Gators didn’t give the game to Georgia — Dawgs took it

Aaron Murray made some clutch runs. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Aaron Murray made some clutch runs. (Jason Getz / AJC)

A few more thoughts about Saturday’s Georgia victory over Florida. …

My wife and I dropped by a Halloween party late Saturday, and one of my neighbors asked if I thought Georgia deserved to win, pointing to the points the Dawgs got as a result of Florida turnovers in their own territory — as if the Gators giftwrapped the game.

To the contrary, those Florida turnovers were anything but unforced. The first fumble by Chris Rainey, recovered by Bacarri Rambo, was caused by the returning Alec Ogletree (who bounced back nicely from a rusty start early in the game). And Frankie Hammond’s fumble, recovered by Shawn Williams, was forced by Jarvis Jones, who had a career day against the Gators.

Yes, the Dogs most certainly deserved their hard-fought win. …

(Speaking of Jones, he’s one of the nominees in ESPN’s Capitol One Cup Impact Performance of the Week vote. You can vote for him here.)

One of the more impressive aspects of Georgia’s win in Jacksonville was that it was in spite of several key players having off days. Aaron Murray missed nine consecutive passes at one point, and some of them weren’t even close. At times, he looked like he was on a completely different page of the playbook from the receiver. Blair Walsh continued his meltdown (though, frankly, I think that might have ended up working in the Dogs’ favor by prompting Mark Richt to be a bit bolder in the red zone, telling Mike Bobo to operate under the assumption that he had four downs to work with). Isaiah Crowell was sporadically effective but again ended up spending more time on the sideline than should be the case with any starting tailback. And the normally reliable Drew Butler had his worst day ever punting.

Had those folks played up to par and had Georgia’s special teams not been abysmal, the game wouldn’t have been nearly as close. …

On the other hand, give credit to Murray for making some clutch runs and throwing some nice balls, too, particularly on the two fourth-down touchdowns — though credit is also due to receivers Michael Bennett and Tavarres King for going up and taking the ball a la A.J. Green, despite being closely covered. Murray had a couple of passes dropped, too. …

I praised Bobo in Saturday night’s report for some gutsy calls, and overall I thought he called a good game. There were a few times when great play calls were undone by Murray’s inaccuracy. But there were several times in the third quarter when Bobo again fell into trying to run diminutive Carlton Thomas up the middle, a low-percentage play against just about any SEC defense. And while Richard Samuel came through big-time for the Dogs when he got the call to go up the middle, I wish Bobo would give up on trying to use Samuel on the toss sweep. It nearly always results in a loss of yardage. That’s just not Samuel’s game. …

From the silly is-he-or-isn’t-he-going-to-start pregame warmup business with John Brantley to the trading of timeouts as Florida tried in vain to draw Georgia offsides on a third-down play in the fourth quarter, Will Muschamp’s attempts at mind games were unsuccessful. Speaking of the third-down defense, Georgia’s turnaround from last year in that aspect of the game this season has been spectacular. …

And, lastly, didn’t it feel great to see Georgia finally be able to get a couple of first downs when it needed to kill the clock to preserve a win?

I was talking smack all week to UGA fans, cuz that’s what makes this rivalry so great, but UGA did “win” this game rather than florida “losing” it. Richt & Granthem made some nice changes on the defensive side causing the Gators a lot of trouble the next 3 quarters. Great game, big win for UGA, but the gators will be back!

We have won more games and more BCS bowls and major bowls than ND has even BEEN IN since the late 80’s.

They suck

I agree with most of what you said about ND; the only times that I have ever rooted for them was when they played FSU.

The Bowl thing though; is their administration would not let them go to Bowls from 1925 thru 1969, hence their small number of bowls participated in.

All traditionally deep teams (like Mich, ND, and USC) have been to the top of the mtn, as well as the bottom of the valley. At what point do you consider them elite?? their whole body of work..or just spout off a couple of recent National Championship and past five year win record?? Dawgs do have their issues…but you have to give credit where credit is due…and thats our defense..and hardwork by our young players!! Thats the only point i’ve been making!! Its embarrassing being part of a fanbase who bashes their own program worse than a Gator fan would!!

The funniest thing that I heard while walking back to my car was I overheard some UGA fan complain that “while I am glad we won cause I hate the Gators, this means that we will have Richt for at least another 10 years”. Talking about the glass being half empty!

Scott I suspect that this one stung more because of him playing at UGA. One thing for sure; if he has another one of these next year he will be 2 and done. The only thing that gave Zook a 3rd season was he beat UGA and won the East his second year.

Glen…i agree with you. Definitely been hoodwinked the past 3-4 seasons. But the gig is up..and Richt is starting to be held accountable. Best thing that happened with UGA was Evans getting caught and fired!! Devine intervention anyone? He was just an affirmative action hire for UGA by Dooley. Had no business being in the position of AD. Richt was lucky with the schedule this year…but winning does help with recruiting. If you build it, they will come!! haha DC issue fixed with Grantham…now its time to fix the OC issues. now throw in Special Teams. McGarity comes from a recently successful program..and has already lite a match under Richt’s arse!! At that point, ‘ish rolls downhill!!

Fat and Tired,

So you’re no longer including Michigan and Notre Dame on the “elite” list, huh? Glad I changed your mind.

USC? Let’s see, this year they’re 6-2 (like UGA). For the previous 4 years they had no NCs (that you love sooooo much) and finished:

2010: 8-5
2009: 8-4
2008: 11-1
2007: 10-2 (the year UGA finished #2 in the final BCS poll)

If that’s “elite” to you, then so be it.

You havent changed my mind Michigan and Notre Dame are elite level schools

Elite level schools once they get a good leader can compete over night

Take FL for example. They had lack luster coaches for 100 years and did nothing until Spurrier

Elite level programs are programs that have:

The money
The Fanbase
The recruiting

Put a good coach in place and those elite level programs come back on top

Just like your example of USC 1977 a championship then a drought until a good Coach came in and took the team to the top

Michigan
Notre Dame
Texas
Florida
Ohio State
Alabama
LSU
Oklahoma
Georgia
Tennessee
USC

All these programs have
The money
The large fanbase
The recruiting

To compete for championships at anytime

Gift, theft, whatever, it all counts in football. If those SOBs want to believe they gave it to us, let them. It’s easier to accept a loss when you think that you were just beaten by the better team, but much harder psychologically if you think that you gave it away. It’s the kind of thing that can turn the mental aspect of this series around. Finally.

Far as I’m concerned, Florida can “give”us the next two or three games. I’ll take it. I’m sure Richt would.

The state of Georgia has ranked in the top 5 in recruiting for 20+ years
UGA has ranks #4 since 1999 in putting players in the NFL
UGA ranks #2 in Money
UGA has a large fanbase
UGA has ranked in the top 5 in merchandise sales for many years

Grinch, The UF UAA has almost 10 Mill in the bank and I think the buyout would be about 6 mill without having to go to the donors. Among the donors are the Steinbrenners, Griffin family who have given over 75 million the last 10 years alone, Disney family and others. The buyout will not be a problem. I like Muschamp and hope he succeeds, but Spurrier proved that it could be done at Florida and the bar has risen since then. Muschamp just needs to control Weis who would rather do it his way even if the talent is not there for his offense yet. I do not doubt for a minute that if next year is like this it will not be a 3rd. Like I said, the Zooker would have been fired during year 2 had he not won the East. Jeremey Foley fired him on Thursday during Georgia week that year and let him finish the season.
