How will Dogs handle life in the driver’s seat?

SEC-Football1It was amusing to hear Kentucky coach Joker Phillips telling about getting a text from the 803 area code (South Carolina) offering him dinner “anywhere in the world” if Kentucky upsets Georgia, but it also brought home how good it feels for the Dogs to control their own destiny, as the sports cliche goes, in the battle to play in the Georgia Dome.

Dawgs fans can relate to what South Carolina fans are feeling right now. Remember how frustrating it was for most of the season when we knew that no matter how well Georgia played, all the Gamecocks had to do to get back to Atlanta was win out in the conference?

Now, the roles are reversed and Carolina fans who were crying “War Eagle” last week are desperately cheering this week for Big Blue (a nickname more commonly applied to the Wildcats in basketball).

I know a lot of Georgia fans are concerned that with the point spread approaching 30 for this game the Dogs might come out complacent or lose focus looking ahead, and that’s certainly a legitimate fear in a situation like this. But a team that doesn’t let an 0-2 start and “hot seat” talk about its head coach derail its season isn’t easily distracted from the task at hand.

The Bulldogs know this isn’t just any old game against a lightly regarded opponent. This is a game to clinch the division title and go to the SEC Championship for the first time since 2005. I’ll be surprised if Georgia doesn’t come out breathing fire Saturday and ready to show the world they’re Dome-worthy. This is why these players came to UGA, to play for a championship.

After spending most of the early part of the season hearing constantly that each game was a “must” win for the Dogs, nothing’s really changed. Kentucky is a must win, but in a positive sense.

This time last year, every game for the Dogs was “big” in the ironic sense that they were desperate to just qualify for a bowl bid. This year, Kentucky is a big game because it’s for the SEC East.

Turnarounds like that are what make college football such a blast.

Our situation isnt any different that Bama’s this year regarding the NC. didnt we get overlooked a few years ago for the championship game because we didnt win our conference, but had the better record in the SEC. Forgot who we ended up playing. So why should Bama get the preference this year, compared to when we were in the same situation?

If our dawgs win the east, they will represent the east a hell of a lot better than the sorry chickens from South Carolina did last year against Auburn. I hope it is LSU and we beat the crap out of them, tired of hearing about how good the west is. Also this would help in recruiting–LSU doesn’t recruit in Georgia like Alabama and I think it may sway some recruits. GATA

cliff from waleska, no troll, how about BSU twice, Ok State, and Clemson. Again, I guess it’s too difficult for you to look up how scheduling works too so until you get that in your knowledge base, your point is worthless. Then you bring up bowls but conveniently leave out beating Mich State, Wisconsin, Purdue, Florida State, Virginia Tech, and Texas A&M. Why did you? Because it makes argument weak.

WDE, he is just like TB and wants to pull a few games out of about 140 that have been coached by CMR and say “look see, I told you UGA schedules weak opponents!” Then his argument takes a dive when you see the real list. We could be like a lot of other SEC teams and NEVER schedule a good OOC game with the exception of a rivalry game.

After our last bowl game and the start of this season, I was as down on the uninspired play of this team as a UGA fan could be. But to the coaches’ and players’ credits, this team has done all we could have asked since then. Play ‘em, win ‘em, and put yourself in a position to be a champion. How could any fan of college football not like this team’s revival. They’ll be in Atlanta. LSU would be wise not to think they’re playing those other Dawgs.

I can understand the fear of a hangover performance after smashing Auburn on national TV, but this game now means literally everything for this season. If UGA was already out of the SEC East race then I wouldn’t be surprised to see them struggle a little with Kentucky. I just don’t see that happening though, every UGA coach and player knows how big this game is.

If UGA suspends all of their starters before the game then they will still win by 3 touchdowns. Kentucky is one of the worst teams in the country.

Dawg_Mike: you are correct about alabma not going to the BCS title game on all points. Why in the world would Alabama deserve a slot in that game after not winning the SEC title, let alone their division? If y’all remember, aren’t these the very same things being said about Georgia in ‘07. Here in Bamaland, I can’t believe the crying & lobbying going on here for Alabama to be in the BCS title game. I remember these are the SAME Alabama fans saying Georgia should not have gone in ‘07. Funny how their perspective changed when the shoe’s on the other foot!!!!!!

GTBob, I think you’re right about UK, Vandy handled them like they were playing a class 3A Florida High School team. I think if we fielded a team from the bloggers on here, we still win by a touchdown.

Regarding the split of SEC champ tickets...

November 15th, 2011
12:42 pm

…it is my understanding that only 10,000 tickets are alotted to each team that plays – then, only Falcons suite holders and club seat holders are allowed “right of first refusal” for tickets, not all season ticket holders.

So, since the game is already a sellout, with only those 20,000 tickets to the two schools officially unaccounted for, there will be far less tickets available to UGA season ticket holders than were available for even the UF game in Jacksonville (where approx. 40,000 were available)…and it is highly improbable that any tickets will be returned by UGA, LSU, AL, AR (or even SC – Murphy’s Law is still alive and well), depending on who actually plays in the game…

In a parking lot. I would be careful driving home though. A minimum of half of the UGA fans leaving the stadium will be drunk. You might be better off hanging out in Atlanta for a few hours as the roads will not be safe.

so if Bama goes to the Dome and plays us, you are saying we shouldn’t even bother showing up?

News flash for you. Bama is offensively challenged. We would stuff the box and dare them to throw it.

The game would be low scoring, not a blowout as you guarantee.

Not saying we could win because their defense is legit but, ours ain’t bad either.

To say they would automatically just blow us out indicates you don’t watch much football or know much about it.
