Georgia-Tennessee: Something’s got to give on third down

Can Tyler Bray pick apart Georgia's defense like Kellen Moore did? (Associated Press)

Can Tyler Bray pick apart Georgia's defense like Kellen Moore did? (Associated Press)

With the Dogs traveling to Knoxville this week, I decided to check in with my old friend Joey Ledford, who’s been living in the Peach State for many years but still owes his primary allegiance to the land where folks dressed all in orange aren’t necessarily wearing leg-irons.

Here’s Joey’s Volunteer take on this year’s Georgia-Tennessee game:

The Vols have made a lot of progress since last year. We have a lot more depth, and we have a surprising amount of talent considering how young we are. Get this as a football stat — next year, when you guys had really better look out for us, we will have 19 returning starters.

All that said, we suffered a major setback on our fourth offensive play two weeks ago against Florida. Imagine losing A.J. Green for the season in your first series against a conference foe. That’s the equivalent of what happened to us when Justin Hunter tore his ACL. This guy was going to be all-world and will be again when he’s back next year.

I know you guys love Aaron Murray, and he is a good quarterback with great mobility, but I wouldn’t trade Tyler Bray for him even if you threw in a D-lineman or two. Bray is on his way to being the best Tennessee quarterback since a guy named Manning. He has already broken a couple of Peyton’s passing records and many more will fall in the future.

Will Tennessee win? Last year when Junkyard bravely turned over this space, I boldly predicted a Vol victory only to see us come out brain dead one week after the Baton Rouge disaster. You might remember that one — we lost our major upset bid on the last play of the game because we had 13 guys on the field. This year, coming off a warmup over Buffalo, I see a close game that will probably be decided by special teams and that worries me because, believe it or not, yours have been better than ours.

But I think our O-line will handle your pass rush. You will stop our running game because so far we haven’t had one. Frankly, when your quarterback passes for more than 300 yards every game, your running game isn’t hugely important.

Our defense is a lot better than you guys think it is and it is good enough to shut you down when it has to. Florida got several short fields and had very little to show for it. I honestly believe we would have beaten them had Hunter not gotten hurt. To quote Mr. Munson, that was like a hobnail boot to our faces.

OK, here goes: Tennessee 35, UGA 34. Good luck, have fun in Knoxville and let’s hope nobody important to our teams gets hurt. It is still early and there is a lot of football to be played.

Saturday may see Isaiah Crowell finally break a long touchdown run. (Associated Press)

Saturday may see Isaiah Crowell finally break a long touchdown run. (Associated Press)

Thanks, Joey, for bringing up the hobnail boot play. That’s a nice reminder of the early days of the Mark Richt regime, when the Dawgs owned Neyland Stadium. P44 Haynes. Sean Jones. Ah yes, those were the days.

The last couple of trips to Knoxville have been pretty horrific for Georgia, however, so now would be a great time to flip that dynamic again.

I’ll admit this game is looking tougher for Georgia now than it did back at the beginning of the season, largely thanks to young UT quarterback Tyler Bray, who’s leading the conference in passing yards per game, touchdown passes and passing efficiency.

Of course, most of that has been against suspect competition, but the same knock can be used against Georgia, so I won’t go there.

The loss of ace receiver Justin Hunter isn’t to be underestimated, however, as I think Georgia is likely to devote a bit more attention to the Vols’ remaining receiving threat, Da’Rick Rogers, than Buffalo did last week, when Rogers had seven catches for 180 yards.

That’s pretty much the Tennessee offense right there, as the running game with Tauren Poole has been pretty dreadful, ranking last in the SEC.

Still, with Tennessee tied for the national lead in third-down conversions and the Dogs ranked second nationally in defending third down, something’s got to give.

Defensively, the Volunteers have been good but not great and have proved vulnerable to big plays. So far UT has given up a touchdown of at least 65 yards or longer in all four games.

Speaking of which, this might be the week Isaiah Crowell finally breaks a long one. And if Georgia’s offensive line can a) stay onsides despite the deafening Neyland Stadium noise and b) keep Aaron Murray from getting batted around and adding to the 13 times he’s already been sacked, Orson Charles and Malcolm Mitchell could have big days, too.

I think the keys to this game for Georgia come down to two things (besides, of course, not turning the ball over): Can Todd Grantham’s defense continue to get QB pressure in the absence of the suspended Cornelius Washington? And can Mike Bobo’s offense manage to put two consecutive halves of decent production together?

Basically, my optimism about this game comes down to this: Bray is good, but he’s not Kellen Moore, and Georgia’s defense with Bacarri Rambo (who didn’t play against Moore) is a lot better than it was in the first game. Plus, you’ve got to figure Georgia’s offense is overdue for a big second half.

If Jarvis Jones and Chase Vasser (or Ray Drew or whoever) can keep up the pressure on Bray and Murray can keep from serving up a pick 6 or two, I think Georgia notches another SEC win against Tennessee. But I think this will be the Dogs’ biggest challenge since the opening two games.

What about you? Feel free to share your thoughts on how the Dogs will do against the Vols.

If the Dawgs can stay humble and remember that TN is the toughest opponent in recent history (and that wins over the Miss. teams aren’t all that great), maybe we can get a win. Too much confidence and the Vols will sneak up and pound us.

Tyler Bray’s numbers are all non-con home game numbers and two weeks to prepare for fla. Don’t complain about injuries to Wide outs as UGA has been w/out key defensive and offensive players every week and that will continue this week. The speed of a top SEC defense cathes up with TENN this week and a mistake free UGA gets a big win.

Bill,

IC had a monster touchdown run last week but CMR wouldn’t ask for help from upstairs…no pun intended. IC was clearly in-bounds and sometimes I scratch my formerly full head of hair and wonder why CMR wouldn’t give IC the benefit of the doubt. Even if he was wrong it would have energized the young freshman that the coach had his back. CMR has gotten so bad at motivating his team. This is one place he has really fallen. Having that TD run called back was deflating. Bad move CMR.

I dont think our D is better than UF’s and they held TN to 23 points without Hunter. I think the Vols win a close one but we learn from the loss to beat UF (while the Vols lose to LSU and Bama).

Tennessee was a ONE dimensional team BEFORE Justin Hunter’s injury. What is your friend smoking exactly? Tennessee has NO running game and exactly one competent receiver, and I guarantee you, Rambo will be draped over Rogers like Paris Hilton to the Australian soccer team at a Hollywood night club.

UGA Insider,

Remember, the call on the field was that IC was out of bounds. The replays I saw didn’t look conclusive. They have to have conclusive evidence to overturn the call. Also, on a play that close, the player is not going to know whether they were in our out; they are not looking at their own feet. IC has no reason to feel slighted by Coach Richt.

Considering the Dawgs have the biggest O-line in all of football ( including the NFL ) they need to just run and pound the ball, eat up clock and keep Murray from throwing the ball ( and the game ) away.

Did I ever say IC felt “slighted”? You miss the point. I meant that it didn’t matter if it was overturned or not but to give his young freshman the benefit of the doubt. That move would have given IC even more confidence but instead we just casually go back to the huddle and call another play. IC made a hell-of-a run and CMR just brushed it aside.

Agree with RiffRaff, we definitely need to keep Tyler Bray off the field as much as possible. It’s also going to take a mistake-free game: NO turnovers, defense needing to turn those almosts into interceptions with a pick 6 or two thrown in.

Let’s tee it up and play the game The way the last 4 have gone there is no way to predict the outcome. Might as well flip a coin, but I am pulling for the DAWGS.

Comment on yesterdays “Murray Sophomore Slump” ….

I like Murray and he obviously has grreat skills. However, I think he is missing something as a tough leader. He is young and the entire team is … but he does not seem to have the ability to motivate the troups.

I think UGA missed a great opportunitiy in the 3rd Q with 3 TD lead, the D playing lights out, and Murray having control problems…. to put Mason in the game to run with the 1st team. He should have been in at that point and I have a feeling that the team might step it up a notch with his presence. It could have also created some competition at the position and given Mason and the team confidence for the day in which Murray gets knocked out of the game.

I just have the feeling that we could take a step forward with Mason for some reason.

Also seems odd to me (is it play calling or Murray) ….

last year we were conservative and fell behind in the first half of games only to come on several times and open it up and make a closer game of it. This year we seem open in the first half but holding back in the second.

I feel your pal Joey is in for a jolt of reality. It didn’t appear Hunter was going to make much splash in the Florida game and even if he had, the Vol D had nothing for Rainey and Demps. The Vol D just kept coming back with nothing. The TN O couldn’t make pooh stink and if the entire offense was dependent on one receiver, is it really much of an offense? Ask your buddy Ledbetter to let Da’Rick know, Georgia isn’t Buffalo.

This team could run the table and people would still be hollering for Richt and Bobo to be fired. Outside the Boise Game the D has been great, yes Murry has struggled but the coaching can’t be too bad when you have a True Freshmen at RB that has won SEC Freshmen of the week consecutively. A True Freshmen that has stepped up and made an impact at Wide Receiver and given us another threat. Georgia has a chance to win the East….Its time to stop finding every reason to beat this team up and get behind them and actually root for their success.

The call could not be reviewed upstairs in the same way that the call @ the Bama/FL game later that night could not be reviewed (the brantley got the balled knocked out and clearly did not recover)…there was a whistle that stopped the play. ON the run by IC, there was whistle because the ref thought he’d stepped out. IF the ref had NOT blown the whistle and allowed the play to continue, then and only then could Miss st and or the ref’s decided to review to make sure he hadn’t stepped out. Because CMR and everyone else on the field and in the booth knows how the rules work, this was not a reviewable play. Why do you think Saban wasn’t mad the other night on the same type of play? Just a fan…UGA beat Miss St., who had to go to OT to beat La Tech. UT beat Cinci badly and they crushed NC State so not sure who has the more impressive win, UGA or UT. Unfortunately for UGA, I think the similarities between Richt and Fulmer are scary. Both won early, recruited great, but during last few years of their tenure, always lost to SEC big boys. Both were also knows as “players’ coaches” which translates into losing the team off the field. Another similarity is they both have coached with a “not to lose” philosophy too often. This means they let inferior opponents stay in games and let equal or better opponents intimidate them. Don’t shoot me for offering an opinion as an independent observer but tell me which of the above points is false.

We would be in the same position if we played the teams tennessee have played. We have had been in the tough games.

Your three wins came against the two worst teams in the SEC and an FCS team. The only real difference in your schedules was the Boise St game and we know how that went.

@JD: What does history tell you about Notre Dame? History would tell you to bet on them winning a NC, but recent history would tell you to bet on them finishing with a .500 record. Recent history for UT would tell you that they were/are in a mess with the NCAA and got demolished last year by UGA. It also says that Bray looks like a world-beater against suspenct competition, but rather pedestrian against legit SEC defenses.
Also, who normally wins: Defense or Offense? Defense wins championships!!!

I don’t think that point is now. This is a 2 TD win for the Dawgs and not because we are would beaters but, solely for the reason that we are well ahead of the Tennessee program at this point in time. Georgia has better special teams (return, punter, place kicker 2 if walsh has unfuqd his mental implosion), Georgia has a better o-line in runblocking (meaning we need to set up pass plays by moving the pocket, bootlegs for Murray, and copious amounts of play-action), and Georgia has a first-class running back. At ALL level of defense (line, linebacker, secondary) we are more athletic, productive, and experienced and we have the better DC. Add in the fact that Georgia has shown in it’s SEC games this season that we are also a much more physical football team, and this looks good for Athens.

Tennessee has better receivers (rogers, arnett), a better pass-blocking o-line, a better quarterback, homefield advantage in a hostile stadium and a more aggressive HC.

These signs point to some sloppy/overreaching mistakes on offense for Tenn, who will fail to run the ball and heap the responsibility on a QB who hasn’t proven himself in big games (just like Murray). Unlike Murray, Bray does not have a high potentency defense and a true blue-chip running back to bail him out. Georgia will also establish better field position.

Close first half, and the first complete game UGA has played since CC equals: UGA 31 Tennessee 20

Since Coach Richt knows what the hell he’s doing, I’ll leave it to him to work on the strategy and tactics to use in Knoxville. I do suggest, however, that he puts a reminder in his notes about preparing the team for this week’s game: college football games occur during four, 15-minute quarters, and scores from all four quarters count toward the final result. Teams who take a rest during one or more quarters tend to score fewer points than their opponents. Let’s all hope that the Dogs arrive ready to play hard for all four quarters this week.

No argument here guy. We should have beaten SC with relative ease. We couldn’t get out of our own way. The jury is out on SC and FL. Up until Florida played Bama they looked good on TV and were undefeated. The FL/TN game was especially impressive then FL lays an egg against Bama. Bama is good, but not generally as good as they looked against FL, It’s a tough read. I never thought SC was good. Basically the same team AU destroyed in the SECCG. Sportwriters and coaching assistants really don’t have a clue IMHO on who deserves rankings and who doesn’t. Both have too much tunnel vision and both most years are wrong until it becomes obvious

Actually it took 7 years to get the best team in the land again. If you don’t think 2004 team was the best then maybe you should look at the NFL rosters with with players still playing and starting who were on it.

FSU when they won in 1993 played Notre Dame OOC, an undefeated Tommy Frasier Nebraska and Miami. Miami played notre dams and oklahomas when they won. How where they weak?

Now 1990 Tech will give UGA 1980 a run as weakest champions.

Don’t forget to check back tomorrow for the special tribute to Saint Jan Kemp, the noble self-sacrificing lady who singlehandedly tried to clean up the evil mess that Vince Dooley created in Athens. That evil persists even thirty years later, but Saint Jan gave her all to exposing Dooley as the fraud that he was. It’s lamentable that there isn’t a modern-day Saint Jan to take on Mark Richt and bring him down too.

It kills dawgtards that GT won the national championship much more recently than they have.

One of the posts above reminds me that UGA won the championship before Jan Kemp exposed the shameful remedial studies system that Dooley created to allow total dummies to play for four years without ever coming close to graduating with a degree. The sickening thing is that Richt is doing essentially the same thing, with UGA admitting most of his low class recruits as “conditional,” since they couldn’t get into a legitimate school with their grades.

Dawgs win this one close. Bray is a good QB, but not enough people to throw too. UT won’t be able to run the ball, and won’t be able to stop the dawgs from running the ball. What makes this one close is the crowd noise and Bray. The only way the Dawgs lose this game is if they turn it over and beat themselves (see SC game). Better get the ball first and quite the crowd, then GATA! GO DAWGS!!!

In fairness I have to say I can’t even guess who will win this game. I guess that says alot in itself. The Dawgs are loaded with talent but we have Richt, Bobo and Grantham on the sidelines. They have a Dooley. Their team is young and improving our team is a mix of young and experienced and we had one decent game.

The Dawgs should win this one but with our coaching staff I don’t think they can. Note how well the running game is established then Bobo decides to change up with passing. He is he!! bent on a balanced attack even if it means losing I guess.

I thought MSU would lay us out last week and I’m glad I was wrong. This game is such a close and difficult call that I have to go with recent history. That means the coaches lose this one for us again against UT.

It means that you don’t care if 45 of these thugs have been arrested in the past four years. It means that you have no problem with these drunken bozos driving around at 92 mph. Mark Richt took a UGA team that was losing to UT, UF, and doing well to go 8-4 every year. He brought it back to SEC titles and to a national power. Now we find this great program in a battle to over come a down hill slide over the past 3 years. CMR has brought the team under his leadership to post winning records or ties to every program in the SEC withholding UF. I guess even superman has kryptonite. I see the team playing better this year than last and improving week by week. I wanted to post this to remind fans of the 90’s and UGA’s records those years.
This week the Dawgs get a real test of will in UT. Their program is building and getting stronger, but not where they need to be to defeat a UGA program that is loaded with tallent and experience. I see the games being close, unless the Dawgs can jump out to an early lead, and take the crowd out. If the score is UGA by two touchdowns after the first quarter, look for a blow out. (UGA 34 UT 10) If the Vols can hold close, through the first half UGA 28 UT 21.
Last tech fans…your ranked and playing well. I hope you have much success this season in the ACC. I’m pulling for the bugs against Clemson and every other game. It will help UGA with a better bowl when the Dawgs beat the jackets down….AGAIN. Say what you may about cheating, grades,, etc. This conversation is about football. This is the sports section of the AJC. This is a conversation about the Dawgs. I know alot of ya’ll so called “fans” of other schools are very interested in the goings on of the SEC and the Dawgs. Rightfully so as a tech fan trying to understand how you can look so good against the ACC teams and then get beat down so badly against the Dawgs can be a mystery for you. What I can’t understand is why aren’t you used to it by now??!! You may be ranked, you may be undefeated…but your not in the SEC, and you don’t have to know much history to look at the score board last season… Glorry glorry to ole Georgia..and to he!! with ga tech!

The biggest in college ball and NFL FOOTBALL.

Though we have little depth there. So if the coaches are doing their job we should easily jump out to early leads.

Bobo has made his playcalling a puzzle for me. I think the man is trying to give a 50 / 50 run / pass balance. This looks good on paper but in my opinion one must go the way of the player strength / talent and what works. If the run game is established then stick with it and win.

FRANLKLY I LIKE THE BRAVADO OF THE GEORGIA FANS. YOU WOULD THINK THAT THEY ARE RATED #1 IN THE NATION. AT LAST COUNT NEITHER TEAM IS RANKED IN THE TOP 25 SO NEITHER ONE OF USE REALLY SHOUDL BE TALKING TOO MUCH SMACK. NOW THAT BEING SAID TENNESSEE HAS A HISTORY OF PLAYING WELL IN UNDERDOG GAMES. LAST YEAR @BATON ROUGE THE VOLS WERE HEAVY UNDERDOGS THAT PLAYED LSU DOWN TO THE LAST SECOND AND BEAT THEM IN REGULAR ONLY TO HAVE THE OFFICIALS GIVE THE GAME TO THEM IN THE END.AS WE ALL SHOULD KNOW LSU WAS AND STILL IS A MUCH BETTER TEAM THAN GEORGIA AND WE WERE PLAYING THEM IN THEIR HOUSE WHERE THEY SELDOM LOSE. NOW TO THE TENNESSEE/GA GAME. YES ON PAPER ITS NO SECRET THAT GA APPEARS TO BE MORE TALENTED, BUT FROM ALL OF MY YEARS OF WATCHING FOOTBALL IT ISNT THE MOST TALENTED TEAM THAT WINS, ITS THE TEAM THAT WANTS IT THE MOST. IN THIS CATAGORY I THINK TENNESSEE WINS BECAUSE AFTER ALL THE ADVERSITY OF LAST YEAR AND THE LAST TWO YEARS TENNESSEE WANTS TO BE RESPECTED AGAIN AND FROM THE COMMENTS ON HER FROM GEORGIA FANS I SEE THAT YOU DONT HAVE ANY RESPECT FOR TENNESSEE AND THINK THIS GAME IS A SURE WIN. I CAN TELL YOU THAT GEORGIA IS MESSING WITH A HORNETS NEST AND WONT KNOW IT UNTIL THEY ARE STUNG MULTIPLE TIMES TOMORROW NIGHT. TENNESSEE IS DUE A BIG WIN AND SOONER OR LATER KARMA HAS TO SWING OUR WAY. I SINCERLY THINK THAT WE FINALLY GET ONE FOR THE GIPPER TOMORROW NIGHT, NOT BECAUSE WE ARE A CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM OR THAT WE ARE BETTER THAN GEORGIA, BUT BECAUSE WE WANT IT MORE. HELL WE MAY NOT WIN ANOTHER SEC GAME THE REST OF THE YEAR, BUT TENNESSEE AND DOLLEY REALLY WANT THIS ONE AND THE GODS SMILE ON ROCKYTOP (FINALLY)!!!!!!!!!TENN 35/DAWGS 21

Ok UGA fans…I like the fact that you have confidence in your team, but why all of a sudden are you guys thinking that you have gotten SOOOO much better? Your improvement has come against 3 bad football teams….now all of sudden you are going to win the SEC. You are going to get yourself into the same situation that you did before the season started…thinking you were better than you really were.

Here is the bottom line…Both UT and UGA have lost against good teams, and won against bad teams. When either program wins against a ranked team, then one or the other can start pounding their chest. The time for that though, is not now.

I love all of these fans of other teams on here nay saying us. I said all along this year that this team is young and we need to have patience. I felt like this game was one to mark down on the calander as whether we’re gonna be really in this East race or not. This team has improved tremendously especially on D, and if we can put together two halves on offense and stop letting our youth lose the turnover battle, we are gonna be EXTREMELY EXPLOSIVE. We will miss Washington’s experience in this one, but our front three are as impressive as any in the nation and are only getting better. If we don’t lose composure we will win this game. Big task, big game, potential big win. The East is WIDE OPEN. Don’t let the point totals of the first two games fool you. Boise wore down a tired D in the second half dinking and dunking us to death with the hurry up, South Carolina got 28 points off of turnovers and a special teams trick play if you throw in the fumble return that left them on the UGA 5 yard line. This D has been pretty darn solid and well coached all year. This is gonna be a dog fight for Tennessee (no pun intended).

Another thing about the points per game, if you just look at the scores it is very deceiving. ESPN has us ranked 30th in points per game allowed at a little over 20 a game. This stat is dead wrong. Our D has only allowed 13.8 pts a game. they were responsible for all against Boise St., but only 24 against Usc. Over the last 3 games they have only allowed 10. Not to mention they rank 4th nationally in INT. with 8 through 5 games with Baccari Rambo ranking in a tie for first nationally with 4 in just 4 games. We also rank second nationally in 3rd down efficiency. Our strengths defensively are Tennessee’s strengths offensively. We held Alshon Jeffrey to just 5 cathces for 85 yards, you could argue that it was due to Garcia, but the defense did force alot of those bad throws. I think Bray gets his numbers, but it won’t be from carving us up, it’ll be from throwing it 40 plus times from a lack of running game. If that happens UGA could win BIG if they protect the ball.

These practices of recruiting morons and coddling them for four years, them tossing them out like garbage, are still going on, but at least the world knows what’s happening in Athens now.

Interesting that Vegas has the Dawgs only a 1-point favorite. Is it our poor showings on the last two visits? Lack of confidence in our offense? Seeing our D vs their O as a standoff? I like the Dawgs here and will settle for the 1 point win: UGA 31- UT 30.

everyone is hung up on the UGA off vs the TENN def. While i believe Tennessee’s offensive numbers are skewed anyway (Montana manhandled their oline as did Florida, and UGA has a better defense than either) no is focusing on the mismatch. UGA off vs UT def. T.Brown brings up our conversion rate on 3rd down, yet neglects to look at how often that has really mattered. The majority of our conversions have come on 10+ yd rushing or passing plays on 1st and 2nd down. Tennessee’s def line was continually blasted by Cincinnati and Florida in the run game, an area where our offensive line has been dominant, due to their size and Crowell’s ability to get small, make a two to three lineman cutback once the LBs lose sight of him, and accelerate back up the crease.

I think the dawgs still have a lot of work to do. Offense can’t score in the second half. MR may be to conservative. Murray is being hit or sacked to many times. OL missing blocks. OL is the biggest, but not quickest. Mississippi shot thierselves in the foot last game. Ga often looked good because Miss State qb made bad throws. We will see against Bray. Washington is suspended. SOMEONE ON THE DL HAS TO STEP UP. I’M AFRAID GARNER IS THE WEAK LINK. Why don’t he move on? Our DL just don’t come off the ball like other well coached teams do.

Also, Tennessee is playing two TRUE freshmen at OLB, where the main coverage responsibility falls for Orson Charles…there is no slight advantage in that situation…OC will have 100+ recieving yds and at least one TD in this game. Who have UT’s corners had to cover on M. Mitchell’s level this yr? Da’rick Rogers in practice, and that’s about it. Look back at his scrimmage numbers, and you’ll see Mitchell’s game average for this week. Double Charles, and it’s 15+ yds to Mitchell. Double Mitchell, and it’s 10+ to Charles. Bracket both, and it’s a dump to Figgins or Crowell. This IS an area that Murray has improved on play-action, bootlegs, and screens. MOVE him out of the pocket or invite the pressure…that is the only way he will avoid looking like the Crash Test Dummy from Sanford Stadium.

“I guess there really hasn’t been a marquee win,” Murray admitted earlier this week.

This one, if they win it, won’t be a marquee win either. It should be. Georgia, Tennessee and Florida should be the heavyweight anchors of the SEC East – but they’re not. Not lately.

These things happen. Programs have their ups and downs and it reflects upward onto divisions and conferences when several programs are down at once. It happened to the SEC West several years ago.

Coach Dan Mullen took advantage of the East Division slump last year to make a ‘lil ‘ole Missy State team look like potential world-beaters. Auburn rode the slump to a National Championship. Either Alabama or LSU will likely do the same thing this year.

Mark Richt had his shot when the West was down. If he hangs around long enough, odds are, he’ll get another shot. Only problem is, by then, Florida and Tennessee might have both improved significantly.

My only true concern with this team is its character…something neither football squad has. These teams are all gas and no patience…a common inconsistency with younger teams. They either dominate a weak opponent, or collapse when they’re losing to a stronger opponent. Can anyone name the last comeback win for either QB? It doesn’t exist. Every win that UGA has had, and every win that Tennessee has had with Murray and Bray at QB has been a lead from the start situation. Whoever has the lead at half will win this game. I wish these kids had an ounce of the character that Jake Scott, David Pollack, Bill Stanfill, David Greene, Marcus Howard, Quentin Moses, Charles Grant, and Knowshon Moreno had…those were gamebreakers.

Excellent point, Sage advice…the problem in Mark Richts best years is still our biggest problem to date…Florida. Without a turn in that rivalry, we will continue to be a 2nd tier program…and even that velvet dagger distinguishment has been slipping lately. Even with GREAT squads, there has always been a sloppy loss to either SC, TENN, FL or Kentucky. Unacceptable…this program needs discipline. And I don’t mean the “You’re off the team for drinking, violating curfew type” although that’s always an issue as well. I’m talking about the military discipline that gets 85 scholarship players to move, breath, sleep, eat, talk, and think as one unit. When you look at Saban’s squads, and even Petersen’s squads, that is the biggest difference. Picture perfect execution, dedication to assignments, flawless technique built from solid fundamentals, and the decision making ability to know the right time to sell out for a big play.

However, I am not delusional enough to think that things are great until I see the type of discipline out of this team that I posted above.
The only exception I see to that rule is Auburn. Gus Malzahn has shown a tremendous amount of character (and offensive flexibility), and Chizik instills the discipline which is tantamount to comebacks and upsets. That is why the achieve more with less. I wish we had Auburn’s OC as HC at this point. He would team well with Grantham, and he doesn’t waste talent “waiting for it to develop”. Richt is every bit as conservative as his constituents, only willing to do “thiiiiiiiis” much outside of his comfort zone to protect a hollow image. He needs to be hungry again like he was when he took this job. Me and Erk coulda really lit a fire in him. lol.

When Alabama has been down, they have struggled. They didn’t always make the right choices and they had some wild ups and downs, but they continued to struggle to regain a standard of excellence in their football program.

When Georgia is down, they seem to have a peace about it.
