Dawgs need to take care of business against Vandy

If Mike Bobo isn't in "ball control" mode by the third quarter, Georgia will be in trouble. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

If Mike Bobo isn't in "ball control" mode by the third quarter, Georgia will be in trouble. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Playing Vanderbilt in Nashville Saturday is one of those “no respect” situations for Mark Richt’s Georgia Bulldogs.

UGA is expected to win over the SEC’s designated jabroni, but other than notching another East Division victory it’s not going to do the Dogs much good in terms of getting back into that elusive national spotlight. If beating Tennessee in Knoxville couldn’t get the Dogs into the Top 25, it’s hard to see a win over Vandy accomplishing that feat.

Let’s face it, if the Dogs win big, as could certainly happen against a Commodores team that’s gone two games without scoring a touchdown, the reaction will be, “So what? It’s only Vanderbilt.”

Should Georgia struggle any against a decent Vandy defense, which does lead the country in interceptions with 14, it will merely reinforce the image of the Dogs as a team that can’t put away a lesser opponent.

And if the Georgia offense, defense and special teams all were to suffer an improbable implosion and the Dores somehow got one of their occasional wins in this series, well, things would get awfully ugly in Athens.

That’s not very likely, though. Probably what we’ll see Saturday is Georgia get up by two or three scores and then Mike Bobo will hand the game to Todd Grantham to finish off. And in this instance that shouldn’t draw many fan complaints. This isn’t a game where you want Georgia’s starters still on the field in the fourth quarter.

So what would I like to see Saturday while the first string is in the game? Aaron Murray and Tavarres King finally getting their timing right and connecting on a couple of long balls would be nice. Isaiah Crowell having a solid day while not getting any more banged up would be good, too. And backup QB Hutson Mason getting some playing time would be good for him as a player and also would mean the game is well in hand. Defensively, I’d just like to see Georgia continue the progress it’s shown in every game since that dismal opener in the Dome.

No one should pretend to be excited about a win over Vandy. But if the Dogs come out ready to play and take care of business, Georgia fans should be happy … even if it doesn’t impress anyone else.

GT Bob

You are playing “All-in” on GT being undefeated. You’ve slipped from reality there. Given the correct scenario, Boise will challenge the BCS. It will be very difficult to leap frog in the top 5 of the BCS as happened to Boise in the past. Don’t count on that happening again. You are behind Boise now and unlikely will they lose.

I don’t think Stanford will go the distance. Okie St is also ahead of GT although they or OU will fall as LSU/Bama. “IF” the nerds did go undefeated, you won’t make the BCS score that will Wisconsin or OU (or even Boise) and that scenario is with LSU/Bama out of the picture. Even undefeated, GT hasn’t much of a chance unless the stars align just perfectly and the moon turns into blood.

Is the great Richt gonna finish with unmeaningful wins against Vanderbilt, Kentucky, New Mexico State, and Tech and get clocked in meaningful losses to Florida and Auburn? What’s the answer? You betcha!! That means he gets slammed against all teams this year that amount to any degree of challenge and difficulty-Boise, South Carolina, Florida OF COURSE, and Auburn. Many bloggers are also correct, the great Richt can really stink the joint up against the likes of a Vandy or Kentucky, but concerning these two this year that would take some bigtime stinking, but this is the stinkmaster.

Of course you’ll be 7 and 0 you play in the ACC.Why are you ranked #12 instead of in the top 10? Because you play in the ACC.And Tech has played how ranked teams this season? Oh thats right,0!

thegreatricht, you know you trolling tech nerds keep picking UGA to lose games and we just keep laughing at you. All we heard on here was “MSU is going to roll you pups tween the hedges” or “no way Richt goes up to Knoxville and not get beaten” .. funny though, we look up and in the Win column are wins over, well, MSU and UT. Then all you want to say is “well, those were cupcake wins” (as if anyone on Tech’s schedule the first 7 games could match up with either of those two teams). So here is the actual question we want answered. How many games will you predict us to lose that blow up in your face before you finally disappear?

A win is a win. We barely hung on to beat underachieving teams in route to the ‘80 national championship . Say what you want but if we win out and beat LSU or BAMY, that loss to Boise State may have helped us and could give a good argument. We will be in top 10 by end of November anyway. What would really be cool is to play Boise State for national championship! Anything can happen!

Who put the drugs in King’s cereal this morning? UGA may very well win this game but I mean, come on, “getting up by 2 or 3 scores and resting the starters for the 4th quarter”? UGA couldn’t do that against Ole Miss, MSU or TN and, statistically, Vandy’s D is head and shoulders above those 3. Our stats include USC and Bama and we’re still 5th in scoring and overall D. You’re missing your #1 wide receiver as well. Delusions of grandeur!!

Just reading on georgia recruiting that the two running backs out of north Carolina gurley and marshal will probably not go to the same school as thought. Marshal will prob announce his decision in early December but the coaches of that school would prob know from him about a month ahead of time. I wouldn’t worry about that. That hasn’t happened since 2006. Vandy fumbled away the winning drive in their 17-20 loss in 2007. Besides, all of that is so long ago that it isn’t even relevant. Who wants to live in the past?

The hate from Tech fans is unbelievable. They come every week under a new name and spew hatred towards the school that leads the series and has won 9 out of the last ten years. I would worry about your own games. You guys come on here every year and run your mouths on how bad UGA is and how bad you are going to beat the Dawgs. Then UGA wins and you start talking about b-ball season. You have your own blog. Why not stay on it? You pretend to be Dog fans and bash Richt. I bet if you had a coach that won 100 games in 10 1/2 seasons you would be naming the stadium after him. As for Vandy we need to go up and take care of the ball and everything will work out. Vandy has a very aggressive defense that is quite good. The Commodore offense is going to wake up one week. If we play our game we will be fine. Take a week off and get ready for the Gators.

No matter what happens in Nashville, the Richt haters will be out in force. You can’t please a disgruntled “so called fan.” Vince Dooley said it clearly, “Mark Richt will be here a very long time.” It is almost humourous to see the Richt haters squirm with every win. They know, what they don’t want to know, that four more wins and Richt signs a long term deal. Its about recruiting. Recruits don’t sign with only 2 years on a coach’s contract. This is when big time schools give long term deals. Adams and McGarity know that Richt is the top recruiter in the country, that every daddy and mama in the land want their sons playing for Richt. You can take it to the bank. Richt will sign a new 5 year deal towards the end of the season and the Richt haters will keep on puking their poison which has hurt the team they claim to love. Sad.

Just go out and play the damn game! Be productive, consistence in scoring points, and defense. As far as the top 25, who really cares? Win the games and the ranking will take care of itself.

In fact, It would be nice to Georgia play their best game ever and hopefully win this one ! I wish Georgia players and coaches the very best.

It goes without saying- don’t look pass this game! You lose this one and it’ll be another pile-on by the media and Georgia haters.

It would be nice to see Malcome get some playing time and Brandon Smith be used in the offense as a running back along with Crowell, Samuels and Thomas.

Congradulations to the Defense and it good to see the offensive line and receivers being productive.

Best of luck this week and the rest of the season. (Herschel Walker, assistant running-backs coach and David Pollard , assistant defensive ends coach). That’s got a nice ring to it!

@Roddy

I agree that there are some irrational bandwagon “Richt Haters” out there. There is, however, a contingent of Georgia fans who like Mark Richt personally, but have lost confidence in his ability to lead the football program. While they might be pleased with this 4 game win streak (Lord knows, it’s been a while), they are rightfully skeptical, since the past 4 opponents have not exactly been playing quality football this season.

Certainly these fans are concerned that a below-average performance this year, masked by wins against inferior opponents might lead to a contract extension for Coach Richt, even if no real progress has been achieved in the actual quality of the football program. That’s not an unreasonable concern for a fan to have in this situation.

Coffee, man, coffee!
If you cannot put them away, they are not lesser opponents. They are worthy opponents for your team. That is the problem. Dream team coached into mediocre team by the ‘player’s coach’. The $3 million+ mediocre coach who serenely believes it’s OK to start slow and underachieve from there. Little gimmick here and there for keeping the fun in the game. Maybe the ‘kids’ will get their blood up about some meaningless, thug world affront. What stupidity! What an embarrassment! Still a demonstrated lack of discipline. And for the game that is supposed to seriously acquaint these young men with discipline. Maybe Georgia wins one or two more games than last year.
Y’all just shoot me. I’m tired of waiting for next year beginning by October each of the past few seasons. Too bad Georgia couldn’t win another for Munson.

Nice post, Dawgman.

It’s possible our team could run the table during the rest of the regular season, thus winning a lot more games than last year. Should that happen, it does not invalidate the points you’ve made.

Let’s say that our boys run the table thus ending up in an SEC title match against Alabama or LSU. Wouldn’t that be great? Let’s say that such a title game ends up demonstrating the difference between our program and the football program at the other institution. Let’s say the demonstration exceeds the demonstration last time Georgia played Alabama, in the Blackout Game, which we so enjoyed.

What then?

If all goes according to what is prophesied here, by the time such an SEC title game begins, our head coach will have a several year contract extension.

Would that mean a Georgia football team which continues to seriously compete for the SEC title, and is in the hunt for the national title?

To answer that question, we should look at history.

In order to continue to seriously compete for the SEC title, our team would have to have a history of competing for the SEC title. Do we have that? Not hardly.

We have a history of losing to the winning teams, losing to the ranked teams, and consistently losing to Florida. We have a history of winning the big games only on rare occasions, and of losing the easy games about as often. We’re barely competitive against any half decent team, and we celebrate victories over terrible teams as if we’d beaten someone meaningful. For goodness sake, we lose to South Carolina.

Should we win a few more games, should our coach’s contract be extended? If we want more of the same, it should. Thinking this coach will become different from what he has demonstrated himself to be as a coach is wishful thinking at best, and perhaps delusional.

If Mark Richt’s contract is extended, we are doomed to more years of mediocre, undisciplined, uninspired, uneven football.

Under Coach Richt, we may occasionally rise above the third tier of the SEC, but our program will most often compete with Kentucky, Vandy, Ole Miss, and MSU to avoid perpetual doormat status.

Meanwhile, we will be the team excellent coaches have to remind their players not to look beyond, not to overlook. We will on rare occasions beat some of them, in the same way that we currently beat Florida on rare occasions, and Vandy currently beats us on rare occasions.

The fact that we can fairly consistently beat the NATS proves little. As bad as they are, they will always beat us on occasion. Such is the nature of rivalry football.

Does this suit our fans, our students, our graduates, and the powers that be within our administration? We’ll see, won’t we.

Speaking of the administration, and the powers that be what do they want from the UGA football program? Going by history, they seem quite content with mediocrity, as long as the money flows into the University.

Maybe we can run the table, and get a new coach. Maybe our current coach will shape up. Maybe our thugs will be transformed into gentleman. Maybe we will get to the SEC title game. Maybe our football team will play for the national title, and win it…
