, and so are the talking heads at ESPN. These idiots on ESPN lobbied for UGA not to play for the N.C. in 2007 because they didn’t win their division or their conference championship, and then LSU which lost it’s last regular season game, but won the SECC game jumped UGA to get to the championship game. Yet here is Bama, which if LSU wins out will not have won anything, no division title, no SECC, yet all the idiot Bama fans, and all the idiots on ESPN think they deserve to play for the N.C. Bama fans are a joke, and they think their team deserves special treatment, but get a life you morons. Bama deserves nothing, they lost on their home field as a favorite, so go cry somehwhere else, maybe on the Auburn blog, because maybe you can beat them this year. Then the only title you will have is the pathetic state championship of Alabama. That really means alot. One other thing for all you negative people on these blogs about UGA. If UGA plays LSU in the SECC game, UGA should match up very well with LSU. Just a few stats for you people, UGA is ranked 4th in the nation in total defense, LSU is ranked 2nd, UGA is ranked 31st in offense, and LSU 71st. Advantage UGA, all day long. Bring on LSU, and their overrated offense. UGA will win this game if it happens.

Looks like a lot of UGA fans are beginning to sound a lot like UT fans back during the Fullmer years: having the games won before they’re played. UGA should beat KY even if they have a let-down. On the other hand, seems like I remember 2 or 3 years ago nobody gave UGA & Willie a chance to beat GT & Fat Boy in Atlanta and UGA won. The shoe is now on the other foot and maybe the exact opposite could happen at Grant Field. Best to let the games be played before mouthing off. So far as the SECCG is concerned, even though LSU has looked sluggish at times, they have beaten two quality opponents, Oregon and Bama. No cupcakes there. I think they will beat ARK because I think LSU’s defensive line and backfield can handle ARK’s offensive line and receivers. So far LSU has proven to be the top team in the country, and I think that will still be the case after the game on DEC 3 is over.

Please, let’s play the games at hand before we annoint ourselves winners of the East. Let me premise my remarks by saying the Dawgs would have a chance to win the SECCG if/when we get there. We do that with a great effort along with a few breaks.

Against LSU we will be in for a real test. They held an offense that runs similar to ours to field goals. I think our QB and receivers are better than Bama’s, Bama holds the edge on the Oline and running game. Who comes out best?

Defense and special teams will probably determine the outcome. LSU’s D is slightly better than ours, our special teams have struggled but improved to near perfection against AU. Our kickers are lights out better on paper but can they get back to form?

Finally coaching. Bobo called a great game against Auburn. IMO, it was great because “everything” worked. Where this staff has struggled “offensively” is when they have had to make adjustments because the basics weren’t working. LSU will probably force us to get creative, and IMO Bobo may blink.

If it’s LSU and UGA, we have a chance, but, our inexperience, and offensive coaching will be our weak spot.

North ave. faithful: you are either young, or have a short memory. In the ‘98 & ‘99 Georgia-tech games tech only won because of LOUSY officiating! First, was the Jasper Sanks fumble that wasn’t, the next year came the Joe Hamilton fumble which wasn’t called. Both these calls would have been OVERTURNED with today’s coaches challenges & replay. I agree SEC officials probably don’t want Georgia in the SECCG (to be a fly in the ointment), but such is the nature of things.

I agree with most of the reason’s why we are in the position we are in, but one that is not getting much credit is the job that Kasay and Tereshinski has done. I was able to accept us getting beat last year when I knew it was because the other team was just a better team on the field . Our job then is to recruit to fill our weaknesses but it was painful to watch a Georgia team lose a game because our players could not play physical ball for 60 minutes. By the 6TH or 7TH game we could barely play half a game without being worn out.
We have played 10 games this year and I think we are getting stronger but it’s probably because other teams are like we were last year. By the 10TH game if your team doesn’t have good nutrition and Strength and Conditioning you look like Georgia did last year. I hope Tereshinski will continue starting in January getting our players ready for what could be a very special year in 2012. Pre- season ranking of no worst than 5TH.

But come on – what a weak SEC East for UGA to win it – that means that UGA has played a REALLY SUCKIE schedule – Let UGA play even Arkansas and they would loss too – just like USC.
I mean, really, look at the SEC record of teams UGA has beaten – they suck:
Ole Missy 0-6,
Misery St 1-5 (with the one win against KY Jelly),
TentC 0-6,
Vandy 2-5 (2 wins against Ole missy, and KY Jelly),
FL 3-5 (3 wins against Ole Missy, KY Jelly, and TentC) – and when UGA played FL – they had a hobbled QB and their 2 primary backs/receivers missed most of the game)
And Auburn – ranked 24th before you the UGA game?? That was a waste to start with them.
Yea – pretty pathetic schedule. So – once again – I have to ask – WHO has UGA beaten that was even a decent team (except maybe Auburn – who is half decent – but then again Clemson beat them pretty soundly and Utah State SHOULD have one that game.
And I guess since UGA lost to BSU – UGA’s strength of schedule just took another beating – with BSU losing to TCU this past weekend.
So bark as much as you want to UGA – You still haven’t beaten anyone who matters.

UGA fan’s you need to go to the Auburn link and read what Mr. Pat Dye (The X-Bulldog) now a Auburn turn coat said about the sad effort made by Auburn at Athens Last Satuday. I think we have more freshmen starting than Auburn. Yes, that what I said starters. I think we have more freshmen who has already pull off their red shirt and making a contribution than Auburn. If Mr. Dye is looking down the road for improvments I think he need some new player. These are the same players that started the season. It appears to me UGA players got better, and Auburn players went the other way. Sad, so sad. Wake up and smell the coffee Mr. Dye. That the reality of things….

I just love it. All of you other SEC program supporters come on to the UGA blog to just spew your inferiority. Face it. There’s a feeling in your stomach right now that makes you sick because you know that UGA is BACK ON THE RISE and our TEAM IS FULL OF YOUNGSTERS. And, even if we lose to LSU or Arkansas in SEC title game, UGA IS ABOUT TO GO ON ANOTHER RUN LIKE WE SAW FROM 2001 TO 2005. F A C T!!!

So, to all of you JACKWAGON’s representing other punk SEC schools, eat it!

Alphare- AU may not be great, but they were ranked in all 3 pollls until UGA blasted them. The only reason they fell out is bc of how bad UGA beat them. Oh, & they’re still ranked in the BCS poll as well. Why, probably bc they’re AU…the defending national champs. The point is that you said that they’re not ranked, but I’m just stating the facts.

Someone help me here. We were on fire in 2007 and no team wanted to face us. We beat Hawaii (like a red headed step child) in the Sugar Bowl. I remember the media darlings saying we couldn’t play for a NC because we didn’t win our conference.
Now how is it possible for Bama to play for the NC without even being in the SEC CG? Assuming LSU beats Arkansas. Just asking. I’m tired of hearing about Bama anyway. Anyone remember last year when Bama was the talk all year and then they fizzled late.

These young DAWGS will handle being in the drivers seat just like they have done in every game since the opening two. They have matured very fast as a team and as individual members or parts of this team. They will take care of business and win, I predict going away from a team led by a Joker. Surely, if I were him, I wouldn’t pack my bags in anticipation of going to diner, after a victory against UGA, because that will be wasted energy. Auburn is a better team, and UGA handled them just fine, so I do not think Kentucky will present a challenge that can not be overcome. The DAWGS know what is at stake and it would be an error by anybody to make the assumption that they will have a let down against Kentucky.
I don’t even think they are even looking ahead to Georgia Tech. because in all likelihood, Tech. will also not present a big problem. I believe the DAWGS will enter the Dome, with a record of 10-2. My guess is the spread will be 8-10 points in UGA’s favor for the game against Tech.

Q:

Why does Towers insist on stirring this salary and contract renewal issue?

I mean is that really what UGA fans want to read at this point in the season.

MG has said that they will not talk contracts until after the season ends. He said this before the season started!

CT just insists that they be controversial wuestions over the UGA program which in no way helps our program… especially with recruiting.

Boycot CT’s post UGA fans. He has already boycotted mine – Blocked for some reason?

Pardon the repost, I don’t normally do that, but:

I saw an interesting dicusssion on another site and one of the poster offered up a hypothetical situation and I think his point is spot on.

IMAGINE if Richt had fired Bobo and hired a brand new OC who said he was going to completely revamp the offence in the offseason to be more of a faster paced hybrid Pro-Style/Shotgun Spread rather than the traditional play action Georgia offense of the past years. And this in an effort was to increase the plays and first downs, thus scoring opportunities.

Now Imagine that Georgia was leading the SEC in plays, first downs, TD passes, time of possession, QB rating, 3rd in scoring and sitting at 9-2, 7-1, and headed to the SECCG as a potential top 10 team. Aaron Murray (just a sophomore) had just broken the single season TD pass record with games still left. All this with a suspect line (and a new coach), and true freshman to replace last year’s top 2 Rec’s and RBs. Imagine also if the AA place kicker would have given him the extra 30 plus points that he should have.

This new OC would be seen as a hero, and everybody would be singing his praises every bit as much as they as Granthams now.

AltamahaDawg: I will admit, I was not a big Grantham fan coming into the season. I just didn’t see his system working the way we were all told it would. I was wrong. Evidently, Gramtham has the right players in the right places now, and everything seems to be clicking. However, i’m still not sold on Bobo. The offense has improved, but still there are questionable play calls from game to game. Let’s face it-Blair Walsh’s inconsistent play has forced Georgia’s coaches to take chances when they normally would not (AKA the Florida game). It’s the BIG games that determine any coach’s worth, and quite frankly, it appears their biggest games are still ahead of them. I would love nothing more to prove to people Georgia’s not near as bad as most of us thought they were going to be after the first 2 games. If people were truly honest about it, they would admit, as do I, we all thought we were looking at another dismal season for the Dawgs.

Georgia plays LSU lose,Arkansas lose,Alabama lose. The fact is UGA had the best chance of doing something special this year, they will never have such a favorable schedule.Richt blew it right out of the gate by not being ready to play. Why do us UGA fans always have to say next year blah blah blah.In reality we have played nobody all year.We need a coach like Saban who doesnt give a damn about winning the SEC,the BCS is all that matters period.Nobody cares if u win the sec east with two losses. We should be a contender every damn year. Why can Alabama and Auburn hire a coach and win a national championship within 2 years? We recruit great players every year but cant win the games we need too.I mean really knowshon,AJ,Stafford and we still lose?Nobody can deny what Saban has done in a few short years.Reality is Alabama and LSU are light years ahead of us.I want to go to a football game and know we are gonna kick ass and not worry about Vanderbilt beating us.Dominant ,Dominant.I am sick of reading about players in the news, fail a drug test or get arrested ur gone period.Crowell makes me sick,I dont give a damn how good he is,he is a cancer.Nothing but a thug. Why is it every time he makes a good run i see him high fiving on the sideline?Even when we are losing. Can he not run the ball 40 times a game? I am sorry i dont share enthusiasm that Bill King has but he is delusional. He lost me with his pre Auburn article ,sorry Bill football is a contact sport, and Auburn beat us.At the end of the day we need to realize that being an SEC powerhouse is something we have to have every year period.

I do not see UGA being embarrassed in the SEC Championship game. Look at the facts: 1 Murray is the top qb in the Conference and gets the ball to all his receivers for scores 2 The D is playing super 3 UGA has a good balanced attack making the D coordinators play both run and pass as if either could score on any play- which UGA can. 4 The team is nothing like it was 3 months ago and has matured. They won’t go without a fight. Something that could not be said for last years bunch.

Dear Ga. fans, let us be realistic. (1) Murray is a great Qb given time, but LSU won’t give him that time (2) Ga’s defense has improved, but LSU will run it over and through them. (3) Ga has speed, but they have not faced a team with as much speed as LSU (4) Ga will not play for the National Championship.

I think the only way Alabama has a chance to get in the Championship is for LSU to lose in the SEC Championship and the higher ranked teams to lose in their conference championships. Oklahoma State has to loose. That would then leave it up to the BCS to decide which Conference Champions that are the highest ranked to go. That would leave it to Oklahoma and Oregon if they won their conferences. Until we have a playoff system, only the Conference Champions will go to the National Championship. That’s the only way to solve the problem even though you have teams like Alabama who will miss out because of not winning their conference. We would have an interesting situation if none of the higher ranked teams won their championships! It’s stil wide open as far as the top 11 teams.

Let us be clear

November 17th, 2011
9:16 am

The UGA haters try to portray UGA fans as delirious, delusional or always drinking the Kool-Aid,etc. Fine, jealousy makes people write mean things. We giggle when we read their hatred and their spews of JELAOUSY.

Here is where UGA fans and grads desire to be very year or nearly every year:

UGA playing a SEC team at season’s end for the SEC EAST Championship. A trip the The Georgia DOme on the line and a chance ………………. if only a chance to defeat the team from the SEC West to wear the badge of SEC CHAMPION. Win that game …………….. then, it all falls into place on a national level. First things first.

For REAL UGA fans ………………it starts with this KY game, then only a glimmer of hope vs LSU or ALabama or Arky is all that we desire. We just want our lil shot.

GT? Absolutely, UGA players and fans want to focus on THAT YEAR END GAME, so as to make it all very, very memorable for us all.

UGA 45-KY 16

ONLY a shot

November 17th, 2011
9:25 am

I suspect that 99% of ALL NCAA schools would LOVE ( I know ALL ACC TEAMS WOULD ) to be in UGA’s spot right now. If we win vs. KY then, we are IN THE SEC C G and that is THE MAIN EVENT ALL OVER AMERICA.

UGA has recovered with the ealry losses and THAT IS ALL that a fan or alumnus can ask for. UGA IS IN THE HUNT for the ever GLAMEROUS SEC TITLE. Heck with two losses, if UGA wins that game ………………… they will STILL BE In the top 5 in USA and again, THAT IS ALL ANY QUALITY SCHOOL can ask for.

Richt will win the EAST for the 4th or 5th time in his 11 year UGA career and on a % basis ………………………….let the hate begin. JEALOUSY drives it all.

GT? They lose to UGA, then they will be desperately, oh desperately scrambling for some low level bowl AGAIN like last year.

If UGA somehow wins the SEC C G? Then, they will be in their 4th Sugaar Bowl in 11 years. GT has only been to 3 major bowls since 1955 or 1956. 1956 Sugar? and the 1967 Orange and the 2009 Orange and that is it!!! Sad. THEY LOST ALL THREE !!!!!
