Gators didn’t give the game to Georgia — Dawgs took it

Aaron Murray made some clutch runs. (Jason Getz / AJC)

Aaron Murray made some clutch runs. (Jason Getz / AJC)

A few more thoughts about Saturday’s Georgia victory over Florida. …

My wife and I dropped by a Halloween party late Saturday, and one of my neighbors asked if I thought Georgia deserved to win, pointing to the points the Dawgs got as a result of Florida turnovers in their own territory — as if the Gators giftwrapped the game.

To the contrary, those Florida turnovers were anything but unforced. The first fumble by Chris Rainey, recovered by Bacarri Rambo, was caused by the returning Alec Ogletree (who bounced back nicely from a rusty start early in the game). And Frankie Hammond’s fumble, recovered by Shawn Williams, was forced by Jarvis Jones, who had a career day against the Gators.

Yes, the Dogs most certainly deserved their hard-fought win. …

(Speaking of Jones, he’s one of the nominees in ESPN’s Capitol One Cup Impact Performance of the Week vote. You can vote for him here.)

One of the more impressive aspects of Georgia’s win in Jacksonville was that it was in spite of several key players having off days. Aaron Murray missed nine consecutive passes at one point, and some of them weren’t even close. At times, he looked like he was on a completely different page of the playbook from the receiver. Blair Walsh continued his meltdown (though, frankly, I think that might have ended up working in the Dogs’ favor by prompting Mark Richt to be a bit bolder in the red zone, telling Mike Bobo to operate under the assumption that he had four downs to work with). Isaiah Crowell was sporadically effective but again ended up spending more time on the sideline than should be the case with any starting tailback. And the normally reliable Drew Butler had his worst day ever punting.

Had those folks played up to par and had Georgia’s special teams not been abysmal, the game wouldn’t have been nearly as close. …

On the other hand, give credit to Murray for making some clutch runs and throwing some nice balls, too, particularly on the two fourth-down touchdowns — though credit is also due to receivers Michael Bennett and Tavarres King for going up and taking the ball a la A.J. Green, despite being closely covered. Murray had a couple of passes dropped, too. …

I praised Bobo in Saturday night’s report for some gutsy calls, and overall I thought he called a good game. There were a few times when great play calls were undone by Murray’s inaccuracy. But there were several times in the third quarter when Bobo again fell into trying to run diminutive Carlton Thomas up the middle, a low-percentage play against just about any SEC defense. And while Richard Samuel came through big-time for the Dogs when he got the call to go up the middle, I wish Bobo would give up on trying to use Samuel on the toss sweep. It nearly always results in a loss of yardage. That’s just not Samuel’s game. …

From the silly is-he-or-isn’t-he-going-to-start pregame warmup business with John Brantley to the trading of timeouts as Florida tried in vain to draw Georgia offsides on a third-down play in the fourth quarter, Will Muschamp’s attempts at mind games were unsuccessful. Speaking of the third-down defense, Georgia’s turnaround from last year in that aspect of the game this season has been spectacular. …

And, lastly, didn’t it feel great to see Georgia finally be able to get a couple of first downs when it needed to kill the clock to preserve a win?

Grinch…the three schools you mention, though they have struggled as of the last three years (ND longer), their fan base expects nothing short of National Championships…unlike UGA, who’s happy with beating Tech and Florida 25% of the time…thats why all three will win another National Championship before UGA plays in one…so keep the status quo in Athens; it seems to work for yall…

We have a depth chart which comes into play when players regardless of position are not preforming up to par . Why does this not apply to kickers ? Brandon Bogotay is a senior{on scholarship} kicker . Why not let him start this week vs new mexico state . That may light a fire under #57 . Also, the biggest need i see for the dawgs in 2012 in a FULL TIME SPECIAL TEAMS COACH !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, obviously, you know nothing about what you are talking about. You went the simple route obviously (11×3 million a year .. alas, it must be $33 million spent right). But check in your vast array of researching skills to find when CMR started getting paid the $2.85 million salary he is getting now. Just check for me. Here’s a hint, it wasn’t 2001.

Have not read many comments so this is just my comments from the game sitting on the UGA side at about the 15 yard line:

1. UGA outplayed us and deserved the win.
2. Muschamp obviously thought UGA was better as his hiding Brantley and announcing Brissett as the starter is right up there when Richt changes the UGA uniforms; very juvenile at best.
3. Murray’s receivers salvaged a bad day passing when they literally took the ball away from our DB’s on the two TD passes. Great cathes.
4. UGA fans were respectful to me after the game (probably because we are a house divided).
5. Samuels played his best in the years that I have watched him.
6. I would quickly take Bobo over Charlie Weis in a trade. Dude has no clue how to anticipate defensive adjustment and/or make adjustments himself. No wonder he lost to Navy at ND. He WILL cause Muschamp to be fired unless Muschamp takes a more active role in starter selection at QB.
7. Rainey sucks.
8. Demps is unbelievable.
9. Georgia earned it by being disiplined (few penalties) and better coached (never thought I would say that again in this series).
10. This comment is in no way meant to be disrespectful but I was amazed at the reaction of the fans at the end of the game. But then again I remember how I reacted to the occasional win prior to 1990.

Congrats Dawgs; now run the dang table and hopefully we can beat S. Carolina if Arkansas does not.

One last comment; Clemson sure was over rated.

Good to see a classy Gator fan hit the blogs. There have been others, but just a few.

On this comment though. Watching those TDs, if Murray doesn’t put the ball EXACTLY where it was put, the receiver has no shot at a catch. Yes, they were great catches as well, but those throws were straight money.

Are you going for the Thomas Brown award for Negativity Flat tire? To answer the question with a question, have the three teams mentioned been an elite team the last 3 years. Nope.

I think the point of the post with Michigan, USC, and Notre Dame is this. Being considered “elite” may draw in a big name coach, but doesn’t mean anything on a scoreboard. Again, sometimes, like Bama, you get lucky and land a Saban. But how many of them are out there? I mean, USC is the most recent from that group to be considered elite and they got stuck with Lame Kitten.

Bury, it is troll banter imo. UF has played Bama, LSU, Auburn, and UGA over the last four weeks and their D is still #14 in the nation. They have a fantastic young defense that will get even better. Return men did OK, I would say, and the O is captive to the QB. If Brantley gets healthy or one of the freshmen has a light bulb experience, look out. IMHO, both UGA and UF are better than they are credited. LSU and Bama are great this year, though. Top 5 Ds against very strong schedules.

A mediocre UGA team beats an even worse FL team….Not exactly something to brag about this year, now is it, Dawg fans? I didn’t exactly see many of you flying the flags on your cars or slapping a dozen magnets on your car after that so-called “win”. Face this sobering reality: Even if South Carolina loses to 8th ranked Arkansas this week and wins against Florida, you will still be shut out of the SEC Championship Game by virtue of a tie in the SEC East with SC. Head to head competition breaks the tie and you stay home. If they do happen to lose to both of those teams, you will possibly go to the SEC CG and get pummeled by either LSU or Alabama. Choose your poison. Either way, I predict that UGA will lose.

1988 Notre Dame won the National Championship
Notre Dame is tied with Alabama with the most National Championships

Michigan has the most wins in NCAA football and has more National Championships than UGA

USC is top 10 in wins and is 2nd in national titles and has the most heisman winners

So yes I think that resume states they are still elite programs MORON

Thanks for the comments fellas; As we were driving from the hotel at Fernandina, my wife, her mom and a good friend all made our predictions as we do each week. I said that I would have to make 2, 1 if Brantley played and 1 if he did not. My no Brantley pick was UGA 31 FL 10; my with Brantley pick was UGA 24 UF 20 and added that Samuels would play a significant role because we cannot stop a power back. At the beginning of the 4th Qtr, a UGA fan my age leaned over to me and said, If you could predict this why did it take Bobo an entire half to make the adjustment. I swear that this is what I picked. Wish I was that good at the stock market.

The DAWGS got lucky. If the Gators QB had been completely healthly the Gators would have blowed the DAWGS out. Give UGA defense credit they did what they had to do. But they are not going to win the SEC East. USC is going to win that when they beat Arkansas this weekend and then take care of what is left of the Gators on November 12th.
