Richt’s aggressive stance against Vols likely to pay dividends later

Aaron Murray was pleased the Dogs had earned their head coach's trust. (Associated Press)

A few more thoughts about Georgia’s win over Tennessee in Knoxville …

There was a lot of talk after the game about Mark Richt’s more aggressive approach in the first half, when Georgia went for it three times on fourth-and-short yardage. That ran counter to the coach’s stance several times earlier in the season when he had declined to go for it on fourth (including twice against Mississippi State), peevishly answering his players’ complaints about it by saying that if you want to make a first down, you do it in the first three tries.

Richt obviously rethought that view this past week. “I wasn’t in the mood to go for it on fourth down last week,” he said, because he “didn’t like what we had prepared.” But in the week before playing the Vols, he said, “we did a good job of putting a plan together. I had more confidence in what the offensive staff put together, so I was more decisive with what to do because I had more faith in what we were doing and how we were going about it.”

You get the idea that maybe the head coach was a bit more involved in the offensive game planning last week.

The results weren’t so much evident on the scoreboard, as the Dogs didn’t manage to score touchdowns on the drives kept alive by Richt going for it on fourth down. But it probably paid off big-time with his players. As Aaron Murray put it: “It showed that he trusted us.”

That could pay dividends down the road. …

Mike Bobo deserves both bouquets and brickbats, as my junior high school newspaper used to say, for his playcalling Saturday night. He had Murray mix up short passes and the long ball, and that call to have it thrown to Malcolm Mitchell downfield when the Dogs were backed up on their own 7 was masterful and resulted in the game’s biggest play. But Bobo going all ultra-conservative again in the fourth quarter frustrated even his boss, who said he wished they’d handled it differently after Georgia got the ball back with just over 8 minutes and only burned a couple of minutes, going three-and-out playing it safe on the ground. That “pretty much put more pressure on the defense there,” Richt said. “If we’re in that situation again, we’d better be able to put it away.”

No arguments there, coach. …

Despite several holding calls, the Dogs’ reshuffled offensive line did a better job Saturday and the result was no sacks and no interceptions thrown by Murray. Let’s hope that progression continues. …

The showdown between what was then the nation’s No. 1 team at converting third downs (Tennessee) and the No. 2 team at defending them (Georgia) definitely went to the Dogs. The Vols had been converting 62.1 percent of the time, but against UGA they were only four-for-13 (30.8 percent). …

Speaking of tough defense, the third quarter was a jewel, with the Vols limited to 11 yards of offense. …

The Bulldogs radio network guys had a tough time picking a player of the game until they took a look at the stats, where Mike Gilliard again had a standout performance. He led the team with 12 tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and a broken up pass. Hard to do any better than that. …

Finally, amid all the talk about the schedule having Georgia in the “driver’s seat” in the SEC East, it’s good to hear Murray keeping things in perspective. “We’ve got to keep chugging,” he said. With South Carolina owning the tie-breaker against the Dogs, “We’re still not in control right now of our own destiny. We can’t worry about that. We have to worry about Vanderbilt next week and continue to get wins.”

Well said.

Bobo called a better game than the score indicated. He clearly saw that the Vols were vulnerable to the long pass but Murray kept overthrowing open receivers. Of course he finally did hit Mitchell in the 2nd half. Hit those guys running open and it would have been a blowout. I thought the substitution patterns were odd as well.

@ GT Joe

Try Wikipedia: Bowl eligibility

Bowl eligibility in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) College Football is the standard through which teams become available for selection to participate in postseason bowl games. When a team achieves this state, it is described as “bowl-eligible”. Under current regulations, in order for this to occur, a team must have a winning record, which may include one win against a Division I FCS scholarship-awarding[1] opponent, or win their conference, and the team must not be on probation. The NCAA allows one victory per season over a Division I FCS (formerly I-AA) team to count toward an FBS team’s bowl eligibility..

I may be wrong, but, considering this, I think we’re more than half-way there.

GT Joe, little problem with your logic. First, Tech will lose to Clemson and UGA at least. If , by some MIRACLE, GT could win out, they will never even “sniff” top 5 in country, so NO CHANCE they play in NC game… (wait, have to laugh at that before I finish..hahahahahahaha). Last, I would LOVE to see Bama against your little team, they would need to hire extra ambulance crews as they would be hauling Tech backs out of the stadium 2 per trip… Hahahahahahaha, you are just SAD.

GT Joe , You think CPJ has a play in his playbook for 2 and 57? I think not. He would just call a run too like every other OC would do. Backed up that far to your side of the field it would be stupid to do anything else. I guess that’s why you are not a football coach.

kerryb, I agree, UNLESS we were playing GT. Since they play defense so poorly, we could run that 71 yard post pattern to Mitchell…that would work !! :)

It’s amazing that Richt would admit publicly that he went into an SEC game (Miss. St.) without any 4th and short plays he had confidence in. That’s called not doing your job, on the part of both Richt and Bobo.

I agree with the other posters. If GT went undefeated (which they are not) If Bama or Lsu and Oklahoma go undefeated Tech would be playing in the Orange Bowl. They would not get a chance at a BCS title game.

Backed up, kerryb? you were at the 31 yard line.

CPJ might call a run, because tech can break 60 yard runs. We lead the nation in 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 yard plays. UGA? um no.

kerry, if we don’t get into the title game, we’ll be in the Orange, and we’ll get the loser of Bama/LSU. THAT will be fun.

UGA, on the other hand, will be lucky to get Central Florida again (or should I say, unlucky).

kerryb

Unless you are playing Georgia’s defense then you would only get -2 on that run.

Tech '10

The game was not overly impressive by any stretch of the imagination. A win is a win, yes, but if I was a dog fan, I would be a little suspect of the rest of the season with bobo at the helm. and yes, the Maryland win was just as scary to me. No, we will not be in the title game mainly b/c of strength of schedule, assuming we win out, which is a big assumption with the games we got coming up. Also, probation is probably an issue. But when the best argument dog fans can come up with for this seasons win over us is simply that Tech would lose out in the SEC, I am starting to like our chances a little bit.

Once again Richt tells all. That the offense wasn’t prepared in the previous games which was so very obvious in the Boise State game. Richt got involved in the offense? He’s not a CEO ( that’s Magarity), he’s paid to coach. We’re paying a few hundred thosand per minute for Richt actually coaching. What a deal.

Liar. Everyone said and still does that the vols are a CUPCAKE, no defense, no special teams, no running game, and NO TALENT.

No one thought the we would beat the vols, Ole Miss, Coastal Carolina – junk. Drink the Kool-Aid, we have beat a grand total of 3 SEC teams who combined to have 0 SEC wins and none of the wins by the teams who we beat are over a single team who beat anyone either.

No one thought we would beat the vols.
