A statement game from Mark Richt’s Dawgs

Michael Bennett's touchdown catch was a highlight on a great day for the Dogs. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

So much for questioning the Vegas odds wizards installing a double-digit point spread for Georgia over a ranked SEC rival.

The Dogs didn’t just cover the spread, they buried it deeper than Jimmy Hoffa as they demolished Auburn convincingly and set themselves up with a chance to clinch the SEC East title next week.

Georgia’s’ blowout win over the defending national champion was the sweetest moment Between the Hedges since the 2007 Blackout win over the Tigers, and the home crowd deserves some of the credit for making Sanford Stadium as noisy as it’s been since then.

They had a lot to cheer about, though.

The offense and defense both played lights-out ball Saturday. How about 528 yards of offense with two running backs topping 100 yards and little Carlton Thomas averaging 8.5 yards per run. Four touchdown passes for Aaron Murray as he passed Matthew Stafford for the UGA season record and tied him on the career list. The much maligned Georgia offensive line moving the pile time after time, opening gaping holes for the backs and protecting Murray. The Dogs converting on 12 of 15 third downs while holding the Tigers to just three of 11. Ten tackles for loss and five sacks from Todd Grantham’s defense, with Bacarri Rambo making a terrific return for a pick 6.

Aside from a couple of fumbles by the returning Isaiah Crowell, there wasn’t much to gripe about and a lot of highlights in the game for Georgia fans. But I think my favorite was that impressive touchdown catch where Michael Bennett laid out for a score reminiscent of A.J. Green.

And all of it on national TV, to boot.

Yeah, this was definitely a statement game for Mark Richt’s remarkable, resilient comeback kids.

How ’bout them Dawgs!

Most impressive part for me – UGA ran the ball on 26 consecutive plays on their last 4 drives of the game. Auburn had 9 guys stacked up in the box and couldn’t stop the run. The O-line hasn’t looked that dominant in a very long time.

I was pleased with all three of the suspended Dawgs’ play. Even Malcome finally got to tote the rock in the last series behind the 18 year old O line. It took 7 seven War Eagles to stop him on his first run; we have some talent at TB. IC and CT looked fantastic….maybe we should suspend a few players every week. Harton looked good, too. The O line has looked great the last two weeks, and Murray has been nearly flawless. They scored 108 points, mostly in just four quarters of the last eight. UGA is clicking on all cylinders and really developing confidence and momentum. Go Dawgs!

I’m so glad the Bulldogs won.

Auburn didn’t look nearly as good as I’d thought they might. Was that because they had an off game? Or, are the Bulldogs really improving as much as they look like they might be?

While I doubt the Auburn team is a world beater, it did look like our Dawgs have greatly improved. There were a good many impressive plays made by our guys, plays that wouldn’t have happened early in the season.

It’s really nice to see Georgia players having such a good time.

I suspect we would have a good chance against any team playing as well as we played today!

Kentucky looms. We shouldn’t overlook them, and I don’t think we will.

I cheered for South Carolina, and was glad to see them play so well, and beat Florida. I thought going into it that USC was a better team, if they showed up, and they sure did. I can’t cheer for Florida (unless they’re playing Ohio State or somebody like that). Besides, I wanted some pressure on Georgia, and Georgia responded to it.

No reason to slack off, right?

Perfect? Of course not, but I can’t even complain much about Bobo, and that’s saying something.

Go, Georgia Bulldogs.

This is the game I have been waiting to see all season: 4 quarters of focused effort from all phases of the game.

Make no mistake, my Kool-aid drinking brethren, today in no way exonerates Richt for his failure to take us to the big dance and bring home the crystal. In fact, it actually bolsters the argument that he will never get us there and should be replaced.

We are now looking at a season that could be marred only by Richt’s complete inability to prepare the Dawgs to play this way from Game 1 each season. It is still within the realm of possibility for UGA to win the SEC outright, albeit a remote possibility. However, due to Richt’s failure to view the Boise St and SC games as crucial “must-wins”, we will still be overlooked for the Big Game. In a year where the SEC-East was weaker than it has been in Richt’s entire time here and UGA’s schedule was the weakest it has been in 20 years or more, we will once gain be looking in from the outside.

What we saw today was what we could have been seeing all year- the men are the same and their abilities are the same as they were on day 1. Our coaching staff simply is unable to instill the belief and discipline necessary to get our Dawgs to play every game like they did today . Why does it take 10 games for the Dawgs to gel as a unit when they have all the tools necessary to do it all along? I submit it is because we have a head coach who is so content with himself that he simply cannot be bothered to obsess over the details of every aspect of the program (special teams, anyone?). Compare him to Saban, Miles, and Meyer and the efforts and results they are able to wring from their teams week-in and week-out.

Great win today, but it’s too little and too late. If we win out the rest of the season, the SECCG and the Sugar Bowl, how many of you will be able to resist wondering how great it would have been if CMR had reminded his players to watch out for a fake punt against SC, or made sure they could cover kickoff returns and onside kicks?

You all might see Richt as an angel, but the devil – and the MNC – are in the details and he just doesn’t seem to understand that.

Yes Auburn is down but how many times in the past have they come into Athens and put one on us. The Dawgs should play with this much passion and focus every game. GATA

Relax folks…

Here is how it works…

After every game Georgia has won – all you hear is how the team wasn’t any good. Many of those same people were pointing at this game that would expose Georgia.

LSU beat Auburn 45-10 with a 21-7 lead at half time. Georgia could have hung 60 on Auburn today.

So every team is lousy and Georgia is over-rated. The only way these folks will shut this up is to win out and then play a good game in the Dome.

“SIGH”

How quickly the minions forget Richt’s failure to convert the momentum of 2007 into results in 2008. How can you all not realize the SEC has passed right by UGA since 2005? I am a DAWG through and through and the facts are glaring: Richt reached his level of incompetence in 2005, and we have watched 4 different coaches come into the league and win it all 5 times with a mix of their own and their predecessors’ players since then. This year will probably be year 6 of that streak. Why shouldn’t we expect a $3 Million/year man to have our young men in that hunt as well?

I loved today’s win and I hope we win out. However, winning ugly games against weak opponents and consistently competing at an elite level are not the same. Why settle for the consolation prize year after year? Do any of you ever get tired of the “wait ’til next year” mentality?

Cigar Dawg,
At the beginning of this season, I was one of those that was calling for Richt’s ouster. After the events of the last few weeks, I’m so happy that we have a coach the caliber of Mark Richt here at our University. When I see what Penn State is going through, I realize that we’re blessed to have a man of Richt’s character leading our program. So we won’t win it all this year. I’m okay with that as I’ve seen this team grow by leaps and bounds this year. Coaches coaching kids up, players playing with fire, a defense to be feared, and Aaron Murray distributing the ball to a plethora of receivers. I’ll be happy with what we have and ask for forgiveness for my earlier foolishness. I hope Coach Richt can forgive the Bulldog faithful that doubted him and didn’t appreciate what he brings to this university. I’ll take him over Joe Pa, Saban, Meyer and others any day.

Some none Dawg fans are trying to minimize our win but when evaluating Auburn this win was against a very good team and Georgia players should feel proud of a complete domination of a good team. Auburn is a very young team that still has to find a QB and Mosley may be him but Newton played so much last year Mosley didn’t get any game experience so he had to use this year for that.
Auburn lost to #1 LSU, #8 Arkansas and #9 Clemson. They beat # 13 South Carolina. Don’t tell me that Auburn is not a good team. They just have the schedule from hell this year and as a young team don’t have a good record . A lot of the top 25 teams could not beat Auburn.

The Dawgs haven’t played a game like this since the SEC Championship game against LSU in 2005. And this was much more dominating. I watched a replay of the 2007 Blackout against Auburn and this was far more impressive. Auburn actually was in that game until the 4th quarter. Auburn was buried by the middle of the 2nd quarter. I haven’t seen the Dawgs dominate a game like this against a good SEC opponent in a long time. Maybe ever. Yes ever. The 82 Dawgs were probably the best overall team we ever fielded and they crushed UF 44-0 that year. This might be on that level. UF wasn’t ranked and lost to Vandy that year.
Yes this was a statement game… the statement is “it ain’t over til it’s over”. Believe Bulldog Nation. Richt’s Dogs believe and we should too.

If Georgia gives an award for the person most valuable to their football team this year, the award should go to whoever determined the schedule. The Dawgs are the only team in the SEC East who did not play a single game against the top three in the West — the only SEC East team not playing even a single game against LSU, Alabama or Arkansas. But that will change in the SEC championship game, in which the Dawgs’ weaknesses will be exposed. Nevertheless, great game today, Georgia. I had expected it to be much closer.

T-Dawg

November 13th, 2011

This is a great day for all Dawgs to celebrate, and there are lots of reasons to feel good about UGA football. This is the first year we have beaten Tennessee, Florida and Auburn in the same year in god knows how long – whether they are down or not, that is something to celebrate. Our defense gave up 12 yards rushing combined to those three teams. I have watched every play of every game this year, and I think the defense is as good as anybody in the country (so do the know-it-alls calling the game who see our defense up close). Combine that with the offense, especially Murray and the O Line, playing like they have been the last couple of games, and I have to say I am very proud of our team and think they can compete with anybody. Even if you go back to the two losses, I didn’t go away from those feeling hopeless, like I have frequently since the 2008 Alabama game. This is a team that real fans should believe in. And to freaking demolish Auburn feels great, especially after last year’s game.

On a different note, people who continue to argue that Mark Richt should go must be truly delusional. It’s easy to get frustrated when things aren’t going well, like the last couple of seasons. But if you look at the man’s body of work at Georgia, who else has done or could do what he has done? Who should Georgia get to replace him? Aside from 09 and 10 teams, he consistently has a nationally relevant program that averages 10+ wins a season. He got to 100 wins faster than Dooley or a slew of other coaching legends, and even with the mediocre 09 and 10 years included, he is one of the winningest coaches active today. Combine that with his commitment to high moral standards (especially relevant this week with the Penn State garbage going down), and it is difficult to think of anyone who could possibly be a better person to lead the University of Georgia’s football program. To say he is a failure or that the program is doomed because there have been a couple of less impressive years shows that you must not know much about college football, nor could you consider yourself a “fan” (i.e. “supporter”) of UGA football. Fans stick with teams and support the kids playing on the teams even if they are terrible (ask Tech fans, they can relate). This team is NOT terrible – I think they are pretty good. They are young and getting better every time they play, and they have the only guy I would want in charge as their coach.

for all of you who thought Coach Friend was not good enough, you should eat crow, and eat it good for a while. Coach Searles was way over rated as a recruiter and as a coach. he may have worked some magic a few years ago with freshmen playing, but overall he was not good and a negative influence on the program. Look how Texas is doing now and in the future. Coach Friend has done well and will continue to shine.

If Cigar Dawg is a Dawg Fan – We need to void his/her season tickets and excommunicate him/her from the Dawg Nation!
What you guys need to remember is any year during Richt’s tenure that we have had a stout defense, we have had a championship caliber team. As long as CTG stays, we have reclaimed top spot in the east … now UF, USC, UT, UK, VU are all chasing UGA. Wait and see what this run does for recruiting! ……….. We’re Baaaaack

Also, Todd Grantham didn’t appear to embarrass himself or the university. Maybe the cameras were trained to stay away from showing him.

OKIE DAWG,

I didn’t think we had to pull for the Gators so I am glad they lost simply for one reason.if nothing else. A certain Gator fan that always has crap to say about the DAWGS on here, named SSIGator or some such nonsense for a name. It was hard to pick a winner though, because I really dislike Spurrier and think he is really classless. I didn’t think we would need the Gators help for anything anyway. I just felt these DAWGS were going to defend their home turf. I just didn’t realize they were going to beat them as bad as they did.
If Spurrier had the kind of lead UGA had after the first half over Auburn, he would have just kept the heat on the second half and tried to score 70 points or more against a team, obviously beaten after the first 30 minutes. CMR showed class, by throwing I think just two second half passes and trying to keep the score down. The players showed real class also, as you didn’t see a lot of taunting like you did at first from the Auburn players. After the first half, you could look in their eyes and on the sidelines, and they knew it was going to be a really long night.
Congratulations to the DAWGS. It was a well deserved win, make that dominating win.

Finally! Complete game!

For the first time in three years I can say that game was well coached as we out coached the other guy!!!! The defense had been outstanding but finally CMR and Bobo offensive game plan looked outstanding. Very good game plan!

Murry finally has a good game against a ranked team….

I must say though that the receivers help him out as many of the long passes they had to come back to…..man our young receivers look good!

Is it just me or did anyone else say to themselves that we finally had a well coached game?

GT Bob: Here is Virginia Tech’s Schedule: If your premise is that Georgia hasn’t beaten a good football team. You I make the same argument (you can frankly make the same argument about Virginia Tech – and this isn’t meant to trash Tech – it isn’t clear what kind of team Tech has). Who have they beat? And if Auburn is a bad team – then who has Clemson beat? Virginia Tech?

At the end of the day – Tech will finally have the chance to prove that this run (likely to be a 9 game winning streak) is because of the competition then how good this team has become. If Georgia does manage to win – will it then be “well, we do not have a good football team”?

Good luck with Duke. See you on the flats in a couple of weeks.

It’s relatively obvious isn’t? The talent is there even the coaching ability is there. What the Dawgs have lacked most of the year is confidence and execution. That goes back to coaching. Grantham apparently has taken the lead, Richt and Bobo seem to have jumped on board. I have to say, that was a very impressive game called by Bobo yesterday. Root and the AU defense were on their heels all day and had no answer. A first for Bobo this year.

Congrats to Coach Richt, Coach Bobo, and especially Coach Grantham, and Coach Joe T. Taking on Boise first was a bad idea for this particular season. Freshman running backs, wide recievers, new o-line and front seven without time to build chemistry with experience. Strength and conditioning, combined with growing experience and cohesiveness, of such a young group doesn’t happen overnight. But it does ENSURE less time to begin next year! And I’m pretty sure that the teams on our schedule between now and next years NCG are very comfortable right now. Way To Go Dawgs!!!! Keep up the hard work, cause now you know why:-)

I’ve been hard on Coach Richt and Co. the last few years because I know that WHEN they coach their team up, they’re capable of going out there and putting on a performance like they did yesterday. Losers hope that someone will lose for them to win, winners take charge of their own destinies. Winners also don’t let down their guards vs. inferior teams like Kentucky. Take care of business next week and we’re in! And for the record, I think the Dawgs could give LSU or Bama a tougher out than most folks think.

It’s my guess LSU and Bama have taken notice. My very good friend, an LSU alumni certainly has and told me after the game, he’s not sure if his Tigers can match up very well with that team that beat AU yesterday. He said Georgia’s defense looked better than Bama’s and certainly more offense to have to contain. I reminded him that was only one game. However, he is a good analysis and student of the game and he seemed surprised and a bit worried.

Let us not forget, that our “storied football tradition” and our “we are UGA!” Mentality exists because of ONE national championship. We are not Alabama. We are not FSU. We are not Florida. Mark Richt has been our best hope since Dooley. He’s not perfect but by the laws of causality he is the reason the SEC has five straight BCSNCs. Holy crap the defense looked good yesterday. With the exception of some EARLY trickeration and busted coverage on the first drive, the defensive line blew up just about every play. The linebackers are flying all over the field making plays. Jarvis was exceptional again. Tree runs through people. That dude rules. Geathers and Big 6 are one of the best 1-2 NG combos around.

Can’t wait for our DLine to steam roll Tek’s weak a$$ offensive front in two weeks. Tevin and “insert mediocre B back” name here meet Ogletree and JJones.

We need a solid win over KY.

If Murray and the D can keep this pace things could be interesting in the Dome.

In all seriousness I don’t think UGA can beat the West champ. I don’t think the running game is consistent enough to put up decent numbers against the likes of LSU. If we were one dimensional in the passing game against their DBs it would get ugly. LSU’s NFL ready DBs would eat up our passing attack.

That said, it could be interesting.

One of his fumbles was a brain fart but the other one was clubbed out by that dudes cast. On the whole though, Crowell looked great and if he can keep his head straight and not get the Andruw Jones or AJ Green attitude of giving 40 or 50 percent, 70 percent of the time he will be great.

It’s common knowledge and an unquestioned fact that UGA head football coach Mark Richt has brought shame on the state of Georgia and made an embarrassing laughingstock of the state’s largest university. Even the most avid UGA fans understand this even when they won’t acknowledge it, bless their hearts. :-)

The most embarrassing thing is the win-at-any-price mentality of Richt, which has effectively made UGA a football f-a-c-t-o-r-y, with cheating, recruiting of low-intelligence jerks who barely graduated from high school, and tolerating immoral and unethical activities by both players and coaches. Even with all this, he still can’t win.

Richt is a product of the lawless environments of the University of Miami and Florida State University, where he learned well how to conduct himself in the most tawdry way, while pretending to the world to be a saint. Make no mistake – Richt is in coaching purely for the millions of dollars that have been wasted on him, and the millions more he will add until someone in Athens has the integrity and intestinal fortitude to run him out of town.

A truly shameful situation, especially since all Georgians, including UGA alumni and fans, have to live under this shadow of infamy.

Dawson – you don’t have a clue. Richt is well respected in the coaching business, in the media and by most Dawg fans. The Dawg fans that complain about him complain because he isn’t a win by any means coach. I would not want to win a national championship that will be erased by a cheating scandal. The folks at Auburn still aren’t sleeping well at night wondering what may still come to light about Cam Newton’s arrival at Auburn. With Richt, we don’t have such worries. And the parent’s who worry about their kids having a good mentor, will send them to Georgia.

The OL played BY FAR their best game of the season. They were moving bodies off the point of attack and really manhandling the Auburn DL. They even pass blocked effectively and you can see what a difference that made for Murray. Really, really good play from a unit that has been justifiably maligned all season.
