Richt’s aggressive stance against Vols likely to pay dividends later

A few more thoughts about Georgia’s win over Tennessee in Knoxville …

There was a lot of talk after the game about Mark Richt’s more aggressive approach in the first half, when Georgia went for it three times on fourth-and-short yardage. That ran counter to the coach’s stance several times earlier in the season when he had declined to go for it on fourth (including twice against Mississippi State), peevishly answering his players’ complaints about it by saying that if you want to make a first down, you do it in the first three tries.

Richt obviously rethought that view this past week. “I wasn’t in the mood to go for it on fourth down last week,” he said, because he “didn’t like what we had prepared.” But in the week before playing the Vols, he said, “we did a good job of putting a plan together. I had more confidence in what the offensive staff put together, so I was more decisive with what to do because I had more faith in what we were doing and how we were going about it.”

You get the idea that maybe the head coach was a bit more involved in the offensive game planning last week.

The results weren’t so much evident on the scoreboard, as the Dogs didn’t manage to score touchdowns on the drives kept alive by Richt going for it on fourth down. But it probably paid off big-time with his players. As Aaron Murray put it: “It showed that he trusted us.”

That could pay dividends down the road. …

Mike Bobo deserves both bouquets and brickbats, as my junior high school newspaper used to say, for his playcalling Saturday night. He had Murray mix up short passes and the long ball, and that call to have it thrown to Malcolm Mitchell downfield when the Dogs were backed up on their own 7 was masterful and resulted in the game’s biggest play. But Bobo going all ultra-conservative again in the fourth quarter frustrated even his boss, who said he wished they’d handled it differently after Georgia got the ball back with just over 8 minutes and only burned a couple of minutes, going three-and-out playing it safe on the ground. That “pretty much put more pressure on the defense there,” Richt said. “If we’re in that situation again, we’d better be able to put it away.”

No arguments there, coach. …

Despite several holding calls, the Dogs’ reshuffled offensive line did a better job Saturday and the result was no sacks and no interceptions thrown by Murray. Let’s hope that progression continues. …

The showdown between what was then the nation’s No. 1 team at converting third downs (Tennessee) and the No. 2 team at defending them (Georgia) definitely went to the Dogs. The Vols had been converting 62.1 percent of the time, but against UGA they were only four-for-13 (30.8 percent). …

Speaking of tough defense, the third quarter was a jewel, with the Vols limited to 11 yards of offense. …

The Bulldogs radio network guys had a tough time picking a player of the game until they took a look at the stats, where Mike Gilliard again had a standout performance. He led the team with 12 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a broken up pass. Hard to do any better than that. …

Finally, amid all the talk about the schedule having Georgia in the “driver’s seat” in the SEC East, it’s good to hear Murray keeping things in perspective. “We’ve got to keep chugging,” he said. With South Carolina owning the tie-breaker against the Dogs, “We’re still not in control right now of our own destiny. We can’t worry about that. We have to worry about Vanderbilt next week and continue to get wins.”

Well said.

Still @ the BAR…….No son, eYe am an old dude. UGA still has a way to go to be a major player for sure. But we have at least played a few pretty decent football teams. eYe don’t think you and gt joey doughy can say that about GT now, can you? GT is off to a good start thanks to a weak schedule and finally addressing the need to throw the ball on occassion. Talk this mess you do now after you play someone somewhat better than a high school squad. Still think you better stick with the warm milk unless it’s too strong!!! BAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Paul, you are so funny!!!!!!! BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!

I know it took a lot for you to say, GT Joe.

Appreciate it, and enjoy your posts.

As I stated to Still@theBAR, I hope GT is undefeated when we play on November 26th, and that we play our best against your best.

Regards.

old time dog: Gt beat a 5-1 UNC team, who has UGA beat? Your wins are against teams that are 0-7 in the SEC.

Vol Nation, like most Vols have an over inflated sense of their abilities. Lets see…TN has beaten the powerhouses of Montana, Cincinnati, Buffalo, and rolled over and played dead at FL. YET, had “Bray not gotten hurt they were going to beat UGA.” Guess they were saving it all for the end!! Bahahahaha

“How much longer will Richt stick with Bobo. I mean, I can’t imagine his play calling against a defense like Alabama’s or LSU’s. I mean, let it loose a little and let the kids play.”

I’m fairly certain he has called the plays in wins over both. Thanks.

RamboDog: Good research. However, most Dawg fans do not count the “98 & ‘99 losses to tech. As I recall the ‘98 game was a Jasper Sanks fumble, which wasn’t, and the “99 game was a Joe Hamilton fumble which wasn’t called. Those were 2 CRUCIAL game changing calls that BOTH went tech’s way!!!!!

Totally agree with bh. UGA is a mediocre team….There is no way we could compete against Bama or LSU. So tired of the conservative Offensive game that is at UGA right now. The past few years it has not worked. Defense has improved, but nobody’s talking about us anymore. When coaches in the SEC make the comment that UGA is no surprise anymore it doesn’t take a lot to prepare for them. Embarrassing There is no excuse anymore with the talent we have, other than the coaches don’t know what to do with it. No matter what I’m a Dawg thru and thru. Step up Richt the SEC gets better and better and UGA stays the same.

Still @ the Bar boy…… Wrong. UGA might be a loss GT can’t afford. Kinda counting ahead ain’t ya? Let the season run its course because as of now you have won 6 games. Granted the rest of the schedule ain’t too tough either but you still got to win em’, you can’t just talk em’ into being victories. We lost 2 games and could conceivably lose 2 or 3 more but eYe don’t honestly think GT could beat Boise St. or SC. You boys better eat your fish but lay off Al’s tartar recipe. GT’s defense is pretty suspect and your attempt at passing isn’t exactly intact quite yet. We have problems in a number of areas and better keep on trying to get better as well. If GT runs the gauntlet and gets a major bowl bid, great for you and Joey. You still won’t have much to crow about on this or any forum unless you can beat the one team you are obsessed about….UGA. eYe think we can be sure of lining up against GT. eYe don’t think UGA will be so scared we wouldn’t show up. Son you better stick with water, milk’s a little too heavy for you to handle. BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Fish and milk don’t mix anyway!!!BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

There were much truth to your statement in the last 3 years. However, you should keep in mind that with such a young squad as the Dawgs have this year (out of necessity) there is limits on what coaches can develop for a gameplan. The playbook just isn’t as versatile as it can be with upperclassman starters. I’m not Richt fan either but, there are realities to the situation he seems to shoulder too much blame for. I give MR much credit for moving out the bad attitude dead weight from the team and playing what seems to be some young yet hungry Dawgs. Don’t expect miracles this year. You would be well withing reason to expect them next year however. That is if Richt can retain his job until then.

By your standards GT is also not bowl eligible yet since they played that powerhouse FCS school Western Carolina. That makes UGA 1-0 vs FCS and GT 1-0 vs FCS. Enjoy your stupid rants about UGA’s weak scheduling vs GTs incredibly tough first 6 games tho

Tennessee DEEEstroyed Cincy

Cincy DEEEstroyed NC State

Tech struggled to stop NC State

UGA dominated UT’s offense, -20 yards rushing.

Comparing scores down’t always work but these scores are showing a trend for Tech that must be worrisome to the average Tech fan which excludes delusional GT Joe.

You can’t fire Bobo. You keep him to recruit S GA and to coach the QB’s.

Richt can call his own plays and REALLY take this team back
