Anyone really feel like celebrating another ugly win over Vandy?

Aaron Murray had a big night against Vandy, but the Georgia offense was inconsistent. (Associated Press)

After Saturday night’s game in Nashville a dispirited Mark Richt sounded like anything but a victorious football coach.

“We’ve got a long way to go,” he said, obviously a very unhappy man.

Yes, Richt acknowledged with Chuck Dowdle’s prompting, Georgia is keeping pace with South Carolina in the SEC East, but he said “we’re kind of limping our way into being tied for first.”

Dowdle, always Mr. Positive, sounded like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Georgia had won its fifth game in a row, fourth conference win in a row, and yet, he said to Richt with a note of surprise in his voice, “you sound disappointed.”

Richt, apparently more in touch with reality than the happy-talk interviewer, answered flatly, “I am disappointed. I’m thankful for the victory … but I’m disappointed in how we played overall.”

Richt had good reason to be downcast. A Vandy team that had only been able to rush for a combined 45 yards in its two previous games racked up 200 against a Georgia defense that previously had appeared to be stout against the run. All night long, Vandy runners had big holes to run through, juked Georgia defenders with cutbacks and slipped through arm tackles.

With Isaiah Crowell essentially a nonfactor after sitting out the first quarter apparently for disciplinary reasons and then looking tentative during his very limited time in the game, with only one really good run, Georgia was one-dimensional on offense. While Aaron Murray had big numbers passing for the night and Marlon Brown finally got a chance to shine with two touchdown catches, the Dogs were not consistent in moving the ball most of the game.

Worst of all, the special teams play again was simply horrendous and almost cost Georgia another game (after playing a big part in the loss to South Carolina).

On the subject of the many special teams miscues — which included falling for yet another fake punt, giving up a kickoff return for a touchdown, two missed field goals and a blocked punt that nearly gave Vandy the game at the end — Richt lamented that they were “too big” to happen and have Georgia still “expect to win in this league. We’re just very fortunate to get out of here alive.”

Yes, a win is win and any kind of road win in the SEC is a good thing. But Saturday night in Nashville the Dogs looked like a team that might be capable of outlasting mediocre opponents but not much more.

The fact that Georgia remains tied for first in the SEC and still has favorable prospects seems more a fluke of scheduling and an off year in the division than a testament to the way the team is playing.

Feel free to share your views on Georgia’s latest ugly win.

We can’t put an average team away. Florida is average….we will have problems with them.
Richt couldn’t beat the Florida Zooker when he was on his way out.

WHEN are we going to recognize the importance of special teams and have a full time special teams coach? We are pathetic. Our boys look lost whenever a team doesn’t just line up in a vanilla package and punt or kick off the ball. Expect Florida,Auburn,Tech and heck even Kentucky and New Mexico State to have fake packages. Even by showing such stuff it throws off our coverage and return games. Grantham’s anger was understandable as Vandy was throwing low blocks at the knees of our line players all night. Several were of the behind the play clip kind that were intended to cause injury. The one on Geathers was way away from the play and intentional injury was its only purpose. Yes its dirty pool but the players have to keep their cool. Getting even is whipping them on the scoreboard, Grantham would best be suited taking his anger out on himself for yet again not having his players finish tackles and defend the halfback pass that Ole Miss had scored on us earlier this year. We will not beat Florida, Auburn or Tech with the mental mistakes and arm tackles our players had against Vandy. Richt is right a lot of work to do and the players need to focus. Its that time of year,

CMR, “…I hate the fact that at the end of a game, we can’t just shake hands like gentlemen and walk off the field like men of integrity…the fact is when the game is over, it’s over. You shake hands…It’s like at the end of a play: when the play is over it’s over, you go to the sideline. And we didn’t do a very good job of that at times…”

Pretty much as simple as that. We lost our composure too often; too many penalties, no matter what another coach or player says, we have to stay focused and composed. Personal fouls show lack of discipline on a player’s part; and can end up costing a game.

CMR, “I am disappointed. I’m thankful for the victory … but I’m disappointed in how we played overall.”
I’m disappointed too: no running game and not stopping the run; not moving the ball at all on our last possession, leading to a blocked punt (and very nearly a winning TD for Vandy). Murray’s personal best day notwithstanding, gotta run the ball and stop the run; a bunch of passing yards doesn’t get it. Hard to figure we can’t run the ball with the biggest O line in the Free World. That and Murray being pressured on most plays. Instead of so many blaming CMB, how ’bout Will Friend?
Heck yes I’m glad we won; but it sho was ooooglee.
OkieDawg…CMR’s flippant comments are wearing thin…” Not all dirty laundry needs to aired to the public. Actually, from Crowell’s point of view in particular, it might have been a classy comment by not calling him out in public, keeping it in the family. Some things are just none of our business.

I’ve never been on this website but some things should be obvious.

Crowell’s hurt and has been playing banged up for weeks. Similarly Samuel is hurt. One problem for us is that we have no depth at that position. One thing I’m not doubting this season is the heart and mental toughness of our dawgs.

I also agree with others that our special teams play looked bad. I was also similarly surprised that our defense against the run looked like it did. Similarly our offensive line seems to be hit or miss when it comes to making holes for our run game.

Some things folks post I can agree with. Georgia is a relatively young team and in comparison to last year there is a change. They are finding ways to win games they are supposed to win and those that are close. Last year they were finding ways to lose the close ones.

I like this team better than last season’s. I think Richt is a good coach. I DO think our bulldogs need to start finding ways to beat the big teams again. The last couple season’s whenever we walk into a fight with a ranked team, we haven’t pulled out with a win. We do need more of that killer instinct. Game ain’t over til it’s over.

Young team? yes. Beat up team? probably. But none of that factors into the final score. You either win or loose. According to most accounts we’re dripping with talent. Why can’t we play up to our potential? I think it’s because CMR plays “not to loose” instead of “playing to win”.

Yes, I am proud of any SEC win. South Carolina is not coasting either. Has anyone even considered that when Vandy put the Rodgers kid in, they were a much better team and we had not practiced for a scrambling, hard nosed guy like him? Even if we did, he is a winner and will try to find ways to win. We were able to stop it in the end. Be proud to be a Bulldog!

I have no inside knowledge, just a dawgs fan with another opinion.
Richt said it was a “coach’s decision” to hold IC out of the 1st quarter. His toughness was never challanged in high school. While he has shown he is a fantastic runner, he has not shown toughness. he has pulled himself out repeatedly this year in tough situations when we needed him out there. earlier in the year I kept wondering why we were pulling him but after paying close attention I realized he was requesting to come out. Late in the 1st half of the Tenn game I did the rewind thing on the DVR and you could read Richts lips as IC came out; He said “your coming out???” dropped his head and shook it from side to side as crowell came off the field. My opinion is he was sending a message for him to MAN UP. you have to play through some physical pain when you get to big boy football.

just my opinion,

Where do I start—Take your pick—-

1) Special Team–We had a little bit of everything there–
A) Missed Field Goals
B) Give up another FAKE PUNT
C) Give up a TD on a KICKOFF RETURN
D) Give up a BLOCKED PUNT with 10 SECONDS left in the game.

I THINK OUR SPECIAL TEAMS HIT FOR THE CYCLE LAST NIGHT

2) When is our OFFENSIVE LINE going to pickup a blitz? A.M. is getting beat up every game. Please OFFENSIVE LINE BLOCK SOMEONE.

3) What happen to our RUN DEFENSE last night, did they stay home & they did give up another TD on a trick play..

4) Our defensive & special teams should get ready for a lot of trick plays the rest of the season because we have proven that we cannot stop those kind of plays especially with Florida,Auburn & GT remaining on our schedule.

4) Thank God we don’t play Alabama,LSU & Arkansas this year

The win over Vandy was ugly. Perhaps it was what the Dawgs needed at this point to let them know they can’t ease up and cruise into the SEC championship game. They have next week off before they face the Gators, and that will be a critical time for injuries to heal and attitudes to be adjusted.

Bill, I think your article really sums it up. We got outta there with a win and with Florida losing and South Carolina needing OT to beat Miss State, we are still in this SEC East race.

I thought this game reminded me A LOT of the Colorado game last year. Same time of year, playing on the road in a small stadium against a team with inferior athletes, same color scheme for opponents, and Georgia definately played down to the level of our competition.

Obviously, the big difference was that we lost at CU and we won at VU, but a last second fumble cost us the game at Colorado and a last second tackle by our punter saved a victory at Vanderbilt. While I saw some signs that our team has improved over the last few weeks, I didn’t see any difference between our play at CU last year and our play at VU this year. That scares the hell out of me.

Florida coming in off of THREE STRAIGHT LOSSES. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Yes we are mediocre now, but I think we are passing through mediocre on our way from worse to better and hopefully best. The defense did struggle some but give Rodgers his due! Defense overall has made great strides in a year and a half. We have 2 freshmen receivers who can catch, a running back that has brought some hope and excitement back. I’m not thrilled with Murray, but we are slowly getting things right again. I’m glad we did not get overconfident and have this game against the Gators! Maybe we got the wake up we needed. Hope Mitchell is well. He, Brown And Bennett are giving me hope.

Many obviously younger fans write about Dawg fans’ yearning for the days of old and wonder why such yearnings. Discipline. Performance. Personal quality of players…and coaches. Defense. Victories. Off-the-field behavior (not perfect but compared to today…), and fans that stayed to the end. Did I mention victories? Victories are much better than simple wins. Victory of Vandy was the simplest or, more appropriately, the cheapest.

Here’s UGA needs to do.

1) Released Mr.Richt and let Todd Gratham take over.(Grantham came to uga to win championships-Mr.Richt did not) This move will save millions.

2) Keep Mike Bobo and the rest of the staff-Grantham need to run a power-I offense and pass only when needed.
3) If Todd Grantham can’t get it done after 2 seasons try hiring Chris Petersen or Kirby Smart.

Every team has bad games. Even Bama, LSU, Florida, Auburn, and South Carolina, if you look back at everyone of the Championship seasons of Bama, LSU, Florida, and Auburn, they all had bad games against teams that they were suppose to blow out, winning is what counts, even when its an ugly win, what’s different this year, is they are winning those games, not like last year, in which we would have lost these games.

This may be one of the ugliest wins eYe can remember. Lucky is an understatement. We could and should have shut the door on Vandy but didn’t. Offense sputters and defense almost gave in. Yes, it’s a “W” in the record column but we are not a good football team. The running game lacks focus, the OL appears to be knee deep in concrete, special teams sure aren’t special for us and red zone opportunities are wasted. Murray may have had a few plays turn out but overall did not impress me. The Crowell kid is our only chance as a running back but apparently can;t cut it yet.. Our place kicker has shown yet again to be as inconsistent as the offense. eYe am a UGA fan and pull for them every game but we are just not a good, solid team. The games speak for themselves. On another note, VIRGINIA BEAT GT!!!!!!!! As discouraged as eYe sometimes get about UGA, Richt and things, at least we haven’t let a team on the scale of VIRGINIA beat us. eYe love every minute of it too!!!!! UGA escaped defeat by an eyelash but VIRGINIA BEAT GT!!!!!!!!! BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No reason to celebrate such an ugly win. If UGA REALLY feels that it is championship material – they would be rolling-up scores like AL and LSU – of which those two teams did yesterday against opponents UGA has already played – but barely beat. UGA is only fortunate because of their cream-puff schedule after their 1st 2 games. Yes – UGA has won 5 in a row – but against WHO? Those 5 teams are 1-13. Wow – says a lot about uga.

Couldnt Score a TD in the 2nd half against a terrible Ole Miss and Miss ST team
Scored only one TD in 1 quarter against a sorry Tenn team and had to hold on all day for victory
And then barely won against the SEC BEST FOOTBALL PROGRAM ever in Vanderbilt

Lets see; when we beat a SORRY FL team in two weeks that has a new coach

I could really care less about winning the SEC East this year and I’m tired of hearing about it. Let’s just play the games and let the chips fall where they may. If we win it great. It would be a lot of fun to play in the SECCG again (until Trent Richardson breaks 100 yards rushing midway through the 2nd quarter. Then it won’t be so fun anymore), but this season should not be judged by an SEC East title. The way South Carolina is playing it wouldn’t at all surprise me if we limped in to the SEC title game with 8-4 regular season record. Would anybody be excited about that? I sure as hell wouldn’t. Let’s just try to win the games in front of us and stop talking about winning the lousy SEC East. It just wreaks of desperation.

Thanks.

Anybody considered that every team has a DUD game, even the great ones? How do upsets happen? The favorite plays poorly and the underdog rises up and plays the game of their life. How does the great Alabama defense give up 28 points to Auburn after being up 24-0. IT HAPPENS. The Dawgs escaped their DUD. They tackled poorly. They couldn’t run the football and still won. We have a makeshift O-line that has very little chemistry. We still won. I’ll reserve the lynch the coaching staff comments until after the Florida game. If we lose and look bad doing it Richt is toast. I am a Dawg fan, win lose or draw. I endured the Goff years. These past couple of years are nowhere near that bad. It was a DIRTY game all around. The only reason( I can think of) Kwame didn’t get ejected for throwing a punch was because he got his knee taken out from behind while engaged with another blocker on the opposite side of the field from the play. Going back and watching it, it was glaringly obvious that they were trying to injure our defenders every snap. The ref’s let that game get out of control, then immediately ran for the exit as time expired.
