Mark Richt obviously didn't know his comments to James Franklin were being overheard. (Associated Press)
Time to check some Junkyard Mail. …
Reagan Mabry writes: I have read the various comments/articles and watched all of the videos of the blow-up at the end of the game. I am very disturbed by what Mark Richt said to [Vanderbilt Coach James] Franklin. Do you think this will only continue to hurt the morale down the road by Richt calling one of his players a dumba–? I don’t agree with what Shawn Williams did after the game to another coach and that should not tolerated, but Vandy was throwing cheap shots and we could only guess what was being said on the field. I agree that Grantham went overboard but, come on Richt, vanilla coat that like everything else you do.
Because of the bleeping, it’s difficult to tell exactly what Richt says on the videotape, but assuming the Nashville TV station’s transcript is accurate, it was surprisingly frank talk on the part of the coach, though obviously not intended for public consumption. A couple of thoughts on that: First, Richt learned a lesson, that as a public figure you should always assume you’re in the vicinity of a live mic. Would Richt have made those comments if he’d known anyone other than Franklin was going to hear them? Probably not. But Richt was angered over the melee at the end of the game, and what he said was correct. No matter how many cheap shot chop blocks the Vandy players committed (and there were many), Shawn Williams mouthing off to the opposing coach after the game was dumb. And Richt’s description of Grantham’s post-game shenanigans (assuming that’s what he was talking about) is just an earthier way of saying what he said elsewhere: That’s not the Georgia way. As for the impact of Richt’s post-game comments, I doubt there’ll be much. The players and coaches involved already knew he was highly displeased. It’s simplistic to view all this and say Todd Grantham has his players’ backs and Richt doesn’t. Not only did Grantham’s tirade set a bad example for his players and embarrass UGA, it probably cost him the use of Williams in the first half of the Florida game. It’s very doubtful conference officials would have reviewed the tape and decided to suspend Williams for a play on which he wasn’t flagged during the game if the Franklin-Grantham showdown hadn’t occurred.
Jeremy Floyd writes: Very concerned that UGA hasn’t beaten a good team since Tech in ’09. Before that have to go back to 2008. Do you think this team really has what it takes? I just don’t see them beating both Florida and Auburn, but hopefully I’m wrong.
This team is fully capable of beating both Florida and Auburn, but it has yet to put together a complete game against lesser opponents and if that continues I’d say it’s bucking the odds to expect the Dogs to win both of those games. I’m hopeful they’ll rise to the occasion.
Craig Plank writes: Hey Bill, First of all I love reading your posts throughout the week and I love how honest you are with your feelings about the Dawgs. I live in Tennessee in the Nashville area and I am starting to get the feeling that most SEC fans are thinking the Dawgs are just gonna fall into the SEC championship and truly not deserve their chance. What’s your feelings about that?
I think if the Dogs make it to the SEC Championship game, they’ll certainly deserve to be there because they will probably have beaten Florida and Auburn and they should have beaten South Carolina. Now, how they’d match up against Alabama or LSU is not something I want to think about too much at this point.
Rontavius Smith writes: Hey Junkyard, I want to know why does [Mike] Bobo call run plays that send Carlton Thomas up the middle when he is a scat back? Wouldn’t it be reasonable to send him to space being that he has speed? The next question is do they believe they can get the offense to run on all cylinders when they play UF, because in my opinion I believe they have to score touchdowns instead of FGs to beat UF.
I’ve never understood trying to run the diminutive Thomas up the middle, considering Georgia’s offensive line, but fortunately there’s been much less of that this season. You’re right that Thomas can be very effective when he gets some space to work in. And I agree with you that attempting field goals (which are no longer a lock with a yippy Blair Walsh) is not going to get it done against the Gators. The two keys there are going to be whether Aaron Murray continues to improve at ball security and how healthy and effective Isaiah Crowell is.
Allen Kennedy writes: Bill, I heard that caller [on "Bulldog Hotline" about Georgia's red zone woes]. I have the same questions. Also, on our opening drive, we are 3rd & 5. We only need 6 yards and we throw a 30 yard pass!? A low percentage play! We have to settle for what used to be an automatic field goal attempt. And for some reason we keep calling low percentage plays on 3rd down. And another thing, why do we keep sending our 3’s & 4’s on special teams when other teams have their 1’s & 2’s out there? The reward for our 3rd stringers should be the privlege of wearing the “G,” not playing on special teams. And one last comment: I was glad to see Grantham take up for the boys after the game. At least somebody has their backs! Thanks Bill, I enjoy the blogs.
I don’t question Grantham supporting his players; I just question the manner in which he did it. As for the playcalling on third down, I agree with you completely. The Dogs seem to make it harder on themselves than it needs to be. And special teams are pretty much a disaster at UGA. Richt’s whole approach to that aspect of the game needs to be rethought.
Josh Cuevas writes: Bill, Once again, strong, even-handed analysis on your part. Two questions: Is there any team in college football right now, or that you can remember in the recent past, with a superior defensive backfield to the current Dogs? Between Boykin, Smith, Rambo, Williams, and Commings, we have not just five solid performers, but five star-quality All-SEC type players back there. I don’t recall a team having that much high quality depth in the defensive backfield. The Dogs defense is finally looking like the “D” of old, stopping the run up front (for the most part), wreaking some havoc on the opposing quarterbacks, and creating turnovers in the secondary. On offense, we’ve got a good quarterback, some receivers have emerged, Crowell has lived up to expectations when he can stay on the field, and the massive O-line has probably performed a little better than initially expected. But it all seems to come apart on offense in the second half. Is this a conditioning issue or is it a result of the opposing coaches making better halftime adjustments and essentially out-coaching our staff? If not for the second half meltdowns and horrific breakdowns on special teams, we could be a Top 10 caliber team right now. What’s causing this second half ineptitude and how should it be addressed?
Georgia’s defensive secondary is extremely talented, and certainly looks like it could be the best the Dogs have had since early in the Richt regime. The next few games will tell the tale. As for the offense in the second half, some games have been better than others, but generally I think it’s been skewed by Mike Bobo calling the games conservatively with a lead.
Harold A. Black ‘66 writes: [The Vanderbilt] game had the dumbest call I have seen in my 50 years of going to the Dawgs. We were at the game and I was stunned that the Dogs just didn’t snap the ball and either take a knee or run around. It was 4th down with 15 seconds on the clock and Vandy did not have a timeout. Snap the ball and the game is over. Instead they were going to kick and give Vandy and chance to run it back and win? Worse, give them an opportunity to block the punt? No way. Richt is too smart for that — right? Wrong. We were lucky that Vandy could not get a handle on the blocked punt or else they would have won. Also that first pass hit the receiver in the hands and we could have lost it there. How could Richt have been so out of it is beyond me.
I don’t know that taking a knee would have been the answer, since it would have given Vandy pretty good field position (though not as good as the blocked punt). But certainly the decision to switch punt formations during the time out was a poor one and the punt team did a horrendous job of executing (other than Drew Butler’s game-saving tackle). But there’s no rhyme or reason to Georgia’s approach to special teams play.
SSgt David Forston writes: Greetings Junkyard, I am currently deployed to Afghanistan and did not get to watch the Bulldogs play [against Vandy], but from what I am reading don’t sound like I missed too much. Like you, I hate when the Dawgs play like pure trash but I have to say I’ll take an ugly win (Vandy) over a pretty loss (S.C.) any day and at the end of the day a W is a W. I have a few questions for you going into the bye week and as the Dawgs get geared up for the greatest outdoor cocktail party. 1) What is happening with our special teams play? B. Walsh clearly has something wrong with him. Have you heard any word going around of maybe replacing him and during all of this is our special teams coach taking any heat? 2) Any news on Crowell and why he was set out for the first quarter? I think the kid has a ton of talent and I am looking foward to seeing him run the rock for a few more years. If he was out for trouble issues I hope CMR can get his head right and maybe this will be a wake up call for him. 3) Last but not least, do you think our D was finally out of gas or do you think Vandy opened up some weaknesses and holes in our D? I know that for the last few weeks the D has carried this team and I hope they were just worn down. As much as I dislike not having a UGA game on a Saturday I think this coming up week is much needed. Can’t wait for that Saturday in Jax to see them Dawgs keep this winning steak going. Take care Junkyard and GO DAWGS!
Georgia’s special teams play, which doesn’t have one overall coach, is a mess right now, but I don’t think there’s been any serious consideration to benching Walsh. The coaches apparently think he’s still the best option. They’ve never said exactly why Crowell was benched in the first quarter but there’ve been rumors involving him getting a bit mouthy with some staffer. Obviously Richt was trying to teach him a lesson. As for the defense, I think a combination of Vandy’s cut blocking and some sloppy play on the part of the Dogs resulted in the Commodores being able to run on Georgia better than expected. I’m hoping the run defense can get back on track after the off week. Thanks for reading and for your service, and stay safe!
Alan Powell writes: Why, why, why won’t Richt play Hutson Mason any? If something happens to Aaron Murray, playing experience will be most beneficial for both the team and Mason.
I agree it would be beneficial for Mason to get more real-game experience. The problem is that Georgia hasn’t been able to get far enough ahead of anyone to put in the backup quarterback. With a mere 5 point lead over Vandy, you didn’t really expect to see Mason coming in during the fourth quarter, did you?
I’ve gotten a lot of letters this week and since there’s no game Saturday, I’ll answer more of them then. So if you’ve got a question or issue you’d like to raise, send it to junkyardblawg@gmail.com.

Can’t be thinking of any other game right now, but the next. Bobo needs to pull his head out of his tail and be unpredictable with his play calling. Wow, what a diffrence a good OC would make on this team.

Harold A. Black ‘66,
The clock stops on a change of possession…which would have happened if they would have taken a knee, and it would be difficult for Drew Butler to run out 15 seconds.

Crowell is already a problem w/ his jawing at opponents during games. He is being handled very carefully already by coaching staff. I also get the feeling own players are already putting up w/ him. How many times have you seen anybody help him get up after play?

I think Richt handled the whole thing poorly. Even if he was accurate about Grantham and Williams’ behavior, you don’t throw your own people under the bus. You say, “I’m sorry coach. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll take care of it. Good game.” Grantham and Williams’s lack of class was followed by CMR’s. I know it was a heated moment, but he’s paid millions to handle heated moments. Otherwise, anybody could do his job.

CMR, more than likely regrets the way he responded to the coach at vandy….that said, WHO hasn’t misspoken when caught off guard by a situation that, at the time was lacking details? I’d be willing to bet that CMR has spoken to Shawn Williams and apologized for his words while pointing out that he doesn’t need to be running his mouth after the game…regardless the outcome of the game or the way it was played. Sadly, all this happened at the front end of a by-week and there will much written about this latest incident. The whole thing was played out poorly…by both sides. UGA needs to get focused on those Gators….otherwise, they’ll be donating another win down in Jacksonville!

I have a question for you, Bill. Why does Chip Towers keep making the events after the Vany game seem much worse than what they were? I saw the video, and it was hardly a melee, Geathers reactions was hardly a “punch”, and James Franklin was just as much to blame as Grantham or Williams (not condoning either of their actions). I usually like Mr. Towers articles, but he seemed to be in attack mode this week. I’m just sayin.

Both wanna remind the Dawgnation of what they bring! 3) Now that ‘Tree is back, Williams can rotate to his old spot..our depth now is pretty freaking good, is what I’m sayin’! We play the bottom 3 teams in the West, Florida has lost its first 2 QBs, Lattimore is out for the year and Shaw is still green (and they still have Arkansas to play), and Auburn lost half its team (and 85% of its talent) from a year ago (At least fairley isnt there to stab anyone this year).
Also, we might be very well capable of beatnig AU and UF, but they are also very capable of beating us.

Not many people truly know what CMR said on the tape, but from what it looks like he said, I am sure he regrets it now. But who hasn’t said things they regret in the heat of the moment? I am sure looking back now both players and coaches wish the ending of the game would have gone differently. Now the Dawgs just need to get ready and use their fire to pull together a complete 4 quarter game to beat the Gators. Anyone ever see the things Judas Muschamp yells out on the sidelines??!! I believe the Dawgs can win it. And regarding Auburn, I have no doubt the players who were there last year will forget that game. I am a former Vandy player. I will tell you personally and unbiasedly that UGA is well known as a trash talking, obnoxious team. They always get away with late hits and cheap shots that go uncalled and dismissed. I was born in Athens, I have friends that play and have played for UGA but that is how it is. While I did see the cheapshot a Vandy player committed, that is not characteristic so let’s not act like UGA is the victim here. Take this from somebody who has had their leg twisted under a pile vs UGA. I have the upmost respect for Coach Richt and Coach Franklin. But Shawn Williams needed to be addressed. Also lets not forget Williams open hand punched Vandy’s kicker Carey Spears if you check the game film. Anyways I wish the best of luck moving forward to both teams and most of all hope they continue clean football.

I understand how everyone is concerned about how they didn’t run out the clock with 15 seconds remaining. With all the problems with special teams, the safest bet would be punting the ball. The kicker took way too much time in kicking that ball. There’s no way I would trust them trying to run around, burning time off the clock, inside the 20-30 yard line, with 15 seconds, on 4th down. The odds were in favor to just punt at that point. If they were able to block a punt, imagine what could have happened with a punter trying to run around with the ball….Let’s just say it was the lesser of 2 evils.

Right or wrong, I do believe that Grantham probably has his players’ backs. At work, I have talked with guys who have played sports in high school. Time and time again, each one tells me they would love to play for a coach like Grantham. They don’t look at it as being right or wrong. They find it inspiring and want to play for someone who will stick up for their players. Personally, I think Grantham was wrong in what he did and how he did it. But the players out on the field view it differently. Coach Richt calling Shawn Williams a “dumb ass” will most likely cause problems in the locker room.

I don’t understand the constant harping on CMB and running Thomas (or Samuel IV or Crowell) up the middle. If you have the largest O line in the Free World, a run up the middle is standard Power I football. But, 1. the line has to block and create a seam; 2. the runner has to find that seam…or 3. the runner gets behind a blocker and makes yards. Some act like that’s the only play the Dawgs run. How ’bout the overthrown balls or the dropped passes? They didn’t work either. Why harp on the run up the middle?
It seems useless to keep speculating over why Crowell was held out the first quarter at Vandy. Could simply have been as stated, that his injured wrist is a liability for securing the ball. Or, as speculated, a little slap on the wrist for discipline reasons. They’ve kept it within the family for a reason. Actually, I applaud that; as opposed to airing every little indiscretion. Yes, inquiring minds want to know. But some things are best kept private between coach and player. When that happens, it’s useless to speculate because we’ll probably never know.
I hope this is the last article about the Vandy game. We’ve got to get ready for Flawduh. Go Dawgs! Whip up on the Gators!
Speaking of the Gators, is Rainey a 7th year senior or what? Seems like he’s played for them for …forever. Same with Demps.

The reason that teams (not just Georgia) often attempt passes that are longer than the distance needed for the first down is because the defense knows that they only need 6 yards, therefore making every attempt to take away the 6 yard pass. This gives the opportunity to take advantage of some single coverage deeper down the field. Ultimately, the reason that the ball was thrown 30 yards on 3rd and 5 is because Aaron Murray tried to take what the defense gave him. Execution was the problem!

Wasnt Mark Richt the first person to say that he made some inappropriate comments during and after te game? I think he said that in his initial post game news conference. So now we’re chastising him further for something he’d already admitted to BEFORE there was any video evidence of it? Seems kinda silly and amateurish to me.
Plus his comments, tho they contained profanity, were not Making the situation worse, they were actually diffusing the situation by letting a hot-headed coach know how serious Mark took what had happened.

READ THE RULE BOOK. I did not see a single chop block in the VU/UGA game. There are cut blocks, yes. Those are LEGAL. Indeed, Auburn’s backfield makes a living with those. Chop blocks involve TWO offensive players and ONE defensive player. Again, I saw none of those. Get your facts straight.

Listen DA fans. There is a difference in chop block and cut blocks. Cut blocks unfortuneately are legal.
Chop blocks are illegal. So if you want to say Vandy had it coming, make sure you are listing chop blocks. The only problem with that is, the officials didn’t see or call any chop blocks.
Blame Vandy like you usually do, but at least know what is legal and what is not.

Georgia AND Richt are not the same as the first 5 or 6 years when he first arrived. I have to assume two things. The league has gotten a lot better and Mark has gotten wealthy and complacent. Before people jump me, No, it has nothing to do with Christianity, please. Mark, as a coach, is really a manager also, just like running any business, Mark has made some bad decisions. Good coach’s adapt with new Assistants or schemes. No greater example is Clemson this year with the new OC Dabo brought in. Their offense is day and night vs last year. Having a new stud freshman RB has helped them…………..but hello, we have one also. We still have Bobo and that old faded FSU playbook. You change and improve………Or you get fired…..

Successful head coaches stay as head coaches because they truely believe in excelling in special teams play. Its a major factor in winning programs. W/GA and CMR they seem to throw caution to the wind in their approach to special teams. They hope for the best with the coach(es) assigned this apparent extra duty. Its like mending something w/baling wire and chewing gum and shows on the field. They get caught off guard when defending other teams gimmick plays but have none of their own. They don’t have a clue what to do as was apparent when CMR did not call a time out at Vandy on the fake punt. I am sure half the TV audience saw that coming. Special teams play almost cost us the game and did to some degree vs SC.
Until Richt realizes that good special teams play could help win one or two games a year GA will suffer the consequences most likely the short end of the stick. Hire a special teams coach w/proven record as the benefits just might save a few coaching jobs at GA.

You are exactly rigth about Mason, Bill. If Bobo keeps his foot on the gas and the lead is increased then Mason can get some snaps. However, if the games are close Mason isn’t going to get playing time. Outside of LSU I can’t think of any team in the country that wouldn’t be screwed if their starting QB was lost to injury so I don’t think it’s that big of a deal to get Mason snaps. However, if Lemay is deemed as the next in line after Murray they’ve got to get him some snaps the next two years.

The irony for all of the Richt Haters is that the three 4 SEC teams we beat all have new coaches and yet you keep posting how awful our wins are. So fire I coach to end up like the teams we beat? There is no logic in your argument. IF we beat (big IF) Florida are you going to call it another weak win. Guess what, they have a new coach. So far the only team with new coach doing any good is Bama and no one is going to call Saban a new coach. (Gene C doesn’t count. When you snag the one player in the world who can get a first down on 3rd and 10 everytime by running it himself agains every SEC defender, that is an anomally, and their is the issue of Newtons stealing, cheating in school, and dad asking for money – NCAA gave Auburn a freebee with an *. He is gone and it shows) You have two Successful coaches left in the SEC. Saban and Les. I wouldn’t trade Mark for les or any other SEC coach except SAban and that is not going to happen. SO SHUT UP!

Bill, this is one long time Dawg who agrees with you WHOLEHEARTEDLY re: the post game brouhaha. Franklin, Grantham, Williams all displayed unprofessional behavior. Coach Richt was the grown up on the field, and everyone knew it. In an ideal world, he’d have told Coach F “okay, thanks for telling me, I’ll look into it,” but I think many people are overlooking the strong likelihood that Richt was already miffed with Williams and Grantham–he was on the field and close enough to the melee to have an idea what was going on. He clearly takes pride in the “G” and in having a reputation for playing clean, so he may have had his own “heat of the moment” moment when he thought others were dishonoring the G by acting like punks. Let’s leave yelling, screaming, profanity laced behavior to Vandy, Florida, Auburn, etc. That should NOT be the Georgia way.

@ga gator,
I’m just ready for all this to just go away. I’m sure Richt does as well.
For everyone that’s saying that he sold his coach and player out: The best thing he could have done was to diffuse the situation as quickly as possible. That was a “managemnet moment”, meaning you manage that particualr situation because at that point, we were the only ones with anything to lose. Sometimes you say things that you wish you hadn’t said and he will have to manage that as well; if indeed, that’s what he said. I think he knew that we were going to lose the public relations contest in this one. Just placate the guy and let him and his team go away and deal with it later. Trust me, it works, I tell my wife she’s right all the time (doesn’t mean that I believes she’s right) just so I can end the discussion. You cannot reason with an emotional person and Franklin even himself admitted to the same, but not much else. Vandy is playing Army their next game and they are not in contention for the east. It’s time to play football. We were in a whole lot worse situation this time last year as far as win/losses. Am I happy with how we’ve won the games? No! Am I happy that we’ve won those games? Yes!! Guys, it could be a lot worse sort, of like last year. That’s what we should be focused on. Get through this season and accomplish more than we did last year. Let the powers to be decide if changes need to be made to the staff. I’m going to support this staf, the next staff, and the one after that one too.

Shawn Williams is the same player whose family lost everything in a fire a little over a year ago. I sincerely hope he doesn’t read or give a crap about a bunch of bloggers making assumptions about his entire life and personality based on a few video clips where he wasn’t at his best behavior.
I know it’s not hoops season, but why not hammer Donovan at UF for putting his two players back on the team that broke into a car in St. Augustine this summer and then went on to talk a lot worse than field trash all caught on the police car tape, not assumed, plain as can be on tape. Their entire suspension time was served in the offseason. I can give you at least 15 examples right now of SEC football and basketball players at every school messing up, most much worse than Shawn Williams has ever thought about.
People seem to live in a bubble where they think that UGA must be soooo awful because they only follow local news that sensationalizes any little bit of bad news there. Try following the local news of just the rest of the SEC, if not the nation, and UGA will look squeaky clean compared to most.
It is also just downright stupid to paint an entire program as dirty or bad every time one or 2 players mess up while the other 120+ on the roster don’t. Frankly, they have a lot better percentage of good behavior than bloggers and reporters do.

Seen the videos and there are still many unanswered questions. Why is the assumption that Franklin is being truthful? He apparently approved, and possibly directed, a late clip on a UGA player. Dawg83 is right, Bill does seem to go out of his way to post the negative – even when he’s ‘just’ including what ‘other’ fans send in. And it’s in recognition of this that I keep asking him if he’s on Don Leeburn’s payroll or something. Leeburn is a ‘well-healed’, former player, member of the Board (of something or other that has to do with athletics), ‘roommate’ to Suzanne Yocklan (sp?), purveyor of spirits out of Columbus or somewhere and an ardent, and open critic of Mark Richt. Don’t know what it is other than he, Leeburn, seems to have ‘devolved’ into one of those 1 percenters who’s arrogance and money have convinced him that what he wants and what he says, ought to go…you know, our Bobby Louder.
Now Bill if you don’t believe that you’re in the Leeburn camp (I don’t mean his money, I mean his sentiments), say so. Then we’ll know that you’re just another one of those, so-called, Dog fans that thinks criticism of the current regime is healthy for the program, particularly if it’ll result in getting Richt run off or hounded enough to convince him that it’s not worth the effort to keep this bunch of peckerwoods happy. Is that who you are Bill? Come on…admit it…otherwise become part of the solution, not part of the problem.

My take on the game: Florida will likely win if Brantley can take the field and be effective. Otherwise, its GA’s game. The Gator offense is downright anemic at present with our promising but true-freshment QB’s. **The Gators have seen the end zone exactly twice in the last 3 games.**
It’s up to Georgia to take the game and make it theirs. This is the Florida you want to play (young and hurt) and a window where you can make Atlanta a reality. God help you against Bama or LSU, though.

If you idiots think CMR is so dumb not to know that the mics were around then you really have are ignorant and are looking for any excuse to have him fired. To the CMR haters, he cannot do anything right and any percieved misstep is blown way out of porportion. How many times has he done something like this in his tenure?? I can’t recall one time. If anything I would bet good money he knows exactly what he is doing. Plus the game was poorly played because these kids have been humping it for 6 weeks w/o a break and see the bye week and Fla ahead. How do you quantify this claim, since this blog is a very small sampling of UGA fans? There are a lot of fans outside the state of Ga., just like FL fans are all over the place.
I normally ignore your post, because I know where they’re going. I’m not a UGA grad, but I am a fan and I do not consider myself irrational, nor do the Marines that I’m charged with leading. I’m not sure if you believe some of the things that you say. Quoting Bill here “I don’t know that taking a knee would have been the answer, since it would have given Vandy pretty good field position (though not as good as the blocked punt). ”
South Carolina faced a similar situation, although with 7 seconds left. Spurrier had Shaw run with the ball to the end zone, burning seconds until he ran out the back for a game-ending safety. In Georgia’s situation, more time might have been run off the clock, but taking a safety might have left a few seconds on the clock. The result, free kick from the 20 yard line, and with Butler punting, Vanderbilt would not have had good field position to run 1 play.

we had one chance to prove that we were a quality SEC team, and that was the SC game. We blew it. WE DOMINATED on offense and defense and STILL gave it to them with turnovers, penalties and special teams errors. WAKE UP! These are all signs that point to a poorly disciplined team with weak leadership holding the reins. Being angry at a HC for dumping games to weaker competition is not anit-UGA sentiment. It is lobbying for what this team and the alumni and fan support deserve. SECOND RICHEST TEAM IN FBS FOOTBALL and have nothing to show but a couple of SEC championships from half a decade ago and a few Sugarbowl wins. And NO, that does not mean they are dumb, redneck or whatever BS name you want to call them. There are cutoff numbers for freshman enrollment and transfers. Most go to school elsewhere and can still have an allegiance towards UGA. Is that against any rules you want to impose?
Most large state schools have more fans than living alumni base….again, against any rules?
People may be proud it’s their flagship school of their home state. or their dad, mom, sons, or daughters went there, or whatever reason. Maybe another generation in their family will aspire to go to school there. If the numbers allowed, many more of the fans, you unjustly abuse, would have attended.
So take your smugness elsewhere. At least UGA has fans and consistently sell out their large stadium. You can remain jealous of their passion and allegiance.

Marc Richt should be ashamed of what he said to James Franklin, even if no one has heard it. We have a saying in the military, that is “I’ll come down hard on my troops in private, but will never say a bad thing about him in public.” This applies here. Richt can be upset if he wants, and can come down hards on williams in the locker room. But he is required as the head coach to stick up for his players, even when they do something wrong. This will most definately hurt morale of the team, with them knowing that richt does not support them in the bad times the saem as the good. I have to say I was not on the “Fire Richt” bandwagon, but now, i believe we need a new coach.

Wow. more of those student that apply to UGA could get in if you didn’t have to give 75% special admits for all the football players. “Many schools routinely used a special admissions process to admit athletes who did not meet the normal entrance requirements. More than half of scholarship athletes at the University of Georgia, the University of Wisconsin, Clemson University, UCLA, Rutgers University, Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University were special admits. . . At Georgia, for instance, 73.5 percent of athletes were special admits compared with 6.6 percent of the student body as a whole.”

Spurrier got it right when he played Shaw a lot instead of Garcia. The reason Murray has made so many mistakes is because CMR and Bobo did not let him Quarterback the last 6 games of 2009 when his shoulder was healed. Bobo and CMR is making the same mistake now in not letting Mason play. I can guarantee Mason wouldn’t have single handily lost the South Carolina game like Murray’s mistakes did. But we want know unless Mason is allowed to play.
A lot of people want to minimize our win over Vanderbilt but they have a very good defense and they found a new starting Quarterback in Rodgers because they played him. We dominated the first half because the other Quarterback was not very good and that’s who we had our scout team copy in practice to get us ready for the game. The reason Rodgers was so good was because we had not practiced against his style any and the defense was not ready for that big of change.
Bottom line is CMR needs to find Mason more playing time .

@Kerryb,
He should have walked up to Franklin and told him, “you seem to have a problem with one of my players but I have a problem with yours cheap shotting all night.”
That wouldn’t have calmed the situation at all. It probably would have led to a brawl, but I do understand the point you’re trying to make though. I think he wishes he hadn’t used those words and he will have to deal with that as well. I still didn’t hear those words and I’ve listened to that video quite a few times.

Bill why don’t all of you dumb *** sports writers take a page from the days that Furman Bisher and Gene Asher wrote sports articles for all Ga High School and College sports. You never heard them write negative articles about players and coaches from our great peach state. I grew up, and played all sports at Chamblee High School in the Fifties, and went on and played College Football and Baseball. I still have many of the articles they wrote in scrap books. Looking through them I can find no articles where the bashed the coaches at Tech or Georgia as all our present media writers of sports do. The best thing You, Bradly ,and Schultz can do is once you get the facts report it , and let a dead Dog or Yellow Jacket lie. I dealt with the media for forty years as a High school coach and never experienced any of the negativism that you guys bring to the game. All you do is create situations for the dumb *** bloggers to get on and feel proud that they can also cut programs or coaches they don’t like to the bone with a dull knife. I do sometimes like reading your articles when they are positive. I love Georgia and know the coaching staff personally, These people that have never played the game or coached anything but church league ball know very little about the game and the pressure all coaches endure 365 days out of the year.

Also, I would bet that McGarity has handled all the coaches internally with this one. I refuse to believe that as some of you put it that CMR is “spineless”, etc…. I don’t have a problem with what Richt said to Franklin. He was dead-on right. We don’t need that kind of trashy play and behavior from our players or our coaches. I’m also tired of hearing denials as to what was said by Coach Richt. The AJC bloggers didn’t make up that transcript, it came from the same Nashville news reporters who recorded the conversation. They’re professionals and they understand libel and slander laws.
We need to put this behind us. Denials and excuses only give this story a longer lifespan. Better to just admit it when you screw up and try to do better in the future.

1. What exactly is the reason you feel the University of Georgia owes you ANYTHING? “and the alumni and fan support deserve” Do you feel like the alumni and fans of the University of Indiana deserve a national champion football team? Is it the same for fans and alumni of every university with a football team? If so then who is it that looses when all of these people get what they so righteously deserve?
2. What is it with yours and many others on the blog fascination with Erk Russell? I was actually in school when Erk Russell was there. I was there when Kentucky beat us 33-0 in front of Prince Charles. I was there when UVA beat us 44-0 for Homecoming. I was either there or in close proximity to all those years of 7-4 and 8-3 that get coaches fired now days. Without Hershel Walker Vince was just another Ray Goff. Until he left for Georgia Southern Erk Russell was just another coach from the old days that yelled and screamed and came up with catchy phrases to motivate his team. List for me his accomplishments that cause you to put him in such high regard.

William, it is NOT simplistic to view all this and say Todd Grantham has his players’ backs and Richt doesn’t; it is factual. I could possibly give Richt a pass if he had made his comment after reviewing film and talking to witnesses but his comment to the Vandy coach was simply to say “I am better than what you are claiming happened- I am a better person than that.”
Richt can ream Williams and Grantham behind closed doors but he broke the protocol- I have lost a lot of respect for him. The defense will run through brick walls for Grantham; Richt, maybe not so much.
And for the record, Geathers got screwed.

1. Downing the ball was a mistake.
2. The block on Geathers was questionable at best. The play was not over when the block was made. Although the Vandy player was approaching from behind, he clearly had his head and shoulders in front of Geathers’ leg when he made contact. It looked like a legal cut block to me.

I played sports until I was 21 and on every team a lot of the team talked just like Grantham. To make the young men into Saints and to make in sound like they were damaged or the league was hurt because of Grantham’s tirade is crazy. These are 18 to 24 year old young men and half of them can and do drink legally. The player forgot about what happened the minute it happened because it wasn’t that big of a deal. THE ONLY THING THE DEFENSE WILL REMEMBER IS HOW GRANTHAM HAD THEIR BACK’S UNCONDITIONALLY.

Your 3:33 comment was spot on. But I put most of that out coached on Bobo with CMR not intervening enough. The biggest reason that I have been calling for Bobo to be replaced as coordinator for two years now is because he is not capable of adjusting during a game to anything that our offense is having problems with and more than not he adjust away from things that are working.

Delbert D………..Thanks for your last post I think. LOL
Wow. more of those student that apply to UGA could get in if you didn’t have to give 75% special admits for all the football players.
—————–
You want to talk about beating a dead horse .. Anyway, the first line in this doesn’t even make sense. Even if they didn’t have special admits, they would still admit athletes as a scholarship offered group so the number of total new enrollees would never change. Second, EVERY school that has even a remotely competitive football program has special admits and you just mentioned a few in the post (the one with the paragraph that has been posted in here verbatim a dozen times before). Among those schools mentioned with UGA are good football schools and bad ones. Good academic schools and not as good. It’s all the same. GT would have more too but none of the better athletes want to play there.

That is absolute nonsense. You pretend to know all about a grand scheme on the part of Vandy to injure a Georgia football player. That wasn’t even a dirty block. It would have never been flagged if it hadn’t been followed by a punch from the Geathers.
This is the dirty block that caused all of the trouble, and you try to pretend that it didn’t even happen.

I don’t think it was about just beating Vandy, I think it was more of the fact that the way Vandy was trying to win with the cheap shots and low blocks that made the players get stupid after the game. Just my opinion.
I am more upset that CMR even entertained the thought of letting that little whiny punk Franklin even speak his peace. He goes after a 20 year old first which that should have never happened. It should be coach to coach only. Let the coaches handle the players. Which by the way, apparently Franklins version of handling his players is sending a hit man in to take down UGA’s players in a cowardly way but then telling CMR, “that’s not how we play”. Pansy Franklin will get his.

Monday morning QB’s still hanging Grantham and Williams out to dry. Show me Williams even speaking to Franklin. Ask FSS for raw tape, the camera pointed on the field never moved they cut to a field hand held camera on Rambo. The video shows Williams 15 to 20 yards away from Franklin with his back to him and Franklin is running after him. Grantham was just minding his own business walking across the field. Grantham has to turn around, including numerous UGA players, to see whom Franklin is pointing at.
The real point is, none of us know what was really said between Franklin and Grantham with the exception of the Vandy Police Officer, and we know whom he’ll back, and the kid in the blue shirt with the camera who is supposedly with Scout.com. The kid stated that Franklin told Grantham to F off and that started the whole deal.
I have learned that it is usually the little guy that starts it, the big guy finishes it, and the big guy gets in trouble.
Very disappointed with Richt. He should have seen the cameras and told Franklin he would get back to him after he had spoken to the parties involved. Richt was set up by FSS and Franklin.
It’s funny that even after Richt apologized to Franklin, Franklin waited for another UGA assistant to spill the same story exactly word for word, he had just told Richt. Franklin was looking for whomever he could find in red to keep this stirred up.
Damage done now let’s take our frustrations out on FLA!

the REAL PHIL-
Sorry it took so long to get back to you, I’m working. I do feel like the administration owes something to a fanbase who has CONSISTENTLY packed the Stadium for over ten years, has purchased enough merchandise to make us the second best athletic brand in College, and has given our Coaches and their assistants bloated salaries that are not consistent with the product that they have put on the field the last four years.
As far as Erk was concerned, I have a fantastic article that I wrote about Erk, and it stems from his approach, character, loyalty and ability to motivate teams that were NOT loaded with “4 and 5 star recruits” like they are now. His teams in those days had under-sized and under appreciated defensive player and he almost never failed to get them up for the big games. I followed his career at GSU as well, and I don’t think there is a single coach in the country that can claim that he took a group of Div-II athletes who hadn’t had a football team in over 40YEARS and took them to 3 NC’s in ten years. That is just sick. Also, he was an avid supporter of not only the school, students, fans, student athletes, and coaching staff, but also supported life changing values like ethical behavior, a moral life style, and let those he mentored know that there was more to life than winning football games. THAT is a great man. Where do your low standards stem from Phil?

listen guys, I agree with a lot of these comments, but think about this. UGA Head man coach “R” seems to be trying to save everbody job but it may cost him his. I love all the UGA coachs and i am happy what coach “G” did. It about time some one looked pased the politic and remembered what he needed to do in this event. The Vandy coach “F” looked like a little girl on the play ground telling on someone. He should have ignored player “W” and let it go. I also think he did a lot of dammage to “UV” with his child like actions. “UV” is to upper crust to put up with that. Be careful Coach “F” your seat may get hot.

oops…
Bill, I’ve mentioned this to several, with no one having any more of a clue than I.
Why, when we only needed to run out the clock, 1:15 or so, the last series, were we trying to get Samuel outside? Not only is he a bruising back, gaining five yards on the only play up the gut in that series, but he was limping the entire game! Several times we tried, throughout the game, to get him outside and it lost yardage every time, I believe. I just don’t get Bobo. Thomas up the middle, and Samuel on the sweep. And a substitution infraction on the last series? Really? How many of those do we average during the last five years? We just don’t seem to have the details figured out, seven games into the season, that we should have and haven’t had for years.
I am a huge CMR fan, but I think that our lack of ability to put teams away over the last few years, and the continual lack of focus that causes things like twelve men in the huddle on a first and ten when you have to have a first down to put a game away, points to a change being required. Maybe Richt, maybe Bobo, maybe some other assistants. Something just is not well tuned here in Athens

Jose Cuevas,
I think you would be hard pressed to find any coach or writer that thinks GA has the best defensive backfield in the SEC. At BEST, I think they could be listed 3rd. I don’t think it’s close when comparing them to the secondaries of Bama or LSU.

Maybe it’s just me but there is no way I can tell what Coach Richt said. Seemed like he was just trying to get rid of Coach Franklin and move on to the locker room.
As for Coach Grantham, I don’t have a problem with a coach defending his players but he was over the top.
Can this BS end already? No one was hurt, the SEC has addressed it. MOVE ON!

Hope what was reported that Richt said is true. Ga. players, as soon as the game was over were acting as if we won the SEC championship. If the Ga. players were in fact talking smack to the vandy sidelines during the game, it would not surprise me at all. The current players are highly recruited players that have no clue what realty is as they have been treated as if they were special since they were 10 years old. Very embarased after the game. I have no idea what was actually said during or after the game. That being stated, our players should have ran to the locker room with their tail between their legs with the performance they displayed. Get ready for another loss to the gaytors, we will find a way to lose. Hope i’m wrong!

Out of curiosity I checked the Dawgs 2011 Media Guide to see who has/is the special teams coach. Well, there isn’t one with that primary duty and it certainly shows on the field. How can you not have a designated special teams coach not on (your) staff? Add another nail to the coffin.

From my experience in HS, if you don’t have a designated coach to fill that position, it is usually the assistant with the least responsibilities. That probably means Garner. He’s had the closest interaction with Martinez, Fabris, and Belin when they were the ST coaches.

Bill King and Dawg Nation is still crying about Vandy’s alleged cut blocking, which by the way is legal? I never heard a word about it from Alabama, which played Vandy the week before and held then to 41 yards rushing. I guess Vandy put it in the game plan for Georgia and that’s why they piled up 200 yards rushing.

Cutblocking is illegal in the NFL b/c it is extremely dangerous…you’re going against the grain right at the patella area of a DL who is already driving with post-power. That said, it’s usually pretty easy to counter as long as you don’t bullrush every play (ps-that’s the only move our line seems to have). If they taught these guys to swim, punch, spin and feign to the inside and used more stunts on the line, it would be a non-factor. Garner is almost as predictable as Bobo.

Of course, we play a single-gap defense where the only real responsibility of those linemen is to hold a point(occupy blockers) and collapse the pocket so that it forces a runningback into a pile of mush or sends him bouncing outside into the waiting arms of a linebacker. It’s pretty much the simplest line play to script and minimizes their AOR. It is probably due to the fact that these guys havent worked in the system long enough for a two-gap responsibility (see Florida’s problems vs Bama/LSU)

Good point D. My issue is this: teams have used these quick tricks for years and years. It is a SIMPLE adjustment…one that could made in a team or commercial timeout. The fact remains, however, that we do a very poor job at half making adjustments and anticipating adjustments. i think the best half-time adj i’ve seen all season long was C. Petersen changing to a trip set at half to keep our corners from jamming their receivers in the Boise Game. CTG should have switched to a zone blitz in a 3-5-3, stacking on the side of the trips set to slow down the crossing routes. Fail again.

“Blocking Below the Waist
The committee had an extensive discussion about blocking below the waist. There is general agreement that the current rule is overly cumbersome and complicated. This will be considered at the next committee meeting in 2011.”

It will probably become a three-man rotation in the second half. Garrison will get the nod at end, Geathers will become the lead a Nose, Tyson will rotate at end/nose, and Jenkins will take the second string snaps. That’s how it looks to shape up. Thornton will probably rotate between nose/end depending on the look (3-4 true base is only about 30% of our plays, the rest are a hybrid 4-3 where they can use to undersized tackles).

DAWG tired. Sorry it took so long to get back to you. I have to work. Thanks for the response, such as it was. As is usually the case with someone who tries to spin opinion as fact, you didn’t answer the questions I ask you. You only affirmed that indeed you DID believe the University of Georgia fans something. In your case they owe you a football team that wins in a way and amount that appeases what ever your desires are. You mentioned that it was because fans had packed the stadium for 10 years. I assure you that stadium has been packed for most of 40 years and that is why seating has continued to expand. But you never mentioned what YOU had done so that YOU feel that the University owes it to YOU to grant your wish.
What you didn’t answer is if every football fan in the nation deserves the same thing you do as a fan of the University of Georgia, if their chosen institution OWES them the same thing that you seem to feel the University of Georgia owes YOU. And if that is the case, how do we wind up the season with every team in contention for the national championship? Just give me logical answers to those questions and I will never say another word about any one that believes the University OWES them to be a fan of am undefeated team every year. Or OWES them anything, a parking place, a place to pee, what ever it is you thing the school OWES you just because you bought a shirt if you’re just a fan. If you’re an alumni they gave you an education. That’s what you paid for.
As far as Erk Russell is concerned, I find it almost impossible to believe you wrote a fantastic article about anything. What you may have written was an opinion piece that is slanted to support some opinion of yours that you believe to be fantastic and is based on the same thing that word is….fantasy. If this were the scenario Erk Russell were coaching THIS YEAR and YOU dear sir, were a fan, the UGA was on it’s way to it’s typical 7-4 or 8-3 record that occurred during his tenor as DC. UK beats us 33-0. UVA beats us 44-0 for homecoming. YOU Mr. Dawgtired would be filling up these blogs with your illogical rants on how he has to go, how Dooley and his staff are idiots, how you can’t understand why Dooley insists on running the veer in the red zone. That is EXACTLY what YOU and those like you would be doing. The absolute last thing on your mind would be his character, approach, loyalty, and ability to motivate his teams. You wouldn’t care if Catholics had medals around their necks with his likeness. Those blow outs and 7-4 and he’d be scum to you.
I was there. I know. Coach Russell was every bit as in your face and foul as Coach Grantham is today. Back then that’s how people thought coaches were supposed to be. Players would go through 4 years of college and never even have a single conversation over that time with Dooley. Coach Russell coined the term GATA, an acronym whose last word seems to be heresy because some Nashville TV station purports that Coach Richt used it. Yet you bash Coach Richt his character and tell me Coach Russell had enough character that you are able to over look the actual performance of his teams. There are better examples about how life is more than football being set in Athens now in one night while everyone is asleep than the entire Dooley/Russell era. If you hold that point so dear, it seems to me that you would understand that. Where did your low standards come from?

Okay, Phil. First of all, I have been attending UGA games since I was 8. My granddad played at Clemson, and my Uncle played at Tech and BOTH took me to games b/c it was the team that I LOVE having grown up about 25 miles S.E. of Athens off of the 78. It isn’t some arbitrary notion I have about “A National Championship” because I never once even mentioned those words. What I do expect, is that when coaches say things like, “We win the east every other year and the SEC every 3 years” that they will deliver something better than a 8-5, 6-7, and now 5-2 football team on the field when we are playing a significantly easier schedule. I have paid for home game tix on leave back when I come back to Snellville (went to the Chick-fil-a game in ‘06 and the Auburn game in ‘07 and the Tennessee game last year) and went to about 25+ from the time I was 8 until I joined the Corps in 02. I have paid for friends and family member to attend games while I was deployed and having been waiting nearly 10 YEARS to use my G.I. Bill to go back to Athens to get a degree in Education (focus in History/Classics). I have so much UGA merchadise you could fill storage unit with it. No, I don’t think we should win the NCG every year Phil, but it would be nice not to be thought of as a complete JOKE. Our coaching staff can’t seem to put our players in a position where winning games and being competitive or at the very least classy and discipline is a priority. I hope you got your chuckles trying to flame me on this board, b/c frankly I don’t feel entitled to anything more than my opinion. You should really check yourself next time.

Actually, you were very selective yet again phil. The comment about the swim, punch, spin and feign is talking about the lack of finesse moves that our line displays. If they know how to SWIM over a force to the outside, SPIN around a shuffle step in pass protection, USE THEIR HANDS to keep from getting jammed up and locked then they won’t just be holding on the point (they will be PRESSURING THE PASSER) and the cutblock is useless . A spin is actually extremely effective against a cut-block, because while you’re on your belly falling forward, the only thing you can do is grab a shoe lace. And thats called holding.

I thought CMR’s response was great. I’m surprised he didn’t start laughing at Vandy’s coach. What is he a 12 year old school girl? If he can’t handle Shawn Williams talking smack after a loss… Then this whole media storm circling him and his pathetic actions must be driving him insane. He needs thicker skin.
And it’s funny that people are shocked that Richt says curse words and talks about his players that way. Listening to to stupid fans complain about Richt is hilarious. If he sticks up for the players… he’s coddling them. If he attacks them publicly… he’s throwing them under the bus. No matter what he does, it’s going to be wrong to the “fans” on message boards.
Richt handled the event perfectly. He brushed off the opposing coach as quickly as he could and walked off the field. Who handled it wrong? Vandy’s coach. He apparently has the thinnest skin of any SEC coach in decades. And Grantham? Sure, could have done better. But come on. He was just responding to a moron who’s upset that a player on another team dared tell him he lost the game.
Without the media needing something to talk about, this is a non story and one that the Vandy coach everyone forgets about. This is on the level of Van Gundy’s “I’m a man… I’m 40!”
Richt did well in just blowing him off as politely as possible and probably thought… “really? better get used to opposing players talking smack after beating your team… you’re at Vandy.”

Georgia Tech had the nation’s best average SAT score for football players, 1028 of a possible 1600, and best average high school GPA, 3.39 of a possible 4.0.
Many schools routinely used a special admissions process to admit athletes who did not meet the normal entrance requirements. More than half of scholarship athletes at the University of Georgia, the University of Wisconsin, Clemson University, UCLA, Rutgers University, Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University were special admits. . . At Georgia, for instance, 74 percent of athletes were special admits compared with 7 percent of the student body as a whole.

Hindsight is usually 20/20, and there are usually several approaches to successfully solve a hostile situation. Problem is you don’t have time to contemplate a reaction, good leadership just comes natural. Why do you think good leaders are in such short supply? You never crucify your people in public without first finding out all the facts. When in doubt, no comment is always the best avenue. Perhaps if Richt could control his language, and be a better example to these young men, then perhaps, they wouldn’t do the kind of things that get them suspended.

I think the reason Coach Richt has not beat a ranked team, is because pressure reveals character.
In the big games, Coach Richt’s team falter.
this lack of character is seen is so many ways:
penalties, turnovers, faltering against tougher teams, arrests, suspensions, and so on.
UGA has a MORAL problem.
This is due to LEADERSHIP.
And that’s why the team is 2-8 in UF-UGA rivalry game.
Pressure reveals character.

GreenDawg, what most people don’t understand is that Richt isn’t an effective leader. He’s in a crisis mode at this point, and is at “best” inconsistent at sending his message. Unfortunately, I agree with that assessment. Until Coach Richt cleans up his own heart, this team will be rudderless. I do not like the overall DIRECTION of the program. I knew this season would REVEAL Coach Richt’s TRUE SELF more than any other, because it followed a 6-7 year. And what I’ve seen so far, unfortunately, confirms my fears. I was hopeful Coach Richt had addressed this, as penalties, and arrests declined quite a bit, but if you look at the way Coach Richt has RESPONDED to PRESSURE, like the Vanderbilt game, and storming the field to break rules on purpose against Florida, it says a LOT about the MORAL COMPASS of this team. This team lacks courage, lacks resiliency, and that reflects poorly, and squarely on Coach Richt. Coach Grantham, Coach Richt’s choice for his top assistant, with his choking signs, and cursing, is also revealing a complete lack of MORAL COMPASS. I fear what will continue to happen ion the rest of the schedule as the pressure ramps up, is more of the same from Coach Richt. I expect the character issues to get worse.

I don’t think that is what Richt said after listening to this numerous times. If it is true those were not his words, the person, Raegan Mabry should have to publicly apologize, but I think UGA should sue her/him, as well as the AJC. This has caused much damage to Richt’s public image. Has Franklin verified that Richt actually said that, and how in the world could the tv station say, without a doubt, those were Richt’s words? If it turns out he did not say all that, you sorry AJC guys are in a pile of poop. Richt should support Grantham, not sorry Franklin, the hot head.

Do not even begin to talk with Wrath. He is what is known as a “False Prophet” or in our layman’s terms a “Troll”. He is using cherrypicked lines from the bible in order to support a facetious argument I.E.-Richt is a hypocrite who hides behind religion. The real story is “judge not lest ye be judged” and “let him who is without sin cast the first stone” and “before pointing out the splinter in another’s eye, first remove the plank from your own”. We are all sinners and I cuss up a storm when I’m talking to my Marines or in a locker room. I cannot condemn anyone who does. I’ve done some pretty bad things in my life, but I accept Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour and I know that there is not a single thing I can do in order to earn my own way into Heaven. I also forgive others who transgress against me and rebuke those without knowledge. Wrath, you should be careful, because you are boardering on heresy.

I’ve said it 50 times and I will say it once more. This team needs a position coach whose sole responsibility is DISCIPLINE. If a player is out of line, he’s benched, and no one can overrule him. He will be the man that players FEAR and RESPECT. He will be the one whom they HATE and seek to PLEASE. His standards will be high enought that no single player can meet them. He will work the team in a regimented, scheduled, and unwavering manner. He will ensure that the primary mission of his team is to ensure that the primary mission is execution of individual assignments, focus to reduce penalties, and ready immediate obedience to order. Right now, his name is Nick Saban. What UGA cannot get in a HC, they could certainly get by firing an inside linebacker’s coach (im looking at you, olividatti) and hiring a FULL time LB/STs coach…where discipline/attrition is the mission. Conspiracy, everything caused by some deep dark mysterious outside force ?
Hogwash from a biased lost on our blogs poster, fan of some other team, let’s see, let me guess PROBATION Alabama ?
Everyone knows very clearly that Mark Richt causes all the evils we have; that he specifically recruited a player whose grades are very good and therefore is not subject to being in fact a dumb***, that the recruit made an error on the field of which he would be the 1st to admit; that he has made those errors before too; that he likely might make a similar error in the future, perhaps even in this game; but, that the cause of the situation is that Mark Richt called his own SCHOLARSHIP RECRUIT HERE a DUMB***.
Just as Mark Richt is the reason why we kept Willie Martinez too long. Why we are keeping Mike Bobo too long for pension for his 17 children or to shuffle him back to QB coach which also obviously is of no use at either, looking at his results on the field, and how he never develops his back-ups, even playing CUPCAKES like Florida this season, he won’t get his back-up in, that he cannot convert a 3rd Down and NEVER COULD, never will. That he gives up on 3rd Down and reverts to some conservative position of not making mistakes on Offense while we remain no bloody good on 3rd Down Conversions – ALL the fault of Mark Richt.
That he has recruited 31 players to be on the field for kick-off a week from tomorrow and NONE of the 31 will be – again ALL Mark Richt’s fault.
That he is # 27 in won/loss after 2005 – again Mark Richt’s fault.
That he recruited all these guys who are # 2 Fulmer Cup after 2005 to-date, and mounting – with yet MORE bad choices for the 31 GONE for the kick-off a week from tomorrow – ALL Mark Richt’s great heralding for his recruiting when they got here, and all Mark Richt’s FAULT then.
That we are 2-8 vs Florida and all he can say is that Florida has an unfair advantage in JAX. Again, this is Mark Richt’s FAULT.
That he gets 3.5 million annual total compensation and therefore thinks he can call his own SCHOLARSHIP RECRUIT a student in good standing never arrested who made a simple mistake on the field or 2 or 3 or more who cares, that he anyway thinks he can call him a DUMB***.
The person who is what he is ? Mark Richt is a DUMB***.

K. Reeves,
As a former Georgia Bulldog who had his knee torn up by a dirty clip in the back, there is no excuse for what the Vandy offensive linemen were doing in this game. Every team has players that get caught up in the heat and passion of a ballgame and do and say things they have no business doing. To equate some trash talking with actually trying to hurt someone and possibly end another players playing career or the natural reaction to a dirty hit is absurd. I watched the game and the OFFICIALS along with both GEORGIA’s as well as VANDY’s coaches lost control and are ultimately to blame for this. Both teams’ players were talking trash to each other but in being honest in looking at each incident all but the shot to the head by Williams to that Vandy receiver were instigated by Vandy players and the Georgia players were reacting to a questionable and outright dirty hit in the case of The Vandy Center on Geathers. There is enough blame to go around and this needs to be put to rest.
Now as to Coach Richt if you read this YOU NEED TO WATCH WHAT YOU SAY, whether there were open mics or not, YOU WERE DEAD WRONG in saying anything to anybody until you had spoken to all parties involved and found out the truth of what happened. YOU undermined your credibility not only with your players but with your assistant coaches and now the fan base. I hope you have learned a valuable lesson from this and that you can correct the damage you have done to your credibility.

I want be back to comment any more after reading some of the most unreal comments about the UGA DAWGS. I go back to the fifties in support of UGA DAWGS and I have read some of the most crap I’v read In my life. So, I’v come to this conclusion. It appears to me everybody wants to be a UGA DAWG, but everone does’t qualitfy. That is the reason all the other teams in the SEC can have teams and have a reason to hate UGA DAWGS. PLEASE stop BED wetting, get a life, because life goes on.

@Big Dawg
Perhaps the Vandy players had to resort to playing dirty against Georgia simply because UGA was so vastly superior to every other team that they have played this year?
Then again, maybe there’s some other reason why only Georgia fans saw any dirty play by Vandy in that game? What I don’t understand is why even the Georgia fans didn’t see Vandy playing dirty during the game – only after the game.

This is just another example of the AJC trying to stir up trouble and make a mountain out of a mole hill. We need to be focusing on Florida and put the Vandy game behind us. The bottom line is we are 5-2 and have a good shot of making the SEC Championship game and that is news worthy (unlike this article).

I’m terrified that UGA will have to rely on Blair Walsh for a couple big kicks. He’s been so good until this year, but UGA’s history of finding ways to lose against Florida makes me think we should almost axe the idea of kicking fieldgoals (or extra points!!) completely.

DISNEYdawgs.com
“So then, what is the “deep dark mysterious outside force” that prevents UGA from simply hiring a new coach?”
It is affectionately called the DISNEYdawgs.com syndrome. We have the world’s recruiting ranking for this state of Georgia of finding but 2 others, 3 used to be, states who have more top recruits who go on to the NFL. We run off 31 – JUST GONE – from the Florida kick-off who should be playing vs Florida. STILL, with all that, we average the # 7 recruiting class all 11 years of the Mark Richt era – an era marked by mediocre results and 1 time finishing the top-ranked SEC team a year of marked DOWN SEC 2002 with only 1 other SEC team finishing 2002 in the Coaches’ Poll Top 25 a 4-loss Auburn. This out of 11 years to-date with no hope this season or any foreseeable season of being # 1 top-ranked SEC team. (2005 was 7 seasons ago and we ended up the # 3 top-ranked SEC team.) This season, despite PULLING OUR HIDDEN TRICK OF – 31 JUST GONE – we are ranked the # 6 Scout.com recruit rankings. This the – DREAM TEAM. Oh my. Again average both Rivals and Scout all 11 recruit rankings and we avg # 7. We are # 6 this season and DISNEYdawgs.com call this DREAM TEAM. Yeah, right. My DREAM is not to be # 7 in rankings or # 6 in rankings in recruiting, run off 31 of the 85 Scholarships, call 1 of the remaining a DUMB*** and be # 3 in The SEC or # 5 or # 7 where we probably are actually. My DREAM is to actually be good guys on and off the field, beat teams who end up in the top 10, not LOSE to teams who otherwise would not even make the top 25, quit with the crappy coaching staff hires, cease with the we will beat Florida next year BS and get on with being the # 11 all-time team in 1-A wins. I point out that we had an opportunity after 2005 to catch up on the programs ahead of us in the top 10 all-time in 1-A wins and have FAILED MISERABLY when they too were losing, us # 27 in won/lost 1-A wins after 2005. We pay him 3.5 million annually in total compensation. It is a cushy job. THEY – the of the DISNEYdawgs.com REALLY LIKE THIS. They SETTLE FOR THIS. I and the vast majority – AND GROWING REST OF US – are not in the least satisfied, and have resigned ourselves that THEY ARE THE ISSUE, that they cause our recruiting to not be what it could be stock-piling 6 TE and no FB, no OL, no depth at TB, no secondary and if we do have someone in the secondary moving him too to the LB where we already are and were stock-piled. Conservative 3rd Down draws. Fed up with it. Now, sir, you run in here, have the guts to put your team in your handle, mine clearly does a fine man, a man I have long admired here in my neighborhood, on our staff I point out, a RB of great repute. Put your team in your handle. Cease with the cloak of hiding your team affiliation. We both, you and I, are saying the same thing, sir. Only you are NOT a University of Georgia lover. I am. You aren’t. Quit with the BS about us, and trying to say all of us are DISNEYdawgs.com. We aren’t. There is no deep mysterious force. There is BAD COACHING STAFF headed and hired by the man responsible for the staff, Mark Richt who last spoke calling our Starting Strong Safety a DUMB***.

Judging by what I’ve read on these blogs, Georgia would be 7-0 right now if they’d only played the backup QB. Maybe Richt wants to get fired?
That’s a pretty sweet deal, drawing a multi-million dollar check for doing absolutely nothing. It worked out very well for Tommy Tuberville, and he even managed to get his Mississippi Mafia of assistant coaches a nice Alabama state pension before he checked out from Auburn.

I was a staunch Mark Richt supporter UNTIL I read the transcrpts of what he had to say about one of his players and basically saying the same thing about Grantham. I will always support the DAWGS, but, I could care less what happens to Mark Richt anymore. Reading what he had to say sickened me. It’s like watching your brother being beat up in a fight and you jump in and help the other guy! And after the cheap shot on Geathers, I wouldn’t have listened to one damn thing that Franklin had to say much less listen to it and then disparage your own guys. Richt needed to be admonished by McGarity!!

When the hell will Richt stop “learning lessons,” and start winning championships? The guy’s been in this job for 11 seasons! There is no excuse for laying down like that in front of Franklin. DON’T SHOW YOUR CARDS. Richt should be doing everything he can to help his team win. Badmouthing players behind their back, on camera nonetheless, is incorrigible. Just another reason why I’ve lost faith in Richt.

Rumor has it that Mark has finally saved up enough money to maintain his current lifestyle, but to also devote full time to his preaching pursuits. According to Mark, while he’s trying to meditate on the sidelines, talking to his pastor on the headset, the fans are making a ton of noise, the players are running on and off the field, and that Grantham guy is jumping all around like a crazy person. This goes on almost every weekend. What is a do-gooder guy to do???

I think the defensive backfields with TD/Sean Jones and Sean Jones/Greg Blue at safeties were pretty good. I cannot remember exactly who the starting CBs were each of those years, but we had excellent CBs every year from 2002-2007. I would say probably any of those (as well as Jermaine Philips-Wansley, et al DB squad) were all better than this year’s. Even though this year’s is pretty damn good now that Rambo is finally back in the saddle.

I’m putting this squarely in the coaches lap: Decisions on putting the game away toward the end of the game needs much improvement! What’s wrong with short passes to simply get a first down to keep the time moving rather than running into a pile and gaining nothing then finally punting and giving the ball up for the other team to have a chance to score? When it’s close at the end, YOU DO NOT WANT TO GIVE UP THE BALL UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!! Come on, get real and remember your defense is tired, don’t put more pressure on them and take the chance of losing!! Boo Boo, dig into your bag of tricks and make it happen! My goodness, you have perhaps the best quarterback in the SEC and certainly most capable receivers like Orson Charles and no defensive back can leap that high. You’re gonna need it in Jacksonville!! GO DAWGS!!!!

The rule of thumb on special teams is that they will win or lose 1 game a season. None of Dooley’s special teams ever looked uncoached. Franklin is taking a risk on ever getting another gig by coaching chop blocks and acting like a fool. SEC Presidents are loath to see their coaches make the school a laughing stock. It’s a good strategy for Coach Franklin to say that we’re not backing down from anyone and playing with a chip on one’s shoulder (the little engine that could). Taking a shot at Geather’s knee with a helmet from behind and possibly ending a player’s career is not the way to do it. Geathers, Williams, and Coach Granthem responded to Vanderbilt’s strategy and didn’t instigate anything. Coach Franklin is the one that should be apologizing for the cheap shots and then take the loss like a big boy (if he does indeed expect to play with the big boys).
