A few reasons Georgia Bulldogs fans should feel great (or not)

Isaiah Crowell showed some nifty moves again Saturday. (Brant Sanderlin / AJC)

A few more reflections on why a Georgia Bulldogs fan should feel great after the win over Mississippi State …

Isaiah Crowell might have a long way to go in terms of SEC caliber stamina, and he’s also still looking for his first long touchdown run after Saturday’s apparent 49-yard scamper was ruled out of bounds. But he’s already shown he has the moves to be a big-time running back. His elusiveness on that erstwhile scoring run brought quite a few wows from the crowd. …

The defense continues to impress and improve, breaking up more passes in the past couple of weeks than a Bulldog fan can remember seeing in a long time. …

Brandon Boykin returning punts as well as kickoffs is a smart move on the part of the Georgia coaching staff. He had two nice returns Saturday and it’s a pretty safe bet he’s going to break another long one all the way sometime soon. …

One of the big reasons the D is looking so good lately is Sanders Commings, who against MSU had three tackles, returned a fumble, snagged an interception and broke up two other passes that he almost (and perhaps should have) intercepted, one of which he easily could have scored on. …

It was great seeing Christian Robinson back on the field calling the defensive signals in the two-minute defense and on third downs. …

And thanks to the losses Saturday by South Carolina and Florida, the Dawgs still have more to play for than just pride.

Too bad Cornelius Washington didn't confine his celebrating to the field Saturday. (Brant Sanderlin /AJC)

Too bad Cornelius Washington didn't confine his celebrating to the field Saturday. (Brant Sanderlin /AJC)

Of course, there are also a few reasons for Dogs fans still to feel a bit uneasy …

The continuing struggles of the field goal unit and the second-half disappearing act of the offense for the second straight week. …

The sneaking suspicion that Mark Richt continuing to show a lack of faith in his offense in short-yardage situations might be turning into a self-fulfilling prophecy. At least Richt understood the boos after he opted to go for a field goal on fourth-and-short only to see the kick muffed. “If I was up in the stands, I wouldn’t have too thrilled about those couple of plays either,” he said.

Cornelius Washington’s celebrating of his best game as a Dog lasting a bit too long, resulting in him being suspended for the next two games just as he was really starting to click as a pass-rusher. …

CBS’ Gary Danielson saying that Saturday’s results leave Georgia “in the driver’s seat” in the SEC East. True or not, I’d much rather the Dogs continue operating under the radar of the national sports media for now. …

And after a glorious fall day in Athens, I wasn’t the only fan lamenting that the schedule will keep the Dogs away from Sanford Stadium for the next five weeks, meaning no more home games during the absolutely best month of football weather.

What has you feeling good or not so good about the Dawgs at this point in the season?

If the penalty for knowing nothing about football is death, then I shudder to think what the punishment might be for exceedingly poor grammar.

pigiron,
i hear ya, but what is the root cause? why don’t they have a short yardage game? let’s get at the root of the problem and fix it.
character assassination doesn’t fix anything. why don’t/can’t they fix it?

Unbelievable – Dawg fans never make sense – You beat 3 pathetic teams (Coastal Carolina, Ole Missy – which was beat by VANDY 30-7, and Missy State – who was nearly beat by Lossey State) and you THNIK you think you belong on top again. WHAT HAS UGA PROVED IN THE LAST 3 GAMES??? NOTHING! With your pathetic remaining schedule – you SHOULD be able to run the table – with a bad TN team, a beat-up FL team, and an Auburn team who got beat by Clemson. But when it comes to REAL teams – you guys lose.

Let’s see… You’re rushing a true Freshman and a converted Linebacker, aren’t you? Does your O-line know how to run block? Are your Tight Ends and Backs contributing to the blocking scheme? Is your team in good physical condition? Are you calling the correct plays for the defense that you are facing on a given play?

“why don’t/can’t they fix it?”
I dunno. That’s above my pay grade. Men are being paid millions of dollars to fix it as we speak.

Folks , don’t get too excited. We’re “tied for first” with Florida(who has beat us 18 out of the past 21 times) and South Carolina (who beat us head to head because of our incompetent coaching).

When’s the last time UGA beat Tennessee in Knoxville? I believe that was when Verron Hayes did the Hobnail Boot Houdini trick at the last minute.

We will get routed by both. Not because of our exceptionally talented players, but because of coaches, their game plan and play calling, and their choices of who they play versus who they bench.

Don’t get your hopes up, or you’ll just get your heart rippied out like you do every year…

@Snoop

You can’t afford to fire him. He still has two years left on his contract. On the other hand, you have to give him a contract extension, or he can’t recruit the Dream Team©.

Looks like you’re just stuck with him. But Hey… He’s a really nice guy!

Umm, didn’t Florida lose by 4 TD’s to Bama? That’s some defense they got eh? Idiot…

Hope everyone doesn’t start getting ahead of themselves. At this point in the season, there is no way that we could play with Bama or LSU. Look what happened to the Gators. They were overrated and got exposed in the worst possible way. Bama was their only true competition thus far and told them Sat. what kind of team that they have. They got humiliated and absolutely drubbed. If the Dawgs can play competitively for all 4 quarters then we have the talent to be a fierce competitor to all that we face and stay on the field with them. The D looks sharp and I am confident in their ability to shut down most offenses. The O is another story. The Dawgs are not able to pull away from the competition in the 2nd half and that’s worrisome. Murray has got to be more accurate and Walsh has to work out his issues for us to even consider winning the rest of the games on the sked. One game at a time guys. GO DAWGS!

Lots of Kool-Aid being quoffed this week. Offensive play calling is as stiff as a grade school playbook. The D is playing better but this is between the fifth and sixth game. The only decent teams Georgia has played have defeated the Bulldogs. If Georgia, and they will, plays any other decent teams, those decent teams will beat the Bulldogs. Georgia Football has devolved into a charity program for half hearted athletes ‘led’ by men of no vision. No wonder the coach is known as a ‘player’s coach’.
Coach has low expectations. Coach has no fire. Coach already working up the 2011 edition of the wait until next year pep talk. Be a shame to turn over the Dream Team to some outside agitators.
Muschamp is licking his lips. The Georgia game is an expected win for the Gators this year.It is not for the Bulldogs.
And the cheerleaders cooed, “Midi”, and the zombies in the stands yelled, “Ocrity” Not too loud mind you, not too loud. The AD and the Prez wooing Mizzou under the stands. The coach? He’s not fussing at anyone. He is serene. All staff and team deficiencies are understood, and forgiven.
More Kool-Aid?

Mark this down—florida’s defense got rolled by Alabam’s run game and they have a freshman QB who is not that good. Georgia can finally beat them easily in Jacksonville!! The Dawgs beat Tennessee and will own the SEC east!!!! UGA v. Alabama for the SEC title!!!

ugly.

UGA vs Alabama for the SEC title ?

ugly.

I shudder to even think about it.

How many years have we had the better-talented team than Florida and LOST down there in Florida ?

We have averaged the # 7 recruiting class all 11 years of Mark Richt, averaging both Rivals and Scout rankings.

And, excuse me – while I am at correcting your DISNEYdawgs.com post dawg1, sixteen (16) times Mark Richt has had the vastly superior talent in his 11 years and LOST and 10 of those 16, even with their win over Mak Richt and his “coaching staff,” the sorry opponent who beat us, was still not even ranked in the Top 25 for that season.

ugly.

ugly to even contemplate.

Bottom line is Georgia’s record proves that they beat average and lesser teams. When uga playes ranked teams they lose. What is NOT true about that statement. You’re still bragging?

Works great — between the 30 yard lines. Not so well in the defensive sardine tin that is the red zone.

Reasons for feeling good? Well, let’s see…

1. Four different SEC teams have won the last five BCS championships.

2. UGA was not one of those teams.

3. During that period, UGA did not win the SEC championship.

4. During that period, UGA did not even win its SEC division.

5. Red panties.

In other words, UGA has sunk into total irrelevancy both regionally and nationally.

So why is UGA paying Mark Richt millions of dollars a year?

I see evidence that we are CLOSE to being really good. Both the D and O units have played very well for long stretches of games. If we can just play with enough consistency to put together complete games, we could be very good. Yes, I realize that many teams could say that, but I’ve seen Georgia teams that just don’t have the pieces. This team does. I would love to see them put it together. I’m not saying we could compete well with Bama or LSU, but we could establish ourselves as the 3rd best in the conference and a top 15 or so team.
