Gators didn’t give the game to Georgia — Dawgs took it

Aaron Murray made some clutch runs. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Aaron Murray made some clutch runs. (Jason Getz / AJC)

A few more thoughts about Saturday’s Georgia victory over Florida. …

My wife and I dropped by a Halloween party late Saturday, and one of my neighbors asked if I thought Georgia deserved to win, pointing to the points the Dawgs got as a result of Florida turnovers in their own territory — as if the Gators giftwrapped the game.

To the contrary, those Florida turnovers were anything but unforced. The first fumble by Chris Rainey, recovered by Bacarri Rambo, was caused by the returning Alec Ogletree (who bounced back nicely from a rusty start early in the game). And Frankie Hammond’s fumble, recovered by Shawn Williams, was forced by Jarvis Jones, who had a career day against the Gators.

Yes, the Dogs most certainly deserved their hard-fought win. …

(Speaking of Jones, he’s one of the nominees in ESPN’s Capitol One Cup Impact Performance of the Week vote. You can vote for him here.)

One of the more impressive aspects of Georgia’s win in Jacksonville was that it was in spite of several key players having off days. Aaron Murray missed nine consecutive passes at one point, and some of them weren’t even close. At times, he looked like he was on a completely different page of the playbook from the receiver. Blair Walsh continued his meltdown (though, frankly, I think that might have ended up working in the Dogs’ favor by prompting Mark Richt to be a bit bolder in the red zone, telling Mike Bobo to operate under the assumption that he had four downs to work with). Isaiah Crowell was sporadically effective but again ended up spending more time on the sideline than should be the case with any starting tailback. And the normally reliable Drew Butler had his worst day ever punting.

Had those folks played up to par and had Georgia’s special teams not been abysmal, the game wouldn’t have been nearly as close. …

On the other hand, give credit to Murray for making some clutch runs and throwing some nice balls, too, particularly on the two fourth-down touchdowns — though credit is also due to receivers Michael Bennett and Tavarres King for going up and taking the ball a la A.J. Green, despite being closely covered. Murray had a couple of passes dropped, too. …

I praised Bobo in Saturday night’s report for some gutsy calls, and overall I thought he called a good game. There were a few times when great play calls were undone by Murray’s inaccuracy. But there were several times in the third quarter when Bobo again fell into trying to run diminutive Carlton Thomas up the middle, a low-percentage play against just about any SEC defense. And while Richard Samuel came through big-time for the Dogs when he got the call to go up the middle, I wish Bobo would give up on trying to use Samuel on the toss sweep. It nearly always results in a loss of yardage. That’s just not Samuel’s game. …

From the silly is-he-or-isn’t-he-going-to-start pregame warmup business with John Brantley to the trading of timeouts as Florida tried in vain to draw Georgia offsides on a third-down play in the fourth quarter, Will Muschamp’s attempts at mind games were unsuccessful. Speaking of the third-down defense, Georgia’s turnaround from last year in that aspect of the game this season has been spectacular. …

And, lastly, didn’t it feel great to see Georgia finally be able to get a couple of first downs when it needed to kill the clock to preserve a win?

Great win! I am so impressed by the recruiting class we got last year. Conley stepping up last night and making a few great grabs, mitchell obviously is amazing, herrara at linebacker, Damian Swann at corner, and then of course crowell (though he needs to work a ton in the weight room this summer on his durability) are all showing flashes of being truely great. This class has the potential to be one of the greatest ever in history! GO DAWGS. To hell with Florida!

What I really liked was the near safety when 2 Dawg defenders sent the FL running back flying backwards as he barely got our of the end zone. I thought the defense just played great and kept the heat on Brantley all night. I think both our kickers were reading their AJC.com headlines all off-season about how great they were. They thought they just had to show up and it would happen. Unfortunately it hasn’t worked out that way. And what’s the deal with Butler. As a freshman he consistently booted the ball 60 yards. Now he never does. Instead his punts are getting shorter and shorter. I think we miss Scott Lakatos more than anyone ever dreamed we would.

We beat Florida! I have not seen our defense play this dominant since the BVG days(2004). Matter of fact, I would put Jarvis Jones, Olgletree , Boykin, Rambo and Washington against the 2002 defense and draw alot of similarities. Just an outstanding day on defense. Defense wins big games! We didn’t execute on special teams and offense was sporadic. Bobo called a good game, just didnt get the execution. Maybe the time off hurt the timing? We have a legitimate chance to win the EAST, but here are some concerns moving forward:

Walsh : Whatever it is he is going to have to figure it out. He doesn’t seem like a head case, but he almost cost us the game. Someone needs to get in his face and get this kid straightened out.

Murray: Sophmore slump? shows signs of brilliance but i think he is thinking too much. Remember he is just a sophmore, maybe expectations are too high( ie DAVID GREENE he is not!)

I Crowell: can you please find a jockstrap and grow a pair? If you want to make it to the NFL you are going to have to toughen up. We need you! needs 25 carries a game. 5 star on the sideline does us no good.

I can’t remember being as happy as I was last night after a GA victory…GA did what they had to do to win the game, unlike recent history. I just hope all real GA fans are happy tonight that we WON the game and not “nit-picking” every little thing like usual. With this defense playing like they are right now, I don’t see anyone beating us until (hopefully) the SEC CG.

JAxDawg, I guess you were not watching the game and missed how in the last drive that Crowell came off bench and had a key run to the outside. This was after they were loading the box on Samuel. If not for that run, UF would have gotten ball back in good field postion and time on the clock.

Funny how since UGA won, now the fans want to talk about how they took it. Stay classy UGA.

why dont we use Aron White more?

If you have to write a post defending the proposition that the Dawgs won the game, versus avoiding losing it, you’ve already defeated your own argument.

Georgia is terrible, and would not have won save for two key Florida fumbles, a key missed pass interference call against Georgia, and a Florida quarterback who couldn’t plant and throw accurately with his bad ankle in the second half.

Florida has beaten Georgia a couple times when it was probably the weaker team, so you’re certainly entitled to the victory. Just don’t try to rationalize it into something it wasn’t.

Georgia had a turnover deep in our territory too. Georgia also gave up easy points on special teams blunders and missed more field goals and gave up field position with shanked punts. All those things taken into consideration as a whole cancel eachother out. The primary reason Georgia won the game is because they totally shut down the Gators running game — plain and simple. Anyone who knows anything about football will tell you — you can’t be one dimensional on offense. They’ll also tell you defense wins games. Congrats to the Dawgs on a well deserved and hard fought win.

Do you mean Fl sucked and the DAWGS won? I think it is a little more complicated when you try to do an analysis. Was Fl’s O that bad or do the DAWGS have a very good D? Charlie Weiss is on of the smartest OC’s in the game the past 20 years (he has a few SB rings as proof). Fl. has 5 star players at almost every position on the defensive side of the ball and CMB still found some weaknesses and UGA scored enough to win.

I do not care what their record is the team that UGA played Sat. was a very good football team and UGA BEAT them.

Some so-called Bulldog fans wanted Muschump to replace CMR. Just look at what all of his yelling and screaming and cheast thumping gets him. A four game losing streak in the SEC. Florida is just as loaded with talent as any other SEC contender. They scored higher than Georgia in recruiting many times in recent years. They have a first class A – hole / defensive guru as a head coach and look at where they are. Down there with UT, Kentucky and Vandy. If being an A – hole were really a benefit to being a great coach, Nick Saban would never lose a game. PS: for all of the hire Kirby fools: Want to know how Kirby will look without Saban? AFDawg and Gravy Train, LSU and Alabama are so much better than Georgia there simply is no comparison. If you happen to make it to the SEC Championship, either one will hang 50 on you.

Florida had no chance against either LSU or Bama this year. Their teams are extraordinary this season.

Florida is clearly in a transition season for several reasons. Our offensive line has zero depth. Our running backs are fast little guys recruited to supplement a 240-pound spread option quarterback. Most of our starters are freshmen and sophomores (as many of yours are).

However, we have our next quarterback in place and our defense will be mature for the next three seasons. we have a big running back and big wide receivers coming in to run Weiss’ pro offense. Like it or not, the recent national championships and pro-experience coaching staff will make a difference in our ability to recruit what we need.

We’ll be back on top soon enough. Enjoy the win.

In the first half, one of their Offensive Tackles could have been called for false starts on just about every play. Didn’t seem to do it second half. Also, last year, Driskel (spelling. .not sure) was supposed to be the all-everything QB. . .now they’re looking for the next one. Sounds a lot like we have been in the past. Good to see.

UGA’s “D” dominated the whole game, but especially in the second half. UGA’s “O” and special teams sputtered at times, but made big-time plays against UF’s best players.

“Reality Check” is a whiner — just like his temper-tantrum-throwing head coach. Hey, “Reality Check-your-pants-for-a-pair,” man-up and grow a pair and admit your team got whupped. And Muschamp: show some class and quit acting like a child on the sidelines.

You want a real “if it weren’t for”? If it weren’t for our kicker missing 2 FGs, our QB tossing an INT, our special teams muffing coverage, and our coach showing class and running out the clock, the score would have been a hell of a lot worse — like 37 to 3. Take your “if it weren’t for” games and head back to the sandbox, whiner “Reality Check-your-pants-for-a-pair”!

Dear Reality Check,

You said that your team deserved to win so lets see:
A) Your team had -20 rushing yards (that does not constitute a winning performance)
B) UGA had 120+ more yards of total offense
C) UGA won the turnover battle
D) UGA had the ball for 37+ minutes which is HUGE (almost 2/3rds of the game)
E) UGA sacked Brantley 6 times
F) UGA missed two field goals, gave up 208 return yards, and still won the game
G) UF had 14 penalties for 106 yards revealing a complete lack of discipline
H) Florida had 1 First Down the ENTIRE second half
I) While Florida rushed for -20 yards, UGA rushed for 185 yards (with a freshman and an injured converted ILB)

Sincerely,

The Crowell thing is weird. He flunked a pee test last week. Turned out he tuned in someone else’s pee and they figured it out. They then made him re-take said test. Results aren’t immediate, so he played. I think CMR played him sparingly because of it. We’ll see how this one unfolds…

I’m saying UF’s injuries came from the likes of Bama and LSU, not Ole Miss and Tennessee. UGA’s conference opponents are 5-22 in conference play. UF’s are 19-12 in conference play. No comparison.

Obviously you know nothing about Crowell before he came to UGA. Plainly, he’s a whiny b_tch that is prone to injury with a big ego that likes to run his mouth and with poor grades. Great athlete though. The next Herschel likely to become the next Caleb.

I was so happy the Dawgs defeated Gary Danielson this weekend in Jacksonville. It seems that he has been a worthy opponent of ours every time we play on CBS sports. His disdain for Georgia Football is obvious. I hope he gets to call this years UGA / Auburn game. He rooted against us last year when he called the UGA/Auburn game. Sure feels good to see your team win in Jacksonville. Also nice to see the offense willing to put the game on the line and succeed.
I was wrong on my prediction for an L.
I will stand pat on the idea that showing improvement over the course of the season is accepting of mediocrity. I believe that idea is not fair to the athletes we recruit, and to the alumni who help see that they have the opportunity for a life sustaining education from our university.
Most 5th graders know that to be successful at almost anything. you have to try your hardest.
Are you comfortable that our coaching staff have demonstrated that they are smarter than most 5th graders?
The rest of the SEC isn’t going to wait around for this crew of coaches to be held accountable.

What an awesome win for the Dawgs over the hated gators, we should have won last year, but the Defense made the difference this year!

This freshman class along with Jarvis Jones clearly were the game changers that provided
the margin of victory!

florida won by three points last year but the battle was won this year with the recruiting success last winter.

georgia really needs to pick up recruiting this winter to move up the food chain involving the SEC elite, and that can happen with another great recruiting class.

Yes, there are parts of the Dawgs game that need a heap of improvement, and I have faith that it will eventually get straightened out. The Georgia Bulldog Defense CAUSED those two turnovers that you speak of, and even if they did not, then that would only go to show how TERRIBLE Florida’s players are. First of all, wonderful to see the Dawgs beat an inferior Gator team like we were supposed to – unlike previous years when the better UGA team let the hot dogging, chomping, taunting, jumping and jiving Florida team get into their heads. We got past it this time around; perhaps a great catch on a fourth down play late in the 2nd quarter finally broke the spell? Gators were only in it late in the 4th quarter because Dawgs didn’t play a complete game. Had the Special teams and offense been on par with the Dawg defense, Florida would have been handed their – weel, you get the picture.

I don’t know whether it was meant to be a total insult to our defense, or if Florida’s new coaching staff REALLY believed a one legged John Brantley could what Kellen Moore (Heisman candidate) did in moving the ball down field on us with the short passing game. Would have been better for Florida to have actually started a healthy backup and gone with that game gameplan rather than allow an emotional Brantley to attempt to “save the day and inspire the team.” I did let out a big sigh of relief when it became clear that Muschamp’s joke of a mind game around whether or not Brantley would actually play was just that – a joke. He really was going with the big, bad banged up Brantley. I think that crippled Florida’s offense (pardon the pun) from the beginning and cost them a shot at beating a Georgia team that did not bring it’s best game.

Urban Meyer will be missed. Good riddance.

John Brantley could do what Kellen Moore

This game made all Dawg fans proud! The rough spots were glaring but in spite of them, the Dawgs won! It was a huge pleasant surprise to see Samuel running with gusto and authority! He ran thru the Florida line like he owned it and thanks to the O-line for the fine job they did blocking for him. I hope I. C. learned something from Samuel’s running. In I. C.’s favor, he does have the instinct to cut outside when the middle is logged. This is the mark of a good running back and not many have this instinct. Another wonderful thing to see was the play of Chris Conley. Man, he went up for balls like A. J.. That was great to see!!!! I believe we have a good one coming along with him!! Put him on one side and Mitchell on the other when he returns!!

Good job Bo Bo!!!!! You made some gutsy calls and sadly some that Murray did not execute! Perhaps there was some rust from the layoff! More communication in the huddle might ensure Murray and the receivers are on the same page on where the ball will be thrown.

Coach Richt, thank you for your gutsy calls using fourth down instead of chancing Walsh’s leg. By the way, where is his leg lately? Has he met some Co-ed or something and his mind isn’t where it’s supposed to be? My goodness, he goes from the Lou Groza finalist to Mickey Mouse! Come on, the Pros are looking!!! We have beat 6 teams in a row, none of whom have a winning record today Bill King. Florida is # 120 in the nation in penalties, # 94 in the nation in Total Offense and # 104 in Turnover Margin nationally. This is Florida’s worst football team since 1987, twenty-four years. If, as you describe, others are telling you that the win was sloppy, that the win was ugly, that the win was unimpressive over a poor football team, and that Florida did again Saturday night what they have done all season giving opponents penalties after penalties, giving opponents a very poor showing on offense, giving opponents turnovers; then guess what ? Florida is not a very good football team, quite obviously. We have a very easy schedule; gave away the game to South Carolina in just the fashion we would have given away the Florida game had not Florida had yet again more issues on Turnovers, while we instead played just as miserably EVERY OTHER GAME ALL SEASON LONG; we would have lost that game too, only Florida is not a good team; in fact their worst football team in 24 years. Only a homer could call a game in which our special teams as even you note sir were sorry to the nth degree, and that given all the issues including a new head coach who has never coached anywhere ever before calling that game a great win over that sorry offense Florida has this season as even he himself admitted after the game as 1 without talent who gives up all these turnovers to every opponent that they play all season long, costing them game after game causing their own fans to go all the way back to 1987 to find a similar Florida team, then that is the worst Florida team in 24 years.

How many of the recent UF wins were gift wrapped for them? Last years Int, Edwards dropping a sure TD pass, shockley throwing int in ‘02; in 08 we missed two 1st half field goals and failed to recover an onside kick after their first score. Then they had 4 2nd half turnovers.

My point is the game of football is about executing and making plays on both sides of the ball. We have given away a lot of those so lets not act like the gators deserved them all

Reality check,

UGA plays a lot of freshmen, as well. Isaiah Crowell is a true freshmen. Conely is a true freshmen. Bennett is a freshmen. In fact, with the exception of Murray (redshirt sophomore) the offense is in a big rebuilding phase. UGA’s star receiver was out. Two experienced receivers didn’t make the trip. We even had a walk on make a reception. So what’s your point? A W is a W. Should we not count it? Then don’t count the year DJ Shockley was hurt. Don’t count the years that Ray Goff was matching wits with Steve Spurrier. LOL

Besides, if your o-line had been capable of stopping our Defense, Your QBs mobility wouldn’t have been an issue. Georgia beat UF because they outgained them on the ground 185 yds to 21? or so, thereby dominating the clock. Funny how that works. The 14 penalties and two fumbles helped us. But, none of that was affected by your gimpy QB, who honestly did a good job and is a courageous player.

Good article, but I disagree with the negative print on Murray. I think he is a key factor, if not the key factor in our win. Our receivers were covered extremely well. I can’t recall when they were less open. Watch any other QB in that situation and it spells disaster. Throw in the intense pressure, and Murray begins to really shine. He did a phenomenal job. Go back and look at his throws. He lasers the two 4th down TDs, and many other throws, and he is letting go of the ball very early in many of those cases. Methinks we have some fans who don’t understand how difficult his job was. He did miss some throws, but the whole of his work was excellent. And don’t discount his winning spirit–he doesn’t quit or crumble. He turned a number of sacks into first downs or gains. IC also did a great job. He is a true freshman and he isn’t ready to carry the whole team on his back, but he had a game winning block and several superb runs. He doesn’t blow holes in SEC defenses, but that is a function of his size and strength. Give him a crease and he does well. I suspect Samuel and Malcome are better fitted to become line busters. We will need them all. It was a great win, and don’t forget that Florida practices to beat UGA the whole year. We got their best shot, far and away. I suspect they will win out now, barring any more injuries. Uf’s D is very good. We will be rooting for them in a couple of weeks, so don’t trash them too much. Go Dawgs.

I do have to mention how many Richt-haters were claiming that Muschamp could come in here and in one year win a national championship. I think Muschamp is a good coach. I look for him to succeed. But, I am sticking by my argument that in the vast majority of cases, it will take a new HC at least two seasons to get things going.

And, to all the Bobo haters, we finally have some momentum for what it’s worth, and we will have a lot of players coming of age next season. Do you really want to install a brand new offense for them to learn at this juncture? That was disastrous for Tubberville at AU.

I have thrown my hat down in the livingroom many a time, and I have complained about them on this very blog. Bobo and Richt aren’t perfect, but they are good… a heck of lot better than I would be (that’s for certain). So, all you real Dawgs out there, get on the bus or go by an orange jersey of some type!

CHDawg,

You are absolutely right about Murray. There were some misfires in the second half, but a lot of that had to do with receivers getting jammed out of their routes. There were also some missed blocks that would have prevented him throwing with a Gator in his face. He came through big with his arm and his feet when he needed to to win.

Crowell is not 100%, cut him some slack. He had some good runs when he busted it to the outside and used his speed. Samuel came through big time.

Still don’t know why Richt won’t use Malcome, especially now that Samuel got hurt against Florida. Malcome is a power back and he could help carry the load with both Samuel and Crowell banged up. Carlton Thomas cannot do it all.

Blair Walsh is going to cost us a game and maybe the SEC East title. The Auburn game could very well come down to a FG. If we have a backup kicker, then we need to go with him. Walsh has lost it, the backup can’t be any worse.

Finally they quit running Carlton Thomas up the middle and ran Samuel up the middle. Thomas needs to run outside not Samuel…..Why did it take them so long? UGA’s offense is just weird no rhyme or reason why they do anything. As far as kicking in September and late October….there is probably some atmospherical difference in the air in early September and October which effects the distance one can kick a ball…..But it should not have any difference in the play of the special teams.

There are plays that Samuel can run outside or counter inside but they are not in Bobo or Richts heads. When he is the only on in the backfield that at least gives away the play and gives the defense an advantage especially on wide plays.

Yeah that was kind of a twisted good fortune that Blair was missing, forcing Bobo out of conservation mode. Hopefully that play calling trend will continue. Loved those clutch catches the guys were making and killing the final 5+ minutes. Hopefully Samuel is coming into his own; will make a great counter to Crowell. Defense is just awesome, keep it up. I guess I’ll have to stop defending Walsh. Not because I don’t think he deserved it, (still MADE more than most kickers have even attempted), but my contention has always been that inside of 40 yrs he has been quite good this year. It’s the long attempt that other teams are punting that has been his issue. But obviously he blew that argument away this past weekend.

Worth noting that our past great kickers struggled in Jax as well for some reason.

I don’t know if we can just bench the kid and do better though.

I am laughing uncontrollably. Probably as a whole the two worst teams this year at the 3:30 time slot. Muschamp was an idiot for not changing qb. ‘Dogs bragging about sacks and D—-’Bama or LSU woulda had 15 sacks. Enjoy your little victory. Remember your SEC wins have been against teams that have a 3-18 record in the conference, and if they “back in” to the championship game–it will be uglier than their season, if that is possible.

This game was between two of the sloppiest teams in the SEC, under-coached and it was basically minor league football. You also beat another unranked team, now go out and beat a ranked team, then come see me.

UGA has always been known for exceptional kickers, and as much as I rag on this program, Walsh is a good kicker and needs a huge curve. Unless you’re LSU or Bama these days, no SEC team should discount a win in this conference. The sheer caliber of talent alone makes any team capable of beating you. Look at what Vandy did vs. Arkansas. Of course there are games you “should” win (Ole Miss, Kentucky), but ask Muschamp about guaranteeing a win. Yes the special teams made it closer than it should have been, but I’ll take the progress on D and much improved play calling and continue to build on that. Take it one game at a time.

Walsh is filled with doubt. I hope he works it out. He changed his pre-kick routine. Need to go back to the wood shed. Slow down his pre0kick routine and do the same thing everytime. Needs to kick about 1000 this week, and take lots of opportunites agst. NM State.

I will give you the win, and you are only as good as your last report card, however, just be sure you hammer on your own program when you lose, which you will. This was win over “another unranked” team.

As I said before the season started, CMR will just enough to keep his job. I pray that you guys win the SEC east, so you can play either LSU or Alabama, so one of these programs will drill you do bad you will have no clue.

UGA is not a top-tier program, and will never be until you gut the entire program, from the coaches to the AD. Let’s say you go 10-2, so what? 8-4, so what? 11-1, so what? You win an SEC every 3 or 4 years, so what?

How many titles have you played for in the past 30 years?
How much talent have you had in the last 11 years and did not even play for a national title?

Amen brother. Walsh cannot kick deep anymore. But I blame coaching that he was kicking it right to Demps instead of trying to kick to one side of the field and cornering him up. Bogatay was brought in specifically to kickoff, and he was never able to win that job. Obviously he has not been better at PK either.

And for my money if the Au game (and I am able to drop a bunch of it that weekend to be there) is on the line, I vote we go with Walsh. When he misses it’s a surprise and still a much higher % than surely somebody else can kick on the team.

Does this hypothetical rant sound familiar?

The program is out of control. Absolutely no leadership from the head coach. He doesn’t have a clue and the team reflects his incompetence. 14 penalties for a total of 106 yards. Just no discipline from the top down thus the players act like T H U G S. The offensive coordinator is a dud. This bozo needs to be fired. He’s overpaid and over his head. Only 1 first down in the second half. Negative yards net rushing. QB only completes 35% of his passes. The defensive coordinator hasn’t a clue. Wasted a 17-3 first quarter lead. The guy needs to be fired. 4 losses in a row. Haven’t won a game since September. We get all these top recruiting classes and the coaches do nothing with the talent. Our head coach should be on the hot seat. I hope the AD cleans house after this season.

Without his inconsistent field goal attempts, Georgia probably does NOT go for it on the 2 4th downs plays (both resulting in TDs) that were probably the difference in the game’s outcome. don’t misunderstand me, I like Walsh, but this year we ALL hold our collective breath everytime the Dawgs line up for a field goal try. Now let’s get to the point that almost cost Georgia the game: KICKOFF COVERAGE. That was without a doubt the WORST display of kickoff coverage in the HISTORY of CFB!!!!! Yea he sure did, I love the Carlton Thomas up the middle plays that he continues to call for no gains PRICELESS!!!!

Or his poor scoring % when we are inside the 30

Or going away from the I-formation when that led to some of the biggest running gains the entire afternoon

You’ll defend everything wont you.

Had Walsh made his kicks it would have been 17-9; that would have put us not that far back and you know good and well Richt would have done that instead of going for it on 4th down messing it up and then been down 17-3. He had no choice in the matter

Tell us why didnt Richt go for it against UCF then

You do realize that both of the field goals against UCF put Georgia in the lead right? MUCH different situation against UF. Just an observation.

Only thing I didn’t like about the Ogameplan was we continue to waste a down by going long on first. In close games, every down counts, percentages are way to low on the long ball, I hate it. Special teams have cost us one already and almost two more. Got to address that. Anybody that thinks they need to bench Walsh is “not very smart”. He’s going to be a great one in the NFL. He has earned the job and will hopefully right the ship. Kudos to Samuel, DGD. Crowell better grow up, my opinion of him “at this point” is he’s just a pampered bad attitude. That could change, but I would be recruiting the best option for him that I could.

Bottom line, it wasn’t the prettiest win ever but any W over the gators is great. Notice the little G on gators for the rest of this year.

Defense won this game overall, they were solid. Should and I repeat “should” we get to the SECCG hopefully the defense will keep it close.

Over and out, got a ton to do today….Celebrate Dawgs….

Flat Tire, if Murray had hit those wide-open WRs, the game would have been a rout.

I’m as rough on Bobo as anybody, but it is Murray’s inconsistancy that is killing scoring oportunities.

Thomas up the middle is insane. Agreed.

That is definitely already in the works. That being said, in some small defense of him, coming off an injury he still had over 80 yards splitting carries with a 4.5 ypc.

WEll I don;t know about “defending” I tell it as I see it. You are free to dispute me.

As to your question: Because that UCF gmae was a completely different situation, and he was trying to make a point to his player. As you pointed out, it was a meaningless bowl game. This was not. Is just all 4th down situations the exact same thing in your mind.

Secondly, you need ot straighten out your point. You are mixes up what might have happend in one case to say what did happen in another, and it makes no sence.

Perhaps I should clarify. The fact that Walsh missed one did factor in, so I shouldn’t have said nothing to do with it. It affected the score and the situation. We went for it because were down by 11, and we all knew we were going to, not because we were afraid of Walsh missing again though, which I understood as your original point.

I really don’t care, but it looks to me Cro wellllll likes the ball better when he has a slew of blockers in front of him and a clear path to the goal line. Samuel on the other hand “wanted the ball.” and ran like a S.E.C.tailback should. Hope Richt “loves him a little bit too.”

Three or four players demonstrated the level Georgia could play on each week. Jarvis decided he couldn’t be blocked. Bennett and King decided those 4th down passes belonged to them. Samuel believed he was unstoppable at just the right time. Great individual plays by highly recruited players overcame the ugliness. The exception is Grantham. He’s coaching on a higher level than the rest.

Yes Murray has been inconsistant, I have said that since the SC game. But it is the coaches who need to help his mechanics and timing and they have shown that they have not addressed this because Murray is getting worse each game.

Also watch when Murray throws. He isnt looking for other recievers to see if they are open. He focuses on one reciever only, something he wasnt doing last year

Now he might not do that against New Mexico St because its an easy game but unless these coaches address it I will almost be sure you will see it come time to play Auburn.

Just like the poor tackling and conditioning issues that were finally addressed in coaches being fired

I guess fans will have to call in on the call in show to let Richt know. Funny how when that happens we see changes made

TampaDawg: Spot on!!!! NO WAY Richt goes for it on 4th down IF Walsh isn’t slumping. The evidence here is pretty plain to see: the first time they went for it on 4th down, it was in the 1st half, so it wasn’t even close to desperation time. I believe confidence in Walsh has eroded so badly, it caused Richt to do something completely out of character. I honestly hate this for Walsh. up until this year, he was deadly accurate from 40 yards in. Now, it’s a roll of the dice.

Yes I realize that those field goals put UGA in the lead against UCF

My question to you is this

You do realize that UCF was a Div II level school not that many years ago and UGA is ranked 3rd in total SEC wins, 11th in wins in the NCAA, ranked 5th in bowl appearances and bowl wins, has 5 national championships if you count them like Tech counts theirs

Now your 4th and inches inside the 8 yrd line against UCF who has no football tradition and you cannot go for it.

That my friend is why Mark Richt will never compete for a national title until that garbage changes, the elite coaches who have won big dont demoralize their teams in that situation in a meaningless bowl game

You know that to be true and anyone on here that has any sense knows this to be true

No. The TD pass to Bennett was thrown terribly. Murray showed some serious regression in that game. It was sort of odd because against USC, he played great, but made mistakes that cost the game. Against UF, he played horribly but avoided making mistakes to cost the game and made a couple of game-saving plays. Very weird season for our little QB.

On paper, there is no way that game should have been as close as it was, but if not for a non-existent Florida running game and an immobile quarterback, your special teams would have lost another game. However, The solid defensive play covered up for some gross inefficiencies on offense and special teams. Even with that, displaying the ability to comeback from 14 down, against a very bad Florida team is turning a corner in my mind. Murray was bad, Walsh was bad, Butler bad. The defense in the first half was asleep at the wheel. But, their play in the 2nd half was stellar. The Dawgs are improved. They’re young, talented and pretty doggone deep. Making a coaching change with these positives would be a mistake IMHO. We should be going into KY and AU games healthy and poised to win.

They had no choice but to line brantley up in the shotgun because he couldnt move. The UGA scout team could have sacked Brantley 6 times. Florida has 3 TD’s over the previous 3 weeks and NONE against AU which is the worst defense in the SEC. This was a sloppy game played by 2 mediocre teams that could have gone either way. On top of horrific special teams play vs. USC, you left out an Aaron Murray (AM) pick six, an AM fumble that was returned for a TD and a fumbled handoff between Murray and Crowell that was run back to the 3 yard line! Of USC’s 45 points, I’ll only hang 14-17 on our “D!”

I love the win and congratulations to everyone who worked so hard and competed. Still say special teams will (as they have all year) cost us another game and maybe more. Is it possible that CMR cannot see how poorly they perform or is he just too stubborn to admit that he was wrong in not having a full time ST coach on staff??. As for Walsh, on kickoffs if he can’t kick it thru the end zone, why not just kick it out ob bounds? They only get the 35 there and that is better than the other way.

@ Koooolaide – My point exactly. I was listening to a UGA report on some radio station this morning, and they were really patting the UGA defense on the back for this ‘great win’ over Florida. I don’t know exactly how many sacks they had, but I can tell you the Florida QB fell down every time he felt the slightest pressure. Florida must have some serious QB’ing issues for the coaches to stick with Brantley as long as they did. That guy is definitely NOT Tim Tebow.

AU wasn’t expected to win 5 games this year. They are or were expected to be nothing more than what they are. That’s the facts, they might wind up with 7-8 wins and it will prove to be a good year for them. They barely beat AU. Clempson has been slicing through that ACC schedule like poop through a goose but, who in the ACC is any good? GT? VT? Miami? There’s nothing there to call a quality win. What’s going on with our Special Teams?

I get it that there is a limit to the total number of coaches each team is allowed, making it impossible to hire a Special Teams Coach, without getting rid of another coach.

I get it that spreading around the S.T. responsibility is a common practice along the country.

I get it that our Special Teams are terrible.

What I don’t get is why?

We had the best kickers in the country. We still have the same people kicking. Now they aren’t quite so good.

Our Special Teams (overall, not just the kickers) used to be at least decent.

What happened? Why did it happen?

Who is responsible?

Hint: We know who is responsible. The Head Football Coach, the CEO, Mr. Mark Richt. But, what is the the rest of the story?

You are correct on probably every single point. There is likely no change forthcoming for OC either. IMHO, that isn’t a change we as fans have a “right” or “no right” to call for. In my opinion the question on the table is to keep Richt or let him go and gut the program. Winning the Florida game was a milestone in keeping him. We should finish 10-2, we might still go 8-4 but, I don’t think the regents will insist on a change with that (even though they did Donnan) Like it or not Richt does have some UGA capital in his pocket. A florida loss would have been his demise IMHO even if he won the rest out. Beating Florida was important to those making the decisions, he did that

It was an ugly, ugly win but nevertheless a win and beautiful in that sense. The DAWGS defense did what it had to do. Kudos to them. Granted Brantley was not anywhere near 100% but that really does not matter. It does not matter who did not play for UGA either for whatever reason. You win or lose with who you’ve got to play regardless. The pass interference penalties called on Florida were legit. There have been years when we have been heavily penalized, too. As for Richt, he’s bought himself some time. Agree/disagree, like or dislike doesn’t really matter. I’m with you on the term “rebuilding” it is used way to much and one generally only hears it when a team is losing. Georgia is rebuilt and has been for two years now. It’s time to start winning. I know stat lines don’t always translate to the ultimate W or L, but I gotta say, I kept looking at the scoreboard in comparison to the stats popping on on the TV. I mean, it was an odd game. Holding your opponent to negative rush yards, one touchdown, low percentage 3rd down conversions and FLA was in it ’till the end. You gotta think those are the pivotal lines that define a win, usually. Give credit to FLA, they made it game, all things considered. If Blair Walsh can get out of his own head, Murray finds consistent rhythm, kick-off coverage takes a crash course, and depth at running back finds a way, there’s not a team in the land we can utterly dominate. This team finds a way to win, I ‘ll give you Boise St., If I can take back USC! Overall, any true dawg fan oughta be pleased with the resilience of what is a very young team. Let’s find a way to amend these fixable issues and you just might see the dawgs spoil another BCS title for the SEC and book us a trip to New Orleans.

jaxdawg you are an idiot, Crowel ran for 89 yards on 18 carries, samuel and 59 yards on 17 carries the game plan is to split the carries between two guys, It’s not that the kid can’t carry the load you dummy the coaches have decided to split the carries and yeah not mention the kids is playing his heart out and he isnt a 100 percent healthy… so stop whinning about the kid… and enjoy the win we got..

Wasnt pretty but heck a win is a win!!!! Special teams needs to be #1 priority. Defense is gonna be fine. Murray is missing way to many wide open receivers!! Surprised it hasnt happened yet but that is gonna catch up with us sooner or later.

Murray missed 2 that were on him, and a couple that were probably related to pressure. But there were also at least 2 that were clearly on the reciever not running the route correctly too.

Dawgs didnt take the game…they tried to give it away with all the pooooooor special teams place. UF had great field position all game. Bobo still hasnt learned to run an effective offense. Too many pts left on the field. I commend the WRs for going up and catching those great balls in the endzone. Still too many draw plays with Murray in shotgun. With so much talent on the offensive side of the ball, i continue to see the same playbook each week…with limited results. Doing enough to win games (i put that more on the players making big plays, than the actual gameplan)..but not enough to be a threat against top teams. Other than UF’s first screen pass for 70 yard gain, and their special team play…..UF didnt really accomplish much the whole game!! Regardles…great game from the Dawgs…especially with all the young talent getting playing time early in their career. Will only help us create depth for the next year. Go Dawgs!!

Florida wants to run a pro type offense. When 2012 comes around, they will NOT have a proven QB,RB,FB,WR or OL. They can hype a big freshman class all the want, but this is the SEC. My point, It will be interesting if they give Muschamp enough time to put all that in place. Next year will probably be 5-6 losses also. Dawgs on the other hand will be loaded next year. Most starters will be back, a year stronger and bigger. Good luck Gators.

Mr. Krinkle

I did say something positive earlier, I said we seem to have a good D coordinator in Todd Gratham and he has showed it.

Grantham has taken a defense once controlled by your favorite Moron Willie Martinez from the bottom ranking of 50 or below to a top 5 defense

Now thats something with facts worth bragging about

But coming on here running your mouth that the ship has turned around because we beat the worst FL team Ive seen since 1981 is stupid

Here is some facts

Richt has beaten 3 lousy FL teams. Im glad we won but to come on here running your mouth give me a break. we almost lost the game

And we havent beat a ranked team in 2 yrs

Under Richt

UGA has put more players in the NFL than any other school in the SEC
UGA has ranked #2 in recruiting behind USC
Richt is 29-26 against ranked teams
8-11 against top 10 teams

With all that talent thats the result

and you come on here running your mouth about Aub who has 2 undefeated seasons during Richts tenure

Richt has never won the EAST outright in the 3 SEC championship appearances

And your saying every school in the nation except 2 would hire him in a minute WOW

Flat Tire, on CFBstats they rank UGA as the #7 team in the country for total D and UF is ranked #14. The truth is that both teams have absolutely superb defenses, and anyone saying either team stinks is likely uninformed at best. We beat a very strong Florida team; not a top ten UF team, but a very strong team. I look for them to win out with strong defense, and an improving offense. Florida is young, but they are loaded with talent. We are too. Georgia’s D appears to be improving, and as I pointed out the other day, the second half was the first time all year when we had all of our starters available. We did pretty good in the second half on D. In fact, we held the Gators to almost nothing after the first 8 minutes.

One of the more impressive turn-a-rounds for the Dawgs was “flipping” the penalties. It was good to see all those flags on FL and so few on us. Maybe the “rushing the field” curse is finally behind the Dawgs. The Dawgs are definitely playing with more discipline and that’s a credit to the current staff.

You beat a one legged QB whose OC is too arrogant to run the spread until he has the running backs. He has a freshman QB who is better running the spread than Burton because he can throw. Weis WILL cost Muschamp his job unless the Champ grows a pair and fires Weis.

Have not read many comments so this is just my comments from the game sitting on the UGA side at about the 15 yard line:

1. UGA outplayed us and deserved the win.
2. Muschamp obviously thought UGA was better as his hiding Brantley and announcing Brissett as the starter is right up there when Richt changes the UGA uniforms; very juvenile at best.
3. Murray’s receivers salvaged a bad day passing when they literally took the ball away from our DB’s on the two TD passes. Great cathes.
4. UGA fans were respectful to me after the game (probably because we are a house divided).
5. Samuels played his best in the years that I have watched him.
6. I would quickly take Bobo over Charlie Weis in a trade. Dude has no clue how to anticipate defensive adjustment and/or make adjustments himself. No wonder he lost to Navy at ND. He WILL cause Muschamp to be fired unless Muschamp takes a more active role in starter selection at QB.
7. Rainey sucks.
8. Demps is unbelievable.
9. Georgia earned it by being disiplined (few penalties) and better coached (never thought I would say that again in this series).
10. This comment is in no way meant to be disrespectful but I was amazed at the reaction of the fans at the end of the game. But then again I remember how I reacted to the occasional win prior to 1990.

Congrats Dawgs; now run the dang table and hopefully we can beat S. Carolina if Arkansas does not.

Are you going for the Thomas Brown award for Negativity Flat tire? To answer the question with a question, have the three teams mentioned been an elite team the last 3 years. Nope.

I think the point of the post with Michigan, USC, and Notre Dame is this. Being considered “elite” may draw in a big name coach, but doesn’t mean anything on a scoreboard. Again, sometimes, like Bama, you get lucky and land a Saban. But how many of them are out there? Return men did OK, I would say, and the O is captive to the QB. If Brantley gets healthy or one of the freshmen has a light bulb experience, look out. IMHO, both UGA and UF are better than they are credited. LSU and Bama are great this year, though. Top 5 Ds against very strong schedules.

Face this sobering reality: Even if South Carolina loses to 8th ranked Arkansas this week and wins against Florida, you will still be shut out of the SEC Championship Game by virtue of a tie in the SEC East with SC. Head to head competition breaks the tie and you stay home. If they do happen to lose to both of those teams, you will possibly go to the SEC CG and get pummeled by either LSU or Alabama. Dawgs have been decimated with transfers, injuries…but still continue to fight and win games!! True we have a some areas of concern..primarily Special Teams. But having an offense with only 6 offensive linemen left, a soph QB, freshmen WRs and a RB, and OC with limited creativity…i’m proud of these boys!! Defense is playing great ball regardless who its been against!! Special teams was expected to be a strength for this team….but has been the biggest liability so far.

UF defense has been good…but they’ve had numerous injuries at the QB position all year…offensive 3 and outs doesnt keep a defense fresh for 4 qtrs…any dawg fan should be able to understand that, since we can related to it!! LSU beat UF badly because of injuries at QB, Brantley went down prior to halftime with Bama. And muschamp and Co. dont know how to utilize all that talent. Instead they go on record stating Meyer left the cupboard bare with talent. Go back and look at the recruiting rankings!! with that being said..its obvious he has no idea how to keep a team together…talk about throwing your own players under the bus, and not believing in them!! His hire will damage UF for a long time!!! Muschamp was the sexy hire for the program, not a smart one!! As with many dawg fans, i have my opinions and issues with Bobo and Richt…but i reflect those towards them..and not at the program as a whole!! Regardless of your personal opinion, we should all support our team when they’re struggling!! its already hard enough for them to win with all the expectations put upon them, as well as having your own fanbase bash them when they’re struggling at times!!! either support or get off the wagon!!!

“elite” Michigan last won a NC in 1997. Before that, it was 1948.

“elite” Notre Dame last won a NC in 1988. Before that, it was 1977.

I agree with most of what you said about ND; the only times that I have ever rooted for them was when they played FSU.

USC? Let’s see, this year they’re 6-2 (like UGA). For the previous 4 years they had no NCs (that you love sooooo much) and finished:

2010: 8-5
2009: 8-4

You havent changed my mind Michigan and Notre Dame are elite level schools

Elite level schools once they get a good leader can compete over night

Take FL for example. They had lack luster coaches for 100 years and did nothing until Spurrier

Elite level programs are programs that have:

The money
The Fanbase
The recruiting

Put a good coach in place and those elite level programs come back on top

Just like your example of USC 1977 a championship then a drought until a good Coach came in and took the team to the top

Michigan
Notre Dame
Texas
Florida
Ohio State
Alabama
LSU
Oklahoma
Georgia
Tennessee
USC

All these programs have
The money
The large fanbase
The recruiting

To compete for championships at anytime

Grinch, The UF UAA has almost 10 Mill in the bank and I think the buyout would be about 6 mill without having to go to the donors. Among the donors are the Steinbrenners, Griffin family who have given over 75 million the last 10 years alone, Disney family and others. The buyout will not be a problem. I like Muschamp and hope he succeeds, but Spurrier proved that it could be done at Florida and the bar has risen since then. Muschamp just needs to control Weis who would rather do it his way even if the talent is not there for his offense yet. I do not doubt for a minute that if next year is like this it will not be a 3rd. Like I said, the Zooker would have been fired during year 2 had he not won the East. Jeremey Foley fired him on Thursday during Georgia week that year and let him finish the season.

Great win for the Dawgs (’bout time), but Fla is not a good team. Meyer left them with two track stars and a bunch of underachievers. I’m not sold on Muschamp as an SEC head coach either. His “rah rah” style is more fitting an Alabama-Birmingham (which may soon have an opening) than UF. He’s a good position coach along the lines of Bud Carson, Charlie Weiss, etc.

“Coach, I’m getting married soon and he’s a Georgia fan and …”

I agree Florida should have won. I mean who can argue with the fact that they amassed 74 yards of offense the last 3 1/2 quarters. And Georgia was so luck to convert 4th and 5 and 4th and 6–much more lucky than Florida converting 4th and 19. And Georgia going for it on 4th down was cheap despite the fact that they had missed 2 chip shots previously. And of course, there was NO WAY that Georgia could have scored if they wanted to on their last drive. I mean Florida really proved they could stop the run as Georgia ran out the last 5 1/2 minutes of the clock. Anyone writing otherwise, in response to claims by Florida fans, is just proving the point that Florida should have won. And anyone not responding the the sound points made by Florida fans is admitting the Florida fans are right. Bill King, don’t you see?–>Either way, Florida should have won.

Georgia had no business winning that game. Florida dominated! Didn’t you see the special teams? That is the only facet of the game that is legitmate. The following stats were just sheer lucky flukes that went Georgia’s way, and they shouldn’t really be part of the game:

1) They outgained Florida by 130 yards
2) They won the turnover battle
3) They were penalized 10 fewer times for 80 less yards
4) They outrushed Florida by 200 yards (the running game Is NEVER important in the SEC!)
5) 3rd down efficiency better than twice as good as Florida
6) Time of possession 15:20 more than Florida

Clearly it was sheer luck! When does a team EVER win with flukey stats like that?

DawginnTX, you forgot that Coach Bobo nearly lost the game for Georgia. I mean how can you expect to win a ballgame, when 2 of the 83 offensive play calls have your smaller RB actually running the ball off of the Left tackle. Realizing that it works nearly half the time for a 4ypc average, but come on! a RB? trying to run behind an offensive lineman? keep trying that .024% of the time and we’ll lose for sure.

Having a gameplan that includes starting your 3rd string players sends a terrible message to the team in terms of the mental focus that they need to have heading into a game. I would rather go up 28-0 in the 2nd quarter and then frame it as getting the backups some live reps.

I’ve never understood how anyone could take any pride in the UGA football team. Look at their history for the past forty years: how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the remedial studies scam, the Jim Harrick sleaze, the DUIs in the athletic office (not just Damon Evans), the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school label (for the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and sickening as it is, I don’t see many alumni and fans demanding an end to this sleazy activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school that decent people despise and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it ever end? Not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is the biggest hypocrite in the United States. And even with the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still doesn’t win the SEC.

So you’re paying him $3+ million a year to be champions, but he can’t even win the SEC East. So why do you keep paying him millions of dollars year after year?

Just wondering.
