Georgia-Auburn: No longer a ‘friendly’ rivalry?

John Jenkins and the Georgia defense need to keep Auburn's running game in check. (University of Georgia)

John Jenkins and the Georgia defense need to keep Auburn's running game in check. (University of Georgia)

Vince Dooley, an Auburn grad who made UGA his home, likes to refer to the Georgia-Auburn rivalry as “feuding cousins,” but there’s always been a sizable contingent in the Bulldog Nation that thinks more like freshman running back Isaiah Crowell, who said this week, “I never liked Auburn. Point blank, I never liked them.”

After last year’s contentious game — what with Nick Fairley’s unpunished dirty play, Gene Chizik stirring it up on the sideline during the fracas at the end of the game and assistant coach Trooper Taylor and rent-a-quarterback Cam Newton strutting around like playground bullies — a lot of UGA fans no longer view it as a “friendly” rivalry.

Has Georgia-Auburn gotten uglier? Is it still feuding cousins or pure hate now? I put that question to fans following the Junkyard Blawg’s Facebook page and Twitter feed this week.

Darrell Huckaby said the rivalry “changed forever last year because of the dirty play of Nick Fairley and the thuggish sideline demeanor of Trooper Taylor. No longer a friendly rivalry between conference cousins.”

Dawn Garland dates the change further back than last year. “I can’t forget when Reggie Brown was knocked unconscious in a deliberate helmet to helmet collision in Auburn in 2004. There was no penalty flag thrown and that set the tone for the 2 teams for the last several years.”

Cory Organ rates it “pure hate” now and Jesse Murrah agrees, while Chip Kash says, “Most of us are just tired of Auburn being treated by the NCAA as if they are teflon coated.”

Kevin McCann worries that, “after the dirty plays last year, this one could get ugly.”

Let’s hope not. The only really “chippy” game so far for Georgia was Vandy, and the Dogs didn’t handle that well. Better to take the business-like approach that worked this year in Jacksonville than to get too amped up over how things went last year.

The Georgia fans who have the closest view of the rivalry are those who live over the border and must put up with the Barners and Bammers on a daily basis. One of them is my longtime friend John Sosebee, who lives in Anniston with his wife Lisa, who is of the War Eagle persuasion. Or Turkey Buzzard, as John puts it. I asked him what folks over there were saying about this week’s game.

Auburn fans, John reported, “are still busy cackling about the LSU win and Bama’s drop to #4 and how their faithfuls have been momentarily silenced for the first time this season.” But, he said, some Tiger fans have admitted to him that “Auburn’s fickle defense and lack of a leader at QB is gonna make them a much different opponent than they were last year with Cambo leading them on the field, blowing kisses at everybody.”

As for John, he’s “getting psyched up for this Saturday’s feast of Turkey Buzzard stew.”

When asked this week what I expect out of this game, I’ve said I think the double-digit spread favoring the Dogs is kind of ridiculous for a conference game between two ranked teams, but if Georgia doesn’t cough it up or commit a bunch of special teams gaffes, I think they should be able to handle Auburn.

Under Gus Malzahn, the highest-paid assistant in college athletics, the uptempo Auburn offense is always dangerous, and it will be important for the Dogs’ defense to contain power back Michael Dyer up the middle and speedster Onterio McCalebb on the outside in the running game, while keeping tight coverage on wide receiver Emory Blake and big tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen (who killed us last year). Sophomore Clint Moseley only has a couple of games under his belt as the starter at quarterback, so it behooves Jarvis Jones and company to get in his face constantly from the start.

A good day for Aaron Murray probably means a win for Georgia. (Associated Press)

A good day for Aaron Murray probably means a win for Georgia. (Associated Press)

Offensively, the Dogs should be able to move the ball on an Auburn defense that ranks near the bottom of the conference in most categories. Getting Crowell and Malcolm Mitchell back is big, but I think how Georgia fares will come down to how Aaron Murray plays. If it’s a tight game, he should be the difference.

What’s your view of this year’s installment in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry?

BULLDOG BITES

Coach Dooley will be meeting fans, posing for pictures and autographing copies of his books from 3 to 4:30 Friday at the Red Zone, 155 E. Clayton St. in Athens. … Jake Scott, one of the most exciting Bulldogs players ever, will be honored on the field during Saturday’s game for his upcoming induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. Scott becomes the 12th Georgia player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. … Athens’ Hotel Indigo is holding a 1980s era “Bulldog Legends” event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. before the game and for two hours right after the game Saturday in connection with the “1980 Dawgs” DVD set. Scott Woerner, who was at the Red Zone last week, will be on hand and organizers say some other 1980 players also might show up. There’s no admission charge and a cash bar will be open in the lobby area of the hotel. In addition, an exhibit of Georgia football photos by Wingate Downs is being held in the Indigo’s art gallery and runs through late December. … McFarlane Toys has announced its fourth series of college football action figures is due out in late June, and UGA’s Champ Bailey is in the lineup, along with Ricky Williams of Texas, Sam Bradford of Oklahoma, Tim Tebow of Florida, Cam Newton of Auburn, Marcus Allen of USC and Peyton Manning of Tennessee. McFarlane released a cool Hines Ward figure a couple of years ago.

Friendly smendly. All that went bye bye last year.

They started it. It’s time for Georgia to finish it.

Probably won’t get to tomorrow because the game will be too close but Richt needs to kick a FG or go for 2 when up by 10 late in the game, like under a minute.

He won’t do it though because he is not the type to do it.

Erk would have sent the 5th string in last year and Fairley would have been walking now with a permanent limp.

This is no longer friendly at all

Are you kidding me?! We have NEVER had a “friendly rivalry” with Auburn! I mean, the fans aren’t as obnoxious as the ones in Florida, but there have been too many heartbreakers on both sides for this to ever be a “friendly” game. I guess it only seems friendly now because UGA hasn’t had anything riding on this game in a number of years.

First of all, it’s the oldest rivalry in The South, yet the people you interview can only recall back to 2004? How about the battles against AU when they had a running back named Bo Jackson?

Bill, with all of the history of the two schools, the crossover coaches, and great games between the two teams I kind of get the feeling you ‘phoned’ this article in.

Big test for Dawgs defense. I think if we can keep them under 150 on the ground, we have a good chance to beat them. The offense is probably going to have to score over 20 to give us the best chance to win. Certainly having Crowell and Mitchell back is going to help. Would love to see B. Smith used on 4-5 offensive plays while Crowell is getting a rest.

The dawgs have made this into a huge recruiting weekend by hanging in there and beating the teams we were supposed to beat and then getting a big victory over FL last weekend. The recruits should see a rockin’ Sanford and a team competing for the chance to play in the conference championship which is very important as Juniors and Seniors see what it is all about ‘tween the hedges.

In the Pat Dye era, UGA was not expected to win at Auburn BUT we did with our highly recruited but never seen on the field QB ?? (name forgotten) and we stopped them on 4 tries at the goal line to win.

The AU ground crews opened up their irrigation cannons and BLASTED THE UGA crowd and one or maybe several elderly UGA fans were hurt pretty badly. THAT to me is what it is all about.

My frosh year in 1967, four of us had seats in Sanford BUT we sat in the AU section with firiends from AU and during warm ups, a AU senior or maybe AU grad, upper cut one of my UGA friends and knocked out two lower teeth. My 6′4″ 225 lb. cousin jumped in and it took about 4 police to get him off of that much older AU guy and two other AU guys in suits, as my cuz was whuppin em but good ……………all three of the AUG guys were hurting pretty bad after he was done. Ambulance took my toothless pal and two AU guys off to St. Mary’s. APD told three of us to go to another section and about 5 AU guys and dates were thrown out of Sanford.
My cousin? Oh, he was a grinning and just fine with just swollen knuckles. He remained in the stadium with us.

Typical rivalry stuff. It used to be that a little bit of self-control was the honorable conduct to which to aspire. That quality is no longer esteemed or expected by society. Don’t know if it can be called a “civil” society anymore.

Yes, Cam Newton was a “Rent-a-quarterback”. I doubt he even went to class while he was at Auburn. He had no intention of staying there more than one year. Auburn wasn’t the best team in the nation last year. They were the luckiest. They weren’t ‘better’ than LSU, Alabama, or Oregon. They got a lot of breaks. They could have EASILY lost 6 games last year, ones that they won by less than a TD.

I’m not a bitter UGA fan either – I’m just calling it like I saw it.

I’ve never understood how anyone could take any pride in the UGA football team. Look at their history for the past forty years: how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the remedial studies scam, the Jim Harrick sleaze, the DUIs in the athletic office (not just Damon Evans), the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school label (for the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and sickening as it is, I don’t see many alumni and fans demanding an end to this sleazy activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school that decent people despise and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it ever end? Not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is the biggest hypocrite in the United States. And even with the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still doesn’t win the SEC.

So you’re paying him $3.5 million a year to be champions, but he can’t even win the SEC East. So why do you keep paying him millions of dollars year after year?

Just wondering.

I, for one, can say the only team I am interested in reading about is UGA. DL needs to take care of the game first. If they get clean hits on the QB and the RB, pick’em up and slam into the ground. McCalebb is an outside runner and the S or the CB is going to have to step up. The key is to play defense in Auburn’s backfield. OL must be a big factor. Murray needs time to throw and Crowell needs room to run. With a lot of crossing patterns to confuse that Auburn secondary will leave some WRs wide open. Murray must be accurate and stop overthrowing the receivers.

Dawg Dawg Dawg 11:16 – I agree with you, and thank you for a reasonable post, unlike most I am seeing here. Bill, you really went for the lowest common denominator on this one and that is very disappointing. I thought you were better than that and I still do but this time you failed all of us by trying to incite the riot. I am attending the game tomorrow, although not without some concern. I will be there with my Auburn colors on, as you might expect. I have always had great respect for Georgia and it’s fans and have always had a great time with Georgia fans in Athens for the past twenty years but this year I’m not so sure and I am going to the game tomorrow with the intention to be ready for anything. I am quite physically capable of handling a situation if things get out of hand and I will not hesitate to do so if attacked. Of course I hope that NOTHING of the sort takes place and that we can all enjoy a great game but the things that you have written along with some other things that I have read from others is forcing me to approach tomorrow with a different attitude. If there are fights and someone gets hurt you need to know that incendiary words such as the ones you have written will have played a part and must be at least partially responsible for what could take place. There is no place for such talk as yours and others. The situation at Penn State this week should make all of us take a step back and reassess. It’s just a game. You and your ilk are perpetuating the madness and if someone gets hurt tomorrow it should at least partially be on your heads for aggravating the circumstances. There is just no excuse for that and deep down you know it. Let’s have a good game tomorrow and NOTHING else. War Eagle.

Since I didn’t play college football, I guess I can’t have an opinion. And I definitely can’t stand the pressure, of course. Nevermind that I have a wife and two kids to support, a job with aggressive deadlines, and the ability to embrace the regular stresses life throws at me. Oh, poor, poor me.

1. JoePa is fired amid a sex scandal.
2. Georgia is ranked 14 in the country and has not beaten a ranked opponent or a team with a winning record.

I’m not sure which is more shocking.

JoePa is a crazy old man who only cared about the number of games he won.

UGA, well they have talent but no coaches.

Auburn players dish out cheap shots, UGA players dish out cheap shots, Florida players dish out cheap shots, even Vandy players dish out cheap shots.

Bias is always a part of any fan’s argument, so noone will ever truly agree that the players on his or her team were also at fault…just easier to deflect right?

While I thought last year was just nasty on Auburn’s part – we’ll call it an aberration. Like Georgia – Auburn folks are good people. Like Georgia – Auburn has some fans that their fan base would just assume do with out. You look past that – and you look at all the tremendous games between the two schools. Looking forward to a GREAT game.

Do you thUGA folks aspire to act like Bammers? I’ll give you a hint, they have some right to act like fools (and still have some respect from us and everyone else) because Alabama’s accomplished a lot recently (in addition to their storied history). We haven’t done so bad either. UGA on the other hand…….

You may well clinch the SEC Least tomorrow. If you do, I’ll be waiting for the inevitable explosion of classlessness that ensues both on the field and from your fans. Being from Alabama, UGA was always an afterthought to me, but I’m learning pretty quickly that even though your bite is historically weak your bark definitely fits the SEC’s classy atmosphere…

A few predictions for tomorrow’s game:
1. Jarvis Jones gets 3 more sacks.
2. Isaiah Crowell finally breaks a long run enroute to scoring 2 TD’s.
3. Aaron Murray throws for 250 yards and 2 TD’s.
4. Auburn only rushes for 90 yards.
5. Auburn uses 3 different QB’s to no avail.
6. Dawgs win 35-14.
7. Florida beats USC by 4.
8. Georgia wins the east.

UGA needs to come out of the tunnel with blood in their eyes. Chizit is the still the head thug and he isn’t going to change. We need to set the tone early that we aren’t going to be intimidated. Last year we cowered like a bunch of wimps while those hoodlums took cheap shot after cheap shot at our players.

Last year when Fairley was running amok, I said that UGA should have run a chop block at Fairley on the next play after his first of many cheap shots on Murray. The message should have been clear. You take a cheap shot and we will return the shot. I bet it would have put an end to the crap from Fairley before he escalated it with each “turning of the other cheek”. Ga offense gives up a pick six plus extra point as Murray seems to always have the jitters in big games.
Ga defense plays pretty good, gives up 1 TD and 2 field goal.
Ga not so special teams give up six points plus the extra point on a return for a score, and a field goal after a long run back.

Everyone in the state of Georgia knows why you go to Auburn: your parents went there or you couldn’t get into Georgia or Georgia Tech. Auburn knows this also and they cover their pain by drawing greater levels of self-worth from football, sadly for them, apart from last year, Georgia has been steadily dominating in the series.

[...] After last year’s contentious game — what with Nick Fairley’s unpunished dirty play,Gene Chizik stirring it up on the sideline during the fracas at the end of the game and assistant coach Trooper Taylor and rent-a-quarterback Cam Newton strutting around like playground bullies — a lot..{Read More} [...]

What player was suspended last yea for dirty play, Nik Fairley or Ben Jones?

Answer, Ben Jones.

Ben Jones is a dirty player. UGA plays dirty. They started the fight last year and per the no leaving sidelines rule in a fight (that only the well coached Auburn team followed btw) UGA should have had a team the next week. Richt complained to the SEC about Fairley but after the meeting backed down… probably after the SEC showed tape of UGA and Jones playing dirty and starting off with a 15 yard personal foul that Richt knew to walk away.

We are the defending national champions, something UGA will never be. You’re jealous and were jealous going into the game last year and got your tiny @@@ handed to you. And you can’t stand it.

Our biggest advantage over Auburn in my opinion is the passing game. Murray is good and while he’s not great, he is more than capable of burning Auburn’s secondary, just as he did in last year’s game. Auburn’s best chance at winning is if they can get production off play-action passes. If Moseley has a good game, they very well may win. But I don’t think he’s good enough to have much success on Georgia’s solid secondary.

About 80% of the blame for last years game goes to the inability of the UGA offensive line to protect Aaron Murray. I blame the fool that’s out in Texas now. Searles may be the most hyped and least performing position coach in the history of the University System of Georgia

We like Auburn. Most of those players are from Georgia. It is unfortunate they didn’t get recruited to play for Georiga. Either wasn’t good enough, couldn’t make the grades or they got caught up in the Scam euphoria but, it is just as well. The world still needs Game Wardens and Hog farmers. Everybody can’t be business leaders, millionaires and sterling citizens. There is a reason why Alabama thinks you are all white trash and most of them valid :)

Just moved to Atlanta from the UK (England not Kentucky) and have been really taken by the passion of the college football game particularly in the South. That being said, it appears that in the past several yrs Alabama, LSU and Florida have been the elite teams and have each one several championships. What I find amusing is the level of noise and banter that comes from the Georgia side. They seem to engage in much more trash talking than do the actual teams that have excelled. Georgia reminds me of the Man United fans in England the difference being that Man United actually wins championships. If Georgia beats both Auburn and LSU then they can talk all they like. Until they sort that out which I do not anticipate they will continue to be viewed below the other clubs which have hoisted trophies.

This writer, and this fan-base, follow the only major SEC team that hasn’t won a national title over the past five years. OF COURSE they are bitter and crazed. They dreamed that Auburn would get hammered for the Cam Newton saga and now that it is over and Auburn was cleared, they have a hard time dealing with that reality…so they type silly and childish things like “rent-a-quarterback” to make themselves feel better. Truth is, Georgia hasn’t won a national title lately and Auburn has. REALLY is as simple as that.

Do you not hear a thing anyone is saying? Most of us liked Auburn in the past. They were my second favorite SEC team. That changed last year. Not because Auburn won the championship, but because of the way they played. We find it difficult to believe that Auburn fans not only thought Fairley’s play was okay….but that they actually championed his attempts to injure our QB. We were shocked that they would boo an injured UGA player……because they didn’t want him to “slow down” Auburn’s attempts to run up the score.

Believe what you want dude, but I do not have any animosity toward Alabama, USC, the Vols, LSU or even the Gators.

It wasn’t/isn’t about who has won a championship. It’s about dirty play, poor sportsmanship and the fans who support it.

The Journal-Constitution studied 54 public universities, “including the members of the six major Bowl Championship Series conferences and other schools whose teams finished the 2007-08 season ranked among the football or men’s basketball top 25.”

We all suspect that big-time student athletes sometimes aren’t the best and the brightest academically.

Some highlights:

Football players average 220 points lower on the SAT than their classmates. Men’s basketball was 227 points lower.
University of Florida won the prize for biggest gap between football players and the student body, with players scoring 346 points lower than their peers.
Georgia Tech had the nation’s best average SAT score for football players, 1028 of a possible 1600, and best average high school GPA, 3.39 of a possible 4.0. But because its student body is apparently very smart, Tech’s football players still scored 315 SAT points lower than their classmates.
UCLA, which has won more NCAA championships in all sports than any other school, had the biggest gap between the average SAT scores of athletes in all sports and its overall student body, at 247 points.
Some “universal truths,” according to the Journal-Constitution:

All 53 schools for which football SAT scores were available had at least an 88-point gap between team members’ average score and the average for the student body.

Schools with the highest admissions standards, such as Georgia Tech, the University of Virginia, the University of California-Berkeley, UCLA, and the University of North Carolina, had the biggest gaps between the SAT averages for athletes and the overall student body.

Football players performed 115 points worse on the SAT than male athletes in other sports.

The differences between athletes’ and non-athletes’ SAT scores were less than half as big for women (73 points) as for men (170).

Many schools routinely used a special admissions process to admit athletes who did not meet the normal entrance requirements. More than half of scholarship athletes at the University of Georgia, the University of Wisconsin, Clemson University, UCLA, Rutgers University, Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University were special admits. . . At Georgia, for instance, 73.5 percent of athletes were special admits compared with 6.6 percent of the student body as a whole.

Vince it is because at UGA the players take classes that my 10th grade niece can pass right now. i know she could be taking sophomore level class the UGA football and basketball players take.
At Tech the professors still try to run students off. At UGA they bend over backwards to keep the Caleb King’s playing for as long as they can. A Tech Diploma is difficult to obtain. UGA diplomas are as easy to get as a GED.

I really hope last year’s game, at the barn, is fresh on the minds of ALL UGA’s players! *U’s thugs (aka Fairley, T. Bell, etc.) were coached to do what they did. The defensive coordinator, obviously, encouraged dirty hits on QB’s… after all, Fairley injured the QB’s from Clemson, Arkansas, LSU (both of them), and UGA. He continued with those dirty hits, from the start to the finish of the season, (until the ref at the Iron Bowl penalized him and let him know that kind of crap would not be tolerated in Tuscaloosa, as it ALWAYS was tolerated in *uburn). He was never reprimanded or benched by his coaches for the dirty hit to Murray’s spine or the dirty hit to Murray’s knee (even though numerous complaints were submitted to the SEC and to Chizik and the President of *uburn asking that he be punished. Nor was T’sharvin (sp?) Bell reprimanded for throwing McElroy on his head in the Iron Bowl & giving him a concussion (a totally UNNECESSARY hit because he already had McElroy sacked). So, it is very obvious to me that these kinds of “targeting to injure & remove opposing QB’s from the game” hits were both taught & encouraged by the *uburn coaches. Therefore, I think UGA’s players should hit *uburn’s players as hard as they can on EVERY play. I don’t care if there is 56 seconds left in the game, and Georgia is up 45-3…they need to have NO mercy on those thugs. It doesn’t matter if 24 Tigers graduated…it is still the same THUG coaching staff that allowed this behavior last year. It is still *uburn…a team with the same mindset as last year…they just aren’t as good, and they don’t have Cammy, their hired mule. They need to be humiliated, and sent home with their tails between their legs! GO DAWGS, ROLL TIDE, & GEAUX TIGERS! *uburn sucks and they always will.

The point of this article and blog was to remind of us the behavior of Auburn’ coaches, players and fans last year. I take it you think it was perfectly okay for Fairley to spear Murray in the back by lowering his helmet, that it was okay for him to intentionally grind his helmet into Murray’s chin to cut it, that it was just fine to direct his helmet into Murray’s knee to cause an injury that made Murray leave the game and that it was okay to fight, go to mid field, pose and high five a coach and that it was okay for Auburn fans to boo an injured Georgia player…..

A school that will live in infamy... and it's in Athens

November 11th, 2011
9:15 pm

It’s common knowledge and an unquestioned fact that UGA head football coach Mark Richt has brought shame on the state of Georgia and made an embarrassing laughingstock of the state’s largest university. Even the most avid UGA fans understand this even when they won’t acknowledge it, bless their hearts. :-)

The most embarrassing thing is the win-at-any-price mentality of Richt, which has effectively made UGA a football f-a-c-t-o-r-y, with cheating, recruiting of low-intelligence jerks who barely graduated from high school, and tolerating immoral and unethical activities by both players and coaches. Even with all this, he still can’t win.

Richt is a product of the lawless environments of the University of Miami and Florida State University, where he learned well how to conduct himself in the most tawdry way, while pretending to the world to be a saint. Make no mistake – Richt is in coaching purely for the millions of dollars that have been wasted on him, and the millions more he will add until someone in Athens has the integrity and intestinal fortitude to run him out of town.

A truly shameful situation, especially since all Georgians, including UGA alumni and fans, have to live under this shadow of infamy.

me first being a auburn grad and a huge fan, ive been thru some tough moments with these guys. yes, there has been teams in our past who have done dirty things (including fairly last year) but to me, things like that are what a rivalry is about. in 2004 i witnessed a less talented undefeated auburn squad beat what i thought georgia’s most talented team of the 2000s. i look forward to november, every year, whether we are a good team or not. teams that arent supposed to win always do the unthinkable. we have alot of growing pains but dont take these guys lightly, they have showed flashes of greatness although theyre 2-3yrs younger than most teams in the league. remember 2006? we were 8-2 i dont remember uga record but in the closing minutes, it was a shootout. we were without a doubt the worst 2 lose team in the country, but managed to find ways to win. guys, my point is, i believe georgia starts out strong but once the tigers settle in, its ours to lose. georgia has played a very very easy schedule up to this point and has lost the games they were supposed to. this makes players and fans believe they are better than they truly are. our guys have lost to 3 top ten teams (handidly) but in all those games we beat ourselves. georgia is not in those teams league. the one team we have for comparison would be the south carolina game. we both know the outcome of our teams against them. that was the last game our team was healthy. even eith our team being healthy in that game our defense was looking for their identity and has since established it. good luck dawgs but i believe auburn wins 27-21… we will take care of business against samford and play a much better alabama team that we will play better than we did against lsu but still lose and play in the outback bowl. i will pull for you guys in the sec chmpionship game

You are the closest to a voice of reason I have heard from an Auburn fan in a while.

I,too believe Auburn will prevail tomorrow as they are the slightly better team….but I sure hope I am wrong.

I think what Bill King’s article and this blog were supposed to be about was this: Many Georgia fans used to feel pretty good about Auburn. Yes, they were rivals, but there wasn’t the hatred that existed with …say….Tech or Florida.

That changed last year. The dirty play…the actions of the Auburn players, coaches and fans was beyond anything we had ever witnessed. After the game, the continual support by Auburn fans for the behavior was also disheartening.

It changed the minds of many regarding Auburn.

im not here to talk sh!$ because, obviuosly, my team does not deserve to be talked up. ive just been reading this blog and seems to me georgia’s brain is fixated on one game which in my mind is a short memory span. these games are always the best of the season, even with a blow out loss. most our recruits come from the state of georgia and that is why i belive the fans actually hate auburn more. its a no-brainer to know that georgia is the most talented state per capa. us living right on the border would make us idiots if we didnt recruit into you guys land

It would not have mattered a bit had Georgia won.
It would not have mattered a bit had Auburn not won the NC.
It would not have mattered if Georgia went 13 – 0 or 0-13 last year or was 0-9 or 9-0 this year.

What mattered was the extreme dirty play,…… the unsportsmanlike behavior of the coaches, players and fans….the deliberate attempts (finally successful!) to injure players….the booing of injured Georgia players by the Auburn fans (they didn’t like that his injury might get in the way of the Tigers/ War Eagles running up the score) and the ever continuing support for those actions by the Auburn fan base.

That’s what matters?

Why is that so difficult to understand?

Georgia got beat by a lot of people last year. You don’t hear or see this resentment toward the other schools that beat us. Doesn’t that tell you something?

keeryb, you should do some homework.. in the last 20 years only one team has 3 undefeated teams (auburn) in the last 30 years we have 6.
The Auburn Tigers football team represents Auburn University in college football as a member of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision, competing in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Since its beginnings in 1892, Auburn football has won 2 national championships, 11 conference championships, 7 divisional championships, 7 perfect seasons, and 3 Heisman Trophy winners. Auburn is the 13th winningest program in NCAA Div1A history, and has compiled over 700 victories, while appearing in 36 postseason bowl games. Auburn is currently 5th in Bowl Winning Percentage. Auburn’s home stadium is Jordan-Hare Stadium, which becomes Alabama’s fifth largest city on gamedays with a capacity of 87,451. Auburn competes in the Iron Bowl, one of the fiercest rivalries in college football, against Alabama. Auburn’s winningest coach is Ralph “Shug” Jordan, who led the Tigers from 1951 to 1975, and won the school’s first national championship in 1957. The team is currently coached by Gene Chizik, who was hired on December 13, 2008. They are the reigning national champions after defeating the Oregon Ducks 22-19 in the BCS National Championship Game on January 10, 2011.

Over the seasons, other polls and organizations have named Auburn national champions,[14] although none of these championships are recognized by the school:

1910, 1913, 1914, 1958, 1983, 1993, 2004
The AP Poll did not begin selecting a champion until 1936 nor the AFCA Coaches Poll until 1950, so many national champion titles previous to those date were awarded retroactively. The undefeated 1913 and 1914 teams coached by Mike Donahue were some of the best defenses in Auburn history. In fact, the 1914 squad allowed zero points all season, outscoring opponents 193-0. The 1983 team featuring Bo Jackson went 11–1 and finished the season by beating Michigan in the Sugar Bowl. Despite the team entering the game ranked third in the AP and both teams ranked ahead losing their bowl games, Auburn was jumped by fifth ranked Miami for the AP National Title. The 1993 team was ineligible to play in a postseason bowl game due to NCAA-imposed sanctions for paying Eric Ramsey[15] and finished ranked fourth by the AP. The undefeated 2004 squad (13–0) finished second in the AP and Coaches Top 25 polls, but the team was awarded the 2004 Fanspoll.com People’s National Champion title.[16] After USC was stripped of the FWAA title, the organization discussed awarding the Grantland Rice Award to Auburn but ultimately voted not to award a trophy for 2004.[17] On June 6, 2011, the BCS officially stripped USC of its 2004 national championship, stating that there would be no champion for the 2004 season. Nonetheless, Auburn acknowledges the 2004 title, along with the 1913, 1983 and 1993 titles, in its media guide.[18]

Anyway, UGA has not been a significant (look that word up, mutts) since 1980. I guess they are just frustrated bc they SHOULD get all the best recruits in the state, yet continue to display mediocrity year after year. Sad, really. Oh well, wear the silly black jerseys. That may help. Hahahaha!

@ Troy and 2010

Most UGA fans do not cling to the idea that there was anything shady about Can Newton going to Auburn when he got booted out of Florida.

Our animosity toward Auburn is merely the result of the behavior of Auburn players, coaches and fans during last year’s game.

I remember talking to one Auburn fan after the game about Fairley deliberately trying to end Murray’s career (if not life!). His response was, “It’s the job of the defense to try to hurt the QB and knock him out of the game so we don’t have to play against your best.”

That was a real eye opener for me.

in fact, one could argue that georgia is one of the highest underachieving schools in the history of college football. mark richt has had a stable of talent, a state with the best athletes, but just cant get over the hump. he should have at least 4 undefeated seasons and sec championships in his tenure. whereas auburn, has highly over achieved. since pat dye we havent had acoach who would recruit inside the top ten year in year out until now. tubberville was really really good at getting teams ready for top 10 opponents but horrible about letting them play down to lesser teams

@ Still

kerryb has a bit of a point there. The CORE curriculum is the same at all state colleges. That is why you have a lot of students transfer to Tech after two years at, say, Georgia Southern…or to Georgia after two years at GCSU. I suppose it could be argued that Calculus I is a different animal at Tech than it is at Georgia Southern….but really, the courses at the three “flagship” universities (Tech, UGA and GSU) are supposed to be very similar. First of all, bedwetting dawg fools… anyone who has followed this rivalry for more than 2 years knows its normally a good clean game with tremendous play on both sides. So stow the idea that this is now evil Auburn meanies against the forces of good. Those that hate Nick Fairley probably have a reason to. He doesnt play at Auburn any more. Also anybody who hates trooper taylor needs to look at the game film again and his body of work, which is not low class. use Todd Grantham as a comparison, whose body of work in this area is clearly low rent.

Lets just play hard and see what happens. I grew up a dawg fan, then went to Auburn. I have a daughter in the Red Coat band at UGA now. There is familiarity and some “hate” but its the familiar kind…not like Florida or Bama. Lets just move it on down the road. Clemson is not a technical school. It has technical degrees but liberal arts degrees too.
Tech doesn’t have good grad rates, but the players graduate about on average with all students. See tech professors still run kids out of school. Tech (unlike UGA) doesn’t have a sign like McDonald’s with over 30 billion served degrees flashing under the UGA sign. Richt would not have allowed a player to lie on top of another and gash his chin intentionally with his face mask.He would not allow a player to continuously drive a QB in to the ground on late hits. He would not have kept a player on the field who blindsided a quarterback by lowering his helmet and rushing headfirst, late, into his spine. He would have not have approved of a player intentionally knocking a QB out of a game by driving his helmet into the knee of the quarterback…late. I can’t see him allowing one of his assistants to high five a player who is posibng at midfield after punching a player.

Yep, a bama fan did it, and as I understand it, he’s somewhat of an outcast among the bama nation. I’ve never heard of any bama fans celebrating it, like the UGA fan on here. Now, like your eyes were opened by one idiot AU fan, should I now think that all UGA fans want to pee on, or make firewood out of the oak trees? In other words, should I change my opionion of all UGA fans based on the ignorant ramblings of one UGA moron?

why

November 12th, 2011

@WCE,

Vince

November 12th, 2011
12:48 am

@ why…No, but if you see a stadium full of UGA fans celebrating the antics of a person like Nick Fairley and then read hundreds of comments celebrating his actions….them , yes….feel free to judge UGA fans that way. I was swayed by watching last year’s game and hearing the fans cheer an injured (deliberately) Murray and then boo another UGA player laying injured on the field. They swayed my thinking more than one fan’s comment. I can discount one person. Thousands are a little more difficult.

UGA fans are crazy. Taylor was trying to keep Nick from being suspended for the Bama game that’s all. Yes Nick did hit Murray late and was flagged for it. You guys tried to cheap shot by sending in some backup to try and start a fight. Auburn is a solid team and if you think Mosley is easy to rattle go look at the LSU game nothing but poise under fire and the UGA front 7 is nothing close to LSU’s. Auburn has trouble with spread type running attacks, but power running teams get hit in the face. That what UGA does and it won’t work. AU 35 UGA 24.

Think again!

UGA’s front 7 is just as active as LSU’s. Their front three are actually bigger. Auburn is in a lot of trouble. UGA BIG!

It’s a shame that a storied university like Auburn has to have a player like Nick Fairly who obviously was doing everything he could to mame Aaron Murray in last years game. It’s also a shame the referees as well as the coaches for Auburn didn’t tend to the situation rather than an apparent condonement. Fairly was quite proud of his accomplishments on a helpless player. His kind of play is not even welcome in the NFL. He would have been thrown out of the game and given a hefty fine. Murray, of course, could have sustained a career-ending injury. Hopefully, this won’t happen this year with another player. Fairly is a thug and has no place in football. Yes, football is a rough sport but there are limits to roughness that does not include willful injury to another player. The best retaliation for the Dawgs is simply to play good clean hard fought football and win, no matter if it’s just one point! GO DAWGS!!!!!

Fellow Dawgs and Auburn Fans on this blog some of this stuff you are spouting is quite hilarious. These two schools have always been close- that is why for the most part it has been a friendly and true rivalry. Yes there have been incidences on both sides that sometimes leave you scratching your head but for the most part the games have been hard played and then you move on to the real hated rival the next week or so. For the Dawgs it is Tech and for Auburn it is the Tide. I just hope that every year it is a hard fought but clean game.

FIRST, Whoever has told the “Bulldog Nation” that this has EVER been a “friendly rivalry” has SIMPLY NEVER been to a UGA-Auburn game….Scumbags of ALL scumbags……they pull ONE out of their HANKEY last year for the FIRST time in their 118 existence (1957, they were ON PROBATION…Shocking, I know)….and they are suddenly an SEC power…Auburn, by people who actually follow college football, has NEVER been known as a “POWER!”

I’ll take our 5 NATIONAL TITLES (2 Consensus) and 12 SEC Titles over their 1 and a lot less SEC Titles any day….THAT is TRADITION!!!!!!!!!!

The facts are this. THuga was penalized for more personal fouls against AU in last year’s game than AU was penalized. It was Richt’s THUGS who ran en masse onto the field and tried to start a melee’ between the two teams at the end, when the game was already decided and they knew they were beat. This momma’s boy homer writing for the ajc here is without a doubt one of the most idiotic cry babies I’ve ever read in a major publication.

Get ready mutt fans…you’re about to experience even WORSE pain and suffering today when Auburn knocks you off your pretend pedestal. Not one single win this season over a ranked team with a winning record. The defending national champions will show you thugs what being a true powerhouse program is all about today.

Turning the firehoses on UGA fans digging up our field was very justified. Turning them on the DullDawg fans in the stands was just a bonus.

The rivalry really turned ugly when Richt brought his hoodlum culture with him from FSU. Last year, UGA players were shouting insults from the field before the game even started.

Privately, Auburn players say that Georgia is the dirtiest team they play, year in and year out.

Thank Richt for all the hard feelings.

Friendly rivalry? Read the comments and judge for yourself. As for the game: “Tough day for Auburn,” says Kirk Herbstreit on GameDay. Here’s how it goes down- Dawgs stuff the run, lay back their ears and go after Moseley. Trotter and Frazier better be warming up on the sidelines. Someone said UGA is considered a “power”? since when? How many NC has UGA won the last 30 years? How man SEC titles the last 30 years? How many times has UGA gone UNDEFEATED the last 30 years? This joker was apparently laying down on his crack pipe. Anyway, yes, we’re in a rebuilding year this year, mutts — full of freshmen and sophmores. Thats ok. And our 3 losses came against really really good teams (ya’ll played ANYONE the caliber of LSU, Clemson, or even Arkansas?) So, with your weak schedule, in your weak SEC East, with your hypocritical attitudes, we shall see what happens today! Caution, mutts, HOPE you don’t win the East, bc you will have you mutt buns handed to you by either LSA or Bama! And I will be hollering either “Geaux Tigers!” or (and I NEVER thought I’d say this) “Ross Tide” Bama has a much classier team the the UGA thugs, IMO.

Georgia cannot say anything about other schools players. Just look at the last few years and all those deadbeat players y’all have had with one drunk night or drug arrest after another. Auburn’s problems were of a football nature trying to win a game on the field and your offensive line could not block crap. Lest our memory is short Dawg fans Liberty Bowl and Central Fla. Just play for your team and what it has to win this year. If you dwell on the past it can come back and bite you in the a** and you will not be traveling the short distance from Athens to Atlanta in Dec.

You missed the point entirely. There is no fixation. Simply, you somehow justify your whipping at the hands of Clemson (the posers) and Arkansas. Neither are really, really, good teams. If that makes it more palettable for you, fine. Go with it. It doesn’t however, match up to the reality. Yes LSU is a really, really good team. Yes, they spanked your guys like red headed step children. So, you’ve played and got beaten by one good team. You can attempt to fluff your defeats if you want. Nobody outside of Auburn is buying it

Exactly WHO has UGA beat? The dawgs play 8 games in Georgia with 1 being at Tech. UGA hasn’t had a hard schedule. Do you really want to take that schedule into the Georgia DOME to face LSU? It will be an interesting game today. IF the dawgs lose it will be real bad, but if they win they should. I still don’t know what Vegas saw with the spread. I guess we will see in few hours. Why not stay on topic, is that so difficult? Georgia has beaten almost everyone in the SEC that everyone else has beaten. Why is the schedule such a subject strawman for you? The schedule is what it is, nobody has the ability to change that once the year is in motion, do they? You can scream scheduling from the rooftops and it changes nothing. Nobody knew 5 years ago when the schedule was written up what the status of the teams would be or are you stating that you did? Have you a crystal ball jammed up your @zz? Give scheduling a break. As a Gator, I have to compliment UGA on putting together a great season. While I don’t believe UGA can beat LSU, I now do believe they may have the athleticism to at least compete with LSU. Also, anyone who thinks UGA wouldn’t beat Boise or South Carolina today is just an idiot.

We all tend to look at the uniforms and see what we expect to see based upon the past. But the fact is that UGA has a good quarterback, a very good group of young receivers, and a big, talented defensive line. UGA may very well be on a path back to elite status.

Real feel good game Bill. Rarely have I felt this confident following a Bulldog football victory. I have had issues with Dawg QB Aaron Murray this season but he seemed to grow up before my eyes against Auburn. Love his manly facial brush. Was not a perfect game due to the two lost fumbles but most complete effort by a Mark Richt team since the blowout of heralded supposidly unbeatable Hawaii. No points left on field and off scoreboard at Sanford Stadium. Warmed my heart to see no missed Dawg FGs. Think Russ may even have smiled once or twice on sidelines. Time to take interim tag off the mascot title? Defense surrendered early TD then bottled up visitors completely. Will not say Dawgs can knock off LSU but I am far more optimistic than I was last week. Proud to see Richt show some fire on sidelines. Where has that been? For the first time I have no gripes about Mike Bobo plays which is historic. Boise State lost. South Carolina now also ran. Dawgs have won eight straight. Even if Dawgs win SEC they will be screwed out of BCS championship appearance due to 0-2 start. Why? Rest of country hates SEC. Yankees want SEC title run squashed at all costs. Fair? No! Such is sports. :)

The Auburn-UGA rivalry is a great one. Despite some of the whiners on this board who don’t know a fact from a dog bone. if the rivalry is less than it once was, it is because the internet allows more idiots to publicly embarass themselves. BTW, the guy who ordered the hoses to be turned on was Kermit Perry, a Georgia grad. That is a fact, not a goofy opinion.
