Anyone really feel like celebrating another ugly win over Vandy?

Aaron Murray had a big night against Vandy, but the Georgia offense was inconsistent. (Associated Press)

After Saturday night’s game in Nashville a dispirited Mark Richt sounded like anything but a victorious football coach.

“We’ve got a long way to go,” he said, obviously a very unhappy man.

Yes, Richt acknowledged with Chuck Dowdle’s prompting, Georgia is keeping pace with South Carolina in the SEC East, but he said “we’re kind of limping our way into being tied for first.”

Dowdle, always Mr. Positive, sounded like he couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Georgia had won its fifth game in a row, fourth conference win in a row, and yet, he said to Richt with a note of surprise in his voice, “you sound disappointed.”

Richt, apparently more in touch with reality than the happy-talk interviewer, answered flatly, “I am disappointed. I’m thankful for the victory … but I’m disappointed in how we played overall.”

Richt had good reason to be downcast. A Vandy team that had only been able to rush for a combined 45 yards in its two previous games racked up 200 against a Georgia defense that previously had appeared to be stout against the run. All night long, Vandy runners had big holes to run through, juked Georgia defenders with cutbacks and slipped through arm tackles.

With Isaiah Crowell essentially a nonfactor after sitting out the first quarter apparently for disciplinary reasons and then looking tentative during his very limited time in the game, with only one really good run, Georgia was one-dimensional on offense. While Aaron Murray had big numbers passing for the night and Marlon Brown finally got a chance to shine with two touchdown catches, the Dogs were not consistent in moving the ball most of the game.

Worst of all, the special teams play again was simply horrendous and almost cost Georgia another game (after playing a big part in the loss to South Carolina).

On the subject of the many special teams miscues — which included falling for yet another fake punt, giving up a kickoff return for a touchdown, two missed field goals and a blocked punt that nearly gave Vandy the game at the end — Richt lamented that they were “too big” to happen and have Georgia still “expect to win in this league. We’re just very fortunate to get out of here alive.”

Yes, a win is win and any kind of road win in the SEC is a good thing. But Saturday night in Nashville the Dogs looked like a team that might be capable of outlasting mediocre opponents but not much more.

The fact that Georgia remains tied for first in the SEC and still has favorable prospects seems more a fluke of scheduling and an off year in the division than a testament to the way the team is playing.

Feel free to share your views on Georgia’s latest ugly win.

We beat Vandy, UT, Ole Miss and Miss St.. These teams currently have an SEC record of 1W-13L. And that lone win, a victory by Vandy over Ole Miss. Am I celebrating a narrow win over Vandy? Not hardly, we barely escape with a win over another inept opponent. Why would we be happy about our 4 wins? Let’s just thank the states of MS and TN for fielding the worst teams in the SEC.

AFD — Last year we kept it close in every game but lost a lot of the ones we should have won. This year we’re winning the games we should win — definitely an improvement. The freshmen from the Dream Team are standing up and proving themselves. The upper classmen who stuck it out are playing with heart (unlike the ones who left did last year) and are showing great leadership. As much as you might hate it — this program is on the rise again. True, the team has it flaws — but so does very team. All I asked for before the season started was that the players play with heart and never give up (which were big problems last year). This team is playing with a lot of heart and I’m proud of them. The coaches are also utilizing their talent pool more effectively this year — even playing defensive stars on offense (they didn’t do that enough last year). So, Alabama or LSU we might not be yet — but we’re building and moving in the right direction again. The coaches need to be more aggressive and fix the special teams and this star studded team will continue to rise — TBTG.

No offense to Vandy, but think about this column title for a second. If your a team who has aspirations to get back to 10+ win seasons and SEC championships, how do you ever begin to celebrate a win over Vandy? Vandy has always seemed to play UGA tough. It never seems to be the blowout everyone thinks it should be. Vandy isnt the type of opponent you celebrate winning on like you’ve stepped up in the world. You celebrate the fact you didnt manage to screw up and lose to a team you should beat. I think UGA overlooked them a bit. The switch to Rogers at QB caught the D planning off guard. They played sloppy, but didnt blow the game. A win is a win in this case. Just taking care of business…leave it at that.

Another thing. UGA might need to hire a special teams coach…a for real special teams coach. Its obvious they are ill prepared as they nearly blew this game. A TD runback, another converted fake punt on them that led to another TD for Vandy, and a punt blocked at the end which could have been a total disaster. Let’s not forget letting a 260+ defensive lineman run a fake punt in for a TD in the South Carolina game which was huge in a close game. They let Ole Miss run a punt back for a TD too. This is absurd. This needs fixing worse than Bobo and his antics. At least the offense still put up 33. Without the special teams mistakes, Vandy isnt ever close in this game.

Oh yeah. I forgot to mention Rambo going about eight feet in the air to knock that pass away in the endzone with :07 left. HUGE p;ay. Butler’s game saving tackle. HUGE play. Also, Crowell picked up a blitzing Vandy corner and held his block on one of the touchdown passes. HUGE block. This game will look much better in hindsight. Especially if we beat Florida (who doesn’t seem to have such a hot conference record this year either) and then Florida would be so kind as to do us a favor and beat a Lattimore-less USC.

The “win is a win” fans are tolerant of mediocrity. That is exactly what our program is right now, mediocre. It has been that way for a number of years now. When was the last time UGA upset another team? Think about it, a long time. Tonight’s game was the status quo.

UGA will lose against Fla. and Richt should be shown the door. The team looks like crap. With the way this team plays, they will never beat a top 10 opponent. Richt has no fire. He won’t even back up his players and coaches. CTG has the fire and probably should be the HC. The East is very weak and UGA is beginning to look even weaker. The West has the better coaches and it shows every week. UGA needs to a make a change and make it with a big time coach. The O, the D, and the special teams looked awful against a lesser opponent. If you know your offense looks like crap, why not take over the OC duties and fire Bobo? This stupid. Your loyalty should lie with the players and the university. Bobo will cause him to lose his job.

“Tied for 1st place” – what a total typical load of HOGWASH from our dispirited from birth head coach, when NEITHER South Carolina nor Georgia have beat anyone; and neither teams’ opponents all season long have beat ANYONE either. Sloppiest football game of all-time. The # 116 offense in the nation, if our Defense had not hit Jordan Rodgers’ arm on the last play, had a wide-open receiver in the right corner of the end zone to beat us, while of course, Vandie’s Defense is not in the Top 25 either. Like we remain for the 3rd Consecutive Year. Why should it be a surprise that we aren’t viewed as doing well ?

“Without the special teams mistakes, Vandy isnt ever close in this game.”

Are you suggesting that this sport is not a team sport and that the team was not PITIFUL ? This game was sealed at the beginning of the game. We started out slowly against a CUPCAKE and then at the end FIZZLED OUT altogether. We watched a team who absolutely have no offense, DOMINATE our defense. We watched our offense, once again, come out unprepared with yet again MORE SUSPENDED players the coaching staff HIDES FROM US, or tries to – and this offense just could not do a thing. Richard Samuel ? He was great ? I must have been watching a different game from you, sir. I haven’t witnessed Richard Samuel great in 1 game as a Bulldog.

Aaron Murray’s Offense

SETTLED

for

6 FIELD GOALS vs a CUPCAKE. Without settling for 6 field goals, this game is a blow-out. There now I feel better; I just figured out the perfect answer to Georgia winning 5 straight games and not being ranked at all for the 3rd Consecutive Season, you saying the special teams is all that kept Vandie in the game. Look, Vandie sucks and so do we.

Excellent piece Bill….I’m afraid what we saw last night is more indictive of where our team is. Tons of talent just a little misguided. Something is missing. We thought we might be knocking on the door of greatness but I would contend we are still climb out of mediocrity. Richt isn’t doing a great job this year. Should have beaten every team on our schedule, except Boise, comfortably. We give SC the game on a silver platter, Ole Miss hangs around, Miss St. is punchless but we allow them to just hang around, Tennessee is within a score late and should not have been, and now this Vanderbilt game. Arghhhhhh Another glaring problem is back…penalties and the big kind…Geathers should have been ejected for the punch late to the Vandy lineman. We have to be more disiplined than this. Crowell suspended, Shawn Williams late hit, what the heck was Grantham doing at the end of the game…embarrassing!!!!!

This is how we play!!! We have played like this for many years!!! We will never put away teams!!! We play everybody close and games we should dominate never happens. Talent alone has won the games we have won the last 5 years!!! We get outcoached in every game!!! Rumor has it that the Gaytors will go ahead and let us win so we want fire Richt. They would like to keep him around so that they don’t have to worry about us winning the east. Sounds like great coaching by Muschamp.

The only SEC game that the last 4 teams we played one is when one of them played another. The respect for Richt is gone. The coaches are totally unprepared. They won’t even admit how the special teams coaching is done though it is apparently just an afterthought. Other teams look at the Georgia coaches and players as dumb and know they can always trick them. A lot of atheletic talent and no brains

I feel like celebrating a ugly win or any type of win over the opponent. They now have a much needed week off to heal some nicks and get ready to play Florida. Ask them if they would have taken an ugly win over Auburn. Ask any team if an ugly win is better than a loss.
Somehow, Bill, I think you must be a closet tech. Fan. You seldom have much positive to say about UGA. UGA may not have been on their top game last night, but they won. A lot of teams in all venues of sports, do not win pretty every time, but a W is still more desirable than a L. Teams have to win and learn how to win ugly sometimes. It is human nature that sometimes, the effort, or strength is not there but the sign of a good team and players, is that ability to still come out on top. These young DAWGS are starting to show, even in a game like last night, that they are a team, and they are only going to learn from this game, and keep improving. I for one, am proud of these young folks and I think they have a bright future ahead of them.

Lack of discipline, on and off the field. Stupid play-calling. Poor preparation. No focus. No intensity, no killer instinct. This is what we have become. I’m frankly surprised that people don’t run trick plays and fake punts on us every other down, since we always seem totally unprepared for them. We may well beat the Gators in two weeks if we can get everybody healthy, and we may win the depleted East, but that will be a hollow victory, a win based on talent alone. Unless we develop some sense of discipline and an ability to understand the concept of team football, and unless we can string together four quarters of intense, take-no-prisoners play that is commensurate with our level of talent, either LSU or Alabama will expose us for the frauds we are in the SECCG.

And then what? Will the talent finally stop coming? What then?

SEC Follies

October 16th, 2011
8:42 am

Serious Dawg fans need to start organizing and demanding that Richt be fired. Otherwise, sports writers will be asking the same questions this time a year from now.

Richt represents mediocrity. Saban, Miles, Spurrier, and Chizik represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship would be at least 50:1.

Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it.

As they say in poker, “Read ‘em and weep.”

I’ll take a win any day. We have plenty of talent and make a lot of big plays. We were in position to put the game away in the second half, but, Vandy played an inspired game and our special teams were as Bill aptly noted “horrendous.” Florida has dominated us for a long time and will be highly motivated. We should be, as well. Having two weeks to prepare is a big plus and we will have no excuse for losing to a struggling UF.

It;s beyond me how anyone can think we can ever be a champioship team again with this coaching staff. Respect for Richt is gone. There is no discipline with players or coaches. Our team plays with no fire or emotion. We are consistently outcoached. The players on the field often seem clueless. The only two half way decent teams we’ve played this year beat us.
