Georgia-Auburn: No longer a ‘friendly’ rivalry?

John Jenkins and the Georgia defense need to keep Auburn's running game in check. (University of Georgia)

Vince Dooley, an Auburn grad who made UGA his home, likes to refer to the Georgia-Auburn rivalry as “feuding cousins,” but there’s always been a sizable contingent in the Bulldog Nation that thinks more like freshman running back Isaiah Crowell, who said this week, “I never liked Auburn. Point blank, I never liked them.”

After last year’s contentious game — what with Nick Fairley’s unpunished dirty play, Gene Chizik stirring it up on the sideline during the fracas at the end of the game and assistant coach Trooper Taylor and rent-a-quarterback Cam Newton strutting around like playground bullies — a lot of UGA fans no longer view it as a “friendly” rivalry.

Has Georgia-Auburn gotten uglier? Is it still feuding cousins or pure hate now? I put that question to fans following the Junkyard Blawg’s Facebook page and Twitter feed this week.

Darrell Huckaby said the rivalry “changed forever last year because of the dirty play of Nick Fairley and the thuggish sideline demeanor of Trooper Taylor. No longer a friendly rivalry between conference cousins.”

Dawn Garland dates the change further back than last year. “I can’t forget when Reggie Brown was knocked unconscious in a deliberate helmet to helmet collision in Auburn in 2004. There was no penalty flag thrown and that set the tone for the 2 teams for the last several years.”

Cory Organ rates it “pure hate” now and Jesse Murrah agrees, while Chip Kash says, “Most of us are just tired of Auburn being treated by the NCAA as if they are teflon coated.”

Kevin McCann worries that, “after the dirty plays last year, this one could get ugly.”

Let’s hope not. The only really “chippy” game so far for Georgia was Vandy, and the Dogs didn’t handle that well. Better to take the business-like approach that worked this year in Jacksonville than to get too amped up over how things went last year.

The Georgia fans who have the closest view of the rivalry are those who live over the border and must put up with the Barners and Bammers on a daily basis. One of them is my longtime friend John Sosebee, who lives in Anniston with his wife Lisa, who is of the War Eagle persuasion. Or Turkey Buzzard, as John puts it. I asked him what folks over there were saying about this week’s game.

Auburn fans, John reported, “are still busy cackling about the LSU win and Bama’s drop to #4 and how their faithfuls have been momentarily silenced for the first time this season.” But, he said, some Tiger fans have admitted to him that “Auburn’s fickle defense and lack of a leader at QB is gonna make them a much different opponent than they were last year with Cambo leading them on the field, blowing kisses at everybody.”

As for John, he’s “getting psyched up for this Saturday’s feast of Turkey Buzzard stew.”

When asked this week what I expect out of this game, I’ve said I think the double-digit spread favoring the Dogs is kind of ridiculous for a conference game between two ranked teams, but if Georgia doesn’t cough it up or commit a bunch of special teams gaffes, I think they should be able to handle Auburn.

Under Gus Malzahn, the highest-paid assistant in college athletics, the uptempo Auburn offense is always dangerous, and it will be important for the Dogs’ defense to contain power back Michael Dyer up the middle and speedster Onterio McCalebb on the outside in the running game, while keeping tight coverage on wide receiver Emory Blake and big tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen (who killed us last year). Sophomore Clint Moseley only has a couple of games under his belt as the starter at quarterback, so it behooves Jarvis Jones and company to get in his face constantly from the start.

A good day for Aaron Murray probably means a win for Georgia. (Associated Press)

A good day for Aaron Murray probably means a win for Georgia. (Associated Press)

Offensively, the Dogs should be able to move the ball on an Auburn defense that ranks near the bottom of the conference in most categories. Getting Crowell and Malcolm Mitchell back is big, but I think how Georgia fares will come down to how Aaron Murray plays. If it’s a tight game, he should be the difference.

What’s your view of this year’s installment in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry?

BULLDOG BITES

Coach Dooley will be meeting fans, posing for pictures and autographing copies of his books from 3 to 4:30 Friday at the Red Zone, 155 E. Clayton St. in Athens. … Jake Scott, one of the most exciting Bulldogs players ever, will be honored on the field during Saturday’s game for his upcoming induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. Scott becomes the 12th Georgia player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. … Athens’ Hotel Indigo is holding a 1980s era “Bulldog Legends” event from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. before the game and for two hours right after the game Saturday in connection with the “1980 Dawgs” DVD set. Scott Woerner, who was at the Red Zone last week, will be on hand and organizers say some other 1980 players also might show up. There’s no admission charge and a cash bar will be open in the lobby area of the hotel. In addition, an exhibit of Georgia football photos by Wingate Downs is being held in the Indigo’s art gallery and runs through late December. … McFarlane Toys has announced its fourth series of college football action figures is due out in late June, and UGA’s Champ Bailey is in the lineup, along with Ricky Williams of Texas, Sam Bradford of Oklahoma, Tim Tebow of Florida, Cam Newton of Auburn, Marcus Allen of USC and Peyton Manning of Tennessee. McFarlane released a cool Hines Ward figure a couple of years ago.

The facts are this. THuga was penalized for more personal fouls against AU in last year’s game than AU was penalized. It was Richt’s THUGS who ran en masse onto the field and tried to start a melee’ between the two teams at the end, when the game was already decided and they knew they were beat. This momma’s boy homer writing for the ajc here is without a doubt one of the most idiotic cry babies I’ve ever read in a major publication.

Get ready mutt fans…you’re about to experience even WORSE pain and suffering today when Auburn knocks you off your pretend pedestal. Not one single win this season over a ranked team with a winning record. The defending national champions will show you thugs what being a true powerhouse program is all about today.

Auburn was always that end of the year rivalry. It’s close to LaGrange and where I use to live in Franklin. I remember sugar falling from the sky many times because that was the game to clinch the SEC! Go dawgs and show everyone that Richt is the real deal!

Good luck against Auburn. Funny thing is I’m actually going to the game and 95% of the AH, dog nation faithful, sidewalk fan, posters here are NOT. Hahaha. Look forward to hearing you AH’s get loud and proud before 3:30pm. Novemeber 26th will be a war *I guarantee it)! Glad we won’t be playing that game on paper or on these blogs. Look forward to handing it back to you for 365 straight days!

Turning the firehoses on UGA fans digging up our field was very justified. Turning them on the DullDawg fans in the stands was just a bonus.

The rivalry really turned ugly when Richt brought his hoodlum culture with him from FSU. Last year, UGA players were shouting insults from the field before the game even started.

Privately, Auburn players say that Georgia is the dirtiest team they play, year in and year out.

Thank Richt for all the hard feelings.

Friendly rivalry? Read the comments and judge for yourself. As for the game: “Tough day for Auburn,” says Kirk Herbstreit on GameDay. Here’s how it goes down- Dawgs stuff the run, lay back their ears and go after Moseley. Trotter and Frazier better be warming up on the sidelines. Vegas cleans up on people taking Auburn with the points.

Someone said UGA is considered a “power”? since when? How many NC has UGA won the last 30 years? How man SEC titles the last 30 years? How many times has UGA gone UNDEFEATED the last 30 years? This joker was apparently laying down on his crack pipe. Anyway, yes, we’re in a rebuilding year this year, mutts — full of freshmen and sophmores. Thats ok. And our 3 losses came against really really good teams (ya’ll played ANYONE the caliber of LSU, Clemson, or even Arkansas?) So, with your weak schedule, in your weak SEC East, with your hypocritical attitudes, we shall see what happens today! Caution, mutts, HOPE you don’t win the East, bc you will have you mutt buns handed to you by either LSA or Bama! And I will be hollering either “Geaux Tigers!” or (and I NEVER thought I’d say this) “Ross Tide” Bama has a much classier team the the UGA thugs, IMO.

You didn’t just get beat by those “really, really, good teams” you got taken to the woodshed, bent over and given the Penn St. treatment. You are obviously scared it’s going to happen again today. Why else are you on a UGA fan blog? What will Georgia be after we do it to you? A “really, really, bad team” or will you come back and state UGA is also a “really, really, good team”?

Georgia cannot say anything about other schools players. Just look at the last few years and all those deadbeat players y’all have had with one drunk night or drug arrest after another. Auburn’s problems were of a football nature trying to win a game on the field and your offensive line could not block crap. Lest our memory is short Dawg fans Liberty Bowl and Central Fla. Just play for your team and what it has to win this year. If you dwell on the past it can come back and bite you in the a** and you will not be traveling the short distance from Athens to Atlanta in Dec.

Interesting story here – true: I remember reading about 10 or so years ago (google it, I don’t remember exactly when) about a UGA fraternity getting in trouble bc they were standing somewhere in UGAs stadium and peeing on folks coming in. This is a true story. (I am just surprised they got into trouble for it).

NCAA cleared our “rent a QB” and Nick Fairley was chop blocked several times before hitting your whiny QB. The SEC is a 12 team league and the only thing UGA leads in is Arrested players. Maybe you should have your holier than thou coach give you a sermon on cleaning out the speck of your own eye first.

You missed the point entirely. There is no fixation. Simply, you somehow justify your whipping at the hands of Clemson (the posers) and Arkansas. Neither are really, really, good teams. If that makes it more palettable for you, fine. Go with it. It doesn’t however, match up to the reality. Yes LSU is a really, really good team. Yes, they spanked your guys like red headed step children. So, you’ve played and got beaten by one good team. You can attempt to fluff your defeats if you want. Nobody outside of Auburn is buying it

Exactly WHO has UGA beat? The dawgs play 8 games in Georgia with 1 being at Tech. UGA hasn’t had a hard schedule. Do you really want to take that schedule into the Georgia DOME to face LSU? It will be an interesting game today. IF the dawgs lose it will be real bad, but if they win they should. I still don’t know what Vegas saw with the spread. I guess we will see in few hours. All the HATE in this game this year I wonder how much Crowell will get HIT and need to rest? It could be a very interesting game.

Why not stay on topic, is that so difficult? Georgia has beaten almost everyone in the SEC that everyone else has beaten. Why is the schedule such a subject strawman for you? The schedule is what it is, nobody has the ability to change that once the year is in motion, do they? You can scream scheduling from the rooftops and it changes nothing. Nobody knew 5 years ago when the schedule was written up what the status of the teams would be or are you stating that you did? Have you a crystal ball jammed up your @zz? Give scheduling a break. It makes you look dumber than you need to which, isn’t saying much.

Anybody hear anything from, what was his name, 2010 BCS champs? I drooled like a dog while I read his comments this morning because I really expected a beat-down after Fairly and Scam last year.

Have a great week, TWO THOUSAND TEN (as in in the past) BCS illegitimate champs. Today is all that really exists.

As a Gator, I have to compliment UGA on putting together a great season. While I don’t believe UGA can beat LSU, I now do believe they may have the athleticism to at least compete with LSU. Also, anyone who thinks UGA wouldn’t beat Boise or South Carolina today is just an idiot.

We all tend to look at the uniforms and see what we expect to see based upon the past. But the fact is that UGA has a good quarterback, a very good group of young receivers, and a big, talented defensive line. UGA may very well be on a path back to elite status.

Real feel good game Bill. Rarely have I felt this confident following a Bulldog football victory. I have had issues with Dawg QB Aaron Murray this season but he seemed to grow up before my eyes against Auburn. Love his manly facial brush. Was not a perfect game due to the two lost fumbles but most complete effort by a Mark Richt team since the blowout of heralded supposidly unbeatable Hawaii. No points left on field and off scoreboard at Sanford Stadium. Warmed my heart to see no missed Dawg FGs. Think Russ may even have smiled once or twice on sidelines. Time to take interim tag off the mascot title? Defense surrendered early TD then bottled up visitors completely. Will not say Dawgs can knock off LSU but I am far more optimistic than I was last week. Proud to see Richt show some fire on sidelines. Where has that been? For the first time I have no gripes about Mike Bobo plays which is historic. Boise State lost. South Carolina now also ran. Dawgs have won eight straight. Even if Dawgs win SEC they will be screwed out of BCS championship appearance due to 0-2 start. Why? Rest of country hates SEC. Yankees want SEC title run squashed at all costs. Fair? No! Such is sports. :)

The Auburn-UGA rivalry is a great one. Despite some of the whiners on this board who don’t know a fact from a dog bone. if the rivalry is less than it once was, it is because the internet allows more idiots to publicly embarass themselves. BTW, the guy who ordered the hoses to be turned on was Kermit Perry, a Georgia grad. That is a fact, not a goofy opinion.
