Anyone really feel like celebrating another ugly win over Vandy?

Aaron Murray had a big night against Vandy, but the Georgia offense was inconsistent. (Associated Press)

Aaron Murray had a big night against Vandy, but the Georgia offense was inconsistent. (Associated Press)

After Saturday night’s game in Nashville a dispirited Mark Richt sounded like anything but a victorious football coach.

“We’ve got a long way to go,” he said, obviously a very unhappy man.

Yes, Richt acknowledged with Chuck Dowdle’s prompting, Georgia is keeping pace with South Carolina in the SEC East, but he said “we’re kind of limping our way into being tied for first.”

Dowdle, always Mr. Positive, sounded like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Georgia had won its fifth game in a row, fourth conference win in a row, and yet, he said to Richt with a note of surprise in his voice, “you sound disappointed.”

Richt, apparently more in touch with reality than the happy-talk interviewer, answered flatly, “I am disappointed. I’m thankful for the victory … but I’m disappointed in how we played overall.”

Richt had good reason to be downcast. A Vandy team that had only been able to rush for a combined 45 yards in its two previous games racked up 200 against a Georgia defense that previously had appeared to be stout against the run. All night long, Vandy runners had big holes to run through, juked Georgia defenders with cutbacks and slipped through arm tackles.

With Isaiah Crowell essentially a nonfactor after sitting out the first quarter apparently for disciplinary reasons and then looking tentative during his very limited time in the game, with only one really good run, Georgia was one-dimensional on offense. While Aaron Murray had big numbers passing for the night and Marlon Brown finally got a chance to shine with two touchdown catches, the Dogs were not consistent in moving the ball most of the game.

Worst of all, the special teams play again was simply horrendous and almost cost Georgia another game (after playing a big part in the loss to South Carolina).

On the subject of the many special teams miscues — which included falling for yet another fake punt, giving up a kickoff return for a touchdown, two missed field goals and a blocked punt that nearly gave Vandy the game at the end — Richt lamented that they were “too big” to happen and have Georgia still “expect to win in this league. We’re just very fortunate to get out of here alive.”

Yes, a win is win and any kind of road win in the SEC is a good thing. But Saturday night in Nashville the Dogs looked like a team that might be capable of outlasting mediocre opponents but not much more.

The fact that Georgia remains tied for first in the SEC and still has favorable prospects seems more a fluke of scheduling and an off year in the division than a testament to the way the team is playing.

Feel free to share your views on Georgia’s latest ugly win.

Pathetic….More penalties, bogus play calling, special teams blunders, walsh missed field goals, poor tackling, murray inaccurate and sleep walking through first half, offensive line getting beat all night, poor communication all around, poor execution in all 3 phases, and ONCE AGAIN poor coaching all around….typical Georgia….

Dawgs’ inability to put this game away early proves they’re still not ready for prime time.

And the post-game dust-up was embarrassingly unnecessary.

I don’t care who started it, Grantham. Show some class.

Vandy always plays us tough, we’re still a young team learning our way through the always tough SEC and we’re 5-2 right now….I don’t care how we got there…Last week, the conversation was the improvement since Boise and now it’s like Russ died and we don’t have a replacement….DEPRRESSSING Bill. The Dawgs roll up four conference wins over teams with a cumulative 11-14 overall record and a combined 1-13 conference record. Before you get excited about that one combined conference win consider that Vandy played Ole Miss so one of those two bottom feeders had to win. In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.

BTW – I am sorry that those ruffians from the Harvard of the South played too rough for CTG and the Dream Team. I hope New Mexico State is not too tough on you. If they are you can console yourselves by chanting SEC! SEC! SEC! Perhaps you should consider sending a thank you note to Alabama & LSU for being the only two decent teams in the conference.

How was it “apparent” that it was for disciplinary reasons?

Please explain? Because that’s what the morons who announced the game said?

It looked more likely that Crowell is hurt and they didn’t want to over use him.

Perhaps it was for disciplinary reason, but you’re assuming here, with nothing to back it up.

It’s a good thing Butler made a good tackle because he took way too long to execute the punt — especially when he knew thay would be coming after him. I was thinking during the play — what the heck is he doing? He was using the same timing as if it were a routine punt. When you know they’re throwing the kitchen sink at you — you have to speed up your timing.

BK is just stating what most dawg fans feel about a team that under performs week after week. While LSU and AL show the football world how to win and put their opponents away the GA’s are embarrassing their fans and also their head coach by blundering their way to a win when they were clearly out played and out coached the entire game. Even Richt was dissappointed but what will he do to remedy this continuing trend of poor play calling and an absolutlely lousey play by his special teams? Why doesn’t Richt have any trick plays of his own to answer all the trick plays that GA has fell victim too this season? Is it beneath him?!? This type of performance cannot continue. I don’t care if they win out. This ugliness is too embarrassing and its been going on like this for too long. This is not winning like a champion or performing like a championship team.

Let’s gain some perspective fellow bloggers. I know we are all angry with the performance we had tonight. I think we have a very young team that has been beat up and battered. We have two weeks to get healthy (Ogletree, Robinson, Mitchell, and Washington back) and regroup before Florida. This is it, this is our opportunity to seize control of the East. South Cackalacky will lose to either Florida or Arkansas w/O Lartimore. Florida lost to Auburn which puts us right where we need to be. I know Bobo is awful, I know we let Vandy run it down our throat, and I know that our special teams play has been awful ever since Fabris left. The fact of the matter is – we still are in this thing. One week at a time fellow Dawgs. Let’s get ready for the gayturs and get some street credit back. Remember, we are very young. Our best TB was in HS last year, as well as our best wideouts. Our D has been stout, I’m not worried about them. Let’s grab our sacks and bring some pain to the lizzards in 2 weeks. GATA!

It’s a shame we didn’t play better on Special Teams – two missed field goals, blocked punt, Kick off Return for a TD, fake Punt against us. Offense will be fine once everyone is back and healthy. Defense too. But Special teams… it’s how we will lose to Florida or Auburn.

I was at the Vandy game when UGA came in 19 point favorites with Vince Dooley as the Coach and it was a 13-13 tie. I was there the last time Vandy beat Georgia in 1991. This win will look a lot better in hindsight when one thinks about the GIGANTIC plays that UGA had to make to win the game. Interception in the end zone. Touchdown passes to wide open receivers. D-linemen blocking critical passes. Interception by Rambo and him taking a knee (I said “Well done!” That was smart!”). Somebody from the sidelines should have been screaming “center eligible!!!!!” on the fake punt and if we throw any more bombs on third a five or less, I’m going to jump off a bridge or something. But Georgia had to have BIG plays to win this game and the players made big plays. The personal foul was after a clip away from the play. The Vandy center was dirty and tried to end our guy’s career. He should have punched him. No problem there. So, I’ve been there when we lost to Vandy and been there when we beat Vandy. It’s much better to beat Vandy.

Agreed AR Dawg – Crowel is the real deal. It just proves we need another ever down back. You can’t carry the ball 30 times and not reap the injuries that come with it. Heck, look at Ingram and Richardson, Richardson and Lacy now. Moreno even had Thomas Brown (ha!). Where is Ken Malcom? I know he left and came back, but who cares. He was the best looking back in the Spring. If he can play, put him on the field! I dont want Crowell to get banged up like Lattimore. We need that back out of NC.

Vandy has a tough time of it in the SEC — but in a lot of other conferences they would fare much better. They are a talented team with a lot of good athletes. Look how heavily they recruit the state of Georgia. Unfortunately we sputtered in the red zone a lot tonight and missed some points we should ahve put on the board — the game wouldn’t have been within reach if we had scored on those oppotunities. I’ll take the “W”. The big issue is how do we fix our special teams before the Florida game? Also, a few trick plays would be nice once in awhile as well as a few block punt attempts. We used to try to block punts all the time and had good success with it. Another beautiful thing about block punt attempts is that they’ll blow-up a fake attempt every time. Who is our special teams coach and why isn’t he paying attention? When Vandy brought in their back-up punter that should have alerted everyone that they might try a fake.

AFD — Last year we kept it close in every game but lost a lot of the ones we should have won. This year we’re winning the games we should win — definitely an improvement. The freshmen from the Dream Team are standing up and proving themselves. The upper classmen who stuck it out are playing with heart (unlike the ones who left did last year) and are showing great leadership. As much as you might hate it — this program is on the rise again. True, the team has it flaws — but so does very team. All I asked for before the season started was that the players play with heart and never give up (which were big problems last year). This team is playing with a lot of heart and I’m proud of them. The coaches are also utilizing their talent pool more effectively this year — even playing defensive stars on offense (they didn’t do that enough last year). So, Alabama or LSU we might not be yet — but we’re building and moving in the right direction again. The coaches need to be more aggressive and fix the special teams and this star studded team will continue to rise — TBTG.

No offense to Vandy, but think about this column title for a second. If your a team who has aspirations to get back to 10+ win seasons and SEC championships, how do you ever begin to celebrate a win over Vandy? Vandy has always seemed to play UGA tough. It never seems to be the blowout everyone thinks it should be. Vandy isnt the type of opponent you celebrate winning on like you’ve stepped up in the world. You celebrate the fact you didnt manage to screw up and lose to a team you should beat. I think UGA overlooked them a bit. The switch to Rogers at QB caught the D planning off guard. They played sloppy, but didnt blow the game. A win is a win in this case. Just taking care of business…leave it at that.

Mike

October 16th, 2011
1:51 am

Another thing. UGA might need to hire a special teams coach…a for real special teams coach. Its obvious they are ill prepared as they nearly blew this game. A TD runback, another converted fake punt on them that led to another TD for Vandy, and a punt blocked at the end which could have been a total disaster. Let’s not forget letting a 260+ defensive lineman run a fake punt in for a TD in the South Carolina game which was huge in a close game. They let Ole Miss run a punt back for a TD too. This is absurd. This needs fixing worse than Bobo and his antics. At least the offense still put up 33. Without the special teams mistakes, Vandy isnt ever close in this game.

He won’t even back up his players and coaches. CTG has the fire and probably should be the HC. The East is very weak and UGA is beginning to look even weaker. The West has the better coaches and it shows every week. UGA needs to a make a change and make it with a big time coach. The O, the D, and the special teams looked awful against a lesser opponent. If you know your offense looks like crap, why not take over the OC duties and fire Bobo? This stupid. Your loyalty should lie with the players and the university. Sloppiest football game of all-time. The # 116 offense in the nation, if our Defense had not hit Jordan Rodgers’ arm on the last play, had a wide-open receiver in the right corner of the end zone to beat us, while of course, Vandie’s Defense is not in the Top 25 either. Like we remain for the 3rd Consecutive Year. Why should it be a surprise that we aren’t viewed as doing well ?

“Without the special teams mistakes, Vandy isnt ever close in this game.”

Are you suggesting that this sport is not a team sport and that the team was not PITIFUL ? This game was sealed at the beginning of the game. We started out slowly against a CUPCAKE and then at the end FIZZLED OUT altogether. We watched a team who absolutely have no offense, DOMINATE our defense. We watched our offense, once again, come out unprepared with yet again MORE SUSPENDED players the coaching staff HIDES FROM US, or tries to – and this offense just could not do a thing. Richard Samuel ? He was great ? I must have been watching a different game from you, sir. I haven’t witnessed Richard Samuel great in 1 game as a Bulldog.

Aaron Murray’s Offense

SETTLED

for

6 FIELD GOALS vs a CUPCAKE. Without settling for 6 field goals, this game is a blow-out. There now I feel better; I just figured out the perfect answer to Georgia winning 5 straight games and not being ranked at all for the 3rd Consecutive Season, you saying the special teams is all that kept Vandie in the game. Look, Vandie sucks and so do we.

Excellent piece Bill….I’m afraid what we saw last night is more indictive of where our team is. Tons of talent just a little misguided. Something is missing. We thought we might be knocking on the door of greatness but I would contend we are still climb out of mediocrity. Richt isn’t doing a great job this year. Should have beaten every team on our schedule, except Boise, comfortably. We give SC the game on a silver platter, Ole Miss hangs around, Miss St. is punchless but we allow them to just hang around, Tennessee is within a score late and should not have been, and now this Vanderbilt game. Arghhhhhh Another glaring problem is back…penalties and the big kind…Geathers should have been ejected for the punch late to the Vandy lineman. We have to be more disiplined than this. Crowell suspended, Shawn Williams late hit, what the heck was Grantham doing at the end of the game…embarrassing!!!!!

This is how we play!!! We have played like this for many years!!! We will never put away teams!!! We play everybody close and games we should dominate never happens. Talent alone has won the games we have won the last 5 years!!! We get outcoached in every game!!! Rumor has it that the Gaytors will go ahead and let us win so we want fire Richt. I feel like celebrating a ugly win or any type of win over the opponent. They now have a much needed week off to heal some nicks and get ready to play Florida. Ask them if they would have taken an ugly win over Auburn. Ask any team if an ugly win is better than a loss.
Somehow, Bill, I think you must be a closet tech. Fan. You seldom have much positive to say about UGA. UGA may not have been on their top game last night, but they won. A lot of teams in all venues of sports, do not win pretty every time, but a W is still more desirable than a L. Teams have to win and learn how to win ugly sometimes. It is human nature that sometimes, the effort, or strength is not there but the sign of a good team and players, is that ability to still come out on top. These young DAWGS are starting to show, even in a game like last night, that they are a team, and they are only going to learn from this game, and keep improving. I for one, am proud of these young folks and I think they have a bright future ahead of them.

Lack of discipline, on and off the field. Stupid play-calling. Poor preparation. No focus. No intensity, no killer instinct. This is what we have become. I’m frankly surprised that people don’t run trick plays and fake punts on us every other down, since we always seem totally unprepared for them. We may well beat the Gators in two weeks if we can get everybody healthy, and we may win the depleted East, but that will be a hollow victory, a win based on talent alone. Unless we develop some sense of discipline and an ability to understand the concept of team football, and unless we can string together four quarters of intense, take-no-prisoners play that is commensurate with our level of talent, either LSU or Alabama will expose us for the frauds we are in the SECCG.

And then what? Will the talent finally stop coming? What then?

SEC Follies

October 16th, 2011

Serious Dawg fans need to start organizing and demanding that Richt be fired. Otherwise, sports writers will be asking the same questions this time a year from now.

Richt represents mediocrity. Saban, Miles, Spurrier, and Chizik represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship would be at least 50:1.

Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it.

As they say in poker, “Read ‘em and weep.”

Offense, Defense and Special Teams looked poor at best. Why does Bimbo call a deep pass on third and five? Considering how Murray is terrible on the deep throws makes you realize he has no clue. The “wilddog” or wildcrap” formation is a joke. It has NEVER EVER worked, why keep trying it??? The kicking game, which use to be the bright spot on this team, is no longer. Getting burn on trick plays in a number of games shows a lack of coaching. The ‘D’ gave up a lot of yards to Vandy but got the final stop, thankfully. I am trying to figure out why we have no running backs at UGA. Once again the Dawgs recruit a bust at tail back. Crowell is just another King and Ealey. Think SEC competition is too much for him. This player has the wrong attitude to compete in collegiate football. Lacks maturity, motivation, and desire. Since the Carolina game he has virtually disappeared.

As for the running game McClendod needs to go and go now. Bobo, what do you call running plays the develope parallel to the line of scrimmage or you run to the outside when we are trying to burn clock, gain downs, and gain distance. The offensive line is just a bunch of big fat boys. There is nothing physical about these guys.

Why in hell do you not run a jumbo package with your TEs. Bobo has gone back to his old ways. Only took 7 games. Bobo is a substandard OC. How long will CMR and the AD put up with this OC and the offensive team’s position coaches. Shameful coaching!

Can we run the table? Who knows. All I know is that the 1980 NC Dawgs had a lot of ugly wins and nobody complains about them 31 years later. Let’s take this as a learning experience and use our 2 weeks to prepare properly for UF. Very sobering, I think Richt was right to be dejected, This was a game that displayed all the flaws this team has, Anyone who thinks this team should play in SEC championship game are not facing reality, Some of the flaws are special teams, offensive line, defensive line, running backs, Kicking game and game preperation by coaching staff, I think Richt has finally realized that he has some serious problems with his program, Can he correct them? Desert Fox 12:19 and Dawg Pile 1:06 said a mouthful. I was lamenting with a UGA buddy before the game how offenses that are fun to watch have at least some misdirection plays. Why is it as soon as the ball is snapped, 11 defenders can go right at our running back? Can’t Bobo and Richt see all the misdirection plays run by AUB, Oregon and practice some of those? AUB runs misdirection almost every play. When are we going to fake a punt? Vandy did it on 4th and 14. When are we going to onside kick? We could be poor at this and it would still be successful because NO ONE would suspect it. If we have no imagination, then COPY what you see successful coaches doing. I love Grantham’s fire.

Interesting comments after an interesting game.

CMR Fanboys who have been giving realistic Dawgfans a hard time seem to be suddenly waking up to reality. Perhaps they’re following Mark Richt who also seems to be getting it that the Georgia football team has “a long way to go.”

We have a long way to go to be mediocre. If we do manage to end up in the dome, I’m afraid we’ll wish we could concede after the first quarter.

After the game, one of my relatives called. She is not much of a football fall, but had watched the game, and she said, “Is Vandy that good, or is Georgia that bad?”

Most of us know the answer. At least we do today. It’s way to obvious. It’s painfully obvious. It’s in your face like a two by four to the nose obvious.

It’s not just that we have a football team that has a long way to go. We have a football *program* that has a long way to go.

Easy enough to blame players, and “the team,” and both deserve some blame, but the guys that are in charge, the extremely highly paid professionals who are supposed to know football are the real problem.

As I watched this Vandy game my impression was that our team actually seemed a little bit better than it has up until this game. There were a few signs of good team play, and of improvement. There were moments where real talent was obvious. Of course, those were mixed with all the discipline problems, penalties, clueless responses to trick plays, and the many other signs of a poorly coached football team. We have “a long way to go!”

If we traded player with LSU or Alabama, and let our coaching staff have them instead of the players we have, we’d still look terrible against Vandy.

Thanks, Coach!

The flag football know it alls, couch potatoes, and nerds are out in force. Ugly game but not surprising. Georgia had two road trips to Tennessee in a row. Going into Knoxville, regardless of how UT is playing, is quite an experience. These pups looked flat. Understandable. Vandy came to play too — give them some credit. Georgia is a young team coming off a 6-7 year — not the second coming of the Steel Curtain. It’s a work in progress — but there has been progress. Murray looked good. You do not go to a game and criticize the team from the first play to the final play. Coach Richt and the team needs your support. If all you are going to do is moan and complain then keep it at home. Do I like everything I see, every play that is called, and every decision our coaches make? Of course not. However, I’m a Dog fan and in the end we support our players and our coaches. Go DOGS!

WHEN are we going to recognize the importance of special teams and have a full time special teams coach? We are pathetic. Our boys look lost whenever a team doesn’t just line up in a vanilla package and punt or kick off the ball. Expect Florida,Auburn,Tech and heck even Kentucky and New Mexico State to have fake packages. Even by showing such stuff it throws off our coverage and return games. Grantham’s anger was understandable as Vandy was throwing low blocks at the knees of our line players all night. Several were of the behind the play clip kind that were intended to cause injury. The one on Geathers was way away from the play and intentional injury was its only purpose. Yes its dirty pool but the players have to keep their cool. Getting even is whipping them on the scoreboard, Grantham would best be suited taking his anger out on himself for yet again not having his players finish tackles and defend the halfback pass that Ole Miss had scored on us earlier this year. We will not beat Florida, Auburn or Tech with the mental mistakes and arm tackles our players had against Vandy. Richt is right a lot of work to do and the players need to focus. Its that time of year,

CMR, “…I hate the fact that at the end of a game, we can’t just shake hands like gentlemen and walk off the field like men of integrity…the fact is when the game is over, it’s over. You shake hands…It’s like at the end of a play: when the play is over it’s over, you go to the sideline. And we didn’t do a very good job of that at times…”

Pretty much as simple as that. We lost our composure too often; too many penalties, no matter what another coach or player says, we have to stay focused and composed. Personal fouls show lack of discipline on a player’s part; and can end up costing a game.

CMR, “I am disappointed. I’m thankful for the victory … but I’m disappointed in how we played overall.”
I’m disappointed too: no running game and not stopping the run; not moving the ball at all on our last possession, leading to a blocked punt (and very nearly a winning TD for Vandy). Murray’s personal best day notwithstanding, gotta run the ball and stop the run; a bunch of passing yards doesn’t get it. Hard to figure we can’t run the ball with the biggest O line in the Free World. That and Murray being pressured on most plays. Instead of so many blaming CMB, how ’bout Will Friend?
Heck yes I’m glad we won; but it sho was ooooglee.
OkieDawg…CMR’s flippant comments are wearing thin…” Not all dirty laundry needs to aired to the public. Actually, from Crowell’s point of view in particular, it might have been a classy comment by not calling him out in public, keeping it in the family. Some things are just none of our business.

I’ve never been on this website but some things should be obvious.

Crowell’s hurt and has been playing banged up for weeks. Similarly Samuel is hurt. One problem for us is that we have no depth at that position. One thing I’m not doubting this season is the heart and mental toughness of our dawgs.

I also agree with others that our special teams play looked bad. I was also similarly surprised that our defense against the run looked like it did. Similarly our offensive line seems to be hit or miss when it comes to making holes for our run game.

Some things folks post I can agree with. Georgia is a relatively young team and in comparison to last year there is a change. They are finding ways to win games they are supposed to win and those that are close. Last year they were finding ways to lose the close ones.

I like this team better than last season’s. I think Richt is a good coach. I DO think our bulldogs need to start finding ways to beat the big teams again. The last couple season’s whenever we walk into a fight with a ranked team, we haven’t pulled out with a win. We do need more of that killer instinct. Game ain’t over til it’s over.

Young team? yes. Beat up team? probably. But none of that factors into the final score. You either win or loose. According to most accounts we’re dripping with talent. Why can’t we play up to our potential? I think it’s because CMR plays “not to loose” instead of “playing to win”.

I have no inside knowledge, just a dawgs fan with another opinion.
Richt said it was a “coach’s decision” to hold IC out of the 1st quarter. His toughness was never challanged in high school. While he has shown he is a fantastic runner, he has not shown toughness. he has pulled himself out repeatedly this year in tough situations when we needed him out there. earlier in the year I kept wondering why we were pulling him but after paying close attention I realized he was requesting to come out. Late in the 1st half of the Tenn game I did the rewind thing on the DVR and you could read Richts lips as IC came out; He said “your coming out???” dropped his head and shook it from side to side as crowell came off the field. My opinion is he was sending a message for him to MAN UP. you have to play through some physical pain when you get to big boy football.

Where do I start—Take your pick—-

1) Special Team–We had a little bit of everything there–
A) Missed Field Goals
B) Give up another FAKE PUNT
C) Give up a TD on a KICKOFF RETURN
D) Give up a BLOCKED PUNT with 10 SECONDS left in the game.

I THINK OUR SPECIAL TEAMS HIT FOR THE CYCLE LAST NIGHT

2) When is our OFFENSIVE LINE going to pickup a blitz? A.M. is getting beat up every game. Please OFFENSIVE LINE BLOCK SOMEONE.

3) What happen to our RUN DEFENSE last night, did they stay home & they did give up another TD on a trick play..

4) Our defensive & special teams should get ready for a lot of trick plays the rest of the season because we have proven that we cannot stop those kind of plays especially with Florida,Auburn & GT remaining on our schedule.

4) Thank God we don’t play Alabama,LSU & Arkansas this year

The win over Vandy was ugly. Perhaps it was what the Dawgs needed at this point to let them know they can’t ease up and cruise into the SEC championship game. They have next week off before they face the Gators, and that will be a critical time for injuries to heal and attitudes to be adjusted.

Bill, I think your article really sums it up. We got outta there with a win and with Florida losing and South Carolina needing OT to beat Miss State, we are still in this SEC East race.

I thought this game reminded me A LOT of the Colorado game last year. Same time of year, playing on the road in a small stadium against a team with inferior athletes, same color scheme for opponents, and Georgia definately played down to the level of our competition.

Obviously, the big difference was that we lost at CU and we won at VU, but a last second fumble cost us the game at Colorado and a last second tackle by our punter saved a victory at Vanderbilt. While I saw some signs that our team has improved over the last few weeks, I didn’t see any difference between our play at CU last year and our play at VU this year. That scares the hell out of me.

Florida coming in off of THREE STRAIGHT LOSSES. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Yes we are mediocre now, but I think we are passing through mediocre on our way from worse to better and hopefully best. The defense did struggle some but give Rodgers his due! Defense overall has made great strides in a year and a half. We have 2 freshmen receivers who can catch, a running back that has brought some hope and excitement back. I’m not thrilled with Murray, but we are slowly getting things right again. I’m glad we did not get overconfident and have this game against the Gators! Maybe we got the wake up we needed. Off-the-field behavior (not perfect but compared to today…), and fans that stayed to the end. Did I mention victories? Victories are much better than simple wins. Victory of Vandy was the simplest or, more appropriately, the cheapest.

1) Released Mr.Richt and let Todd Gratham take over.(Grantham came to uga to win championships-Mr.Richt did not) This move will save millions.

2) Keep Mike Bobo and the rest of the staff-Grantham need to run a power-I offense and pass only when needed.

Every team has bad games. Even Bama, LSU, Florida, Auburn, and South Carolina, if you look back at everyone of the Championship seasons of Bama, LSU, Florida, and Auburn, they all had bad games against teams that they were suppose to blow out, winning is what counts, even when its an ugly win, what’s different this year, is they are winning those games, not like last year, in which we would have lost these games.

This may be one of the ugliest wins eYe can remember. Lucky is an understatement. We could and should have shut the door on Vandy but didn’t. Offense sputters and defense almost gave in. Yes, it’s a “W” in the record column but we are not a good football team. The running game lacks focus, the OL appears to be knee deep in concrete, special teams sure aren’t special for us and red zone opportunities are wasted. Murray may have had a few plays turn out but overall did not impress me. The Crowell kid is our only chance as a running back but apparently can;t cut it yet.. Our place kicker has shown yet again to be as inconsistent as the offense. eYe am a UGA fan and pull for them every game but we are just not a good, solid team. The games speak for themselves. On another note, VIRGINIA BEAT GT!!!!!!!! As discouraged as eYe sometimes get about UGA, Richt and things, at least we haven’t let a team on the scale of VIRGINIA beat us. eYe love every minute of it too!!!!! No reason to celebrate such an ugly win. If UGA REALLY feels that it is championship material – they would be rolling-up scores like AL and LSU – of which those two teams did yesterday against opponents UGA has already played – but barely beat. UGA is only fortunate because of their cream-puff schedule after their 1st 2 games. Yes – UGA has won 5 in a row – but against WHO? Those 5 teams are 1-13. Wow – says a lot about uga.

I could really care less about winning the SEC East this year and I’m tired of hearing about it. Let’s just play the games and let the chips fall where they may. If we win it great. It would be a lot of fun to play in the SECCG again (until Trent Richardson breaks 100 yards rushing midway through the 2nd quarter. Then it won’t be so fun anymore), but this season should not be judged by an SEC East title. The way South Carolina is playing it wouldn’t at all surprise me if we limped in to the SEC title game with 8-4 regular season record. Would anybody be excited about that? I sure as hell wouldn’t. Let’s just try to win the games in front of us and stop talking about winning the lousy SEC East. It just wreaks of desperation.

Anybody considered that every team has a DUD game, even the great ones? How do upsets happen? The favorite plays poorly and the underdog rises up and plays the game of their life. How does the great Alabama defense give up 28 points to Auburn after being up 24-0. IT HAPPENS. The Dawgs escaped their DUD. They tackled poorly. They couldn’t run the football and still won. We have a makeshift O-line that has very little chemistry. We still won. I’ll reserve the lynch the coaching staff comments until after the Florida game. It was a DIRTY game all around. The only reason( I can think of) Kwame didn’t get ejected for throwing a punch was because he got his knee taken out from behind while engaged with another blocker on the opposite side of the field from the play. Going back and watching it, it was glaringly obvious that they were trying to injure our defenders every snap. The ref’s let that game get out of control, then immediately ran for the exit as time expired.

Richt is disappointed, who really gives a crap if this loser is disappointed. That’s his team that is an embarrassment to the UGA fan base, and that is his coaches that once again prove how terrible they are at game planning and preparing the team. Those are his average at best players that he recruited, or should i say he recruited after the top talent signed with Bama, Auburn, S.C. and Florida. That is his Q.B. that can’t throw the deep ball, yet his O.C. continues to throw the ball deep everytime UGA has a 3rd and 6 or 7, when a simple out pattern or a simple crossing route to the tight end would get the 1st down. But no, he continues to allow this idiot Bobo to call plays. And that is his team that once again has a team fake a punt and get momentum. The funny thing about this pathetic program is the fans aren’t disappointed. That tells you all you need to know about the state of the UGA program. Any other fan base would have had it with this loser and his excuses, and his arrogance, but not UGA fans. all the UGA fans think about is him winning 7 or8 years ago. Sounds like another VInce Dooley nightmare for UGA to me. These idiotic fans will support this loser as long as he wants to stay in Athens, after all, to stay head coach at UGA, all you have to do is win an SEC title every 10 or 15 years, doesn’t matter if your program has gotten passed by Bama, LSU, Auburn, Florida,S.C, Arkansas, and Vandy will have passed Richt and this pathetic program in another year. I saw where Richt said he shouldn’t called a timeout when Vandy shifted before they threw the halfback pass, but he didn’t. So funny all this loser every says is should have done this, should have hired this guy, should have fired this guy, should have signed this guy, should have done this, should have done that. A good leader, and a good coach, does not say i should have done this 50 times, he actually does it. This loser has done nothing but make excuses and second guess his terrible leadership ability for 11 years now, the only problem is good coaches don’t get to second guess themselves time and time again. They get fired for not making the right decision, but not at UGA, as long as you say i should have done this, and you lose, that’s all that matters. If Richt is disappointed in the program he has built, may be he SHOULD do us all a favor and retire. That is one should have he will never admit too. This guy is a joke, and UGA SHOULD fire his ass before he embarrasses the program yet again in Jax. But McGarity want do a damn thing, and Richt will say he should have done this or that after another ass kicking in Jax. This clown and Bobo will not beat Florida, Auburn, or Ga.Tech, and McGarity will say he should have fired Richt after he gives him 3 or 4 more years. UGA has become the school that should have.

eYe have never been a Richt fan. That said, it is evident that we are what we are showing by this stage of the season. Can we grow a little more in the last games? Maybe, maybe not. We haven’t shown much in dominating anyone other than CC. The Crowell kid and Mitchell have looked to me like game changers and potent offensive threats. eYe don’t know the full story on Crowell but it seems apparent he has taken a beating the likes of which he wasn’t used to in high school ball. He looks to me like the only running threat we have put out there so far but eYe think he has been hurt for the last several games. eYe don’t like him throwing the ball after plays that fail and appearing to run out of gas on consecutive plays. Maybe he will develop into a player that can be depended on to make a difference but something seems to be hindering him from being the work horse we need. Maybe just youth. Recruiting these kids much of the time relies on what their high school coaches and contacts can share and be capable of making a reliable assessment on. Some kids with less ability often are better team players and fighters in the trenches when it’s needed. Some coaches are better at organizing a team and ensuring depth and player development than others. eYe think UGA can do better than what has been shown the past several years. Earlier posts regarding the need for some misdirection plays on offense are right on the money. Our coaches actually appear blind to remedies for our ailments until the fanbase continually points it out to them and they are backed into a situation of eventually doing what is obviously needed. Good news is Virginia Beat Gt! BAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

I am so tired of all of the negative UGA fans. Just think what it would be like for the football players and the coaches if they had the full support of the fans. Let one little something go wrong and these supposedly fans are all down their throats that they cannot do anything right. If you are truly a bulldog fan, you should support the team the entire time. If the fans in the stadium would stay up and yelling for the team the entire game, you could help keep them pumped up to do their jobs. They need the support of the fans even more when something has gone wrong instead of everyone sitting there all down and gloom. All of these young men are out there doing their best; they are not trying to mess up. If you are a graduate of the University of Georgia and you are negative against our team, you should return your degree and diploma to the University of Georgia. I am tired of all of you negative fans. I can say this because I have three degrees from the University of Georgia. I am proud to be a bulldog!

What really ticks me off is when the Richt-lovers bring up how “young” UGA is. Today, LSU has around 40 former players in the NFL, Bama and UGA in low to mid 30’s. Yet, LSU and Bama reload, recruiting the same kids Richt does. UGA’s facilities are just as good as LSU and Bama’s. Where does the problem lie? Auburn has struggled because Tubberville’s last couple of classes were bad. Chizik is correcting those mistakes now. Urban Meyer lost focus at Florida, but that is being corrected by Muschamp. Has Richt become the “Paterno” of UGA? Does he leave on his terms?

Vandy is anything but an SEC powerhouse, and UGA has hit the weak part of their schedule. SOS, just a different season. UGA has a weak schedule, and should even beat Florida this year, since Florida is so banged up they are going to 2 and 3 on their depth chart.

This is was a huge win for Georgie, matter of fact, chances are UGA will not even face a stress test this season with Auburn or Florida, so CMR will keep his job.

On a side note, anyone one this blog who supports Grantham and the way he acted last night only confirms UGA is nothing more than than thug problem, with no class. Win the big games, including a national title or 2, then maybe, just maybe you might get some respect. Then again, maybe not.

In two weeks we get Ogletree , Washington, and a few others back on the defense that are going to make us super tough on that side of the ball. Not to mention Crowell is beat up and will feel better in two weeks and Malcolm Mitchell will be back too. Please reserve your judgment for when we actually lose again. I could see the game unraveling from the TV. Example: GA is 3 & 2 on the Vandy 29 yd line w/ a 5 point lead; instead of running the ball, Bobo decided it would be best to pass for a TD. Result? Vandy intercepted the ball on the 2 yd line. If GA would have run the ball, they would have; A) Kept the clock moving B) Had a chance to get the 1st down C) At the very least moved the ball the the middle of the field to make it a 8-point game. Instead, they gave the ball back to Vandy late in the 4th QTR with only a 5-point lead.
Stupid play calling.
Another thing I called was the blocked punt; With 15 seconds left in the game, going for a blocked punt should have been expected, How stupid is the UGA Special Teams coach???

This was a big game for Vandy, their coaches did a good job, they have played lights out at home this year and we kept giving them chances… We were clearly the dominant team but boneheaded plays kept them in the game. Murray still hasn’t played his best game, the run defense took the day off and our special teams were not special…. this is all correctible. The biggest break for Georgia and the dumbest play by Vandy was the pass on first down inside Georgia’s 10 yard line that resulted in an interception. Vandy had been moving the ball on the ground and went away with nothing on an excellent scoring opportunity. A stupid call and bad pass.

Scott Howard needs to air check himself. He calls plays as actual great plays with great excitement…..and then says “nope he was outah bounds”. He needs to call the game with about a second delay, actually reporting what happens, not what he wishes to happen as a homer….. not that a homer is a bad thing. He early-called two plays in the second half that were drops or our of bounds. I was driving in from the airport and screamed at the radio twice when disappointed by an excited call on a no play. He needs to listen to how foolish it makes him sound when he gets too excited on an early call. I like his voice and he is an exciting play by play man, when he keeps his emotions in check and reports what is happening.

Personally I’m good with Richt’s response. This is no time for smiling fakery – UGA got an ugly win, and there’s no way around it. The special teams are in melt down mode, the running game couldn’t get anything going, penalties out the wazoo, and once again the Dawgs were unable to put away a mediocre team. BUT, it is an SEC W, and they all count. Last year the Dawgs would have found a way to lose this one. This year, they found a way to win, which is what they had to do. Be glad there is a bye week and try to improve and beat the fraking gators. Take it one game at a time. Go Dawgs!

I remember the Vandy game in 2007. We won 20-17 by a field goal at the end (after Darryl Gamble cause a fumble as Vandy was driving to score). We lost to South Carolina that year and the week before the Vandy game we were shellacked by UT. But after we beat Vandy, we went on to beat the Gators, Auburn in a blackout and Hawaii in the bowl game. Maybe we wont do that this year but I’ll take an ugly win any day. Am having real mixed emotions. Glad to see the Dawgs get a win, but we sure aren’t playing well. With the talent we have on the team, we should have blown Vandy away. (And you can say that about three or four games every season for the last six or seven years.)
I’m really afraid we’re going to win just enough to save Mark Richt’s job, and though I like Coach Richt..he has NOT done his job over the last several years. And I think it’s time to shake his hand, thank him, and wish him well on his next coaching job.

As per usual, UGA was,,,,undisciplined, uninspired, uncommitted, unprepared and poorly coached.
Punting on fourth down….at midfield…with scant few seconds on the clock makes one question if Coach Richt has ignored all the reality in all the years he has been involved with football. He has a given proclivity for “playing not to lose”…….a very poor strategy for winning football games. If he wished to …” play it safe”…..he could have ‘downed the ball’ on fourth down and turned the ball over to Vandy at mid-field and played “prevent defense” with so little time on the clock. He didn’t do this because he doesn’t possess a mind that is capable of ‘rational game strategies” in difficult games. With the talent on UGA’s football team, any coach in America could have a similar if not better record. Talent without “intelligence” doesn’t go as far as one would like. With an “above average” coach at UGA….Ten years would produce 110 wins and a 7-0 record at this point in our season.
Coach Richt seems to not only lack the intelligence, but also lacks the motivation, coaching skills, and the mental toughness to successfully coach a division 1-A school. His current record reflects the talents of an also-ran coach who is outperformed by his peers nearly every time he takes the field.

Once again, Bobo calls a horrible game. This guy should be in Division III football not with the big boys. His play calling is a complete joke and he is as mentally savy as a 7th grader. It is so frustrating to have someone call plays …..that actually work only to have them immediately stop calling those plays. Scenario 1, we’re running the ball great and then we start throwing the ball subsequently killing the drive. Scenario 2, we’re throwing the ball great and then we start running the ball subsequently killing the drive. If something is working then don’t change it until they stop it. His stupidity kills drives. I hope CMR gets a clue and sees this bum for the incompetent idiot he is. I think everyone can now agree the problem isn’t with the defense but rather with the offense. Yes, there are issues to fix on defense but nothing like the tragedy on the offensive side of the ball. Here’s one simple lesson that Bobo can’t seem to understand…having the ball on a slow matriculating offense that drives the ball down the field is defensive in nature in that it keeps the other team’s offense off the field and our team’s defense off the field. You see theissue is that our defense is out there on the field waaaaay too long. It’s just that simple. Our offense can’t seem to matriculate down the field in small chunks. Instead, we rely on individuals to make big plays. Don’t get me wrong….its nice to have individuals who can do that but isn’t it nicer to have a team do it rather than a handfull of players? I really hope CMR gets a clue and fires this clown soon. BOBO SUCKS!!!! and…he’s ruining CMR’s career.
Oh yeah, I was at the game and we had some Vandy Alumni sitting near us and you would think they would be fairly nice. Nope, the guys sitting near us were completely mean spirited ugly people. I don’t think all of their fans are but the ones we were sitting near were and we weren’t being ugly at all. This one guy had his 10 year old son with him and he broke out in to cursing at this UGA couple sitting behind me. I was very proud that this UGA couple took the high road and pointed out to him that he shouldn’t be talking like that in front of his son. After that point was made the Vandy fan was morally destroyed. His own son was trying to cover up his father’s mouth from saying anything else. I told my wife its always best to take the high road and be nice to people and I’m sure he heard us. I said it loud enough for him to hear us. It was really a great moment for Southern Hospitality…..instead of lowering to the Vandy fan’s level the UGA couple rose above and really showed how to behave in the stadium. I was very proud and if you were there to see and hear it then you would have been too whether you’re a UGA fan or a Vandy fan.

Bottom line. We won. Enough said. Ugly win still has the word win in it. Let’s fix the special teams problems and move forward. We’ve got a lot to play for in a couple of weeks, so let’s look to the positive, which is that the game actually matters.

On another note, cut blocking is quite simply dirty and clearly ought to be scrutinized more closely. The refs let it get out of hand by not penalizing Vandy for dirty blocking during the game. Cut blocking and the types of hits quarterbacks are taking are two things that the SEC could make a big difference in with the rules. It seems to me these issues are much more pressing than the silly celebration before they hit the endzone rule. We’re talking injuries here. The SEC or NCAA needs to act quickly to protect players the way the NFL has.

If anyone had said at the biggining to the year that UGA would finish the regular season 10-2 and play in the SEC championship game, every UGA fan would have excepted that. Now it looks like there is a good chance of that happening and some are still complaning. We did not play well, but we still won on the road in the SEC. The mistakes being made by players are correctable. This team is very young. Even if they lose in the SEC CG and win their bowl game, UGA will start next year ranked in the top 10. Quit complaning and support your team and the coaching staff. All the negativity is not helping, and certainly does not help recruiting.

Sorry Bill. I love Dawg football. Have for over half a century. What I have seen over the last few seasons is not UGA football. In no way, shape or form. It hurts when a win is met with a sigh of relief instead of unbridled excitement. The Vandy victory still feels like a loss to me. I called the punt block. Thought it would be block then scoop for Commodore triumph. Glad I was wrong. Sort of. If it takes loss like that to get Saint Mark Wretch out then so be it. These Dawgs are unmotivated and totally uninspired. Never thought my guys would fall onto par with Vandy. It has happened. Only blindest cannot see change is mandatory for Dawg success. Win out or not! Sigh. :(

Richt refuses to hire a special team coach saying:

Richt said his thinking on having a special teams coach hasn’t changed. He was asked about it because of the team’s struggles in that area lately; Georgia divies the duties up between several of the nine assistants rather than hiring one coach to oversee all special teams.

“It’s a whale of a job and I think it’s better to spread it out, quite frankly,” Richt said. [No $%* Sherlock]

Richt also didn’t indicate he would get any more personally involved, other than what he would normally do to make sure the concerns were being addressed.
“I’m not an expert on special teams,” he said. “I’m not gonna sit here and say I have all the answers in that area. But I’m going to make sure that we’ve got a good plan.” [Eh, . . . Moron]

Well, I agree with your piece, Bill.
The Dawgs are not a well coached team. Haven’t been for far,far too long. Ugly, ugly, and ugly.
Will anything be learned by the players from this game? Maybe not.
By the coaches? Odds are…not.
Just waiting for the ax.
Sad thing is that I believe we will be right back here in ‘12 with the same record, and the same bonehead coaches.
You folks who are satisfied and understanding of this calamity will probably be getting better seats next year. You folks who are not satisfied and understanding of this calamity can catch the Dawgs on ESPN3, and save time, money, and gas on a below average team.

I hope this is a replay from a few seasons ago when UGA struggled mightily to beat Vandy but then went on a tear whipping Fla, AU and GT convincingly before beating the crap out out of media darling and undefeated Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl. As for myself I am glad to see some fire from a coach. CTG has the respect of every player if he didn’t before. You know if a team holds and chop blocks you all night one tends to get a little testy.

BELIEVE ME, RICHT IS THANKFUL HE’S IN THE SEC EAST. IF HE WAS IN THE WEST, HE KNOWS HE WOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED YEARS AGO. GEORGIA, UNDER RICHT, IS NOWHERE CLOSE TO LSU,ALABAMA, OR ARKANSAS. RICHT IS A FINE MAN AND A GOOD COACH BUT NOT A CHAMPIONSHIP COACH. NOT NEAR THE LEVEL OF SABAN, MILES, FOR HE DOESN’T THE FIRE IN HIM OR THE LEADERSHIP ABILITIES, OR HAVE MEANINGFUL DISCIPLINE OVER HIS PLAYERS. HE IS A LITTLE ABOVE AN AVERAGE COACH AT FAR BETTER THAN AVERAGE SCHOOL.

I just want everyone to know that I find last night’s performance unacceptable. I have devised a two-part plan to address the situation:

Part 1. My entire coaching staff is hereby relieved of it’s duties effective immediately.

Part 2. I, Mark Richt, resign my position as Head Football Coach at the University of Georgia effective Friday October 21, 2011.

I will remain for one week to assist in the transition to a new coaching staff. The upcoming bye week should provide ample time for the University of Georgia administration to replace the entire coaching staff with persons of quality and integrity, capable of maintaining the standards of excellence in the football program that I and my staff have failed to uphold.

Best Regards,
CMR

@ BoZo N. Richt
If you had a clue about college coaching you would know that the number of coaches for each team is limited. You can not just go out and hire a special teams coach even though real morons like you think you can. Oh we could say not have a secondary coach and hire a special teams coach! When you do not have a clue what you are talking about the best thing you can do is SHUT UP!!
