Richt’s aggressive stance against Vols likely to pay dividends later

A few more thoughts about Georgia’s win over Tennessee in Knoxville …

There was a lot of talk after the game about Mark Richt’s more aggressive approach in the first half, when Georgia went for it three times on fourth-and-short yardage. That ran counter to the coach’s stance several times earlier in the season when he had declined to go for it on fourth (including twice against Mississippi State), peevishly answering his players’ complaints about it by saying that if you want to make a first down, you do it in the first three tries.

Richt obviously rethought that view this past week. “I wasn’t in the mood to go for it on fourth down last week,” he said, because he “didn’t like what we had prepared.” But in the week before playing the Vols, he said, “we did a good job of putting a plan together. I had more confidence in what the offensive staff put together, so I was more decisive with what to do because I had more faith in what we were doing and how we were going about it.”

You get the idea that maybe the head coach was a bit more involved in the offensive game planning last week.

The results weren’t so much evident on the scoreboard, as the Dogs didn’t manage to score touchdowns on the drives kept alive by Richt going for it on fourth down. But it probably paid off big-time with his players. As Aaron Murray put it: “It showed that he trusted us.”

That could pay dividends down the road. …

Mike Bobo deserves both bouquets and brickbats, as my junior high school newspaper used to say, for his playcalling Saturday night. He had Murray mix up short passes and the long ball, and that call to have it thrown to Malcolm Mitchell downfield when the Dogs were backed up on their own 7 was masterful and resulted in the game’s biggest play. But Bobo going all ultra-conservative again in the fourth quarter frustrated even his boss, who said he wished they’d handled it differently after Georgia got the ball back with just over 8 minutes and only burned a couple of minutes, going three-and-out playing it safe on the ground. That “pretty much put more pressure on the defense there,” Richt said. “If we’re in that situation again, we’d better be able to put it away.”

No arguments there, coach. …

Despite several holding calls, the Dogs’ reshuffled offensive line did a better job Saturday and the result was no sacks and no interceptions thrown by Murray. Let’s hope that progression continues. …

The showdown between what was then the nation’s No. 1 team at converting third downs (Tennessee) and the No. 2 team at defending them (Georgia) definitely went to the Dogs. The Vols had been converting 62.1 percent of the time, but against UGA they were only four-for-13 (30.8 percent). …

Speaking of tough defense, the third quarter was a jewel, with the Vols limited to 11 yards of offense. …

The Bulldogs radio network guys had a tough time picking a player of the game until they took a look at the stats, where Mike Gilliard again had a standout performance. He led the team with 12 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a broken up pass. Hard to do any better than that. …

Finally, amid all the talk about the schedule having Georgia in the “driver’s seat” in the SEC East, it’s good to hear Murray keeping things in perspective. “We’ve got to keep chugging,” he said. With South Carolina owning the tie-breaker against the Dogs, “We’re still not in control right now of our own destiny. We can’t worry about that. We have to worry about Vanderbilt next week and continue to get wins.”

Well said.

GT Joe: How do see Vandy putting that kind of number up on a d that has allowed 2 td scores in 4 games? BTW, GT will lose 4 out of 6 coming up. Mark it DOWN!

vandy wont score more than 10 points on us. They have no offense.
UGA wins easy this week end. And then a week off to rest up for the destruction of florida this year.

You lose all credibility(if you ever had any) when you predict Vandy beating UGA 38-14.

Vandy couldn’t score 38 points on UGA if UGA pulled the defense off of the field

Georgia beat them 43-0 last year in Athens. It won;t be that bad because it is in Nashville, the stadium is an uninspiring dump and their defense is not too bad. Their offense is horrible and our defense is getting better every week

I say 27-7 Georgia

WDE, I don’t think anybody is counting a W in Nashville, much less Jax, yet. One would have to be an idiot not to learn lessons that haven been taught to us over and over. I am just excited at the way the defense is coming together, and with a little pressure off the O, I think things COULD start to roll. I am cautiously optimistic. It feels better than the pessimism I have felt over the last 3 or 4 years.

Regardless of Vandy’s record this year, I’m certain we’ll get their best.

They always play us tough up there.

I just hope we can play our best. If we do, we’ll win. .. Go Dawgs!

Is it possible FL is protecting some of their players by not playing them, while they know they have no chance against LSU?

If Brantley can pop up against UGA and SC, I think FL still have a good chance in the EAST.

Brantley was unbelievable against Bama before he got injured.

A 10-2 UGA could go to the Chic Fil A Bowl and that will not make the alumni happy. This tie so far with SC is going to hurt UGA badly, as SC will possibly only lose again to Arkansas. We need them to lose at least two times and that is the way that it is.

Vandy, KY and AU and Florida, GT are huge for UGA , because if we end up 9-3, we will be in the Music CIty Bowl or Shreveport ………………unhappy the alums will be.

Chances are very high of UGA in an extremly low level bowl game with a 9-3 type of season. This scenario will get CMR gone.

No matter how we cut it …………………..low level bowl is what UGA is faced with this year. We are not even in the top 35. I cannot believe we have sunk this low. Arkansas and Alabama and LSU and possibly SC, will bump UGA from really good bowl opps to very bad bowl. These schools will get Sugar, Capital One, Cotton and Chic Fil A or Gator Bowl bids, and UGA willl end up in Nashville or Shreveport.

This season is pretty much blown with our two ugly losses. Wait and see.

UGA class of 71 & 73

Joey, I am not sure about your offense, man. With a good QB, SC will have a very good 1-2 punch with Jeffrey and Lattimore.

The thing that hurts SC is their QB with Garcia, which allowed Auburn neutralized Lattimore.

This year’s FL team actually is not a bad team at all. They have 2 speedsters and NFL-like Brantley. The things against them is they have to LSU and BAMA. Now Brantley is injured.

Otherwise, FL should be better than SC and UGA. SC’s problem is with Garcia. UGA has talents, but comes together a little too slow.

florida will end up with 3 or 4 sec loses.
S carolina could end up wtih 3 or 4 loses.
UGA really is in the drivers seat. there schedule is favorable. all they have to do is win out in their sec games.
which are Florida, Auburn, Kentucky and vandy.
I think that is very do-able this year.

They look very ordinary at best. They beat the CREMEPUFFS but can not beat the BIG BOYS.

UGA should beat them also.

@afan, I am afraid with the Vols playing LSU and Bama the next two weekends and Bray already out, they will be too short-handed to give Spurrier a run. I have only slightly higher hope for Miss State this weekend. At least it’s an 11am Eastern game this weekend and maybe Carolina will come in flat. Our better hopes are for Arky and Florida. But I hate to pull for the Gators and it won’t matter if we don’t beat them in a few weeks.
