Dawgs need to take care of business against Vandy

If Mike Bobo isn't in "ball control" mode by the third quarter, Georgia will be in trouble. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Playing Vanderbilt in Nashville Saturday is one of those “no respect” situations for Mark Richt’s Georgia Bulldogs.

UGA is expected to win over the SEC’s designated jabroni, but other than notching another East Division victory it’s not going to do the Dogs much good in terms of getting back into that elusive national spotlight. If beating Tennessee in Knoxville couldn’t get the Dogs into the Top 25, it’s hard to see a win over Vandy accomplishing that feat.

Let’s face it, if the Dogs win big, as could certainly happen against a Commodores team that’s gone two games without scoring a touchdown, the reaction will be, “So what? It’s only Vanderbilt.”

Should Georgia struggle any against a decent Vandy defense, which does lead the country in interceptions with 14, it will merely reinforce the image of the Dogs as a team that can’t put away a lesser opponent.

And if the Georgia offense, defense and special teams all were to suffer an improbable implosion and the Dores somehow got one of their occasional wins in this series, well, things would get awfully ugly in Athens.

That’s not very likely, though. Probably what we’ll see Saturday is Georgia get up by two or three scores and then Mike Bobo will hand the game to Todd Grantham to finish off. And in this instance that shouldn’t draw many fan complaints. This isn’t a game where you want Georgia’s starters still on the field in the fourth quarter.

So what would I like to see Saturday while the first string is in the game? Aaron Murray and Tavarres King finally getting their timing right and connecting on a couple of long balls would be nice. Isaiah Crowell having a solid day while not getting any more banged up would be good, too. And backup QB Hutson Mason getting some playing time would be good for him as a player and also would mean the game is well in hand. Defensively, I’d just like to see Georgia continue the progress it’s shown in every game since that dismal opener in the Dome.

No one should pretend to be excited about a win over Vandy. But if the Dogs come out ready to play and take care of business, Georgia fans should be happy … even if it doesn’t impress anyone else.

First I wanna say Bama Stan, you seem to be a student of football and enjoy reading your posts.
The does have a great D and will slow down the passing game. But they dont have a way of scoring against the Dawgs. I see the Dawgs winning 28-6. The Dawgs should make it to the dome. I see SC losing to UT or Ark and possibly UF. As UGA gets better each week, SC seems to get worse. Maybe Shaw will help them wake up, but I hope not. UGA will be ranked if they beat UF, (23) and rise to around 19 after AU. Bat Tech down and UGA moves to 14. Make the SEC title game close and rise to 10. Beat a Bama/ LSU team and move to 5. BUT STILL..NO WAY TO REACH A NC GAME. BUT..given the improvement and the Dawgs could have a team 10-3 going bowling..against a Boise team!! GO Dawgs!!!

Vanderbilt will provide a good challenge for our offense. We should be able to measure the progress of the offense. It would be nice to see some good run blocking and as stated it would be nice to see Aaron hit King deep over the middle. The defense should be able to improve their stats but I’m not sure it will be a big challenge. I would like to see a good pass rush up front and then our incredibly gifted secondary and LBs should have a field day with interceptions. Brandon and Branden should have a big day returning punts. It would also be good to see what Marshall can do fielding and returning punts. He could make a boring game a little more exciting.

Unfortunately, I predict a close game. 28-14 and starters will play all game. CMR and this UGA team have no respect nationally because they can’t put anyone away when they need to. That will not change this week and UGA will not be ranked although we will have a 5-2 record. UGA will only get respect if they win out.

your comments are unwanted.
The Dawgs have put away the past 4 teams. Did you even watch those games??
Ole Miss got lucky they even scored a touchdown
Miss State could not stop the run and was being handled by the D
^^^^^—— I would guarantee you would not have called Miss State a cup cake game the beginning of the year.
TENN- Are you joking? do you watch football? UGA owned that game. they gave Tenn the worst 3rd down conversion rate of the year (really the worst since Tyler Bray Started at QB)
Coastal Caro- yea, did what we were “supposed” to do
South Car- The Offense gift wrapped that one to the Def. UGAs D was pretty darn good in that game.
Statistics are nice but watching the games is where you make the smartest opinion of a team. The final score and the stats don’t always tell who really ran the game.
So, in point, you wanna compare Ole miss playing Vandy to Ole Miss playing UGA. I don’t know about you.. but if I was Ole Miss coach I would have worked a lot harder to prep against UGA (Silly I know) + I believe UGA slowed down the horses and just ran the ball in the 2nd half. (hence no one watching for the special teams play or the reverse.
But nice try

Yea I don’t get the “can’t put away teams” comments either. Outscoring, outplaying, controlling the game, and winning the game. Not sure what the point is other than those. As if we are barely excaping these last few with our hides. A team IS put away when thier opponents start running the ball every down with no respect for thier ability to mount a comeback.

I know, I know, the ESPN highlights, run the score up, foot on the (fill in the multiple choice), X-box crowd wants the numbers. I get that.

I don’t think that disgusting win over Maryland has proven anything to the college football world.
NC State Wolfpack
North Carolina Tar Heels
Kansas Jayhawks
Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders
Western Carolina Catamounts
I know the Tar Heels were supposed to be good but aren’t
Which one of these teams is a marque match-up???

WOW!! Whatever you are smoking i want some of it. This UGA offense want get up on any decent SEC defense by 2 or 3 t.d’s., Not with Bobo and Murray running the show. Especially without M.M, this team will be lucky to score 17 points on Vandy. The only good thing for UGA is that Vandy’s offense is as bad as the other 3 SEC teams UGA has beaten. UGA still hasn’t beaten a decent team, and the 3 SEC teams they have beaten, haven’t won a single SEC game between them One other note, Vandy leads the nation in INT”S, so Murray will make sure Vandy stays in this game until the 4th qt, if UGA even wins the game. UGA has not been impressive against anyone offensively, and Vandy will make them look like the average offense they are. If UGA is ahead and has a chance to put this team away, they sure had better, because it will be the last time they have a chance to put anyone away among FL, Auburn and Tech. I look for UGA to lose all 3 of those games, and Murray will prove once again that he can’t beat a team with a winning record. The misery will continue in Athens, especially with this recruting class. UGA will only get farther behind the Bama’s LSU’s, and Florida in talent. Give Richt 3 more years, and watch how far down the SEC ladder UGA falls.

No way GT Joe, pollsters have always placed, and bare with me here, WAAAAAAY too much emphasis on the Big 10 schedule. If GT wins out, the only wins the pollsters will look at are Clemson and UGA and maybe an iffy VT team (they usually are iffy). Compare that to how pollsters LOVE to say things like “well, look how Wisconsin did against Nebrasks, Mich St, Illinois, Penn St and OSU” .. not saying they are right, but look how OSU got into back to back NC games against UF and LSU despite playing what we all knew was a pansy schedule just to get their clocks cleaned by the SEC both times.

Miami – should be a good game
Clemson – good luck on this one….. If the line is good I am taking clemson

UGA – Will let this game speak for itself when it happens, shall we?

Ray Pugh and Tampa: I’m predicting at the end of the season that UNC will be around #20 (they are about to be ranked right now), clemson will be top 15 (maybe face them TWICE), VT will be top 20, and UGA top 25. That WOULD be 4, maybe 5 wins over ranked teams, BSU and Wisconsin won’t be able to say that.

And I love how some on here are now talking up Vandy as if they have been historically a tough team to beat

I guess if we lose to FL or GT close there will be some moral victory in it

the NC game will most likely be the winner of LSU BAMA and Ok State and Oklahoma. baring an upset then wisconsin or stanford will get in. Tech has too many teams to jump even if they go undefeated (unlikely) thats jumping three teams that will probably all end up undefeated. WIs, Stan, and Boise.

Wisonsin will most likely have at least 4 ranked team wins under their belt if they run the table. Illinois, Nebraska, Mich St, Penn St. Penn St isn’t ranked now but their only loss was to Bama so they will most likely crawl back into the rankings. That will be enough to stay top 2 if they stay undefeated.

With all due respect (and as Ricky Bobby said, you can say anything after saying “with all due respect”. You may have just validated the point by your comment. Saying you couldn’t stop the run, which led to you “almost beating” them. Maybe the point is just that; if you WOULD have stopped the run, maybe you DO beat them. Probably WAS the difference.

Had the recent wins been more impressive, UGA owuld already be in the top 25, but inching to an 8 point vicory over a terirble Tenn team, won’t do it.

Looks like Richt doesn’t care about doing what it takes ot crack into the top 25 again.

If Richt doesn’t end up in the top 25 by the end of the year, he’s fired.

That sorry excuse for an offense that we have and you like to defend cost us the Boise game.

The sorry conservative playcalling of run draw up the middle more times than I could count, sideline pass after sideline pass with 3 and out kept the defense out too long and they capitalized in the third Qtr

When we got too far behind then the play book once again opened up throwing downfield to our TE and Mitchell

Then when we play sorry teams like Ole Miss and Miss ST we open it up then when we get a decent lead we go to running the clock out and almost let the team back into the game i.e. Ol Miss

Do this against Tech and they will beat us
