Mark Richt faces tough decisions for Auburn game

Should Carlton Thomas get the No. 2 tailback spot in the Auburn game? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Should Carlton Thomas get the No. 2 tailback spot in the Auburn game? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

It’s no surprise that Mark Richt has indicated Isaiah Crowell likely will step right back into his starting tailback spot coming off a one-game suspension.

The coach said that if Richard Samuel were not injured “it certainly would have been a good competition” for who would start, but “right now … I’d say the first snap we take Isaiah would be the No. 1 tailback. In practice I’m saying.”

Crowell may still have some growing up to do, both in terms of physical stamina and emotional maturity, but he leads the Dogs with 689 yards rushing and it’s obvious that when he’s healthy and fresh he gives the Georgia offense a dynamic that it otherwise lacks.

But what about the backup spot behind Crowell? With a starting back who spends as much time on the sideline as he does in the game, the No. 2 tailback at Georgia gets used quite a bit this season. Should junior Carlton Thomas, coming off his second suspension for misbehavior this season, automatically get the backup spot? Or should Georgia go with redshirt sophomore Brandon Harton, a former walk-on who ran for 98 yards against New Mexico State?

Physically, it’s a wash. They’re both tiny by SEC running back standards, with Thomas 5-7, 163 and Harton 5-6, 174. Both have some speed, but neither is going to run over anyone. Thomas definitely has the edge in experience, having played in 23 games in his time at UGA while Harton has played only against two nonconference foes. And this is the Auburn game, with Georgia playing for the SEC East title.

But Thomas has let the team down twice this season in off-field matters, so Richt and Mike Bobo might be inclined to go to Harton before Thomas when Crowell needs to be spelled. I think that probably would be the right choice.

So far, Richt is noncommittal. “We’re just going to have to play it out this week in practice real hard and see who we think is best suited to play,” he said, adding that Branden Smith and Brandon Boykin likely will see carries, too.

Richt faces another interesting personnel decision with his placekickers. For the New Mexico State game, he decided to alternate the faltering Blair Walsh with backup Brandon Bogotay. They traded off handling kickoffs and PATs and Richt said had there been any field goal attempts they would have alternated those, too. “I thought they both did great. We did that all week in practice, too. It was really a competitive situation. I think competition brings the best out of people,” he said.

But the head coach isn’t saying yet whether he’s going to continue that rotation for the Auburn game. Do you think he should? And if Georgia needs to try a field goal, particularly if the game is close, should it be the veteran Walsh, who has missed 10 of them this season, including two from inside 40 yards against the Gators, or should it be Bogotay, who missed his only career field goal attempt last year against Idaho State?

I’d say it’s a toss-up, though if the game’s on the line I’d probably go with Walsh. With my fingers crossed big-time.

I still haven’t given up on the idea that Malcome can contribute. All it takes is one game of romping through a D and fans and coaches will love him. Admittedly, he hasn’t done much to help his own cause, but I have seen him run enough to know he is very powerful when healthy. Go Dawgs!

Walsh all the way. He’s due to come around and Bogotay’s kicks are just as scary. I’d go with Carlton Thomas on experience alone. Everyone seems to forget Harton’s fumble against NM State. I don’t trust him against an SEC rival. Go Dawgs!

One more point on Malcome: he is the only one in the group (sans Samuel) that has the big SEC power build. He should be able to get yardage in a crowded box.

It’s a shame Samuel is hurt. That young man made us all proud against Florida.

Crowell is gonna have to man up and play the majority of the snaps. Thomas is improved from last year and Harton played hard but NMSU is very different than Auburn.

Using Smith and Boykin as decoys would work too.

I’d let Walsh kick PAT’s and FG’s and let Bogotay kick it through the end zone.

And, when AR beats LSU, who wins the west since they all will have one loss and have all beaten each other (LSU>AL, AL>AR, AR>LSU)…

let bogotay kick it over the end zone every time. walsh gets one chance to nail a field goal; after he misses, if he does, then bogotay. put the best folks out there, and the ones who want to win. but, no, we’ll see more of the ’sos.’ richt and bobo love their favorites, to the bitter end. sadly. auburn wins.

Keep the rotation on kicking until one wins the spot. As for running back, why not let the fullback get a few more carries? These lightweights are limited in what they can really do. Cro’well is not the answer either. He is not built to stand the punishment, few are, but definitely not him. Top priority in recruiting should be to find a punishing running back even a 3 or 4 star on the hype list.

I remember the days when the whole team was made up of guys who tried harder, fought for every yard, gritted their teeth, stood in the path of the oncoming team to protect their brothers, and played their hearts out every single down for every tick of the clock.

UGA’s special teams scare me to death. AU will try an onside kickoff just like they did last year and just like nearly every squad that we have faced in 2011 has scored or almost scored on.

Wheel routes also scare me.

That ALWAYS open seam in secondary around the transition from CBs to Safeties scares me too. I still see Brantley with bad wheels and all humming it to that guy WIDE OPEN in this area. Yikes !!

Walsh kicking FGs really SCARES ME. He is toast for his final season. Toast.

A Murray really tries to find Orson Charles and really forces it to him. THAT scares me. He needs to dump it quickly ……..get rid of it to a fullback or something short. Move those chains, Aaron !!!

Crowell running the ball with his mentality scares me. He is just marking time and that can end up a disaster for UGA.

AU’s coaches are better top to bottom than UGA’s and that scares me.

Another tough choice:
Mason or Murray or Both?

Mason, as usual, for the 3rd time he’s been given the chance, outplayed Murray head to head again. Murray played his best quarter of the year in the 2nd qrtr when he knew Mason was coming in in the 3rd, so competition is good, Richt’s right, I would keep rotating Mason in, he deserves it, and it seems to make Murray play better. Murray’s best 2 games where games where he knew Mason was playing. (Coast Caro + New Mex St).

I would rotate kickers in for field goals until somebody proves they can handle pressure.

Harton runs better than Samuel, all there is to it, has all Spring, did in the game, and as long as he connect shoulders on pass proetection, he;ll do fine.

The offense will need to score 45 points to beat Auburn, because the defense has given up 35 to 42 points against ranked teams, and 390+ yards per game.

Fellow Dawgs I think you let Bogatay have his turn, Walsh has had 9 games to get his mental problems with his mechanics straightened out. We are at a critical juncture in the season and can not afford his missing field goals, extra points or bad kick offs because he doesn’t have the right mental attitude. Coach Richt has stayed with Walsh a whole lot longer than I would have and it could cost him his job and the Dawgs a chance at a SEC Championship. Now as to running back I would have Ken Malcombe backing up Crowell, Thomas and Harton are just to small to use on a regular or consistant basis. I would use them in special situations getting them out in the flats/open spaces so they can use their quickness, elusiveness and speed in a chance for a big play.

Ken Malcome has been hurt but when he has been fairly healthy he has been as advertised a bruiser which is what we have been missing for the most part. Samuel showed flashes at times but most often went down on no contact to minimum contact until he decided that he would run tough in the Florida game before getting injured. That is just my humble opinion based on what I have seen.

Now as to shadetrees comments—- you hope we would not score a point, but as I see it with this TEAM, yes they are jelling as a team, if the Dawgs take care of business and beat Auburn, then Kentucky and GT in my humble opinion they will give LSU, Alabama or Arkansas all they can handle. This team talent wise is scary good and you can take that to the bank.

Cam Newton was investigated by the NCAA for a year and is still part of an open investigation by the NCAA. Right now, he plays in the NFL and will not be part of this weekend’s UGA/AU game.

I’m hoping that GT takes care of VT & Duke, and UGA takes care of Auburn & Kentucky so that when ya’ll come to Bobby Dodd Stadium on the 26th both teams will be 9-2. Expecting a great game before each team plays for conference championship. That is if UVa loses one more.

For a routine field goal, say a 27 yarder, I’d be inclined to go with Bogotay. For a long field goal (over 40 yards) I’d stick with Walsh. If it’s a field goal in the closing seconds to win the game, you almost need to look into their eyes and see what you’ve got.

Bogatay kicks it deep into the endzone on kickoffs. We all know how good we are on kickoff coverage. If you watch Walsh’s PATs he is still hooking the ball. Crowell needs to have a big game. I would love to see Malcome get a chance, since we lost our biggest rb in Samuel

Crowell will and should start. You put your best players on the field. You guys are not coaching football for a reason. Stick to your day jobs.

2010, you guys have struggled with everyone you have played this year. Yes, Utah State, FAU etc. You guys didn’t put Florida away until there was 35 seconds left in the 4th qtr. You were up by 4 at the half against FAU. South Carolina was up with less than 2 minutes left in the game. You were tied with Ole Miss at the half.

I wouldnt say you guys have been blowing teams out and do not think you will slaughter anyone.

dud: a win over UGA would rank as the THIRD most important win of our season. After Clemson and VT.
a UGA win over Tech would become your signature win, replacing Vandy.
_________________________________________________

True, we haven’t beaten anyone really great. I think tech has a better shot of beating us that Auburn. However, our signature loses are to Boise (hate to admit they’re good, but LSU would kill them) and South Carolina when they had Garcia (not that important) and Lattimore (very important). tech’s losses are to. . . . . .virginia and Miami. . .

I’ll take UGA’s season so far over tech’s.

No need for the trash talking. UGA will get to play Auburn, if they win they will get to play LSU. Simple as that.

UGA’s offense will be better than Alabama’s effort against LSU. If for no other reason, Blair will hit 50% of his fg’s whereas Bama could not.

UGA has a more diversified offense with equally talented players. There is the Bobo factor though…..

If UGA’s special teams were average, UGA could win on the defensive strenght alone.

It might be a tad too early to crown LSU as the west champs , because they still have to play Arky. An Arky win will cause all kinds of problems for the pollsters and should UGA win out and defeat Arky in the SECG, then there will be even bigger problems with the polls.

Walsh will kick fgs and pats. Bogotay will kick off. Harton and Thomas will both play but not much. Crowell would have broke a few against NMS. Harton is quick but his cuts are not as crisp as Crowell’s. I think we definately will have to use the back to block as well from the Auburn pass rush. If Crowell is healthy he plays the majority of the game. Boykin and Smith will get a few chances as well. I hope Bobo opens the game up and utilizes the speed of Boykin and Smith. I would not be opposed to see both in the game at the same time. Play action fake will work. Auburn pass defense is suspect and I think we can beat them deep. This game is always tough and will be very physical. Turnovers will be huge and the kicking game will be a factor. We better bring our “A” game or we will be in trouble. I am sure Auburn will have a game plan for us with a week off. We definately need to win because I don’t know if the Gators can beat SC or not.

Harton runs as well or a tad better than CT but CT holds onto the ball even in heavy traffic. I’d give harton the edge over CT but if fumbles let him sit for a few series before he spells IC or CT.

I think Walsh has lost his mojo and the pressure of this game to win will rattle him even more. Allow Bogotay to handle kicking FG’s and alternate KO’s between the two to see who’s doing the better job. If Bogotay misses FG’s see how Walsh handles the next opportunity. Best way to eliminate the FG dilemma is just score TD’s!

There are two critical points to winning this game. The play calling of Bobo and the play of AM. If they’re both on top of their game and the D does their job the dawgs can win this game and payback for last years cheap shots and a groin kick for Gene Chizzic.

I like Crowell as starter (no-brainer), but I think the coaches will get good competition from Thomas and Harton all week and that will be the deciding factor. As CMR said about the kicking game, competition makes everyone better. As for FGs, alternate PATs and FGs all you want, but in a clutch situation, stick with Walsh, the kid is a winner and he’ll break out of this slump.

BTW: does Rhett McGowan remind anyone else of Kris Durham? I think that kid is going to be a great receiver for us! Murray has sooooo many targets now, and with speedster Mitchell back, look out!!! The Auburn D will have no chance.

We do have a small problem spotting TB talent imo, for whatever the reason. As much as I think of IC, I think Malcome is the most likely of all of our TBs to be an NFL star (simply because of his size and strength), so we’ll see who is right Dawg Cop. Unfortunately, you will disappear when Malcome gets in and is “discovered” by UGA. You’re beloved Clemson is ranked #108 in the country against the run (out of 120 schools). Georgia is ranked #5, so good luck with that.

GT Joe, Chan said he had to be on the team because of the court but did that mean he had to play in the game instead of being on the sideline? As for your triple option offense. Yes you have gained yards but look at the record. You have one win in three games. I believe that is .333 winning percentage. As for stadiums it is laughable you can even compare Grant Field to Sanford. Maybe if Tech had fans they could have a bigger stadium. You can not even sell out what you have now. Four hotdogs, four cokes and four tickets ring a bell? You are in a one of the highest crime areas in the state. And last of all 9 out of ten. I think that is a .111 winning percentage.

Is your life so boring and your hate for UGA that you have to come to a UGA blog to rant and rave? See you on the flats in a few weeks.

Fools, regarding the stadiums, bigger does not mean better (I’m sure your wives tell you that all the time). It’s WAY better watching a game at BDS than Sanford, seats are way closer to the field. It’s like UGA just added a 2nd level to compete with the rest of the SEC, even if the view is LOUSY.

I love the history from mutt fans, always talking about the past. Thanks for the reminder on the 1-9 thing. And that has WHAT to do with this year?

And are you really denigrating Clemson’s #5 ranking because they are in the ACC? What conference is Boise STate in? LOL. You got destroyed by a team from Idaho. The best player to come out of Idaho is Wilbur Potatohead.

I understand that Crowell would like to try and stay healthy in order to get to the NFL but he also needs to learn that putting that ahead of carrying his weight on the team he’s on right now will cost him. Would you, as an NFL coach want to draft him or someone who gives their all for their team? Even if you did take him, would you consider him an early round pick?

I agree with those who say that you start the guys with heart and bring in the selfish ones like Crowell only when you must. If Crowell grows a heart, then he gets to start. (Sorry for sounding like Johnny Cochran.)

Keep thinking that dude, but here are the facts. The vaunted LSU defense that CRUSHED your little boys has played 3 mutual opponents of UGA’s. Of those, LSU has held those teams to just 21 ypg less than UGA has and that doesn’t take into account that when LSU played UF, UF started a true freshman QB making his first start ever and IN LSU at that. It doesn’t take into account that when LSU played UT, UT didn’t start Tyler Bray who was widely considered the best QB in the SEC .. he did play against UGA though. Good question ARdawg. I stumble on the GT boards from time to time only because I do have a soft spot in my heart for them because I was born in Atlanta. I have the best, most cordial conversations on there, still using the same handle and 95% of the time, all is good. But GT Joe makes it so difficult. Making fun of a team is one thing, but calling a team “weak”, “no good”, etc. in the face of being beat by said team 9 out of 10 years is plain ignorant. Let Miami, Virginia and even GT for that matter, play in the SEC and they get no votes, no titles and no love. UF has 4 losses .. to LSU, Bama, AU, and UGA. GT couldn’t win those games either. UT has lost to Florida, Georgia, LSU, SC and Bama .. no, no wins for GT in that group. Let’s try this one, Miss State has lost to Georgia, Auburn, LSU and SC .. crap, GT would lose all of those games too. So your little coaches poll theory holds no water. A lot of stock analysis and future predictions are done based on previous performance under similar economic environment variables to ones that are predicted to be approaching. This analysis consists usually of things like how did the stock perform last time there was a CEO change or how did it perform the last time there was a down shift in oil based assets or did it surge last time a new intel chip was added. Analysis in the stock exchanges is ALWAYS based of previous performance under similar variables.

Again, thanks for another not so usable example.

It’s all a part of GT Joe’s routine. He asks a question or one gets asked of him and rather that answer the question honestly, he’ll resort to the Coaches Poll as some sort of “be all authority” to build a strawman. Tis true, the coaches certainly know more than the fish wrap columnists .. err .. writers. That being said though, coaches vote and they, admittedly, never even get to see the majority of the teams they vote for or not vote for. It’s an imperfect system but it’s all we have right now.

Richt seems to be betting the chips on Crowell. That’s a big bet because this kid, and he is that, has shown contempt for the powers that be. A 50-year friend of mine in Atlanta, well connected with the program, told me that Crowell was supposed to meet with Herschel but Crowell stood him up twice. Doesn’t say much for Crowell’s maturity or common sense.

We need a couple of hot prep prospects if we are going to do well in 2012 and beyond. Crowell’s not reliable.

Just as Joe Paterno was told we know in 2002 and did NOTHING, this is just way wrong of Mark Richt to say that IC is # 1 – way wrong. We send all the wrong messages to our youth, and protect them not.

Harton has paid no more dues that any reserve on the team, or any player for that matter.

If IC is the best option at the time, and he is in good standing, he is the guy to play.

But sure, when it fits your agenda, playing favorites, which you quote all the time, is the “right” thing to do now.

A kid facing sexual assualt charges becomes your favorite QB and should have played because he was the best player (although we all know you completely made that up retroactively to once again, fit your agenda, and in fact contradicts everything you had said about him for real at the time) but no way should a kid, the far better player, that served his punishment for taking a toke of weed, play because it’s just wrong now.

Sometimes I wonder why there is so much secrecy (of details) from the “inside” by the coaches and administrators when players get in trouble. Privacy laws or school policies???
(Recent example: 3 Georgia RB’s suspended.) Even though the media had already stated that those 3 were suspended for failing a drug test, the coaches would say nothing specific, except they have, “learned their lesson.” The assumption is they were smoking pot. Who knows what it was? However, it might make them think twice about doing it again if the specific details were released to the public, so there would be no speculation. Embarrass the hell out of them and perhaps they will think twice about ever doing it again. Or, perhaps their violations are not very serious and details might keep them from being wrongly judged. I don’t just point this at Georgia, but at all schools and all sports. Extra running after practice or pulling sleds as punishment is not the answer.

One conclusion that now could easily be drawn about Crowell is that he can’t stay in a game very long because he is a smoker, is in poor condition. even late in the season. If he is smoking weed, it certainly has to affect him even more.
There seems to be too many secrets in sports these days. Privacy laws or not – we might need to stop protecting these guys like they are little children. Believe me, they know what they are doing and some will play the “coddling” system to the fullest.

IC is coming along and we can all hope he keeps his head on straight from here on out. I would put Walsh in for the next field goal attempt even if it’s for all the marbles. Everything’s a gamble in this life so I would gamble on the experienced and proven kicker seizing the opportunity to justify the coach’s trust. As for Auburn, they beat SC when Garcia went 9-23 with two picks and beat UF w/Brantley and Demps both out. Their losses average score was about 40-13. AUBURN IS A BELOW AVERAGE TEAM.

Not really. They are a Top 20 team, if I’m not mistaken. It may be appropriate to consider them an average SEC team, since they are only the fourth best team in their division. On second thought, they are actually slightly above average, since they are also the fourth best team in the entire conference.

If you want to see what below average teams look like, see Georgia’s previous seven opponents.

The wait til next year garbage of how we will run the table crap

Thats the problem I have; its called delusional thinking with no facts to back up what your saying

This staff has not upset a great team since what 2004 maybe hasnt beaten a top 10 team since when nor have they beaten a real top 25 team in 2 yrs and people come on here talking smack with nothing to back it up

Thats my problem Altamaha

Flat Tire on I-95 in Jacksonville

Oh and the other problem I have is this…… since I know you werent at the home game I will tell you

Before the game on jumbo screen during the warmups someone decides to replay highlights of the FL win with some garbage inspiration music

My problem you ask…

What does that say about the program; we act like this was some monumental win. Something that had never been done before. Something of a great accomplishment. Wow you beat an unranked, worst FL team Ive seen since 1981 when we blew them away.

If you want to play something like that you play the 1985 game when we were facing an undefeated #1 ranked FL team who demolished the eventual national championship Miami hurrican teama and we werent that good that year

This program is stooping to the level of GT when you do that crap

We are UGA not Vandy. Thats what Vandy does; replay stuff like that

Probably so. And everybody has seem to forgotten that when Alec Ogletree was a freshman, he was arrested for stealing a scooter helmet. And he apologized for doing so. And look at him now. Crowell has admitted he made a mistake and apologized for doing so. So to all you negative nacys’ out there, ease up he’s just a kid and he will learn from and move on, just as you should.
