Dawgs find a way to make the New Mexico State game interesting

Brandon Harton probably would have gotten quite a few carries against New Mexico State anyway. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Brandon Harton probably would have gotten quite a few carries against New Mexico State anyway. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Well, you can say this about Georgia’s suddenly thinned out tailback corps: At least it’s managed to generate some interest in Saturday’s nonconference game against the 3-5 New Mexico State Aggies (for which tickets are still available).

Mighty mite sophomore former walk-on Brandon Harton (5-6, 174), who had 11 carries against Coastal Carolina, is the likely starter, backed up by freshman walk-on Kyle Karempelis (5-9, 180), who gained 5,756 yards and scored 93 touchdowns last year for Wesleyan, a private Christian school in Norcross that plays Class A ball. The other scholarship back, former walk-on Wes Van Dyk, reportedly is injured.

So Mike Bobo admitted Tuesday that he’s likely to get creative in backing up Harton and Karempelis. Of course, defensive backs Brandon Boykin and Branden Smith have been used occasionally on offense, but in a game against a team whose passing attack ranks 16th in the nation at 297.2 yards per game, their two-way availability might be limited.

Bobo, who loves to tantalize us with hints of things we never actually see happen, also mentioned that two freshmen DBs, Nick Marshall and Damian Swann, could carry the ball some. Back in the summer the possibility of using former quarterback Marshall in the “wild Dawg” formation had been tossed out but hasn’t happened so far. Maybe we’ll actually see that now.

Bobo also mentioned fullback Zander Ogletree might get some carries at tailback, which would be ironic considering Georgia hasn’t used its fullbacks to run the ball at all so far this season.

Frankly, this blip in the starting lineup isn’t nearly the big deal that all the media attention it’s gotten would indicate. Harton was likely to get a bunch of carries in this game anyway.

Much more distressing was the news that backup Richard Samuel will miss the rest of the regular season. Against Florida, Samuel finally showed some determined running rather than going down with the first hit as has been his tendency in the past. With Carlton Thomas generally ineffective up the middle, Samuel’s size will be missed. Perhaps now when Isaiah Crowell goes to take himself out of a game someone with a headset on the sideline will tell him no, to get back in there.

As for the timing of the suspension announcement, I see no reason not to take Greg McGarity at his word that whatever prompted the action didn’t become known to UGA’s coaches until after the Florida game. Of course, rival fan bases were rife with conspiracy chatter after the announcement. A South Carolina fan told me that Gamecocks talk radio was abuzz with it Tuesday, which made me laugh. This, from a fan base that actually managed to keep a straight face through numerous conveniently timed “suspensions” for Stephen Garcia.

Meanwhile, I was heartened to see that fresh faces, including some defensive starters, were working with the No. 1 kickoff coverage team in practice Tuesday. Having the likes of Sanders Commings, Amarlo Herrera, Chase Vasser, Shawn Williams, Branden Smith and Ray Drew getting special teams playing time sounds like a good move.

There’s now way that the Karempelis kid gained 5,756 yards and scored 93 touchdowns last year as you indicated. That would be over 500 yards a game and 8 or 9 TD’s depending on many games they played. That has to be his career numbers, because if those were single season numbers he would of had offers from every team in the country despite the fact it was in A ball.

What I can not understand is a media outlet reporting that these players failed a drug test, based on “Sources close to the proccess”. I have yet to see a press release from the University of Georgia that says these players in fact failed drug tests. Also, if NCAA rules say that a player who fails a drug test must sit out a year, then how is LSU and UGA getting around this rule?

It’ll be nice to see these other running backs having a dream come true opportunity at home. I believe we’ll see all they’ve got since this is probably the only opportunity for some of them. I think we’ll see a fun running game because NMS defense will do more to defend the pass than the run. NMS will under estimate the ability of these guys to run the ball.
Here’s hoping for big holes and big gains on the ground.
Cheers!

Having seen 40 plus ncaa teams play in 25- 30 venues I can say without out a doubt uga fans as a whole are the most obnoxious, rudest, most delusional fanbase I have been around. As for relevant, this is coming from a guy whose team one a NC last year but otherwise, has nothing since 1957. So if that’s your idea of relevancy, have at it. One and done and I mean REALLY done. Probably for another 50+ years. At least Herschel Walker wasn’t bought and paid for.

george- They might have. I mean, why would Crowell choose Georgia over Alabama when Alabama is clearly a stronger program. Who knows? But if there was clear evidence that Crowell or someone in his family asked for cash for his or his kids services, you would be the first to step up and defend Crowell, right? Nope, you’d go ranting about Georgia and being cheaters and thugs and cry about how you got your feelings hurt in Athens. Gimme a break dude. You got your championship which made Auburn relevant for the first time in 50 years. Congrats and enjoy it. Time to ship these no class attending, dope smoking, prima donna’s on to Jax State, N. Alabama, or some Community College. They all knew thay were breaking the rules and chose to ignore the possible consequences. This is twice for Crowell, time for him to go, he may be a good running back but he will become a cancer to the team get rid of him now. Malcome is never going to get it together enough to play and Thomas must be running out of eligibility. Just try and recruit a couple of runners this year who don’t think that the rules shouldn’t apply to them.

Gator fans seem to think for some reason that Uga and UF only started playing each other in 1990. From 1970-89/90 the tables were turned with UF only winning 5 games. Sure the Gators have dominated the last 20 but in a similar fashion to what Uga did prior. The way I look at it the next 20 years has began and we’re tied at 1 a piece!

We ripped the SEC commissioner for the Vandy player suspension against Army while our was against Florida. So, New Mexico State evens it out. The TV folks would have loved us if we suspened them for Florida. Chances are even if the first drug test was positive, by law, they MAY have the option of a second testing of the sample which would extend the time line of the suspension.

Jasper S.

November 2nd, 2011

It’s common knowledge and an unquestioned fact that UGA head football coach Mark Richt has brought shame on the state of Georgia and made an embarrassing laughingstock of the state’s largest university. Even the most avid UGA fans understand this even when they won’t acknowledge it, bless their hearts. :-)

The most embarrassing thing is the win-at-any-price mentality of Richt, which has effectively made UGA a football f-a-c-t-o-r-y, with cheating, recruiting of low-intelligence jerks who barely graduated from high school, and tolerating immoral and unethical activities by both players and coaches. Even with all this, he still can’t win.

Richt is a product of the lawless environments of the University of Miami and Florida State University, where he learned well how to conduct himself in the most tawdry way, while pretending to the world to be a saint. Make no mistake – Richt is in coaching purely for the millions of dollars that have been wasted on him, and the millions more he will add until someone in Athens has the integrity and intestinal fortitude to run him out of town.

A truly shameful situation, especially since all Georgians, including UGA alumni and fans, have to live under this shadow of infamy.

Series tween UGA and Florida is about 90 years old.

UGA has approx. 45 or 46 wins vs 40 or 42 for Florida and then 4 or 5 ties.

Like i have said since I was in UGA in late 60s to 73 ……….UGA has always owned the Florida Gators and they …………….always will.

GT/UGA? Same thing…………….. so IF you are a GT or Gator fan, don’t talk to me about say Alabama vs UGA, cause I will rejoin with GT vs LSU or Alabama or UT. See?

You all seem to know all the facts but actually you know nothing at all. How many of you have ever played football? I would say not many and probably none on the college level. I am disappointed in what the three backs have done. It is a honor to wear the G on your helmet. When you sign with UGA you not only represent yourself but you represent 120 of your brothers, your coaches, your family, your fellow students and alumni. Everyone makes mistakes and no one is perfect but when you are put on a pedestal then you need to act accordingly. I am sure Coach Richt will take care of what needs to be done. Funny how much time some of the trolls spend on the Dawgs’ blog. On the rare occasions I visit the other guys’ blogs, it’s to congratulate them on a good win (such as Tech’s upset of Clemson) and say we’re looking forward to settling things on the field… like we did last week against the Gators. Dignify them with an answer? I think not. Let ‘em say what they want, it adds to Bill’s body count; and, I suppose it’s also a substitute for having a real life.

I didn,’t really think I liked playing starters on special teams, bc of the extra risk on injury. I really don’t know if we have much of a choice though w/ everything on the line…both for the team, & the coach. They’ve been gashed so bad repeatedly…that what else can you do? I’ve been reading about how different coaches such as U. Meyer & F. Beamer put s big emphasis on special teams, & how they play their starters there. I guess it works for them, & I don’t recall hearing about them having major problems w/ injuries either. So, if it works for them, then I guess we might as well try it, or else our special teams eventually will end up costing us a game I’m afraid.

But when the scouts came around, everyone talked him up to be an angel. You can only hide for so long. Eventually the truth will come out. Seems like the day has come. For CMR to say he runs a program with the “utmost integrity” is a joke. Last year while recuiting IC, one of the players involved, he intentianly broke an NCAA rule. A small secondary rule but still a rule. Maybe the players are just trying to get by with a little, just like the coach…

The AJC loves Coach Mark Richt. These blogs would dry up and stop producing ad revenue if Georgia hired an established HC who cleaned up the program and started winning with class and integrity. There isn’t much motivation to discuss the football program ad nauseum when everything is cruising along just as it should. Under Coach Richt, UGA has become the soap opera of the SEC.

I know why the fans of other programs come here. It’s only human nature to want to see a train wreck in progress. Reading these UGA blogs is more fun than watching Squidbillies.

Agree with you about not having to be a graduate to be a fan of UGA. As long as I pay taxes, that do benefit UGA, since they are a sate funded institution, I can support whatever team I want. Some of us were in the military and could not go to UGA. I figure since I spent my career in the military protecting this country, I can damn well be a fan of any team I want. I chose UGA and I am probably more loyal a fan, than 3/4ths of the alumni that get on here and P and M all the time. It is a state school, I live in this state so enough said.

big dawg- That game WAS called evenly. He was flagged on the late hit. Nobody excuses that. UGA was also called in the game for multiple chop blocks etc. It was a dirty game 5 personal fouls by each team. If you want to talk about sec officials doing what they are supposed to do they should have (by sec rules)suspended each and every uga player who stormed the field to fight. Uga should have had 32 players suspended for the tech game but NOBODY was. It goes both ways. Fairley was called for a bogus celebration call the following week which both cbs announcers said was the worst call they had ever seen. Calls are gonna be missed and things overlooked. It is just the way it is. Happens to UGA,Auburn, and every other school in college footabll.

ESPN.com’s Radi Nabulsi (formerly with the UGA Rivals.com site) laid out the scenario for the suspensions based on his inside sources on the radio.

Coaches/staff were aware of the issue with these players and needed to handle it (hey, give them credit for that!), but timed the testing so the positive results they KNEW would come back wouldn’t be available until after UF but before New Mexico State.

Test a couple of days earlier, and the players miss Florida.

Wait and test sometime this week, and maybe the results aren’t available until it’s too late to suspend for NMS…and they’d have to suspend for Auburn.

They accomplished everything they wanted to do. they sent the message they felt needed to be sent to these guys (again….credit for taking action!), but they didn’t risk it impacting a big game. At the same time, they fulfilled the mandate that suspensions are immediate…..even though the timing was by design.
