Dawgs find a way to make the New Mexico State game interesting

Brandon Harton probably would have gotten quite a few carries against New Mexico State anyway. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Brandon Harton probably would have gotten quite a few carries against New Mexico State anyway. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Well, you can say this about Georgia’s suddenly thinned out tailback corps: At least it’s managed to generate some interest in Saturday’s nonconference game against the 3-5 New Mexico State Aggies (for which tickets are still available).

Mighty mite sophomore former walk-on Brandon Harton (5-6, 174), who had 11 carries against Coastal Carolina, is the likely starter, backed up by freshman walk-on Kyle Karempelis (5-9, 180), who gained 5,756 yards and scored 93 touchdowns last year for Wesleyan, a private Christian school in Norcross that plays Class A ball. The other scholarship back, former walk-on Wes Van Dyk, reportedly is injured.

So Mike Bobo admitted Tuesday that he’s likely to get creative in backing up Harton and Karempelis. Of course, defensive backs Brandon Boykin and Branden Smith have been used occasionally on offense, but in a game against a team whose passing attack ranks 16th in the nation at 297.2 yards per game, their two-way availability might be limited.

Bobo, who loves to tantalize us with hints of things we never actually see happen, also mentioned that two freshmen DBs, Nick Marshall and Damian Swann, could carry the ball some. Back in the summer the possibility of using former quarterback Marshall in the “wild Dawg” formation had been tossed out but hasn’t happened so far. Maybe we’ll actually see that now.

Bobo also mentioned fullback Zander Ogletree might get some carries at tailback, which would be ironic considering Georgia hasn’t used its fullbacks to run the ball at all so far this season.

Frankly, this blip in the starting lineup isn’t nearly the big deal that all the media attention it’s gotten would indicate. Harton was likely to get a bunch of carries in this game anyway.

Much more distressing was the news that backup Richard Samuel will miss the rest of the regular season. Against Florida, Samuel finally showed some determined running rather than going down with the first hit as has been his tendency in the past. With Carlton Thomas generally ineffective up the middle, Samuel’s size will be missed. Perhaps now when Isaiah Crowell goes to take himself out of a game someone with a headset on the sideline will tell him no, to get back in there.

As for the timing of the suspension announcement, I see no reason not to take Greg McGarity at his word that whatever prompted the action didn’t become known to UGA’s coaches until after the Florida game. Of course, rival fan bases were rife with conspiracy chatter after the announcement. A South Carolina fan told me that Gamecocks talk radio was abuzz with it Tuesday, which made me laugh. This, from a fan base that actually managed to keep a straight face through numerous conveniently timed “suspensions” for Stephen Garcia.

Meanwhile, I was heartened to see that fresh faces, including some defensive starters, were working with the No. 1 kickoff coverage team in practice Tuesday. Having the likes of Sanders Commings, Amarlo Herrera, Chase Vasser, Shawn Williams, Branden Smith and Ray Drew getting special teams playing time sounds like a good move.

Time to ship these no class attending, dope smoking, prima donna’s on to Jax State, N. Alabama, or some Community College. They all knew thay were breaking the rules and chose to ignore the possible consequences. This is twice for Crowell, time for him to go, he may be a good running back but he will become a cancer to the team get rid of him now. Malcome is never going to get it together enough to play and Thomas must be running out of eligibility. Just try and recruit a couple of runners this year who don’t think that the rules shouldn’t apply to them.

This is all just a part of Coach Richt’s plan to right the ship at UGA. All of this misbehavior has been staged in order to draw the media’s attention to the football program. Lord knows that nobody would notice any of these lousy games if they were only interested in football.

All publicity is good publicity.

I hope the CMR era ends at UGA soon. I’m tired of being embarrassed. I have friends at other programs who think that UGA is basically a big joke…and I’m sick of it. I hope everyone will sit down and write a letter to Mike Adams and ask him for change or leadership regarding our football program. I for one have had enough. Now everyone thinks our UF win is tainted. Way to go CMR, you can’t even win without controversy. Please do the program a favor and go to the ACC.

@ SSI Gator——-
Gator fans seem to think for some reason that Uga and UF only started playing each other in 1990. From 1970-89/90 the tables were turned with UF only winning 5 games. Sure the Gators have dominated the last 20 but in a similar fashion to what Uga did prior. The way I look at it the next 20 years has began and we’re tied at 1 a piece!

We ripped the SEC commissioner for the Vandy player suspension against Army while our was against Florida. So, New Mexico State evens it out. The TV folks would have loved us if we suspened them for Florida. Chances are even if the first drug test was positive, by law, they MAY have the option of a second testing of the sample which would extend the time line of the suspension.

Wow, all it took was for UGA to finally beat UF again to get me off of your “official do not reply list” and like I said do it two years in a row and then people may be impressed instead of every four years or so. As Richt says, “Whoo Hoo!! Look at me guys. I am 3-11 against one of our biggest rivals!!! I want a five year contract extension, a $1,000,000 annual raise aand be able to keep my pal BooBoo with me forever. Ain’t I something else Dr. Adams?”

Good grief. Give it a rest dude. I know how much fun it is to fire up the people who take this too seriously, but your’e just saying the same thing over and over. And you get the record wrong every time anyway. Just cut and paste and be done with it.

And by the way… our coach has a better winning percentage against Fla than yours does against UGA. you can make numbers say whatever you want if you look at them selectively.

Now go ahead… type the same thing again.

It’s common knowledge and an unquestioned fact that UGA head football coach Mark Richt has brought shame on the state of Georgia and made an embarrassing laughingstock of the state’s largest university. Even the most avid UGA fans understand this even when they won’t acknowledge it, bless their hearts. :-)

The most embarrassing thing is the win-at-any-price mentality of Richt, which has effectively made UGA a football f-a-c-t-o-r-y, with cheating, recruiting of low-intelligence jerks who barely graduated from high school, and tolerating immoral and unethical activities by both players and coaches. Even with all this, he still can’t win.

Richt is a product of the lawless environments of the University of Miami and Florida State University, where he learned well how to conduct himself in the most tawdry way, while pretending to the world to be a saint. Make no mistake – Richt is in coaching purely for the millions of dollars that have been wasted on him, and the millions more he will add until someone in Athens has the integrity and intestinal fortitude to run him out of town.

A truly shameful situation, especially since all Georgians, including UGA alumni and fans, have to live under this shadow of infamy.

If Nick Marshall is not going to be a redshirt it is time to use him in the Wild Dawg. Looks like we need something new can’t depend on Crowell. If Marshall had been given the chance to prove himself like Crowell has the offense would have a new twist.

The record and UGA's DREAM TEAM

November 2nd, 2011
9:27 pm

Series tween UGA and Florida is about 90 years old.

UGA has approx. 45 or 46 wins vs 40 or 42 for Florida and then 4 or 5 ties.

Like i have said since I was in UGA in late 60s to 73 ……….UGA has always owned the Florida Gators and they …………….always will.

GT/UGA? Same thing…………….. so IF you are a GT or Gator fan, don’t talk to me about say Alabama vs UGA, cause I will rejoin with GT vs LSU or Alabama or UT. See?

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

VaTech will end the GT dream. UGA’s DREAM TEAM is 1-0 vs the Gators.

How do you like me now?

November 2nd, 2011

It amazes me all of the hate on here. If you hate UGA that bad and have to post on here time after time then something is seriously wrong with your life. You all seem to know all the facts but actually you know nothing at all. How many of you have ever played football? I would say not many and probably none on the college level. I am disappointed in what the three backs have done. It is a honor to wear the G on your helmet. When you sign with UGA you not only represent yourself but you represent 120 of your brothers, your coaches, your family, your fellow students and alumni. Everyone makes mistakes and no one is perfect but when you are put on a pedestal then you need to act accordingly. I am sure Coach Richt will take care of what needs to be done. Contrary to many of you who know nothing he is honorable man. George as for you. you are throwing stones from a glass house.

Funny how much time some of the trolls spend on the Dawgs’ blog. On the rare occasions I visit the other guys’ blogs, it’s to congratulate them on a good win (such as Tech’s upset of Clemson) and say we’re looking forward to settling things on the field… like we did last week against the Gators. Dignify them with an answer? I think not. Let ‘em say what they want, it adds to Bill’s body count; and, I suppose it’s also a substitute for having a real life.

I didn,’t really think I liked playing starters on special teams, bc of the extra risk on injury. I really don’t know if we have much of a choice though w/ everything on the line…both for the team, & the coach. They’ve been gashed so bad repeatedly…that what else can you do? I’ve been reading about how different coaches such as U. Meyer & F. Beamer put s big emphasis on special teams, & how they play their starters there. I guess it works for them, & I don’t recall hearing about them having major problems w/ injuries either. So, if it works for them, then I guess we might as well try it, or else our special teams eventually will end up costing us a game I’m afraid.

Hell, Auburn would not have any students if it were not for Atlanta. Drop this fan having to graduate from a college to be a fan nonsense.
