Fan talk: Can Dawgs ever feel confident going to Jacksonville?

The return of Cornelius Washington should help Georgia's defense. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

The return of Cornelius Washington should help Georgia's defense. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

The annual migration of Georgia fans down to the coast and greater Jacksonville area has begun. How are you feeling about this game? It’s Jacksonville, so even though on paper Georgia should win, some fans are a bit nervous, as we find out in the latest installment of Junkyard Mail. …

Stewart Smithwick writes: I can’t remember the last time I was this nervous for a game. Especially against UF because I haven’t felt this confident in a win against UF in quite some time. We have a ton of momentum going into this and UF has literally zero momentum. The players seem to be playing with confidence, the D specifically. They seem to have a little bit of that swagger back that they used to have a few years ago. I believe that if we play a complete game on both side of the ball we should come away with a W. The D has been one of our biggest problems when it comes to this game and now I am more confident in the D than I have been for years. Is the D what wins the game for us this year or is it just me?

I’m not sure it’s possible, considering the trend of recent years, for Dawgs fans to ever feel confident going into Jacksonville, no matter how the two teams look on paper. But I think you’re right about defense being the key to a win for Georgia. I expect the Dogs’ offense to move in fits and starts (probably starting out slowly, as has been Aaron Murray’s unfortunate habit of late). But no matter who is at quarterback for the Gators, Georgia has to control Florida’s running game. So far this season, the Dogs have been pretty stout against the run, though they didn’t do that well in that department against Vandy. I’m hoping that was just an off night caused by a) overconfidence and b) losing a bit of their composure. Having Cornelius Washington and Alec Ogletree back is very big for Georgia.

Allen Kennedy writes: Bill, if you remember, I responded to you last week about our special teams … how we had our 3’s and 4’s out there? Here is a quote from Richt: “Every time guys get healthy, that does give you more depth in your special teams. Not to say [Alec] Ogletree couldn’t run down and cover a kick too. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more of that. Even Shawn Williams, as that Vanderbilt game was going on and he knew what was at stake every time the ball was being kicked, he was personally taking younger guys off the team and putting himself on the team to help us win, so I wouldn’t be shocked to see that.” It’s hard to stay behind this guy when he says things like this and it’s a prime example of how he just dismisses the importance of our special teams. Special teams is a huge part of the whole game.

You’re preaching to the choir on that here. One thing that I noticed in watching that video about the 1980 team that I wrote about yesterday is that the Dogs had a lot of starters on special teams that year. I’ve never been a big fan of Urban Meyer in most things, but his approach to special teams — making them truly special and an honor to serve on — makes a lot more sense than filling out the special teams with freshmen and walk-ons and only those upperclassmen who feel like jumping in. It’s definitely one of Mark Richt’s blind spots.

Matt McGahee writes: Hey, this isn’t neccessarily Jacksonville-related but it has been a question that has been burning a hole in my brain.  Why has Bobo abandoned the fullbacks? I remember many of great runs by Brown, Lumpkin, Ware, and Moreno that were led by fantastic blocks by Brannan Southerland. Or giving it to [Shaun] Chapas for a solid 4 yard gain when trying to kill the clock. Or being in the red zone and running up the middle on the first two downs and then play action and send the fullback out to catch the TD pass. I mean, someone needs to ask Bobo or Richt why we are not using the fullbacks to assist the run. It has been very successful in the past.

Some fans suspect that the Georgia coaches have been keeping use of the fullbacks in their pocket up to now so they can spring that aspect of the game as a surprise, but I’m not so sure about that. I think it’s more likely that the coaches don’t have confidence in senior Bruce Figgins and sophomore Zander Ogletree as runners, though both have done some stellar work this season as blockers. What’s more puzzling to me is why Mike Bobo hasn’t had Murray throwing to Figgins more out of the backfield. That’s definitely a barely used weapon in the Dogs’ offensive arsenal.

OkieDawg writes: Bill, I hope you know the answer to this very important Bulldog sports-related question. How do they determine when and where alcohol will be sold at a college football game? For example, beer was sold at the Liberty Bowl and in Atlanta for the Boise vs. UGA game. But in Jacksonville, TWLOCP, they close the taps. What gives?

Generally, alcohol isn’t served at most college games, especially the ones held in on-campus stadiums. Exceptions crop up at noncampus sites such as the Georgia Dome. But both schools have been trying to steer the image of the Jacksonville game away from the “Cocktail Party” reputation in recent years, so that probably explains the decision there. Frankly, I don’t see the problem since I go to a football game to watch the game, not to drink. But I know there are many others who feel differently.

Beach Dawg Living Among Gators writes: Bill, help me understand the disciplinary program within the SEC, if understanding anything the SEC does. It is obvious that they intently scrutinize, with some exceptions (Fairley), personal foul penalties and administer punishment. However, it does not appear that the same level of scrutiny is applied to situations of failures in personal behavior, e.g. substance abuse. Cornelius Washington, UGA, was suspended two games for a DUI but the three LSU players were suspended for only one game. Is the SEC again favoring (Auburn 2010) a national contender or is there a lack of consistency in substance abuse cases (and yes I consider DUI to be substance abuse)?

While the conference weighs in on discipline for on-field infractions, it’s up to the schools to decide punishment for substance abuse, arrests and so on. Obviously, Georgia’s idea of punishment for such things is a bit tougher than LSU’s.

Paul Suttles writes: Bill, since it seems that the media has not started talking about this topic in earnest, I figure it’s time Georgia fans begin making their feelings known. On ESPN and in other national sports media outlets, some calls are already being made for a rematch of the Alabama-LSU game for the BCS title. The justification is that these two programs are without a doubt the two best programs in college football this season and one game in the regular season should not prevent the loser from having a shot for the BCS title. Even Tony Barnhart has an article on CBSSportsline.com mentioning this possibility. What they all fail to mention is that the loser of that game on Nov. 5 will have not only failed to win their conference, but will have failed to win their division. Think back to 2007. One of the main reasons given for Georgia being leapfrogged by LSU for a spot in the BCS title game to play Ohio State was that Georgia failed to win their conference and failed to win their division … and no team that finishes third in their own conference deserves the right to play for the BCS title game. This reasoning was put forth by some of the most well-known members of the college football media landscape, including one Mr. Kirk Herbstreit. Coach Richt pleaded his case to the media by claiming that since the #2 and #3 teams ahead of Georgia (who, at the time was ranked #4 in the BCS) lost, then logically speaking and despite not having won the SEC East or playing in the SEC championship game, Georgia should move up to the #2 spot to take on Ohio State for the BCS title. A large majority of the media turned their noses up at Coach Richt and trotted out the “win your own division/conference” talk while they jumped another 2-loss team ahead of Georgia into the BCS #2 spot. Now, some might say that the difference between that year and this year is that both Bama and LSU far outclass any other program in the nation. While I do agree that those two teams are playing the best football of any team right now, at the end of 2007, Georgia and Southern Cal were playing better than any team in the nation. If a team has no business playing for the BCS title if they do not win their own division or conference in 2007, then the same should hold true in 2011.

I agree with you completely, though I think the Bama-LSU rematch scenario is highly unlikely. But if it comes down to poll voters choosing between a one-loss SEC team and an undefeated Boise State, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. I think the TV honchos would do all they could to prevent an all-SEC BCS game from happening, however. And generally TV rules college football these days.

Relax—this will be an easy win for the Dawgs—this fla team may be the worst in 20 years. The Dawgs O should roll and the Dawgs D will shut down that bad florida offense. I can’t even get any fla fans to take my bets, even laying 7-10 points. They are expecting a beatdown. Ga should win by 17+. I’ll be partying all night after the game in St. Simons.

I would like to see our players approach this game with a pretty high level of confidence. When we score a touchdown let’s act like we have scored one before. No need for dancing and such just flip the ball to the referee and head to the sidelines. Let the action on the field do the talking for you. We played right into Vandy’s plan and now are minus two starters for the 1st half. Go Dawgs and GATA!

..and Richt knows that the Dawgs have no chance, and that this year is “smoke and mirrors”, so far. Why else would he undermind what they have done by saying this week that had UF had the Dawgs last 5 games they would have won those, too…so what UGA has done so far does not really mean much.

Unfortunately, UF will be at full strength for the fiirst time in 5 weeks, and their D is MUCH better than the predictable UGA offense, so this game should be over by halftime – again. But, if the Dawgs D shows up and plays the corners well, not giving up yardage in 10m -15 yards chunks all day, then all bets are off.

BUT, it is highly doubtful that UGA can cope with the UF speed on offense, or toughness on their defense…

cmr’s lack of defense of his players during the vandy debate will have its payback on sat. defense will be the worst of the year. murray will panic and press too hard resulting in turnovers. special teams will be consistent (lousy).
uga homers will be lost and confused as to what happened.

This will be UGA’s toughest game since the South Carolina game and they are coming off of a near loss against Vandy. Hopefully the Dawgs will pull this one out. It’s not a foregone conclusion though looking at their past performance this year and the opponents they’ve faced, except BS and SC of course. The defense has definitely improved but the offense and special teams have sputtered. Not much of a running game right now. They should be recruiting hard at that position. We need more depth. Not having Geathers and Williams in the first half is a cause for concern but Jenkins and Commings are both more than capable in handling the additional playing time. We are coming off a bye week so they should be rested. It is also mid-season, we are playing Florida and the temp. is expected to be about 70 degrees at game time so playing most of a half is not insurmountable. If the offense performs like they are capable of, we can keep their defense off the field. Also, holding Florida to 3 and out will keep our defense rested. When Brantley left the Alabama game, I think the score was 24-10 and Alabama always turns up the heat in the second half, so Brantley’s going down didn’t impact the final results. I know, wishful thinking, I have to go pack…….Sic’em Dawgs

Yes, it is quite curious that no one in the media ever brings up 2007 when they talk about a Bama-LSU rematch. I don’t think LSU can have it both ways. I entered UGA in September of 1967. I wrapped up my degrees by June 1973.

While at UGA and even prior, UGA fans and students and PLAYERS of that era ( 60s-80s) looked forward to playing Florida. Why?

Always, UGA players had the postive attitude. Heck, we were told every year that “Florida had all world QBs and flankers and wide outs and LBs and tackles and safeties and kickers”. We knew that it was a team game however and we knew that to hit and play smart ball, likely UGA would somehow prevail.

Foget all of this history from the ONE 1980 season. It was THAT WAY MOSTof my era, as a high school kid in 60s all the way up until Spurrier in the early 90s. Until UGA men want it and I mean really want it ……………….. they will lose.

This is so easy ………………..UGA kids for the last 15-20 years have been full of self doubt. That is a function of coaching. They are today’s kids …………….coddled and afraid to get out there and make their mark in UGA history. Until UGA men on the field are ready to step out on that field with real swagger, mental toughness and bad ass attitude, they
will continue to lose.

GUTLESS they are if they lose this game and if they do, RICHT NEEDS TO RESIGN.

Go Dogs.

UGA is the better team, but as bad as I hate to say it, I can see Murray playing too tightly and trying to do too much, us turning the ball over, and Florida making some big plays on special teams. I really wouldn’t be surprised if UGA out gains Florida by 150 yards and loses.

What’s wishful thinking? That we don’t try long FG? I’m not sure of that stats, but I assume that having some of the best kickers in the contry for many years would tend to prop that up. Not so sure that a bad thing.

You guy seem to think that the plan is to fail on 3rd and 4 SO THAT we can attempt long FG this year. I’m guessing that the coaches would rather score TDs too, but since walsh had MADE More FG’s outside of 30 than most anyone else has even attempted total it’s still better than punting in that situation.

On the LSU/Bama topic, why would anyone want to see the same two teams play twice? Especially in a system that determines it’s champion by a vote. The better of the two teams has already been determined. Why should the loser get another chance? If they want to make a new system with a playoff that actually requires teams to earn a trip to a championship then I would be on board.

dawgfan

I don’t understand why anyone would be confident about this game. Do you honestly think we would fair any better against LSU or Bama? They are light years ahead of us. Mark Richt is absolutely right. Flip those schedules and the records would completely flip flop. This game is very evenly matched on paper.

The past few years everyone has tried to be a hero and do too much in this game. Hence all the dumb turnovers. Hence Sanders Commings going for a Sportscenter highlight instead of just falling on a fumble that could have been the difference in the game. Florida just shows up and plays football. They’ve been the more mature team. That’s been the difference.

Another factor is that they don’t have Mike Bobo and we do. Mike Bobo lost us the game last year with his reckless flag football playcalling. Aaron Murry can’t throw interceptions in overtime if his offensive coordinator doesn’t let him throw the ball in overtime. A play that allows a freshmen QB to throw the ball in the middle of the field like that in OT should never have been called. Mike Bobo is a substandard play caller that has been blessed with outstanding offensive talent and he has very little to show for it.

Thanks.

Not so sure this Florida team is all that powerful. To say that they were right there with Alabama until their quarterback got hurt proves nothing. Tennessee was tied with Alabama at halftime last week. Tennessee??? Dawgs should win. I’m hopefully optimistic.

Not worried about what Florida players think of UGA. Let Florida come into this game being overconfident that they’re gonna walk all over the Dawgs. Dawgs, do your talking on the field.

Losing Mitchell for this game is huge. It was reported earlier his hammie was not torn and he most likely would return for the FL game w/2 weeks of rest and care to recoup. So much for GA’s medical and training staff. Lets hope M. Brown’s performance vs vandy carries over to the FL game. Yet, I doubt he’ll be as wide open against FL’s defenders as he was in Vandy game.

It’s like an omen when you consider Mitchell out, the suspensions of williams and geathers for first half of the game, toss in wooten being out and the wind in GA’s sails seem to be fading going into this game. Wish I could hang my hat on the dawgs D and running game to make up for these losses but who really had confidence in the running game or the D even during the best of times. There’s always doubt when it came to how the dawgs would perform from week to week. Their wins over lesser SEC teams were not confidence builders especially against Vandy late in that game.

Maybe, just maybe, these dawgs will come out and give their fans a performance like the ‘05 team did in the SEC Ch game vs LSU. I didn’t think they had a chance in that game either. I think they’ll need another miracle this w/e the way things are shaping up going into this game.

@Dawg258 – Obviously you have never had a strain of a major leg muscule (calf, Quad, Hamstring). the ONLY thing to heal them is time and two weeks is not close to enough. You have to give the injury two weeks AFTER if feels fine before you are ready to go full-speed. There is no “tough out” a major strain, AND if you rush the return, you will cause the injury to become chronic and effect the young man for the rest of his life. I am glad he is not playing. We should rehab him at least until GT or else we will never have the same player as we had the first sevral games.

Anyone on here from Athens? Where is the location of that “black hole” in Clarke County that consumes our talent?

My take

October 27th, 2011
2:23 pm

QB position should be advantage UGA but with AM, it is unlikely that he will be the winning difference in that he chokes in big games. Last year, HE alone gave them the game. Advantage Florida, given their their back up QBs ARE BIG GAME experienced.

Special teams. Should be a UGA advantage BUT Walsh is also choking and he too added to UGA’s difficult time last year vs Florida with at least two misses. Florida will pull a SC or a Vandy or Ole Miss and score on us maybe twice with all of their speed on On Side kicks, etc. Advantage to Florida.

D teams should be advantage UGA with TWO N guards and D line talent and depth BUT with Gathers out for a half and Williams, our advantage is neutralized. Florida gets the nod here.

Intangibles is also advantage Florida with their blazing speed and the fact they they KNOW they will beat UGA and UGA does not know how to play mentally tough football under CMR.

General offensive strategies? Advantage Florida because Bobo has about 5 plays and if IC is slow or intimidated like he was vs UT, then it will be a rough afternoon. Beyond IC there is 0 depth in the backfield. Mitchell is out and Wooten and Marvlous Marlon Brown is not a big game go to guy. Bennet will make some grabs and Charles, but we do not have the big game talent with T King.

Trick plays? Advantage Florida ………………..UGA ain’t got none. Weis is a skilled O. guy and Bobo is a small college QB coach or middle school coach.

My pick? I WANT UGA to win badly but a 20 year history tells me otherwise .

I fear that, IF we get a 2-TD lead on Florida any time after half-time, we will go into our cute little turtle shell, running 90% of the time and averaging 2 yards per carry. Coach Bobo’s playcalling shows NO killer instinct. We never aim to put the final nail in the coffin — sometimes the body in there isn’t quite dead yet! Poor special teams play lost one game already for us this year and made a few other a lot closer than they should have been. Until CMR takes special teams serious things will not change. CMR has seen a lot of great players lost for the season playing on special teams and would rather not have his best on the field where a fluke thing take out one of his best players. My take on that is: it’s an important part of football and what happens , happens. We need to play our best on special teams because every coach we play knows that their best way to beating Georgia is to exploit our 3rd and 4Th string on special teams.

I hope that LSU or Alabama does play Boise State for the national title. If I had to guess I would say LSU. right now is better than Alabama so let’s say Boise State play’s LSU If that happens LSU will beat Boise State 14 to 24 point’s and maybe these nothing teams playing in nothing conference will finally not even be considered anymore as a top 10 team. Hawaii use to get a lot more respect until Georgia demolished them in the Sugar Bowl. They will never have a serious consideration again.

Can T King step up while Mitchell is down with the hammy. Can Murray not overthrow him if he is open deep? Can Samuel stay on his feet and get some first downs. Will the coaches give Carlton Thomas some carries and he do well and not have turnovers. Will we be smart enough to use the tight ends like last year until the coaches went vanilla in overtime??? Look back at the years where UGA CLEARLY had the better team (1992 and 2002 come to mind) and we lost the game. I’m not sure you can attribute those tow losses (or any of the 18 out of 21) simply to the location. It does beg the question: “What about the State of Georgia gaining some economic benefit from this game”? IF we aren’t going to hold it in Athens and Gainesville, then Atlanta and Jacksonville seems like a logical alternative!

As far as our play on the field, the team I saw against Vandy two weeks ago looked awfully undisciplined (NINE penalties, etc.). Also, we lack the “go for the throat” mentallity that allows us to put teams away. All that said, if this game is close in the end, Florida gets a decided advantage.

I want to see more “I” formation (LETS SHOVE THE BALL DOWN THEIR THROATS). I want to see our defense get after their QB! I also DON’T want to see ERRORS on special team plays or TURNOVERS by the Dawgs!

Less than the best; play calling, special teams, head coaching decisions. We are better at defense, work ethic, and physical fitness. That still is a ship with a few holes in it. That ain’t good! “First-year coaches at Florida have had uncanny success in the series.

Ray Graves (1960), Doug Dickey (1970), Galen Hall (1984), Steve Spurrier (1990), Ron Zook (2002) and Urban Meyer (2005) all beat the Dawgs in their first try. Charley Pell (1979) is the program’s only head coach in the last 50 years to lose to Georgia in his inaugural season.”

Dawg4Life,thats the first positive post Ive seen from anyone in a while.Everyone wants the players and coaches attitudes and habits to change for the better, but all you read on this or any other blog is “we suck, fire the coach, were gonna get beat by FL,if we get lucky and beat FL were gonna get beat by GT or AUB,and on and on and on…..if it is SOOOO horrible to be a dawg fan, which most of you are not,for the love of God,GO AWAY….sorry, just had to vent…headed to Jax

this is the year the dogs finally beat florida! florida is way down, players are quitting midseason and their offense is terrible. Brantley’s not that good and the dog D will shut him down. Murray and IC will light up the scoreboard—this will be an easy win–bet the house on the dogs!!!

The Dawgs will be fine. Reason #1 Charlie W of “UF” and UGA caoch Grantham coached in the pros. Coach “G” with Dallas. Coach “W” at New England. They know each other they will be no suprises. #2 Coach “W” had Tom Brady at QB. Lets face it Brantly is no Brady. #3 “UF” will be rusty at best with Brantly and the two speedy back are coming off injuries. #4 You don’t play as well with a injury mind set. #5 The “UGA” “D” is no joke. # 8th total “D” nation wide. #6 I think this is a different set of dogs. These dogs will hunt where some in the past barked at the moon. GOOO DAWGS.

The reason Vandy stayed close was our OC, not because they are that good and UGA is that bad. The OC stated that his offensive mind set is to get a lead, play conservative and let the defense hold the other team down for the win. Special teams also didn’t help a lot for UGA.
Anybody that thinks these young kids on UGA are going to lay down for the lizards has not been watching this team play. UGA is athletically superior to Florida this year, and these young folks on UGA’s team know how to play. They want to establish their own legacy and they will be ready to play.
The biggest concern UGA fan’s should have in this game, is whether or not the coaches do their job. The DC, I have no doubt will have them ready. The OC, I don’t know about. He has the team to do it, but does he the ability to coach the offense and game plan accordingly? Will he show that he can adjust to the flow of the game, and make changes to his play calling if needed? Mitchell will be missed, but as has been seen, there are other WR’s capable of stepping up and catching the ball as well. It is up to Bobo, to pull his head out of his lower intestinal tract and have a game plan, call the right plays and adjust to the games flow, to make the offense work well. That is the only thing that concerns me. It sure isn’t the players we will put on the field.

How to deploy your crystal pyramid:

Watching at home – Place pyramid atop television. Check alignment against the arc of the Sun. Do not use a compass.

Attending – Place pyramid under Dawgs baseball cap. Do not remove hat after initial kickoff.

I hate the pre-game hand wringing on these blogs. You want to know why the Dawgs of the 60’s through the 80’s owned this series? Confidence. They believed they would win. But more importantly the FANS believed they would win. I just pray that the players aren’t looking at these forums. How could any 18-22 year old young man have any confidence after read all this crap? When you are onstage (and playing in front of 10’s of thousands is an onstage performance) you can feel the energy of the crowd. The players have felt DOUBT from their fans for too long now. If anything goes wrong it turns into “here we go again”. It really does effect the players people! That is why home field is so important. No one complained about Jacksonville until the DawgNation got mind F’d by Spurrier in the 90’s. Now the fan base believes that no matter how good the Dawgs are they will ALWAYS lose to the freaking Gators. That’s just plain WRONG.
Root for your Bulldogs as if it were YOUR son out there playing. You’d never telegraph DOUBT at your son before any game, would you? Cautious optimism doesn’t hack it. The players have to feel BELIEF from the fans. Dawgs win… modestly… 31- 20.

R&B, I agree that has been the plan when we have built large enough margins to win without taking any chances in some previous games (which worked fine at that time) BUT at Vandy, UGA was throwing the ball till well into the 4th quarter in attempts to score. Nothing Vandy was accomplishing was a result of overly conservative play calling. UGA didn’t try to protect the ball till right at the very closing minutes of the game. The reason the game was even close was to blame on the OC if you must, but not because of sitting on the lead. Just having to settle for FG (his responsibility however that fault lies) earlier and also a very blattent defensive letdown. Then some odd stuff happened around all that.

It’s also a little unfair to just claim Grantham will do his job but Bobo won’t. Grantham is working with talent, depth up front, and some of the most experienced backfield we have had in a long time.

Bobo, is leaning on a squad where a sophomore is the old guy, a thin (and I think we all believe, very average Line), 1 RB that would start anywhere else. Sure we have other receivers, but where have they been. You don’t just “call” and adjust player to do well. Clearly he could call some situations better, but he has also made some excellent game adjustment and calls too. His real issue is preparation before the games, in the offseason. (for a variety of reasons, his and others) Anybody can call the plays if they work.

Not saying he has done a good job over the past several years avoiding all those problems. He ownes them. But TODAY, with what he is working with, he is not done a bad job managing the season.

Georgia may be better than Fla but remember we were also better than South Carolina, Ga seems to have a problem establishing team confidence, Losing has a way of eroding confidence and once it sets in its hard to dispel, If the defense can hold and Murray can find his range on long patterns the Dogs should be able to win this game, Lets hope if Ga goes into the 4th quarter with a lead Richt and Bobo won’t try to sit on it.

All of the UGA bashers and fair weather fans picking UF to win, please come back on Sunday or Monday and give UGA credit. Typically it will be Florida was not anygood anyway you should have beat them. Heard this with Tennessee, Miss St and Vandy. You can not have it both ways. If you are predicting UF to win then on Monday morning it can not be that UGA only beat a bad team.
