Fan talk: Are this year’s Dawgs on a roll like the 2007 team?

Would Mark Richt still get a thumbs up if the Dogs win out but don't take the SEC East? (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

As part of the Walk With the Dogs to School event, UGA student-athletes were due to walk groups of children Friday morning to Athens’ Barrow Elementary School, “the best old school I know,” as fellow Barrow alums will remember from the distinctive school song. Barrow is located right across the street from Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall.

The idea is to encourage kids to walk to school whenever they can, said Robert Miles, the UGA Athletic Association’s director of CHAMPS/Life Skills. “The kids love to see a Bulldog in a jersey and the parents remember when our student-athletes take time out of their schedule to visit with the kids, so it’s a win-win situation for everyone.”

You might remember Miles as a member of the 1980 national championship football team, and one of his teammates, Scott Woerner, will be signing autographs and promoting the new “1980 Dawgs” DVD in Athens before and after this weekend’s homecoming game. Woerner will be at the Red Zone at 155 E. Clayton St. 9:30-11:30 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. You can see a clip of Woerner from the video here.

Speaking of Homecoming, the annual parade is Friday evening from 6 to 7 p.m. in downtown Athens.

And now on to some Junkyard Mail. …

Michael Foster writes: Love following you on Facebook and ajc.com! [I've noticed] how similar this season has been, so far, to 2007. Two early season losses (1 being at home to South Carolina), nearly losing the game in Nashville to Vanderbilt, beating Florida in a heated game where Florida fans blamed an injured quarterback for the loss (and amount of sacks). Now, thanks to a sophomore quarterback and a freshman tailback, this team really looks way different than it did in at the start. And the defense, just like 2007, has been GREAT. Fans at the beginning of the season said we basically had to win the SEC East for Richt to save his job. But, what if we go 10-2 and still don’t make the SEC title game? What if we finish 11-2? I’d say, if we do, Richt has the Dawgs right back where we want them.

Well, I’m not ready to count victories the Dogs haven’t earned yet, but I have to agree with you, I don’t think there’d be too many complaints about a two-loss season that saw the Dogs win 11 straight. And, yes, that probably would mean Georgia would wind up with a pretty decent showing in the polls and also, like 2007, would prompt a high preseason ranking next year (though probably not No. 1 like happened in 2008).

J.S. writes: I have a great question for you to pose to the DAWG Nation: As a DAWG fan, if you could pick 1 game for a victory this week, would you choose UGA over New Mexico State or Arkansas over S.C.? My position is Arkansas. It would hurt to lose to New Mexico State, but it is not a conference game and that would allow us to win the SEC East. Otherwise, we are putting our hopes on UF. I do not think that we have a chance to lose to New Mexico, even with the running back issue. However, the question is indicative of DAWG fans’ views between a solo victory and overall success.

I can see your reasoning, though the Bulldog Nation’s howls of anguish and calls for heads to roll in Athens that would accompany a loss to the Aggies of the WAC might put such a damper on the season that winning the SEC East would be all but forgotten. Still, if I must choose, I suppose I’d rather have the conference win.

Steve writes: Some people have stated that UGA’s athletic department’s drug violation policy is the toughest in the SEC. The claim was that every other SEC school allows for a 1st offense without game suspension, and UGA does not. A claim is made that if UGA’s three running backs played for UF, Alabama, Auburn, LSU then they would not have been suspended. Is this true? Find this hard to believe.

It’s true. UGA’s disciplinary guidelines call for players to be suspended from 10 percent of the season (one game) on the first offense. The penalty increases to half the season for a second offense and dismissal from the program for the third offense. A recent survey of SEC athletic departments by Brett McMurphy of cbssports.com shows that in the SEC only Kentucky joins UGA in suspending players for the first drug offense. The other schools do not suspend players until at least the second offense, and Ole Miss waits for the third. Overall, Georgia is one of only six BCS schools with such a strict policy. So, yeah, if those running backs played for the schools you mentioned, they wouldn’t have been suspended and we likely never would have heard a word about the failed drug tests.

Aaron Murray has had trouble with the long ball this season. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Aaron Murray has had trouble with the long ball this season. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Jeremy Gamiza writes: Why can’t we throw the ball deep? Is it Mike Bobo?

Funny, the complaint I’ve heard most often is that Bobo calls too many deep routes, especially on third down, forcing Aaron Murray to stand in the pocket too long. As for Georgia’s relative lack of success with the deep ball this season, I don’t think you can pin that on Bobo. He doesn’t throw the passes. Murray has, for whatever reason, been extremely inconsistent on long passes this year.

Ralph Jackson writes: My question is simple, should this current situation with our tailbacks help us land a major running back? I mean, I’m thinking, if I were considering the Dawgs and I notice [Isaiah] Crowell having issues, plus taking himself out of games, that would encourage me to go to Georgia, because Crowell might turn out to be his own worst enemy. What do you think? And for heaven’s sake why doesn’t Richt let [Brandon] Bogotay try a few field goals?

Well, let’s hope you’re right, since Georgia is considered one of the favorites in the recruiting battle over 5-star running back Keith Marshall of Raleigh, N.C. As for placekicking, Richt appears committed, at least for now, to Blair Walsh. From what I’ve heard, Walsh, for all his misses in games, is still the most consistent kicker in practice. We’ll just have to wait and see how long Richt’s patience will last with Walsh, who himself said this week, “It’s nice to have his backing, his confidence, but I’m not oblivious. That does run out, I’m sure.” Bonus points to him, by the way, for using the word oblivious.

Also on the subject of kickers, Paula B writes: Hey Bill! LOVE reading your blawg! As much as it breaks my heart to see Blair Walsh and Drew Butler have a tough game (and a tough season overall for Walsh), I’m fascinated to wonder what could possibly be the cause of such a nightmarish turnaround for each of them. What do you think? Is this a result of a lack of coaching by CMR? What is the cause (if any) and what should be done by CMR? Obviously special teams can make or break us in any game. I’ll be at the game on Saturday with my two nieces from Virginia (16 and 19 years old) — their first big college game! GO DAWGS!!!

Hope your nieces enjoy the game. As for the kickers, it’d help, I’m sure, if Georgia could still have a coach who concentrated on them like the late Bill Hartman did back in the Vince Dooley era, but the NCAA put an end to those volunteer coaching spots. Butler has been pretty great this season, so I think we can write last Saturday off as the odd bad day. Walsh’s problems seem more akin to when a golfer suddenly has problems with his swing or a batter goes into a slump in baseball. It might be a technical problem that can be corrected. Early in the season, Walsh indicated he’d watched film and fixed a few little hitches. But he’s still missing kicks, so chances are it’s become more a mental thing. He’s proved in the past he’s a great kicker so it’s just a matter of him working through this. As I noted earlier this week, Kevin Butler thinks he’s just been kicking too much in practice and in warm-ups and needs to pull back. Let’s hope he does so before he runs out of season (or Richt decides to go with Bogotay).

Kelvin Phillips writes: Bill, do you have any idea why we line up in the spread so much? With a 280-pound fullback who can actually block and an offensive line as big as ours, and with Crowell, why do we not line up in the I and run the ball?

The plan was for the Dogs to use the shotgun spread formation more this season as part of their no-huddle offense, in an attempt to get more offensive plays (which has been successful). Also, the idea behind using the spread generally is that it literally spreads the field for the wide receivers and takes some pressure off the offensive line. At times, Isaiah Crowell has actually looked more comfortable running out of the spread than the I, but generally I think the Dogs do better with play-action in their traditional pro set, particularly in the red zone.

Jeremy Floyd writes: Am I the only one wondering about (not questioning yet) Crowell’s toughness? [Richard] Samuel filled in admirably, especially with his effort and hard running. But is Crowell that banged up that he couldn’t play against Florida?

Crowell did get banged up against the Gators, but was able to return to the game. However, Samuel played more in the fourth quarter, apparently because the coaches decided his downhill running style suited what they needed at that time. But, no, you’re not the only one questioning (or at least wondering about) Crowell’s toughness. I’m not sure it’s his toughness as much as it is his conditioning, which apparently was pretty poor to start the season. He was hurt last year in high school and doesn’t seem to have worked hard enough during the offseason. He also, frankly, seems a bit immature in his attitude. Before we write him off as a part-time back, though, let’s let him get through his first season and give the UGA conditioning staff a chance to build up his endurance and also give him some time to grow up.

OkieDawg writes: Hi Bill, by looking at your photo, I assume we attended UGA about the same time. I graduated in 1975 and I am a lifelong Bulldog. I love UGA. I read that in 2010, UGA was #4 in gross revenues @ $65.2 million and #2 in net revenues @ $45.4 million. UGA is profitable due to an excellent brand image that has been built over a long period of time. Are the negative things that have occurred both on the field and off the field going to adversely impact our brand image and thus our continued ability to be one of the most profitable football programs in the nation? In both football and business, the brand is everything. It cannot ever be compromised, it must be protected by all means necessary. Is it properly protected?

Yes, we were at UGA at the same time. I graduated in 1974. As to your question, I think off the field, the brand is in great hands with Mark Richt. Most of the off-field discipline problems in recent years have been relatively minor, though irritating, and as we noted earlier, UGA has a tougher drug policy than most schools. But when it comes to profitability, I believe winning is the most important factor in protecting the brand. A sustained period of lousy seasons might diminish the gross revenues, but I don’t think Greg McGarity would let it get that far. So as far as the brand is concerned, I’m not worried.

Brent Jarnicki writes: Bill, like you, I’m a UGA alum and a die-hard Dawg that enjoys discussions not only about the X’s and O’s, but the “intangibles” of Georgia that we love. I’m writing to you about an issue that’s recently really bothered me: the major changes to the field paint design at Sanford. Hopefully you’ve noticed that since 2008, our field’s paint design has been greatly minimized. From about 2005 to 2007, we had a solid 3 foot red outlining of the entire field. I thought it looked very bold and sharp. This was taken away in 2008. But this year more changes have been made that just completely took away all of Sanford’s tradition and originality. For example, the yardline numbers no longer have the red shadowing, which were around when Herschel played (I’ve watched all the highlight videos and the numbers were shadowed even back then). The endzone lettering is now totally bland, with only a thin red line around the letters (it used to have 3-D lettering, and then a thin red and black outline, which I thought looked best). Finally, this year the field no longer has the Georgia oval G’s at the goaline. These G’s were so unique to Sanford, and really was a nice touch. Now, other than the midfield logo, there is nothing that distinguishes our field, and that really bothers me. Gameday in Sanford has so much tradition and uniqueness that sets it apart from other venues, and I considered the red shadowed numbers and especially the goal line Georgia G some of these cool nuances. Please let me know your thoughts.

I have to say I had not noticed the changes you mention, but I also agree that your description of the way it used to be done does sound more attractive. I’d be interested in hearing if anyone else noticed these changes and what they think of the way the field looks now.

Black jerseys made their debut against Auburn. Should they return? (Associated Press)

Black jerseys made their debut against Auburn. Should they return? (Associated Press)

Josh Johansson writes: Having been a UGA fan since I was born in 1991, and going to games since 1992, my favorite game has been the Blackout against Auburn. Sanford Stadium, that night, was probably the loudest and most excited I had ever seen it. The fans and more importantly the players were so pumped. I know we’ve worn the black jerseys since then (and other, not as popular, variations of black uniforms) but I really feel like it could be a great tradition for us to where those black tops against Auburn, every time we play them at home. It would be similar to the way Notre Dame wears/wore the green jerseys against USC. I think it would be awesome because it wouldn’t be every year. It wouldn’t seem like a “gimmick” against some random team. Those would be THE Black Jerseys that we wear when we play Auburn. What are your thoughts?

I loved the way the black jerseys looked. But I think maybe Richt went to the Blackout well a bit too often in 2007-2008 and after the blowout loss to Bama our superstitious fan base soured on the black jerseys. I’d love to see them brought back at some point but have wondered what would be the best way to do that. Perhaps wear them with no prior notice and without the attendant Blackout hooplah? But I think you might be on to something in your suggestion that they be designated the home jerseys against Auburn. Black jersey fans, what do you think?

Sorry but having to suspend 3 tailbacks is not exactly “being on a roll.” More like, 1 step forward (beat FL) and 2 steps back (same ol’ problems).

Bill

None of us have the same feeling about this team as we did in 2007

In hindsight, we can now see our defense was a mirage in 2007 and the UT game was an indication of things to come.

I have much more confidence on that side of the ball heading into 2012.

Offensively, we are nowhere near 2007.

Who called the plays in 2007?? :) :)

The 2007 team seemed much better on offense and special teams, but more porous on defense than this team. What’s exciting about this year’s team is the progress of the defense. If you can stop other teams and force turnovers, you have a puncher’s chance against anyone.

I do not see this year as a repeat of 2007. I do love the new D stepping up and the improved running game (sans weed problems). Give IC time, he will get stronger and in better shape. I just hope he gets his head right. Too much talent to throw it away!

By the time that ‘07 Dawg team blew through UF and AU, they were probably the best team in the country.

No sane Dawg fan could say something like that with a straight face about the current team.

It is a trait of Richt’s really good teams (’02, ‘05, ‘07) that they inexcusably lost to iniferior teams which kept them out of the Big Game.

No more black jerseys. Ever.

Also, I have noticed the changes to the field and I hate them. It was much more original and lively the way it was before.

I can see the similarities to 2007, but we need to take this one game at a time and stop counting ourselves into the SECCG before the season is even played out. No one should be thinking about Auburn yet, and looking ahead to GT is pointless right now. Worry about the next game, and the rest will hopefully take care of itself.

Black Jerseys at home against Auburn could be an awesome tradition that would not be gimmicky. I personally like the jerseys, and would like to see a permanent way to use them. I’m sure UGA’s marketing department would like to sell Black #11’s as well as Red and White. GOTTA GET THEM ALL!

Love the dawgs…..always have. Ain’t hatin’ on coaches, players, etc. However, when Crowell starts worrying more about playing than how his dreads look, and when he quits RUNNING to the sidelines after every little hit, and when he quits breakin the rules so often he gets suspended more his first season than most do in a career, and when he quits jawing and acting like he set some record after a small gane on a team with a losing record, maybe he will be okay. TRY not to do EVERYTHING a person with weak character does all at once! Make young man mistakes, but don’t do it all in a 24 hour period. These two walk-ons may not have his natural tallent, but by all accounts they ain’t feelin’ like the world owes them something! And I bet they don’t haul-ass to the sidelines after a little contact! The first time I remember them is at the UF game and all the bulldogs got hyped and so pumped… the bama game was a disappointment though. I do see some things that remind me of the 2007 team. lets remember though Dawg fans, It really took until Staffords junior year to actually be a standout QB, Moreno was a sophmore and was turning all the heads in the SEC. have some faith and lets get thru the rest of this year the best we can and let this team continue to grow. I think it’s just a scheduling fluke that the teams are similar. I’m not sure this one can stay out of trouble long enough or play special teams well enough to beat AU and GT. No this isn’t like 2007. At one point in the season I likened it to that season, but it hasn’t lived up to it at all. In ‘07 the team got progressively better and better. The offense has not progressed nearly like it should have. I mean we are really lucky we were not playing more quality opponents this season. The South Carolina game is a clear example of that. We made a lot of mistakes in that game and they were a team that was able to capitalize on it. Their offense only scored 17 points I think, (other than a one yard run by garcia after a fumble was returned to the one). 28 points were scored on turnovers and poor special teams play. Those same trends happened in a number of other games throughout the entire season, except those teams didn’t have the offense to come back. The defense has been our saving grace this entire season.

I have always wondered why they dont wear the red pants from time to time. And the black jersey’s are a nice touch. As to rather this years team has the same feel to it, the answer is no. I say this because of one major thing, the 2007 team was much looser, had more fun it seemed(from dancing to soulja boy during timeouts to rushing the field against florida) it just seemed that they had more of that confidant swagger to them(kinda like they knew they were going to beat you, and knew you knew they were going to beat you). CMR needs to do something to loosen these guys up.

Of course this team isn’t like the 2007 team. Murray is no Stafford, and Crowell is no Moreno and Mitchell is no AJ Green. And the special teams are worse, the reaosn for the 6 game run is because we ahvn’t played a team with less than 4 losses since game 2. Most of the teams are 4-4, a couple are 3-5, and maybe one is 2-6. Not been much competition. 2007 Florida team was coached by 2 time Natl Champ coach Urban Meyer, not 1st year Will Muschamp. Frankly, considering the weakness of the competition, and the low margins of victory, I’m surprised we’re ranked.

I’m all for winning. It beats the heck out of all of the losing of the last two years. But we are all fooling ouselves if we don’t at least admit that this season, we just have beaten really bad teams.

McGarity has made it clear we will not be wearing black jerseys for a long time. Silly superstitions like that havn’t worked. And the basic colors are what McGarity wants to be known for. Changes on the field colors won’t help win games either.

The rb’s play for UGA, not LSU, so the questin is pointless, as is the question sabout losing to New Mex or having Ark win, we want both.

Notre Dame keeps making money, without a lot of winning. Under WEeiss, Notre Dame team had bad years and finished in top 5 profits.

Bring Back the Silver Britches!!

November 4th, 2011

The black jerseys are a gimmick, but looked nice at night. The real problem is our dull grey/off white pants. Since 2009, they are a dull grey, not shiny silver at all. And they don’t even look grey, more like a dirty or off white. These look terrible and cheap. Nike switched us to the dull grey in the 2004 and 2005 seasons, but then we switched back to the silver from 2006-2008. Now, we are back to the dull grey. They wouldn’t even look good with the black jerseys. We need to go back to the shiny, silver britches.

Bill,
I think that this year is a result of just playing poor teams. We have not swept the SEC east since Richt has been here and this year was the year to do it. It didn”t happen. I happen to think are talent has just overcome poor coaching. You mentioned last year if Richt went 10-2 or 9-3 should he keep his job? I understand people want to give Richt a fair shot to bring this young team around. But Richt is not in his 2nd year!!! Somebody has to be held accountable for every year being in the top 10 in recruiting and wondering where the players go. This year could really be a blessing for our SEC foes. Just as some Gaytor fans has said to me “yea ya”ll won this year but we guaranteed Richt would be around a few more years!!” Now we know ya”ll will not ever get to the top of the SEC with him and Bobo. I enjoyed this article. It had a lot I had not thought of; like the field color scheme and the black jersey for Auburn games. I agree with both those authors.

As for Butler’s bad day against the belly sliders, do you think it might be because of jitters from having the block at the end of Vandy? I know that block happened during a weird formation we used without the normal 3 blockers, but still, it might have gotten in his head a little.

Hopefully, he will be back to normal going forward.

In hindsight, we can now see our defense was a mirage in 2007 and the UT game was an indication of things to come.

The offense is too lethargic and Murray cannot thow the deep ball. His accuracy is horrible. No matter what happens, the offense needs a new leader. Bobo doesn’t have a clue and he is not getting all that he can out of the offensive players. Too much talent for the offense to look this bad. They look out of sync all the time and the line is pathetic. CMR needs to revamp the O like he did the D, but he needs to let the OC do his job and stop trying to hold them back so that UGA looks like a missionary squad. This is football in the SEC and we play like we are in the WAC. The experiment with Bobo has gone on for too long and at this point if he can’t do it with the weapons that he has now, he will never do it. The O needs new leadership.

Lord, I hope this year is NOTHING like 2007. The success we had that year…and the following aspirations…just about ruined the team and the fan base, both. All the UGA fans started talking smack…sounded about like that FSU scum. And considering the talent we had, 2008 was absolutely wretched.
Was nice to see Richard Samuel have a good game against the Gators. He’s been a “damn good Dawg” since he got there. Got shifted around a lot, and worked hard wherever they put him. (Was a 5-star recruit at running back, but they moved him to LB because they thought we were well-stocked there with Caleb King and Washaun Ealey…and because he didn’t have the flat-out “burner” speed that they thought a RB needed.) Sorry to see him get hurt, if only because it takes his attitude out of the game.
Crowell has talent…but so did King and Ealey. Sure wish we had a real strict disciplinarian head coach. That would solve a lot of our problems…both on and off the field.

I’m fine with the end zones wording style being change periodically but prefer the block drop shadowed yard numbers & the oval G’s at the goal lines. I loved the first Blackout & wish Sanford had that kind of atmosphere every game. Personally I’d like use to have Black jerseys that we ware for special games or occasions. Also for ROAD games only I wouldn’t mind adding red white &\or Black pants that are Dooley era esque (with 3 stripes). Bama instead of Boise (either way, a loss).

I agree completely. Head and shoulders above any other team in the country. Neither is unbeatable as we will witness this weekend. You don’t even know what would move the line on such a game, do you? You do know who sets a spread? The lines are started by professional handicappers and the spreads are then dictated by where the money is bet. It means nothing in the grand scheme of things. Missy St had LSU 6-6 late in the third. UGA had Missy St put away at halftime. UGA and LSU playing, the Missy St games would mean absolutely nothing. You base everything you state about UGA on your hatred for UGA. No George, I was merely pointing out that Bama and LSU have destroyed Many teams of UGA’s caliber by 30+ pts, so “I can see either team beating UGA by 30+”.

If high schoolers beat 3rd graders on a math test by an average of 50 points, then you would expect average high schooler A to beat average 3rd grader B by about 50 points.

GT Joe

I guess my point is that the performance of a team can change from week to week, GT Joe. That and, if your point is right about UGA playing a weak schedule so far, we don’t know enough about UGA yet to make a determination.

I think Bama or LSU would beat them. Heck, most UGA fans probably think they’d lose to either of them. But who really cares. They want their crack at them and I don’t blame them.

We’ll get our chance at UGA in three weeks. I hope we win, but I’ll continue to be embarrassed by fans like you that come and smack talk all the time. Show a little bit of class and grow up already.

Your logic is flawed and you won’t accept it. It is fueled by your hatred. Third grade math tests aside, football teams, no matter who they are, usually match up differently. Different strengths and weakness, motivations and talent on any given day. When you can figure those out, try handicapping

The 2007 team was a better team. By year’s end, not team in the country was playing as well (an argument could be made for USC, but it’s a losing one I think). That said, this year’s team is certainly encouraging and it’s wonderful to see a UGA team led by defense again.

While Crowell certainly has had some endurance issues, he is on pace to put up top 5 freshman numbers at UGA as well has finish #1 or 2 in the country in yards by a freshman RB. When fresh, he has looked magnificent at times, showing that he can run tough, is shifty and explodes through the hole. By next year’s time, with better conditioning, there is no reason to think he will be anything short of amazing. While the “toughness” concerns are valid, UGA fans should be ashamed for being so dismissive of his input thus far.

Good question, Should UGA win the east and play in the CG, they would have to win it to even be in the same discussion as the 2007 team. 2007 had the most talent amassed (and wasted) of any other team Georgia has had in recent memory. They never jelled until after the thumping at J’ville.

I do believe if we make it to the Dome, Georgia will be very “scary” competitive but we just don’t have the horses to beat either LSU or Bama. They are just 3 deep at every position and very solid

as far as the 2007 comparisons… well, let’s just wait and see. the 2007 team didn’t really take off until they beat florida. that’s where the swagger came from. our 2011 group has a better defense but is less consistent on offense and is horrible on special teams. i do think that beating florida is a HUGE psychological relief for the kids and coaches, and that they’re going to play with more confidence now that that game is in the rear view mirror.

it’s not out of the realm of possibility that our kids could play lights out football for the next month. i’m not holding my breath, but if i ruled it out then i wouldn’t be much of a fan. GO DAWGS.

“All of our other victories have been against scrubbs. CMR is still on a very hot seat.”

I don’t know Insider, at this point 8-4 and a win over Florida is probably the worst case scenario. I don’t see NM State or Kentucky pulling off an upset. I think Richt has probably already bought himself another year absent a complete meltdown the rest of the way. But just barely. I’m pulling for the guy, but am still skeptical about his chances long-term. Georgia under Richt just seems incapable of being a complete football team.

The Auburn games worries me. On paper we ought to be able to squeeze out a win against a 5-3 Auburn team in Athens, but their extra week to prepare will help them some. And who knows what the injury situation is going to look like a week from now.

I personally think the black jerseys are awesome and would make a great tradition against Auburn! The 2007 Blackout Game was the loudest, most energetic game I’ve attended and I have it immortalized on my living room wall.

This team has not played a 100% complete game all season, but when we do, God help whoever gets in our way. I have complete faith that Grantham that will keep our D going at the level it’s playing at now, but I lack the same confidence in the offense. Bobo seems to be getting more comfortable and effective in his play calling this year, but he still gets stuck like a broken record sometimes. Aaron Murray is losing my faith because he has made some of the most boneheaded decisions this year, such as locking onto one receiver instead of checking down and scanning the field and he can be so inconsistent at times. But at the same time, he has made some phenomenal throws that only our receivers can get to (Malcom Mitchell vs Tennessee, Tavarres King vs. Florida are two examples). I think he gets too caught up in the moment which causes him to get stuck, lock on to a receiver, and hold the ball too long instead of throwing it away. It’s all mental. He clearly has the ability to make plays.

Black jerseys as a regular thing might be fine. Black jerseys as a cloak for bad coaching would be lame, at best.

Comparing this team to any good team is extremely premature, or worse.

Our defense may be okay, but isn’t well tested yet. Le’s see what happens vs Tech’s offense (at least) before we make a big fuss. Or, do you think we could stop Trent Richardson, and his line.

Our offense has a right long way to go. Yes, there are some signs of improvement, but 2007 was a good offense, and this one is not that good, just taking advantage of a decent defense.

Not so special teams? You’re kidding, right?

Our overall record may look a bit like 2007, but have we improved all that much from week to week, or have we played a string of losers. In 2007, we played better competition to be considered as a possible come-from-behind contender, and for the national championship. This year, we’ll have to be lucky to back into contention for the SEC East title.

When Vandy beats Florida, and Arkansas beats USC, we’ll look even less impressive.

If we beat everyone else, including the SEC West champs, and win the bowl game, then maybe there’s something to compare, but just how likely is that?

I’d like to see a complete game, and I’d love to see a football team competent in all the phases of the game. How far from that are we?

In 2007, we were compared to the other Johnny-come-lately *best team* in the country, USC (West). Is anybody mentioning Mr. Richt’s wares in the same breath as Alabama or LSU?

Not to take away from our wins, as we can only play our schedule, but let’s not inflate the importance of wins against relatively weak opposition. Some of our players are already thumping their chests over far too little.

Go, Georgia Bulldogs.

I think the defense is probably better now but the offense is no where near as good as 2007, I think Murray has not played as well as he did last year, He just does not have the touch he had a yr ago, Had a lot of recievers open on long patterns and missed them, Running game has been a big disapointment so far and I see no promise of improvement, Something is wrong with this program, I don’t know what it is but there are problems, Question is can the problems be corrected.

The Dawgs deserve credit for being on the roll that they are on. Winning 6 in a row is difficult at any point. But the 2007 team turned into the best team in the country after a narrow escape at Vanderbilt. This team has potential to be a very good team, but the offense hasn’t shown any flashes of greatness since the SC game and the special teams continue to be an achilles heal. Compared to 2007, this year’s ceiling is lower and though the defense has come closest, we haven’t come close to realizing our potential.

Rusty- The ‘07 Fl team actually wasn’t that great either. They were over hyped as being good bc they won the National Championship the yr. before w/ Chris Leak as the starter. Tebow was the starter in ‘07 & people acted as if they were going to roll all over everyone, but that was hardly the case at all, bc they actually ended up only going 9-4. I guess that team still appears to be much better than this yrs. FL team, but it’s hardly one of FLs. typical powerhouse teams of recent memories. I would probably have to give the ‘07 UGA team an edge over this one. I really think the potential is there, but if we’re probably going to get some players back healthy that can contribute. The other problem appears to be that AL & LSU are both really good, & in ‘07 only LSU appeared to be a elite team, but even they ended up w/ 2 losses, bc that was the yr. that everybody kept losing.

The 2007 team had some serious offensive talent. The defense got hot the second half of the season primarily because of Marcus Howard. That was not a great defense. I had a bad feeling at the time that the hot streak was covering some serious flaws in the program, Troy moved the ball up and down the field against that defense. This team has issues on special teams and a whole lot of young kids on offense — Crowell, Mitchell, Bennett, Conley and Murray is a redshirt sophomore. As these guys mature together they will be more consistent. The defense, on the other hand, is much better than 2007. It’s not even close. And defense is where it all starts. In 2007 the defense was going to be a serious limiting factor moving forward. Unfortunately CWM was in over his head. This time the defense is becoming the catalyst to improvement while the offense plays through growing pains. Hopefully the special teams issues will get figured out.

The original blackouts against Auburn were done well. The rumor here in Athens was that it was going to happen, but no one knew for sure. A good friend’s son was on that team, and he said that after going through warm ups in the red jerseys, they came back into the locker room, which was almost totally dark. The lights were then turned on and the black jerseys were hanging on their lockers. He said the team just went nuts, changed jerseys and proceeded to use that ‘jolt’ to get a good start and eventually kick the War Tiger Plainsmen all the way back to the Loveliest Tree Graveyard on the Plains. It was never done that way again, with the secrecy and all. Frankly, it was a gimmick that worked once and should never have been tried again. The last iteration, with the
Grambling ‘G’ on the helmet against Florida was an embarrassment. An insult to the Dawgs and to Grambling. Let’s just concentrate on winning, playing intelligently, managing the clock and our timeouts like we’ve done it before, and not about the color of the shirt.
Also, Bill, why do you think a 275 pound fullback would go this deeply into the season and not get a single carry? Not on short yardage or anything else? I don’t get it. I’d have to try it just to see what happened. And finally, no. This does not remind me of 2007 in any way, shape or form. We’ll end up losing one more, if not two more, games.

One thing does remind me of ‘07, we lost to an inferior South Carolina team then, too!
Let Figgins carry the ball 8-10 times, I gotta believe that would take something out of any defensive line in the country!
Line Charles up at wideout….imagine the mismatch with a corner/safety!
Tell Crowell he lost the right to wear #1 with his ‘doobie time’. Then we can have Smith and Crowell on the field at the same time. The defense might not guess ahead of time what we’re going to do! Novel, eh?

One “running back” that may be a significant factor against NMST is our quarterback. He’s shown the ability to run pretty well.

If we can get the short pass game into a decent rhythm, and combine that with an occasional, deliberate quarterback run (and slide, I hope), it could be a nice showcase for our QB.

His major recent performance problem seems to have been overthrowing the long ball, and other decreased accuracy issues on long passes.

Perhaps a relatively empty Georgia backfield will force this option.

It could also be interesting to see how someone way down the depth chart performs. Like others, I would find it enjoyable to see the suspended players watch (on their dorm televisions, I hope) successful play by team players.

Knowing how Bobo calls plays though, anything could happen.

I hope we don’t put defensive players at risk by playing them on the offense, unless, of course, they already have a lot of practice time at offense, and we don’t need them on the defensive side this game.

I find it hard to imagine we wouldn’t need our good defensive players on defense against NMSU. New Mexico State is not incapable of scoring points.

It’s way too soon to be celebrating any more victories. We shouldn’t take anyone for granted, not even NMSU.

The trolls will still ignore the facts and claim UGA is soft and the players are all thugs. A replay of the UGA-UF game happened to be on ESPN in my hotel room and I recalled that Walsh’s first FG of the game was straight and true. Also, IC ran very effectively at the end of the first half and beginning of the second. Let’s hope he gets his head straight and true, as well.

Charlie,we can’t control the schedule. We can’t help the fact that the teams we are playing have losing records. These schedules are set litreally years in advance. What do you expect??Everyone to not celebrate a win over a sub-par UF team….or a nail-biter over Vandy??As they say on TV……COME ON,MAN!!

After the loss to Auburn last year and particularly the manner in which it was won and Fairly obviously trying to take out Murray, I think we owe Auburn a big one! It’s pay back time and the black jerseys might just be an exclamation point to make. I.E., lights out for Auburn! The Dawgs need a big time win on this one regardless if Arkansas loses to South Caroline! Put this idea with the team and see how they feel. Oh, and don’t forget to put a zero “0″ on Crowell’s jersey. Make him earn his # 1 back! GO DAWGS!!

@bubba4dawgs

Georgia used the same game plan against Florida this year that Auburn used against Georgia last year. Had they not relentlessly attacked Brantley, he would have continued to light up the scoreboard in the second half as he did in the first half.

Attacking the quarterback is a legitimate method for winning a football game. That is most likely the same strategy that will be employed by Georgia today to shut down the NMSU offense. The strategy only appears offensive to you when it is being used to defeat your favorite team.

richt calls for blackout if we make it to sec title game. players warm up with black shirts. quick change before coming out of the tunnel and the dogs are in all black for the first time ever (lids, shirts, britches). hey traditionalists: it helps recruit 16-18 year old kids. might give us a little edge in a game we will surely lose if we are still playing the way we are now.

a NEW 1980 DVD? Too funny. Dawgs need to win something so the 1980 can be put to bed.

Yeah, a win is a win. Hope Dawgs go 10-2. Good chance of that, but still not impressed with CMR. BTW If UGA goes 10-2 and makes SECCG, CMR should keep his job. However, I have serious doubts he can ever compete with the elite teams in the SEC and there is really no excuse for that at UGA.

@Still@theKool-aidBAR

There are still a few of us around who remember 1980. The DVD is for the benefit of those under the age of 40 who have never seen the Georgia football program rise to it’s true potential.

Tech should think about making their own DVD. Maybe it would help with ticket sales?

I love the idea of the Black Jerseys vs Auburn at home every other year. The air in that 2007 Auburn game was electric and the players/fans were louder than ever! Question for you, Do you think that the NFL hype around certain players on the team causes and on and off the field distraction?

This 2011 team isn’t ANYTHING like the 2007 team. Murray–Mitchell–Crowell, arn’t anything like Stafford–Moreno–AJ Green. And Muschamp isn’t anything like Urban Meyer.

Just won 6 games against teams with a 2-6, 3-5, or 4-4 record.

Nothing special.

The dawgs “on a roll”?? Not hardly – when you compare WHO they have played in the last 6 games – plus this one. Come on – the COMBINED conference record of the 5 SEC teams UGA has played is a sorry 4-25. So – the dawgs on a roll?? Yea – as long as they don’t play a REAL team.

Joe Cox, your idea for all black at the SECCG is an awesome Idea. After all, you’ll be attending your own funeral. Frankly whomever goes from the East is going to get the same treatment SC got from Auburn last year. complete destruction from either Bama or LSU. It will be UGLY. UGA fans may well wish the super chickens take that one on again.

Yes Bill…this year’s UGA team is on a roll just like the 2007 team…that is, they lost to good teams, and ran up some wins against bad teams. Perfect example.

I understand but totally disagree with UGA fans that would theoretically trade a UGA loss to New Mex State for an Arkansas win. Get your priorities straight Dawgs fans.

I’ve never seen such a bunch of whiner fans. These idiots will find something to complain about even if UGA went undefeated and won the National Championship.

63-16 against the Aggies… now it’s on to Auburn. We’re going to have to play lights out!

Any time you win 7 straight games, you’re on a roll. It matters NOT who we played. The team or the coach doesn’t pick the schedule. The fact is you’ve got to line up agains the other team and beat them. For seven straight games UGA has done just that. We’ve won more games this year than we did all of last year.

Please, do us all a favor and stop the whining and complaining. A win is a win – take it and be happy.

I’m sick and tired of fellow Dawg fans who don’t have any idea how to be happy unless they have something to whine about. Sure, this year’s schedule isn’t a monster but you play who is on the schedule. Will those same fans whine like a little girl if somehow this team and coaching staff pulls out an SEC title win this season? Either you back your team or you don’t.Let’s try something different for a change…shut the hell up and get behind this team. They fight hard every week.
