Richt’s aggressive stance against Vols likely to pay dividends later

Aaron Murray was pleased the Dogs had earned their head coach's trust. (Associated Press)

A few more thoughts about Georgia’s win over Tennessee in Knoxville …

There was a lot of talk after the game about Mark Richt’s more aggressive approach in the first half, when Georgia went for it three times on fourth-and-short yardage. That ran counter to the coach’s stance several times earlier in the season when he had declined to go for it on fourth (including twice against Mississippi State), peevishly answering his players’ complaints about it by saying that if you want to make a first down, you do it in the first three tries.

Richt obviously rethought that view this past week. “I wasn’t in the mood to go for it on fourth down last week,” he said, because he “didn’t like what we had prepared.” But in the week before playing the Vols, he said, “we did a good job of putting a plan together. I had more confidence in what the offensive staff put together, so I was more decisive with what to do because I had more faith in what we were doing and how we were going about it.”

You get the idea that maybe the head coach was a bit more involved in the offensive game planning last week.

The results weren’t so much evident on the scoreboard, as the Dogs didn’t manage to score touchdowns on the drives kept alive by Richt going for it on fourth down. But it probably paid off big-time with his players. As Aaron Murray put it: “It showed that he trusted us.”

That could pay dividends down the road. …

Mike Bobo deserves both bouquets and brickbats, as my junior high school newspaper used to say, for his playcalling Saturday night. He had Murray mix up short passes and the long ball, and that call to have it thrown to Malcolm Mitchell downfield when the Dogs were backed up on their own 7 was masterful and resulted in the game’s biggest play. But Bobo going all ultra-conservative again in the fourth quarter frustrated even his boss, who said he wished they’d handled it differently after Georgia got the ball back with just over 8 minutes and only burned a couple of minutes, going three-and-out playing it safe on the ground. That “pretty much put more pressure on the defense there,” Richt said. “If we’re in that situation again, we’d better be able to put it away.”

No arguments there, coach. …

Despite several holding calls, the Dogs’ reshuffled offensive line did a better job Saturday and the result was no sacks and no interceptions thrown by Murray. Let’s hope that progression continues. …

The showdown between what was then the nation’s No. 1 team at converting third downs (Tennessee) and the No. 2 team at defending them (Georgia) definitely went to the Dogs. The Vols had been converting 62.1 percent of the time, but against UGA they were only four-for-13 (30.8 percent). …

Speaking of tough defense, the third quarter was a jewel, with the Vols limited to 11 yards of offense. …

The Bulldogs radio network guys had a tough time picking a player of the game until they took a look at the stats, where Mike Gilliard again had a standout performance. He led the team with 12 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a broken up pass. Hard to do any better than that. …

Finally, amid all the talk about the schedule having Georgia in the “driver’s seat” in the SEC East, it’s good to hear Murray keeping things in perspective. “We’ve got to keep chugging,” he said. With South Carolina owning the tie-breaker against the Dogs, “We’re still not in control right now of our own destiny. We can’t worry about that. We have to worry about Vanderbilt next week and continue to get wins.”

Well said.

I for one was not impressed by Mark Richt, Aaron Murray or Cromwell. Bray had an off night, we play that game 10 more times and Vols win 9 of them in Neeland.

No wonder you guys lost to Boise and Spurrier, weak offense.

We were coming back at the end – had your guys not injured Bray he was poised to score a TD with 3 or 4 minutes left, then we would recover onside kick and score again to win.

Also the TV announcers pointed out the refs were on your side all night and blew MULTIPLE pass interference calls on your guy Robinson.

We’re a young team but will win the East next year, too many injuries and young players this year.

VOL NATION – First , its CROWELL and you’d better get used to seeing him run through your puke orange colored jerseys for the next 2-3 years…and he’d have had more TDs”‘had your guys not injured” him during the first quarter . I never once heard any announcer ‘point out ‘ that the refs were ‘on our side’. They agreed with them on most all replays, etc. I’ll enjoy seeing the scores from ol Rocky Top the next several weeks.

There were blown calls all over the field. The announcer also said it was a fumble and it belonged to UGA. The refs could not even get that right with a clear cut video!!! If UT dominated and would win 9 out of 10 it would not happen running the ball as they had minus 10 yds rushing. I felt bad when Bray went down but Simms seemed to step right up. The Vols will be better next year(Though so will UGA) but this year was the Dawgs turn(as will next) to be dominant. Hold your chin high and lose with class, as hard as that may be at UT!

@Vol Nation
There were calls missed on both sides of the ball. I watched the game and never heard the announcers say the refs were on UGA’s side. Missed calls, yes, but they said the same on both teams. Also, this game should’ve been a blowout if Murray would’ve been more accurate with his throws. Your DB’s were getting beat all night long but Murray overthrew 3 wide open routes that would’ve been TD’s.
Oh, and Bray’s injury was a total accident. That happens all the time when your line can’t block and you try to throw the ball. You’re eventually gonna hit somebody’s helmet on a follow through.
I feel for you, though. Good luck with LSU and BAMA the next 2 games. ;)

I listened to CMR’s post game interview. I believe he was discussing the long pass to Mitchell, but I’m sure he said that Bobo was second guessing his (own) decision to call the play and discussing it with the offensive staff, when CMR chimed in and said to run it.
That’s what concerns me. Bobo is in the wind with his decision making. The 4th quarter was where he almost allowed them to come back. When are we gonna free this guys future?

you’re kidding yourself if you think your team could beat ours 9 out of 10 times. in point of fact, you’ve lost 7 of the last 11 and 3 of the last 4. the fact of the matter is that your secondary is bad and you can’t run the ball. not a recipe for sustained success.

No other team in America would still have Bobo as the offensive coordinator. We might as well get use to Bobo staying the coordinator unless Adams sanctions the change which has a zero chance of happening with Bobo’s wife being Barbara Dooley’s sister’s daughter. An offensive coordinator who has made it with a SEC team for over 3 years should be making $750K at least. Bobo makes 400K and is over paid. What does that tell you?

I promise I will never understand this fan base you find a reason to complain about EVERYTHING. A win is a win whether the score is 1-0 or 100-0. Since everybody loves the praise the almighty nick saban why dont you go back and look at the scores from their 2009 chamoionship team they blew out 3 sec teams that year ark, miss st and uf in the sec championship game and im willing to bet no bama fan cried about the margin of victory all they wanted was a win. When bama beat uf this year once they scored 24 early points they eased off of the gas they scored 14 pts by running right up the middle (uf just couldnt stop richardson) once brantley left the game uf dang near gave up bama could have went deep into the playbook and scored 60 but instead saban put the game in the hands of the defense to hold on to the lead. Last year when auburn won how many teams did they blow out? (dont worry I will wait) when lsu won in 2007 they blew out 2 teams miss st and va tech. So why is it ok for everybody else to build a lead and turn the game over to the defense but when uga does it its a problem? In case you didnt know you dont get an extra victory for style points just win the game.

I’m a pretty conservative person but wow he is ultra-conservative! We don’t really run many zone read routes to where our WRs sit in the soft zone like South Carolina did to us last year over and over again. I would of like to see that more myself to move the ball and eat some of that timeclock when we are ahead. But I am all for keeping the ball on the ground completely when we are up by 2 possessions in the 4th quarter. At the end of the day we gotta move the chains in the 4th.

The better team won – enough said.

Tennessee is playing hard – just too much youth at this time. Vols should be in a much better position to compete next year – need to chalk up this year to growing pains as it will get ugly.

I am afraid the media will place D.Dooley on the “HOT SEAT” and perpetuate this label to create controversy and conversation in order to sell advertising. The program had to start completely over after 2 coaching changes.

3)Why are some of you looking at the SEC CG? Just need to worry about the next opponent. Personally, I’m would not want to look forward to playing LSU (who will beat Bama.
Some of you need to get off your “high horse” and just be thankful we are not playing as bad as last year. This year should build the teams confidence up for the next few years. Nine to ten wins this year is a huge improvement.

NOt sure if UGA can win the SEC East.

Why?

South Carolina and UGA both have one SEC loss – with USCe haven beaten Georgia.
South Carolina still has to play Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi State & Florida.
South Carolina will probably run the table – or lose only one of these games.
Arkansas will be the big test.
MS State is not good at all.
Tennessee has lost our best stars and will be whipped mentally after playing Bama/LSU back to back before taking on Carolina.
Florida has lost 2 starting QB’s
Carolina will be better with Shaw at QB.
Projected finish 6-2 or 5-3 at worst

UGA has to play Vanderbilt, Florida, KY and Auburn.
UGA will lose at least one of these games – and prbably to both Florida and Auburn.
Project finish 5-3
Wins over Vandy and KY are given.
Florida owns UGA and will win again in JAX.
Auburn is interesting and overachieving this year – their staff is much better than UGA’s and this is such a wierd series – gotta go with Auburn.

USC wins SEC East – get’s blown out again in SEC Title game.
UGA goes 8-4 – and wins their bowl game – going 9-4
Tennessee – well – here’s looking to 2012! Way too early prediction – 8-4 / 9-3 type of year.

In the 1986 Jan Kemp trial, O. Hale Almand Jr., a lawyer for UGA, offered a justification for the favorable treatment accorded the athletes, citing a hypothetical player. “We may not make a university student out of him,” he told the jury, “but if we can teach him to read and write, maybe he can work at the post office rather than as a garbageman when he gets through with his athletic career.”

That trial exposed UGA for the football factory that it was, and exposed Vince Dooley as a fraud and a sleazebag. It also derailed Dooley’s plans for a political career. That’s why we see the decrepit old fraud doing TV commercials even now.

Mark Richt is just the latest in a line of sleazy UGA coaches who coddle athletes and discard them after four years of football. He recruits illiterate morons he knows aren’t smart enough for college, but he doesn’t care, as long as they help him line his pockets with millions of dollars each year.

BobDawg – agree – our AD made some poor decisions.
1. Getting rid of fulmer one season removed from winning the SEC East.
2. Hiring Kiffin was a gamble – that has set Tennessee Football back to a total rebuild.

Richt is a class act – think about it – UGA goes 10-3, 8-5 and 6-7.

8-5 following the loss of Stafford and Moreno
Richt fires Matinez and starts over D.

6-7 – new DC and Staff with new 3/4 defense
New QB
After this season – new S&C, let’s the bad seeds off the bus.

Now – the defense is playing well.
Offense is inconsistent – but depending on freshan RB and best WR is also a freshman.
UGA mixing in a lot of youth.

Anyone that follows college football understands that eventually – a staff will hit a down cycle for many reasons – recruiting did not pan out, coaches may get too comfortable, coachig attrition, bad luck, injuries, etc. it all comes into play.

So UGA had to bottom out and is rebuilding as well – not as much at UT is rebuilding – but UGA is having to rebuild – and the improvement is starting to show.

I hope UGA is patient with Richt and does not make the same mistake we did with prematurely letting Fulmer go.

It’s hard to win in Neyland even when we take good, mature teams there – the fact that we won with a very young team says kudos to the Dawgs. We will be getting key players back in the next few weeks and Mitchell will be OK as will Crowell. This team is growing up before our eyes – enjoy the process, these kids are going to be players soon. Are we going to the SEC CG? Maybe, maybe not…if we do, can we beat ‘Bama or LSU…..they both look invincible right now but anything can happen on a football field. Not worried about that right now….right now I would like to see this team continue to gel and get better every week – if we do that, by the end of the year we might have something to brag about – I admire Richt for taking the heat after the first two losses and turning it around despite all of the negativity – it takes a strong man to walk out of the fire. And as to all of this BS about his record against ranked teams lately – HOW ABOUT 100 WINS IN 10 and 1/2 SEASONS! Not too shabby in the best conference in America. Sorry Bill, just don’t see it. Dogs have wins over some of the weakest teams in the SEC and overall D-1, so UGA has not had their stress test yet, Florida. Although with the amount of injuries, UGA could finally squeak out a win against the Gators, since the Gators are so banged up.

Everyone is basically excited about nothing, and CMR will do just enough to keep his job. He remains on track to be 7-5 this year, with additional losses to Vanderbilt, GT, Auburn and/or Florida.

Best called game of the year for Coach Bobo, maybe CMR was interjecting on some plays. Kept Vols D off balance most of 3 quarters. If Murray and King could get their act together could easily have had a couple scores on those long passes and also on that slant near end zone wide open. Bobo can’t throw it for him or catch it for King. And the dummys calling for throwing it on 2nd and 56 and 3rd and 57 know very little about football, don’t give them a chance for a pick in that situation.

100 wins in less than 11 years, not many schools have a program that successful. Predict another 100 in the next 10 years and CMR will break Coach Dooleys.

Couple remaining games will be close, but Dawgs can and probably will win out.

Don’t blame it on the refs……UGA is clearly the better team. Physically, we’re bigger, stronger and faster. That’s reality, so live with it. Our defense dominated without our best pass rusher, and we haven’t had Alec Ogletree since the first quarter of the Boise game. He is our best player on defense. BTW, our whole defense returns next year except for Deangelo Tyson and Brandon Boykin. See you in Athens next year to make it 3 in a row over the Vols. The dumbest thing Tennessee ever did was firing Phil Fulmer. You think Kiffin and Dooley are better than Fulmer? Fulmer was born in Tenn, played for Tenn and loves UT. Kiffin is a pretty boy born with a silver spoon in his mouth and Dooley (I love his dad) is a mamma’s boy with perfect hair. Dooley should be a politician, not a football coach. The fact that the UGA D completely shut your rushing game down, making you a 1 dimensional offense probably had more to do with it than Bray having an “off day”. Offficiating was subpar as it is every single game. Referees in every sport, college and professional, suck. So if Bray hadn’t gotten hurt then the kicker’s accuracy would’ve automatically been better and you would’ve recoverd the onside kick and then scored again??? Is that what I’m hearing?? Pretty presumptious if you ask me.

I love the defense!! TG is doing a fine job!! UT is young, but will be better, I’m glad we’re young and will be better as well next year. Did anyone else get the vibe that CMR is taking a more hands on role with the offense? Calling the Mitchell bomb and going for it on 4th. Hear his comments about “letting off the gas” ? Bring on Vandy!!
Also, UF is out of the race for the East, it’s UGA or SC. No way UF beats SC and UGA. I see UGA over UF and USC losing to UF. Then UGA droping to LSU in the Dome.
Also, yes UGA would give Ark all it could take right now. AU is lucky. Ark is a 3rd team in the west or east right now. Go Dawgs!!!

Agreed. Considering these are still the minds of boys in the bodies of men, they require affirmations and confidence. IMHO, the coach has to let them know not only does he have that confidence but, he (and they) should always expect that the yardage will be gained. Going for it on 4th and 1 is always a no brainer or should be once the 50 yard line has been crossed. The exception being when the running game is not working

The athletic history of UGA is full of so many sordid, sleazy incidents – dating back to Vince Dooley and continuing through Mark Richt – that it’s impossible to overlook. The school has come to stand for drunkenness and lawlessness, coddling of illiterate athletes who should never have been admitted to college, and rampant cheating by coaches.

Try Wikipedia: Bowl eligibility

Bowl eligibility in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) College Football is the standard through which teams become available for selection to participate in postseason bowl games. When a team achieves this state, it is described as “bowl-eligible”. Under current regulations, in order for this to occur, a team must have a winning record, which may include one win against a Division I FCS scholarship-awarding[1] opponent, or win their conference, and the team must not be on probation. The NCAA allows one victory per season over a Division I FCS (formerly I-AA) team to count toward an FBS team’s bowl eligibility..

I may be wrong, but, considering this, I think we’re more than half-way there.

If , by some MIRACLE, GT could win out, they will never even “sniff” top 5 in country, so NO CHANCE they play in NC game… (wait, have to laugh at that before I finish..hahahahahahaha). Last, I would LOVE to see Bama against your little team, they would need to hire extra ambulance crews as they would be hauling Tech backs out of the stadium 2 per trip… Hahahahahahaha, you are just SAD.

The game was not overly impressive by any stretch of the imagination. A win is a win, yes, but if I was a dog fan, I would be a little suspect of the rest of the season with bobo at the helm. and yes, the Maryland win was just as scary to me. No, we will not be in the title game mainly b/c of strength of schedule, assuming we win out, which is a big assumption with the games we got coming up. Also, probation is probably an issue. But when the best argument dog fans can come up with for this seasons win over us is simply that Tech would lose out in the SEC, I am starting to like our chances a little bit.

When coaches in the SEC make the comment that UGA is no surprise anymore it doesn’t take a lot to prepare for them. There were much truth to your statement in the last 3 years. However, you should keep in mind that with such a young squad as the Dawgs have this year (out of necessity) there is limits on what coaches can develop for a gameplan. The playbook just isn’t as versatile as it can be with upperclassman starters. I’m not Richt fan either but, there are realities to the situation he seems to shoulder too much blame for. I give MR much credit for moving out the bad attitude dead weight from the team and playing what seems to be some young yet hungry Dawgs. Don’t expect miracles this year. You would be well withing reason to expect them next year however. That is if Richt can retain his job until then.

I believe Murray has to get his timing better with his receivers…You can tell what a difference in speed Mitchell has over our other receivers by seperation and Murray’s passes.
Murray seems to overshoot everyone and underthrow Mitchell…He has the arm strength but he can’t have Mitchell waiting on passes like he did against TN.

I am starting to think Grantham’s Junk Yard D will save Richt’s job, and that we could be back to relevance in short order. In my mind the key ingredient missing from 2005 through 2009 was a great defensive coordinator. I know ‘05 and ‘07 were good years, but Van Gorder’s teaching hadn’t worn off yet in ‘05 (until late in the season against AU and WVU) and we could have won a championship in ‘07 had we had consistent defensive play early in the year. It appears as though it has taken Grantham a year or so to get the 3-4 cooking, but I am starting to believe.

The aggressive playcalling early defintely set a tone – even if it didn’t result in TD’s right away. UGA was moving the ball quite easily early until Crowell got hurt – the drop off when he’s out of the game or limited is startling. Samuel is useless as a a RB, and Thomas is a nice changeup for 5/6 runs a game – but there is no one behind Isiah. When Crowell returned in the 2nd half – the offense clicked for two scores – and would have had a third, had it not been for 4 consecutive holding calls (and two Personal Fouls) called in succession.

The Dawgs will go as Crowell goes – if he’s healthy, Murray manages the game, and with that defense clicking (and still getting Ogeltree back in a few weeks) – UGA has a legitimate shot to finish 9-3 or 10-2 – if that gets them to SECC – then it’s a very likely loss to Bama or LSU – but would be a satisfying conclusion to what appeared to be another lost season.

If Crowell goes down – all bets are off – Dawgs will struggle to get 8 wins. Dawgs need to address RB depth in off season – and put Samuel back at LB.

As much as I hope we beat the Gators like rented mules this and every other year, lest not forget that while they were man handled by Bama and LSU those two teams are as good as anyone in college football this year. If you think for a minute that the Gators won’t try their hardest to beat UGA and salvage as much as their season as they can your nuts. VANDY does not have a good team. SABAN went easy on them. They could have scored another 14 points or more. SABAN played alot of 2nd an 3rd stringers the entire night.

Even BLAKE SIMS got in at RB…………………….The GAINESVILLE GA player. BAMA played their 3rd and 4th string RB’S.

UGA should beat VANDY handily. VANDY did not beat anyone. When they lost to South Carolina with a score of 21-3, I knew they were no different.

Georgia beat them 43-0 last year in Athens. It won;t be that bad because it is in Nashville, the stadium is an uninspiring dump and their defense is not too bad. Their offense is horrible and our defense is getting better every week

A 10-2 UGA could go to the Chic Fil A Bowl and that will not make the alumni happy. This tie so far with SC is going to hurt UGA badly, as SC will possibly only lose again to Arkansas. We need them to lose at least two times and that is the way that it is.

Vandy, KY and AU and Florida, GT are huge for UGA , because if we end up 9-3, we will be in the Music CIty Bowl or Shreveport ………………unhappy the alums will be.

Chances are very high of UGA in an extremly low level bowl game with a 9-3 type of season. This scenario will get CMR gone.

No matter how we cut it …………………..low level bowl is what UGA is faced with this year. We are not even in the top 35. I cannot believe we have sunk this low. Arkansas and Alabama and LSU and possibly SC, will bump UGA from really good bowl opps to very bad bowl. These schools will get Sugar, Capital One, Cotton and Chic Fil A or Gator Bowl bids, and UGA willl end up in Nashville or Shreveport.

This season is pretty much blown with our two ugly losses. Wait and see.

Let me use a little UGA fan logic here….

UT missed a field goal and had an extra point blocked…that’s 4 points. UT “gave” UGA a touchdown when it snapped the ball over Bray’s head and the punter shanked a punt giving UGA the ball inside field goal range. Now we’re up to 7 points (I’ll give UGA the field goal). Two phanton pass interference calls gave UGA at least 6 more points when UT has UGA stopped on third down. One of those calls led to a UGA touchdown, but I’ll go ahead and give them the field goals. So…that’s 13 gift points.

So…in my opinion, UT should have won the game 16 to 11. Now before you attack my post, UGA fans did the same thing when recounting the SC game…you simply subtracted 28 points and claimed a 42-17 victory.

Must take exception with you.

Mitchell did not slow down to catch the ball; rather, he decelerated somewhat after catching the pass because he pulled his hamstring after only running a couple of steps.

You must have seen a different angle on the play than I had on my TV. You recken’?

My first point, UNC isnt anywhere near the level of UT (with bray) or MSU (remember, they gave LSU a run for their money earlier in the season). Tech has a good team but hasnt played the good teams in the ACC yet so the jury is still out. Second with regard to Florida, they are having a hard time this year. Even with Brantley its hard to run pro style when the majority of UFs players are from the spread mold. Muschamps gotta recruit for his offense and when he does, UF will get better but still a year away. Finally, UGA has a realistic shot of winning out. Our toughest SEC games left are at home. The GT game is in ATL but as i said, we dont know how good that team really is when stacked up against real competition. Also UGA has the best Defense its had in a WHILE and now the Grantham hire is looking alot smarter than it did last year. GO DAWGS

@VolNation: blown calls by the referees and luck always have an impact on a game. Poor execution by players does, too. Murray overthrew T. King twice — Dawgs should have won by a bigger margin again Tennessee, and Dawgs should have beaten SC chickens. In the end, the only thing that matters is the score — 20-12 in this case. Boo hoo. Can’t wait for Tennessee hillbillies to come to Athens next year for a beat-down.

Pee-on-smokey, you musta had some pee breaks Sat nite, Murray made 4 terrible overthrows to wide open WRs. One was to bad the WR didn’t even reach for it.

I’m not drinking any kool aid yet but 4 wins in a row beats what we had after the first two weeks. We have a talented but young squad – we need some consistent line play on offense the most. The defense seems to be growing nicely. With a little luck and a few bounces we wwill have a good year. But as of right now, ‘Bama and Lsu are the cream of the crop. Florida has a good team, but they are not on that level right now. We will have our hands full to get a win from them as usual. As for Auburn, I hope we kick their ass and repay every cheap hit we got from them last year. And as for Tech – they can be ranked whatever and we’ll still bust their chops. The ONLY thing UGA proved is that it could beat a team whose only wins were against Montana, Cincinnati, and Buffalo. And yet you guys like to bark how awesome the win was?? As for the 4th straight week – UGA hasn’t proven anything – except they can’t beat a Top 20 team.
I can’t understand what all the barking is about – the 4 wins come against some pretty pitiful teams – Coastal Carolina, Ole Missy (Vandy beat them 30-7), Missery State (a very bad team), and now TN (who is 113th in the nation in rushing -wow, what a powerhouse).

Well good news, you don’t have to give Richt credit for that. He didn’t critisize the play calling in that series. Who on earth do you folks think he is talking to on that headset? They did exactly what they all agreed to do. WHAT he critisized is that they didn’t move the ball any better doing what they “should” have been able to do.

I’d be interested to see anyone in here call that series any differently as well. They brought Crowell back in the game and tried to get some yards. Its not like they where taking a knee. The play actually blew up on 2nd and 6 (and outside run that was good call) or they might have converted on 3rd. BUT 3 and long from their own 19, OF COURCE you run the ball and punt if need. TN had not moved the ball all night, down by 2 TD, and one TO left. Only a complete idiot is throwing the ball in that situation.

Granted it’s no good for some coach heros tossing around cliche’s, but for winning a ballgame, it was spot on.

It’s also interesting how injuries could be a blessing in Disguise for the Dawgs… We are building depth on the fly like Gilliard, Herrera etc. Also, having a stout D is now changing the game for CMR on offense…The 4th down calls on that first drive caught me totally by surprise and I noticed he had a play sheet with him during the game… He is not worried about leaving the D in an occasional bind as they can stop a team now and that has been missing since the Van Gorder D Days…. We get by Vandy, get everyone back and this end of the year run could be interesting…

Stop pounding your chest and take those beer goggles you have off

Take a look at the defense since KY game last year until now. You can see there has been improvement

The offense has not. Lack of using players like figgens and charles for example once again showing booboo has no game plan and fails to use the talent he has

The fans have to raise the roof booing because this bunch cannot even go for it on 4th an inches against Miss St but now we do

This offense couldnt score a TD until the 3rd qtr against a lousy Tenn team nor could it score against Miss and MissSt in the 2nd half but hey lets run the clock out mentality continues to rain supreme here

If you think this team is going somewhere with our play calling on offense your sadly mistaken

Now kudos to Gratham he has shown drastic improvement and I will be glad to give him credit.

But do me a favor dont come on here at the end of the year acting like we on our way to great things next year if we win out because we are not with our inept offense. Against 5 lousy teams up and coming

The schedule we have will allow that as I said earlier this year that this team should go 11-1 with this schedule and it looks like Im not far off.

If we get better play calling ASAP then I will change my mind but Im not impressed against the sorry defenses we have played and we still look bad on offense

2009 just seemed like the shadow of 2008 to me. Bad vibes all around.

And if you think about it, why should we have been excited coming into the season last year? Lost your big star players, the talent level not where it should have been, an unpopular staff, and a Head Coach having to spend his energy defending everybody from top to bottom, and some serious legitamate [SIC] problem areas on the field that would have been a drag despite none of the above.

If UGA was back it would have shown a killer instinct and made short work of a middling reconstruction project like Tennessee. You don’t outlast mediocre teams if your team isn’t mediocre you knock em’ out the box. Bama and LSU both destroyed a rebuilding Florida team that recently beat the Vol 33-23. UGA has not dominated any of the three mediocre SEC opponents they have played and it also must be said the UGA has the softest SEC schedule of any team in the league. Seems like everybody else in the league has faced Bama, LSU, or Arkansas, but the finesse, soft scheduled Georgia Bulldogs. Even SEC member to be, Texas A&M, played Arkansas, and they aren’t officially in the league yet.

So let’s keep it real reprobates and delusionalists UGA has not won anything yet. It’s sad to watch and listen to mediocre and ignorant UGA fans thump their chest about outlasting mediocre opponents. UGA still has not gotten any national respect for closely winning out over sub-par teams. Vanderbilt is annually sub-par, was beaten 34-0 by Bama. I’d like to see Richt dominate a annually sub-par, mediocre opponent for once. UGA 63 Vandy 3 would certainly raise a few eyebrows nationally, but its not gonna happen because its not in Richt’s DNA to blow a hapless or decent SEC team away. Florida is rebuilding and is a MUST win for 2-8 Richt. I know asking Richt to blow out UF is impossible for him and Bobo so a one point win over UF will have the insane, delusional kool-aid base demanding to be included in the BCS with two losses and demanding for UGA to offer Richt a long-term, multi-year extension with a lifetime seven figure buyout. These are what kind of FOOLS pose as UGA fans these days y’all !! LOL !!

UGA has a mediocre divided fanbase and you have no one to blame but Richt for that. Auburn is rebuilding and Tech will lose to Clemson, but will have a deceptive winning record over weak ACC teams. UGA didn’t win the only two games against ranked teams on their schedule and like Tech is feasting on cupcakes and conference frogs.

So please get real and accept the fact that UGA’s offense is poorly coached and very thin in depth at RB and O-line. There’s only one player that is a true running back but he’s starting to get beatup because he lacks stamina and the build to be a 25-30 carry SEC back. His primary backup is 5′-6″, 160 lbs, hardly SEC backup RB material, backed up by a plodding LB twice converted to RB. That situation alone is unacceptable for any title contending SEC team. I don’t have time to address the problems at QB, Offensive Line, and Offensive Coaching. At least it appears to be some progress on defense, but it’s deceptive when you play offensively challenged teams as UGA has played the last month. So before you pathetic delusionalists out there (and you know who you are) crown this team SEC champs try to refrain from continuing to look and sound like fools. Put down the kool-aid for once and keep it real. In the kindest of realities this team is still 2 to 3 years away from shedding its mediocre label. Even though you may be delusional, I still love y’all. Go Dawgs. Peace Out !!

Thanks, Stephen A. Smith, for your analysis.

Delusional is an apt word for many of our fans. Until reality is accepted, it’s going to be impossible to change our football program into what some of us would like it to be. We’re barely mediocre now, and have been for some years.

Achieving elite status on the national level is a tall order. The state of Georgia certainly furnishes the players to make it a realistic possibility. The University has the status to attract players from elsewhere, too.

Many of the problems within the football program, at all levels, have been exposed on the various AJC blogs, by literate, informed fans. It would be silly to conclude that everyone in a decision making position at UGA could be unaware of what is so obvious. The question is whether there is the will to change our football program into a true SEC and national title contender.

There are ample models to copy. As has been mentioned elsewhere, the Alabama program begins enforcing discipline before recruits are signed. This would be an example of something worth copying at UGA, and there are many more examples of how to do it right.

Our program has a long way to go, but we’ll never get there if we continue heading in the wrong direction. What wrong direction? What problems need to be fixed? Lack of depth, narcissistic players seeking NFL riches, poor discipline, unconditioned athletes – these problems and many more. Fixing these won’t give us a national title, but not fixing them will certainly keep the UGA football program in the 3rd tier of the SEC.

Here we are though, lumped with Vandy, Kentucky, and the current version of Tennessee. Seeing if we can back into a SEC East title is far from top drawer. We’d all love to run the table, but, other than Kentucky, how sure are we of another win, even against the 2nd and 3rd tier opponents remaining.

Vandy has a chance against our team. Auburn has a good chance. We’re prone to lose to Florida. And, a bad Tech team has been known to beat a good Georgia team (and vice versa). Our season is far from over.

The problem, however, is not getting through this season.

The problem is converting our barely mediocre football program into something similar to the true powerhouse programs, which will require an end to the delusion that UGA football is anything other than what it is. Barely beating the little sisters of the SEC is bad enough, but thinking it means anything is nuts.

Thanks South Ga Dawg 88. Why are you using facts when you could just say LSU, Alabama, and Auburn traditionally have owned UGA over the last ten years. Everyone knows that CMR loss to Alabama, LSU, Arkansas count as two losses while the wins only count as one. UGA has recovered and beaten teams that everyone said we would lose to. If I had a nickle for every one who came on here and said we would lose to Miss. State and Tennessee I would be rich right now. If UGA finishes 10-2 or 9-3 it will be a good season regardless.

Dividends are unlikely, because cold water is going to be thrown on this parade. As usual, there is some degree of optimism for this average program. UGA has won against some of the worst and weakest teams in college football, nonetheless, the SEC.

The UGA stress test begins the second half of the season, and if UGA fails to beat Florida who is down to their 4th and 5th strings, then it just affirms this program has tanked. The Philly newspapers are all over the Eagles and Andy Reid calling for him to be fired, even though he his record with the Eagles is strong.

Compared to this the Atlanta media market, and everyone upbeat about a 4-2 program, that is unranked and was drilled by 2 ranked teams.

Alabama, LSU, and OU are all in the running to at least play in a title game….what’s UGA doing? Yep, trying to win an SEC east, then get drilled by Alabama, UGA football is like ALTA, they are all about the bag tags (SEC East titles) and small salad plates (SEC Titles), but not the big plates (national championships)>

For one thing, Vol Nation is an idiot. Irrelevant of that fact, the play where a flag was thrown on the TN player for defensive interference against Orson Charles in the end zone, the announcer, Ed Cunningham said the flag was not a good call. The other announcer even questioned Cunningham about his opinion about the flag. The TN player was mugging Charles on that play, continuously, including up to the moment that the ball landed. Cunningham was much more pro TN than pro UGA. The other announcer was more neutral.

Jan Kemp was a deeply disturbed woman who led a life to which no rational human being would aspire. Consider: two suicide attempts, once by pills and once by stabbing herself multiple times in the chest with a butcher knife. She spent stretches in psychiatric wards and went to jail for almost a year for contempt of court. The rumors out there are much, much worse. But really, you don’t need to get into any of the rumor and innuendo to conclude that this woman had serious problems. Actually, given the climate in Athens in the early 80s, you’d have to be crazy to call out UGA on academic preferences for football players. That may be proof enough right there that she was nuts.

Vandy is a much better team than Tennessee. They better avoid the 2nd and 57’s penalties and not depend on short field and one long pass for the touch down opportunities. We need long slow drives resulting in touchdowns so the defense can be rested when they are on the field. No 3 and outs.

Maybe I should go get my doctorate at ‘Bama. If Georgia fans have their way, Richt will still be losing games in Athens by the time I finish. Then maybe, I can cheer on a reall winner. You Richt lovers are so blind and so desperate. It’s just sad really.
