What worries you most as the Dogs head to Knoxville?

The poor play of Georgia's offensive line in pass protection is affecting Aaron Murray (Associated Press)

As the Bulldogs prepare to journey up to Rocky Top, what worries you most as a Georgia fan?

Is it the loss of ace pass rusher Cornelius Washington, who might have been expected to apply considerable pressure on Volunteer QB Tyler Bray? Are you remembering how Kellen Moore picked apart the Georgia defense when he wasn’t under any pressure?

Are you fretting about the continuing special teams problems and wondering just what Mark Richt’s going to do if a game comes down to the choice between going for it on fourth down or calling in Blair Walsh and the field goal unit?

Does the fall-off in offensive production in the second half over the past couple of games worry you the most?

Or is it the shaky play of sophomore quarterback Aaron Murray, who threw three more picks Saturday?

Actually, I think most of Murray’s problems, and perhaps even some of the second-half offensive slump, are a result of what worries me most about the Dawgs right now: the poor pass protection by a spotty offensive line that’s overworked because of a severe lack of depth.

It looked to me Saturday like maybe one of the reasons Mike Bobo got conservative in the second half and didn’t make as much use of the spread (where Isaiah Crowell appears to be more effective since he thrives on space) was because he was trying to protect his quarterback with more blockers in the backfield.

In addition to getting sacked a couple of times by the Maroon Bulldogs, Murray was hit hard several times in the first half and he never seemed comfortable in the pocket after that. In fact, a couple of times he seemed so uncomfortable that he hurried passes when he didn’t even have to. Bobo also had Murray rolling out more, which doesn’t appear to help the young quarterback’s accuracy.

And remember the last time this OL played before a really noisy crowd, in the Georgia Dome, and all those false starts? Neyland Stadium will definitely be just as loud, if not more so.

So that’s what concerns me the most as the Dogs head to Knoxville: the deficient OL and the effect it’s having on our quarterback and playcalling.

How about you?

defense has to set the tone. crowell needs to stay in the game. one week he wants 30 carries, the next he doesn’t. it should be up to the coaches because the tone has to be set with the run. do dawgs. IC is our best chance. defense must continue high level of play.

A big special teams flub. Dawgs won in 2003 in Knoxville on huge defensive/special teams play. The last six contests have been decisive victories (3 for each side) predicated on BIG plays.

Don’t let Tenn get huge pass plays, Dawgs win. Crowell rips a run like the one that was called back against MSU, Dawgs win.

Run the ball down their throats, keep Bray on the sideline

No turnovers

Play field position and punt. Make them drive it 80 yards to score.

I think a lot of Murray mistakes are beacuse he does not see well downfield because of his height. Murray is good but not great. Bray is the best QB in the SEC for sure. He is deadly accurate.

Bulldogs would literally steal one if they won a night game in Knoxville.

I am concerned about the lack of 2nd half production. The defense has masked this problem pretty well but how much longer can we expect them to cover this major problem? The fire and intensity seems to be diminished by 2nd half and the offense just seems to be going through the motions. I don’t know what is being said at halftime but perhaps silence would work better.

Murray is 6′1″

His arms are not real long and it gives the look of him being short.

He is above average height wise.

How many passes has he had batted down at the line?

None I can remember.

The height thing is an overused phrase used by people who don’t have a clue as to what they are talking about, which is about 99% of the losers on these blogs.

The same people who want us to lose and not win out so we don’t have to play big bad Bama in the dome.

All SEC games are must win, If Dogs hope to make a run at SEC East they must beat the Vols at home and that is not easy even with the Vols having a less than steller season, The loss of Cornelius Washington will hurt the Dog’s pass rush lets hope Ray Drew steps in and does the job, Murray needs to put two halfs together and close out the Vols early, The Dawgs have too many weapons for this to be a close game.

What worries me the most is Bobo trying to sit on a lead in the second half and letting the defense keep the win for the team. That, and his tendancy to try and go for the bomb, thus getting his QB crushed. Did he not learn anything from the Boise game. Keep it short and control the game clock that way. Don’t depend on the defense to do everything for you. In other words, go for the kill. Conservative may be nice in politics but has no place in an SEC football game. We have a monster sized line on OL, but they are more of a run blocking line, not a hold them all day long while we wait for a WR to get open downfield 45 yards. We have some speedy WR’s, so let’s get them the ball, 7-10 yards down the field and let them get those yards after the catch. Bombs may make nice hilight film but the chances for failure are a lot higher than a short, play control game. Run at them until they get tired of it also. We have the runners to wear down a defense, but when we find something that is working, we go away from it. If the defense can’t stop it, we shouldn’t either. If they figure it out, change up to another thing, but keep it simple, and control the darn game clock.

Smokewagon hit the nail on the head. I have never in all my years seen a team so good in the first half and so bad in the second. This has been going on folks for the past 3 years. Like I have said so many times….It looks like Bobo hands out Valiums at halftime or something.

Special teams is going to hurt us again if CMR is not careful. And as usual he is hard-headed and slow to correct the problem. Why we don’t have a dedicated special teams coach is beyond me.

I’m nervous about this game because the last 2 trips to Knoxville have been embarrassments and not even competitive. CMR did not have them ready to play and Dooley is looking for that signature win.

As of today I’m going to say UGA-28 UT 27.

My main worry is the fact that we are playing in Knoxville. I think most fans would agree that the 2007 UGA football team was one of the, if not the best team to come from UGA in the past decade. Either 2007 or 2002. But in 2007, Tennessee beat us like a drum in Knoxville. The game was never even close, and the same goes for the last time that we were up there. Neyland used to almost be like a 2nd home to Coach Richt, but it’s not so kind anymore. It’s going to be a night game and it’s going to be loud!

I was at that game in 07′ and let’s add the fact that Fulmer was a lame-duck coach who was short on talent and depth. My friends and I left at halftime that day because we were tired of being cussed out by hillbillies. That was the first day that I doubted this staff to get the players ready for a big game. Dawg_Mike

What worries me most?

We dont give the ball to Figgins on short yardage situations. In fact, we dont hand him the ball at all- look it up. 0 rushes 0 yards.

We run a no huddle hurry up offense and we are not conditioned enough to handle it. Auburn ran 90 offensive plays at SC- 90 ! But they did not seem to be tired, or at least their body language did not indicate it like our guys do. SLOW DOWN and call better plays in the huddle.

We fall victim to halftime adjustments time and time again while we make none. that concerns me more than anything. if they take away a deep ball, then pick them apart with short dinks and dunks like Boise did to us- let the playmakers have the ball.

We do not have a killer instinct.

Those are my primary concerns.

A couple of things worry me:
1. UT had a week of and a very weak opponent last week, so they’ll be rested and are healthy.
2. Offensive malaise in the second half. I understand wanting to burn clock etc, but losing all momentum is a confidence killer – especially against a quick-strike passing team. In other words, keep the peddle to the metal.
3. Blair Walsh needs to get back to his old form. At some point, the Dawgs will need him to make a last-second kick!
4. The last two games in Knoxville have been some the two worst road losses in the CMR era. Really need to get over that hurdle. If UGA can beat UT and Vandy, they’ll be 5-2 going into the bye week and the Florida game with a lot of momentum.

What would worry me if I was a UGA fan is the Tennessee passing attack. They are ranked 11th in yds per game and 8th in passing rating. The last 4 teams that UGA played were ranked 101st, FCS, 108th, and 89th. The only team UGA has played with a solid passing attack is Boise St and they didn’t exactly shut them down. Although Bray is not at the same level as Kellen Moore.

I fear more Boboball — if we get a 10-14 point lead, the offense crawls into a turtle shell (or into Uga’s doghouse currently being rented to Russ). Then, Bray puts some points on the board, and we’re scrambling to come back. I was encouraged by Coach Richt’s acknowledgements on the radio last night about certain sets of plays that we have not seen yet, but will in the days to come, as certain players gain experience at their positions. But, we’re almost halfway into the season, so it’s time to expand that playbook and to stop being timid in the 2nd half. GO DAWGS!!

So UGA Insider…I agree with most everything you say and like your insights. But, outside of a game plan, the players have to get themselves correct mentally and the coaches need to game plan well. What worries me most is that Brantley’s injury appears to be a high ankle sprain and it is likely he will be back against Georia. He may miss LSU and Auburn, but he will likely play against Georgia and that is a HUGE difference. Florida coming off a 3 game losing streak or even 2 out of 3 doesn’t bode well for the Dawgs.

In Knoxville, think you nailed the list of concerns. If the D plays like they did last week, we have a shot in any game, but we will miss Washington. I think 2 week suspension is too little for a DUI. If he was .001 over the .08 limit (which I think is too low), then 2 weeks would have been fine, but he should have been suspended for at least 4 games for this.

They beat 3 of the most pitiful teams in college football: Coastal Carolina (WOW – what a victory that was), Ole Misery (yea – even VANDY beat them 30-7 – and a running back for Vandy ran for 180 yards – so much for that GREAT performance by IC), and Missy Tech (even Lossie Tech took them to OT – and should have won that game). So – what do those “wins” prove for GA – NOTHING. Georgia can bark all they want to when they beat a REAL team (and TN is NOT one of those either). As a Vol fan, what did concern me was Washington’s pass rush. Not so worried now. I believe this game will be won on the line of scrimmage, whoever wins that will win the game. I think it will be a great matchup of two good teams looking for a signature win. I am glad that you still have Bobo as your playcaller, that gives me hope. Good luck Dawgs, see you in Ktown!!

Murray will be fine as long as he’s given adequate protection from our OL. Think we all know what Crowell brings to the table so we just have to give Tn. a steady diet of trying to run him down. Also, we have to put their QB on hiss @$$ a few times and make him hear footsteps over that loud crowd of hillbillys.

There was a day not so long ago, several years at this point that Georgia was a quick strike offense and the conservative play calling was left to the defensive side of the ball. It seems we always had both the ability and the talent to BAM!! score when needed and most of all, we coaches with the intestinal fortitude to play the game to win as opposed to not lose. We don’t seem to have that coaching any longer.

If we are going to beat TN we’ll likely have to score and play with some reckless abandon well into the second half. The defense is jelling and I am confident they will do they’re part. Will we have adquate offensive production in the first half and milktoast in the second? History says we will. If we do, we lose. That worries me

Last time in Knoxville, the play-action roll-out by Tennessee killed the Dawgs. They cannot get fooled like that again and expect to have a chance. Defense must stay with their assignments. Offensively, Dawgs need to get the ball out in space to our playmakers (Crowell, Charles, Wooten). If UGA gets the running game established, it’s over!

My worst fear is that the score is close near the end of the fourth quarter, and U.Ga. has the ball inside the Vols’ 20 with a few seconds left. (Stay with me here…) Coach Richt sends Blair Walsh in to hit a chip shot, the ball is snapped, then Barbara Dooley leaps up in the crowd behind the goalpost, rips open her blouse to flash Blair, who spits the bit, sailing the chip shot wide right, and he never recovers from this horrible experience. At the postgame press conference, he tells reporters that missing another field goal is “no big deal” (he got that line from Aaron Murray, remember?), but he can’t get the sight of topless Barbara out of his head, so he’s never able to kick again. Oh, and U.Ga. loses by two points. That possibility worries me.

It looked to me like Crowell hurt his ribs again in the beginning of the second half against Miss St. He winced and kind of grabbed at them and then looked like he realized he would be pulled from the game if he let on. He was then out for a while and Samuel and Thomas got the majority of the carries. He came back in but was ineffective and didn’t seem to be running as hard. I think they need to get him more toss sweeps as his speed and his cuts are where he is most dangerous. I’d like to see Samuel go back to Linebacker and give more runs to Boykin and B. Smith as a changeup and give the defense something to think about. My biggest fear is Tennesee dropping the little 5-7 yard passes we seem to have a hard time covering and then breaking one!

@Real Dawg Fan, I concur. We as fans shouldn’t be so quick to throw CMR under the bus. I belive he will get this team back to a title game. He has represented our institution with the upmost class. Things are never the way they seem. We certainly have much room for improvement, but who doesn’t. The SEC is at the top of the food chain. So for a coach to have accomplished what he has @ UGA speaks volumnes. We have all had let-downs as fans, and it is only because we care about our teams. I can only imagine how one must feel in their shoes. Whether it be a loss or handling a kids life by handing out a punishment. If it were my child I would certainly sleep better knowing CMR was making those calls as opposed to some of the other coachs around the league. My concern for the game-crowd noise-and how our kids handle it- not a good place to play and a horrible place to sit if you fall to far behind.

Biggest concern is dawgs lack of scoring points in the 2d half, only 6 points last two games, pitiful. Cannot do that against TN, nor leave points on the field due to missed FG’s, pitiful.

Without Washington I think we lose the edge in pass rushing and sacks. Right now, backups cannot do it straight up unless the DC comes up w/some blitz packages to free them up.

Bobo cannot take his foot off the pedal in this game like he has in both 2d halves of the MS games. He doesn’t have the luxury of relying on Walsh for points this season. GA has got to be better in the red zone offense and 3rd down conversions.

Until the dawgs display 4 qtrs of sustained drives and score more points in the 2d half then we’ll feel maybe they have finally have arrived.

And BMPDP, I keep hearing the stat that Murray has yet to beat a team with a winning record and I for the life of me, after reviewing so many of the games, can’t find one where he was the only guy on the field. Did he lose last year’s SC game? Nope, how about last year’s Miss St game? Nope. Did he contribute to the loss to SC this year. Yes, sure did. But so did a few others. It’s called a team game in case it’s one you haven’t played yet.

And you know, it’s really hard to blame the BSU game on him so good luck. People keep pointing to last year’s UF game. First off, the interception in OT was off a tipped pass. But let’s be honest shall we. The defense got lit up most of that game and if not for Aaron Murray, THERE WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN AN OVERTIME.

Bacarri Rambo to the Rescue

October 4th, 2011
1:41 pm

We will miss Washington on defense for sure but Chase Vasser is a more accomplished in pass coverage and you know Tennessee will throw the ball at least 60% of the time. Vasser is an adequate pass rusher but he’s great in pass coverage and we may need more pass coverage in this game. I think Grantham will dial up a lot of zone blitzes to confuse Bray. Barring a complete meltdown, I feel our front 3 can and will stop the Tennessee run game.

Offensively, we are going to have to keep the train rolling in the second half. Like another poster I think the game plan ought to be about ball control to run the clock down and keep Bray on the bench with Da’Trick. Short quick passes with some screens mixed in will also keep the chains moving but keep the clock moving too. We should be able to run the ball with Crowell providing the stealth, Thomas the change up and Samuel bringing the wrecking ball. The key will be to use maximum time and score TD’s.

Blair Walsh has gone from being a strength to a liability. There are no guarantees with him anymore. He’s in a rut and it’s screwing up our world.

If our defense can cover with a little bit of a pass rush we can slow the Vols down and prevent any big plays. That leaves the offense to control the ball with the run game, score and keep Bray and Da’Trick on the bench.

Of course it would do my heart good to see Rambo knock Da’Trick out of his cleats one good time. You know…. for old time’s sake…. Don’t want Da’Trick to think we’ve forgot about his little indiscretion.

What worries me most? Alleged UGA fans who boo the coaches, get online and trash the team they allegedly cheer for, and online negativity b—words.

Realistically, we’ll have to cut down on the mistakes to win, and on balance, our improved defense should keep UT under 21 points, provided we don’t have too many special team letdowns.

We should be favored, based on whom we’ve played vs. UT’s schedule thusfar, but we are one point underdogs.

We will win or lose in the pits, and while UT’s DL and LBs will be a little stronger and better than our OL, our DL and LBs will be a LOT stronger than UT’s OL.

However, if Murray continues to throw into double coverage or miss on more than a couple of passes, we could lose the battle of turnovers, and the game.

UT is a good team, but we have a better team.

W, L or draw, I’ll be yelling for the DAWGS, and I won’t be whinning like a little girl or a drunk hillbilly on the internet.

UGA has a good chance of being 4-2 after this weekend, but again, who really cares. The best thing that can happen to this progam is to allow it to totally implode, then clean out the coaching staff.

The sad part about these blogs is these supports actually try to look for hope, but there is none. Just an above-average program in the weakest section of the SEC Divisions.

Definitely Aaron Murray and his turnover tendencies lately. He ran for his life last year too and was much better. The OL at UGA hasn’t been a strength for years. I wonder why Wisconsin’s is so dominant yet UGA’s is bigger.

Obviously bigger doesn’t mean better (take the BOise game for example), at least in this case it doesn’t!! :)

Respectful post and I can see your point. UT is weak this year, and UGA should come out 4-2 after this weekend, but Athens needs to aim higher and clean house in terms of Dooley, coaching and even the recently added AD.

Laughing at you people calling others “Energy Vampires” because they bring up the shortcomings of this staff/program. Obvioulsy, this was a creative PR move by CMR to call people names who didn’t support his lack of control and leadership of this program, or anyone who questioned what the heck is going on. I want to see a team go up there ready to play (which hasn’t happened up in Ob-Knoxville in the last two trips), and take care of business. I’m not sure that that can really happen personally. This is a turning point, either prove us wrong or right! Nothing would make me happier than UGA going in there and beating down those Vols. FINISH THE DRILL….. as you always like to hear them say!

Will Murray and Walsh continue to be generous givers?
Will the D look good because of weak throws?

The last one is related to the AJC article on the Dawgs are happy where they are. Huh? Happy at .500. Happy they are tied for first in the SEC East? Wrong, they lost the head-to-head with SC so they are not tied for first. Happy they gave away the SC game with 2 SC Returned for Touchdowns and a Fake Punt Touchdown. Happy with the offensive line who, according to SI, is the largest in the country and can’t block anyone. This attitude is not what Bama has, no LSU, nor UF, not Auburn, all recent Nat’l champs. Why does Boise State play the first game of their season like they were playing a BCS bowl game i.e., fired up, organized, working with precision, few penalties, efficient, effective, etc. And we come like out like the first fall scrimmage and we are “OK” with aiting till game 4 or 5 to start getting our stuff together. As in recent years, the Dawgs are just not prepared to play. Answer: coaching. I would trade the Boise State staff for ours in a heartbeat. Defense noticiably improved? And, it’s not like he has just stood pat over the last couple of years. He’s made changes to the coaching staff, as well as to discipline ot the players. Naturally, we all have ideas as to changes that we would make, especially with the luxury of hind sight.

“Actually, I think most of Murray’s problems, and perhaps even some of the second-half offensive slump, are a result of what worries me most about the Dawgs right now: the poor pass protection by a spotty offensive line that’s overworked because of a severe lack of depth.”

Unfortunately, the loudest UGA fans have the lowest football IQ. While Murray has made mistakes and needs to protect the ball better, the real problem is that our OTs are awful at pass protection.

They have horrible technique in pass blocking and allow the opposing DEs to routinely speed-rush around them. This was particularly true in the BSU game. To make matters worse, Aaron Murray has a horrible habit of trying to take a 3-5 step drop regardless of whether he is under center or in the shotgun. When he takes his three step drop in the shotgun, he is making it impossible to create a solid pocket and (even worse), he never steps into the pocket to allow the OTs to course-correct. They either need to train Murray or stop using the shotgun.

I’d say Aaron Murray. He’s winless against good teams (0-8 vs. winning teams) usually chokes under pressure. You wonder things like:
1- How many interceptions will he throw this time?
2- How many 3 and outs?
3- How many overthrows to wide open receivers?
4- How many fumbles?

Murray usually finds a way to lose games like this one.

Murray also has slow decision making, he’s taking a lot of sacks for a UGA QB, no one last 4 years has taken 1/2 as many in one year. Not the O-Line’s fault. Sacks take you out of field goal range, take yards off rushing totals, and kill drives.

Brantley was going back to pass a Bama player knocked the ball out of his hand the referee threw his marker noting the play was live at that point, no whistle was blown a Bama picked up the ball looked around a couple of team mates stared yelling to him to advance the ball which he then ran into the endzone, where it was ruled a touchdown….the next thing you know UF is lining up with the ball. The announcers are saying they are confused ,Saban is about to lose his mind on the sidelines…the ball is snapped Brantley goes back to pass and is injured…and as far as I can tell no one ever said Boo about what looked to be a Bama fumble recovery and TD….it was strange.

So the only two SEC teams we’ve beaten have not themselves beaten any other SEC. But now we’re getting all excited ’cause we’re tied for the top of the SEC East and think we’re special. Apparently we’ve forgotten that Miss and Miss St. used to be foregone conclusions for wins, instead of ‘must win’ games. We watch the Gators get man-handled by Bama after watching the Vols get beat by the Gators and somehow, we think the Dawgs have an easy road to the SEC championship now. HA.

If we sqeak by the Vols this week and find a way to outlast Vandy, the Gators may still hand us yet another beating, and then we shall know how lowly our coaching has made this team.

What worries me most about UGA v. Vols this weekend? Having to hear the two worst fight songs in the SEC. “Rocky Top” is barely tolerable as a 1960’s hillbilly novelty song by the Osborne Brothers; other than having the word “Tennessee” in it, though, it’s difficult to see why on earth anyone would want to sing/play it in jubilation at a Vols’ football game. I mean, other than the tradition, what is there to commend the song? As to UGA, again- other than tradition- what is there about “Battle Hymm of the Republic/ Glory, Glory to Ol’ Georgia” that would ever support its selection as a fight song? There are numerous schools, many of whom I root against, who have terrific fight songs-Bama, Auburn, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Michigan-even some of the Ivies. But the absolute worst song ever played at a football game has to be “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.” Seriously, where besides a Georgia game has that song been heard except at someone’s bar mitzvah while the grandparents dance? So, I’ll be watching the game with the volume turned all the way down. Should be an exciting match-up.

Really? Count how many seconds until the pocket collapses during the next sack. If you have less than 3.5 seconds to get the ball out of your hand, your O-line is failing. Most of the sacks aren’t coverage sacks, they are protection failures. Josh, you’re not much of an expert when it comes to QBs. If you became a coach, you might be the only coach in all of college to think that sack totals are an indication of QB play.

But to make the point, his interceptions, while not an optimal amount right now (of course it wouldn’t be whenever you have 3 in a game) aren’t out of line with the upper tier QBs in the game right now. Landry Jones and Barrett Trotter both have 5 and Denard Robinson has 6. In other words, you are really stretching to make something out of the stats and haven’t made a valid point yet.

If Sanders Cummings and Barcarri Rambo will cover the receivers like a blanket, Tyler Bray will have to eat the ball. They’re not very equipped to run the ball. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!

What's difference between 101,000 and 93,000

October 4th, 2011

Tired of hearing UGA players, fans, alumni, etc. talking about Neyland’s 101,000. Heck, UGA holds 93,000. It doesn’t make a darn difference. Watch the game Hoosiers. The rim is still 10 feet high in Hickory’s Gym as it was at KU Fieldhouse.

Play the game hard. Play with passion. Play for your teammates. Play it like Herschel. All the rest will take care of it self.

No disrespect to my UT brothers. Love Knoxville and Neyland. Just pointing out the “worries” about 8,000 extra fans.

What’s worse? 102,000 screaming hillbillies or 92,000 drunk rednecks? I don’t really see much difference. Both places are loud no matter where these teams play. I will give UT the edge on this one. They will come to play and get after Murray. Ga has to stop their run game or it will be a longggggg night.

If Crowell is running well, leave him in the game and give him the ball. What’s more important, winning the game of sticking to a predetermined rotation that is not working? I’ve lost track of how many Georgia-UT games I’ve seen in Knoxville, but I do know I’ve seen more wins than losses – oh yeah, and one tie in ‘68 – including the one that Bill Bates would like to forget and the one that Bill Battle would also. It’s time to let the ‘big dog eat’, again, in Knoxville.

Oh yeah, since Day-Rick’s still playing there and his ‘adopted’ brother Nash Nance is nowhere on the depth chart, does that mean that Daddy Nance has decided that his ‘first son’ just might not be such a hot commodity and should have gone to Vandy all along – then again, I’m not sure Day-Rick could have made Georgia’s WR top six anyway.

What worries me most?

1) Richt’s propensity, even in good years, to fail to prepare his team to show up at all, at least one game a year. And 4 times in his tenure it has been against Tennessee (’04, ‘06, ‘07, ‘09), including the last 2 in Knoxville.

2) That a win might be a milestone on the way to an 8-5 or 9-4 season, that proves to be just good enough for Richt to keep his job. I want Richt to be really successful, but if he’s not going to take us back to where we were ‘01 – ‘05, I want the road to failure to be decisive so that we can bring in new leadership.

I could care less what the problem is with the vols that since 1991 they are # 21 in wins and since 2005 are # 48; but I can assure you that they are not getting better with this year’s team. We have enough of our own issues, as I have detailed for us all.

03 we beat no team finishing Top 10, lost 3 games
04 we beat no team finishing Top 10, did beat 4-loss Florida in Greene’s final season, lost to bad vols team
05 we beat # 6 LSU for SEC CG win but ended up # 3 of SEC teams in polls with 3 losses

I agree it got worse after 2005, for 2006-today # 27 in won/lost record, but what did we do again 2001-2005 ? Won SEC 2002 when SEC was WAY down, Ended up # 3 final polls of just SEC teams 2005.

Insider, what exactly is it that Richt is stubbornly refusing to “fix” about the special teams issues this year? The only real trouble that can be addressed has been some (and a couple were just freaks) trouble defending the punt returns, and they completely changed that up Last week. What “fixes” are you suggesting at this point, from all your years. A dedicated special teams coach isn’t going to eliminate one of the best PK in the nation from ever having a slump in his career. And who has a dedicated ST coach anyway?

Its evident that both teams arent the same. I think crowd noise can be a factor if they let it but if Georgia can get quick scores then it’ll quieten the crowd and make it a non issue. Gotta set up the running game 1st. but i noticed that Crowell hasnt been doing as many cut back runs like he did before.
Just like any SEC Game, records dont matter and what does is momentum the Dawgs have got to find their way.
If Georgia can beat Tennessee and then Vanderbilt these next 2 weeks i think you’;ll see them on top of the SEC while Florida and South Carolina has 2 big games coming up.
Remember Georgia……tying South Carolina wont help us.

OL has been opening huge holes for all the Running Backs. So, I would not say they cannot block, just because the QB is sacked the most of any in the nation since he got here, which was by the way, December 2008 for the bowl practices that year – injured but here. He holds on to the football too long, and throws behind receivers and overthrows the receivers because he is small and cannot see the field.

The second half offensive problems are because all the other coaches in America (and Georgia) make adjustments at half time. We never do; we just continue to run the same game plan and the same plays in the same situations as if changing them would be illegal. We have far more talent than UT, but the dawg which will be struttin’ at the end will be that mongrel, blue tick, flea bag Heinz 57 of Tennessee, all because of coaching (or lack thereof)…

Flo-Ri-Duh

October 5th, 2011

That is exactly the problem with the offense. Lack of depth on the o-line. The Vols and Auburn have poached our top OL talent for so long. Richt has been a great recruiter of skill players over the years but has missed out when it comes to the OL and to some extent the DL. The best OL and DL recruits in the 2011 are once again headed out of state. Most of the big name OL Richt has signed never play for UGA. An injured 4 star OL pads the recruiting class rating but a better choice would be a 3 star that can actually stay on the team and contribute.

The very very painful truth of the matter

October 5th, 2011
10:10 am

It’s kind of sad to see all the Dawg fans getting so excited this year (just like the year before, the year before that, etc.). How long is it going to take for UGA fans to realize that UGA is simply no longer relevant in the SEC? In the national picture, UGA isn’t even a blip on the radar, and hasn’t been since the preseason #1 ranking three years ago.

Sit back and be grateful for the six or seven wins you’ll get every year. Coaching genius Mark Richt may take you to 8-4 or even 9-3 occasionally, but Other schools will still win the SEC, meaning no BCS bowls and no top 10 final ranking. Most years, UGA will be very lucky to finish in the top 50, and only after a big bowl win over a nobody opponent.

It’s a different world now, and Dawg fans need to adjust their expectations downward to reflect reality.

Unfortunately nothing is going to change until UGA changes its mediocre coaching. That’s where the difference is, and that’s why everyone outside Dawgtard Nation just laughs at Dawg fans getting so excited year after year about what a great recruiting class UGA gets. It doesn’t matter how many blue chip high school players go to UGA, they simply don’t get the coaching they would get at Florida or Alabama, to name two schools whose programs are far ahead of UGA. And that’s not going to change as long as Mark Richt is in Athens.

Get your heads out of the sand and face reality. And mediocrity and irrelevance.

Geeze….You guys have had some of the best field goal kickers in the SEC, or anywhere in the past #of years and now you are down on B.Walsh because he misses a few 45 yd. “chip shots”? Richt should be trying to get “Crowww-Welllllll” to run for some first downs instead of trying all the field goals anyhow. I can remember one time when someone asked Bear Bryant why he went for the first down instead of the sure field goal and he said ” I figured there would be a time when we would have to make the first down so we needed to know we could”. Look at how many times in the past UGA needed the first down and went for the field goal instead and you will see where some of your losses came from.

What worries me most is that the O-line is not blowing anybody of significance off the ball and creating any lanes for Samuel to run or Murray to throw. Crowell seems to just need a crease and he is to the house sort of like how Moreno was just making something out of nothing. But that protection scheme we run is out of date for the SEC. It’s not even there versus lesser opponents so that’s what im concerned about and also if we cannot generate any pressure on their qb with our d-line vs that mammoth of a line that the Vols trot out there year in and year out we in for a long day. 5)Derek Dooley hasn’t established himself as a winner on any level in this league. CMR has.
Prediction: Low-scoring, close first-half…Georgia puts this away in the closing minutes of the third qtr, pulling ahead by just over 2 TDs and Tenn never recovers, getting a last second TD to keep the score respectable. Final-UGA 31 Tennessee 20

In stark contrast to the Kool-aid drinkers on here, you have chosen to SMOKE the Kool-aid. IC is the #4 Freshman running back in the nation and the #4 overall back in the SEC. This is anything but avg. Especially considering that his year to date total rushing is greater than the combined totals for the entire tennessee backfield, and he avgs 7 yds less per game than their whole team. Your arguments are as hollow as your head, boy.

As I watched the FL/ ‘Bama game last Sat. night, I was struck by the thought and question if we’d EVER see a team as disciplined and hard-nosed as ‘Bama in Athens? The question takes on a dynamic twist when one considers that UGA has the abiltiy to recruit in what many feel is one of the four best recruiting states. The other three being Florida, Texas, and California. For the life of me I cannot understand why UGA isn’t a top 10 team every year with such a recruiting edge.

As for the game in Ktown, I picked UGA to finish the season 7-5, with one of the 5 losses to the Vols. I’ve seen nothing to change my mind. Do think it might be a bit of a better game than the past two trips to Ktown. Clearly, in ‘07 and ‘09 UGA just didn’t show up for work. As for worries, way too many to go into here. First things first. Get proper motivation. Don’t let there be another ‘07 or ‘09. A UGA win could be a nice springboard to the remainder of the season. Suppose we’ll know about midnight Sat.

Yeah NiquePhotog, that must be a really scientific poll. Speaking of no one caring about football, what is the minimum donation that one could have made this year to purchase season tickets for the first time at Tech? $0. Minimum donation in Athens? Over $2K. And how many fewer seats does the Joke by Coke have? 38K. Hmmmm. Let’s see, higher supply, much higher price…Oh, economics! That must mean that demand is higher in Athens by a tremendous amount. I’d say that’s a pretty good measure of caring about football. Want further proof? Georgia is 2nd in total football revenue (only behind Texas), with almost 3 times as much as Georgia Tech ($70.8M to $24.2M).

DawginTX,

Did I say it was scientific? No. It obviously displays somewhat how much dedication there is to a team and their mascot. And UGA is lacking.

Sorry, but you are misinformed and must have gotten the donation info from someone on this blog. There is a minimum donation.

Do 90,000 seats matter if it’s not an intimidating environment? I don’t see other teams EVER talking about Sanford Stadium how fans are talking about Neyland stadium right now.

I guess it helps that more than half the non-students in the stadium are bandwagoning wannabe dawg fans. Personally, I’m glad we don’t have to deal with them.

GT has a better ratio of seats per student (55,000 to 13,000 vs 92,000 to 26,000). And I guess it doesn’t help that GT grads actually have the capacity to get jobs out-of-state/country. Sure, there are some exceptions from UGA, possibly like yourself, but I can guarantee the 70-80% at UGA that are from GA, stay in GA after graduating. I know two guys, one working in Taiwan and one in Anchorage. Each comes back to GT for one game a season. I think that’s caring.

On a further note, Georgia Tech is #1 in % of alumni giving. Most of our money goes to academics, how it should be.

Nice blog … Murray is a nice QB but it would not hurt for him to feel some heat and lose snaps when he makes big mistakes.
A running back that can’t hold on to the ball sits the bench. A QB that throws a pick 6 has to sit.
As far as height… do like boise st. Moore is only 6ft tall. They throw short quick passes. Most are under 5 yards. Chop block … that keeps the D linemen’s hands down.
But of couse if a guy typing into a newspaper blog knows more about the QB and how to use him than the QB coach and offensive coordinator. Well sir that is the real problem, Not how tall Murray is.

Has UGA QB Aaron Murray ever defeated any top notch team in the SEC or from elsewhere ? Answer is NO.

Did he not choke vs Florida in 2010 with fumbles and the OT pic? Answer? Yes.

Murray must this year prove that he can win vs the Big Boys left, or UGA is AGAIN bottom rung team. CMR’s future is in his hands and in the O line’s.

Folks ………….. the guy has been in ths so called system for 2.3 years and it looks like his is a true frosh. He is trying so hard to make Orson Charles’ resume much beefier and as a result, it is hurting UGA come game day. THIS IS WHY he takes so long to release the ball.

To DAWGtired – Your comment about UT “and undisciplined squads in FBS football.” Sorry to say – but that title would go to UGA.
