A statement game from Mark Richt’s Dawgs

Michael Bennett's touchdown catch was a highlight on a great day for the Dogs. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

So much for questioning the Vegas odds wizards installing a double-digit point spread for Georgia over a ranked SEC rival.

The Dogs didn’t just cover the spread, they buried it deeper than Jimmy Hoffa as they demolished Auburn convincingly and set themselves up with a chance to clinch the SEC East title next week.

Georgia’s’ blowout win over the defending national champion was the sweetest moment Between the Hedges since the 2007 Blackout win over the Tigers, and the home crowd deserves some of the credit for making Sanford Stadium as noisy as it’s been since then.

They had a lot to cheer about, though.

The offense and defense both played lights-out ball Saturday. How about 528 yards of offense with two running backs topping 100 yards and little Carlton Thomas averaging 8.5 yards per run. Four touchdown passes for Aaron Murray as he passed Matthew Stafford for the UGA season record and tied him on the career list. The much maligned Georgia offensive line moving the pile time after time, opening gaping holes for the backs and protecting Murray. The Dogs converting on 12 of 15 third downs while holding the Tigers to just three of 11. Ten tackles for loss and five sacks from Todd Grantham’s defense, with Bacarri Rambo making a terrific return for a pick 6.

Aside from a couple of fumbles by the returning Isaiah Crowell, there wasn’t much to gripe about and a lot of highlights in the game for Georgia fans. But I think my favorite was that impressive touchdown catch where Michael Bennett laid out for a score reminiscent of A.J. Green.

And all of it on national TV, to boot.

Yeah, this was definitely a statement game for Mark Richt’s remarkable, resilient comeback kids.

How ’bout them Dawgs!

UGA fans (not the retards on here)…did you notice in our 5 or so sacks our guys did not pile drive the AU QB like I had wanted them too (dang it)…like Fairley did last year and then stay on top of Murray talking trash a few seconds, he did it every time he could…and the AU coaches encouraged Fairley to play like this and even another player intentionally fell on Murray and just laid on top talking trash and the AU coaches were all applauding on the sideline…NO CLASS…take that Chizic

There are times when a team has no answer for what the other team is doing…tonight, AU didn’t even know what the question was. A thoroughly dominating and exililirating win.

“Cuz……your right….beat 8 straight unranked, down right awful teams after losing to 2 first rate teams….then beat a 23rd ranked Auburn……and now all is right with the Dawg world….right????

Amazing how low our standards for UGA have become…..sigh!”

The schedule is already in place. We don’t get to change it to play higher ranked teams after the season starts. I guess you would be happier if we were 2-8. I don’t understand your type of “fan”.

Great game, great win streak. Credit to the players and coaches for improving each weak. DAWGS should be pretty much able to play with anyone. I pegged them as 8-4, losses to BS, SC, UF and AU. I was thankfully wrong! :) Go DAWGS!

Relax folks…

Here is how it works…

After every game Georgia has won – all you hear is how the team wasn’t any good. Many of those same people were pointing at this game that would expose Georgia.

LSU beat Auburn 45-10 with a 21-7 lead at half time. Georgia could have hung 60 on Auburn today.

So every team is lousy and Georgia is over-rated. The only way these folks will shut this up is to win out and then play a good game in the Dome.

Did you really think the Dawgs were going to beat the Wargles down like this? Double up on the spread? Did you think before today the Dawgs could hold their own with LSU or Bama? Think again.. it’s great to be a Georgia Bulldog!

“SIGH”

How quickly the minions forget Richt’s failure to convert the momentum of 2007 into results in 2008. How can you all not realize the SEC has passed right by UGA since 2005? I am a DAWG through and through and the facts are glaring: Richt reached his level of incompetence in 2005, and we have watched 4 different coaches come into the league and win it all 5 times with a mix of their own and their predecessors’ players since then. This year will probably be year 6 of that streak. Why shouldn’t we expect a $3 Million/year man to have our young men in that hunt as well?

I loved today’s win and I hope we win out. However, winning ugly games against weak opponents and consistently competing at an elite level are not the same. Why settle for the consolation prize year after year? Do any of you ever get tired of the “wait ’til next year” mentality?

Cigar Dawg,
At the beginning of this season, I was one of those that was calling for Richt’s ouster. After the events of the last few weeks, I’m so happy that we have a coach the caliber of Mark Richt here at our University. When I see what Penn State is going through, I realize that we’re blessed to have a man of Richt’s character leading our program. So we won’t win it all this year. I’m okay with that as I’ve seen this team grow by leaps and bounds this year. Coaches coaching kids up, players playing with fire, a defense to be feared, and Aaron Murray distributing the ball to a plethora of receivers. I’ll be happy with what we have and ask for forgiveness for my earlier foolishness. I hope Coach Richt can forgive the Bulldog faithful that doubted him and didn’t appreciate what he brings to this university. I’ll take him over Joe Pa, Saban, Meyer and others any day.

Some none Dawg fans are trying to minimize our win but when evaluating Auburn this win was against a very good team and Georgia players should feel proud of a complete domination of a good team. Auburn is a very young team that still has to find a QB and Mosley may be him but Newton played so much last year Mosley didn’t get any game experience so he had to use this year for that.
Auburn lost to #1 LSU, #8 Arkansas and #9 Clemson. They beat # 13 South Carolina. Don’t tell me that Auburn is not a good team. They just have the schedule from hell this year and as a young team don’t have a good record . A lot of the top 25 teams could not beat Auburn.

The Dawgs haven’t played a game like this since the SEC Championship game against LSU in 2005. And this was much more dominating. I watched a replay of the 2007 Blackout against Auburn and this was far more impressive. Auburn actually was in that game until the 4th quarter. Auburn was buried by the middle of the 2nd quarter. I haven’t seen the Dawgs dominate a game like this against a good SEC opponent in a long time. Maybe ever. Yes ever. The 82 Dawgs were probably the best overall team we ever fielded and they crushed UF 44-0 that year. This might be on that level. UF wasn’t ranked and lost to Vandy that year.
Yes this was a statement game… the statement is “it ain’t over til it’s over”. Believe Bulldog Nation. Richt’s Dogs believe and we should too.

If Georgia gives an award for the person most valuable to their football team this year, the award should go to whoever determined the schedule. The Dawgs are the only team in the SEC East who did not play a single game against the top three in the West — the only SEC East team not playing even a single game against LSU, Alabama or Arkansas. But that will change in the SEC championship game, in which the Dawgs’ weaknesses will be exposed. Nevertheless, great game today, Georgia. I had expected it to be much closer.

T-Dawg

November 13th, 2011

This is a great day for all Dawgs to celebrate, and there are lots of reasons to feel good about UGA football. This is the first year we have beaten Tennessee, Florida and Auburn in the same year in god knows how long – whether they are down or not, that is something to celebrate. Our defense gave up 12 yards rushing combined to those three teams. I have watched every play of every game this year, and I think the defense is as good as anybody in the country (so do the know-it-alls calling the game who see our defense up close). Combine that with the offense, especially Murray and the O Line, playing like they have been the last couple of games, and I have to say I am very proud of our team and think they can compete with anybody. Even if you go back to the two losses, I didn’t go away from those feeling hopeless, like I have frequently since the 2008 Alabama game. This is a team that real fans should believe in. And to freaking demolish Auburn feels great, especially after last year’s game.

On a different note, people who continue to argue that Mark Richt should go must be truly delusional. It’s easy to get frustrated when things aren’t going well, like the last couple of seasons. But if you look at the man’s body of work at Georgia, who else has done or could do what he has done? Who should Georgia get to replace him? Aside from 09 and 10 teams, he consistently has a nationally relevant program that averages 10+ wins a season. He got to 100 wins faster than Dooley or a slew of other coaching legends, and even with the mediocre 09 and 10 years included, he is one of the winningest coaches active today. Combine that with his commitment to high moral standards (especially relevant this week with the Penn State garbage going down), and it is difficult to think of anyone who could possibly be a better person to lead the University of Georgia’s football program. To say he is a failure or that the program is doomed because there have been a couple of less impressive years shows that you must not know much about college football, nor could you consider yourself a “fan” (i.e. “supporter”) of UGA football. Fans stick with teams and support the kids playing on the teams even if they are terrible (ask Tech fans, they can relate). This team is NOT terrible – I think they are pretty good. They are young and getting better every time they play, and they have the only guy I would want in charge as their coach.

for all of you who thought Coach Friend was not good enough, you should eat crow, and eat it good for a while. Coach Searles was way over rated as a recruiter and as a coach. he may have worked some magic a few years ago with freshmen playing, but overall he was not good and a negative influence on the program. Look how Texas is doing now and in the future. Coach Friend has done well and will continue to shine.

If Cigar Dawg is a Dawg Fan – We need to void his/her season tickets and excommunicate him/her from the Dawg Nation!
What you guys need to remember is any year during Richt’s tenure that we have had a stout defense, we have had a championship caliber team. OKIE DAWG,

I didn’t think we had to pull for the Gators so I am glad they lost simply for one reason.if nothing else. A certain Gator fan that always has crap to say about the DAWGS on here, named SSIGator or some such nonsense for a name. It was hard to pick a winner though, because I really dislike Spurrier and think he is really classless. I didn’t think we would need the Gators help for anything anyway. I just felt these DAWGS were going to defend their home turf. I just didn’t realize they were going to beat them as bad as they did.
If Spurrier had the kind of lead UGA had after the first half over Auburn, he would have just kept the heat on the second half and tried to score 70 points or more against a team, obviously beaten after the first 30 minutes. CMR showed class, by throwing I think just two second half passes and trying to keep the score down. The players showed real class also, as you didn’t see a lot of taunting like you did at first from the Auburn players. After the first half, you could look in their eyes and on the sidelines, and they knew it was going to be a really long night.
Congratulations to the DAWGS. It was a well deserved win, make that dominating win.

Finally! Complete game!

For the first time in three years I can say that game was well coached as we out coached the other guy!!!! The defense had been outstanding but finally CMR and Bobo offensive game plan looked outstanding. Very good game plan!

Murry finally has a good game against a ranked team….

I must say though that the receivers help him out as many of the long passes they had to come back to…..man our young receivers look good!

Is it just me or did anyone else say to themselves that we finally had a well coached game?

Wow, Georgia has like 1200 yards of offense the last 2 weeks. They could have scored 70 but Richt took his foot off the gas pedal. By far, Georgia will be LSU’s toughest game left. THAT will be their national championship game not the BCS game.

GT Bob: Here is Virginia Tech’s Schedule: If your premise is that Georgia hasn’t beaten a good football team. You I make the same argument (you can frankly make the same argument about Virginia Tech – and this isn’t meant to trash Tech – it isn’t clear what kind of team Tech has). Who have they beat? And if Auburn is a bad team – then who has Clemson beat? Virginia Tech?

At the end of the day – Tech will finally have the chance to prove that this run (likely to be a 9 game winning streak) is because of the competition then how good this team has become. If Georgia does manage to win – will it then be “well, we do not have a good football team”?

Good luck with Duke. See you on the flats in a couple of weeks.
