Dawgs find a way to make the New Mexico State game interesting

Brandon Harton probably would have gotten quite a few carries against New Mexico State anyway. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Brandon Harton probably would have gotten quite a few carries against New Mexico State anyway. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Well, you can say this about Georgia’s suddenly thinned out tailback corps: At least it’s managed to generate some interest in Saturday’s nonconference game against the 3-5 New Mexico State Aggies (for which tickets are still available).

Mighty mite sophomore former walk-on Brandon Harton (5-6, 174), who had 11 carries against Coastal Carolina, is the likely starter, backed up by freshman walk-on Kyle Karempelis (5-9, 180), who gained 5,756 yards and scored 93 touchdowns last year for Wesleyan, a private Christian school in Norcross that plays Class A ball. The other scholarship back, former walk-on Wes Van Dyk, reportedly is injured.

So Mike Bobo admitted Tuesday that he’s likely to get creative in backing up Harton and Karempelis. Of course, defensive backs Brandon Boykin and Branden Smith have been used occasionally on offense, but in a game against a team whose passing attack ranks 16th in the nation at 297.2 yards per game, their two-way availability might be limited.

Bobo, who loves to tantalize us with hints of things we never actually see happen, also mentioned that two freshmen DBs, Nick Marshall and Damian Swann, could carry the ball some. Back in the summer the possibility of using former quarterback Marshall in the “wild Dawg” formation had been tossed out but hasn’t happened so far. Maybe we’ll actually see that now.

Bobo also mentioned fullback Zander Ogletree might get some carries at tailback, which would be ironic considering Georgia hasn’t used its fullbacks to run the ball at all so far this season.

Frankly, this blip in the starting lineup isn’t nearly the big deal that all the media attention it’s gotten would indicate. Harton was likely to get a bunch of carries in this game anyway.

Much more distressing was the news that backup Richard Samuel will miss the rest of the regular season. Against Florida, Samuel finally showed some determined running rather than going down with the first hit as has been his tendency in the past. With Carlton Thomas generally ineffective up the middle, Samuel’s size will be missed. Perhaps now when Isaiah Crowell goes to take himself out of a game someone with a headset on the sideline will tell him no, to get back in there.

As for the timing of the suspension announcement, I see no reason not to take Greg McGarity at his word that whatever prompted the action didn’t become known to UGA’s coaches until after the Florida game. Of course, rival fan bases were rife with conspiracy chatter after the announcement. A South Carolina fan told me that Gamecocks talk radio was abuzz with it Tuesday, which made me laugh. This, from a fan base that actually managed to keep a straight face through numerous conveniently timed “suspensions” for Stephen Garcia.

Meanwhile, I was heartened to see that fresh faces, including some defensive starters, were working with the No. 1 kickoff coverage team in practice Tuesday. Having the likes of Sanders Commings, Amarlo Herrera, Chase Vasser, Shawn Williams, Branden Smith and Ray Drew getting special teams playing time sounds like a good move.

“Dawgs find a way to make the New Mexico State game interesting”

No Bill. The Dawgs find a way to make every game they play interesting. Do the players carry their own bongs or is someone in charge of that on the UGA staff to do it for them?

There is an enormous amount of irony in ANY gator fan cracking on ANY school about a drug problem. It’s pretty well known down here that staying drug free isn’t UF’s strong suit.

George-

Tville Dawg here. I always thought highly of Auburn before going over there in the early 80’s. Great game that day-Herschel and Bo on the field at the same time. Star of the day was Lionel “Little Train” James.

Because my car had Dawg stickers on it, I got egged before I left town. Haven’t been back since. Pretty classless-

tville dawg. sorry about your bad experience. No doubt that is uncalled for no matter who you root for. Truth of the matter is there are a few bad apples in every program. To be fair though I have had experiences much worse than that in the 20 plus years I have been going to athens. If you can not handle getting taunted etc then sec football is not for you. Having seen 40 plus ncaa teams play in 25- 30 venues I can say without out a doubt uga fans as a whole are the most obnoxious, rudest, most delusional fanbase I have been around. Maybe there is a fan base out there that is worse but I have yet to find them.

I don’t know why any rival fan bases would be up in arms about this. It wasn’t like Crowell was really a factor in the Florida game anyway. The 2 biggest drives of the game were all Samuels. I hate to see Samuels go down like this. To be jerked around on that team as much as he has and still stick with it shows how strong his character is. I hope he gets back for whatever bowl game we end up in because he deserves a much better send off than this.

Beating Florida last week was the first feel good days this staff and team have seen in say 2 years, and these 3 knuckleheads go and ruin it. I’m very disappointed and I know the Staff, their teammates , the Athletic administration and the University is. It’s like the Auburn and Cam, really don’t know if it’s true, but it’s out there and it sticks and hurts the University. Geez.

george- I have been to every SEC venue and they all have bad seeds. Been taunted everywhere, Auburn included. Hell, I even took an earful from a Vandy fan one game. Sounds like you had a bad experience in Athens and I am sorry for you fella. I have had more bad experiences in Knoxville than anywhere and thus a carry a larger grudge against them than anyone. Does it mean “they are the worst ever”? Probably not, just worst for me.

Sorry Athens (or Georgia, because I am guessing you live in Georgia and are tired of hearing about Georgia all the time) hasn’t been kind to you. My advise is to stay home this year. We wouldn’t want you to have another bad experience from the “the worst fans ever” You sound like my 7 year old daughter. But then again, your probably not much older.

Oh, and you guys might want to look into buying another QB before next week cause the ones your rolling out there are gonna get hurt.

Brandon Harton and Kyle Karempelis need to step up. For the three guys that want to smoke pot and represent the University at the same time, please decide what you want. You can’t have it both ways. I hope CMR has each of them up every morning running not just laps but miles. Suspending them for one game is not enough.

san diego dawg. If you can read which you obv cant because you still think we bought a qb, you would see where I said I have had way too many instances to count of how pathetic uga fans are. I too have been to every sec stadium multiple times and none even come close to the lack of class I see in athens every other year.

George, just because the NCAA can’t put two and two together doesn’t mean the rest of the country can’t. Great investment though. As evidence by how things are going this year, might want to reinvest again. Please dude, and I guess you think OJ was innocent too.

george- kid yourself all you want that you got Newton for free. And I ain’t pointing fingers at just you. I am sure we do it, too. Just part of the college football game. Whether it be cash payments, easy jobs, free food, lending cars. It’s all there and Auburn plays the game, too. Just because the NCAA couldn’t find the money, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. They aren’t the FBI.

Again, there is no way that you could objectively say UGA fans “are the worse”. Just another hint that you are either adolescent or someone not very mature. And judging by the way you act on this board, I suspect you go to opposing fan venues and act like an idiot. In which case, you get what you deserve.

Seriously, if it is so bad in Athens, why do you go?

HA HA HA HA HA You are right. The NCAA investigated Auburn for 14 months interviewing over 100 people combing through bank records, phone records etc. over 25 peoples bank and phone records were gone over with a fine tooth comb and was found NOTHING AT ALL with cam newton or anything else in the auburn football program. Not even a secondary violation. So let me get this straight According to all of you morons the ncaa is in on the coverup???? Why dont you idiots give it a rest and concentrate on making your program relevant for the first time in 3 decades.

Our unknown source wasn’t the other team bidding for a players services, like say Miss State was for Cam. As for relevant, this is coming from a guy whose team one a NC last year but otherwise, has nothing since 1957. So if that’s your idea of relevancy, have at it. One and done and I mean REALLY done. Probably for another 50+ years. At least Herschel Walker wasn’t bought and paid for.

george- They might have. I mean, why would Crowell choose Georgia over Alabama when Alabama is clearly a stronger program. Who knows? But if there was clear evidence that Crowell or someone in his family asked for cash for his or his kids services, you would be the first to step up and defend Crowell, right? Nope, you’d go ranting about Georgia and being cheaters and thugs and cry about how you got your feelings hurt in Athens. Gimme a break dude. You got your championship which made Auburn relevant for the first time in 50 years. Congrats and enjoy it. A Cam led Auburn Tiger team barely hung with the worst UGA team we have had in 20 years last year for over 3 quarters. Without store-bought Cam, it would have been 5 in a row for the Dawgs, but somehow, you guys think something will be any different come gametime in two weeks without Pam Newton or Big Dirty Nick down in Athens? Not a chance. We will make it 5 of the last 6.
