Dawgs find a way to make the New Mexico State game interesting

Brandon Harton probably would have gotten quite a few carries against New Mexico State anyway. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Brandon Harton probably would have gotten quite a few carries against New Mexico State anyway. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Well, you can say this about Georgia’s suddenly thinned out tailback corps: At least it’s managed to generate some interest in Saturday’s nonconference game against the 3-5 New Mexico State Aggies (for which tickets are still available).

Mighty mite sophomore former walk-on Brandon Harton (5-6, 174), who had 11 carries against Coastal Carolina, is the likely starter, backed up by freshman walk-on Kyle Karempelis (5-9, 180), who gained 5,756 yards and scored 93 touchdowns last year for Wesleyan, a private Christian school in Norcross that plays Class A ball. The other scholarship back, former walk-on Wes Van Dyk, reportedly is injured.

So Mike Bobo admitted Tuesday that he’s likely to get creative in backing up Harton and Karempelis. Of course, defensive backs Brandon Boykin and Branden Smith have been used occasionally on offense, but in a game against a team whose passing attack ranks 16th in the nation at 297.2 yards per game, their two-way availability might be limited.

Bobo, who loves to tantalize us with hints of things we never actually see happen, also mentioned that two freshmen DBs, Nick Marshall and Damian Swann, could carry the ball some. Back in the summer the possibility of using former quarterback Marshall in the “wild Dawg” formation had been tossed out but hasn’t happened so far. Maybe we’ll actually see that now.

Bobo also mentioned fullback Zander Ogletree might get some carries at tailback, which would be ironic considering Georgia hasn’t used its fullbacks to run the ball at all so far this season.

Frankly, this blip in the starting lineup isn’t nearly the big deal that all the media attention it’s gotten would indicate. Harton was likely to get a bunch of carries in this game anyway.

Much more distressing was the news that backup Richard Samuel will miss the rest of the regular season. Against Florida, Samuel finally showed some determined running rather than going down with the first hit as has been his tendency in the past. With Carlton Thomas generally ineffective up the middle, Samuel’s size will be missed. Perhaps now when Isaiah Crowell goes to take himself out of a game someone with a headset on the sideline will tell him no, to get back in there.

As for the timing of the suspension announcement, I see no reason not to take Greg McGarity at his word that whatever prompted the action didn’t become known to UGA’s coaches until after the Florida game. Of course, rival fan bases were rife with conspiracy chatter after the announcement. A South Carolina fan told me that Gamecocks talk radio was abuzz with it Tuesday, which made me laugh. This, from a fan base that actually managed to keep a straight face through numerous conveniently timed “suspensions” for Stephen Garcia.

Meanwhile, I was heartened to see that fresh faces, including some defensive starters, were working with the No. 1 kickoff coverage team in practice Tuesday. Having the likes of Sanders Commings, Amarlo Herrera, Chase Vasser, Shawn Williams, Branden Smith and Ray Drew getting special teams playing time sounds like a good move.

SSIgator, boy you need to face it – you don’t the two guys largely responsible for that glittering record vs UGA on the sidelines anymore. Spurrier’s and Myer’s accomplishments are memories now. There’s no way you can be confident in the UF’s future with with Muschamp and Weis.

And, worse still, SOS is about to win his second straight game vs UF.

Depressing, huh?

Too bad the Bowman kid is being redshirted this season. Would have loved to see him run the ball. Player relations coaches need to step it up with these kids and make them aware of the consequences for being stupid!

“Cam Newton is the perfect representative of Auburn University.”

14-0, Heisman winner etc, only qb to ever throw for over 2000 yards and rush for over a 1000 in one season.

I’ll take that any day over players UGA has in prison right now.

“Better Question: When was the last time UGA beat a team with a winning record?”

Good question, wavy gravy. You have to go waaaayyyy back in time, to October 29, 2011, when Georgia beat a 4-3 Florida team. Not much to brag about, I know, but there’s your answer.

George in all due respect it isn’t that Fairley hit Murray but that he hit him late several times and was allowed to get away with it. Objectively looking at it I don’t blama Fairley or the Auburn coaches but I do blame SEC Officials for not calling the game evenly or fairly. Anyway it is a moot point now.

big dawg- That game WAS called evenly. He was flagged on the late hit. Nobody excuses that. UGA was also called in the game for multiple chop blocks etc. It was a dirty game 5 personal fouls by each team. If you want to talk about sec officials doing what they are supposed to do they should have (by sec rules)suspended each and every uga player who stormed the field to fight. Uga should have had 32 players suspended for the tech game but NOBODY was. It goes both ways. Fairley was called for a bogus celebration call the following week which both cbs announcers said was the worst call they had ever seen. Calls are gonna be missed and things overlooked. It is just the way it is. Happens to UGA,Auburn, and every other school in college footabll.

I just answered wavy gravy’s question honestly. Don’t shoot the messenger.

But I didn’t realize that Bama, LSU and Auburn were the reasons Georgia won, especially considering that Florida had a week off before the Georgia game and Georgia was pretty beat up itself. Remind me to thank them.

Some folks need to go over to the Bleacher report and read the latest article by Dr. SEC. He makes a good point about how guys can redeem themselves after committing an offense. He cites as an example, “Alec Ogletree”. It is worth the read, but the majority of the negative people on these blogs, just want to hurl insults and be negative so I doubt many will go read the article.

Read somewhere on the Interweb recently, maybe on this site, that Crowell will be only the fourth TB in the past 20 years at UGA to gain 1000 yards, If he is able to play and keep pace.
