Gators didn’t give the game to Georgia — Dawgs took it

Aaron Murray made some clutch runs. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Aaron Murray made some clutch runs. (Jason Getz / AJC)

A few more thoughts about Saturday’s Georgia victory over Florida. …

My wife and I dropped by a Halloween party late Saturday, and one of my neighbors asked if I thought Georgia deserved to win, pointing to the points the Dawgs got as a result of Florida turnovers in their own territory — as if the Gators giftwrapped the game.

To the contrary, those Florida turnovers were anything but unforced. The first fumble by Chris Rainey, recovered by Bacarri Rambo, was caused by the returning Alec Ogletree (who bounced back nicely from a rusty start early in the game). And Frankie Hammond’s fumble, recovered by Shawn Williams, was forced by Jarvis Jones, who had a career day against the Gators.

Yes, the Dogs most certainly deserved their hard-fought win. …

(Speaking of Jones, he’s one of the nominees in ESPN’s Capitol One Cup Impact Performance of the Week vote. You can vote for him here.)

One of the more impressive aspects of Georgia’s win in Jacksonville was that it was in spite of several key players having off days. Aaron Murray missed nine consecutive passes at one point, and some of them weren’t even close. At times, he looked like he was on a completely different page of the playbook from the receiver. Blair Walsh continued his meltdown (though, frankly, I think that might have ended up working in the Dogs’ favor by prompting Mark Richt to be a bit bolder in the red zone, telling Mike Bobo to operate under the assumption that he had four downs to work with). Isaiah Crowell was sporadically effective but again ended up spending more time on the sideline than should be the case with any starting tailback. And the normally reliable Drew Butler had his worst day ever punting.

Had those folks played up to par and had Georgia’s special teams not been abysmal, the game wouldn’t have been nearly as close. …

On the other hand, give credit to Murray for making some clutch runs and throwing some nice balls, too, particularly on the two fourth-down touchdowns — though credit is also due to receivers Michael Bennett and Tavarres King for going up and taking the ball a la A.J. Green, despite being closely covered. Murray had a couple of passes dropped, too. …

I praised Bobo in Saturday night’s report for some gutsy calls, and overall I thought he called a good game. There were a few times when great play calls were undone by Murray’s inaccuracy. But there were several times in the third quarter when Bobo again fell into trying to run diminutive Carlton Thomas up the middle, a low-percentage play against just about any SEC defense. And while Richard Samuel came through big-time for the Dogs when he got the call to go up the middle, I wish Bobo would give up on trying to use Samuel on the toss sweep. It nearly always results in a loss of yardage. That’s just not Samuel’s game. …

From the silly is-he-or-isn’t-he-going-to-start pregame warmup business with John Brantley to the trading of timeouts as Florida tried in vain to draw Georgia offsides on a third-down play in the fourth quarter, Will Muschamp’s attempts at mind games were unsuccessful. Speaking of the third-down defense, Georgia’s turnaround from last year in that aspect of the game this season has been spectacular. …

And, lastly, didn’t it feel great to see Georgia finally be able to get a couple of first downs when it needed to kill the clock to preserve a win?

Great win for the Dawgs (’bout time), but Fla is not a good team. Meyer left them with two track stars and a bunch of underachievers. I’m not sold on Muschamp as an SEC head coach either. His “rah rah” style is more fitting an Alabama-Birmingham (which may soon have an opening) than UF. He’s a good position coach along the lines of Bud Carson, Charlie Weiss, etc.

Why can’t we force fumbles against winning teams like Boise or South Carolina? Why only the 4-4 type of teams?

So you didn’t see the game? Two words – Special teams.

* 99 yard kickoff return.
* maybe a 25 yard punt from Butler deep in our own territory put them in field goal range.

That’s 10 of the points.

Ah. . . it’s good times when the usual trolls have to start talking about the record over the past 20 years or how Athens, GA is the “cesspool of the South”. . .

It’s bad times when the usual safe haven of acting like a fla fan doesn’t offer much help.

Best of luck.

why cant fans get it threw thier head you dont score on every pass?
why cant fans get it threw thier head you dont get a first down on every run?
why cant fans get it threw thier head you dont score every possesion?
why cant fans get it threw thier head you dont get a turnover evey tme the deffence comes out?

This from Muschamp (to fire up the base)

“Coach, I’m getting married soon and he’s a Georgia fan and …”

“That’s not my fault,” Will Muschamp said, playing to the crowd.

“My wedding is on the same day as the Florida-Georgia game,” she continued. “I was wondering: Can you guarantee Florida will win?”

Muschamp, the native of Rome, a long-time Georgia resident and former Bulldogs safety, smiled.

“I certainly can,” he said

Auburn will be the real Grinch this year when we beat the dogs and spoil their December plans for the GA dome. They are wishing for some one else (ARK, FLA) to beat SC so they can win the east. But Auburn is going to spoil their hopes by beating them on 11/12/11.

I saw two less than average teams play a game of mistakes. Florida had a handicap in that the QB was less than 90% due to injury. Neither of these teams should be ranked. The only people that think UGA and Fla are average-to-good teams are UGA, Fla and SEC fans.

I agree with you Air Force. Outside of LSU, Alabama and maybe Arkansas the SEC has less than average teams. The only ACC teams UGA and Fla could beat are probably Maryland and Boston College. The game was only big to the SEC East standings. Kim K and Kris’s divorce is the only larger farce

No, my inferance was that you DON”T go to all the home games, if any. Am I being clear now about what that means? I suppose somebody could have taken you to a SECCG, which pretty much qualifies you John Q public, and perhaps a Ga/Fla game or two.

I do remember that ‘85 game though. Good one to go to. I did too. (of cource I have been to pretty much every one since 1979) I graduated UGA a few weeks after that game. Were you able to recall when you did?

Did anyone watch Hutson Mason after a brief warm up when Murry went down. From his body action Mason will not be here next year and that will be a loss for the Dawgs.. Murry needs to show more than he has starting soon. Mason my be a better passer and needs some time in against NMS.

Dawgs will be better and better from now on. Love to have CMR as HC, but Bobo…not quite good enough for play calling of now a day game. It is safe to have another kicker to spell wildly Walsh otherwise he will lose a close one for you. Samuel run like the old Dooley’s dawg, straight @ your balls. The wedge is TOO TIGHT for the return, #2 would run into own wedge, easy for the D to locate ball carier.

“49-10 The Embarrassment, hurt continues today for all UGA fans.”

Yep, hurts so bad, I’m not sure what you’re talking about. If you’re a Gator and you’re talking about the ‘08 gamne, then let’s talk hurt and embarrassment. Does 44-0 (’82), 75-0 (’42), 51-0 (’68) ring a bell?

See, that’s the problem with you Gators. When you get into the past, tradition, and that sort of thing, you’re bringing a knife to a gunfight. Dominate for another 20 years, then maybe you can hang with us.

d-dog, Auburn defense is about the same when we made a 21-7 deficient into a 41-something riot over the dawgs last year. only difference Cam is outstanding rookie in NFL and we are slow at QB and hve played 18 true freshman. Dawgs better grab what they can this year because with Frazier next three years we hopefully be back playing in the NC game.
