Dawgs need to take care of business against Vandy

If Mike Bobo isn't in "ball control" mode by the third quarter, Georgia will be in trouble. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

Playing Vanderbilt in Nashville Saturday is one of those “no respect” situations for Mark Richt’s Georgia Bulldogs.

UGA is expected to win over the SEC’s designated jabroni, but other than notching another East Division victory it’s not going to do the Dogs much good in terms of getting back into that elusive national spotlight. If beating Tennessee in Knoxville couldn’t get the Dogs into the Top 25, it’s hard to see a win over Vandy accomplishing that feat.

Let’s face it, if the Dogs win big, as could certainly happen against a Commodores team that’s gone two games without scoring a touchdown, the reaction will be, “So what? It’s only Vanderbilt.”

Should Georgia struggle any against a decent Vandy defense, which does lead the country in interceptions with 14, it will merely reinforce the image of the Dogs as a team that can’t put away a lesser opponent.

And if the Georgia offense, defense and special teams all were to suffer an improbable implosion and the Dores somehow got one of their occasional wins in this series, well, things would get awfully ugly in Athens.

That’s not very likely, though. Probably what we’ll see Saturday is Georgia get up by two or three scores and then Mike Bobo will hand the game to Todd Grantham to finish off. And in this instance that shouldn’t draw many fan complaints. This isn’t a game where you want Georgia’s starters still on the field in the fourth quarter.

So what would I like to see Saturday while the first string is in the game? Aaron Murray and Tavarres King finally getting their timing right and connecting on a couple of long balls would be nice. Isaiah Crowell having a solid day while not getting any more banged up would be good, too. And backup QB Hutson Mason getting some playing time would be good for him as a player and also would mean the game is well in hand. Defensively, I’d just like to see Georgia continue the progress it’s shown in every game since that dismal opener in the Dome.

No one should pretend to be excited about a win over Vandy. But if the Dogs come out ready to play and take care of business, Georgia fans should be happy … even if it doesn’t impress anyone else.

The O doesn’t need to hand the game over to CTG. If they can put up 100 points they need to do it to get this offense in sync. They don’t need to sit on the ball, they need to get some kind of rhythm going. There should be no INTs come Sat.. Murray needs to eliminate the stupid decisions and stop overthrowing WRs and since he is still here, Bobo needs to get the playcalling down. The OL needs to establish themselves better. They are the biggest OL in college football and now they need to become a very physical OL. The D is playing well but, still needs to be more physical and play more in the opponents backfield.

After the first two games, I thought a “Dome to Dome” season would be a stretch but it is certainly a possibility again. With a little luck we can be there for the SEC Championship Game. Of course our luck in not playing Alabama, LSU and Arkansas in the regular season means we’ll likely meet Alabama or LSU in the Dome. If both the offense and the defense continue to improve, we can give them a game and maybe, just maybe, pull out a win.

We gave up the opportunity to care about the polls when we embarrased ourselves to the Blue People and SC. At this point, you MUST win the SEC East and it is possible. Would have been much easier to control our own destiny.

I just feel like until the whoop UF in Jax, this season is just sitting on ice.

how many cupcakes… Let’s think about what you are saying as it is related to football
1.) SEC (southeastern conference) has to play everyteam on that side (or division play as most would call it) which includes USCe Tenn Vandy Kentucky Fla. Coastal Carolina is the 1 of two sub bowl teams we are playing this year.
2.) Everyteam has to play 3 Conference teams from the other side of the division (west side) UGA always plays Aubarn, and it just so happens UGA got “lucky”** with Ole Miss and Miss State
(**)- the Miss teams were scheduled a couple years back. Idiot. ( I believe Miss State was a beast last year – I bet my bottom dollar you would not have called Miss State a “CupCake” before year start)
3.) Go ahead and look at what sub bowl teams the rest of the SEC play (not including LSU)
4.) though UGA didn’t win… THEY SCHEDULED BOISE STATE…. cupcake, I think not
so before you let all that football “knowledge” spew out of your mouth you may want to talk to your daddy about how a mans sport is played because it is apparent you don’t know anything

Slam the hammer on the nail and get out of there without any injuries. If things are under control in the 3rd quarter, get Crowell out of the game to rest and get over his injuries. Same with other starters.

Win, get well and move on to beat the hell out of Florida!

13 NATIONAL TITLES – 22 SEC TITLES!!!

Good article Bill – but you miss the point on something.

Your Win Loss record is the #1 priority in you ranking – not necessarly who you play.
If UGA beats Vandy – and is 5-2 – they will move up and over any ranked team that suffers their 3rd loss.

It seems schedule only matters when pollsters are ranking teams from conferences other than theirs.
For example:
Who has Michigan played this year?
Who has GT played this year?

You could play 3 top 5 teams – and lose all 3 – yet still be a top 10 team in the literal sense.
However, by the end of the season – you are still viewed as a 3 loss team – with many inferior teams rated ahead of you due to an easier schedule.

Just how it works.

So the best thing for each school to do – is to do what Florida does – and all teams do to an extent – focus on your conference – and do not schedule a potential loss OOC.

Florida plays FSU every year.
Georgia plays Tech every year.

I get tired of reading that UGA or Tech or Bama or Florida playing weak OOC schedules by the critics. Yet, who does Ohio State play OOC? Who does Texas play OOC?

Sure, every once in a while schools will schedule a great game – Texas/Ohio State. But more often than not – this does not happne – and for good reason.
1. Focus on conference schedule
2. OOC is for tune ups and rest for conference games.
3. The more wins you have – the higher you are ranked.

See Hawaii in 2008!!!

Actually they didn’t sit on the ball against TN. They scored twice in the third quarter and were driving (or trying to) going into the 4th. The only ONE possession in question was at around 8 minute and that started with one of our staple plays.(4 yrd gain) The 2nd down got stuffed but that was also a play that we had been running with success all night. Sometimes a play simply doesnt work. I have no problem protecting the ball on 3rd and long from our own 19 with a 2 TD lead, burning 2 minutes and one of their last TOs at that point.

Good points, though that 2007 Hawaii team had NO business playing that UGA team. If (shoulda woulda coulda I know, I am a UGA homer) Moreno would have been let outta the stables earlier then the 2 lose UGA team would would have been 1 lose and had a chance to play a 2 lose LSU team that (IMO) would have gotten destroyed by UGA. AND LAU WENT TO THE NC GAME AND WON. of course at the time I wanted UGA to play USC (cali) in the rose bowl and then Illinois could have play Hawaii but the bowl games are usually only about 30% of the time a great game (ie Texas v USC 2005)

I’d like to see Butler pull of what that LSU punter did against Florida. There’ve been multiple times this season in which the opposing team hasn’t pressured our punter, but instead started sprinting back, expecting Butler to boom it. Could easily get a first down, if not more, if you execute the fake punt like they did.

- agree with you that UGA had the team to win a NT in 2007/08.
- UGA really clicked mid season and on. Would have beaten LSU in the SEC Title game.
- enjoyed Hawaii beat down – expecially after the ESPN announcers picked Hawaii and Colt Brennan.

Also – 2002 team was good enough to win a NT.
Issue that year was the OK and USC were both ranked ahead fo UGA in preseason polls – and went undefeated. I am convinced UGA would have beaten both Ohio State and Miami that year.

Issue for that year was Florida – and the Shockley pick 6 – the difference in the game won by Florida.
For all those crying for Hutson Mason getting playing time – remember the Shockley pick 6 – which ultimately left UGA out of the NT game that year.

Agree with Luke This is pretty much the same cast of charaters that was suppose to have an easy game of it in the bowl game……UCF 10 UGA 6. We cant afford to look ahead to the next quester let alone pronounce ourselves as a world beater. Murray has a history of giving teams points for the asking- I would not feel safe with a 2-3 score lead on anyone. Gosh Luke, you’re right. I mean, Vandy is practically at LSU’s level all of a sudden. I mean, look at all the TDs they have had the last two games and look at all the points UGA’s defense has given up in that same span. The argument of “well this team beat that team by X amount of points but that team only won by Y amount of points” never holds any water. UGA wasn’t picked by many on these blogs to beat UT in KNOXVILLE, but they did and now most of the doubters still won’t give them a plug nickel worth of credit by saying, well, who has UT beat in the SEC. Guess what, UGA added to that 0 for UT.

LawDawg – well – if you are a lawyer – I will not argue!

But you have to admit, troll is usually reserved for those that spout the negative!

This is not a UGA blog – it is an open blog in the AJC that focusses on UGA – all are welcome to comment.

Hey – for those want to fire Coach Richt – HERE IS ONE FOR YOU!!!!

There was a coach in the SEC that took over a struggling SEC program.
The first few years – the team was mediocre winning 5 games, then 7 games, then 8 games.
Then his team got on a roll and he his team had double digit win seasons with and occaisional 9 win season for several years.
However – his 9th season – his team won 8 games, followed by another 8 win season, then followed by a 6 win season – and the NATIVES got restless.

Then – the coach had ANOTHER 6 win season – the NATIVES were ready to run this poor coach out of town:
– Several other SEC teams passed him by.
– Recruiting was suffering
– His staff changes were not as effective.
– They hated his OC.

Sound familiar???

Can you name the coach???

Well – here is the rest of the story:
He went on to coach at the same school of 12 more seasons – and was incredibly successfull – winning seaveral conference and national titles along the way.
His name was Paul “Bear” Bryant.

Here is my point – be carefull of what you wish for.
Richt is a solid HC – a great representitve to your University.
UGA hit a down cycle – like all programs do – and all coaches do for several reasons:
– recruits did not work out
– coaching maybe got stale
– attrition in coaching – replacements have to install systems

I see Coach Richt changing it up – and letting some players go that are not invested in the program.
I see a UGA team that has not given up this year – despite a humbling start.
I see a UGA team – that will be ranked top 20 by seasons end – and potentially top 15.
I see a program that is fighting to get better – yet has a work to do.
I see a program on the rise – but just not sure how high they will go.

What would have happened to ALABAMA football is all the “EXPERTS” got their way and fired Coach Bryant. No Telling – but I doubt the program would have been as successfull.

Richt is not Bryant – but if UGA can be patient – this guy will turn the ship.
