Dawgs need to take care of business against Vandy

If Mike Bobo isn't in "ball control" mode by the third quarter, Georgia will be in trouble. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Playing Vanderbilt in Nashville Saturday is one of those “no respect” situations for Mark Richt’s Georgia Bulldogs.

UGA is expected to win over the SEC’s designated jabroni, but other than notching another East Division victory it’s not going to do the Dogs much good in terms of getting back into that elusive national spotlight. If beating Tennessee in Knoxville couldn’t get the Dogs into the Top 25, it’s hard to see a win over Vandy accomplishing that feat.

Let’s face it, if the Dogs win big, as could certainly happen against a Commodores team that’s gone two games without scoring a touchdown, the reaction will be, “So what? It’s only Vanderbilt.”

Should Georgia struggle any against a decent Vandy defense, which does lead the country in interceptions with 14, it will merely reinforce the image of the Dogs as a team that can’t put away a lesser opponent.

And if the Georgia offense, defense and special teams all were to suffer an improbable implosion and the Dores somehow got one of their occasional wins in this series, well, things would get awfully ugly in Athens.

That’s not very likely, though. Probably what we’ll see Saturday is Georgia get up by two or three scores and then Mike Bobo will hand the game to Todd Grantham to finish off. And in this instance that shouldn’t draw many fan complaints. This isn’t a game where you want Georgia’s starters still on the field in the fourth quarter.

So what would I like to see Saturday while the first string is in the game? Aaron Murray and Tavarres King finally getting their timing right and connecting on a couple of long balls would be nice. Isaiah Crowell having a solid day while not getting any more banged up would be good, too. And backup QB Hutson Mason getting some playing time would be good for him as a player and also would mean the game is well in hand. Defensively, I’d just like to see Georgia continue the progress it’s shown in every game since that dismal opener in the Dome.

No one should pretend to be excited about a win over Vandy. But if the Dogs come out ready to play and take care of business, Georgia fans should be happy … even if it doesn’t impress anyone else.

A win in the SEC is still a win. And coming out of the game without any injuries will only be a plus. Take care of Vandy and turn your attention to the Gaytors. I’m tired of hearing them yap. Go Dawgs!

In my humble opinion, at this point polls don’t matter at all. Most would argue perception or whatever, but the goal is a chance to win the SEC.

I’m good with winning the remaining of our games 3-0 with Murray throwing 54347 INTs and the defense giving up 83433577863 yards. All that matters is the W. In the immortal words of Al Davis “Just win baby!”

If we win the rest of our games that puts us in a position to play in the SEC championship and THAT’S the goal. Being ranked in the top 5,10,15 or whatever would be icing on the cake and probably a byproduct of playing for the SEC Championship.

Even though we would most likely get killed, I’ll always prefer at least a chance to win the title then winning 56-0 over Vandy.

Vandy is aggressively recruiting the state of Georgia and making inroads. Therefore, CMR and the Dawgs should make every effort to administer a beat down on Vandy. Bobo should keep his foot on the gas instead of dangerously sitting on leads. Murray also has to take care of the ball given Vandy’s ability to intercept and his propensity to get wild with the ball.

The game is in Nashville at night and they will be amped up

I say play it close to the vest and let the defense do their thing and don’t turn the ball over

It would be nice to get up 14-0 or 21-0 and let Mason play with the 1st teamers.

I expect Vandy’s coach to try and get real creative on offense because they won’t be able to just line up and drive downfield on us in a traditional way. Look for lots of trick stuff and misdirection to try and get us out of position. They will probably throw it 40 times.

I say 27-10 Dawgs

Jan Kemp was a deeply disturbed woman who led a life to which no rational human being would aspire. Consider: two suicide attempts, once by pills and once by stabbing herself multiple times in the chest with a butcher knife. She spent stretches in psychiatric wards and went to jail for almost a year for contempt of court. The rumors out there are much, much worse. But really, you don’t need to get into any of the rumor and innuendo to conclude that this woman had serious problems. Actually, given the climate in Athens in the early 80s, you’d have to be crazy to call out UGA on academic preferences for football players. That may be proof enough right there that she was nuts.

Bill, you are probably right. “Get up by a couple of touchdowns and hand it off to Grantham”. I believe this “sit on the lead mentality” wastes valuable “practice” time against a real opponent. What’s wrong with, as you indicate putting in Mason, letting him get in some game experience with other non-starters. Why waste an opportunity to build game tested depth? Also the fans pay to see a full game not 1/2 game. It’s a lot more aggressive to put teams away than to go try keep them from coming back.

The dawgs D is playing well and should be able to stop Vandy’s run game. If Vandy has to pass look for the dawgs to get some int’s provided there’s enough pressure on their QB. It’s Vandy’s defensive backfield and LB’s that may give Murray fits if he’sot careful w/the ball. If GA can run the ball effectively and mix in a few well placed passes should be enough to minimize pick’s by the vandy D. Throw into a crowd and that could be trouble for GA.

GA should come out of nashville w/a W but more important no major injuries going into the FL game.

The O doesn’t need to hand the game over to CTG. If they can put up 100 points they need to do it to get this offense in sync. They don’t need to sit on the ball, they need to get some kind of rhythm going. There should be no INTs come Sat.. Murray needs to eliminate the stupid decisions and stop overthrowing WRs and since he is still here, Bobo needs to get the playcalling down. The OL needs to establish themselves better. They are the biggest OL in college football and now they need to become a very physical OL. The D is playing well but, still needs to be more physical and play more in the opponents backfield.

Of course our luck in not playing Alabama, LSU and Arkansas in the regular season means we’ll likely meet Alabama or LSU in the Dome. how many cupcakes… Let’s think about what you are saying as it is related to football
1.) SEC (southeastern conference) has to play everyteam on that side (or division play as most would call it) which includes USCe Tenn Vandy Kentucky Fla. Coastal Carolina is the 1 of two sub bowl teams we are playing this year.
2.) Everyteam has to play 3 Conference teams from the other side of the division (west side) UGA always plays Aubarn, and it just so happens UGA got “lucky”** with Ole Miss and Miss State
(**)- the Miss teams were scheduled a couple years back. Idiot. ( I believe Miss State was a beast last year – I bet my bottom dollar you would not have called Miss State a “CupCake” before year start)
3.) Go ahead and look at what sub bowl teams the rest of the SEC play (not including LSU)
4.) though UGA didn’t win… THEY SCHEDULED BOISE STATE…. cupcake, I think not
so before you let all that football “knowledge” spew out of your mouth you may want to talk to your daddy about how a mans sport is played because it is apparent you don’t know anything

13 NATIONAL TITLES – 22 SEC TITLES!!!

Good article Bill – but you miss the point on something.

Your Win Loss record is the #1 priority in you ranking – not necessarly who you play.
If UGA beats Vandy – and is 5-2 – they will move up and over any ranked team that suffers their 3rd loss.

It seems schedule only matters when pollsters are ranking teams from conferences other than theirs.
For example:
Who has Michigan played this year?
Who has GT played this year?

You could play 3 top 5 teams – and lose all 3 – yet still be a top 10 team in the literal sense.
However, by the end of the season – you are still viewed as a 3 loss team – with many inferior teams rated ahead of you due to an easier schedule.

Just how it works.

So the best thing for each school to do – is to do what Florida does – and all teams do to an extent – focus on your conference – and do not schedule a potential loss OOC.

Florida plays FSU every year.
Georgia plays Tech every year.

I get tired of reading that UGA or Tech or Bama or Florida playing weak OOC schedules by the critics. Yet, who does Ohio State play OOC? Who does Texas play OOC?

Sure, every once in a while schools will schedule a great game – Texas/Ohio State. But more often than not – this does not happne – and for good reason.
1. Focus on conference schedule
2. OOC is for tune ups and rest for conference games.
3. The more wins you have – the higher you are ranked.

The only ONE possession in question was at around 8 minute and that started with one of our staple plays.(4 yrd gain) The 2nd down got stuffed but that was also a play that we had been running with success all night. - agree with you that UGA had the team to win a NT in 2007/08.
- UGA really clicked mid season and on. Would have beaten LSU in the SEC Title game.
- enjoyed Hawaii beat down – expecially after the ESPN announcers picked Hawaii and Colt Brennan.

Also – 2002 team was good enough to win a NT.
Issue that year was the OK and USC were both ranked ahead fo UGA in preseason polls – and went undefeated. I am convinced UGA would have beaten both Ohio State and Miami that year.

Issue for that year was Florida – and the Shockley pick 6 – the difference in the game won by Florida.
For all those crying for Hutson Mason getting playing time – remember the Shockley pick 6 – which ultimately left UGA out of the NT game that year.

Gosh Luke, you’re right. I mean, Vandy is practically at LSU’s level all of a sudden. I mean, look at all the TDs they have had the last two games and look at all the points UGA’s defense has given up in that same span. The argument of “well this team beat that team by X amount of points but that team only won by Y amount of points” never holds any water. UGA wasn’t picked by many on these blogs to beat UT in KNOXVILLE, but they did and now most of the doubters still won’t give them a plug nickel worth of credit by saying, well, who has UT beat in the SEC. Guess what, UGA added to that 0 for UT.

Its hard to believe UGA is only an 11 point favorite in this game. Anything less then a 21 point victory would be pretty embarrassing. Vandy is pretty much an FCS school hiding in a major conference.

Murray giving away point has always been in tight games that I remember. With 2-3 score lead they usually go pretty conservative so that’s not a big risk. (isnt that the whole idea) You really can’t relate the 2 different situations.

What I am trying to say is it is not a given that we will beat ANYONE and for any Dawg fan to think otherwise need only take a look at the past couple of years. Yes- I wholeheartedly agree, things look very good BUT we have gone down that road before. 13 NATIONAL TITLES – 22 SEC TITLES!!

LawDawg – well – if you are a lawyer – I will not argue!

But you have to admit, troll is usually reserved for those that spout the negative!

This is not a UGA blog – it is an open blog in the AJC that focusses on UGA – all are welcome to comment.

Hey – for those want to fire Coach Richt – HERE IS ONE FOR YOU!!!!

There was a coach in the SEC that took over a struggling SEC program.
The first few years – the team was mediocre winning 5 games, then 7 games, then 8 games.
Then his team got on a roll and he his team had double digit win seasons with and occaisional 9 win season for several years.
However – his 9th season – his team won 8 games, followed by another 8 win season, then followed by a 6 win season – and the NATIVES got restless.

Then – the coach had ANOTHER 6 win season – the NATIVES were ready to run this poor coach out of town:
– Several other SEC teams passed him by.
– Recruiting was suffering
– His staff changes were not as effective.
– They hated his OC.

Sound familiar???

Can you name the coach???

Well – here is the rest of the story:
He went on to coach at the same school of 12 more seasons – and was incredibly successfull – winning seaveral conference and national titles along the way.
His name was Paul “Bear” Bryant.

Here is my point – be carefull of what you wish for.
Richt is a solid HC – a great representitve to your University.
UGA hit a down cycle – like all programs do – and all coaches do for several reasons:
– recruits did not work out
– coaching maybe got stale
– attrition in coaching – replacements have to install systems

I see Coach Richt changing it up – and letting some players go that are not invested in the program.
I see a UGA team that has not given up this year – despite a humbling start.
I see a UGA team – that will be ranked top 20 by seasons end – and potentially top 15.
I see a program that is fighting to get better – yet has a work to do.
I see a program on the rise – but just not sure how high they will go.

What would have happened to ALABAMA football is all the “EXPERTS” got their way and fired Coach Bryant. No Telling – but I doubt the program would have been as successfull.

Richt is not Bryant – but if UGA can be patient – this guy will turn the ship.

ROLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL TIDE!!!!

First I wanna say Bama Stan, you seem to be a student of football and enjoy reading your posts.
The does have a great D and will slow down the passing game. But they dont have a way of scoring against the Dawgs. I see the Dawgs winning 28-6. The Dawgs should make it to the dome. I see SC losing to UT or Ark and possibly UF. As UGA gets better each week, SC seems to get worse. Maybe Shaw will help them wake up, but I hope not. UGA will be ranked if they beat UF, (23) and rise to around 19 after AU. Bat Tech down and UGA moves to 14. Make the SEC title game close and rise to 10. Beat a Bama/ LSU team and move to 5. BUT STILL..NO WAY TO REACH A NC GAME. BUT..given the improvement and the Dawgs could have a team 10-3 going bowling..against a Boise team!! GO Dawgs!!!

Vanderbilt will provide a good challenge for our offense. We should be able to measure the progress of the offense. It would be nice to see some good run blocking and as stated it would be nice to see Aaron hit King deep over the middle. The defense should be able to improve their stats but I’m not sure it will be a big challenge. I would like to see a good pass rush up front and then our incredibly gifted secondary and LBs should have a field day with interceptions. Brandon and Branden should have a big day returning punts. It would also be good to see what Marshall can do fielding and returning punts. He could make a boring game a little more exciting.

TENN- Are you joking? do you watch football? UGA owned that game. they gave Tenn the worst 3rd down conversion rate of the year (really the worst since Tyler Bray Started at QB)
Coastal Caro- yea, did what we were “supposed” to do
South Car- The Offense gift wrapped that one to the Def. UGAs D was pretty darn good in that game.
Statistics are nice but watching the games is where you make the smartest opinion of a team. The final score and the stats don’t always tell who really ran the game.
So, in point, you wanna compare Ole miss playing Vandy to Ole Miss playing UGA. I don’t know about you.. but if I was Ole Miss coach I would have worked a lot harder to prep against UGA (Silly I know) + I believe UGA slowed down the horses and just ran the ball in the 2nd half. WOW!! Whatever you are smoking i want some of it. This UGA offense want get up on any decent SEC defense by 2 or 3 t.d’s., Not with Bobo and Murray running the show. Especially without M.M, this team will be lucky to score 17 points on Vandy. The only good thing for UGA is that Vandy’s offense is as bad as the other 3 SEC teams UGA has beaten. UGA still hasn’t beaten a decent team, and the 3 SEC teams they have beaten, haven’t won a single SEC game between them One other note, Vandy leads the nation in INT”S, so Murray will make sure Vandy stays in this game until the 4th qt, if UGA even wins the game. UGA has not been impressive against anyone offensively, and Vandy will make them look like the average offense they are. If UGA is ahead and has a chance to put this team away, they sure had better, because it will be the last time they have a chance to put anyone away among FL, Auburn and Tech. I look for UGA to lose all 3 of those games, and Murray will prove once again that he can’t beat a team with a winning record. The misery will continue in Athens, especially with this recruting class. UGA will only get farther behind the Bama’s LSU’s, and Florida in talent. Give Richt 3 more years, and watch how far down the SEC ladder UGA falls.

If GT wins out, the only wins the pollsters will look at are Clemson and UGA and maybe an iffy VT team (they usually are iffy). Compare that to how pollsters LOVE to say things like “well, look how Wisconsin did against Nebrasks, Mich St, Illinois, Penn St and OSU” .. not saying they are right, but look how OSU got into back to back NC games against UF and LSU despite playing what we all knew was a pansy schedule just to get their clocks cleaned by the SEC both times.

That sorry excuse for an offense that we have and you like to defend cost us the Boise game.

The sorry conservative playcalling of run draw up the middle more times than I could count, sideline pass after sideline pass with 3 and out kept the defense out too long and they capitalized in the third Qtr

When we got too far behind then the play book once again opened up throwing downfield to our TE and Mitchell

Then when we play sorry teams like Ole Miss and Miss ST we open it up then when we get a decent lead we go to running the clock out and almost let the team back into the game i.e. Ol Miss

Do this against Tech and they will beat us

I could care less about “national exposure.” Make it to the SEC championship game and there will be plenty of exposure.

Whether it is by 1 or 50, just win the darn game.

To the poster who complained about the offense shutting it down in the fourth quarter. That is how you win the game. Eat the clock and play good defense. DUH!!!!!!! Who cares about “the fans paying good money?” I’m sure the fans would rather see a well executed strategy that includes a W, then see us throw pick-6s and allow the other team back into the game. Points-

> UGA takes Vandy and I do think we need Mason in the game. Not just to get some snaps though. Murray obvioiusly has skills but not shure he has that “leader… fire up the troups toughness”. Mason has great reports from coaches and me thinks the offense might step it up a notch and rally around Mason just as a new spark. Love Murray, but I think we shoud give Mason a meaningful play time look. Should have had him in 3rd and 4th Q Vs Miss State.

> I think we beat Vandy handily and then come thru with the big W against the gators. They are down a bit but looked good in their first few W’s. Auburn is the one that scares me. I know they got handled by Arky and the D is in shambles, but it is Auburn, it is in Athens, and you know how that series goes. I think the timing is prime for a letdown if we get thru V, F, & NM with the W’s. Guess we start worrying about AU in 4-5 weeks though.

I kind of agree with that a one loss Bama or LSU team won’t make it to the championship game. It’s going to be hard for a team to make it to the NC game wihtout winning your conference.

A very hypothetical question with little chance of happening: What if all the top teams fail to win their conference and only have one loss at the end of the season but UGA wins the SEC with 2 losses or any other team with 2 losses win their conference title. Would they get to the big dance?

Don’t crucify me, just food for thought.

What teams have we put away

We had an opportunity against Ole Miss but no we let them back in the ballgame with an inept 2nd half offense

Miss St when 4th an inches inside the 15 up by 18 we cant go for it and put that game away but instead we pull a UCF and go for the field goal

And Tenn our sorry offense couldnt score a TD against a sorry Tenn D until the 3rd QTR

Against

Miss St couldnt score in the second half
Ole Miss the same
Tenn could only score a TD in one qtr only

3 sorry defenses and you look bad and instead of beating these teams respectfully we keep them in the ball games and get no respect from the Voters.

@AltamahaDawg,

I’m not sure. The reason I asked this question is because at the end of the 2007 team, UGA was ranked either 4 or 5 and two teams in front of them lost the final regular season game. You would think that UGA would have move up to the #2 spot but they actually dropped in the polls because they didn’t win their conference. Bob Stoops even made comments that you shouldn’t be able to play for a NC if you failed to win your respective conference title. However, if memory serves me right, OK is the only team that has played for a title in the modern BCS era without actually winning their conference title.

Agree with Mike. It’s easy to root for Vandy against UGA in this game. UGA bloggers are clearly looking past vandy…not sure why. It’s an SEC road game foe UGA; Vandy is well coached and its only a matter of time before Coach James Franklin gets the offense moving; no doubt that the Vandy defense I think is rated higher than the UGA defense in several major categories. I see this game being close in the 4th quarter with a field goal or mistake by either team in the 4th qtr being the margin of victory. Would not surprise me at all at a Vandy win by 3 points based on thier defense and them making enough plays on offense with the new qb Jordan Rogers. Vandy lost bad to SC and Ala, which 95% of college football teams would have as well. Many of the UGA bloggers here have a much too high opinion of your UGA football team and should not look past Vandy. I for one would love to see vandy completely disrupt the SEC east by pulling off the upset. Go Dores !

I look for Richt and company to struggle against the Comdores as has been the history of this team for the past few years, Murray continues to miss wide open receivers on long routes and continues to settle for field goals (when walsh doesn’t miss) instead of td’s when in the red zone, Georgia use to be a team which was exciting to watch but has become a team that is downright painful to watch.

It is up to Arkansas, MSU to defeat SC in the SEC. W lost control when we lost to them on FUMBLES and PICS for 6 and FAKE PUNTS.

It is up to UGA to defeat Vandy, Florida, KY and New Mexico State and AU and GT. That is all that UGA can do to ahve a fairly decent season, although it may not be good enought to keep MCMR around.

NONE of these teams is great. GT may just be the best of them with their wishbone. If UGA cannot run the table for the remainder of the year, we do not deserve a shot in the Dome vs a SEC West team, given our horrific season killing start. Period. End of story.

It is up to Bobo, TG and CMR and the PRIDE of the UGA D. Does the UGA D have any pride? We will find out in Nashville.

I do fear AM throwing pics all over the lot that end up keeping Vandy motivated and hungry. AM is a weak link with his poor decisions, while under pass rush pressure.

I am looking over muy shoulder wondering who you are talking to. So again. Try arguing with me about things I ACTUALLY say, not what you just wish I “meant” so you can win the argument.

Now, on that that particular quote of mine that you picked: had absolutely nothing to do with me saying we had a good offense going. IN fact the point I was making there was relative to our offense not being our strong point right now. “putting away teams” to me… means finding “the” way to make sure you win and making sure they don’t have a way to. That’s not always going to be the same “the” way. And obviously its based on your teams abilities and options.

GT Bob

You are playing “All-in” on GT being undefeated. You’ve slipped from reality there. Given the correct scenario, Boise will challenge the BCS. It will be very difficult to leap frog in the top 5 of the BCS as happened to Boise in the past. Don’t count on that happening again. You are behind Boise now and unlikely will they lose.

I don’t think Stanford will go the distance. Okie St is also ahead of GT although they or OU will fall as LSU/Bama. “IF” the nerds did go undefeated, you won’t make the BCS score that will Wisconsin or OU (or even Boise) and that scenario is with LSU/Bama out of the picture. Even undefeated, GT hasn’t much of a chance unless the stars align just perfectly and the moon turns into blood.

Is the great Richt gonna finish with unmeaningful wins against Vanderbilt, Kentucky, New Mexico State, and Tech and get clocked in meaningful losses to Florida and Auburn? What’s the answer? You betcha!! That means he gets slammed against all teams this year that amount to any degree of challenge and difficulty-Boise, South Carolina, Florida OF COURSE, and Auburn. Many bloggers are also correct, the great Richt can really stink the joint up against the likes of a Vandy or Kentucky, but concerning these two this year that would take some bigtime stinking, but this is the stinkmaster.

thegreatricht, you know you trolling tech nerds keep picking UGA to lose games and we just keep laughing at you. All we heard on here was “MSU is going to roll you pups tween the hedges” or “no way Richt goes up to Knoxville and not get beaten” .. funny though, we look up and in the Win column are wins over, well, MSU and UT. Then all you want to say is “well, those were cupcake wins” (as if anyone on Tech’s schedule the first 7 games could match up with either of those two teams). So here is the actual question we want answered. How many games will you predict us to lose that blow up in your face before you finally disappear?

A win is a win. We barely hung on to beat underachieving teams in route to the ‘80 national championship . Say what you want but if we win out and beat LSU or BAMY, that loss to Boise State may have helped us and could give a good argument. We will be in top 10 by end of November anyway. What would really be cool is to play Boise State for national championship! Anything can happen!

And if the Georgia offense, defense and special teams all were to suffer an improbable implosion and the Dores somehow got one of their occasional wins in this series, well, things would get awfully ugly in Athens.

I wouldn’t worry about that. That hasn’t happened since 2006. Vandy fumbled away the winning drive in their 17-20 loss in 2007. Besides, all of that is so long ago that it isn’t even relevant. Who wants to live in the past?

I would worry about your own games. You guys come on here every year and run your mouths on how bad UGA is and how bad you are going to beat the Dawgs. Then UGA wins and you start talking about b-ball season. You have your own blog. Why not stay on it? You pretend to be Dog fans and bash Richt. I bet if you had a coach that won 100 games in 10 1/2 seasons you would be naming the stadium after him. As for Vandy we need to go up and take care of the ball and everything will work out. Vandy has a very aggressive defense that is quite good. The Commodore offense is going to wake up one week. If we play our game we will be fine. Take a week off and get ready for the Gators.

No matter what happens in Nashville, the Richt haters will be out in force. You can’t please a disgruntled “so called fan.” Vince Dooley said it clearly, “Mark Richt will be here a very long time.” It is almost humourous to see the Richt haters squirm with every win. They know, what they don’t want to know, that four more wins and Richt signs a long term deal. Its about recruiting. Recruits don’t sign with only 2 years on a coach’s contract. This is when big time schools give long term deals. Adams and McGarity know that Richt is the top recruiter in the country, that every daddy and mama in the land want their sons playing for Richt. You can take it to the bank. Richt will sign a new 5 year deal towards the end of the season and the Richt haters will keep on puking their poison which has hurt the team they claim to love. Sad.

Just go out and play the damn game! Be productive, consistence in scoring points, and defense. As far as the top 25, who really cares? Win the games and the ranking will take care of itself.

In fact, It would be nice to Georgia play their best game ever and hopefully win this one ! I wish Georgia players and coaches the very best.

It goes without saying- don’t look pass this game! You lose this one and it’ll be another pile-on by the media and Georgia haters.

It would be nice to see Malcome get some playing time and Brandon Smith be used in the offense as a running back along with Crowell, Samuels and Thomas.

Congradulations to the Defense and it good to see the offensive line and receivers being productive.

Best of luck this week and the rest of the season. (Herschel Walker, assistant running-backs coach and David Pollard , assistant defensive ends coach). That’s got a nice ring to it!

I agree that there are some irrational bandwagon “Richt Haters” out there. There is, however, a contingent of Georgia fans who like Mark Richt personally, but have lost confidence in his ability to lead the football program. While they might be pleased with this 4 game win streak (Lord knows, it’s been a while), they are rightfully skeptical, since the past 4 opponents have not exactly been playing quality football this season.

Certainly these fans are concerned that a below-average performance this year, masked by wins against inferior opponents might lead to a contract extension for Coach Richt, even if no real progress has been achieved in the actual quality of the football program. That’s not an unreasonable concern for a fan to have in this situation.

If you cannot put them away, they are not lesser opponents. They are worthy opponents for your team. That is the problem. Dream team coached into mediocre team by the ‘player’s coach’. The $3 million+ mediocre coach who serenely believes it’s OK to start slow and underachieve from there. Little gimmick here and there for keeping the fun in the game. Maybe the ‘kids’ will get their blood up about some meaningless, thug world affront. What stupidity! What an embarrassment! Still a demonstrated lack of discipline. And for the game that is supposed to seriously acquaint these young men with discipline. Maybe Georgia wins one or two more games than last year.

Nice post, Dawgman.

It’s possible our team could run the table during the rest of the regular season, thus winning a lot more games than last year. Should that happen, it does not invalidate the points you’ve made.

Let’s say that our boys run the table thus ending up in an SEC title match against Alabama or LSU. Wouldn’t that be great? Let’s say that such a title game ends up demonstrating the difference between our program and the football program at the other institution. Let’s say the demonstration exceeds the demonstration last time Georgia played Alabama, in the Blackout Game, which we so enjoyed.

What then?

If all goes according to what is prophesied here, by the time such an SEC title game begins, our head coach will have a several year contract extension.

Would that mean a Georgia football team which continues to seriously compete for the SEC title, and is in the hunt for the national title?

To answer that question, we should look at history.

In order to continue to seriously compete for the SEC title, our team would have to have a history of competing for the SEC title. Do we have that? Not hardly.

We have a history of losing to the winning teams, losing to the ranked teams, and consistently losing to Florida. We have a history of winning the big games only on rare occasions, and of losing the easy games about as often. We’re barely competitive against any half decent team, and we celebrate victories over terrible teams as if we’d beaten someone meaningful. For goodness sake, we lose to South Carolina.

Should we win a few more games, should our coach’s contract be extended? If we want more of the same, it should. Thinking this coach will become different from what he has demonstrated himself to be as a coach is wishful thinking at best, and perhaps delusional.

If Mark Richt’s contract is extended, we are doomed to more years of mediocre, undisciplined, uninspired, uneven football.

Under Coach Richt, we may occasionally rise above the third tier of the SEC, but our program will most often compete with Kentucky, Vandy, Ole Miss, and MSU to avoid perpetual doormat status.

Meanwhile, we will be the team excellent coaches have to remind their players not to look beyond, not to overlook. We will on rare occasions beat some of them, in the same way that we currently beat Florida on rare occasions, and Vandy currently beats us on rare occasions.

The fact that we can fairly consistently beat the NATS proves little. As bad as they are, they will always beat us on occasion. Such is the nature of rivalry football.

Does this suit our fans, our students, our graduates, and the powers that be within our administration? We’ll see, won’t we.

Speaking of the administration, and the powers that be what do they want from the UGA football program? Going by history, they seem quite content with mediocrity, as long as the money flows into the University.

Maybe we can run the table, and get a new coach. Maybe our current coach will shape up. Maybe our thugs will be transformed into gentleman. Maybe we will get to the SEC title game. Maybe our football team will play for the national title, and win it…

I Wonder . . .

October 14th, 2011
9:28 am

. . . if Damon Evans was the real culprit in the decline of this football program?

Over the last two years, Richt has been making the changes that need to be made. He’s revamped the S&C program, cleaned up the ranks, and clearly made an outstanding choice in DC, who’s got the UGA defense playing tough.

The O-line is inconsistent, as is Murray (Sophomore slump? I think so.), but the offense is showing potential and flashes of lethal play. Richt spoke up and called out his OC for not nailing the coffin shut when the O clearly has the tools to do so. He put together an outstanding recruiting class this past year, loading the team with talent oppponents will hate to line up against for the next several years. Regardless of the W-L record at the end of the year, the 2011 team is starting to look good, and the UGA football program is starting to show signs of strength again. Given Richt’s W-L record and how the program is improving, I think it would be ludicrous to think about canning Richt — and I had my doubts after the program’s slide over the last 4-5 years.

I wonder if Evans was the culprit all along? McGarity may just be the piece that was missing from the UGA football program.

Force our will on them for a change.please quit changing the plays so much.FORCE something on them and make the defense adjust. Then you can throw all that other in there. There’s way to much thinking going on out there before the ball snapped. That way Murray can just play and use those legs.HOW in the world can you stop that offense with all the weapons we have.Watch Bama LSU they start out forcing there will on you. Then blend in big plays. Then force it some more.Defense will have a great day.I KNOW ARM CHAIR QUARTER BACK I’m not a coach but it’s fun thinking like one

That makes about as much sense as saying that your defense is great because your offense hasn’t been productive, but you’ve been winning games anyway.
