Dogs face two opponents: Gators and Jacksonville hang-up

georgia floridaWhen it comes to what John Jenkins has dubbed the “Cocktail Bowl,” it’s not just the likely return of John Brantley or the speed of Chris Rainey that the Dogs have to worry about.

It’s this mental hang-up that’s apparently developed in the players’ heads about the Gators tending to win this thing even when they’re not the better team. As Aron White noted this week, “People get a little tight during Florida week.”

Actually, on that front the most encouraging thing I’ve heard this week is all the talk from Florida players and coaches (even the ones who just arrived) about Georgia’s end zone dance … four years ago. Sounds like a team in need of motivation, which is never a good thing for one of the participants in this annual grudge match. (Hence fans’ dismay at Mark Richt’s “fake juice” attempt with the black helmets and pants a couple of years ago.)

Georgia should win this year against a Gators team that’s lost three in a row. But the Jacksonville factor can’t be ignored. On paper, Georgia should have won last year against a Gators team that had lost three in a row, and yet just look at how overamped Aaron Murray came out in that game.

Still, it’s not any perceived Jacksonville jinx that worries me the most. It’s that Georgia has yet to play a complete game this season and continues to have red zone problems. The special teams meltdowns don’t help, either.

The mobility of John Brantley will be a big factor in the game. (Associated Press)

The mobility of John Brantley will be a big factor in the game. (Associated Press)

As for the Florida QB situation, I don’t think the uncertainty over who the Dogs will face is any big deal. Todd Grantham’s defense may have to play whack-a-mole with Florida’s three quarterbacks plus Trey Burton in the wildcat, but they’ve known that all along. As Richt said this week, “We’re preparing for their offense not the quarterback.”

If Brantley is in, the Dogs will have to think more about the passing game, whereas if it’s one of the true freshmen, they’ll likely load the box to stop Rainey and Jeff Demps. And no matter who’s in the game, Cornelius Washington and company will be trying to apply as much pressure as possible. That’s where Brantley’s mobility coming back from an ankle injury could come into play.

But the Dogs have to be concerned about Rainey and Demps’ speed, especially if they get to the outside. The Gators no doubt will be throwing to the backs to try to get them the ball with some space to run. The Dogs also have to control Burton, who gashed them for 110 yards and two touchdowns last year running out of the wildcat.

On defense for Georgia, it won’t help that Kwame Geathers and Shawn Williams have to sit out the first half, but getting Washington and Alec Ogletree back is a big plus.

Assuming Brantley isn’t hobbled, the two teams are fairly closely matched, so mistakes will probably be a big key. Georgia gave away a game against South Carolina that way, but Florida hasn’t forced any turnovers in the past three games, muffed four punts and turned the ball over three times last week and leads the SEC in penalties, so if the Dogs can manage to hold on to the ball and avoid late hits and such, the Gators might self-destruct.

Keeping Isaiah Crowell in the game is a key for the Dogs. (Associated Press)

Keeping Isaiah Crowell in the game is a key for the Dogs. (Associated Press)

This will be the best defense Georgia has faced since the first two games of the season, but the Gators have had trouble stopping the run lately so keeping Isaiah Crowell on the field should be a major objective for the Dogs. And if Crowell is successful early on, that’ll open up the play-action for Murray and his receivers (even without Malcolm Mitchell) against a young Florida secondary that hasn’t been tested much this year (because opponents have been able to move on the ground).

Both teams have had some shaky special teams play, but while Blair Walsh has missed quite a few field goal attempts this season, the Gators’ Caleb Sturgis has made 15 of 16. So let’s hope it doesn’t come down to a kicking duel.

Bottom line: If Georgia avoids turnovers, gets pressure on the quarterback (whoever it is) and does a decent job against the Gators’ running game, the Dogs should come out the victor.

But it’s Jacksonville. So the biggest thing Georgia needs to do is win its own mind game.

Feel free to share your own views of this year’s Georgia-Florida showdown and the Jacksonville jinx.

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking several years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but other schools will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 50, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

I don’t have a good feeling about this weekend. It’s Florida, it’s Jacksonville, we are supposed to win, they are supposed to lose. It doesn’t matter who we have at HC, OC or DC, we just seem to fold up and either get crushed or give the game away.

Why must we always lose to Florida….even when we wind up winning the SECC (2005, for example). 2007 seems like it was just a dream and never really happened…*sigh

We should win this game!!! But 2 weeks for Florida to prepare and 2 weeks for our coaches to prepare and I like Florida”s chances!!! I just have lost all our confidence in coach Richt. Too many times he just seems like he is not involved in any aspect of the game. I still think of his comment he made a couple of weeks ago on the call in show on Monday night!!! The caller asked why we go to the spread when we get inside the red zone and he stated “I haven’t noticed that I”ll have to go back and look at the tape.” Folks this is Monday 2 days after the game and you haven”t looked at the tape??? As much as I hate Florida and love my Dawgs if we lose it might be a good thing. Coach Richt would be guranteed the door!!! 2-11 record against arch rival will not cut it!!! So the 1st time in in my life, I really don’t care if we lose to the Gaytors!!! I am just tired of winning on talent alone. I would like to see us win the games every once in a while we shouldn”t!!! UF was preseason top 10. Previous 2 recruiting classes were tops in the nation. UGA was nobodies top anything and then got worse when the season started. We “should” have won last year? Based on what? That being UF’s surprisingly worst team in a while? Against our what?

This series has had extremely few true upsets, probably less than most other rivalries. Unfortunetely, I agree that when the team are pretty even, when the score is predictably close, we have not won our fair share.

First, 2007, we weren’t supposed to beat UF, we did. 2004, we weren’t supposed to be able to go into Auburn and win, we did. 2006, we weren’t supposed to beat #5 Auburn in Auburn but again, we did.

This whole wanting to lose just to get rid of CMR is disasterous thinking. I would rather see the ship righted with the same guy for pure continuity purposes than risk starting over afte 11 years. The Gators had a down year with Meyer, now they have Muschamp (I realize a little different situation with Meyer leaving on his own) and they look LOST to say the least. This edition of the Cocktail series is the biggest in a very long time. It’s not just the 3-18 streak UF is on. It’s not just CMR needing to show he can beat UF more than 20% of the time. The SEC East is in flux, with Tennessee and Florida being down, South Carolina moving to become a power, and Georgia trying to stay afloat and assert it’s place at the top. Someone is going to emerge as a legitimate contender with the Wicked Witches of the West and a win this year would be a huge stepping stone. We don’t want to give Muschamp any room to build a beach head- we need to drive him back into the Atlantic Ocean. Sic ‘em, Dawgs, no mercy!

A little overdramatic Pulpwood. Georgia may not beAlabama, but then again no one else in the conference is either. But two championships in the last 10 years isn’t exactly irrelevant. Just ask the teams that didn’t win the championship in ‘02 and ‘05, I’m sure they would have loved to trade places with UGA. And Georgia was probably the best team in the country at the end of the ‘07 season.

The coaching has gone downhill in recent years, and it’s hard to explain. But a program with the talent of UGA is just one good coaching hire from being on top. Richt is barely hanging on, but the rest of this year is his chance to show that he can still be that man. If not him, then someone else will seize the opportunity. Eventually.

Bama in Atlanta

October 28th, 2011

I think the biggest coaching weakness UGA has is the inability to make on-the-field adjustments and then some halftime adjustments. I’m sure Richt has been preparing the D for UF’s offense as he stated but if UF comes out in their version of the Wildcat, goes no-huddle, etc. then it could be a problem. Otherwise, I think the UGA D can handle UF’s offense even with Brantley at the helm.

(Tried to post a longer version of this comment earlier, so it may show up later). Reasons this is huge beyond the obvious ones: The SEC East is down and someone, either UF, UT, SC or UGA, is going to step up to assume dominance and contend with the bad boys in the West. UGA needs to win big to prevent Muschamp from getting established as a contender and show the recruits who they need to sign up with. Go Dawgs, GATA!

And yes, Tebow was hurt but he was playing in 2007. A hurt Tebow though was better than 95% of the QBs in college football .. EVER. And you will never see a team favored if the starting QB is still playing and they are ranked #9 while playing the #20 team in the nation.

Bama in Atlanta has hit the nail on the head. My single biggest issue with Georgia, more than even Bobo, is the lack of halftime adjustments. We simply do not make the adjustments on either side of the ball. I despise Auburn with a passion, more than any other opposing team, but that team last year made the type of adjustments that wins games and championships. How many times were they behing going into the second half last year? If you think about it, our biggest issues this year have been putting teams away in the 2nd half and special teams. The reason we struggle to hold on to a lead the 2nd half is that the other team is outcoaching us on adjustments.

ARdawg, I agree. If Richt doesn’t win this game, he should be fired. 2-9 against Florida shouldn’t be acceptable. If he can’t beat them at least half the time, we need to find someone who can.

I don’t get the “Tebow was hurt in ‘07″ argument as an excuse for why Georgia won that game. First, Tebow had a huge game that day. I think he threw for more than 300 yards, rushed for a TD, and didn’t have a single pick. If he was hurt, we should all be so injured.

Second, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then. Georgia was just destined to win that game.

I haven’t gone too easy on Richt in recent years, but give the guy his due – he really turned the ‘07 season around, beginning with the UF game. Georgia was simply a better team than UF that year.

Frankly, the actualy complaint that I got from your comment was that he was so uninvolved that he doesn’t even know what they are doing in the red zone, (which my point is that he does WELL beyond what any caller would even know to question, and in details more timely than “tape” would tell him anyway). But if you really want to say that it’s just the timing of looking at the tape that was your main concern, then I was mistaken.

My guess is that the staff at Georgia reviews tape of thier previous game in pretty much the same manner as everybody else.

BK. I’d add coaching to the list of “if UGA can….” to break the jinx. The dawgs have been on the short end of that stick most recently during the UM years. If there’s one glaring example its having imagination to call plays that are least expected during the game. FL along w/the rest of the league is light years ahead of the GA coaching staff in this department. A lot of it or lack of it on special teams. If FL has trouble executing its offense you can bet the hedges in Athens they’ll employ trickery and if UGA is true to form FL will be successful.

If GA loses this game, some of the “blame” will fall on CMR and his coaching staff.

I agree about the turnover thing. In my opinion this is what has to happen for the Dawgs to win:
1) Ball control
2) No more than 1 turnover
3) I.C. runs for over 100 yards
4) Special teams finally put it together
5) D plays the old “Junkyard Defense”
6) Murray must play his best game
7) Do NOT sit on the ball IF we get a nice lead going into the 4th quarter. Lay the wood to them!

It all sounds great, but have to admit that I lack the confidence in this team to play a full 60 minutes of football.

Rainey and Demps are the two Gators I’m worried about, but I believe that we have a good defense. Grantham better have them ready to go from the first snap this week. There are no excuses on that side of the ball.

Aaron Murray is a better QB than anything Florida has right now. We need for him to play like it. He may not have Malcolm Mitchell, but he does have Charles, King, Brown, Bennett, and Crowell to work with.

As far as turnovers and any number of other unforeseen occurrences, I think the main thing is to find a way to win. I don’t care if it’s pretty or not. We just need guys to get the job done when it matters the most. If they’ll do that, we’ll win.

You know it is sort of odd to me that Rainey, of all people, would be hurt and offended by past offenses–an end zone dance four years ago. I’m with Bill on this one, the fact that Florida is trying to use this to motivate themselves is a good sign. It is also funny to me that Gator fans don’t see calling timeouts in the last seconds while ahead by a mile, dancing, taunting, and “rub your face in it” bad sportsmanship by the Gators the next year as being much worse than the end zone dance. If someone has cause for motivation it is the Dawgs–the terrible sportsmanship by the Gators still hasn’t been answered. Now let’s answer it with class, and show them how to win and be gentlemen at the same time. Go Dawgs!

All you people who call yourselves Georgia fans, but then have no faith in the men who are coaching your team and talk trash about them really make me mad. Don’t you under stand how good of a coach Mark Richt is? It’s not his fault that the Bulldogs haven’t been able to get a national championship recently. They had the offense to do it with back in 2008, but Willie Martinez, the worst defensive coordinator that Georgia has had in a long while, was still with the dawgs. At one point under his coaching, teams were averaging 33 points against Georgia over the course of 9 games, they were 76th in the nation in sacks, and 116th in forced turnovers. Now look at the amazing changes that Coach Todd Grantham have implemented to get closer every year to a championship level defense. Now that Georgia has recruited a great group of guys, they’ll be ready to contend for the national title in a year or two and everything negative that was said about the coaching staff (except for possibly Bobo’s overly-conservative play calling) will be taken back.

He hired Stacy Searels and now Will Friend as his OL Coach instead of promoting Dave Johnson to the position. IMHO if the Dawgs lose tomorrow Coach Richt will be relieved as our Head Coach after the season is over. Those of us on Mark Richt’s case, and the case of the UGA coaches, are critical of professionals – very highly paid professionals – who are doing a crummy, substandard job, and who have run the UGA football program down.

To mistake criticism of these people for criticism of our team, or a lack of loyalty to UGA is missing the point.

Mark Richt has done nothing recently to deserve any “loyalty,” unless the standard for UGA football is a program which can barely beat Vandy, and has little chance of competing against the big boys.

When it comes to UGA’s football program, the emperor has no clothes.

If you don’t want to have a nationally competitive football program in Georgia, you can go cheer for Tech. In the meantime, let’s get a coach in Athens who is hired to perform as the highest level, accepting nothing but the best.

If they can not get it in for 7 then this game may come down to the kicker’s foot. I still believe in Walsh but the misses have seemed to get into his head worst than any Jax jinx we can think of. Wavy Gravy

@david

One must consider, when comparing Crowell’s stats, that there are very few FBS programs who have been forced to rely upon a true Freshman as their starting running back. One must also consider the fact that Georgia’s defense in the past 5 games has posted much better stats than in their first 2 games. UAB would have posted impressive stats if they had played this same schedule. After all, they did recently defeat the Mighty UCF Knights.

Tennessee and Florida have legitimate excuses for fielding an inexperienced squad this year. After 11 years as Georgia’s Head Coach, Mark Richt has no legitimate excuse for the sorry state of the UGA program.

Florida wins 27-24. Not because the Gators are that good, but because Georgia is just that bad.

If GA loses this game, Richt has to go. We can’t keep losing to FL and expect the rest of our season to be ok. Not going to work. We need a coach who can beat FL at least as often as Dooley did. Or at least half the time. Richt’s record against FL is just abominable and we can’t go on like this. He wins or he should go. And we should explain it to him in those terms.

Where was the Jax factor in the 1980s, when you guys were a lot more competitive in this series?

It’s time to admit that for a variety of reasons–money, facilities, population shifts, coaching and recruiting at surrounding schools, and recent decade success trends–Florida and Georgia are on opposite trend paths, with the upward path belonging to Florida.

At least Georgia has the Falcons, the Braves, and Coca-Cola.

As for college football… Herschel Walker is long since retired. I know you’re used to it, but you need to accept it and stop dreaming about being something you’re not.

As the day gets going, the potential is there for a Great day, if Georgia can beat Florida and Clemson can pound Tech. I think we finally have the defense we need and the offensive playmakers to handle the Gators. Of COURSE I’m nervous; until it happens it’s all just talk.

Clemson is going to wear Tech out (thrown in for you lurking Tech fans).

Go Dawgs!!!

Charlotte,

The series will turn again in UGA’s favor and don’t forget that we still OWN you in the overall series record! And that “trend” you think you see in success factors is just an illusion.

Go Dawgs!

Oh well… If Tech loses, then we can call that a victory for Georgia.

A Dawg’s gotta take whatever he can get these days. Times are hard.

I don’t normally go on rivals’ sites and offer my opinions–I think the trolls who DO are generally lame little brats with too much time on their hands. I am only here because it was a head-lined link from my Gators’ Sportslink email page…once here, I DID read your comments with some interest, and without meaning to come in and “foul your nest”, I do have an observation:
The biggest difference I can see between ‘Dawg fans and Gators is that you accept, even excitedly EMBRACE your mediocrity. We find it unbearable, to the point of unacceptability. There is NO WAY we would accept year after year of underachieving disappointment the way that y’all do and are. I could never figure that out in your program the last, well, let’s face it, almost a decade now.
I guess I finally understand: the HOPE that you MIGHT beat us now and then is enough for you all, at this point. Yes, as one of your commenters put it, we ARE “teed up to be beaten” by Richt and Co., but I warn you, big changes are already happening down deep in our program, and this will be the last chance (you had last year, too) that that will be the case for a long time.

Really doesn’t matter to me anymore.

This season was lost before the first game. Richt has wasted tons of great talent since he’s been at Georgia, he’s just not capable of coaching in this league any longer. Really four years is long enough to put up with this crap…the fact that he wasn’t fire last year shows that alumni and donors are willing to put up with it. We are destined to become the University of Pittsburgh in the SEC…once great now an also ran. I figure I’ll never see UGA compete for a national championship again in my lifetime. I think I’ll go fishing…..

DRU2012: Yes FLA has dominated the last 2 decades and have had a superior football program during this time. However, you’re just another ignorant FLA fan, who has lost his memory (or too young) of UGA’s 15-5 record in the 2 decades (1970-89) prior to your “recent” edge. And, not to mention the 46-40-2 overall series record for UGA. UGA fans don’t accept anything, especially when it comes to FLA and arrogant FLA fans. Go back to your own website boy!
