What worries you most as the Dogs head to Knoxville?

The poor play of Georgia's offensive line in pass protection is affecting Aaron Murray (Associated Press)

As the Bulldogs prepare to journey up to Rocky Top, what worries you most as a Georgia fan?

Is it the loss of ace pass rusher Cornelius Washington, who might have been expected to apply considerable pressure on Volunteer QB Tyler Bray? Are you remembering how Kellen Moore picked apart the Georgia defense when he wasn’t under any pressure?

Are you fretting about the continuing special teams problems and wondering just what Mark Richt’s going to do if a game comes down to the choice between going for it on fourth down or calling in Blair Walsh and the field goal unit?

Does the fall-off in offensive production in the second half over the past couple of games worry you the most?

Or is it the shaky play of sophomore quarterback Aaron Murray, who threw three more picks Saturday?

Actually, I think most of Murray’s problems, and perhaps even some of the second-half offensive slump, are a result of what worries me most about the Dawgs right now: the poor pass protection by a spotty offensive line that’s overworked because of a severe lack of depth.

It looked to me Saturday like maybe one of the reasons Mike Bobo got conservative in the second half and didn’t make as much use of the spread (where Isaiah Crowell appears to be more effective since he thrives on space) was because he was trying to protect his quarterback with more blockers in the backfield.

In addition to getting sacked a couple of times by the Maroon Bulldogs, Murray was hit hard several times in the first half and he never seemed comfortable in the pocket after that. In fact, a couple of times he seemed so uncomfortable that he hurried passes when he didn’t even have to. Bobo also had Murray rolling out more, which doesn’t appear to help the young quarterback’s accuracy.

And remember the last time this OL played before a really noisy crowd, in the Georgia Dome, and all those false starts? Neyland Stadium will definitely be just as loud, if not more so.

So that’s what concerns me the most as the Dogs head to Knoxville: the deficient OL and the effect it’s having on our quarterback and playcalling.

How about you?

A Murray usually plays his worst against good teams, and best against bad teams. Look for another flat game from Murray.

We’ve seen it 8 for 8 times when he’s faced a winning team. 0-8.

So the only two SEC teams we’ve beaten have not themselves beaten any other SEC. But now we’re getting all excited ’cause we’re tied for the top of the SEC East and think we’re special. Apparently we’ve forgotten that Miss and Miss St. used to be foregone conclusions for wins, instead of ‘must win’ games. We watch the Gators get man-handled by Bama after watching the Vols get beat by the Gators and somehow, we think the Dawgs have an easy road to the SEC championship now. HA.

If we sqeak by the Vols this week and find a way to outlast Vandy, the Gators may still hand us yet another beating, and then we shall know how lowly our coaching has made this team.

That’s what I worry about.

You guys realize, after 5 games, Murray’s on track for 30 sacks and 14 interceptions? WOW, the guy just doesn’t get it.

One of the worst QB’s in the nation in both areas.

What worries me most about UGA v. Vols this weekend? Having to hear the two worst fight songs in the SEC. “Rocky Top” is barely tolerable as a 1960’s hillbilly novelty song by the Osborne Brothers; other than having the word “Tennessee” in it, though, it’s difficult to see why on earth anyone would want to sing/play it in jubilation at a Vols’ football game. I mean, other than the tradition, what is there to commend the song? As to UGA, again- other than tradition- what is there about “Battle Hymm of the Republic/ Glory, Glory to Ol’ Georgia” that would ever support its selection as a fight song? There are numerous schools, many of whom I root against, who have terrific fight songs-Bama, Auburn, Notre Dame, Wisconsin, Michigan-even some of the Ivies. But the absolute worst song ever played at a football game has to be “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.” Seriously, where besides a Georgia game has that song been heard except at someone’s bar mitzvah while the grandparents dance? So, I’ll be watching the game with the volume turned all the way down. Should be an exciting match-up.

WDE,

about the fumble recovery by BAMA, I am confused too, have been wondering about it as well. That’s just weird.

To me, it’s the referees not doing their job. I am not sure how the score keeper and referees work between them. I guess it’s because the referees never raised their hands to signal a touchdown.

Especially with the ref standing 3 feet away and throws the beanbag to signal fumble and its still not ruled a fumble!! Just cant understand these officials sometimes!!!

But either way, the bashers are reaching for material.

In fact, one of the most profitable deptartments in the nation, if not #1. Or do you still have some delirious tax payer argument, that made no sense, to somehow make it your excuse to denigrate GA?

The QB recovered the fumble and downed it. That’s what happened. It’s not that complicated and the coaches were not that concerned.

Murray also has slow decision making, he’s taking a lot of sacks for a UGA QB, no one last 4 years has taken 1/2 as many in one year. Not the O-Line’s fault.
———————————
Really? Count how many seconds until the pocket collapses during the next sack. If you have less than 3.5 seconds to get the ball out of your hand, your O-line is failing. Most of the sacks aren’t coverage sacks, they are protection failures. And pointing out sacks from years past is like me comparing the running game now to the running game 2 years ago with Ealey and King. Different players.

And you can tell Boykin is doing his best to bust one. At some point we will have to go for on 4th and short and go for 7 points. Coach wants to put teams away, but last week when he didn’t go for it on 4th at the 5 (to put game away in my opinion), that didn’t help his cause.
And I believe it was trying to give Blair another chance to snap out of it. Too many chances to snap out of it unfortunately. I understand you’ve got to get his confidence back, but…..

Josh, you’re not much of an expert when it comes to QBs. If you became a coach, you might be the only coach in all of college to think that sack totals are an indication of QB play.

But to make the point, his interceptions, while not an optimal amount right now (of course it wouldn’t be whenever you have 3 in a game) aren’t out of line with the upper tier QBs in the game right now. Landry Jones and Barrett Trotter both have 5 and Denard Robinson has 6. In other words, you are really stretching to make something out of the stats and haven’t made a valid point yet.

What worries me is that we won’t come ready to play. There’s always at least one game every season that Mark Richt doesn’t have the team ready to play for. This is a statement game for both teams. For us(georgia) it’s a game we need to come out and play fast and when the opportunity arises finish the vols off, show everyone that this program is taking a big step forward, out of mediocrity. For the vols it’s a game they need to win to rally around as a program. Our boys have to come out and be ready to go from the first whistle.

TampaDawg, I like the kid but until he gets the “no wins against winning teams” off his back these people won’t shut up. I think he might press harder than he should against better foes. His turnovers against SC and against us last year in Jax did cost UGA the game and both cases he was trying too hard to make a play. He is not good enough YET to carry the team.

ga gator, he did kill us in the SC game but there was a lot more than just his play to point to as to why UGA didn’t get that win. I’ll say it again, without Murray, there may not have even been an overtime to begin with. The D was a mess early in the game too.

Problem is, too many fans aren’t sharp enough to remember anybody else’s name on the team so they go with the guy taking the snaps. It’s common but it’s ignorant.

Vinny, they will be ready to play this week especially since the door has been opened for UGA. I still cannot believe that Mullin was stupid enough to allow his team to pull the shenanigans right before kickoff. It was a coaches dream to have another team give you a perfect topic for pregame motivation. That was the best first 5 minutes UGA has played this year.
