Anyone really feel like celebrating another ugly win over Vandy?

Aaron Murray had a big night against Vandy, but the Georgia offense was inconsistent. (Associated Press)

After Saturday night’s game in Nashville a dispirited Mark Richt sounded like anything but a victorious football coach.

“We’ve got a long way to go,” he said, obviously a very unhappy man.

Yes, Richt acknowledged with Chuck Dowdle’s prompting, Georgia is keeping pace with South Carolina in the SEC East, but he said “we’re kind of limping our way into being tied for first.”

Dowdle, always Mr. Positive, sounded like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Georgia had won its fifth game in a row, fourth conference win in a row, and yet, he said to Richt with a note of surprise in his voice, “you sound disappointed.”

Richt, apparently more in touch with reality than the happy-talk interviewer, answered flatly, “I am disappointed. I’m thankful for the victory … but I’m disappointed in how we played overall.”

Richt had good reason to be downcast. A Vandy team that had only been able to rush for a combined 45 yards in its two previous games racked up 200 against a Georgia defense that previously had appeared to be stout against the run. All night long, Vandy runners had big holes to run through, juked Georgia defenders with cutbacks and slipped through arm tackles.

With Isaiah Crowell essentially a nonfactor after sitting out the first quarter apparently for disciplinary reasons and then looking tentative during his very limited time in the game, with only one really good run, Georgia was one-dimensional on offense. While Aaron Murray had big numbers passing for the night and Marlon Brown finally got a chance to shine with two touchdown catches, the Dogs were not consistent in moving the ball most of the game.

Worst of all, the special teams play again was simply horrendous and almost cost Georgia another game (after playing a big part in the loss to South Carolina).

On the subject of the many special teams miscues — which included falling for yet another fake punt, giving up a kickoff return for a touchdown, two missed field goals and a blocked punt that nearly gave Vandy the game at the end — Richt lamented that they were “too big” to happen and have Georgia still “expect to win in this league. We’re just very fortunate to get out of here alive.”

Yes, a win is win and any kind of road win in the SEC is a good thing. But Saturday night in Nashville the Dogs looked like a team that might be capable of outlasting mediocre opponents but not much more.

The fact that Georgia remains tied for first in the SEC and still has favorable prospects seems more a fluke of scheduling and an off year in the division than a testament to the way the team is playing.

Feel free to share your views on Georgia’s latest ugly win.

Watching this team play is torture..it is a matter of waiting to see what stupid mistake we will make to give the other team a chance. Do we not have a walk-on kicker or anyone else that can kick the dad gum ball in the end zone on a kickoff. All other teams swarm the return man about the 15, we can’t seem to touch one until the 30-35 yard line. I think 5 star means it take 5 of them to equal one with a brain. We need to sign a few smart guys to be thinkers and leaders for all these race horses who can find there way out of the barn

I could see the game unraveling from the TV. Example: GA is 3 & 2 on the Vandy 29 yd line w/ a 5 point lead; instead of running the ball, Bobo decided it would be best to pass for a TD. Result? Vandy intercepted the ball on the 2 yd line. If GA would have run the ball, they would have; A) Kept the clock moving B) Had a chance to get the 1st down C) At the very least moved the ball the the middle of the field to make it a 8-point game. Instead, they gave the ball back to Vandy late in the 4th QTR with only a 5-point lead.
Stupid play calling.
Another thing I called was the blocked punt; With 15 seconds left in the game, going for a blocked punt should have been expected, How stupid is the UGA Special Teams coach???

Been following the DAWGS for a long time…actually graduated from the school… have seen it all.
Don’t like the way the team played last night any more than the rest of you. However, my entire ego and self-esteem are not attached to how UGA plays…. So i don’t get as excited as some of you do about all of this…..

This was a big game for Vandy, their coaches did a good job, they have played lights out at home this year and we kept giving them chances… We were clearly the dominant team but boneheaded plays kept them in the game. Murray still hasn’t played his best game, the run defense took the day off and our special teams were not special…. this is all correctible. Please don’t slit your wrists…. save that for after the FLA game if we lose

I can’t believe the number of Dawg fans who accept the state of this program right now. At the very
best, it is treading water. At the worst, it has slipped to the bottom half of the SEC and is still
dropping. Richt will probably win 8 games and get another year. Another year where mediocrity
is accepted and even rewarded.

The biggest break for Georgia and the dumbest play by Vandy was the pass on first down inside Georgia’s 10 yard line that resulted in an interception. Vandy had been moving the ball on the ground and went away with nothing on an excellent scoring opportunity. A stupid call and bad pass.

It seems that some here know next to nothing about football, but just like to vent. CMR remains one of the best coaches around in the toughest conference in the country. It is fine to huff and puff and demand that he be fired, but whoever replaces him will be far worst. Get real and learn something about football,

Post Munson.

Scott Howard needs to air check himself. He calls plays as actual great plays with great excitement…..and then says “nope he was outah bounds”. He needs to call the game with about a second delay, actually reporting what happens, not what he wishes to happen as a homer….. not that a homer is a bad thing. He early-called two plays in the second half that were drops or our of bounds. I was driving in from the airport and screamed at the radio twice when disappointed by an excited call on a no play. He needs to listen to how foolish it makes him sound when he gets too excited on an early call. I like his voice and he is an exciting play by play man, when he keeps his emotions in check and reports what is happening.

Personally I’m good with Richt’s response. This is no time for smiling fakery – UGA got an ugly win, and there’s no way around it. The special teams are in melt down mode, the running game couldn’t get anything going, penalties out the wazoo, and once again the Dawgs were unable to put away a mediocre team. BUT, it is an SEC W, and they all count. Last year the Dawgs would have found a way to lose this one. This year, they found a way to win, which is what they had to do. Be glad there is a bye week and try to improve and beat the fraking gators. Take it one game at a time. Go Dawgs!

I remember the Vandy game in 2007. We won 20-17 by a field goal at the end (after Darryl Gamble cause a fumble as Vandy was driving to score). We lost to South Carolina that year and the week before the Vandy game we were shellacked by UT. But after we beat Vandy, we went on to beat the Gators, Auburn in a blackout and Hawaii in the bowl game. Maybe we wont do that this year but I’ll take an ugly win any day. And I will never be sick of or “done” with my team.

The reason we can beat UF this year is that they are one of the worst teams in the sec this year.Heck, their Vandy game will be to see if they can make it to a bowl game.I’m guessing they will beat Furman…lol Dawgs should roll it up big BIG!! Am having real mixed emotions. Glad to see the Dawgs get a win, but we sure aren’t playing well. With the talent we have on the team, we should have blown Vandy away. (And you can say that about three or four games every season for the last six or seven years.)
I’m really afraid we’re going to win just enough to save Mark Richt’s job, and though I like Coach Richt..he has NOT done his job over the last several years. And I think it’s time to shake his hand, thank him, and wish him well on his next coaching job.

We were not prepared for the game, Vandy even told us they were faking the punt, and we make no adjustments. When they shifted to overload one side of the line, we should have simply called a time out.

You watch the entire game and blow play after play……………If you are not pizzed off, you have not been paying attention.

I FINALLY have something I can agree with CMR on– this team has a long way to go.

They haven’t beat a good team and won any game of substance in a long time. They’ve done none this season but beat mediocre teams, and even then, won unconvincingly.

If this team doesn’t get it together, losses to FL, Auburn, and GT loom and CMR will be toast.

As per usual, UGA was,,,,undisciplined, uninspired, uncommitted, unprepared and poorly coached.
Punting on fourth down….at midfield…with scant few seconds on the clock makes one question if Coach Richt has ignored all the reality in all the years he has been involved with football. He has a given proclivity for “playing not to lose”…….a very poor strategy for winning football games. If he wished to …” play it safe”…..he could have ‘downed the ball’ on fourth down and turned the ball over to Vandy at mid-field and played “prevent defense” with so little time on the clock. He didn’t do this because he doesn’t possess a mind that is capable of ‘rational game strategies” in difficult games. With the talent on UGA’s football team, any coach in America could have a similar if not better record. Talent without “intelligence” doesn’t go as far as one would like. With an “above average” coach at UGA….Ten years would produce 110 wins and a 7-0 record at this point in our season.
Coach Richt seems to not only lack the intelligence, but also lacks the motivation, coaching skills, and the mental toughness to successfully coach a division 1-A school. His current record reflects the talents of an also-ran coach who is outperformed by his peers nearly every time he takes the field.

And Grantham’s no class is no class.

With Grantham’s example how does Richt expect the team to act both on and off the field?

Coaches should be adults and set the example. Obviously Grantham is not an adult. And a man who cannot control his emotions is a poor excuse for a man.

Georgia deserves better.

Once again, Bobo calls a horrible game. This guy should be in Division III football not with the big boys. His play calling is a complete joke and he is as mentally savy as a 7th grader. It is so frustrating to have someone call plays …..that actually work only to have them immediately stop calling those plays. Scenario 1, we’re running the ball great and then we start throwing the ball subsequently killing the drive. Scenario 2, we’re throwing the ball great and then we start running the ball subsequently killing the drive. If something is working then don’t change it until they stop it. His stupidity kills drives. I hope CMR gets a clue and sees this bum for the incompetent idiot he is. I think everyone can now agree the problem isn’t with the defense but rather with the offense. Yes, there are issues to fix on defense but nothing like the tragedy on the offensive side of the ball. Here’s one simple lesson that Bobo can’t seem to understand…having the ball on a slow matriculating offense that drives the ball down the field is defensive in nature in that it keeps the other team’s offense off the field and our team’s defense off the field. You see theissue is that our defense is out there on the field waaaaay too long. It’s just that simple. Our offense can’t seem to matriculate down the field in small chunks. Instead, we rely on individuals to make big plays. Don’t get me wrong….its nice to have individuals who can do that but isn’t it nicer to have a team do it rather than a handfull of players? I really hope CMR gets a clue and fires this clown soon. BOBO SUCKS!!!! and…he’s ruining CMR’s career.
Oh yeah, I was at the game and we had some Vandy Alumni sitting near us and you would think they would be fairly nice. Nope, the guys sitting near us were completely mean spirited ugly people. I don’t think all of their fans are but the ones we were sitting near were and we weren’t being ugly at all. This one guy had his 10 year old son with him and he broke out in to cursing at this UGA couple sitting behind me. I was very proud that this UGA couple took the high road and pointed out to him that he shouldn’t be talking like that in front of his son. After that point was made the Vandy fan was morally destroyed. His own son was trying to cover up his father’s mouth from saying anything else. I told my wife its always best to take the high road and be nice to people and I’m sure he heard us. I said it loud enough for him to hear us. It was really a great moment for Southern Hospitality…..instead of lowering to the Vandy fan’s level the UGA couple rose above and really showed how to behave in the stadium. I was very proud and if you were there to see and hear it then you would have been too whether you’re a UGA fan or a Vandy fan.

Bottom line. We won. Enough said. Ugly win still has the word win in it. Let’s fix the special teams problems and move forward. We’ve got a lot to play for in a couple of weeks, so let’s look to the positive, which is that the game actually matters.

On another note, cut blocking is quite simply dirty and clearly ought to be scrutinized more closely. The refs let it get out of hand by not penalizing Vandy for dirty blocking during the game. Cut blocking and the types of hits quarterbacks are taking are two things that the SEC could make a big difference in with the rules. It seems to me these issues are much more pressing than the silly celebration before they hit the endzone rule. We’re talking injuries here. The SEC or NCAA needs to act quickly to protect players the way the NFL has.

If anyone had said at the biggining to the year that UGA would finish the regular season 10-2 and play in the SEC championship game, every UGA fan would have excepted that. Now it looks like there is a good chance of that happening and some are still complaning. We did not play well, but we still won on the road in the SEC. The mistakes being made by players are correctable. This team is very young. Even if they lose in the SEC CG and win their bowl game, UGA will start next year ranked in the top 10. Quit complaning and support your team and the coaching staff. All the negativity is not helping, and certainly does not help recruiting.

Sorry Bill. I love Dawg football. Have for over half a century. What I have seen over the last few seasons is not UGA football. In no way, shape or form. It hurts when a win is met with a sigh of relief instead of unbridled excitement. The Vandy victory still feels like a loss to me. I called the punt block. Thought it would be block then scoop for Commodore triumph. Glad I was wrong. Sort of. If it takes loss like that to get Saint Mark Wretch out then so be it. These Dawgs are unmotivated and totally uninspired. Never thought my guys would fall onto par with Vandy. It has happened. Only blindest cannot see change is mandatory for Dawg success. Win out or not! Sigh. :(
